January 15, 2010 This letter of reference is written on behalf of Amanda Ringel. I have known Amanda for the last three years while I was a design advisor and mentor for the staff of the Daily Skiff, the Texas Christian University student newspaper. In her role as a designer, I was impressed with her enthusiasm, creativity and dedication. She accepted assignments with a professional and inquisitive nature. She had a natural sense of creativity and employed a balanced and thoughtful approach to her work. These skills allowed her to produce accurate and quality results. Amanda was open to criticism and sought feedback to improve her work. In her management position, Amanda gave consistent and clear instruction and guidance to those who worked for her. She was a responsible and diligent design director and was neither tentative nor abrasive in her approach. She worked well with editors and other staff members, always keeping a clear line of communication open. Amanda had a confident and good nature that gave way to a well-rounded and positive personality. From what I have observed, the relationships she created with students outside of the newsroom were genuine and amiable. In talking with other professors, their opinions of Amanda are similar to mine. Amanda would be a great addition to any organization. She is a resourceful and dedicated performer who will excel when given the opportunity. Please contact me if you have any questions. Sincerely yours,

Dear CNBAM Judges, It’s a great pleasure to write to you today to recommend and endorse Carly Hoover for College Newspapers Business and Advertising Managers Designer of the Year. Carly has been a designer with The Kansan since the Spring of 2009 and has consistently proven to possess not only the highest caliber of design skills but also one of the most outstanding work ethics that I’ve ever come across. As a designer one cannot help but be impressed by her versatility. Whether one asks Carly to design a campaign for a local optometrist, a full-page ad for a Kansan promotion or the rate card itself Carly handles each project with a unique style but also with the highest level of skill that one could ask of any designer be they a college student or a professional. Carly truly understands that an ad must appeal not only to the advertiser but also to the audience that will be viewing it as well. She truly understands the target audience that her designs will be seen by and thus tailors them to be appealing to the eye but also to draw an immediate response as well. Carly’s work for The Kansan this past year has been absolutely outstanding. For our Back to School issue this summer Carly was faced with a seemingly insurmountable list of tasks as the ad staff sold a record amount of revenue into the issue and thus a record number of ads as well. In a week and a half period Carly herself needed to design five different ads promoting our Hawk ticket promo, the cover to our Menu Guide, several ads for the menu guide, a 18”x24” full-color football schedule poster and the entire rate card for The Kansan along with helping out on random ads here and there. I myself wondered if Carly would crack under the pressure but instead she produced work that was even better than her normal excellence. As creative director the rest of her creative staff fed off of her energy and work ethic and worked night and day until every single ad for Back to School was created. This energy has carried over to the Fall as well and has set the bar for all future creative staffs. In my opinion when you consider Carly’s skill, attitude and leadership she makes the perfect combination for Ad Designer of the Year. She herself has been a major factor in our success as an organization this past year and I hope you will see fit to reward her efforts with this prestigious award. Sincerely,
Jon Schlitt Sales and Marketing Adviser The University Daily Kansan

The University Daily Kansan
Dear CNBAM judges: It is my privilege to recommend that my friend and peer, Carly Hoover, be named the CNBAM Designer of the Year. In 2010, I watched Carly develop as a designer and as a leader at The University Daily Kansan. During the spring semester, Carly served as a Zone Creative, managing an entire sales team’s list of clients. She serviced each of her five sales reps’ lists, each with more than 25 local, regional and national clients. She amazed not only her zone, but also our entire staff with the work that she produced. It was clear that she had an amazing talent, and on top of that she had the ability to produce fantastic work on any deadline. She dedicated a substantial amount of time not just designing, but also getting to know the business personally. She worked one-on-one with many of her reps to produce great advertising campaigns that spoke to our target audience. She quickly became a fellow problem-solver. Her zone team loved her and her clients were always impressed. It is safe to say that the job of selling campaigns became much easier after she had a hold of the accounts. During the summer semester, Carly served as Creative Director. She was in charge of training two brand new design hires, as well as working on all the promotional material for The Summer Kansan. As the summer Creative Director, Carly was responsible for a massive amount of work as the annual Back To School edition and all of its subsequent promotions and materials came into play. Carly also had to help new creatives build their own campaigns, all while working a second job. Finally, as a summer project, Carly also totally redesigned The Kansan’s rate card and media kit. This was a massive task, and in order to hit final deadline she had to work many extra hours and take up much of any free time she may have had. While all of this responsibility placed on Carly was fantastic for The Kansan, it surely must have been quite daunting to someone serving her first semester as Creative Director. However, Carly never backed down. If anything, that Carly was able to produce such an amazing rate card (attached) and summer promotional materials is even more impressive. This fall, I had the privilege of working with Carly one-on-one as I served as Advertising Director. Because of all her hard work in the summer, The Kansan already had a huge leg up in rebranding itself to clients. Our new staff business cards, sales sheets and promotional materials all reflected the design of the rate card, delivering a consistent image to each of our clients. Carly’s next task was to rebrand The Kansan’s image to our primary target audience – University of Kansas students and staff. Carly and I worked closely to create a new, fresh image for The Kansan. We knew that our audience was evolving, and with a plethora of new media options for them, The Kansan had to stay ahead of the curve in both design and content in order to stay relevant. Carly created thoughtful and provocative advertising campaigns for nearly all of our Kansan products including: Kansan. com, Kansanguide.com, Jayplay tabloid, the Basketball Poster Series, Weekly Specials and several special sections. Much of her work on these products is attached in this packet.

Carly took the rebranding process a giant step further. She utilized student focus group research done by our marketing team and created a new campaign for The Kansan. The rebranding campaign included a redesign of our website and masthead, as well as a solid plan for promotion. As always, the work she completed on this project was engaging and imaginative. On top of all the work she did to promote and market The Kansan and its many products, Carly also designed for two client accounts that I myself decided to handle personally during my time as Advertising Director. The first was Dr. Kevin Lenahan Optometry. Before the fall of 2009, Dr. Lenahan pulled his entire $20,000 yearly account out of The Kansan. He became a client again that semester after an extensive needs analysis session and subsequent rebranding effort. Because of the great work Carly did for his account, Dr. Lenahan continued to find success after advertising with us. He remains a loyal account, and one of the advertisements, Carly created for him can be seen in this packet. Carly and I also worked on the KU Student Senate Account. Student Senate was an account that pulled their advertising after a massive dispute in advertising and editorial policies that resulted in the former Student Body President proposing legislation that would cut The Kansan’s student funding completely. This would have resulted in a loss of $83,000, or 10 percent of our total annual budget. Luckily the legislation was deemed a direct violation of the First Amendment by the University’s Chancellor and thus struck down. But the relationship between Senate and The Kansan was damaged, to say the least. Carly and I worked extensively to create a campaign that spoke to all of Senate’s audiences and leveraged the brand position they had on campus. When I presented the creative and plan to Senate, they loved it, and reinvested $10,000 in advertising in The Kansan. This would not have been possible without Carly’s work on the account. Carly Hoover is in the business of bringing ideas to life. Time and again she amazes her peers on staff with the work she produces, always keeping in mind that above all, our clients’ needs are the top priority. I have served The Kansan as an Account Executive for two semesters, a Zone Manager and as the Advertising Director, and I can say without a doubt Carly is the most gifted of all the creatives I have worked with. The creatives she coaches have made great strides in developing their own design skills, and each of them is ready to become a leader in the creative department after her instruction. I believe her work speaks for itself, and it is my hope that you will bestow the honor of Designer of the Year to Carly for all of the amazing work she has done for our publication and its clients. Sincerely, Joe Garvey Advertising Director
