letter from the governor Hello Sunny Cal-Nev-Ha District!
My name is Tae Hyun Lim and I am honored to be serving as your District Governor for this year! Can you believe that it’s already been 3 months since the start of a new Circle K year? With that being said, summer is finally upon us! I know everyone is hot (from the weather of course) but I hope everyone is having a fantaestic summer break full of classes, traveling, or just having fun in general. As the District Board begins their planning for the upcoming events, I hope everyone is just as excited for what this year has in store! We can’t wait to meet all of you in the time to come and of course, if there is anything you need, simply let us know and we would love to help you out. Circle K has always had a special place in my heart and I hope that it will be the same for you by the end of this year! Whether you are a new member or a veteran member, Circle K always has something new to offer that one can’t find anywhere else. So start off this year with something new and different by attending a new service project or meeting a new person. The endless possibilities of Circle K begin with you and there is no better time to start than now. Enjoy the first issue of the Sunburst and stay shining CNH! Tae Hyun Lim, District Governor
letter from the 2014-15 trustee Hello Sunny CNH!
My name is Mike Zhou and I’ve had the honor to serve as your Subregion B Trustee for the 2014-2015 term. This means that I’ve gotten to oversee the California-NevadaHawaii, Southwest, and Rocky Mountain Districts. At every event I attend, I can clearly see the passion and dedication which truly makes us the largest student-led collegiate organization in the world. The CNH district is the largest district in this entire organization and serves as a role model for many others - our FTC and DCON are two of the largest events in all of CKI! Make sure you take advantage of all that CKI has to offer you. The communication skills, organizational development, and leadership experience, can all carry onto the rest of our lives and I can personally say that CKI has helped me grow as an individual. I know that I may not have personally worked with each and every one of you, but I hope that you will continue with your Kiwanis Family/Circle K journey. If you have graduated and are looking for a family outside of college, consider looking for a Kiwanis club! If you aren’t graduating, check out International Committee applications! There are a handful of committees to apply for and this is one of the easiest ways to get involved on the International level! If you need any help in your application or want to know more about any of the committees, feel free to message me at any time. Live to Serve, Love to Serve, Mike Zhou, Immediate Past Subregion B International Trustee

Editor’s Blurb THANK YO U!
Dear Cal-Nev-Ha, Welcome to the first edition of the Sunburst, the seasonal district newsletter! $34,575.48 raised and 30,331.64 hours - all done by us as a district in the past two months of April and May. That’s a lot of money and time! They’re impressive, but they’re just numbers; they don’t capture the smiles of gratitude after every service event or the relief of a family that will be able to stay close to the hopsital because of the Kiwanis Family House. But with the Sunburst and SunnyTV, we hope to capture just that with your help! Write about your favorite service project/social or whip out your phone camera, GoPro, or DSLR to capture the moments, so we can see what everyone across California, Nevada, and Hawaii is up to this summer! Thank you to everyone who contributed this issue & HAGS (Have A Great Summer)! Love, Heyun Jeong, District Publications Editor 2015-16

Founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938, March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies and a preferred charity by Circle K International. This April, various clubs and divisions volunteered at the annual March for Babies and fundraised for the cause!

HOMELESS GARDEN PROJECT With the cloudy overcast, I jumped onto the pitchfork to pierce through the mushy soil in order to reach the roots of the crabgrass. The intense cold did not hit me as I kept my momentum going to get rid of these invasive plants. My party’s job alongside with Rotaract Club was to clear one of the many pathways of crabgrass. We stayed from 10am to 12pm. The process to get rid of the plants was tough. First, we used the pitchfork to break apart the dirt to loosen the deadly grip the plants had. Once we achieved that, the others used the rakes to separate the dirt from the roots. Even then, the roots did not break away, but yielded on longer. Our solution was to rake
LA FOOD BANK Saturday May 16 was a morning to remember! Waking up bright and early, members of UCLA Circle K met up at the LA Food Bank, ready to make new friends and feed the hungry for our Metro divisional service project with CSU Long Beach, CSUDH, CSUN, and El Camino College. We mingled and mixed, introduced ourselves, and shared our love for service. When the event started, we were all divided into small groups and dove right into separating the donated goods! From Frozen-themed fruit snacks and potato chips to Otter Pops and Gatorade bottles, each box contained a variety of food items. While sorting canned foods and dry items was
BY DAVID LIANG UC SANTA CRUZ slam the soil so hard that it seemed like we were pounding our anger and hate of the upcoming finals away. In the end, the peaceful-looking road with green veins was now shattered into the desolated pathway of uneven pile of dirt. I thought it was an awesome experience as I got to talk to my fellow volunteers about the joy of life and other valid points while fueling my energy with hate. At the same time, we obtained free loaves of bread from the Homeless Garden Project. The bread tasted like our experience. It was externally hard yet it was soft internally.
BY STEPHANIE TRAN UCLA an easy task, picking out edible fruits was a struggle. We had to ask for advice from the one and only fruit whisperer, Lisa Chong! According to her, the secret to determining whether a fruit is edible consists of two easy steps! First, you hold the fruit and pat it. Then, you proceed to quietly ask the fruit if it’s still good to eat! This method worked 100% of the time!! After sorting for approximately 3 hours, we were finally done! It was then time to head over to Bud Namu and eat some delicious Korean BBQ with our new friends! This event not only helped us bond with other members from our division, but also reminded us the importance of teamwork and cooperation!
CKI SERVICE WEEK Circle K Service Week is a week focused on the six service initiatives Circle K partners up with. Each day was a different initiative and an event. First, we had Bookmark Making on Sunday to help promote reading for kids in honor of Better World Books Day. Next, we had Make a Change in which we had people donate coins to create a coin mural in honor of March of Dimes. We also had people dress in the color purple to support the cause. The following day we had “Penny Wars” and all proceeds went towards The Eliminate Project. This project was extended for the rest of the week. For penny ways we left out four jars according to each OCC CKI family (Marionettes, Magic Show, Lion Tamers, and Sassy
Seal Squad) and had them battle it out by putting pennies into their own jar as positive points and any other coins/dollars as negative points in other families’ jars. Wednesday was a day we showed support to the Six Cents Initiative, which is an organization that helps the less fortunate receive purified water. Throughout this day we recycled bottles and all the money raised would be donated to the organization. For the next day, Thursday, we focused on Up With People. This organization works to break down cultural barriers and create global understanding through the use of service and music. Since this organization utilizes music, we decided to have a karaoke fundraiser. That night OCC CKI went to Cafeoke
BY HELEN NGUYEN ORANGE COAST COLLEGE Ding Dong Dang and had lots of fun singing our hearts out. Last but not least, on Friday we had “Collecting Cans” to support the Students Team Up to Fight Hunger. My favorite moment during Circle K Service week was definitely the family penny wars since everyone got involved and competitive. Specifically, my favorite moment was when a new member, who was so hyped up, he brought in ten dollars of penny rolls just to ensure his family would win. Overall, the project was a huge success since we had a good turnout throughout the week and we were able to promote all of the service partners.

RELAY FOR LIFE BY CHRISTOPHER ORTEGO CAL POLY POMONA
On May 16, Cal Poly Pomona hosted its annual Relay for Life event. Relay for Life is a 24 hour fundraising and awareness event put on in places throughout the country by the American Cancer Society. Our Circle K club participated and had a team there to walk the track, fundraise, an host tabletop service projects on the side. We had a little help from our sponsoring Chino Kiwanis with their canopy and our team’s captain/MD&E Chair, Jennifer Sanchez, with her parent’s amazing generosity in helping out with the event as well. Throughout the event, there were several performances
10
and activities. Most meaningful were the somber moments with cancer survivors, as well as the candle lighting ceremony, which was a good reminder that everyone has been touched by cancer in one way or another. The theme of our school’s Relay for Life was “Around the World,” so our club decided to pick Gotham City as our city of choice. Of course, by representing Gotham, we would need help from its famous silent guardian, watchful protector, its dark knight. We fundraised throughout the event by selling Batman-grams, in which Batman delivered messages or doughnuts, and offering
Batman’s very unique marriage services, having him preside over a wedding between two willing participants or even letting people marry Batman! We had many temporary marriages and doughnuts over the course of the 24 hours, and at the end of Relay for Life, our club tied for “Most Creative Fundraiser” out of all the other on-campus clubs that participated. Shoutout to Jeffrey Golez for playing a great Batman throughout the event. After walking a few hundred laps, raising over one hundred dollars, and sleeping an hour or two here and there, Relay for Life ended before we knew it.

Spring Training Conference I see davis, 1, 2, woop north uc davis! south woop! o! c! c! Going into Spring Training Conference North, I wasn’t expecting much, and I was pretty clueless on my tasks as Vice President of Service. However, after I left the conference, I felt fully prepared to take on my role for the rest of the upcoming year! I attended the Vice President of Service/Service Chairs workshop which I took away a lot of valuable tips from. Besides attending informative workshops, I partook in the service project helping make plastic yarn. I honestly thought, “How could tying strips of plastic bags make anything?” But seeing the simplicity of the project, as well as realizing how much it could help someone, really made me interested in using it as a future service project. Overall, my first STC North was a wonderful experience where I took away so much information that I can use to better both myself and my club. I can’t wait to utilize everything I learned and see the difference that can be made!
Leadership, Fellowship, and Service, Circle K International has given me the opportunity to go above and beyond the call for service and has helped me pave me own path in this organization. The event that ignited my passion for Circle K was Spring Training Conference South. The first District event of the new term, STC South was held at Orange Coast College. I had the opportunity to learn about the many schools that make up the southern part of the Cal-Nev-Ha district and got to learn about my position a lot better. Through the many ice breakers that was held in each workshop, I was able to learn about many different people. To my surprise a bunch of us had a lot in common, and to this very day I keep in touch with them! I was again reminded and thankful of how Circle K can bring all sorts of different people together!

Senior Appreciation Night BY GABRIEL HERNANDEZ SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY
I had the pleasure of hosting the Senior Appreciation dinner for our graduating Circle K’ers. Each of the seniors honored at the dinner that night have made a significant impact on our club, and it has been a privilege to get to know each and every one of them. Whether their contributions were in the background or on board, each one of the seniors have helped shaped the club to what it is today. A home. This dinner was the least that I could do to show our appreciation for their
countless contributions and sacrifices they have made for the club. The night was filled with good company, a lot of emotions, and a lot of tissue. Circle K’ers and Kiwanians alike were able to convey how much our lovely seniors mean to us. Their absence will definitely be felt, and their shoes will be hard to fill. But this is their home, and we will always welcome them back! Thank you again, graduating class of 2015, for everything you have done! We love you. Always.
Congratulations Class of 2015!
Family Competition BY JENNIFER DUONG UC DAVIS
20
UC Davis Circle K hosted a variety of events the last weekend of May, one of them being our Family Competition on May 30 at the Memorial Union Quad! Ten families competed to determine which family fostered the most fellowship and teamwork. Games, such as a Relay Race, Blindfolded Musical Chairs, and Ninja, were played. Games typically allowed 2 participants from each family, therefore each family member had the opportunity to participate at least once.
The Relay Race consisted of several parts, such as a Three-Legged Race, a donut eating task, and a t-shirt wringing task that required the work of the entire family. Each family was able to develop their teamwork skills and show their fellowship and the Yolked Yakuza family took first place, with the Eggsecutors family taking second. As our first Family Competition of the term, the event was successful and attendees enjoyed their experience.

Spring Cazadero
BY JONATHAN WONG UC BERKELEY
Complementing the takedown of the music camp during Fall Cazadero, Spring Cazadero is the service event in which we join the Berkeley Kiwanis Club to spend a weekend away preparing the camp for the new season. After spending a couple hours navigating through traffic and listening to the radio, my car finally arrived in the late afternoon. We hauled our luggage to the cafeteria and immediately put on gloves to move wooden boards and mattresses to the nearby cabin while we waited for the other cars to arrive. Once everyone was there, we all ate dinner together and played games like Bang! and Resistance until it was bedtime. We woke up bright and early for breakfast at 7am and were given jobs throughout the day. Along with twelve others including Mimi Ton, Stephanie Yu, and James Fang, we spent the entire morning draping
canvases over cabins, loading the truck with bed frames and mattresses, and placing the appropriate number of each in all of the cabins. Some of the other jobs assigned included disinfecting mattresses, painting all the benches, building a new deck and tent, and rolling logs from the river to other places. After an 8am-5pm workday, Jack Rosano and Ana Chavez gathered all the different groups and told us to relax until the steak dinner. Before we ate, there was an arm wrestling tourney and time to make dolls for our PTP fundraiser. Everyone gathered around the campfire to make smores and listen to Phuoc’s and Debra’s stories when they met their respective significant others. Everyone woke up early again to finish the remainder of the work, and after some bittersweet goodbyes and sincere thanks, we all headed home after one of my favorite Circle K experiences so far.

For One Day, NVC Circle K members journeyed into Capital territory to the Kiwanis Family House. We spent the day landscaping outside, sorting clothes, and small things around the building, like updating the rooms’ door locks. I ended up finding a room from our own Kiwanis division - Kiwanis of Division 8! After all the rooms, we took a break for hotdogs and hamburgers. I noticed someone had a rice pot with slushie in it and asked about it and after leaving I ended up going to the nearest dollar store to get containers with my Kiwanis advisor and we headed to get slushies to end the hot day and drive home. It oddly turned out to be a nostalgic experience for me since we passed by a convention center and I realized that it was the very convention center that I had attended one of my favorite DCONs. Passing by it reminded me why I fell in love with the K family. As we drove off and I looked behind us to the convention center, sipping on my slushie - leaving behind one chapter of adventures for a new chapter of journeys in the Circle K family. A fitting end to an even better beginning.

Kiwanis One Day held in Reno, NV was a day of fun, sun, and hamburger buns. People from all branches of Kiwanis came together to clean up Manzanita Park. All worked hard giving the park the face lift it needed. It was a lot of hard work but all of the weeds were picked, the benches were painted, and the burgers were eaten! The day ended with a Volleyball game of Circle K vs Key Club and I think we all know who won...

BY ADAM MADAMBA U
Nothing else beats early morning service right? UCSD Circle K members, joined by other Circle K and Key Clubs, had the opportunity to all gather together to volunteer in one service event, Kiwanis One Day. We worked together to clean up a trail and remove bushes and weeds that had grown onto the trail path. It was a warm day and the trail was quiet and peaceful, except for some bikers and joggers. We had the chance to catch up with other Circle K-ers from Palomar and San Marcos. It was a great and fun event to attend in that we had the opportunity to really see the results of our work. Before we started, there were many weeds and plants that were growing into the trial from the sides, but afterwards, the trail looked clean and nice for everyone to enjoy. Kiwanis One Day is a fun, service-filled day where everyone in the Kiwanis Family comes together as one to take on anything and make the biggest impact they can on the community! For our divisional wide K1D, all of the schools came together with Region 3 Key Clubs and Jet Divison KIWIN’S to give an elderly woman’s yard one big makeover! Towards the end of spring, the house was also repainted, which really showed how much of an impact we made on those who needed help the most for tasks like the ones we did! Kiwanis One Day helps me share the same passion as others in the same division as mine, and I’m proud to bask in the labor that makes other people smile!

Add a pinch of Key Club, a dash of Circle K here, sprinkle some LVYP (Las Vegas Young Professionals) there, and to top it off, your friendly Kiwanis Club; you know this is a recipe for a good ol’ party. What do you call this dish? Let’s call this delicacy Kiwanis One Day! What do you expect when you take a bite out of K1 Day? LOTS OF SERVICE! Ryan Ocampo, president of LVYP and project head for southern Nevada’s K1 day, started out the day with landscaping and maintenance of the St. Jude’s campus. From gathering trash, to picking weeds, to assisting in demoliting a house, Kiwanians worked hard to beautify the property. There was also an alternative project of sorting, cleaning, and boxing books collected by all clubs. There were projects that allowed volunteers to interact with children who were a part of the St. Jude’s program. The book drive and bookmark making aimed to promote literacy. At the end, Kiwanians and St. Jude’s residents gathered to enjoy the BBQ as a uniting celebration of K1 Day. Who would be crazy enough to drive an hour and do service early in the morning? Me! But it was all worth it hanging out with the Kiwanis Family while leaving a positive impact in the community!
