On October 15, 2011, The Daily Egyptian published its second annual Game Day Edition. The strategies for this edition helped make it more profitable than the previous year. Adding to that success this year was a more aggressive sales staff and more time to brand and promote the edition. At the end of the spring semester and beginning of the summer 2011, The Daily Egyptian recruited new advertising representatives who displayed a positive energy and sales drive. The staff was then trained to exhibit an aggressive approach to their daily sales routine. The Game Day Edition strategies were initiated sooner in the fall semester, which gave the advertising representatives the advantage of more time to contact clientele. Compared to the 2010 Game Day Edition, more clients were approached for the 2011 edition. When the representatives were prospecting in 2011, the clients were able to see the actual copies of the 2010 edition and therefore they knew more about the edition, which became a big advantage compared to the previous year. The first annual Game Day Edition was distributed at the Southern Illinois University homecoming football game and at local businesses in the city of Carbondale. The Game Day Edition this year was promoted as soon as the fall semester started. The edition was promoted through a series of house advertisements and word of mouth to clients that the edition would be handed out at the Southern Illinois University homecoming football game as well as at locally distributed again. An addition to the Game Day edition this year was the revealing of the new Gus Bode (the mascot of the Daily Egyptian), which was voted on by students, faculty, town locals and members of the surrounding communities. The voting took place in an online poll, which was promoted by a series of house ads as well as an online house ad. The new Gus Bode with the most votes was advertised to be on the cover of the 2011 Game Day Edition. The Gus Bode promotion allowed the advertising representatives to have more incentives for the clients to be in the edition due to increased awareness on the SIUC campus. Over all, The Daily Egyptian Game Day Edition was a success due to a more aggressive approach and more effective promotions.
Kent State 4C – Best Sales Increase of a Special Section
Our Renter’s Guide is usually a profitable section for us. So much so, that we publish two issues of it, one in the spring and one in the fall. We usually average around $4,500-$5,000 for the spring edition and around $3,500$4,500 for the fall edition. Fall Renter’s Guide usually brings in less revenue due to the rentals being filled for spring. Our goal for fall 2011 was to not only exceed the spring edition, but to reach a goal of $6,000 in revenue. This is an amount we have never been able to achieve on a fall Renter’s Guide. We knew in part that we had a new rental property that would add revenue, but we also came up with several strategies to ensure that this edition was more valuable. Challenges • Fall Renters is usually smaller due to students having year leases • We maintained the same rates from the spring • The same advertisers year after year were those in the section with only one new property in the mix. • Our discounts were not enough reason to be in the section • Many smaller clients are afraid they will be lost in the shuffle • Due to color popularity, printing costs are troublesome Our Strategy • Really focus on special placement • Place the emphasis of larger ads to stand out • Utilize the section flier as a mass mailing to all clients o Flier for fall would be in color as opposed to B&W like done in the past • Utilize the section flier as a filler display ad o Run in color • Utilize the section flier as an email blast to all clients o Flier was designed in full color and not B&W • Meet with all large clients in person. Take the previous guide as a focal and explain what the significance of receiving the campus rate really means. • Create more visual fillers to accompany the ads. We do not use Editorial in our special sections, but we often use fillers with information for renters.

In the fall, we saw an increase of 374.5” and a total of $4,339.85 more in revenue. This is equivalent to a 90% increase over spring. Implementation of Strategies The best strategy used was to meet in person with our largest clients. Representatives tend to get comfortable in a routine of phone and email. We required all reps to meet in person. They took the previous edition, the advertising flier and in some cases spec ads. Once they met with the client, they explained the special discount and the actual savings they would receive. The Campus rate is 25% off the standard rate we have. The representatives worked out the numbers for the client while in the meeting. This explains why so many of them booked larger ads. They now understood what the discount meant, and why it was so valuable. Another strategy was to focus on special placement. In the past, we had let the client tell us if they wanted a special position. For the fall, we offered the special placement first and then went to ROP if they were not interested. We used the previous edition to point out the placements. By looking at the previous edition, clients were more prone to purchase the special placement simply because they wanted to one-up their competitors. This gave us two front-page placements, one back cover placement and a double truck. Thirdly, we better utilized our flier created to promote the section. We mass mailed, email blasted and used the flier as a filler for the month before the edition. Finally, we created a better product visually. In previous editions, we had just used the filler space with some renting information. In the fall edition, our design team used photos and designed illustrations to better call out the fillers. Our fillers became a more interesting read, further making the edition valuable to pick up. Overall, the fall edition of Renter’s Guide was the largest revenue we have ever achieved for Renter’s in the 83 years of the Daily Kent Stater. The rental properties were very pleased with the section and we had almost our entire circulation picked up for that day. Needless to say, we have big shoes to fill for spring 2012!

Best Sales Increase of Special Section
This year we were able to almost double last year’s welcome back issue, which was our largest grossing issue last year. We went from $8,272.02 in 2010 to $15,229.44 in 2011. A lot of the success is attributed to the welcome back bundle that helped us sell about $8,000 the other contribution to the success of the issue was the re-‐ organization of the sales teams into a three person team responsible for multiple duties within development of the territory. We also had a special incentive program set up for clients that gave them additional advertising promotions for spending a certain dollar amount with us. The magic formula was pushing the long-‐term packages after our welcome back bundle expired. Since our main goal was to build pages for other issues we made it a point to sign our clients into long term contract, which all started with the welcome back issue. The issue which we 40 pages last year, grew to 64 pages this year, and is the biggest issue we have put together to date. The incentive bonus for the students was a dollar per insertion for the contracts signed. (ex. If a student signed a client into a 40-‐insertion contract, they would get $40 bonus on their paycheck) This worked extremely well as a motivator. We focus in the summer on our Orientation Guide and Welcome Back Issue because it is what people are most interested in, however we are really trying to get them to run long-‐term because that is where they see the best results. By default lots of client’s long term contracts starting with the welcome issue. We also ran a special week long special for pick-‐up allowing clients to get the same ad in the next two issues for 30% off. Another big draw was the vendor fair that we worked with the Student Life and Development office with. This vendor fair that was managed and put on by Ka Leo allowed us to attract advertisers looking for face-‐to-‐face interaction and as part of the deal they needed to advertise in the paper. This deal helped seal additional advertising for the welcome back issue. What I think is amazing our sales increase is the fact that it was over the biggest issue from last year and we are going to strive to have the same increase for next year. Thanks, Rob Reilly
