Hello CNH! Hopefully you are embracing the lovely hot fall weather, I also am so excited to see all of the fun events going on around the district. If you are new to CNH, welcome! I hope you have found a positive support system with the school you attend and are already considering ways on how you can contribute toward their future. I look forward to one day meeting each and every one of you by the time this year is over. With my honest opinion, I only see this district improving as each day passes. Clubs are growing, clubs are chartering, membership is motivated to only contribute more. Make sure we are open to all new and creative idea and are supportive to see growth with everyone around us. Make a positive effort to help your friends around you and that positivity will ripple to cause an explosion of good vibes around CNH! I'm proud of you all, keep rockin! In October we had both the Crazy Kompetition for Infants North and South, and in total we raised over $4600 for the Pediatric Trauma Program, shoutout to the District FiFun Committee. Additionally, the district held our Service Unity Week and Day, thank you to all those who participated in order to unite our district for service. Although we are now over halfway done with the term, there is still so much more to look forward to such as District Large Scale Service Projects and DCON 2018! Hope you enjoyed the largest Fall Training Conference ever! #4000MemberCNH
Wow, it's already autumn and more than half way through the term! Congrats to the clubs for making it through the summer, I know it could be challenging since that's the slowest season for Circle K International. However, I'm glad to see that there was still a lot happening within the district! Thank you to the article writers and club officers submitting articles for sharing their Circle K stories to the California-Nevada-Hawai'i district. I hope fall semester/quarter is treating you better than the weather has, and your clubs were able to get a lot of new members. If not it's okay, just keep tabling and showing your community what CKI has to offer. Lastly, keep up the good work! If you ever need anyone to talk to, you can always contact me or anyone on district board. Stay Sunny!
The leaves are falling, summer is over, we are back in school‌ Congrats CNH you have made it past the heat and now you are back in session for the heavy recruitment and exciting events to come! Thank you to everyone who shared their amazing experience with me about events from BIG District held Conferences to very meaningful services to the community, I love them all! Now that Fall is here I hope to read more of everyone's amazing stories in the next issue of Sunburst ranging from the wild adventures at FTC to the lovely romantic nights of maybe Masquerade Ball? I hope fall semester/quarter will be less HOT so you all can enjoy the a e s t h e t i c festivities to come, and also good luck to everyone with tabling and recruitment to show everyone the amazing opportunities that CKI can offer!
Los Angeles City College (along with Reener from Cal State LA and Amanda from Pasadena City College) served in the Puente Community Arts Festival on Saturday July 29th. This event’s purpose was to promote unity among the community. Also it highlighted the children as it taught them to be more accepting towards their own community through activities like making bridges out of Popsicle sticks. With the kid’s bridges, attached was a short description of their bridge and what the bridge signified to them. This festival offered many different shifts/positions where we could help. We started off by setting-up of the event and several of us were to assigned to sweep around the place where the festival was held. Throughout the duration of the event, we were placed in different stations to help whether it was selling event merchandise, or cold drinks as well. We also helped out at the animal pen that was brought in. In the animal pen, we had to make sure that the kids didn’t
hurt by the animals, when playing and petting them. Not only that, we had to block the exits of the pens to keep the animals form escaping while the kids entered and exited the pen. Later on we also helped with the kid’s zone/ art walk as well, and at that station, we just made sure to watch the kids as they painted. In addition, we also helped the kid’s paint and color in books that were provided. This event was a pleasure to serve in because it was nice to help at an event where it promotes positivity and community unity. This event really focused on the positive aspects instead of the negativity (like separating the community through walls). These are the types of events we need right now because of all the negativity that is currently happening throughout the world. We simply need more events where positivity is effectively promoted.

626 NIGHT MARKET On the weekend of July 21-23, Circle K at UCR went out to the 626 Night Market in Arcadia, once again, to help out and also raise funds for one of this year's District Funding Initiative, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Due to a misunderstanding in ordering goldfish as the normal fundraiser activity, fundraising chair Garrick and Vice President of Service Kristy quickly came up with the idea of using a lollipop tree instead. With constant advertising and our positive attitude, the club was able to attract many people to play the game and to contribute to the great cause. For just a low price, people had a couple chances to pull out lollipops from the tree. If the ends of the lollipop sticks had a black or gold dot, they could win a prize! Thanks to many club members, a bunch of cool prizes were collected and
given out to the winners. As a bonus for volunteering at 626, the staff provided us with food vouchers, which gave us volunteers opportunities to take breaks and get free food, and who doesn't love free food?! At this event, although we had to make adjustments to the activities, I was able to create new memories with my fellow members and enjoy the atmosphere of 626 Night Market. After the tiring weekend, we made $600 to donate to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I feel really lucky to have attended this event, and I highly encourage other members to attend this event in the future as well!

Education gives us knowledge of the world around us and changes our perspective on life. However, not every family has the opportunity to provide their children with the proper resources to reach his or her fullest potential. To combat this issue, Kelly’s Closet was created to help combat this concern. For the past eight years, OCC Circle K has hosted Kelly’s Closet at the Boys and Girls Club of Costa Mesa. The event was created to provide disadvantaged families the necessary clothes and books for their children. Volunteers are paired off with a child; both have the opportunity to shop for learning materials and basic necessities to help the child excel during his or her upcoming schoolyear. In addition, this pairing also serves another purpose. By spending time with the children, the volunteers will also provide them a message: college is attainable. After the shopping, the children were provided with lunch and a scavenger hunt activity. The activity was created to help create more interaction and bonding moments between the volunteer and the child. The event, held on August 26, was deemed as extremely successful as many parents expressed their
happy thoughts and gratitude. Jeff Dimsdale, our club advisor, shared that a parent was extremely concerned about not being able to afford shoes. She said that her child only had a pair of worn flip flops and was in awe when the program was able to lend out new 2 pairs. This was one of the many stories that Jeff told us and our club felt extremely humbled to be able to share this experience with all the families. In addition, the program was able to give out laptops to students over the 2nd grade with other countless school supplies. This wonderful event would not have been made possible without the help of five Kiwanisfamily clubs -- CMHS, ECHS, and EHS Key Clubs; and Costa Mesa Kiwanis.

Development Conference From August 4th through 6th the CNH district embarked on a trip to Reno, Nevada for the second annual District Professional Development Conference, held at the same time and location as the CNH Kiwanis District Convention. Most attendees had to drive several hours to get to DPDC, but these trips were well worth it and only added to the DPDC weekend experience. On our 16hour round-trip I was able to grow much closer to fellow CKI at UCR members Henry, Jason, and Sabrina. But our in-car bonding was only a preview of all the bonds we would form that weekend. On Friday we arrived to attend a dining etiquette workshop by our very own district administrator Camille Goulet. Remember: bread to the left and drink to the right! And do not season your food before tasting it first, folks! Afterwards attendees were able to participate in a parliamentary procedure activity led by district governor Lawrence Sahagun. Everyone was able to get a better grasp of ‘parli pro’ and see it in practice as we discussed and voted for Saturday’s lunch
items. After several minutes of debate, lunch was decided and it was time to discuss an extremely important item: adopting “Milk First” as the district’s recommendation for eating cereal. Yours truly presented the case for this undeservedly controversial topic, but in the end it was unfortunately approved only after being amended to include “Cereal First” as an alternate guideline. On Saturday DPDC attendees were split into three different groups to attend three different service projects: one helped a local SPCA tidy up their thrift shop, one helped Kiwanians prepare bicycles for low-income children, and another helped in a local Special Olympics event. My group went to the Special Olympics service and there we were able to help special needs kids practice and record their athletic feats in preparation for the Special Olympics. While there, we were able to not only help out the kids, but also bond with fellow Circle K’ers from UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. Together we were able to make this event possible and bring smiles
to the faces of many kids. After service the three service groups reconvened at the scenic University Ridge Park to eat the lunch we had voted on on Friday. Thank you to UNR/ Capital for preparing our lunch!! Once we were back in the hotel the day was not over yet - we were able to attend a few more workshops hosted by Kiwanians and Circle K’ers. One popular workshop was Joe Lee’s resume building workshop; now dozens of us have much better resumes! On Sunday there were no formal activities planned so it was time we parted ways and headed back to our respective homes. DPDC gave everyone the opportunity to learn, serve, and make many new friendships - it was definitely a worthwhile and unforgettable experience. I hope you all get to experience this for yourselves when DPDC returns in 2019!

This year, I had the great opportunity to attend International Convention in San Antonio, Texas, and it was one of the best decisions I made. During my time there, I was able to represent Foothill and my previous home club, Pasadena City College, at the international level through the service projects and House of Delegates that I took part of. It was an honor to meet people from so many different backgrounds, but with the same burning passion for Circle K. I was also able to meet and grow close to my assigned team. So much to the point where most of us even plan to meet up again at the next ICON. Just being able to connect with and befriend other Circle K members from other places in the world really gives perspective to how big our organization really is. To be truly honest, it is an experience that cannot be explained through just one testimony. If you have the opportunity to attend this great event in Chicago, please do. It may be costly, but save up ahead of time and do not be afraid to ask your Kiwanis for help! I promise that the experience will be worth every second.

From July 21st through the 23rd, the presidents of Cal-Nev-Ha CKI descended on Lake Isabella in Bakersfield, CA for the annual President’s Retreat. Throughout the weekend, we participated in games and team building activities to get to know each other better. There were also workshops to help the president's lead their clubs. There, we also filmed the lip dub and that was a lot of fun! Once night hit, we learned a lot more about ourselves and we did skits to close the night! Overall, I had a life-changing time at President’s Retreat! Shout out to the Fiery Phoenixes house for being an awesome group to lead!

The Communications & Marketing Committee has been hard at work helping clubs with their graphics, creating videos, putting together resources, amongst other things. Special thanks to those who participated in CNH Circle K Week, and congrats to our opportunity drawing recipients Toki Sato and Josephine Molina! During CNH CKI Week, the Communications & Marketing Committee held a tabling webinar and released the tabling manual. Hopefully you can take something from the resources and use it for your next tabling event! Our committee has also been working on a Press Release Request Form to help clubs if they want to share their events to their community as well as working to get more press releases out from our district. Keep an eye out for more C&M content for CNH! Hello! The District Convention Committee is powering through to get everything ready to be released after Fall Training Conference! We finalized our logo and banner, and we also approved tons of documents, which you all will see soon! We got started on decorations too, so be prepared to get HYPED for DCON!
The Fall Training Conference Committee is working hard, preparing for one of the biggest Fall Training Conferences that the district has ever seen! With FTC approaching so soon, we are so excited to see all of your beautiful faces up in Sonora. Follow us into the wild on an adventure of a lifetime, as we explore the vast unknown! There is so much to expect at FTC - engaging workshops, competitive team activities, an exciting campfire, and so much more! Registration has closed, and our committee is finalizing details and plans in the last few weeks leading up to FTC. We're gathering up everything you'll need to have the time of your lives - binoculars, maps, safari hats, you name it! Be sure to watch out for wild animals on your drive up to the campsite! Check the Facebook event page for more hype and information as we get closer to one of the most anticipated weekends of the year. The committee and I can't wait to see you at FTC 2017: Into The Wild!
"The District Service Committee has been working incredibly hard over these past few months planning district-wide service events and creating new service resources that aim to continue bringing service in CNH to all new heights! In order to achieve this goal, we created and hosted our first webinar of the year called How to Be #servicegoals, started the Service Star of the Week recognition segment, hosted the second annual Service Unity Week/Day, planned the tabletop service project at FTC, created an Anonymous Service Submission Form, which allows service officers to submit questions, comments, concerns, etc. regarding their positions and/or service in general to be answered by myself and members of the District Service Committee, started a DSI Health Tip Segment that allows members to receive weekly health tips and remind them of the importance of taking care of themselves in all aspects, and released a service officer bonding system called Service Lookout Partners. We also just completed and submitted proposals for DLSSP North, South, and Hawai'i, which will be proposed at the November District Board Meeting. We hope you're excited to see what we have in store for all of you over these next few months!" The District Member Recognition Committee has been preparing for Fall Training Conference these last couple of months. We finished preparing for the FTC Fashion Show, T-Shirt Spotlight, FTC awards judging, MRP and awards recognition, and the Member Recognition Panel. You can look forward to the release of the District Convention awards and DCON Awards Manual, as well as our second webinar, which will be focused on the Membership Recognition Program. If you see any of us at district events, don't forget to say hi!
We recently held a webinar about the International and District Documents, so if you haven't checked it out yet, then head on over to CNH Circle K's YouTube channel tl watch it! Right now the Creative EA is hard at work with making an aesthetically pleasing manual about our District Documents. If there is something that you don't quite understand in the District Bylaws or District Operating Procedures, hopefully the manual (when it's released) will help you out. Other than that, we are currently working on making a manual and a draft for Club Elections. We're already halfway through the term, and you know what that means--got to start looking for a successor pretty soon! Other than that, this last update is geared towards the executive board officers, but the divisional liaisons are still collecting club bylaws. Please, if you haven't done so already, e-mail them to your respective liaison.
Hello everyone! "Happy November" means "Happy Kiwanis Family Month"! The District Kiwanis Family and Foundation Committee is excited and thankful to have you join us in celebrating the very organization we're a part of to do some incredible service! We are hard at work providing resources, engaging material, educational workshops, and support to each individual club at their Kiwanis Family core. Be on the lookout for foundation updates, social media challenges, and email announcements!
Hello CNH! Crazy Kompetition for Infants North and South were really successful! Thank you so much to everyone who helped with the execution as well as everyone who attended! We raised over $4,600 for the Pediatric Trauma Program. The committee is now getting ready for Fall Training Conference where we will be holding the onsite fundraiser Penny Wars! We are excited to see the friendly competition between the divisions to raise money for the District Fundraising Initiatives! Were also past half the term so everybody enjoy the time you have left in whatever position you have and can’t wait to see you all at FTC!
The District MD&E Committee has been providing weekly office hours called MD&Tea Tuesdays at 10 pm. We have been continuing to create and release webinars each month. Please be sure to check out the October Member Hosted Webinar Application due on Oct 15th! We are still in working progress with resources for clubs to utilize, so be on the look out for that. Thank you!
What do you think of when you’re going to do this summer? For me, it was attending TV Tapings to fundraise for this year’s Kids Rock Concert! A couple of days after finals week, bright and early on the morning of the event, we drove all the way from Riverside to Van Nuys where the TV Taping was held. We had been told to dress in costumes so everyone had their own take of a costume from wearing a graduation cap and gown to a Hawaiian shirt and straw hat to an animal onesie. They had us lined up and bussed us over to the actual recording studio where they were filming “Let’s Make a Deal,” a show where attendees of the
show get a chance to win prizes and money. They gave us some instructions on what to expect as well as when we should clap, dance, and say “ooo” and “ahhh”. Not only were we able to actually watch the show itself and see how they record the show, but we also got a chance to win a bit of cash as well! The event ended in the afternoon and everyone was tired but seemed to have a great time there. If you want to attend a TV Taping to have fun, win prizes, or help fundraise for K-Rock, be on the lookout for upcoming dates for future tapings!

On June 30th, Foothill had an amazing beach social. It was a bonfire-potluck social at Huntington Beach to be exact. The day was very hot and unfortunately there was no canopy to provide shade but attendees stayed cool by drinking water and splashing in the ocean. Board games were available but most of the play time was spent on lengthy Uno games. Later in the day, icebreakers were also played. Every attendee brought something to contribute to the potluck. It encompassed pizza, fruit salad, McDonald’s chicken McNuggets, and more. As the sun began to set in the lengthy summer’s day a bonfire was lit where members toasted their s’mores or sausages, and played hot seat. The beach social was a fun day of bonding where western officers grew closer together. It’s a CKI highlight of the summer.

On the Friday of Health is Wealth week, we took a hike up Mount Rubidoux as an exercise to encourage healthy exercise. The hike was really fun as we were able to spend time with our fellow CKI members while walking up the hiking trail! We all took really cute pictures once we got to the top to admire the Inland Empire area, pointing out where UCR was as well as other landmarks. Afterwards, we headed to Jujubar to grab some healthy eats! Jujubar is a shop that serves healthy juices and snacks such as health smoothies and acai bowls. We all took turns choosing our favorite juices or bowls and ate together to celebrate the spirit of healthy living. Overall, it was a really fun event to attend as exercising and eating healthy are more fun when you do it with other people!

On a scorching summer day of July 14th, 2017, Cal State University Los Angeles Circle K hosted “Cool off for the Summer” Hiking Social at Hermit falls in Arcadia. The trail itself is right next to our very popular and highlyrecommended Santa Anita Canyon loop. Due to being at such a high elevation, cellphone service was practically gone, so there was no time to post the trip live on social media, but that was no problem for us Circle K’ers. There were many sights to see during the whole hike on the trail. Surprisingly enough, despite the California heat, the trail had plenty of shade under the trees and plants, as well as small streams of water to help us cool off. Although some of us had a bit of trouble crossing those streams and rivers to stay safe and their feet dry. The rock pathways on the trail has a magnificent view of the green mountains of the San Gabriel Valley. Or should I say, magnificent view of the Foothills. The drive up the Santa Anita mountain, reaching nearly 4 miles up got many of our adventurous hikers a bit out of breath during the 2.6-mile hike, but reaching the end of the trail was the famous Hermit Falls. Hermit Falls is
one of the most popular hiking destinations in Southern California, a beautiful trail takes the hiker through the lower reaches of Santa Anita Canyon to the top of 50-foot tall Hermit Falls, where many people tend to go cliff jumping into a cool, natural body of water. Many members who came on the trail overcame their fear of heights and jumped off one of the smaller cliff jumps in the falls. Perfect for warm weekends throughout the year. Members that did come out hiking with us had gone through much exercise going to the falls, jumping from the cliffs into the body of water, and hiking back to our cars. Exhausted as many of our members ended up being by the end of the day, everyone overall had a wonderful time, and left the trail with unforgettable memories with their fellow Circle K members. Shout out to Los Angeles City College CKI, Pasadena City College CKI, and Cal Poly Pomona CKI for joining us on this fun event!

One early morning on September 16th, twenty CSU Fullerton Circle K members participated in the Brea and Placentia Kiwanis annual Back-to-School Shopping Spree. This shopping spree is for underprivileged elementary students to shop for new clothes for the new school year. Each student was provided a $100 gift card from JC Penney, and a Circle K volunteer to help assist them with their fashion choices and to guide them around the store. I was assigned a friendly and extremely chatty girl who obsessed over every show on the Disney channel. As we were shopping for new clothing, I learned how uncultured I was to all the new shows and all about her family lifestyle at home. After every 20 minutes or so, she would express her gratitude towards me and the people that made this event possible. She told me she would share everything with her siblings and receiving items for herself was rare. She also mentioned that she doesn’t remember the last time she received new clothes since her family always had to allocate their money for something else. Before the event, all I could think about was the work I had to do after the event and other events going on my life that made me upset. After spending 3 hours with this young girl, I forgot everything that clouded up my mind and I focused my
energy to live completely in the moment. Despite all her hardships, she was an incredibly warm and radiated such positivity that could make anyone forget about their day-to-day problems. After going through a mountain load of clothes, we finally purchased everything on her “must have” list. One of the greatest feelings that day was walking her to meet up with her grandparents. She ran towards them with a full bag of clothes, and her grandmother started to tear up. The only verbal exchange I had with her grandparents was a simple “thank you”, but just looking at her grandparents’ reaction rushed my heart with contentment. I want to thank the Brea and Placentia Kiwanis for raising money to make this event possible, as well as everyone that woke up early to deliver a wonderful experience for the students. It’s always incredible to participate in service projects, meet new people, and discover how people of all ages can really inspire you. This project has a profound impact on me and made me reconsider all the trivial matters that bothered me and appreciate everything in my life.

On July 20th, Los Angeles City College volunteered at the Chino Kiwanis Concert and we inter-clubbed with Cal Poly Pomona. The Chino Kiwanis Concert is a summer event that is hosted by the Chino Kiwanis Club and the City of Chino. The concerts took place from June to July on Thursdays 7 -9 p.m. At the event itself, we helped the Kiwanis with their concession stand where they sold a delicious variety of concert snacks to the concert attendees. The Kiwanis were selling burgers, hot dogs, nachos, pulled pork sandwiches, popcorn and drinks which we either helped distribute or prepared. Each of our members had our own individual stations we were in charge of. Some of us had to put the pulled pork on the sandwich buns and then give them to the Kiwanis so they could give it to the person who bought it. Others had to grab the cold drinks, make popcorn and hand out raffle tickets to the concert goers. Afterwards, we helped the Kiwanis with closing down shop. Overall, it was a really great experience. The concert-goers were really energetic and happy. There was a great ambiance all around. It was also great to listen to some great music whilst volunteering. The music really helped us feel energetic. We also had a chance to enter a raffle competition. Furthermore, as our school is really far from Chino, it was great to interact with the Cal Poly Pomona members. It was a rare opportunity but a great experience to interclub with Cal Poly Pomona.
