CNU offers great teaching and small class sizes with an emphasis on leadership, civic engagement and honor. Our outstanding liberal arts and sciences curriculum shapes hearts and minds for a lifetime of service. Here you’ll discover a vibrant campus as you pursue great dreams for your future, preparing to change the world. Our undergraduates choose from more than 80 areas of study and enjoy our tremendous sense of community.

CLASSES At Christopher Newport University more than half of your classes will have 19 or fewer students. Every student is expected to be actively engaged in the classroom and has the opportunity to build more personal relationships with professors and fellow students. At CNU you’ll be asked to give your very best, and your professors and peers will be with you every step of the way. The intellectual and academic rewards are worth it.

MENTORSHIP

Our classes are taught by worldrenowned professors with a passion for teaching. Faculty-student mentorship is at the heart of the academic experience. Our best faculty members teach freshmen, as well as upperclassmen. Here you will build relationships that extend beyond the classroom as you work on research projects and conference presentations, publish materials, and study abroad. It’s not unusual for faculty and students to dine together, share life experiences and keep in touch beyond graduation. Your success, at CNU and after, is their priority.

ENGAGE

CNU has abundant leadership opportunities and a vibrant community where you will play an active role in campus life. With more than 200 clubs and organizations to join, you’ll be able to explore your interests and passions. It’s also easy to start a new club. We’re establishing new traditions all the time, and creating a student organization is one way to leave your mark. We also have one of the premier athletic programs in NCAA Division III. Our student athletes participate in 23 varsity sports, including cheerleading and sailing. If you’re not interested in competing on a varsity team, we have active club and intramural sports programs as well.

COMMUNITY Many public colleges are so large you feel like a number rather than a person. Not at CNU. With our total enrollment of 5,000 students we feel more like the best private colleges. You will experience a strong sense of community across campus — whether it’s cheering on your roommate as she competes for the NCAA volleyball championship, participating in a campus-wide food drive, enjoying dessert at the president’s residence or simply sharing dinner with a group of friends. Strong bonds are formed among our students, professors and alumni. When you choose CNU you become a Captain for Life!

FACILITIES

CNU is committed to providing extraordinary buildings that support great learning and activities. You’ll enjoy our Freeman Sports and Convocation Center, Ferguson Center for the Arts, David Student Union, Trible Library with more than 110,000 square feet of resources, Forbes Hall — an integrated science center with cutting-edge labs and technology, and a new home to the College of Social Sciences, Luter Hall — our largest academic building with classrooms, a trading room and incomparable technology resources.

LOCATION You’re going to be in college for the next four years — you should enjoy the stay. Our location is spectacular. There is so much to enjoy — Busch Gardens, Virginia Beach, Colonial Williamsburg, and many waterfront attractions and smaller beaches that dot the area.
