letter from the governor Hello there Sunny CNH!

I hope you all had a marvelous summer and are enjoying the fall season of school! The fact that it is fall also means that we are at the halfway point of the Circle K year! Just from looking at everything that has happened, I can tell that it has been a great adventure but our journey together has just begun. Every year, Circle K has something new to offer and so never be afraid of going to a new event, traveling to new places, or saying a simple hello to a stranger. You know what Kelly Clarkson always says… “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!” Every moment in our lives is precious so let us make this year the one to remember and be the amazing members of the organization that is changing the world one member, one child, and one community at a time! I hope to see you all soon and have a great time with this edition of the Sunburst! Stay classy, CNH! Tae Hyun Lim, District Governor 2015-2016

editor’s note Hello Sunburst-reader!

Thank you for taking the time to read the second issue of the Sunburst, the district newsletter, for the 2015-16 year! Time flies, but at the same time, there’s so much ahead of us - new memories and friends to make, new heights to reach. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted an article or picture or helped me look over this issue - it definitely wouldn’t have been possible with all your contributions. See you at Crazy Komp for Infants-North or FTC! Minions Takeover Barnes & Noble Los Medanos College organized a Minion Takeover at the local Barnes & Noble as a fundraiser for the ELIMINATE Project - raising over $400 - and a community event around Walnut Creek. The event took place at the Barnes & Noble along Lone Tree Way at Antioch. Kiwanians from the Brentwood club and the Delta Antioch club came in and showed their support along with friends from Diablo Valley College Circle K and Key Clubbers from Dozier Libbey High, Mount Diablo High, Concord High, and Northgate High, who all volunteered their hearts out. Along with four activity booths - face painting, coloring, caricatures, and making friendship bracelets - we had “minions” and a banana walk around the store. Photographer Ryan Pham also went around and took pictures of Banana Roberto “Berto” Ruiz with the customers and volunteers. Special thanks to Shannon Skinner, the

Barnes & Noble event coordinator, who was extremely helpful in booking and planning this event for us. As we near the end of our 5-year fundraising initiative with UNICEF for the ELIMINATE Project, let’s invite our surrounding communities as we make a memorable last push to remove maternal and neonatal tetanus around the world!

Brides Against Breast Cancer

6

On August 8, UCLA Circle K was lucky enough to volunteer at Brides Against Breast Cancer, an event that encompasses self-empowerment, disease awareness, and beautiful gowns. Simila to a bridal convention, this event is organized around a bridal gown sale for a good cause. Future brides paid a set price to enter and are given access to hundreds of beautiful wedding dresses donated to this cause. These dresses are sold for much cheaper than usual, and all of the money raised from dress sales and entrance fees are donated to breast cancer foundations. Volunteers had a blast helping set up and organize wedding gowns before the opening of the event. During the event, we helped brides pick and try on wedding dresses, as well as keep the dressing rooms organized and gowns on the racks. It was truly a unique and amazing experience to be surrounded by women who were willing to take a stand against breast cancer. The event itself was magical in its own way. The best part was helping brides have their “Say Yes to the Dress” moment when they finally decide on the wedding gown.

The impact we had on the brides, as well as the money raised to help breast cancer, made this a truly one of a kind event. Of course being surrounded by stunning wedding gowns made the event that much more memorable. If you ever get the chance to attend this event, I honestly encourage you to do so. It was such an eye-opening and touching experience that I hope all volunteers get the chance to experience.

LARGE SCALE SERVICE PROJECT Shoveling away the dirt and excess weeds and grass that we scraped off the sidewalk, my LSSP team members and I basked under the hot, humid rays of the sun in the Hawthorne Community of Indianapolis, Indiana. After hours of labor-intensive work, we gazed at the progress we had made along the sidewalk of what once seemed like an endless savanna of weeds and excess grass. This was my team’s first LSSP day experience and just one of the many wonderful experiences I shared alongside dedicated CKI members at CKIx. During CKIx, I had the opportunity to meet a plethora of inspiring people from all around the world, from New York to Vietnam. Even til now,

members from my LSSP Team - we called ourselves “Team Team” - still occasionally talk and message each other. I’m incredibly happy to have met such charismatic individuals and learned more about Circle K International and Kiwanis International. Along with LSSP, I was also given the opportunity to participate in the House of Delegates to vote in our International Board. Hearing everyone’s speeches made me realize the difference our organization can make in our communities and the impact we can make by being a part of it. My first CKIx is a memory I will forever cherish that has helped me grow not only as a Circle K member, but as an individual.

Tinker Bell Half-Marathon The Tinker Bell Half Marathon is an annual Disneyland run where people from all over the world travel to Disneyland to participate. Orange Coast College teamed up with Irvine Valley College and Golden West College to pass out water to and cheer on runners during the marathon. Our goal was to deliver water to them in a timely manner so they could be hydrated and continue running/walking. In addition, we would occasionally cheer for them so that they would be motivated in crossing the finish line. My favorite moment during the event was when everybody started cheering, even though the rain started pouring down on us. For most people, the rain would have dampened their mood. But for us, it only fueled their passion for service. It was great how everybody teamed up and worked as a cohesive unit to cheer runners on and make sure runners stayed hydrated. Plus, I’m sure everyone

enjoyed the complementary ponchos. Despite the not-so-great weather, it was great to see us persevere through the rain to interact with and cheer on the community.

International Updates From Subregion B Trustee Jennifer Park

Hello CNH Circle K clubs, my name is Jenny Park from UC Riverside and I am privileged to be your International Trustee for the 2015-2016 term. Much like a Lieutenant Governor watches over the clubs in each of the nine divisions of this great district, I am one of eight trustees that will be available to each of the 32 Circle K International districts for growth this upcoming term. California-Nevada-Hawai’i alongside Rocky Mountain and Southwest CKI districts make up a territory known as Subregion B which encompasses 9 states and over 3,500 CKI members in total, so it is my goal to confirm that every member is given the equal opportunity to benefit from our organization. In the next eleven months I hope to be your primary resource to anything International because member education is something I value greatly and I will be working with not only the rest of the 2015-2016 Circle K International board but with my Kiwanis Family counterparts as well to ensure that you all as members are being provided the best pathways of communication. Additionally, stay updated with International news through the Subregion Facebook group, Subregion mailing list, or Subregion Google Drive all of which you can email me about at subregionb@ circlek.org. Other than that I just wanted to say how excited I am to meet you all at Fall Training Conference 2015 where all three Subregion B Governors and myself will be present!

Through social media it is amazing to see the difference we are making; there is only one month left in the Subregion B challenge! Until November 8th, all social media picture posts with the hashtags #subBEASTS #chooseCKI will enter you in a drawing to win the first ever Subregion B beast plushie. Hawaii Visitation

14

In August, District Governor Tae Hyun Lim, District Secretary Paula Nguyen, Paradise Lieutenant Governor Zach Manlapid, and Membership Development & Education chair Angie Chanthanouvong visited Hawai’i for the annual district board visitation.

Along with trying new foods and sightseeing, they hosted a “Hawai’i Trainer” for the Honolulu clubs — Hawai’i Pacific University and UH Manoa — and the recently chartered club of UH Maui College, who flew over. Next on the itinerary was the island of Hilo, where they hiked the Rainbow Falls and did service on the Hilo campus with members from UH Hilo.

Every month — with the exception of November and March — the Desert Oasis division a overnight divisional event called Weekend of Awesomeness Weekend, also known as WAW. Hosts of WAW alternate among the DO schools every month. During WAW, we partake in events embodying our three tenets with fellowship events on Friday, service events on Saturday, and leadership events on Sunday. Weekend of Awesomeness Weekend is an extraordinary way for our division to bond despite the ~230 mile drive separating the California and Nevada schools. On the weekend of July 2527, UNLV hosted the WAW in Las Vegas. On Friday, members of Desert Oasis participated in a swimming and potluck social at our Vice President of Administration’s House. On Saturday, we had a single service project in the morning where members decorated motivational cards, vocabulary cards, and socks for children at local schools and hospitals; in the afternoon, members volunteered at Ronald McDonald House and a festival called Rainbow in the Winds. On Sunday, we held a Recruitment and Welcome Week workshop as well as a divisional council meeting. July Weekend of Awesomeness Weekend was a fun and exciting weekend, and I cannot wait for the future WAWs to come!

One of the first points of contact a member has with their club is through their club’s website. For some, the website may be their first interaction with the club ever. The club website helps them stay in the loop with club, divisional, district, and international news. It’s important for clubs to keep their websites updated with current information and helpful resources. The Awards Committee encourages all clubs to submit an Outstanding Club Website Award by October 1 at 10 PM to awards@cnhcirclek.org. This application will be judged throughout the duration of October 2015 and March 2016.

Creating a club promotion video is an effective way to promote your club and recruit new members! A fun and exciting video can show prospective members what it’s like to experience the service, leadership and fellowship through your club’s own unique perspective. And afterwards, enter it into the OUTSTANDING CLUB VIDEO AWARD! Remember to keep track of all the expenses used to produce the video because you will need to submit receipts of materials purchased. Also remember to avoid using copyrighted material — royalty free music is highly recommend! Submit onsite in CD, DVD, or USB format with the written portion of the award on November 7.

SPIRIT

TSHIRT

The Spirit Award is presented to the club(s) that shows the most spirit, creativity, sportsmanship, and overall behavior throughout the entire weekend at Fall Training Conference. Apply to show off your spirit items, teach each other cheers, and embrace the spirit of fellowship. Get ready to lose your voices and show them what your school’s got! This award is due on-site at 9am on November 7.
