Speaking of Africa and luxury in the same breath would have seemed unimaginable even at the new millennium.

But in the last two decades, both the continent itself and the world’s perception of high-end goods have changed dramatically. The two apparently opposite worlds have grown closer – completely naturally.

10-11 April 2019 • Cape Town, South Africa

Nature is the essence of luxury today, which is why we have named the fifth CNI Luxury Conference, “The Nature of Luxury”. I have often talked about the power of human hands, and sewing, dyeing, and embroidery. What the West celebrates as essential skills for the highest levels of couture have been part of daily life for centuries across the countries of Africa. The most dramatic change in Africa is the sheer size of its population, 60 per cent of which is under age 30. In Nigeria alone, there are almost more weddings each year than there are in the whole of Europe – with each guest buying multiple outfits for the many ceremonies involved.

The Condé Nast International Luxury Conference is your opportunity to meet, network with and learn from CEOs, founders, presidents, designers, investors and disrupters at the very top of the global luxury and fashion industry. With the theme of “The Nature of Luxury,” the event programme will explore sustainable luxury and conscious consumerism, as well as what “luxury” really means to consumers, and how brands can maintain their relevance in a constantly changing marketplace.

And, above all, for the luxury industry to continue to grow in a changing world – with a focus on contemporary values and a belief that invention is essential.

Drawing on the combined power of Suzy Menkes, Editor, Vogue International, and Condé Nast International, the world’s leading media company, the Condé Nast International Luxury Conference in partnership with Guaranty Trust Bank is the premier event for luxury business and creative leaders. The conference attracts decision-makers and influencers from over 30 countries.

“The Nature of Luxury” is a bold attempt to dream the not-so-impossible dream: to make clothes, accessories, and jewellery that promote the protection of our planet; to meld age-old traditional talent with a digital future.

Do come and join us in Cape Town on the 10 and 11 of April 2019, when a panel of speakers from the international fashion and tech industries, together with African experts and entrepreneurs will share their insights on luxury in our ever-changing world.

KEY THEMES FOR 2019 Conscious consumerism and sustainable luxury Consumer choices are increasingly driven by shared values and beliefs, rather than product and branding alone. What does this mean for luxury and fashion houses? How must brands consider the wider impact of their activities? What does “sustainable” mean for an industry built on desire, consumption and constant change? Suzy Menkes will explore the seeming paradox of sustainability in fashion and luxury.

The power and opportunity of Afrocentric luxury

Bringing together

business and creative leaders

30 from over

countries

With one of the youngest populations in the world, the African continent will provide the global luxury and fashion industry with a demographic dividend. But Afrocentric luxury draws in the wider African diaspora – a market worth billions. How can the luxury industry be part of this new movement? Additionally, how is luxury and creativity from the African continent now going global?

Strategies for luxury success As well as African opportunities, Suzy Menkes and speakers will explore the global luxury environment – from China to the U.S., Italy to Ghana, France to the Middle East.

The ongoing influence of technology on the luxury and fashion world AI, VR, blockchain, endless new materials, and devices in a constant state of upgrade: technology’s power over the luxury and fashion world gets stronger and stronger. How should the industry harness this, and how can brands best prepare for the future? In a series of new sessions, the futureoriented gaze of WIRED magazine will turn to the luxury and fashion industry.

The true meaning of luxury With myriad consumer expectations and definitions, how can the industry deliver “luxury”? What are the keys to determining the meaning of luxury for any one specific consumer? Is segmentation and personalisation now the only successful approach? Speakers will discuss and debate.
