Through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, we are raising money to support The Eliminate Project, a joint effort of Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). Every 15 minutes, a newborn baby dies from tetanus. That short lifetime is marked by pain – with an extreme sensitivity to light, sound or contact that prevents even a mother’s touch. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Thanks to Key Clubs, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, and the Kiwanis family, The Eliminate Project has raised more than $82 million USD since 2010 to help vaccinate women and babies against this deadly disease. THE THIRST PROJECT What’s up KIWIN’S! Or should I say KEY-WINS because you guys are going to be a huge part of our year ahead. Okay, excuse my terrible jokes, but just know that we, at Thirst Project, are SO EXCITED about being selected as the KIWIN’S official Governor’s Project for a second year. My name is Kellen and I work full-time for Thirst, aka the World’s Largest (and coolest) Youth Water Org). Our mission is to build a socially conscious generation of young people that END the global water crisis. If you don’t already know, Thirst Project is 100% nonprofit and uses every dollar raised to fund water projects for communities that currently lack access to clean water. We’re a movement of young people across the globe, fighting to ensure that EVERYONE on our planet has access to clean water (600 million still don’t, which is SO crazy). This year, you guys are going to help us do just that. In fact, you already have been! Last year, KIWIN’S made tremendous impact for Thirst Project, through fundraising and awareness events. One division in particular (shoutout to Diamond Division #goldstandard) raised over $15,000 to fully fund one freshwater well for a community in need. We’re going to use this momentum from last year to create even more impact in the 2019-2020 school year. Every dollar you raise will be used to provide clean water and at the end of the year, if you guys reach your $12,000 district goal (the cost of a well), you will be connected to a community in need and find out EXACTLY where your fundraising is going (gps coordinates and all). You’ll even receive a thank you video from the community you impact. I could write for days here, but I’ll spare you guys for now. I really just wanted to introduce myself, celebrate you guys for being so awesome and let you know that we do not take your hard work & support for granted. We are PROUD to have you on our side and I assure you that you will be changing lives for the better with the gift of clean water. Just $25 provides one person with clean water for life. If you ever have questions, need fundraising advice or just want to talk (seeking new BFFs) then feel free to reach out to me at kellen@thirstproject.org. Let’s have an amazing year together, full of epic moments and positive impact! Thank you all! Kellen

B E AC H PA L O O Z A Beach Palooza is an event where different divisions gather to engage in a variety of activities with one another. This can range from exciting icebreakers to the fun and memorable spirit battles. Big Events such as Beach Palooza allow us to bond and create new relationships with our fellow Kiwanis members. It gives us opportunities to make many memories that we will be able to cherish over time and grow closer to one another. Kristin, the president of the Glen A. Wilson KIWIN’s club said, “Although tiring, my Beach Palooza experience was one that I will never forget. I was so glad to see a lot more new faces from our school come out and see what KIWIN’S was all about, and I was glad that they enjoyed their time too. It was really nice to interact with all of the new faces and even get to meet some of the people that were on the same District Committee as me.” Not only do events such as these gives us the chance to make new friends and create new memories, it brings in new people that see the Kiwanis family create special bonds with others. The rela-

14

tionship that we have with each other is something that makes the Kiwanis family so special. Beach Palooza gives us many opportunities to create such memories through games like the Finish the Lyric Battle and the Name Tag game. It offers so many opportunities and memories that we will be able to cherish over time together as one Kiwanis family. Written by Kevin Chung Glen A Wilson High School, Goldstone

FA L L R A L LY E X P E R I E N C E Hello everyone! I am Joey Nishimori, a senior from Adolfo Camarillo High School, and I hope you all are excited for FALL RALLY 2019! I attended Fall Rally South my sophomore and junior year, but I did not go my freshman year sadly. My favorite aspects of Fall Rally were the new friendships I made with KIWIN’S members and being able to bond with them at Knott’s Berry Farm by riding roller coasters while screaming our lungs out, or at least whatever was left. I remember my first time attending Fall Rally when I saw waves of people exiting buses and I thought, “Wow, I know none of these people.” There are a ton of ice breakers and opportunities to meet new people and create meaningful relationships. In my opinion, the KEY to fully experiencing Fall Rally is to hang out with a group of KI-WINNERS. Even if you don’t have many friends attending FRS, you can meet KIWIN’S members who will gladly accept you into their group. This past year, I attended Fall Rally South and I, essentially, went alone. However, when I arrived at Knott’s, I decided to do the unimag-

inable, SOCIALIZE (please hold your applause until the end). This really benefitted me since it made my time at Knott’s great and I became closer with other members. Overall, Fall Rally South has been an exciting and amazing event that furthered my interest for the organization. There were guest speakers who told enlightening stories of how KIWIN’S and PTP helps build a more positive community. The speeches emphasized the impact of the members and encouraged me to work harder to help our society. I highly suggest Fall Rally to the members who want to come out of their little turtle shell. I am still a relatively shy boy, but the energy of Fall Rally helps incite a more extroverted attitude. Plus, this is a great opportunity to get more involved in KIWIN’S and, to state the obvious, you get to go to Knott’s Berry Farm! Written by Joey Nishimori Adolfo Camarillo High School, Turquoise

Club & Divisional Events Downey High School

Fountain Valley HS

For two weeks, Downey KIWINS worked to restore the handball court murals at Rio San Gabriel elementary school. It was difficult at times and there was always something that needed to be done, but it was an amazing feeling to walk into the event, and see the dozens of students painting, helping, and laughing together as we worked to get it done. Through it all we were there until the project was complete, and though we were exhausted, we knew it was worth it when we saw the little kid‘s excitement as they saw their new handball courts. They even wrote us many letters showing their gratitude. Despite the challenge, it turned out to be a gratifying experience that our members will remember.

On August 11, Jet Division gathered at Orange Coast College to hold the August DCM as well as the annual OTC, Officer Training Conference. A quick recap about KIWIN‘S and upcoming divisional projects started off the first session of the OTC, led by Jet Division LTG, Katrina Huynh, and the DLT. In the second and third sessions, club board officers, KIWIN‘S alumni, and guest Circle K speakers led presentations on what topic they chose to cover surrounding KIWIN‘S. Some of these presentations included Keys to a Successful Board, Member Gain and Retention, Time Management, and many others. Workshops specific to board positions, such as president or treasurer, were also available to attend to cover certain tips and advice for each individual board position. By the end of the day, officers as well as members were able to learn more about KIWIN‘S, more about their positions, and how to improve both the club and themselves.

Palisades High School

Rancho Bernardo HS

On September 1st we headed out to Malibu to help out at the annual Malibu Chili Cookoff. Teaming up with the Boys and Girls Club we helped pick up trash, gave out a survey to help make the community more eco friendly and helped educate them on all the different facilities that help minimize our non reusable waste. We arrived before 11 am and stayed for nine and a half hours until the event closed for the night. This was a successful event because we helped make an impact on our fellow community members by informing them on new ways to stay environmentally friendly.

With school in session, the KIWIN’S club of Rancho Bernardo participated in the school’s annual club rush to promote themselves to their peers. The club has been largely full of upperclassmen, so club leadership aimed to gather the interest of more underclassmen as well. Since Rancho Bernardo hosts a lot of community service clubs, RB KIWIN’S did have some difficulty attracting sign ups. Despite the minor obstacle, they had more than sixty sign ups for their first meeting! With the amount of sign ups and the school year in full swing, RB KIWIN’S is ready for another great year of service with more members!
