LETTER FROM THE GOVERNOR

Hello CNH! I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun summer because I know I did! When I think back at it, it seems like we did so much from the hours of service we did as a district to hosting our first-ever District Professional Development Conference, we already are set up to have one of the most amazing years CNH has ever had. In addition, can you believe we are already half-way through the term? It really seems like time has flown by and before we know it it will be time to install new members at Fall Training Conference and retire our officers at District Convention! Fall is known as one of the busiest periods in the term, but don’t forget that it is also one of the most rewarding times with both new and returning members coming back to take their clubs to new heights. My biggest advice to everyone during this time is to challenge yourself to meet new people and support each other. It can be a hectic time, but with teamwork and determination, we as a district can provide our members with the greatest experiences of their college careers! Thank you to all the clubs and divisions that have been so welcoming on my visitations because you continue to inspire me each day to do more to better serve you as your Governor. If I have not visited your club yet, I will be trying to make my way to you soon! I am looking forward to seeing everyone soon at Crazy Kompetition for Infants and Fall Training Conference! Special shoutouts to Donald Franks and Claire Lee for planning those events with their committees. Also kudos to Emilie Shen and Heyun Jeong for creating this beautiful newsletter! See y'all soon! Yours in Service, Alex D. Nguyen 2016-2017 CNH District Governor

CICLAVIA SERVICE EVENT By Richard Tzul, Los Angeles City College

Los Angeles City College and Cal State Los Angeles had a joint service event on August 14th. Both clubs helped out at CicLAvia. CicLAvia is a triannual event hosted throughout LA County where streets are closed off to cars but open to pedestrians, cyclists, and runners for recreational space. The event helps create a sense of community and a fun atmosphere. Plus, it aids the environment by encouraging people to bike or walk instead of driving their car; which is part of the reason why LACC and CSULA were happy to do this event since it falls under this year’s district service initiative. Volunteers from both schools were assigned the position of “crossing angels”. They worked sideby-side with Department of Transportation and LAPD officers to manage the flow of traffic on the route and direct car traffic crossing the route. The purpose of this was to reassure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

The Circle K members were so happy with the event they have already decided to help out at the next CicLAvia on October 16. They strongly recommend other schools help out at the event, if not at least attend.

Disney Half Marathon By Crystal Flores, Irvine Valley College

By Sally Deng, UC Los Angeles

This magical event was definitely worth the wait. It was organized by our Vice President of Service, Chandni Patel, and complete success. In this event we interclubbed with four schools and it was a great opportunity for our members to meet new people and create lifelong friendships. Our members were excited when the event officially began. It started off by carrying boxes to each row and unpacking small food boxes on the first three tables of each row. On the end of the rows we placed bananas that we would later pass out to runners that would pass by us. After we were done unpacking the food and placing them on the tables we took all the empty boxes and flatted them out. Then our members took this brief moment to rest before the marathon would official begin. Some were just chatting with friends while others, like myself, were sleeping a bit. After a while when the marathon began all of our members spread out to all the tables and prepared themselves to give out food to the runners. In waves the runners would arrive and we would start cheering them on. Among the runners there were young and old runners some would also be wearing different costumes of the various Disney characters. As more runners continued to arrive we gave them their box of food and banana and cheered them on and congratulated them for completing the race.

Very early in the morning on Sunday, September 4th, Circle K members woke up to drive to Disneyland to volunteer for the half marathon. The majority of the members were assigned to either the Post-Race Water or Post-Race Food stations. After checking in and receiving the volunteer shirts, members split off into their respective groups and walked to their respective stations. Since the shift began much earlier than the race did, the first two hours were spent unloading and organizing either food or water onto the tables. The sun hadn’t even risen by the time we finished setting up. Then, once the runners began to finish their race and head down the finishing chute, the volunteers were ready to hand them either food or water. I was stationed at Post-Race Water, where we would offer the runners either bottles of water or Powerade. At first, most of us were behind the tables, with just a few of us actually along the chute to hand out the bottles out to the runners. Then, once the more elite runners had passed, the crowd started getting larger and larger until about fifteen of us were along the sides of the chute, yelling out either “water” or “Powerade” while holding as many bottles as we physically could, then rushing back to the tables to refill our hands the moment they were empty. We were physically tired from extending our arms out with bottles for hours, mentally tired from an abruptly changed sleep schedule, and our ears were tired from hearing our own voices repeat the same word over and over. However, the hard-working and joyful spirit of all my fellow members kept me plenty awake and excited to volunteer! And nothing beats the happiness you feel when you see that face of pain after a race transform into a face of excitement and relief when they see that bottle in your hand.

district professional development conference

By Tommy Dang, UC Santa Barbara

Professional Development is one of the things we don't expect at first to get out of Circle K, however this weekend proved me wrong! After a long drive through the hot desert, we made it to Las Vegas for a weekend full of informative workshops and lasting memories with the district! The mocktail night and career expo allowed us to get dressed up and learn about different careers. The second day began with a morning full of service which was held at Opportunity Village, a project that is close to home for the members within the area. Once all of our hard work was complete we made it back to build our professional skills through a variety of workshops hosted by alumni, Kiwanians and others. It was eye-opening to be able to meet and learn from Kiwanians from all over the district! Thanks to the Kiwanis Family and Foundation Committee for all their hard work on the first ever CNH DPDC!

Jazzing out with Kiwanians By Sharlene Lim, UC Los Angeles

What better way to spend one of the last Sundays of summer break than to go out with the Santa Monica community and our Santa Monica Kiwanis Club at a picnic jazz festival? UCLA CKI and Santa Monica Kiwanis attended Jazz on the Lawn: Venezuela OMG on Sunday, August 28th, and event filled with chill vibes and free food. This event was held at a local Santa Monica park for the community to come together and celebrate the last days of summer. Not only was there fun music to freely dance to, but there were food trucks serving anything from burgers to tacos to shaved ice. It was definitely a fun environment to be around to forget the upcoming stress of school. The two Kiwanis branches had the opportunity to get to know each other while enjoying authentic folk music. One of the greatest things about having this event was that there was no pressure to network and it was easy to have a simple conversation. Even when there

was no conversation, it was never awkward to just sit next to each other and take in what the festival had to offer. One of the greatest things in life is to share and appreciate the simple things like music, food, and community. We were all able to enjoy those simple pleasures at the jazz festival.
