LET TER FROM GOVERNOR Greetings, CNH! Can you believe there are only 3 months left in this term?! It seems just like yesterday that we were all just elected. But like with every journey, there is a beginning and an end and we are only a few stops away from the end of the line. As we leave behind the holiday season, I hope you spend time reflecting on the achievements we’ve achieved together as a district! We had two recordbreaking Crazy Kompetitions for Infants and a tiki-riffic Fall Training Conference. As we move forward, there is even more excitement to expect with our District Large Scale Service Project North, South, and it’s newest addition Hawai’i, awards submissions, club elections, and to top it all off, we are going to celebrate together at District Convention 2017! With the end of our journey, there is much preparation to do to prepare ourselves for what’s next and for those that will be walking the same paths as us next. To the officers, remember when we first started, many of us wanted to make CKI something better than we found it and I hope you keep that in mind as you pass on the torch. To the general members, I hope this term inspired you to get more involved to help our organization continue to grow. And lastly to the graduating seniors, it’s been a tough few years balancing out our lives with our commitments, but I for one, am so excited to be able to celebrate with everyone at the Honors Reception at DCON as we move on in the next chapter of our lives. And with that, thank you as always to our lovely Editor, Emilie Shen, for this beautiful newsletter and our District Communications & Marketing Chair, Heyun Jeong, for making this all possible! See y’all at District Convention 2017! Yours in service,

SHOP WITH A COP
BY DAVID BATUL AYAN, UNIVERSIT Y OF HAWAII MAUI COLLEGE Christmas is an amazing time of year! Children waking up to presents under the Christmas tree, smiles and laughter around the O’hana; yet for many families on Maui, under the Christmas tree is often nothing but the cold floor and a picture of a family member, now serving time in the county jail. It is a constant reminder to some that the Maui Police Force has taken someone away, who is very valuable to them. Often, the children of inmates are left with the struggle of not living with a dominant mother or father figure, forcing the youth to do some unexpected things. One of the biggest issues that have been noticed amongst these youth is their hatred towards Police Officers. Started in 2004 with the Kiwanis Club of South Maui, Past-President and now the University of Hawaii’s Circle K International Kiwanis Advisor, Bruce McDonald started a program called Shop with a Cop in partnership with K-Mart of Kahului. The goal of the program is to take the less fortunate and underprivileged children of our community and send them on a shopping-spree with a Maui Police Officer, to curve their feelings towards police officers. Children were treated by a guest appearance of Santa Claus, and many of his mystical elves. St. Nicholas gave the children a special gift and one hundred dollars that the kids can use to buy anything in the store. This year, Shop with a Cop serviced sixty children, spreading Aloha and holiday cheer. “I remember hearing a kid say that he made a new friend from the Police Force. He said that one day he wants to be an officer just like him and do cool things like this,” President David says, when reflecting on the event. In an article about Shop With a Cop in the Maui News, Staff Writer Sarah Ruppenthal reported that “After all, at the end of the day, it is really all about the kids.” Kiwanis representative and CKI Advisor Bruce McDonald stated in the same article that “It’s just a real feel-good time for everyone, helpful with a long-
8
lasting effect.” There are many things that we can do to change the world. From the miniscule to the large-scale. The many things we do can change us and the world around us. It doesn’t matter how small the things that I do, but seeing someone smiling makes me feel better. As for UHMC’s CKI, there are many big events moving through the pipeline in the Fall Semester. Things like an Obesity Awareness week and many other things will be coming in the next months. Ahuwale ka po’pkela I kau hana ia ha’I (It is through the way you serve others that your greatness will be felt).
LEADERSHIP
“LEADERSHIP IS NOT ABOUT TITLES, POSITIONS OR FLOWCHARTS. IT IS ABOUT ONE LIFE INFLUENCING ANOTHER” -MAHATMA GANDHI
NEW MEMBER By VIvian Wong, UCLA I went to Fall Training Conference (FTC) the weekend before my midterm. I know, not the smartest move. But I had just finished two midterms, and I just needed something to rejuvenate my drive to study for that third midterm. On the six-hour drive, I was planning to watch Bruincast or sleep. Instead, I sang with my carpool for the whole duration of the drive. We barely slept and got to the campsite at 3 a.m. During the whole day, it was nonstop cheering, screaming, attending
workshops, playing ice breakers, and MORE SCREAMING. It for sure woke me up every time a division would cheer; everything was so lively and interesting. Even though I was so tired, I was trying to stay awake so I wouldn’t miss anything. I had the opportunity to speak a little at the Transfer Student Workshop, and I had quite a few Circle K members reach out to me for advice about the transfer process. The most eye-opening experience was the glowstick tradition after the New Member Induction. Just

seeing the amount of support from everyone involved in this organization made me feel I was part of something more. Even though the whole trip was so unbelievably tiring, my time at FTC was well worth it and I found it enriching to meet so many different people around CNH.

As a new member, FTC fundamentally changed my views on CKI ... Despite the joyful 7 hour drive, it was a great event ... due to the knowledge and bonds that I was able to develop.

RETURNING MEMBER This was my third year going into Fall Training Conference, FTC for short. Each year, it’s been a blast and a different experience each time. First off, what is FTC? Fall Training Conference is a training conference that is held in the northern woods of Sonora. It’s 3 days filled with development workshops, bonding with the people in your car/club/ division, and creating awesome memories with new

and old friends alike. Your first year will be the one you remember the most since its the year that everything is fresh and new and you have no idea what to expect. For my second and third years the experience more or less shifts away from you and your experience and it becomes more about the new members that are from your club. You try to make their experience a lot better in any way that you can. Be it in trying to connect and bond with them, or giving them advice for workshops. This year as well i was extremely blessed to be on media committee again and it was a blast getting the opportunity to capture all the great moments that happened a FTC. Reflecting back on my experience
By Karch Cabalo, Irvine Valley College this year, I realize that I have made some really great friends here during my time in Circle K and it was awesome being able to reconnect with them at FTC and meet new people as well! There were also some really awesome skits, talent acts, and workshops for everyone to enjoy, special thanks to everyone involved in making this year’s FTC really great and amazing! Overall, I’m really happy that I was able to attend this year. I’m grateful for all the experiences I’ve had for all my past FTC’s and I’m only getting more stoked for next year’s.

Crazy Kompetition for Infants I didn’t have the slightest clue about what I was about to get myself involved in. All I knew is that I was waking up at 5 in the morning and driving us all down to Tahoe Park in Sacramento so that we could participate in something called “CKI North.” I don’t think I could have picked a better time to choose my first event as a new member. Pulling up to the parking lot, I remember seeing a
massive amount of people already congregated, and I was intimidated, yet eager at the same time to compete. I didn’t know anyone, everything was already so unfamiliar. All that anxiety was dispelled when a girl from another club came up to me and introduced herself. CKI North really showed what kind of passion that Circle K carries. From participating in relay races, a human version of hungry
hippos, all the way to untying a human knot between teammates. Not only that, I was exposed to the concept of cheers for the first time ever, and was immediately drawn in. At the end of the day, we raised around $3,000 for the Pediatric Trauma Program, a cause that all of us can fully believe and support. While the event isn’t indescribable, it is definitely something that you have to experience first-hand in order to
fully understand what CKI North is all about.

SOUTH By Karolyn Sin, UCLA On October 22nd, Circle K members dedicated their Saturday morning to travel from UCLA to Stanton Park to
14
participate in the annual competition fundraiser for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). One of the components of PTP is to inform low-income families about safety hazards. The program also provides grants for SLP clubs to reach out to their communities and educate children and parents. One of the best-known projects is passing out new car seats to families. For CKI to be involved with such a supportive program, I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a
difference in countless children’s lives. When I arrived, I saw students from different clubs who were also half-asleep, maybe stuck in midterm season, but were just as excited as I was. Barry suggested our team name be “A Slice of Ham” but due to a mishearing, it became “A Slice of Hell.” Every team was supportive of each other. We were all there to win, but the sportsmanship was what kept Circle K a community of support and friendship.
My favorite college team was probably CSU Fullerton; the team was not only really spirited for each other, but also for all other teams. Every aspect of CKI South was worth every second of lost sleep. I didn’t regret waking up at 6 a.m., melting in the sun, and running out of breath with my teammates. I hope to attend again next year, and next time, I’ll try my best to get UCLA into the finals!
FAMILY CLASH BY TRACY LIU, UNIVERSIT Y OF THE PACIFIC The first weekend of December, UOP Circle K held their first Family Clash, where our three families battled against each other in relay race challenges to see who the best team was! Team Frank came out with the win. It was an awesome experience seeing everyone being able to bond, some people getting to know each other for the first time. One of our new members, Joshua Ranario said, “All members were incredibly inclusive, and the welcoming experience was very nice to be in.” We are excited to hold our next Family Clash, and bond even more within our families!

BIG & LIT TLE REVEAL BY VANESSA MARTINEZ, UCSB
the groups had to play Human Knot to see who got revealed first. After a very rambunctious game of Human Knot, everyone was ready. All the Littles lined up, and only a curtain separated them from their Bigs. Each time the curtain dropped, the air was filled with laughs. After a long hugs, Littles eagerly looked their present baskets with a smile that couldn’t be wiped off. It was truly a wonderful night where members create long-lasting friendships with their Big, Sibs, Grands, and anyone else in their Line!
On the chilly night of November 16th, the members of UCSB CKI had their hearts warmed during our Big and Little Reveal! Bigs had found out a few days prior, and were trolling the Littles super hard through Facebook and texting apps, building up the suspense for the night! Our reveal was right after our last general meeting of the quarter, where Littles first got a clue as to who their Big was. Knowing how eager the Littles were to find out their Big, the Bigs had to tease them a little, giving them ambiguous clues such as “I have dark hair” and “I’m in Circle K”. After the meeting was adjourned, the Littles had to pop a balloon with their name on it, only to find a piece of paper with a number on it. The number was their group number, and
