independence Jamaica lies in the area of sports, especially over the past two decades

In earlier years, Jamaica was accustomed to occasional brilliant individual achievements by few athletes in track and field events at various Olympic meets However, more and more Jamaican athletes have impressed in recent years Today, Jamaica is among the strongest countries in sprint events at international track and field meets, including the Olympics

and even had to resort to its own fundraising efforts to make it to the tournament But, both the Jamaica Football Federation and the minister responsible for sports, countered the criticism indicating the team was given financial support

trained at these clubs This is an area with tremendous potential for making Jamaica a hub for training of international track and field athletes, especially in sprint events

The annual Boys and Girls Championships have gained international recognition as one of, if not, the most outstanding such high school sporting events, attracting more visitors each year ‘Champs’ can be the seed for Jamaica hosting an international annual high school championship similar to the Penn Relays

Furthermore, Jamaican sportsmen and women are excelling in other sports like soccer, netball, swimming, and even ice-hockey

Despite the impressive success of Jamaicans in international sport tournaments, the development of sports in Jamaica isn’t administered by a dedicated ministry of sports Rather, the sports ministry is attached to other ministries Currently, under the administration of Jamaica’s government, the sports ministerial portfolio is included in the super-ministry of Sports, Culture, Entertainment, and Gender

Affairs In former administrations the sports portfolio was attached to the Ministry of Education or other ministries

Although the incumbent Minister of Sports, Culture, Entertainment and Gender Affairs isn’t being criticized for her handling of the sports portfolio, sports in Jamaica have developed to such an extent it now requires a dedicated Ministry of Sports, without the sports minister bogged down with other portfolio responsibilities

In the wake of Jamaica’s women soccer team, the Reggae Girlz, outstanding achievements at the FIFA Women World Cup in New Zealand/Australia, controversy evolved regarding Jamaica’s official support for the team. There’s popular opinion the team received very little financial and other support from the Jamaican private and public sectors,

If indeed the team didn’t get the appropriate financial support it needed to compete at the foremost international tournament in women ’ s soccer, it would be a drastic disappointment There has also been past criticism from other Jamaican teams traveling to other international tournaments, about being underfunded and adversely affected

Many years ago, before tourism became the vast revenue earner it now is in the Jamaican economy, the tourism portfolio was also attached to other ministries, like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism. Back then, much of Jamaica’s tourism development was embodied in the Jamaica Tourist Board But, when tourism began to expand, a dedicated Ministry of Tourism was created to effectively administer the tourism industry

Similarly, it’s time for creating a separate, dedicated Ministry of Sports, so structured to administer the operators of the various sports’ organizations administering sports in Jamaica; set a national sports policy including the transition of Jamaican youth athletes from high school sports to the professional level; monitor fees for professional athletes; appropriate budgets for participation of teams at international events; develop and manage Jamaica’s sports infrastructure, including playing fields, and practicing facilities, etc

But, most importantly, the Ministry of Sports should be responsible for the growth of the commercial aspect of Jamaican sports Based on the success of several Jamaican track and field clubs responsible for training athletes for international tournaments, overseas athletes now regularly visit Jamaica to be

There are several other events which Jamaica could host to attract international participation, and persistently develop its athletes to participate The achievements of Jamaican sports men and women is highlighting Brand Jamaica Every effort, every support, must be given to these young athletes to excel in their chosen sports. The brighter Brand Jamaica shines in sports, the easier it will be to market the commercial aspect of Jamaican sports. Significant revenue can be generated to pay Jamaican athletes’ decent fees, ensure they have appropriate diet and training facilities to compete, competent and talented coaches are hired, and youth all over the country have a serious option to explore as their career path

The full potential of development of sports in Jamaica is yet to be realized Like tourism, sports in Jamaica need to be harnessed under a dedicated Ministry of Sports This can only benefit the country Jamaica has beaches, great hotels, gifted entertainers, and some of the best sportsmen and women It’s time to develop Jamaica’s sport sector to its full potential

Haiti American nurse and daughter freed following abduction in Haiti

Alix Dorsainvil, an American nurse, and her daughter were released on Wednesday after nearly two weeks of captivity in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as reported by the aid organization El Roi Haiti

Founded by Dorsainvil’s spouse, the Christian group El Roi Haiti has implored the public to respect the privacy of the Dorsainvil family, emphasizing their need to process and heal after this harrowing event

Expressing immense joy and gratitude, the group confirmed their safe return However, specifics about the release, including potential ransom payments, remain undisclosed

Reacting to the news of their freedom, the US State Department emphasized the

importance of ensuring the safety and security of American citizens abroad

They lauded both their Haitian counterparts and US interagency teams for playing pivotal roles in ensuring the duo’s release

According to media reports, armed men had abducted the nurse, originally from New Hampshire, and her daughter last month from a clinic situated in a region of Port-au-Prince dominated by gangs

Dorsainvil was an active member of the community, dedicating her time and expertise to offer essential services, including medical care and education, to some of Haiti’s most underserved populations through El Roi Haiti

Haiti’s gang violence: Rights group pleads for swift international intervention

Human Rights Watch has sounded the alarm on Monday over escalating gang violence in Haiti, pressing the international community for swift intervention

The plea arrives as the UN Security Council deliberates Haiti’s plea, made in October, for an immediate international armed force deployment in response to the rising violence

Concerns are deepening as the Security Council’s response remains pending

Ida Sawyer, the group ’ s crisis and conflict director said that delays could lead to more Haitians becoming victims of violence, including acts of murder, rape, and abduction

Sawyer also pointed out that more people will suffer without enough to eat

Earlier in the month, the US proposed a UN Security Council resolution to empower Kenya in spearheading a multinational police force targeting Haitian gangs Nevertheless,

details on when such a resolution would be implemented remain uncertain

“The main message we want to get across is that Haitian people need support now,” Sawyer said “We heard again and again that the situation is worse now in Haiti than it’s been at any time people can remember ”

Human Rights Watch paints a grim picture, suggesting that gangs currently have the upper hand in the capital, Port-au-Prince, controlling an estimated 80 percent of the city

The strained state of Haiti’s police force

The island nation’s police force, numbering roughly 10,000 for a population exceeding 11 million, has been hard-pressed to maintain order Between January and June, the violence claimed the lives of over 30 officers, and a staggering 400 police facilities have been rendered non-operational due to criminal onslaughts

Reports are that approximately 5 2 million Haitians now require aid, marking a 20 percent rise from the previous year Sawyer also called for strict oversight of Kenyan police if they are deployed

Public outcry and protests

Demonstrators have voiced their dissatisfaction with the current administration, decrying the rise in violence and worsening

economic conditions Many echo the sentiment of longing for the arrival of international forces as a potential reprieve from the chaos

Human Rights Watch further emphasized the necessity for countries like the US, Canada, and France to back the formation of an interim Haitian administration Haiti has been mired in uncertainty since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021

The advocacy group also underscored the historic role of countries like France and the US in Haiti’s struggles, advocating for a reparation process steered by Haitians

Haiti’s past is marked by its 1804 declaration as the world’s inaugural Black republic, followed by a burdensome financial obligation to France as compensation for lost colonial assets

This debt, adjusted to 90 million gold coins, was settled in 1947 but has had lasting implications on the nation’s economic health

Section 10 plea denied

Judge denies plea to halt Florida law that criminalizes transporting illegal migrants

Civil rights organizations reached out to a federal judge on Tuesday, seeking a halt to the enforcement of a particular section of Florida’s new state immigration law

This section, known as Section 10, criminalizes the act of transporting someone who has unlawfully entered the United States

Reports are that the request was promptly denied by the jurist due to a technicality

The groups claim that Section 10 makes it unsafe for individuals to attend medical appointments, engage with family members, or travel to work The complaint was part of a July lawsuit that challenges the legality of the law

Judge rejects civil rights groups’ request.

Section 10, the groups contend, disrupts the daily lives of many of the individual Plaintiffs

The motion sought a temporary injunction to halt enforcement, but the request was immediately denied by US District Judge Roy Altman

He cited a technicality, stating that Governor Ron DeSantis and other defendants, including prosecutors from across Florida, had not been properly notified about the motion

However, the judge indicated that the civil rights groups could resubmit the request

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami, asserts that Florida’s law is unconstitutional

The suit argues that federal law takes prece-

dence over state law regarding immigration and that the Florida law disregards due process rights and is ambiguously written

How section 10 affects

Floridians

The motion made on Tuesday included examples of the potentially negative impacts of the law

It highlighted instances such as a woman who could be arrested for driving her grandson, who is seeking immigration relief, and a Catholic deacon who provides transportation for individuals to immigration-related appointments

The law has been sharply criticized by some, including legal experts at the ACLU

Immigrants’ Rights Project, who describe it as an act of cruelty, threatening ordinary Floridians with jail time “for doing the most ordinary things, like visiting family, going to work and driving kids to soccer games ”

K1 Fiancé Visa: Everything you need to know

If you ’ ve tied the knot with a US citizen or have plans to do so you need to be aware of the ways it can work to your advantage immigration-wise

Let’s dispel any assumptions: marriage to an American doesn’t grant an automatic ticket to US immigration rights It is the first step of a multi-step process and requires a fiancé visa

What is a US fiancé Visa?

The US fiancé visa, officially known as the K-1 visa, is a nonimmigrant visa that allows the fiancé of a US citizen to enter the United States for up to 90 days to get married If you are a US citizen who wants to bring your foreign fiancé(e) to the United States to get married, you will need to file a Form I-129F, Petition For Alien Fiancé(e)

How the fiancé visa works

You and your fiancé must intend to marry each other within 90 days of your fiancé entering the US as a K-1 nonimmigrant Your marriage must be valid, meaning both you and your fiancé have a bona fide intent to establish a life together and the marriage is not for the sole purpose of obtaining an immigration benefit To establish this an immigration officer will conduct an exhaustive background test If your fiancé(e) marries you within 90 days of being admitted to the United States as a K-1 nonimmigrant, they may apply for lawful permanent resident status in the United States (a Green Card)

Steps to applying for a fiancé visa

Be prepared for a long journey with lots of paperwork and legal hoops to jump through For those who are not organized or mindful in

filling out forms or assembling documents consider consulting a lawyer This advice does not replace the assistance of a trained lawyer by any means

2. USCIS will review your case

documents such as proof of their relationship with the US citizen, police records, previous marriages (if applicable) and proof of a medical examination If the consular officer finds that the applicant is eligible for a K-1 visa, they will issue it Please be aware that admitted drug use may result in an additional one year ban Requiring mandatory one year random drug screenings But do not lie, as that may result in a permanent ban Honesty is the best policy with immigration interviews

5.

Entering the United States on a K1 Visa

Once the K-1 visa is issued, the fiancé(e) has up to 6 months to enter the United States Upon arrival, they must marry their US citizen fiancé(e) within 90 days or leave the country

6.

Adjustment of status

1. Filing form I-129F

(Petition

for alien fiancé)

The first step in the K-1 visa process is for the US citizen to file a Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e), with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)2 This form is used to establish that there is a valid relationship between the US citizen and their foreign fiancé(e) and that they intend to get married within 90 days of the fiancé(e) entering the United States as a K-1 nonimmigrant. You will need to pay the relevant fees upon filing

After Form I-129F is filed, USCIS will review it and may request additional documentation or deny the application If the petition is approved, it will be sent to the National Visa Center (NVC) for processing

3. NVC processing

The NVC will process the approved petition and forward it to the US embassy or consulate in the fiancé(e)’s country The fiancé(e) will then be notified to apply for a K-1 visa

4. Visa interview

The fiancé(e) must attend a visa interview at the US embassy or consulate in their country During this interview, they will need to provide

After getting married, the foreign spouse can apply for an adjustment of status to become a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) It’s an exhaustive process and according to the USCIS, the average wait time is around 14 5 months Immigration is a hot-button topic in the States that divides opinions across party lines Additionally, the US has had a persistent issue with ‘mail-order brides (or husbands) ’ This refers to a person who lists themselves in catalogs or websites for marriage in hopes of securing a visa for a better life. It’s a long wait, but the upside is life-changing and can change the trajectory of entire families

Bahamas court grants bail to American accused of plotting her husband’s murder

A high court judge in the Bahamas approved a US$100,000 bail for an American woman, Lindsay Shiver, 36, of Thomasville, Georgia, who is accused of plotting to kill her husband

Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson presided over the hearing where Shiver, along with two Bahamian individuals, faced charges of conspiracy to commit murder, levied against them on June 28

In a concurrent move, the court issued a restraining order between the embattled couple

Notably, the court proceedings were attended by Lance Peterson, the chief of American Citizen Services at the US Embassy Conspiracy uncovered

It is believed by the prosecution that the

plan to kill Robert Shiver, Lindsay’s husband, was set to take place in Abaco on July 16

This plot reportedly came to light after authorities intercepted a mobile phone during a probe into an unrelated crime in Guana Cay Reports are that Robert initiated divorce proceedings, allegedly attributing his decision to an affair he believes Lindsay had with one of her co-conspirators

Shiver was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services after she was unable to post the cash bail of US$100,000 last Tuesday

Bail conditions

Her two co-accused, Terrance Bethel, 28, and Faron Newbold Jr, 29, posted their $20,000 cash bail Both have since surren-

dered their passports and will be fitted with monitoring devices

Shiver’s bail conditions dictate that she must report to a local police station three times weekly and adhere to a residential curfew, which restricts her movements from 8 pm to 6 am local time

Additionally, she has been mandated to maintain a distance of at least 100ft from her spouse

The court further informed Shiver that her travel document would remain under the purview of the US Embassy Should she intend to travel, she is to notify the court beforehand

According to Dr Terel Newton, medical cannabis possesses the potential to help relieve various pain issues, ranging from migraine headaches to spinal cord injuries and everything in-between As the medical director of Total Pain Relief in Jacksonville, Dr Newton focuses on designing holistic care plans for individuals experiencing acute and chronic pain He also serves as the Florida medical director for Trulieve, the largest licensed operator of medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida

So, when it comes to pain management, he is well versed in conventional and alternative treatments Medical cannabis, Dr Newton explains, holds a distinct advantage over pharmaceutical drugs often prescribed to relieve pain and related side effects

“The great thing about cannabis is you can coordinate what I call 'monopharmacy ' With traditional medicine, there's polypharmacy So, it's one medicine for your pain, one medicine for your sleep, one medicine for your anxiety But you can have cannabis treat all of those things,” he says

What further separates cannabis from traditional pain medications like opioids is “ you can't overdose on it,” he adds “It's not going to suppress your breathing whereas, with muscle relaxants, they can suppress your breathing Anti-inflammatories can cause ulcerations in your stomach, and we don't see that with CBD, THC, or any cannabinoid-based medicines If you take a sleep aid and you drink alcohol, you can overdose on that, but with cannabis, you won't overdose ”

Dr Newton says there also is a psychological benefit to using medical cannabis instead of opiates for pain treatment

Clinical nutritionist Abbey Folsom shares Dr Newton's preference to low-THC cannabis over powerful and potentially addictive pharmaceuticals in pain management But she

says a healthy diet plays a big part in relieving inflammation, which is the most common source of pain

“The Western diet is notoriously high in n-6 fatty acids, so we want to focus on omega-3 or n-3 fatty acids, which the Mediterranean diet is high in I would actually recommend the Mediterranean diet, a diet high in n-3 omega fatty acids to support the endocannabinoid system,” says Ms Folsom, whose practice includes treating chronic disease

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes eating plant-based foods, poultry instead of red meats, whole grains, fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and cooking with extra virgin olive oil It eschews consuming processed foods, sweets, sugary drinks and butter

Dr Newton and Ms Folsom agree that combating chronic pain takes a multiprong attack strategy Medication alone likely won't get the job done Physical therapy and activity, weight loss, and healthy nutrition should be considered, too

Meet the head of Visit Lauderdale who champions inclusion & diversity

Stacy Ritter connects from a hotel She’s on her way to the first LGBTQ+ conference in Florida “We’re gold sponsors,” she beamed

Stacy Ritter is the current President and CEO of Visit Lauderdale, an organization that champions the South Florida tourism industry The state laws passed in recent months targeting women ’ s reproductive rights, trans health care, immigration, and the ease with which immigrants can access health care and employment has made her job exponentially harder

“It’s sad that a tourism professional has to talk about the political environment in a state where tourism is the no 1 industry,” Ritter lamented

“The tourism [industry] is filled with people from other countries Immigrants who came to this country to find a better opportunity for themselves and their family who discovered

hospitality as a very inclusive and welcoming industry Anywhere up and down the chain you ’ re going to you find someone who wasn’t born in the States,” she explained, painting a picture of what it’s like on the ground in the tourism industry “Laws that pass that inhabit people’s ability to work those people are going to go elsewhere ”

Ritter and her family moved to Broward County 50 years ago She is the perfect historian to chart how the region has evolved in half a century, as she was, at times, directly involved in shaping that history Ritter served as a State Representative for Florida, 10 years as Broward County Commissioner, and a year as County Mayor

Over that time frame, she’s watched Broward County go from being predominantly white, straight, cis, and male to being one of the most diverse areas in the country “[Broward] is

a majority-minority county,” she explains, before reeling off statistics With around 2 million residents from over 170 nations and speaking over 100 languages, Broward is a microcosm of the planet

Championing diversity and inclusion

“If you want to go somewhere where you only want to see people who look like you, don’t come here,” she states as a matter of fact The diversification of Broward was natural Ritter is careful not to draw parallels between her family moving from Washington to Florida and immigrants choosing to come to Broward

The appeal is universal, warm weather throughout the year and career opportunities to better provide for families and loved ones Diversification begets more diversification As more Bajans migrate to Broward they establish stores and communities that make the county more inviting to other Bajans This is replicated across many cultures in Broward “We’ve woven a beautiful tapestry full of multicultural fabric,” Ritter smiles

This is what’s at stake for Ritter She’s tried to distance herself from politics attributing a growing bitterness to the emergence of social media and how that feeds into misogynistic scrutiny where her appearance was dissected more than her politics in addition to a collapse in party relationships and decorum

“I wanted to do some positive things and talk about sunshine and beaches and happiness,” she started, “just when I thought I was out they pull me back in!”

Tackling challenges

It’s remarkable how easily she shifts back into politician cadence Over her mic, you could hear the subtle banging of the desk as she accentuated each talking point Her career is a microcosm of how interwoven Florida’s political climate is with daily life

Visitors come to Florida in the millions

According to Visit Florida, last year saw 137 4 million visitors from out of state Tourism contributed 101 9 billion USD to the Floridian economy and supported almost 2 million jobs When the legislature is hostile to immigrants and 2nd generation Americans, it is hostile to the entire state “America relies on the jobs immigrants do,” she explained “It’s an ugly truth [about the country] but it’s something we need to talk about ”

Hospitality is the most forward-facing industry but immigrants are the backbone of the state and have always been Other service jobs, nursing, and agriculture are significantly staffed by immigrant populations When those industries decline, everyone feels it

Beyond the economic considerations, Ritter believes that the legislature restricts the natural dissemination of experiences and culture “The history of this country is troubled and while we strive for that more perfect union we haven’t gotten there yet,” she explained

“I think talking about [systematic racism] is a positive thing Then people like me who are boomers and who are evolving to have conversations about things we wouldn’t have thought about 50 years ago Who is represented in marketing? Who is represented in television? Who do you see on the movie screen?”

Diversity is the key strength of the region

“[Visit Lauderdale] rebranded a year ago from Hello Sunny our new tagline is Everyone Under the Sun,” she grinned “I know how corny it sounds, but when we talk about America being a melting pot — Broward is that melting pot ” There’s a belief that travel leads to a happier life Exposure to new cultures and ways of thinking broadens horizons and fosters acceptance Travel is a privilege, more so after the quarantine and the paranoia brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic But living in Broward, even just visiting, means every few steps is like walking into another culture

“Everyone under the sun lives in Broward county We wanted to embrace the diversity and inclusivity of the destination Not shy away from,” she explained, laying it all out “Our mission is to bring people to [Broward] Our calling is to keep people employed ”
