LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION January 20, 2010
Dear CNBAM Judges: I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Kim Patishnock for CNBAM’s Graphic Designer of the Year. Kim has worked as a graphic designer at Central Michigan Life for more than two years. I was immediately struck with her abilities to not only create effective advertising for a broad spectrum of advertisers, but to do so under the pressure of daily deadlines and the demands of 20 account executives. I think this is one of the things that truly sets Kim apart from the many good designers we’ve had over the years. Kim has always approached her role here with the complete understanding of her responsibilities to the advertising department’s success. Kim is a true team player in every sense of the word. With our bonus structure of paying for spec ads created, it would have been easy for Kim to simply have just cranked out average, effortless designs. But Kim understands the greater purpose of her work. She understands the investment the advertiser is making in Central Michigan Life, she understands the credibility of our staff to produce designs the customer cannot get elsewhere, and the longevity of the relationships we are trying to build with these businesses. Kim never backs down from taking the time to design ads that go beyond the clients’ expectations. She takes the time to find the “right” art, choose the “right” font, and present the “right” design. Kim will stay until she satisfies the customer. And, if Kim can’t find the right art, she creates it. Kim is a phenomenal illustrator. When given the challenge of creating something unique and original for our Best of Central Michigan 10th Anniversary cover, she surpassed our expectations. Thinking out of the box, she merged photography with original, color illustrations to create a fun and memorable twist on Godzilla and one of the water towers in our community. As a matter of fact Kim’s work on that earned her attention from the news side of CM LIFE, and she is now our daily editorial cartoonist. Kim has also served a critical role in our advertising departments move to web. She has a strong grasp of web advertising design, creating unique button, rectangle and banner ads for a wide range of customers. She truly has experience in all aspects of the newspaper business. Amazingly, Kim is still able to balance the load of full-time student with being a parttime graphic artist and newspaper cartoonist. Kim also expects back what she gives. And, I mean that in a positive way. She has earned the respect of our student advertising and professional management staffs by taking on the role of team leader among the graphic designers. Kim has helped all of us understand the important responsibilities the designers have in the advertising department’s success. It isn’t about who is the best salesperson, it is about the team. Through it all, Kim approaches her work with an amazing sense of humor, and keeps things in the office calm under the stress of deadlines. It isn’t unusual to hear her cracking jokes or see her break out in one of her trademark ear-to-ear smiles. She is always able to lighten the mood , keeping everything and everyone in perspective. It is for all these outstanding qualities, and with complete confidence, I recommend Kim for this award. Sincerely,
Kathleen Simon Assistant Director, Student Publications Central Michigan Life Central Michigan University

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION January 17, 2011
CNBAM Selection Committee: I am writing this letter in recommendation of Kimberly Patishnock for Graphic Designer of the Year. Kim is professional, considerate, and a real team player. She is good natured and an excellent communicator. The sales staff loves to work with her because she has the capability of quickly streamlining a variety of ideas into a very clear design vision.
cm-life.com
She is a great mentor – patient and happy to help teach new design techniques to fellow designers. As a collaborator, she excels at helping find a creative solution to even the most unusual design task. In the fast-paced world of multimedia production schedules, Kim is able to maintain a clear head, make thoughtful recommendations, and is always good at maintaining the clients’ needs in the foreground. She pays attention to aesthetics, communicative structure, and has a strong command of the technical aspects of design. These characteristics alone make her exceptional. However, Kim is the unique breed of designer who is also a very skilled illustrator. In minutes, she has been able to create custom illustrations specific to our clients needs, when no amount of stock artwork or photoshoot will suffice. From a cute skydiving frog, to a fierce fire-breathing dragon, or the creation of an original political cartoon, Kim is able to draw with a deft swiftness that is truly inspiring to see in action. She is a talented individual who brings the quality of excellence to whatever task or role she undertakes. We are blessed to have her as a part of our team, and it is with great pleasure that I nominate Kim for Graphic Designer of the Year. Sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern, It is my pleasure to nominate Jennifer Razo for College Newspapers Business and Advertising Manager’s Designer of the Year. Jenn has worked as a production assistant, also known as a graphic designer, for the Daily Titan since the spring of 2010. Jenn is the newest of the two productions assistants on staff and has really made his mark on the Daily Titan in the last semester. Jenn is responsible for designing the media kit, as well as many eye-catching and artist advertisements for newspaper promotions and clients alike. Some of these included in the portfolio following. Jenn was also responsible for the cover design and many ad designs in all the special sections that have published since she has been on staff. Not only is Jenn a designer, but she is also a photographer. She has worked for various publications, mostly magazines, holding various positions. From these positions, Jenn has broadened her skill set and has brought those skills to the Daily Titan by incorporating her photography into her design work. As advertising sales director, I have worked closely with Jenn on a daily basis and can vouch for her incredible work ethic. Whenever there was a project for the editorial department or the advertising department, I knew Jenn was the woman for the job. Her tenacity and overall design and creative skills always brought awe to everyone’s face in the office as well as out of the office. Sincerely,
Adrian Gaitan Advertising Sales Director The Daily Titan California State University Fullerton
.
To Whom It May Concern, Jennifer Razo has been a Production Assistant at The Daily Titan Newspaper for a full semester now and I cannot express how wonderful she has been. Coming into the position behind our previous designer, Jennifer knew she had some large shoes to fill. At first she was a little shy but that never stopped her from doing amazing work. It was almost like she let her artwork speak for her. She has since opened up and we all love her dearly here in the office. Jennifer always gets her work done in a timely manner and makes sure she asks any questions she has up front resulting in very few ads needing fixing after the first draft. Through her campaigns and her work for clients her true creative ability is obvious. Jennifer has never complained and she always has a smile on her face in the office. I never have to worry about her. To sum things up, Jennifer is a breath of fresh air around the office. I know that just within the short time she has been here she has grown immensely and I have no doubt in my mind she will have a very successful career in design. Her passion is overflowing and she can make even the most simple artwork exiting. Jennifer has a bright future ahead of her and I look forward to not only being a part of her last semester here at CSUF and watching her grow and prosper out in the real world.
Sincerely, Amber VanOrman Assistant Advertising Sales Director Daily Titan California State University Fullerton
January 3, 2011 Michelle Hamson is the kind of designer you want working on your publication. She is creative, efficient, driven to succeed and willing to do what it takes to tell a client’s story through her design. She should be named CNBAM’s Designer of the Year. My work with her on the 2010-11 rate card for The Breeze demonstrates her abilities. After seeing several of Michelle’s designs, I asked her to take on this extra project, one that is very important to the marketing efforts of The Breeze. Every potential client sees the rate card, and it has to be persuasively creative. I knew Michelle could achieve this goal. As students darted out to spring break, Michelle worked hard to produce one of the best rate cards we have had. She transformed our older design into a contemporary piece that showed clients the students who read the paper. She did it in a timely fashion, and she took constructive criticism well, always able to articulate why something was the way it was and able to be flexible with me as I made changes. As you will see in her portfolio, the final product in engaging and informational. Michelle’s work continues to impress me, her peers and, most significantly, the clients she works with. I occasionally see her in the office working on spec ads, a process she enjoys. She not only comes up with one concept for the client; she often designs two, three or more for a sales rep to present. In addition to her superior technical skills as a designer, Michelle is a pleasant person to work with, someone who is a model to the rest of our staff. I urge you to recognize her with this award.
Brad Jenkins General Manager The Breeze James Madison University
January 1, 2011 To Whom It May Concern: When I was asked to nominate an advertising designer to be recognized at CNBAM, one person stood out above the rest. I would like to take this time to tell you about Michelle Hamson, an incredible advertising designer for The Breeze. I have had the privilege of working with Michelle for the past year as both a peer and currently as her manager. Michelle is one of the most talented people I have ever met and her design capabilities are outstanding. Michelle has created many fantastic ads in our newspaper and she is often asked by her coworkers for advice on what they should do to improve their ads. Though her design skills are excellent, they are not the only reason I believe she should be recognized for this award. She is often asked to take on additional projects due to not only her skilled eye, but also because she has an excellent work ethic and great people skills. She always goes above and beyond the perimeters of the job to ensure that the final result is the best it could be – sometimes this means staying late or creating a multitude of different ads for an indecisive client. Michelle also has a great personality and this makes it easy for people to work with her. The relationship that has been built between Michelle and her salespeople is the model we wish for all our advertising staff to obtain. They have an excellent rapport that makes the advertising process go smoothly from beginning to end and ensures that deadlines are met. Designers normally do not interact much with clients at our newspaper, most of the communication goes through the salesperson, but occasionally designers are asked to be in contact with clients. When such occasions occur, Michelle is both confident and amiable with clients. Michelle’s knack for design, commitment to the task at hand, her willingness to go the extra mile and then some, and her remarkable personality has proven her to be a great designer and an asset to any team. This has already led to her being promoted within our staff to Assistant Lead Advertising Designer. I believe that Michelle deserves this opportunity to be recognized by her peers in the field for all of her hard work and as an exceptional designer. Thank you for your consideration of this nomination and if you would like any additional information, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Amy Morgan Lead Advertising Designer The Breeze morgan.breeze@gmail.com
