CAMPUS TRADITIONS MOMENTS TO REMEMBER Community of Scholars Honor Convocation Convocation welcomes the incoming class in celebration each new school year and marks each student commitment to CNU’s community of honor. New students each sign the honor code in front of faculty, staff and alumni witnesses.

Light the Night The Sunday night before classes begin, students gather on the Great Lawn to ring in the new academic year. Student organizations provide snacks and other free treats while a DJ gets the party started. All students are given blue glow sticks to throw in the air when the beat drops to celebrate new beginnings.

Signing Day Each spring, representatives from each academic department gather to welcome sophomores as they declare their majors, meet new colleagues and faculty and learn about the challenges and opportunities ahead of them in their new field of study.

The Penny At convocation, each student receives a penny for luck and to symbolize a common purpose and dedication to live an honorable life. At commencement, the graduates throw their pennies into the Geese Fountain during the procession to the Great Lawn.

President’s Desserts All new students are invited to join the president and first lady at their home for delicious desserts and beautiful views of the James River.

Ring Ceremony Juniors who choose to receive an official CNU ring, designed by collaborators with the Office of Alumni Relations, are invited to take part in a special ceremony on the Great Lawn with President Trible.

Bell Ringing The Clock Tower bell celebrates special events, like athletic victories and commencement. Each fall incoming students ring the bell after the Community of Scholars Honor Convocation, and each spring the graduates ring it in celebration of their achievement. The tower features the bell from the SS United States, a gift from the late Dr. Sarah Forbes, CNU friend and benefactor. Built in Newport News in the early 1950s, the ship is the largest passenger ocean liner built entirely in the U.S.A. the carillon chimes the hour and plays the “Fight Song” at noon and the Alma Mater at 5 p.m.

Pancake Breakfast The Sunday before finals in the fall semester, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) hosts a late night pancake breakfast. As a fundraiser for Toys for Tots, faculty and staff come together to cook and serve pancakes to students while they take a break from their studies.

Candlelight At sunset on the night before commencement, graduating students gather to commemorate their transition from CNU students to alumni. They each light a candle from the flame of another and come together to receive their alumni pin and sing the alma mater.

Student Life:

Students will continue their transition to college with Welcome Week, an immersive experience prior to the start of the fall semester designed to help students become acquainted with campus life and academics. In addition, the office provides engagement meetings and programming that expose new students to all of their opportunities and resources on campus. The office is also committed to the needs of all students through initiatives in leadership development, diversity and inclusion and campus engagement.

The beginning of the fall semester means the beginning of the football season. Come out to cheer on the Captains at home games (families are always welcome too)! Student admission to all non-playoff games is free, allowing them access to general admission and designated student sections. Students also have the option of taking part in student tailgating in designated and controlled areas. There is also another designated tailgate area for alumni, family and community members. Tickets can be purchased through the ticket office or online.

Encourage them to reach out to people on campus because everyone is in the same boat of trying to figure things out right now. If they need someone to talk to, their RA can help or the Office of Counseling Services is meant for exactly that.” - Grace S.

Resource: Center for Academic Success

Student Life:

The Center for Academic Success offers resources to students who wish to excel academically, stay on track and practice effective study strategies. Through workshops, seminars and one-on-one tutoring, students can access all of the information they need to succeed. CAS also houses the Alice F. Randall Writing Center, where trained students can help students prepare for written projects or edit after the writing process.

With over 200 student organizations on campus, trying to find where to start getting involved can be overwhelming. Involvment Fair is a great way for students to get quickly acquainted with these organizations. Students can explore the various leadership, professional, service, athletic and leisure options in one setting.

Resource: Core Advising and Registration

Student Life:

For the first two years at CNU, students work closely with a faculty core adviser, who assists them in navigating the university core requirements and prerequisites for their intended areas of study. Having a stable faculty mentor to provide resources and encouragement assists students in the transition to college-level academic rigor. Once declaring a major in their fourth semester, they will be assigned a major adviser. Although they can consult their adviser at any time throughout the semester, advisers are especially helpful as students are preparing to register for classes for the following semester.

Homecoming is a huge celebration of CNU, past, present and future! There will be a ton of fun activities taking place during the entire week before the Homecoming football game on Saturday. Once the weekend arrives, all CNU alumni, family and friends are invited to join in the celebration with tailgating, football and a golf cart parade!

CUES FROM A CAPTAIN

“October is a busy month for students, with midterms, fall break, Homecoming, RHA Trick or Treat and more! For most Captains, fall break is the first time they return home and this transition may be hard for both of you. They just finished their first midterms, have gotten used to the freedom of college and might need time adjusting back to home life. If there have been large changes at home during their absence, it can make it harder for them to get used to the new “normal” at home. Be mindful that they are not shutting you out, they are just trying to take everything in. Enjoy having them home! As much as I loved Commons, there is nothing better than a home-cooked meal!” - Brenna G.

The Study Abroad Office is available for students throughout the process of applying for a program and traveling abroad. studyabroad@cnu.edu (757) 594-8083 cnu.edu/studyabroad/

Center for Community Engagement Students are also encouraged to take part in the community surrounding CNU through volunteerism. The Center for Community Engagement has several community partners with which students can serve, so they can easily connect with causes that are important to them. “During the year, your student might wander through a study abroad fair! Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity that CNU holds very dear. In my junior year, I had the opportunity to go to Thailand for a semester. This opened my eyes to new people, new experiences and an amazing new place that is something I am grateful to look back on. There are so many opportunities that cater to all levels of comfort, financial cost and time, ranging from two weeks to a whole semester, all over the world! Take time to talk to your student about their interest level in going abroad!” - Meghan R.

“With the start of a new semester, January marks a time for new beginnings. If your student is considering going through the formal recruitment process to join a sorority or a fraternity, don’t get too caught up in the media portrayals of Greek life at other institutions. Our Greek community is very unique in that students here are very supportive across councils and passionate about serving their local and national philanthropies all while living out their espoused organizational values. With that said, encourage them to take time to reflect on their personal values, which philanthropic efforts they would be most excited to support and to get to know the individuals they will soon call their sisters or brothers.” - Lindsay C.

“I found myself bored during freshman year and I thought that it was because CNU wasn’t “fun” or “exciting”. In reality, it was because I was sitting in my room watching Netflix whenever I wasn’t doing schoolwork. Opportunities to get involved and make connections are everywhere at CNU, but they won’t come to your student on their own. Encourage your student to branch out and get involved with something they enjoy.” - Hayden C.

“March is when the madness begins! This is when your student will pick where they want to live for the following year and what classes they will take. Encourage them to plan ahead and try to organize these things in advance so when the time comes, they won’t be as stressed about the situation. If still undecided, encourage them to take classes outside of their comfort zone, you never know what you will find interesting.” - Nicole K.

30 FINAL EXAMS If your students is feeling stressed or overwhelmed, encourage them to seek out whatever help they may need, such as that of Counseling Services, the Center for Academic Success or office hours with their professors. Resource: Office of the Registrar

Student Life:

The Office of the Registrar handles everything related to maintaining a student’s academic and education record. This includes academic transcripts, grade reports, progression toward degree requirements, course registration, interpreting the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, and evaluating and awarding credit. If students have questions about credits they’ve taken at CNU and their remaining degree requirements, they can work with their faculty core advisers and the university registrar to have all of their needs met.

May is our favorite time of year to celebrate our Captains for Life! Senior Week offers events from a beach day, fun run and comedic brunch to a champagne toast at the president’s house and Candlelight Ceremony. The week concludes with commencement. We look forward to seeing all our parents and families join in as we celebrate the achievements of our Captains!

“Your student will be getting back their final grades from the year. If they did not do so well, revisit their strategies and plans for improvement next year. Be sure they have taken advantage of all of the on-campus resources that are meant to help your student succeed here! For example, visiting a professor’s office hours or going to the Center for Academic Success are great resources for students to be proactive in their success with their studies.” - Duncan O.

2020 Resource: Campus Safety

JUNE

The University Police Department is a full-time, professionally trained police department responsible for the safety and welfare of the university community. They are committed to providing a safe and secure environment on campus, enforcing all state laws and university regulations, and preventing, detecting and investigating any criminal activity on campus. Our officers have the same authority and obligation as other state and municipal police with jurisdiction that includes all university-owned, leased and controlled property and the adjacent streets and sidewalks. We also maintain a mutual aid agreement with the Newport News Police Department. Christopher Newport is designated a Crime Prevention Campus by the Virginia Criminal Justice Services Board. To attain this certification, a college or university must detail crime prevention goals, programs and accomplishments. Campus Police (757) 594-7777 cnupd@cnu.edu

2020 Student Life: While most students are back home, our Orientation Leaders are gearing up to welcome our next group of future Captains! Setting Sail and the President’s Leadership Program’s Leadership Adventure are in full swing over the last two weeks of June.

“ There was so much to do on campus that I started to get bored back home. It was great to take some time to re-explore my hometown and learn to appreciate it more. It was also nice to visit other friends in their hometowns too! I also took this time to organize my room back home, clean out and refresh for the following year.” - Destiny C.

Resource: Parking and Transportation Services

Student Life:

Parking Services manages all of CNU’s parking locations and decal distribution. During the summer, students must think about buying their parking decal for the next academic year. There are different decals for different parking locations, which can depend on a student’s residence hall or commuter status. Students can order parking decals online through CNU Connect or at the Parking and Transportation Services office, located in the Ferguson Parking Deck. By ordering early, their decal can be sent home and ready to go before arriving back on campus.

Among the students on campus over the summer are those participating in the Summer Scholars Program. This is a community of scholars that promotes the collaborative nature of research, champions communication across disciplines and fosters discovery. Through this eight-week, in-residence experience, participants gain research and communication skills, learn more about the University’s scholarly resources, and become better problem solvers.

CUES FROM A CAPTAIN

“Come July I starting missing my friends from school and getting ready for the next year. It was nice when my family schedule some quality time this month to take advantage of being all together. Even thought I was ready to go back to school, I knew I would miss my family again once I did.” - Kayla D.
