GOVERNOR’S NOTE Happy July Grizzlies! For those of you who did, thank you for following Ryan, Jannette, Leta, Nina, Cindy, and I in Baltimore throughout the week for International Convention 2019! CNH KIWIN’S Key Club did absolutely amazing during awards with several clubs and individuals being recognized for their outstanding contributions during the past term. Congratulations to you all! We were also able to participate in insightful workshops and met so many kind and driven servant leaders like ourselves as we elected the new Key Club International Board and participated in the House of Delegates. Not to mention, I hope you are having a delightful summer so far! While the summer continues, don’t forget to keep up with your service! I truly want to emphasize the importance of staying active during the summer months and continuing efforts within your homes, schools, and communities. Put yourself out there and volunteer at your local park, visit the nearest soup kitchen, or even put together a donation drive! CNH KIWIN’S Key Club is a one-of-a-kind student-led service organization and it is my hope that you can follow us on our journey through service. At the moment, the District Board is working extremely hard to elevate our district to new heights and exceed our goals. It is our hope that you will share our vision for KIWIN’S, realize how wonderful our Ohana truly is, and learn just how much we can and will change the world. I can’t put into words how proud I am of each and every one of you nor can I wait to meet you all throughout the upcoming term. Do not hesitate to contact me if you ever need anything! Lastly, I am truly honored and humbled to serve as your District Governor for the 20192020 term. I know that this term will be the one that surpasses all of our expectations. Keep it up, Grizzlies! Never forget that the District Board is here for you and is doing all that we can to ensure that you have an unforgettable term, whether it be your first or last. With a passion to serve, Emma Chang District Governor

KEY CLUB PLEDGE

This year, ICON or International Convention took place in Baltimore, Maryland from July 3rd to July 6th. Hundreds of students from different Key Club districts came together to bond with others, listen to amazing speakers, attend workshops, and elect the new International Board!

During ICON 2019, “God” in the Key Club pledge was officially revised to “the world” to remove the reference to one type of religious belief and make Key Club more inclusive to all world views. This was the first change to the pledge in the history of Key Club.

The effects of this bacterial infection are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. Since 2010, Key Club members have teamed up with the entire Kiwanis family and UNICEF to help save and protect women and their future babies from tetanus with The Eliminate Project. Executive Board Executive Board officers are elected by representatives at the House of Delegates during District Convention. Each club chooses delegates to cast votes on their behalf. The CNH KIWIN’S Key Club District Executive Board consists of a governor, secretary, treasurer, and bulletin editor. Although all positions have similar responsibilities, such as attending district board meetings, they also have their own respective duties. For example, the district secretary takes notes at every meeting and the district bulletin editor is responsible for creating the newsletters.

D I S TRI C T CONVE NTI ON DCON is an event where members of KIWINS from every division meet up. In the 3 day 2 night convention, students from other schools get to meet and converse with each other through entertaining ice breakers. We got to meet the students in board and listen to their amazing accomplishments and what they do in the position. We also dressed up formally and attended many workshops that enhanced our knowledge of KIWINS and how we could help our community. Not only did we do work shops, we also had an incredible talent show that was to die for and a unforgettable dance that lasted all night. A new board was elected and the previous board members, along with LTGs, said their good-byes and explained how

much KIWINS impacted their life. Irene Pyo, the LACES 2019-2020 KIWINS club president quotes, “DCON was so much fun and I’m so sad to leave. But as always, I’ll look forward to next year!” Irene has always had a blast going to DCON not only to learn more about KIWINS, but to also meet new people and get to know them. DCON has not only given a chance for students in KIWINS to know more about their community, but also gave them a bond with fellow students that will last a while. E L I M I N AT E W E E K Eliminate Week is where people participate in certain events to help raise awareness and support about Maternal Neonatus Tetanus. For each day of the week, there were specific tasks you could complete to help support this project. For example on Tuesday, it was Toss it Out Tuesday, where people would use the money on something they frequently buy to donate to this project. Our school Glen A. Wilson High School, participated in Eliminate Week and rose up to $147.25 in total. Our Secretary, Serena Yang said, “Eliminate Week truly allowed our cabinet to get to know each other and went better than expected. KIWIN’S was able to raise awareness about MNT throughout our whole school.” Eliminate Week helped our school

raise awareness of MNT and saved many lives along with it. Written by Kevin Chung Glen A Wilson High School, Goldstone

NEWS OFFICER TRAINING w OFF I CE R TR AI N I NG CONFE RE NCE Are you a new, incoming, or potential club officier? Attend your division’s annual Officer Training Conference to gain essential leadership skills and training for the new term. OTC is an event led by a Lieutenant Governor and hosted for members within the Lieutenant Governor’s home division. At OTC, there are various workshops that are provided to include all the necessary information to aid an officer with their respective duties and prepare them prior to the start of the school year. This training is a great way to learn to become a better Club Officer and learn about CNH KIWIN’S Key Club. All Club Officers and members are strongly encouraged to attend OTC in order to fully understand their position, grow as a leader, and take advantage of the opportunities of OTC (such as preparing for a district board position *wink wink*). w O F F I C E R S TA R T E R PAC K S Good EEVEEning CNH KIWIN’S Key Club! How sweet! Happiness is an understatement, when it comes to a bake sale for the small, but mighty KIWIN’S members at Hueneme High School. There were plenty of smiles to go around in the club’s first official fundraiser, and the members couldn’t contain their excitement for the event. The bake sale took place on April 10th, 2019 and the event was held to raise awareness for the school’s KIWIN’S club. The determined turtles spent countless hours preparing for the event; they baked the sweets, set up the event at Hueneme High, and shed light on the event through social media. At the fundraiser, members spent a myriad of time selling treats, and spending time together. Members also took a moment to speak with students about the many opportunities KIWINS offers, and the importance of being involved with the community. The fundraiser was a success! The club gained a handful of aspiring members, and the delicious treats made by our hard-working members sold out! “All in all, it was a great experience because I got to spend time with my fellow turtles! I love this organization and how it values the importance of family. I love my KIWINS family,” said Ariana Torres. Written by Jesus Martínez

“QualiTEA Time With QualiTEA People” On May 24th, Bravo KIWIN’S hosted a fundraiser at Twinkle Brown Sugar Boba in Koreatown. Many were able to relieve stress and have good time at the event following the hectic AP season. Bravo KIWIN’s was able to raise over $100 dollars for the upcoming term. The fundraiser was a great way to cap off the 2018-2019 term as they look ahead to the 2019-2020 term.

Is water wet? Well, it sure got our volunteers wet at the Liquid Run event, where people came all day to run the inflatable course on water! Upon arriving at the event, our members were welcomed with warm and friendly faces as they were divided into groups to work at various stations. Our members helped direct cars with signs and hand out medals at the finish, and some even got decked out in life jackets to help out on the course! According to president Kimberly Vu, “The people there were so kind, and we had a blast,” demonstrating how enjoyable and delightful the event was for everyone! The event was a great way to cool off from the hot day, and KIWINNERS enjoyed it so much that they stayed back after the event to take pictures, and some even ran the course themselves! Overall, the event was an amazing experience as members got the opportunity to bond and give back to the community! Written by Tommy Nguyen

NINA’S FAREWELL Happy summer grizzlies! Though it’s been an incredible four years, it’s time for my last newsletter segment. During the 2018-2019 term, so many goals were achieved. We cheered, fundraised, and served to our hearts’ content and I couldn’t be prouder to come from such a strong-willed organization. This district has surpassed so many expectations and have defied the odds of success. However, we didn’t do it alone. I’d like to take this moment to remind you all to thank those around you who have helped your KIWIN’S journey - the club advisors who provide you a classroom, the Kiwanis advisors who come to your every club event, the parents who provide money and rides, etc. We would not be where we are today without the guidance we’ve received along the way. To close this chapter of my life is bittersweet. The precious moments containing laughs, smiles, and even tears will always remain with me. This organization has helped me construct my own meaning and perspective of life. Thank you for everything, CNH KIWIN’S. I can’t wait to see what this organization accomplishes as you all continue to grow under the leadership of Emma, Sandra, Ryan, and Angela. These four are so incredibly talented and I have no doubt they’ll break records. If anyone ever needs me, I’m just a message away. I hope to see familiar faces in Circle K! Signing off, Nina Nguyen Immediate Past District Governor
