Administration, former undergraduates offer advice to incoming freshmen NICHOLAS PALOMINO MENDOZA @NPMendoza The transition from being a high-school senior who knows all the ins and outs of campus to being a freshman lost in a sea of 60,000 plus students can be difficult for many 18-year-olds. Moving away from parents, often many miles away, and saying goodbye to old friends and family members is exciting but can cause stress and lead to bad habits, or even worse, poor academic performance. Kelley Smith, a recent business graduate, said looking back on her college career, there are several pieces of knowledge she would pass down to incoming freshman. One of which is to visit ratemyprofessors.com, a website where page 7

“I wish I would have known how to strengthen myself and build a healthy support network,” she said. “Instead of being forced to surrender to an atmosphere of negative behaviors, I think freshman should try and stand up to that stuff and say no and help their friends say no if they can.” Career services assistant director Scott Berren said freshman should take advantage of career services and try to do as much research as possible when choosing their majors and mapping out their education. He said juniors, seniors and alumni more commonly use career services, but freshman can benefit greatly as well. “Seeing what the connection between a major and a career early on in somebody’s academics is going to help them enjoy their education more, while also helping them determine how they are going to relate their major back to what their career is,” he said. students can share their experiences regarding professors and classes. She said entering a class without knowing anything about it or the professor can be a disaster and lead to a long semester full of struggle and frustration. Smith also said scheduling classes with time restraints in mind, specifically morning classes, is crucial. “I wish someone would have told me that no matter how much I thought I would make it to a 7:30 a.m. math class, I was wrong,” she said. “(It’s) definitely best to avoid morning classes when possible.” Alexis Cabrera, an ASU alumna who studies psychology as a graduate student at Columbia, said she would advise freshman to beware of the many dangers of partying and drugs, especially in the dorms. Cabrera said the best thing freshman can do is be true to themselves when building their new network of support and friends, and stay away from those who are negative influences.

Academic advisers help students on path to degree
The transition from a high school of whatever size to one of the nation’s largest universities can be tough, but academic advisers are on hand to help students. Each college at ASU has its own set of advisers who are familiar with the individual school and eager to help students learn the most they can in the four years before leaving the University with a degree. The most important thing new students have to remember is to go to class, said Casey Self, executive director of academic advising for University College. “I know that seems simple,” Self said. “It seems really obvious, but it’s one of the things students, especially new students, seem to have the most trouble with.”
Professors from all majors have varying attendance policies, but even a student who scores instructors who don’t dock points for missed classes can have
trouble keeping up with lessons if they skip class. Students can find resources through Blackboard and the University’s web portal, myASU.
“MyASU is critical,” Self said. Just as critical for a student’s academic success is consistently see

checking his or her ASU email, he said. All students receive an ASU email address when they start school, and they can access this account through myASU. Students can also redirect their ASU email accounts to be forwarded to their personal accounts, but failing to check their ASU email frequently is a sure way to miss out on important information. “That’s how the department keeps in touch with students,” Self said. Students, meanwhile, should keep in touch with their professors. Advisers urge students to make time to go and talk to professors during their office hours, especially if they have questions or are having trouble with any work. “I know students get intimi-
dated and scared of going and speaking to their professors,” Self said. “It can be intimidating at first, but students shouldn’t be afraid to talk to their instructors. They’re there to help.” And if students are having any trouble, be it academic, financial, physical, emotional or otherwise, they should reach out to their professors, advisers or other campus resources. “When they’re struggling with anything, they need to ask for help,” Self said. Dania Lopez, a biochemistry senior, said she wished she’d taken advantage of her access to advisers and other academic resources when she started school. “ASU offers all sorts of great resources, like the advisers and tutoring and supplemental classes,” she said. “You’ve got to use them.” Reach the reporter at julia.shumway@asu.edu

Freshman can exercise, eat healthy to avoid ‘freshman 15’ NICHOLAS PALOMINO MENDOZA @NPMendoza It is what college campus legends are made of, and it seems to be every freshman’s biggest fear. It’s not bad grades or longing for mom’s home cooking — it’s gaining the dreaded freshman 15, the 15 or so pounds that freshman tend to gain in their first year of college. One study, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and done at an anonymous university, found that students gained an average of eight pounds their freshman year. However, more than 30 percent gained over 10 pounds and about 20 percent gained 15 or more. Another study, funded by the federal government and also done at an anonymous university, found that males gained about

six pounds and females gained about four pounds their freshman years, with the large majority of that weight gained in the first semester. However, 20 percent gained 10 or more pounds during the freshman year, and 6 percent gained 15 or more, while 17 percent were overweight or obese, compared to only 14 percent at the start. Justin Zeien, chair of the Health and Counseling Student Action Committee, said he gained the freshman 15 in his first semester but lost the weight in his second semester. He said HCSAC promotes a “well devil” lifestyle that includes exercising regularly, making healthy, balanced food choices and avoiding fast-food “traps,” especially in the Memorial Union. Zeien said HCSAC partners with the Well Devils, another club pAge 12

on campus, to provide interactive tools and maps so students can find good places to be active and de-stress. “We provide resources to inform people how they can be active and not get cooped up in their dorm rooms,” he said. “Being active, working out, joining intramurals and that sort of thing can help people avoid the freshman 15, because it really does happen to people.” Colleen Davis, a psychology sophomore, said she avoided gaining any weight during her freshman year, mostly by watching what she eats and working out. “When you are young you think, ‘Oh I can eat anything and not gain weight and not have to

ASU Libraries blooming with resources JULIA SHUMWAY @JMShumway The number of FourSquare check-ins at “Club Hayden” may explode each semester during midterms and finals, but Hayden Library, along with each of the other ASU libraries, is full of resources to help students all year long. “The ASU Libraries has library locations on all four campuses, plus millions of resources available online,” ASU Libraries marketing and outreach director Jennifer Duvernay said in an email. Finance junior Channing Song said he spends some time in Hayden Library nearly every day. “I have a collection of overnight passes for here,” he said. It began being part of his routine in his freshman year, when he’d slip into the library between classes to study.
He said the convenient location in the middle of campus and a dependable Internet connection made the library a great place to study, and that he and many of his fraternity brothers study together there. The library’s atmosphere helps him keep on task, he said. “It keeps you out of wasting your time,” he said. “You’re not going to come to the library and watch Netflix. When you can see everyone else studying around you, you end up studying too.” Each library includes individual and group study areas and computers so students can study in the most beneficial way. The libraries have “Quiet Zones” where students are guaranteed silence for working, as well as areas where collaborative work and talking are permitted. SEE

During the school year, Hayden Library is open 24 hours a day Monday through Friday for students who are pulling allnighters or do their best studying in the wee hours of the morning. Other campus libraries are also open late. Both regular librarians and subject librarians who are research experts in student majors are able to help students find resources, books and guidance. Librarians are available through the 24/7 online Ask a Librarian chat, as well as by phone, email and in person at the libraries’ information desks. Students can also read the

full text of many resources for research papers and see lists of the best resources for specific majors, courses and subjects online at www.lib.asu.edu. Industrial design sophomore Elizabeth Hirtzel said she started using the library more this summer after she lost Internet access at her house, but that it’s beneficial for students to use as a resource when they need it. “I only used it when we had to for classes like ASU 101 and English,” she said, “but it’s good to know how to locate things. I didn’t realize we had such a selection of books and how specialized they are.”

Recycling with Arizona State University and Outlaw Comedy Every year, Arizona State University ushers in its new Freshman Class with ‘ASU Welcome Week.’ After a week of opportunities to get acquainted with ASU, students are then invited to the capstone event of welcome week: Outlaw Comedy’s ‘ASU’s First Laugh’ Comedy Show. Outlaw Comedy hosts the show in the ASU Gammage Auditorium, and offers world-class entertainment year in, year out. There is more, however, to Outlaw Comedy than just a yearly comedy show at ASU. Last year, Outlaw Comedy partnered with University Sustainability Practices (USP) and aided in the ‘Zero Waste by 2015’ campaign. Many of the ways Outlaw got involved were through volunteer events that took place at ASU football and baseball games. Engaged in over 35 different events and completing over 1,000 hours,
students would help others in anything from raising awareness about the Zero Waste Initiative, to helping Sun Devil tailgate parties recycle before the big game.
This year Outlaw Comedy is back, and ready to achieve an even bigger presence with USP during the 2103-14 school year, but we would love to have your

How to register for classes Step One: Apply for Admission All new students will ďŹ rst need to apply for admission to ASU. All new undergraduate students should also follow these additional steps for enrollment to ASU. Continuing ASU students can skip this step and move on to step two. Step Two: Check Registration Date After admission, you should check your assigned registration date. This is the date and time that you can begin registering for the upcoming semester. While you can register anytime from the beginning of your assigned registration date through the end of the registration period, ASU strongly encourages you to register as soon as possible. Newly admitted freshmen will have their registration date on the day they
attend their Orientation Program. You can sign in to My ASU to view the date and time of your assigned registration date. Note: registration dates are not required for summer sessions. Consult the Academic Calendar for more information on important dates and
deadlines. Step Three: Clear any Registration Holds You should sign in to My ASU to determine if you have any holds that will prevent you from registering for classes. Exam-
ples of registration holds include missing transcripts, unpaid fees, academic advising requirements and immunizations requirements. Clearing registration holds as quickly as possible avoids deSEE
