World AIDS Day Ribbon Assembly Mudd Field, 1:10 p.m. Students will assemble to raise awareness about AIDS. There will be a brief address and free hot cocoa. At the end of the assembly, an aerial photo will be taken of the students holding red balloons in the shape of the memorial ribbon as a symbol of remembrance and support.
Iran’s Nuclear Technology: A Right or Reward? DUC 276, 5-6 p.m. Fatemeh Keshavarz, a professor of Persian language and literature; Dean Ewan Harrison, a lecturer in the political science department; and Robert Canfield, an anthropology professor will discuss Iran’s right to nuclear technology as well as the role of the international community in monitoring and sustaining Iran’s nuclear program. The event is sponsored by Global Zero and Controversy N’ Coffee. Global Zero is an international organization aimed at eliminating nuclear weapon stockpiles around the world and raising awareness of the effects of and issues related to nuclear weapons.
Hikaru Nakamura and Ben Finegold Chess Event College Hall, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Two of America’s most talented and well-respected chess players will visit the University. Hikaru Nakamura will play multiple people at the same time while blindfolded, and Ben Finegold will play with students one-on-one. Refreshments will be provided. Sponsored by the Chess Club. St. Louis Schools Discussion Panel DUC 276, 7:30-8:30 p.m. A discussion panel sponsored by the Washington University Political Review will feature Robbyn Wahby, Mayor Slay’s education adviser; Terry Harris, the director of equity and diversity for the Rockwood School District; John Payne, a research assistant at the Show-Me Institute; and Dr. Janet Duckham, an English teacher at Ladue High School. We will be discussing issues such as charter schools, integration in the city and merit pay for teachers in the St. Louis area. Free pizza will be provided.

Burglary — 2:50 p.m. A complainant reported the theft of a laptop computer, valued at $550, from a lab in McDonnell. The time of the crime was between 1 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 9 a.m. on Nov. 22. Disposition: pending. Informational—4:23 p.m. A complainant reported an unattended item found sitting in a hallway in the
Plant Growth Facility. The shipment was possibly intended for a professor by the same name at the University of Alabama. Disposition: pending. Tuesday, Nov. 23 Larceny—1:29 p.m. A complainant reported the theft of a game, valued at $60, from a dorm room. He reported that numerous people were playing the game during the night, and in the morning the game was missing. Disposition: pending.
A University employee reported a hole cut in the gas tank of a University-owned golf cart at Monsanto Hall. The time of the crime was between 3 p.m. on Nov. 20 and 12:45 p.m. on Nov. 23. The value of the damage was $200. Disposition: pending. Thursday, Nov. 25 Property damage—9:06 p.m.

While the online portfolio will begin as a
personal reference tool, it may eventually have further applications, perhaps for students seeking on-campus leadership positions, as part of a common system. Such details, however, have not yet been discussed at length. Several other college campuses across the country have already developed similar programs, such as the “e-portfolio” at Washington State University, which includes materials

ranging from writing samples and photos to research projects. Programs like this one have been successful at other institutions and now serve as valuable precedent in the discussion about what a cocurricular portfolio at Washington University should look like.
