‘Two is Better Than Too many’
Experts sound alarm about amaica's declining birth rate
The “Two is Better than Too Many” campaign, launched in the 1970s to promote family planning and encourage smaller family sizes, may have succeeded a little too well, as Jamaica now grapples with an alarming decline in its birth rate. Several health experts warn that this trend could jeopardize the island's aspirations for developed country status, calling for urgent action to address the socio-economic factors at play. Former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Reginald Budhan, has highlighted the serious implications of this issue

Parents of students in Broward County schools may need to prepare for significant changes in the next school year, as the district considers the closure or reconfiguration of nine schools as part of its “Redefining Our Schools” initiative This plan aims to alleviate financial pressures stemming from declining enrollment and shifting population dynamics within the county The Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) board has identified five schools as potential candidates for closure: Broward Estates Elementary in Lauderhill, North Fork
Elementary in Fort Lauderdale, Silver Lakes Elementary in Miramar, Silver Shores Elementary in Miramar, and Olsen Middle School in Dania Beach
Additionally, four schools may undergo reconfiguration altering grade levels these include Coconut Creek Elementary, Hollywood Central Elementary, Thurgood Marshall Elementary, and Pines Middle School Further discussions are planned for Bennett Elementary in Fort Lauderdale and Coral Cove Elementary in Miramar

BCPS Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer Valerie Wanza expressed a desire for thoughtful consideration of the community's input “Can we at least, for this first iteration this year, look at these schools, so we can give the time and attention, or the board can say, 'I

Meanwhile, school board member Dr Jeff Holness highlighted concerns that moving forward with closures could undermine the community's trust in the district “It appears to me to be premature I would like to see us get through the process of meeting with the community that we have already in place,” he said, suggesting that families should be engaged in the conversation before any decisions are made

Late Jamaican Journalist Ruschell Boone honored with scholarship for Caribbean students
In a heartfelt tribute to the late Emmy-winning journalist Ruschell Boone, the City University of New York (CUNY) and New York Attorney General Letitia James have announced the establishment of the Ruschell Boone Scholarship
This memorial fund aims to support West Indian students pursuing journalism degrees at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY or Baruch College, where Boone was an alumna
Born Ruschell West in Kingston, Jamaica, Boone immigrated to the Bronx at age 11 She faced bullying for her Jamaican accent and grew up in a blended family with her mother, Faithlyn Swaby, and stepfather, Duke Scott, as one of five children Boone earned a degree in accounting from CUNY's Baruch College, initially choosing this path to secure a stable future
However, her life took a significant turn during her senior year when she filled in for a missing guest on a college radio segment
Despite her academic counselor's discouragement, who told her it was “too late for her to change paths” and that she did not “fit the mold,” Boone decided to pursue her passion for journalism
Boone began her career in cable television news in 1998, first as a business news associate for CNBC and then as an associate producer and assignment editor for CNN She joined NY1 in 2002, where she became known for her thoughtful and informative reporting Her coverage of breaking stories, including the 2016 pressure-cooker bombing in Manhattan and the presidential election, garnered her several accolades, including multiple New York Emmy nominations. She became a general assignment reporter for NY1's "Live at Ten" newscast in 2018 and moved to the

anchor desk in 2021
Tragically, Boone began a medical leave from NY1 in 2022 to undergo treatment for pancreatic cancer Though she returned briefly to the anchor desk, she succumbed to medical complications on September 3, 2023, at the age of 48, leaving behind her husband and two
sons Her impact on journalism and mentorship was profound, inspiring many with her commitment to telling the stories of New York's diverse communities
In announcing the scholarship, Attorney General Letitia James praised Boone, stating, “Ruschell Boone was a brilliant journalist who touched the lives of everyone she encountered Her understanding of this city, its communities, and its people truly made her a New York City treasure ” She added, “With this scholarship, Ruschell's legacy lives on empowering a future generation of journalists to embody her authenticity and compassion ”
CUNY Board of Trustees Chairperson William C Thompson Jr expressed pride in memorializing Boone through the scholarship, saying, “We are proud to honor Ruschell Boone, continuing the principle she lived by, with this new scholarship in her name for CUNY students ” CUNY Chancellor Félix V Matos Rodríguez also highlighted Boone's commitment to mentorship, noting, “It is our honor to keep the memory of her dedication to mentorship alive with this scholarship ” With an initial $125,000 endowment pledged by the CUNY Board of Trustees and university supporters, the scholarship will help defray tuition and other college-related expenses for students, ensuring Boone's legacy of excellence in journalism continues The Ruschell Boone Scholarship is not just a financial aid program; it represents a commitment to preserving Boone's legacy Donations to the scholarship fund can be made payable to the City University of New York and will be managed through a separate account at the CUNY Endowment Fund Contributions requiring a 501(c)(3) designation can also be made to the Research Foundation of CUNY, where they will be placed in a dedicated account This initiative ensures that Boone's passion for journalism and her dedication to uplifting voices will continue to resonate for generations to come

Bail extended for 'Slickianna' accused murderer
Rushawn Patterson, the man charged with the October 2022 murder of popular Jamaican social media influencer Aneika 'Slickianna' Townsend, had his bail extended during his appearance in the St James Circuit Court on Monday
The case, which has been delayed due to outstanding post-mortem and DNA reports, is set to be mentioned again on October 18
Patterson, who suffers from haemophilia, a blood disorder, was initially granted bail on humanitarian grounds during a previous court sitting on July 16 He is represented by attorney Dionne Meyler
During Monday's proceedings, High Court Justice Bertram Morrison was informed that the prosecution is still awaiting critical reports to complete its case file The outstanding postmortem and DNA reports have delayed the setting of a trial date Justice Morrison extended the bail and scheduled the next hearing for October 18, allowing time for the case file to be finalized
Patterson was arrested on November 2, 2022, following a high-level police operation Townsend's body was found floating in the sea in Reading, St James, on October 21, 2022 A postmortem conducted on November 5 confirmed that Townsend had been strangled, with her death occurring between 11 p m on October 20 and 9 a m on October 21
According to police reports, Townsend had traveled from Kingston to Montego Bay on October 20 and was picked up by Patterson The two visited a restaurant in Hanover and a guest house in St James An argument reportedly broke out between them later that night, resulting in Patterson allegedly strangling Townsend and disposing of her body He was formally charged with her murder on November 11, 2022

Trinidad and Tobago could be removed from EU Blacklist
Trinidad and Tobago may soon be removed from the European Union's blacklist, according to Wade George, executive chairman of Ernst and Young (EY) Caribbean. The second round of the EU's peer review, which began on June 28, is expected to conclude with a site visit next month
Speaking at the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce's discussion on “Private Sector Opportunities in the New Special Economic Zone” on Thursday, George highlighted the country's progress “We have been on that list since 2017, and based on the most recent report in February, we remained there We haven't put on a framework to address the issue of common reporting standards,” George said during the event held at the Chamber's conference hall in Westmoorings
The EU blacklist, established to promote transparency and combat tax evasion, targets countries that do not meet specific antiBEPS (base erosion and profit shifting) measures Trinidad and Tobago's inclusion is due to the absence of a common reporting standards framework, a failure to be rated “largely compliant” by the Global Forum for information exchange, and the lack of legal frameworks for country-by-country reporting minimum standards
George pointed out that Trinidad and Tobago has not yet signed or ratified the Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters, which further hindered the country's compliance efforts The Free Zones Act, previously in place to manage economic activities, was repealed after the implementation of the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) regime in 2022 The Free Zones Act, George noted, had several challenges, including minimal reporting requirements, discretionary authority, and full tax exemptions without a sunset clause for termination
Despite these issues, George expressed optimism that Trinidad and Tobago may be removed from the blacklist by October, moving instead to the EU's “ grey list,” which carries less severe conse-
quences The potential penalties of remaining on the blacklist include reputational damage, loss of investment, restricted access to EU funding, and reduced economic growth
In an effort to enhance transparency, Finance Minister Colm Imbert recently presented a bill to amend several key acts, including the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Proceeds of Crime Act
Meanwhile, Kiran Maharaj, president of the T&T Chamber of Industry and Commerce, discussed the importance of the new SEZ regime, which is aimed at fostering economic growth “This is intended to be a tool for our economic development and growth, a place where businesses can innovate, expand and thrive without the usual bureaucratic and financial constraints,” Maharaj stated The SEZ regime, she added, has the potential to attract foreign direct investment and create new opportunities for partnerships and joint ventures
Caribbean leaders adopt “Pact for the Future” to address 21st-century challenges
Caribbean heads of government, alongside world leaders, have adopted a new "Pact for the Future" aimed at tackling some of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, including conflicts, climate change, and artificial intelligence The agreement, hailed as one of the most comprehensive international accords in years, reflects a unified commitment to addressing both new and longstanding global issues
Barbados' Prime Minister Mia Mottley, speaking during the summit, stressed the need for a shift in values and attitudes to meet these challenges "I believe that hope can be restored But I do recognize that we are at a turning point," Mottley said, emphasizing the importance of global collaboration She warned that those in power who resist change
are limiting policy flexibility and funding necessary to address critical issues "It is unconscionable for us not to recognize that unless we can provide the basics of food, water, shelter, electricity to all people on this earth, we cannot talk about being a successful generation in human civilization," she added
The "Pact for the Future," described by the United Nations as the result of years of inclusive discussions, outlines a vision for a global system capable of fulfilling its promises and adapting to the realities of today. The 42page agreement covers a wide range of issues, including peace, security, sustainable development, digital cooperation, human rights, and the transformation of global governance
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres,
Declining birth rate
Speaking at a recent forum hosted by the Hugh Wynter Institute for Reproductive Healthcare and Endoscopic Surgery at The University of the West Indies, Budhan stressed the need for immediate intervention to reverse the trend According to the Jamaica Population Health Status Report 2000–2022, which was tabled in Parliament earlier this year, the island's crude birth rate has dropped by 10 2 percentage points over the past two decades, falling below the replacement fertility rate of 2 1 needed to sustain the population, with the current rate standing at 1 9 "We had about 52,000 births last year, 21,000 migrations, and 20,000 deaths," Budhan noted "We have a serious problem If this continues, Jamaica will never achieve its Vision 2030 goal It will remain a dream, moving from 2030, to 2040, to 2050 " Budhan also criticized the effectiveness of

the 1970s campaign, describing it as “too effective” and advocating for a new approach that encourages larger families He underscored the importance of promoting strong family values to foster a sense of security for women in raising children
Other experts at the forum echoed Budhan's concerns Dr Garth McDonald, Senior Medical Officer at Victoria Jubilee Hospital, emphasized the socio-economic implications of a low birth rate and called for a focus not only on fertility but also on infertility issues “What about those women who want to have children but can't?” he asked, highlighting that economic instability also deters many women from starting families
Consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist Dr Loxley Christie revealed that 15% of couples experience fertility issues, urging for a more inclusive approach to infertility treatment that
during his opening remarks, highlighted the significance of the pact, alongside initiatives like the "Global Digital Compact" and the
considers both male and female factors “Up to 50% of the time, there may be a problem with the male,” Christie said, advocating for better integration of fertility discussions into government health campaigns
As Jamaica confronts these demographic challenges, Easton Williams, Senior Director of Social Policy, Planning, and Research at the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), warned that the country is at a critical juncture “Most of the countries in the Caribbean are now below replacement level The challenge is up to us,” Williams said, recommending a long-term strategic approach to tackle the issue
Professor Karen Carpenter from the Institute for Gender & Development Studies added that addressing the balance in childrearing responsibilities between men and women is also crucial “Both partners should contribute to the care of the child If we do not
"Declaration on Future Generations " These efforts, he said, present " new opportunities and unexplored possibilities" for addressing the challenges of tomorrow
The summit, which brought together more than 4,000 participants from heads of state, civil society, and international organizations, also featured action days preceding the formal event Over 7,000 people participated, with stakeholders making strong commitments and pledging $1.05 billion to advance digital inclusion globally
As world leaders move forward with this pact, the agreement sets the stage for more coordinated and responsive international cooperation to create a sustainable and equitable future
address how men have not moved forward while women have advanced themselves, we are not creating a balance,” she stated With the birth rate declining and the socioeconomic factors contributing to it, experts agree that Jamaica must take immediate action to address its population crisis or risk falling short of its development goals
Guyana advances toward establishing Oil and Gas data repository
The Guyanese government plans to establish an oil and gas data repository later this year, aimed at consolidating all historical and current petroleum data in a centralized local facility Currently, this data is stored in Houston, Texas, requiring companies to make special requests for access, which can hinder exploration efforts
Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat described the initiative as an ambitious project designed to promote job creation and generate revenue by keeping data within the country “Many oilproducing countries don’t have a local data repository even after several years We’re already working on ours after just four years,” he noted
Bharrat emphasized that this initiative is not just about the financial investment in setting up the repository; it also involves creating local jobs and selling the data to companies interested in exploration He highlighted the financial potential, explaining that during the last bidding round, companies paid a $2 million fee for data access While Guyana received a portion of that revenue, maintaining the repository locally would be far more profitable
“If we establish the repository incountry, we can capitalize on the demand for our data, as everyone wants information from the Guyana Basin,” said Minister Bharrat A petroleum data repository is a centralized system for storing and managing data related to the exploration, production, and distribution of oil and gas It will serve as a hub for various types of information, including seismic data, drilling records, and reservoir engineering details
Additionally, the government has reviewed eight expressions of interest for conducting seismic surveys offshore and invited seven companies to submit proposals They anticipate awarding a contract later this year after completing the evaluation process A 3D seismic study is crucial for oil and gas exploration, as it provides a threedimensional view of what lies beneath the Earth’s surface, facilitating the identification of potential oil and gas reserves

Haiti moves closer to elections with appointment of new Electoral Council
Haiti has taken a significant step toward holding long-awaited presidential and legislative elections with the appointment of a Provisional Electoral Council (CEP)
This marks a critical development for the country, which has been without an elected head of state since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on July 7, 2021 Moïse had served as president since February 2017, following his election in November 2016
The Council of Ministers recently validated the new CEP, a body that the international community has been urging Haiti to establish The Council is now tasked with overseeing the country's first general elections since 2016 and ensuring the transparency of the electoral process Elections are expected by 2026
Smith Augustin, a member of Haiti's transitional presidential council (TCP), confirmed that the new electoral council is in place, although it currently consists of only seven members, short of the nine required by law “The remaining two members are likely to be announced in the coming days,” Augustin said The council includes representatives from various sectors of society, including farmers, journalists, human rights advocates,
and the voodoo community
The previous CEP was dissolved by former Prime Minister Ariel Henry in September 2021, after he accused the council of being “partisan ” This move delayed elections originally scheduled for November 2021,
leading to criticism that Henry was trying to hold onto power He resigned earlier this year following the establishment of the TCP Edgard Leblanc Fils, leader of the transitional body, addressed Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders at their
summit in Grenada in July, outlining plans for elections by the end of 2025 “Since our new efforts and the establishment of the new transitional organ, we are now going to implement our transitional electoral process or system, which will allow us to hold our general elections by the end of next year,” Fils said
He added that Haiti has also launched a national conference to review the Constitution, with a focus on redefining the relationship between the state and its citizens This effort aims to create a new legal framework and operational structure for the government
“It is within this challenging context, particularly marked by the gun violence currently occurring in the capital and other areas of the country, that we aim to remove Haiti from this situation,” Fils said, addressing the severe security concerns plaguing the country
As Haiti moves toward elections, the Provisional Electoral Council will play a pivotal role in shaping the country's future political landscape, while the TCP works to stabilize the nation and set the stage for a peaceful transfer of power
UN Expert Warns of Escalating Gang Violence in Haiti Amid Underfunded Mission
A United Nations human rights expert has warned that gang violence is rapidly spreading across Haiti, as an underfunded and understaffed U N -backed mission targeting criminals struggles to make headway The mission, which was deployed to help restore order in the Caribbean nation, faces severe resource shortages as violence intensifies
William O'Neill, the U N expert who visited Haiti last week, stated that the country's National Police still lack the "logistical and technical capacity" to combat gangs These criminal groups continue to expand their control over new areas as arms and ammunition pour into Haiti, despite an international

"Humanitarian consequences are dramatic," O'Neill said He highlighted the devastating effects of gang violence, including rampant inflation, a shortage of basic goods, and a surge in internally displaced people, which has further exacerbated the vulnerability of the population especially children and women
From April to the end of June 2023, at least 1,379 people were reported killed or injured in Haiti, and another 428 were kidnapped, according to U N figures
In addition, O'Neill pointed out that at least 700,000 people have been left homeless
in recent years due to persistent gang violence in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other regions. More than half of those displaced are children
During his visit, O'Neill spoke with Haiti's police chief, Rameau Normil, who expressed frustration over the lack of manpower Normil revealed that Haiti has only 5,000 active police officers to serve a population of over 11 million "It is impossible to provide security," O'Neill quoted Normil as saying O'Neill also criticized Haitian authorities, stating that the population "lack everything" and called for accountability in the fight against corruption and poor governance,
which he said is plunging the country into an "unprecedented humanitarian crisis "
The current U N -backed mission, which includes 400 Kenyan police officers deployed in late June, has been slow to reach its full strength, with less than a quarter of its pledged contingent in place O'Neill warned that the equipment provided to the mission is "inadequate" and resources are "insufficient " Washington is currently considering a U N peacekeeping operation in Haiti as a potential solution to secure funding and manpower for the Kenya-led mission Meanwhile, the U N continues to push for more financial support for the existing effort
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the US, millions of people were vulnerable to the deadly virus that claimed numerous lives almost daily People, including workers, were cautioned to “social distance” from each other to avoid contamination To alleviate the impact the pandemic was having on the national economy, and workplaces in particular, several companies allowed workers to work from home and communicate with each other and management remotely via phone and internet platforms like Zoom
Workers welcomed the opportunity to commute a few yards from their bedrooms to their home offices rather than traveling miles to and from their workplaces What was initially an urgent solution for work continuity during the pandemic quickly became the norm for many workers and the preferred method of working except in essential industries like healthcare and manufacturing, where hands-on work was required
After the pandemic waned in 2021, many companies maintained the work-from-home policy However, in recent months, more companies have been returning to the prepandemic policy of working from company offices
Last week, Amazon, one of the US's largest employers, became one of the latest companies to end its work-from-home policy The company informed workers they would be expected to work in-office five days a week, barring extenuating circumstances, starting on January 2, 2025 Of course, many Amazon employees, who have grown accustomed to working from home, are unhappy with this decision
The reason given by Amazon's CEO for requiring employees to work from corporate offices is: "Collaborating, brainstorming, and inventing are simpler and more effective; teaching and learning from one another are more seamless; and teams tend to be better connected to one another "
Across the US, there is a vibrant debate regarding the positives and negatives of working from home versus working from the office. The decision on whether American companies should ban work-from-home policies depends on a range of factors, and a blanket ban may not be ideal for every company or industry
Those who support the work-from-home policy cite several benefits, including:
Higher employee productivity: Many studies suggest that working from home improves employee productivity by eliminating commuting time and allowing for more focused work environments It is also argued that employees are more innovative and creative working in a comfortable home setting, where they aren't constantly monitored by supervisors
Greater flexibility: Working from home is said to provide greater flexibility for employees, improving work-life balance and often leading to higher job satisfaction
Cost savings: One of the strongest arguments for the work-from-home policy is the cost-saving implications Both employers and employees can save on overhead costs such as office space, utilities, transportation, lunch, clothing, and laundry expenses
Broader hiring pool: The work-from-home policy allows companies to hire skilled, talented, and experienced workers from a broader geographical area, which can be crucial for
specialized roles without the expense of relocating employees
On the other hand, those who advocate for returning to the office argue that working inperson improves collaboration, fosters creativity, teamwork, and innovation more effectively than virtual meetings
Additionally, maintaining a strong company culture can be more challenging when employees are dispersed, making it difficult to create a sense of belonging. For some companies, managing remote employees may pose challenges in terms of monitoring performance and ensuring accountability
Another strong argument, particularly for companies like Amazon that have invested millions in corporate offices, is that the investment in these facilities is wasted if they sit empty or underutilized
With strong arguments on both sides, some experts believe a compromise is necessary: creating a balanced hybrid model, where employees work part of the week from the office and part from home This model could capture the best of both worlds fostering collaboration and culture in the office while maintaining the flexibility and productivity benefits of remote work
There is also a general agreement that to encourage workers to return to the office, the work environment needs to become more conducive to employee well-being, with a focus on eliminating micromanagement systems
Instead of banning work-from-home policies, companies should adopt flexible solutions tailored to their specific needs, considering factors like industry, job roles, and employee preferences The future of work is likely to be hybrid, blending in-office and remote work to meet both business goals and employee well-being
Thailand to end visa-free travel for several Caribbean nationals
Travelers from Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Thailand starting December 1, 2024.
This change means these travelers will no longer be able to enter Thailand visa-free The move is part of Thailand's ongoing efforts to strengthen immigration controls and enhance border security for international visitors
Caribbean travelers can apply for the ETA online through Thailand's official e-Visa portal The application process is entirely digital and free of charge The ETA allows for a single entry into Thailand and is valid for 60 days Visitors wishing to extend their stay can request a one-time extension of an additional 30 days
Thailand has been a favored destination for travelers from the Caribbean, with cities such as Havana, Santo Domingo, and Kingston seeing an increase in tourists eager to experience the country's beautiful beaches and rich cultural heritage The introduction of the ETA requirement aims to maintain this influx of visitors while bolstering security measures, ensuring that all guests can safely enjoy what Thailand has to offer
While travelers from the Caribbean will need to comply with the new ETA requirement, citizens of Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia will continue to have visa-free access to Thailand without the need for an ETA This decision marks a significant shift in Thailand's immigration policy, reflecting the country's evolving approach to border security and international travel
Jamaica Welcomes Over 2 Million Visitors in 2024 so far
Jamaica's Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, announced that the island has welcomed just over 2 million stopover visitors and approximately 3 million total visitors, including cruise arrivals, from January 1 to September 14, 2024 This marks a significant increase compared to last year's figures for the same period
This milestone was announced as Minister Bartlett departed for Belém, Brazil, to participate in the 4th G20 Tourism Working
Group meeting held from September 19 to 20 “Surpassing 2 million stopover arrivals and welcoming some 3 million total visitors since the start of 2024 is a remarkable achievement for Jamaica,” said Minister Bartlett. He noted that the tourism sector has generated approximately $2 97 billion USD since the beginning of the year Despite facing challenges such as US travel advisories, Hurricane Beryl, and airlift constraints, Jamaica's tourism performance remains
slightly ahead of last year's numbers, showcasing the resilience and ongoing appeal of the island as a premier travel destination Minister Bartlett emphasized the importance of increasing airlift to Jamaica from both new and emerging markets as part of the Ministry's Blue Ocean Strategy The strategy aims to enhance the competitiveness of Jamaica's tourism sector and strengthen partnerships with international carriers and stakeholders, particularly in South America

Broward County Transit launches “Just Try It” campaign to encourage public transit use
Broward County Transit (BCT) has launched a new initiative aimed at encouraging more residents and visitors to use public transportation for their fall travels
The “Just Try It” campaign specifically targets non-riders, particularly those attending concerts, festivals, and other community events, inviting them to consider transit as a convenient option
“There is a lot to do in Broward County, and people depend heavily on their vehicles to get there,” said BCT CEO and General Manager Coree Cuff Lonergan
“In recognizing that reality, Broward County is preparing for a transformative transportation future to provide intermodal transit options to its residents As it continues to advance in this direction, the Just Try It campaign will introduce more people to the benefits of the BCT system and help them discover how public transportation can easily become a part of their journey to experiences that resonate the most with them ” Cuff Lonergan emphasized that by positioning BCT as an integral part of the experience, eventgoers will begin to see transit as more than just a bus ride, but as a seamless connection to what excites them Whether it's a concert in the park or a major sporting event, BCT hopes to offer a hassle-free alternative to the traffic congestion, long wait times, and high parking fees often associated with attending large events
Broward County Transit provides safe, reliable, and economical bus services across a 410-square-mile area through fixed routes, express lanes, community shuttles, and paratransit options
Operating seven days a week, including holidays, BCT connects Broward, MiamiDade, and Palm Beach counties, serving tens of thousands of passengers daily With 36 fixed routes, BCT offers convenient transportation to major event hubs throughout the region
Passengers can plan their trips, access real-time bus tracking, and view schedules by visiting Broward org/BCT or contacting customer service at 954-357-8400
Tree of Life Ministries hosts successful health and wellness fair in Pompano Beach
This past weekend, Tree of Life Ministries International hosted a successful Health, Wellness, and Career Empowerment event at its location on 2971 North Powerline Road in Pompano Beach, FL
The event, which attracted numerous community members, offered a variety of health services, educational workshops, and wellness activities aimed at promoting preventive healthcare and overall well-being in a lively, engaging setting
Sponsored by local businesses, healthcare providers, and nonprofit organizations, the event provided free health screenings, including checks for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and cancer screenings for prostate and cervical health Healthcare professionals were available throughout the day, offering consultations and advice on managing chronic conditions Mental health counselors and wellness coaches led discussions on stress management, healthy lifestyle choices, and the importance of maintaining physical health
A standout feature of the event was the fitness zone, where a fitness instructor led an energizing session that encouraged participants to build core strength The interactive activities demonstrated how simple it can be to incorporate exercise into everyday
routines
In addition to health services, attendees participated in educational workshops covering topics such as nutrition, business, and retirement planning Children enjoyed the Kid Zone, which featured face painting, games, and an up-close look at a Pompano Beach Fire and Rescue truck Event coordinator Dex Donaldson remarked, “Our goal was to connect people with the healthcare and wellness resources they need to live healthier, happier lives It was inspiring to see so many residents take advantage of the services and participate in activities that can improve their well-being Overall,
we were pleased with the turnout and the positive response from the community ” Tree of Life Ministries extended special thanks to all participants and contributors, including key vendors like the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Research Department, Broward Community Health, CAN Community Health, and the OneBlood Organization Sponsors included M&J United Auto Sales, AR1 Realty, Valley Bank, Renaissance Management Group, Voice of the Caribbean Radio, Global Village Impact Corp , and Spirit of Excellence Events
School
Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn emphasized the importance of community dialogue, stating, “This time we ' re coming out to really engage with the community, really hear their thoughts and ideas about this process that ultimately affects their neighborhood ” He acknowledged the challenge of addressing declining enrollment, emphasizing the potential benefits of consolidating students into more populated schools: “It's better to send kids [to a school] with the right amount of resources, the best opportunities possible because when you repurpose a school and you consolidate students, you can leverage better opportunities because there's more funding going to that school now ”
The district's approach to these meetings contrasts with previous town halls, as they aim to foster genuine discussions among community members. Parent Tameko Cuttino expressed her concerns about the potential closures, stating, “I feel that instead of closing those schools, they should find a way to try and work with those schools to see what they need ”
Grandparent Windsor Ferguson echoed this sentiment, noting the potential impact of school closures on property values: “The trend is that usually your property value goes down [if a school is closed] ”
Despite the urgency to address these financial challenges, both the school board and Superintendent Hepburn pledged that no final decisions regarding school closures will be made until public comments are fully reviewed and analyzed Hepburn assured attendees, “We hope that the community provides some ideas that we haven't thought about ” Recommendations will be presented to the school board in November for consideration
As the district navigates these complex discussions, Broward County parents are encouraged to participate in the ongoing community meetings, ensuring their voices are heard in a process that will shape the future of local education
