WHAT A WEEK!
Last week, South Florida was hit with a series of heavy rains, causing flooding and flight cancellations at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The flooding also caused gas shortages and road closures in several cities in Broward County.
The heavy rains began on Monday, April 10, and continued throughout the week, with some areas experiencing up to six inches of rainfall As a result, many streets and highways were flooded, making travel difficult for residents and visitors alike In some cases, cars were seen driving through water that was waist-deep or higher
The flooding also had a significant impact on air travel, with many flights being delayed or cancelled at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Passengers were advised to check with their airlines for the latest information on flight cancellations and delays Some airlines even waived fees for passengers who wanted to change their travel plans
In addition to flight cancellations and travel disruptions, the flooding also caused gas shortages in several cities in Broward County
Many gas stations were unable to receive deliveries of gasoline due to flooded roads and highways, leaving some motorists stranded and unable to find fuel for their vehicles
There were long lines Friday at gas stations throughout Broward County Several pumps were seen covered up and deemed out of order
Maximo Alvarez, the president of Sunshine Gasoline Distributors — one of the largest gasoline distributors in South Florida — confirmed distribution was disrupted, but there should not be issues within the next 24 hours Gas prices should also not be affected
The cities of Coral Springs and Tamarac were particularly hard hit

Regional symposium urged to develop concrete measures to deal with crime
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley on Monday called for concrete recommendations to be adopted at the end of a two-day regional symposium on violence that Caribbean Community (Caricom) leaders regard as a public health issue
“I really believe we would do ourselves an injustice,” she said if the delegates left the gathering without adopting decisions to be implemented across the region
“We need the Caricom arrest warrant, we need to have the exchange and rotation of judges we need to have an enlargement of the jurisdiction of magistrates, we need cooperation on forensics and we need to deconstruct all the rules in our police service and reconstruct them,” Motley told a panel discussion of regional leaders
Mottley, an attorney, also noted that many years ago “people did not get bail for murder
“Now when I look at the stats, not just out of the Bahamas, Barbados and all through the region, the people who are causing the greatest problems are charged with two, three, four murders Something is fundamentally wrong,” she said
“So I ask myself two basic questions How are we going to deconstruct and reconstruct to
meet the reality of this jurisprudential development that is undermining the rule of law in our countries and we are going to have to find ways of cooperating from the level of the police to the level of the courts, but in particular, forensics
“If we can get people to court within nine to 12 months, you have a good chance of a person not being given bail Beyond 12 months, any number can start to play,” Mottley said, questioning why countries have been establishing forensic labs individually
She also questioned why the region is not involved in “proactive prosecutions rather than
Earthquakes rattles Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, Antigua
Last Saturday afternoon, on April 15th, an earthquake estimated to be between a 5 1 and 5 4 magnitude rattled Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and the United States Minor Outlying Islands
The earthquake is said to have been located 55 kilometers from Kingston, Jamaica, in the Caribbean Sea The effects of the earthquake are reported as
reactive prosecutions
”
Earlier, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said that the region as a collective group must agree that greater resources must be placed on international security in the police services “into our ability to gather intelligence, interdict and prosecute ”
“But we must also consolidate our efforts to lobby, particularly the United States, to assist us as we have assisted them in the war on drugs They must assist us in the war on guns,” Holness said
“There seems to be no interest in stopping
minor, with no major damage caused Then on the night of Sunday, April 16th, a magnitude 3 5 earthquake was reported south of Antigua and Barbuda The UWI Seismic Research Center (UWI SRC) reported that the earthquake occurred around 11:56 pm (local time) at a depth of 16 km
the other part of the trade, which are the guns
The guns fuel crime, they are an accelerant, they are needed to protect drugs that are transshipped to our borders They are then turned to deal with other forms of criminal activity ”
Holness said in the case of Jamaica, the weapon of choice is no longer the Russian made AK-47, but the AR-15 and the Glock, which are guns manufactured in North America
“So, collectively as the leaders of Caricom, we must raise our voice on this We must appeal to our friends in the North to increase their efforts to prevent the flow of guns into the region,” Holness said
“We must also increase, in a consummate way, our own spending on securing our ports, airports and our points of entry and increase our ability to detect the entry of illegal weapons and we must also change our laws so that they align with the new and sophisticated crimes that are being committed and the flow of weapons into our country ”
Holness said the issue of crime and violence also has to be treated from the public health standpoint noting that Jamaica has established a national commission on the prevention of crime

United States, Cuba resume migration talks

“This bilateral discussion reflects a commitment by both countries to regularly review the implementation of the Accords,” said the State Department in a statement
It said the Department of Homeland Security’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere David Cloe led the US interagency delegation, and Cuba’s Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio led the Cuban delegation
“These migration talks provide an opportunity for discussions on mutual implementation of the Migration Accords, comprising a series of bilateral agreements between the United States and Cuba completed in 1984, 1994, 1995 and 2017,” the State Department said
“The US delegation highlighted areas of successful cooperation on migration, while also identifying issues that have been obstacles to fulfilling the goals of the Accords,” it added “Engaging in these talks underscores our commitment to pursuing constructive discussions with Cuba where appropriate to advance US interests
“Ensuring safe, orderly, humane and regular migration between Cuba and the United States remains a mutual interest of both countries, and is consistent with US interests in fostering family reunification and promoting greater respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba,” the State Department continued

“The Government of Guyana continues to be concerned with the senseless deaths on our roadways which, many times, are attributable to drunken driving ”

Evil makes religion seem hypocritical

Mosque to celebrate a prophet and a book of peace
Such raw, blatant hypocrisy
What is the role and purpose of these religions, if what they really do is contribute to the camouflage of evil with grandiose attempts of worship and traditional rites? Why is evil escalating despite the presence of so many churches, mosques, and synagogues, and the efforts of the men and women who lead and guide members of these churches, mosques, and synagogues?

The week beginning April 2 to April 9 was a very interesting week for the world’s major religions Not only was it Holy week for Christians commemorating and celebrating the events leading to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, but during the week Jews celebrated Passover, and Muslims continued worshipping in the holy commemoration of Ramadan

The three religions encompass millions of people across the world seeking to give homage the same God Christians flock to church on Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection from the dead of God’s son Jesus, Jews celebrate God’s deliverance from bondage in Egypt, and Muslims celebrate the Quran and its revelation to the Prophet Muhammed
In the US, as in other countries where Christianity is the dominant religion, millions of worshipers who usually ignore attending churches, crowd churches nationwide at Easter The message of the resurrection of a Messiah who was killed to redeem sinners seems to resonate strongly throughout the Christian faith
With so many people turning to passionately worship God and commemorate special events on their religious calendars, one would assume this passion to serve and follow God – a god of peace, compassion, and righteousness –
that Earth would be mostly a peaceful, compassionate, and righteous place
But, to the contrary, the world is consumed with abundant evil, the likes of which have not been seen before Jews in Israel continue to aggressively resist their Palestinian neighbors’ demands for more territory to settle, resulting in an evil-filled relationship that has cost many lives
The Middle East, home to the majority of the world’s Muslim population, and other Muslimbased countries like Afghanistan, is consistently embroiled in evil internal and external violence and stubbornly marginalizes women of all ages to varieties of such evil
Among Christians in America, violent crime has stepped up several notches in levels of evil And, in addition to violent crime, the country daily displays unusual incidents of evil brought about by
political division, the dichotomy between poverty and wealth, the treatment meted out to immigrants trying to enter the country, and the persistent escalation of blatant racial discrimination
Ironically, even during the holy solemnization of Good Friday, the holiest day of the Christian calendar, the evil of racism was stark as black legislators in the state of Tennessee were robbed of their election to public office, because they protested the evil killing of children in their state, while a white legislator who also participated in the same protest was retained in her position
Last week, Christians who harbor some form of evil within their hearts flocked to churches during Easter to celebrate and worship the risen Jesus Christ; Jews flock to synagogues to thank God for their historical deliverance; and Muslims flock to
Has evil become a dominant religion? Has evil become more dominant, and more appealing than the teachings of the various religious prophets, the Bible, the Quran, and the Torah? Is mankind more occupied with praying to God for material possessions, than for peace, love, justice, and righteousness?
There are few if any, easy answers to these questions This creates a serious conundrum as each day evil seems to surpass attempts at righteousness But there must be an answer! For evil to be suppressed the world must have a massive spiritual awakening Does the solution lie in existing religions? Is it possible for there to be a real collaboration of religions to eradicate evil globally?
Why not attempt such a collaboration to fight evil? For the world religions to continue in their present, seeming anemic role; for worshippers to make a meaningless show of worship is sheer hypocrisy, evil must be destroyed The question is, what, if anything, can religion do against this powerful force of evil? Women’s World Cup trophy gets quick, guarded visit in Haiti
By AP News
The FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy got a whirlwind visit to Haiti, but instead of being feted with a parade like in other countries it was only displayed during a small ceremony because of the country’s unrelenting violence
Meant to inspire future female football talent, the trophy was surrounded by Haitian authorities, mostly men and a handful of women, including the goalkeeper of the national football team and the president of the women ’ s soccer federation, Monique André
The trophy has special significance in Haiti now because its women ’ s team qualified in February for the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals for the first time in the country’s history
The team won its historic match a week after a court overturned a lifetime ban against former Haitian football federation president Yves Jean-Bart over allegations that he sexually abused female players, including minors FIFA has appealed the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport
Goalkeeper Kerly Théus, who plays for FC Miami, was the only member of the national team at the ceremony “I have no words to express how happy I am It is a big thing that we achieved and we plan to move forward,” she said
The trophy and an accompanying delegation were escorted by police through a back gate of Haiti’s international airport to a
nearby hotel for its presentation It was a necessary safety measure in a city where over 60 per cent of its areas are dominated by violent gangs, according to police
The 19-inch (47-centimetre) trophy is one that Milan PierreJerome, a member of Haiti’s women ’ s football team, wants to win. She was born in Florida and is a student at George Mason University in Virginia Her grandfather was Haitian, and her father played for Haiti’s football team
“My dad was a pro, so ever since I was out of the womb, it was like, ‘You gotta play football,’” she said with a laugh during a recent phone interview with the Associated Press
She was 14 when she first flew to Haiti for a two-week trial A month later, she got called back and participated in her first Haitian tournament at 15
Pierre-Jerome recalled the day the national team won its way into the World Cup tournament with a 2-1 victory over Chile in February: “It was so emotional I just remember crying, crying, crying This isn’t something you can do every day, qualifying for a World Cup ”
She celebrated by calling her father, who was unable to help Haiti qualify for the men ’ s World Cup in 1994
“I did this for you!” she recalled telling him. “He apparently ran outside the house and down the street ”
The team’s win sparked jubilation across Haiti at a time when the country is facing gang violence not seen in decades coupled with deepening poverty, widespread starvation and political instability
So far this year, gangs have killed more than 530 people and kidnapped more than 270 others, with worsening violence forcing at least 160,000 people to flee their homes
Given the situation, the win in February was a big moment, said Danielle Étienne, a member of Haiti’s football team and a student at Fordham University in New York
“It takes away from all the negative things going on right now,” she said in a recent phone interview. “It kind of brings a little light ”
Haiti’s Prime Minister ready to mobilize military
On Friday, April 14th, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry signaled that he wants to mobilize Haiti’s military to help the National Police fight the country’s increasingly powerful gangs Henry said during an appearance at the Haitian Armed Forces headquarters that he intends to mobilize all of the country’s security forces in the fight against gang violence His comments come as Haiti and some U N officials continue to press the international community to deploy foreign troops to help
quell the widespread violence
“What we are living today is not a joke,” Henry said Jean Robenson Servilius, who works in the press office for Haiti’s Defense Ministry, confirmed that officials are working on plans to activate the military He said that the Armed Forces currently have some 2,000 soldiers and that more are being recruited, adding that they have been trained by experts in Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia
Haiti’s military was disbanded in 1995 after
it participated in multiple coups and was accused of other political interference The Armed Forces were reinstated by assassinated President Jovenel Moïse in 2017 after the U N ended its peacekeeping operation in Haiti
Since then, it has played a limited role, which includes providing protection to Haiti’s prime minister
It was not immediately clear when the military would be activated, how many soldiers would be called to duty, or what role they would play But Henry said their help was needed
Gangs control an estimated 60% of the capital of Port-au-Prince, and they have killed hundreds of people in recent months in their fight to control more territory in the aftermath of the July 2021 assassination of Moïse at his private home Tens of thousands of Haitians have been displaced by the ongoing violence, which U N officials say has reached levels not seen in decades

Royal Caribbean makes changes to passenger legal terms & COVID policies
ROYAL CARIBBEAN - The fine print associated with a Royal Caribbean cruise has been updated
Royal Caribbean informed passengers with a cruise booked that the cruise line has amended its Cruise Ticket Contract, which is the legal terms all passengers agree to when booking a cruise
“We’re making important changes to our legal terms and simplifying the process by which these terms – which are applicable to your cruise purchase and other activities, services, and products related to your cruise – are communicated to you and all our guests from around the world,” the cruise line stated in an email to guests
The changes went into effect on April 12, 2023 and will apply to sailings that depart on or after that date
The changes apply to the Cruise Ticket Contract, Booking Conditions, and Global Purchase Terms and Conditions Royal Caribbean highlighted three changes they believe are the most important
Primary Country of Residence
The cruise line says the Cruise Ticket Contract or Booking Conditions applicable to your cruise purchase are now determined by your Primary Country of Residence This means whichever country you live in primarily at the time of booking will be which contract applies to you Royal Caribbean will determine the primary country of residence based on what's indicated by you, your agent, or other representative at the time of booking the cruise or at online check-in
COVID-19 Policy
One change is there are now less days prior to a cruise beginning to have tested positive for Covid to qualify for a refund
Royal Caribbean changed the policy from 14 to 5 days prior to embarkation if a passenger tests positive for Covid, exhibits signs or symptoms of Covid, or has had close contact with a person confirmed or suspected as having Covid, Royal Caribbean may deny boarding
The two changes here are 14 to 5 days, and the word "will deny boarding" to " may deny boarding"
Unless the passenger failed to follow Royal Caribbean's Covid policies and procedures, any passenger denied boarding under these circumstances will be entitled to either a refund or a future cruise credit equal in value to the cruise fare passenger paid
UNDERSTANDING PROBATE
Cruise Cancellation or Deviation Due to COVID
The updated cruise contract removed verbiage under the "Cancellation, Deviation, Or Substitution By Carrier" section related to public health emergencies The phrase "as a result of a declaration of a public health emergency or government order" has been removed
Why the cruise contract is important
The cruise contract is an important legal document that you agree to when booking a cruise It encompasses protocols and policies related to guest conduct and expectations during a cruise Every cruise line includes this as part of the agreement you make when you book a cruise
Upon placing a deposit, Royal Caribbean adds a check box to indicate the guest has read through the Cruise Contract and agrees to everything inside
Probate is the legal process that takes place after a
person has passed away It involves the identification and distribution of the deceased person's assets and the settlement of their debts In Florida, probate can be a complicated and time-consuming process, but it is necessary to ensure that the deceased person's wishes are carried out and their assets are distributed according to the law
Most people do not think of probate until someone dies and they go to the bank to try to get money from an account, sell a home or automobile, or claim an insurance benefit
The Probate process is the bridge that one must cross in order to transfer what someone owned at death to the beneficiaries/heirs of their estate The person who died is called the decedent What the person owns at death is called the estate
Probate is necessary when someone dies and a home, financial account, and other real estate are titled solely in their name – meaning there are no joint owners or beneficiaries listed on the deed/title to the home, financial account, or insurance policy
The Florida probate process starts with the filing of a petition for administration with the local circuit court This petition is usually filed by the executor named in the deceased person's will or by a family member if there is no will Once the petition is filed, the court will appoint a personal representative who will be responsible for overseeing the probate process
The personal representative's first job is to identify and gather all of the deceased person's assets. This may involve reviewing financial statements, deeds, and other legal documents The personal representative must also notify all known creditors of the deceased person's death
and provide them with an opportunity to file a claim against the estate
Once all of the assets have been identified and all of the creditors have been notified, the personal representative must pay any outstanding debts and taxes owed by the estate This may involve selling assets to generate the necessary funds Once all debts and taxes have been paid, the remaining assets can be distributed to the beneficiaries named in the deceased person's will or according to the laws of intestacy if there is no will
In Florida, there are two types of probate administration: formal administration and summary administration Formal administration is required if the value of the estate is over $75,000 or if there are complex legal issues involved Summary administration is a simplified process that can be used if the value of the estate is less than $75,000 or if the deceased person has been dead for more than two years
The Florida probate process can take anywhere from several months to several years, depending on the complexity of the estate and any legal challenges that may arise It is important for the personal representative to seek the advice of an attorney experienced in probate law to ensure that the process is carried out correctly and efficiently
It is important not to pay debts owed by the decedent until you have consulted an attorney, because the decedent’s debts are payable only under certain conditions

The Advantages of Bankruptcy
By Attorney Caroly Pedersen
For families struggling with the overwhelming burden of debt, caught in an exhausting cycle of juggling bills, debts and mortgage payments, the financial pressures can be devastating. And to make matters worse, many older Floridians, ages 55 and older, who have worked hard all their lives, lose their jobs, only to discover that their age makes it difficult to find a new one But, just when all hope seems lost, bankruptcy may offer a positive solution!
In addition to providing individuals with financial freedom and the opportunity to begin their financial lives again with a clean slate, Chapter 7 Bankruptcy can also put families back on the path to building a solid financial future Finances that were once gobbled up by credit cards and other consumer debts, can be used to pay household and living expenses without stress, and as circumstances improve, money can be set aside as saving for educational expenses, emergencies, retirement and other necessities of life
Chapter 7 Bankruptcy has many advantages, but there are also many commonly held misconceptions as well The most common is that it is impossible to get credit or to buy a car or house for 7-10 years after filing for bankruptcy Nothing could be further from the truth Normal credit can be easily re-established within several years, including automobile and home mortgage loans, since a person is virtually debt-free Once the bankruptcy process is complete, many consumers find that credit scores have improved, since late payments, write-offs and delinquencies on the credit
Alternatives to Chapter 7
Debtors should be aware there are several alternatives to filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy For example, debtors who are engaged in business, including corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorships, may prefer to remain in business and avoid liquidation Such debtors should consider filing Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code Under Chapter 11, the debtor may seek an adjustment of debts, either by reducing the debt or by extending the time for repayment
Sole proprietorships may also be eligible for relief under Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code
report have all been discharged through the bankruptcy. Bad credit stays on an individual's credit report for 7 years, and a bankruptcy for 10
The truth is that for those who qualify, Bankruptcy may eliminate credit card, medical and other consumer debts and judgments, stop pending and threatened lawsuits, foreclosures, garnishments and harassing telephone calls and letters from debt collectors and provide a fresh financial start!
Factors in qualifying for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy include level of income and amount of assets Qualifying homes, retirement accounts and other important exemptions are generally not counted towards assets in Florida, allowing many consumers to keep what they own and complete the entire bankruptcy process in as little as 90 days So, when financial problems seem overwhelming, the good news is that the first step to solving debt problems may be the easiest one – finding out your options are taking control of your future
Also, individual debtors who have regular income may also seek an adjustment of debts under chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code An advantage of Chapter 13 is it provides individual debtors with an opportunity to save their homes from foreclosure by allowing them to "catch up " past due payments through a payment plan Moreover, the court may dismiss a Chapter 7 case filed by an individual whose debts are primarily consumer rather than business debts if the court finds that the granting of relief would be an abuse of Ch 7
If the debtor's "current monthly income" is more than the state median, the Bankruptcy Code requires application of a "means test" to determine whether the Chapter 7 filing is presumptively abusive Abuse is presumed if the debtor's aggregate current monthly income over 5 years, net of certain statutorily allowed expenses, is more than (i) $12,850, or (ii) 25 percent of the debtor's non-priority unsecured debt, as long as that amount is at least $7,700 The debtor may refute a presumption of abuse only by indicating special circumstances that justify additional expenses or adjustments of current monthly income Unless the debtor overcomes the presumption of abuse, the case will generally be converted to Chapter 13 (with the debtor's consent) or will be dismissed

Connecticut based, Jamaican special ed teacher talks stigma against autistic children
By Micaiah Morgan
April is recognized as Autism Awareness Month to increase understanding of the condition while supporting those affected by the disability Despite the annual observance, many children with autism frequently experience discrimination Furthermore, many of them, as well as their parents and caregivers, find it challenging to integrate into society due to the pervasive stigma associated with the disability
In light of this ongoing challenge, Jamaican-born, special education teacher, RoAnna Thomas, believes that many people are unaware of the wide range of disabilities and how they affect children
“Having autism doesn’t mean that there is something wrong, it just means that the individual’s brain thinks differently and that is okay With the right support in place, they can learn to thrive and live a full life,” she said
Thomas, who works with sixth graders in Connecticut, in the United States, spends time providing support for students who deal with mental, emotional, or physical disabilities
“I support my students by assessing their skills and determining their educational needs; adapting the general education curriculum to meet their needs; developing, implementing, and updating Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), assessing and tracking student progress, as well as collaborating with parents, general education teachers, administrators, and other service providers to provide continues on B3 – Stigma against autistic children

support and track progress for students, among other support,” she shared
She said that autism, which is a spectrum, has a wide range of signs and the severity of the symptoms varies greatly However, she noted that common signs tend to be difficulty with communication and social interactions, as well as obsessive and repetitive behaviors
“For example, many of my students engaged in stimming (repetitive) behaviors but for some, it would be pacing or running back and forth, hand flapping, echolalia (meaningless repetition of words), among other signs,” she said
In expressing her joy in working with special needs children, she said that autistic students are one of her favorite student groups because it challenges her to come up with innovative teaching strategies while providing support
“My sister is a general education teacher,
and she tells me all the time that she couldn’t do what I do I always laugh but to be honest, I feel the same way about her work Special education has my heart There’s no better feeling than helping a student unlock and access the world around them You’re teaching them in a way that is unique to them and that caters to the way in which they understand and process information,” she said
While acknowledging that two of her biggest challenges are the unpredictability and the stigma that comes with working with students with disabilities, she is more concerned about parents who struggle with the reality of their child’s condition
“I’ve found that being a parent to a child with autism can be very challenging, especially if the child exhibits severe symptoms For many parents, they grieve the loss of a typicalfunctioning child Some also feel guilty and will blame themselves because they feel that they

might have caused the disability somehow Some of them pretend that their child does not have a disability and will often hide it from friends and family,” she shared
Thomas advises parents to love and cherish their children while giving them the support they require, despite the difficulties that come with raising children with disabilities like autism
“Embrace them proudly and wholeheartedly Early intervention is key so get help immediately Do not ignore what your child needs in hopes that their disability will magically disappear It will not, but you can teach them how to successfully live with it Tap into your resources If you don’t know where to go, start with your child’s pediatrician Lastly, breathe, be patient, and do your best At the end of the day, what your child needs is your love and unconditional support,” she further advised
She added that “not enough people understand what autism is,” which adds to the persistence of stigma and discrimination, making it crucial for society to be educated on the disability
“The more educated society becomes, the more open and accepting we will be towards those who not only have autism but those who have other disabilities as well Autism awareness helps us to know how to relate to and aid in supporting those with autism This will allow those with autism and their families to feel less isolated and more included in a world that tends to cater to those who are able-bodied and neurotypical ”
Thomas strongly believes that breaking the stigma surrounding autism will allow families to be more willing to get the services and support that they need for their children, which will enable those with autism to reach their full potential

JFF struggling to fund $100m Women’s World Cup budget, says President Ricketts
By CMC News
Michael Ricketts, president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), has bemoaned his governing body’s difficulty in adequately funding the preparation budget of $100 million for the Senior Reggae Girlz ahead of this summer ’ s FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand
The JFF boss used the occasion of the Government of Jamaica’s belated declaration of $20 million towards the program to plead his case for more support for the Girlz who have qualified for their second consecutive World Cup Finals appearance
On Monday Minister of Sports Olivia Grange announced that starting at the end of this month the Government of Jamaica will provide the Reggae Girlz with a monthly stipend towards their nutritional and training needs leading up to the World Cup Finals scheduled for July 20 through to August 20
She also peddled the idea that more support could be granted to the program, pending discussions with the leadership of the
governing JFF
“In regard to the support of the Government of Jamaica to the Reggae Girlz, we will be providing a monthly stipend for each member of the squad for their nutrition and other training needs, beginning the end of this month, and this will continue until the World Cup,” Grange announced during the FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy tour of the island at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel
“And of course, I am looking forward to meeting with the Jamaica Football Federation to see what else we can do Not making any commitments here, but we’ll talk about it because we certainly want to make sure that the Reggae Girlz have the best chance ever to come home with the trophy,” Grange continued
The Reggae Girlz, coached by Lorne Donaldson, are drawn in Group F and will oppose France, Brazil and Panama in the preliminary phase and for Ricketts, the minister’s announcement was a step in the right direction, though there remains much ground to be covered
“It will certainly help because we do have a
far way to go and I am sure that she [Grange] has unofficially committed to giving us some more support, so I will talk to the minister and see what further support she has for us,” Ricketts told the media
“But we are looking forward It is going to be a struggle but we are very optimistic because we have been getting some new sponsors on
board and certainly by the time July 20 comes around, we should be in a better position But as it is now, we are trying desperately to get sponsors on board and so far it has been working out ”
In plotting the way forward, Ricketts noted that the JFF is in the process of finalizing camps in June and July, with the June camp being used to accommodate two games which will twin as send-off occasions
“We have had discussions with entities overseas, and we have a camp planned just before we go over to Australia We have almost finalized those arrangements and most of that has been sponsored, so that certainly would have helped us in a huge way,” Ricketts offered
“We also want to have two games here in the June window and we are far advanced in those discussions So we are excited at the prospects, things are looking up and we must acknowledge our sponsors, especially the Marley Foundation Cedella [Marley] has been good to us and of course, the minister and our corporate sponsors So good times ahead and we are very optimistic,” he said
