Electronic File Submission FORMATS, GUIDELINES & SUGGESTIONS The following is a list of guidelines that will help to ensure proper output of your electronically submitted advertisements in the IDS. These suggestions, guidelines and formats will help us to make your ad reproduce at the highest and sharpest quality to maximize the visual and informative impact to our readers. PROOFREADING Carefully proofread and spellcheck everything that you submit to the IDS. We continually receive ads with spelling, grammar and punctuation errors. We will do our best to fix these errors, but occasionally we cannot fix the problem due to format limitations. FILE INFORMATION For accurate production of your ad, include the file name, location (disc, e-mail, ftp server) and the software used to create the ad that is being submitted. ATTACH PRINTOUTS Always send a hard copy printout of your ad for proofing purposes. This will allow us to ensure accurate fonts, images and graphics are being used in your ad. If you have a color advertisement, please submit a color printout. This helps to ensure proper placement of color. PAGE SIZE Always create ads at 100% of the intended size at which it will be printed. If we receive an ad that is smaller than actual final output size, this can lead to pixelation, loss of image quality and legibility. In some instances, it may be necessary to float your ad in the paid space to prevent poor printing of the advertisement, instead of resizing it.
SOFTWARE Optimal output for printing results from Adobe products. Ads created in Microsoft programs may need to be recreated.
SPOT COLOR CONVERSION 0 = 0% 1 = 10% 2 = 20% 3 = 30%
ARTWORK INFORMATION All artwork, graphics and logos submitted to the IDS should be at least as large as you intend to see them in the paper and ideally at 300 dpi or higher. Ads that are small or pulled off the Internet may cause pixelation and loss of quality. FILE FORMATS All files should be sent to the IDS as .pdf, .eps, .ai, .tiff, .indd, or .jpg. When submitting most files it is recommended to outline all fonts prior to submission. This will ensure proper output of your selected font choices. You may also submit Mac version fonts. If fonts are submitted, it is necessary to send the entire font family. COLOR For full color advertisements, submit CMYK color, not RGB. If you have a spot color, consult the table on the proper percentages for CMYK plates. All black and white ads and artwork should be saved as grayscale.
4 = 40% 5 = 50% 6 = 60% 7 = 70% 8 = 80% 9 = 100% Example: blue 910 = 100% Cyan, 10% Magenta, 0% Yellow.
ONLINE FORMATTING All files should be sent to the IDS in .gif, .jpg or flash file formats. When using an animated .swf file, we will need the original .fla file. We will add code to the file that will be used for linking and tracking your ad. When using ActionScript, please use version 2.0. Contact your account executive or e-mail ads@idnews.com for more details. Files should be no larger than 100 K.

While Ames has a mere population of 50,000, more than half of which are students, the variety of culture to experience is everything but lacking. Staying Slim in the Cold: College Style By Kate Adams AmesEats Flavors Writer There are many worries when coming to college, making friends, finding your classes, getting good grades. A not so common worry: the freshman fifteen. The allyou-can-eat dining centers combined with sleepless nights and stressful days can pack on the pounds for a college freshman. Well we are here to help! Dailyburn.com is a free fitness Website that focuses on social networking and community interaction. Kate Brown, certified fitness trainer and head trainer for Dailyburn.com shared some
foods to avoid in the dining halls, energizing study snacks and the perfect study break workout. There are so many food temptations in the dining halls, around campus and off campus that are often hard to resist. When mom and dad are no longer cooking for you or watching over what you eat, it’s easy to gain weight. A few foods students should consider staying away from to avoid weight gain are:
Bottled Coffee Drinks:

Iowa State Daily October, 27, 2010 way to class, but these drinks come with a hefty health cost. At an average of 32 grams of sugar per bottle, these drinks are closer to soda than real coffee! Try an iced coffee with skim milk instead.
SALAD DRESSINGS
You may think that you are doing yourself a favor by loading up at the salad bar. But, if you slather your veggies in salad dressing, you could be adding an extra 200 – 300 calories to your meal. Instead, use a lite dressing or balsamic vinegar, which will add flavor without adding too many calories.
Energy Bars:
On occasion, prepackaged energy bars can make a suitable breakfast if you are in a pinch and you are literally running on empty, but these bars are high in sugar. Even bars that contain added protein and fiber are little more than candy bars mixed with whey protein. Instead, keep a small bag of almonds and raisins in your bag for emergency noshing.

“Homestyle” Meals:
Just because your Mom made the best mashed potatoes in the world doesn’t mean that campus food services does. Many schools contract out their dining services to huge companies. These companies know how to be as efficient as possible which means that the mashed potatoes are more likely to be heavily processed and not the creamy, fresh mashed potatoes with real butter that you find yourself longing for after an especially hard mid-term exam. For a healthier alternative, grab a baked potato, mash up the inside, and add a little butter or a dollop of sour cream. In addition to eating right, students should make a conscious effort to do some kind of physical activity. It doesn’t always have to mean heading to the gym, sometimes simple exercise in the comfort of your own room can do the trick. Following are exercises students can do during a 15-minute study break:

Bench Dips:
Face away from your desk chair, and use your hands to support your weight behind you as you stretch your legs out in front of you. Cross one foot over the other. Slowly lower your body toward the floor by bending your elbows until your upper arms and forearms form a right angle. Do not go below a 90-degree angle, as this can stress your shoulders. Slowly rise back up to the start position by straightening your arms.
Toe Touches:
Lie with your back on the floor and elevate your legs up into the air. Make sure you keep your lower back pressed flat into the ground. Exhale and crunch forward to touch your toes (touching any part of your foot will work!) Remember, don’t pull your chin down toward your chest.
Pushups:
Position yourself so that your hands are directly below your shoulders and toes are on the ground. Hold your body up with a
Iowa State Daily October, 27, 2010 straight back. Keep your head back and lower your chest down toward the ground. When you feel a good stretch in your chest and shoulders hold for 1 second and press up back to the starting position.
Bird Dogs:
Start on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Brace your abdominals and extend one leg straight back and the opposite arm straight out. Hold this position for 2 seconds and lower back down to the floor.
Wall Sits:
Lean with your back flat against a wall with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle. Hold this position as long as you can. Although this exercise looks easy, this killer isometric exercise will strengthen your quads and glutes. Do all exercises in three sets as a circuit, and you’ll surely feel the burn within 15 minutes!

Sales Promotion Materials As we have dealt with the economic recession, and now $64 million in university y budget g cuts this yyear,, things g in the sales department p are anything but easy. For reasons beyond our control, over 60% of our advertisers quit advertising. Not just with our paper, but with anyone in the market. Parts of this city are so dependent on the university community to push dollars into the market, that when the university is hurting, so is the local economy economy. We needed to find a way to really connect with new clients and old, in a way that wouldn’t mean our papers get pushed to the side on a desk. We needed to get their attention, and to pay attention to the dollars that student spending controls. We borrowed W b d an id idea ffrom All Alloy M Media di tto create t our very own promotional ti l materials that would not get lost on a desk. We put together a purple 6pack cooler with “Welcome BACK to college life” on the outside. On the inside, we wanted to recreate nostalgic and classic college moments and experiences p – there was a p pack of ramen noodles, a p pack of microwave popcorn, and a bottle of energy drink or vitamin water. Then there was the fold-out football schedule, along with attention-grabbing statements regarding LSU student spending, and an overall look at where the dollars will go. On the Ramen noodles there was a label demonstrating that LSU students will spend $38 million this year on FOOD (on top of a meal plan) plan). On the popcorn, there was a label showing that LSU students will spend $10 million on entertainment apart from nightlife.

Sales Promotion Materials – Explanation Cont. We have taken a major initiative to break out from the competition and make things easy for our clients clients. In the past past, while our flyers flyers, post cards and mailers have been innovative, they haven’t always stood out as “LSU Student Media”. This year, our focus was to streamline our visual communications, so that everything sent out would have a similar look and feel, and not get lost in the shuffle. We tried to make it easier for our clients li t to t locate l t our specials i l on flflyers, kkeeping i a theme th similar i il tto the th look l k and feel of our rate card. This allowed us to stand out more from our competition. We feel our overall efforts to maintain awareness, grab some deserved new awareness, reach out to past clients and develop meaningful and lasting relationships with our current clients has lead to our success where others in our city are failing. One l local l magazine i completely l t l shut its doors, and another was acquired by a more successful competitor. Our onlyy real apples to apples competition is shifting g ears and heading in a new direction on audience, branding and delivery of content. We are not losing ground, but maintaining our “turf” in this war for advertising dollars.
