UNFAIR SMEAR

As the City of Lauderhill mayoral election approaches, frontrunner Denise Grant has found herself at the center of controversy, facing what appear to be politically motivated attacks. These allegations, which centered around a minor legal matter involving the use of a city vehicle, were resolved and closed more than six months ago. However, the issue has resurfaced just days before the election, which her attorney states, is an attempt to undermine her campaign

The allegations claim that Grant misused a city vehicle for personal reasons, but after a thorough investigation by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, she was cleared of any wrongdoing Initially reluctant to respond, Grant has now spoken out about the matter

“I faced allegations regarding my use of a city vehicle during my campaign for Mayor of Lauderhill However, the state attorney investigated the matter and ultimately cleared

the Caribbean, stating, “As you turn your attention to the global financial stage, you will undoubtedly excel and become a great ambassador for the region, and you, Minister, Member, can bank on us to cheer you along ”

Phillip Paulwell, leader of opposition business, expressed that Clarke served with distinction, acknowledging, “We have had reasons to disagree but, that notwithstanding, I think we have to recognize the high quality that the member has brought to debates and the intellectual rigor ” He noted that their interactions were always cordial, underscoring mutual respect despite political differences

Opposition Spokesman on Finance Julian Robinson, who has known Clarke for nearly three decades, praised his contributions, stating, “There's no question that the member has made a positive contribution to Jamaica's development, not just in the House but prior to that in the Senate and the boards on which he served Thank you for what you have done We wish you well as you move forward ”

Prime Minister Andrew Holness commended Clarke for significant achievements during his tenure He pointed out that Clarke was able to increase the country's reserves to the highest levels in decades, presided over several budgets without raising taxes, and reduced the national debt from 145% of GDP to 74% Holness called Clarke's establishment of the Independent Fiscal Commission “ an important institutional legacy,” stating, “It is that institution that will take our fiscal affairs substantially out of the political domain ” He also applauded Clarke for issuing the first international financial instrument denominated in Jamaican dollars and acknowledged Clarke's proactive approach in navigating Jamaica's economic challenges

Clarke's departure was met with a show of affection from colleagues, who surrounded him with warm handshakes and hugs as he prepared to leave for Washington, D C “We have gone through nine budgets and we have not increased taxes These are real things that

have happened to transform our economy under the direction of Minister Clarke as the minister of finance,” Holness remarked

As he prepared for his new role, Clarke bid farewell to his constituents at a Jamaica Labour Party Area Council meeting, endorsing Councillor Dwayne Smith as his successor “While some people leave the playing field and remain in the pavilion, I am leaving the stadium completely having finished my innings not out,” he said. He expressed confidence in Smith's ability to continue the development of the constituency and outlined several initiatives he implemented during his time in office

In closing, Clarke's colleagues, including lawmakers Marlene Malahoo Forte and Desmond McKenzie, also paid tribute to his legacy as one of Jamaica's most effective finance ministers As Clarke embarks on this new chapter, the sentiments shared by his peers underscore the significant impact he has had on the nation's financial landscape

Nigel Clarke: A legacy of Academic Excellence

Nigel Clarke has been the epitome of academic excellence throughout his career

While some critiques of his tenure as Finance

Minister centered around his reputation as a numbers-driven leader, this very precision has clearly worked in his favor Born on October 20, 1971, in St Andrew, Jamaica, Clarke grew up in an upper-middle-class family where intellectual achievement was paramount His father, Justice Neville Clarke, served as a Supreme Court judge, and his mother, Mary Clarke, led the Planning Institute of Jamaica for nearly 20 years Clarke's educational journey began at St Richard's Primary School, followed by Munro College, where he earned the Jamaica Independence Scholarship to study at the University of the West Indies (UWI) He graduated in 1992 with a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, receiving accolades for having the highest marks in his faculty across all UWI campuses

His academic pursuits continued at Linacre College, University of Oxford, where he earned an MSc in Applied Statistics and later a Doctor of Philosophy (D Phil) in Numerical Analysis. Clarke's intellectual rigor was evident even in his thesis, which examined the volatility of the Jamaican Stock Exchange. He married Professor Rupika Deloga, a fellow student at Oxford, and together they have two children

Clarke's political career began in 2016 when he was appointed Jamaica's Ambassador-at-Large for Economic Affairs, signaling his entry into public service He served as a senator before winning a byelection for the North West St. Andrew constituency in 2018 Shortly after, he was appointed Minister of Finance, where his leadership focused on macroeconomic stability and crisis management Under his tenure, Jamaica's debt to GDP ratio was significantly reduced from 110% in 2020 to 72% by 2023, a feat credited to his strategic financial management

In the private sector, Clarke played a pivotal role in the Musson Group, which expanded from Jamaica to over 30 countries in the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, and the Pacific He was instrumental in dozens of acquisitions and corporate transactions, including the acquisition of Nestlé's and Kraft Foods' manufacturing operations in Jamaica His career also began at Goldman Sachs in London as a derivatives trader, where he honed his financial acumen Clarke has successfully structured over US$1 billion in investments for Jamaican businesses, including securing significant private equity and debt investments from international banks and financial institutions His public sector initiatives include the US$400 million divestment of the Kingston Container Terminal and the facilitation of over 5,200 new housing starts in 2017, marking the fastest pace of low-cost housing construction in Jamaica in two decades He also served as the principal negotiator with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), successfully transitioning Jamaica from an Extended Fund Facility agreement to a US$1 6 billion Precautionary Stand-By Arrangement

As he embarks on his new role as Deputy Managing Director at the International Monetary Fund, Clarke leaves behind a legacy of leadership and excellence, embodying the blend of academic brilliance and practical financial stewardship that has defined his career

In a major announcement coinciding with the 45th anniversary of St Vincent and the Grenadines' independence, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves introduced a comprehensive cost-of-living support program to help vulnerable families Starting in December 2024, 3,000 households will receive a monthly "COLA Special" payment of EC$175 through February 2025 to offset rising costs The initiative, expected to cost EC$1 575 million, will be administered by the Ministry of National Mobilization

Grenada's former sports minister

Jonathan La Crette quits ruling party

Former sports minister Jonathan La Crette has officially resigned from Grenada's ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), nearly four months after his dismissal from the Cabinet Confirming his exit in a text message to the Caribbean

Media Corporation (CMC), La Crette acknowledged recent social media reports, which surfaced regarding his departure from the party As of now, the NDC has not issued any formal statement about his resignation

La Crette, a former educator who transitioned to politics in 2022, joined the NDC and contested the St George's Northwest constituency against veteran politician and former Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, who has held the seat since 1984 Although La Crette was defeated in the election, he was later appointed sports minister, a post he held until August 1, 2024, when Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell announced La Crette's removal

The dismissal came without specific reasons beyond the Prime Minister's statement that he had “lost trust and confidence” in La Crette's ministerial role Despite his firing, La Crette had remained the NDC's designated caretaker for St George's Northwest His recent resignation now severs formal ties with the ruling party entirely, leaving his political future uncertain as Grenadian political observers await further statements from both La Crette and the NDC

Bahamas Judge revokes Bail of US woman charged with conspiracy to commit murder

A former American beauty queen, Lindsay Shiver, and her boyfriend, Terrance Bethel, are scheduled to appear in court on Monday to appeal a recent High Court ruling that revoked their bail Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson made the decision last weekend, citing significant breaches of bail conditions and Shiver’s involvement in pre-trial publicity related to the charges of conspiring to kill her estranged husband

Shiver, Bethel and Faron Newbold, Jr, 29, were charged last year with conspiracy to commit murder They allegedly plotted to kill Shiver’s husband, Robert Shiver, on July 16, 2023 Authorities discovered the plot after seizing a phone while investigating another crime

Justice Grant-Thompson had initially granted Shiver US$100,000 bail, requiring her to wear an electronic monitoring device, follow an 8 pm to 6 am (local time) curfew, stay at least 100 feet away from the complainant and witnesses, and refrain from travelling abroad without court permission

Last December, the court varied her bail conditions, allowing her to travel to the United States, but forcing her not to enter Georgia, where her husband lives, unless to engage in custody and divorce proceedings

But the court heard that on October 3, this year, Shiver and Bethel were interviewed on Good Morning America, allegedly giving in-depth information about their trial, which had not started

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions submitted several affidavits in support of an application to revoke Shiver and Bethel’s bail

The judge said that her interview on

Good Morning America was a “blatant disregard for the court’s leniency and indulgence”

“This cannot and will not be tolerated What the respondents have done can be seen by the applicant as a spit in the face of justice The applicant has submitted this could influence the views of the potential jurors intending to sit in this trial

“Thus, potentially affecting the administration of justice If it were the other way around had counsel for the Crown proceeded on a frolic of their own, making unnecessary comments to the international media, the respondents would likely be ‘ up in arms ’”

The judge also rejected arguments from the defendant’s lawyers about whether she breached her bail conditions

“It was clearly laid out that if Mrs Shiver wished to travel or move outside of the designated area, she was first to contact and request the permission of the court,” she wrote in her ruling, adding that in

revoking Shiver’s bail, she was also “taking her out of harm’s way ” , noting the report that her boyfriend tried to “choke and suffocate her with a pillow in Alabama”

“This is a serious concern for the court because this potential situation may inhibit Mrs Shiver’s ability to attend the trial for this matter,” the judge said

In the case of Bethel, who had his bail conditions varied in June, the prosecutors said he did not follow rules for signing in at a police station Migrafill Electronic Security Company said he violated his signin conditions 12 times between April 29 and October 4, 2024

“The court does not distribute written and printed bail rulings to the parties because it has nothing better to do nor because it is enamored by the feel of printed paper,” Justice Grant-Thompson wrote, adding “written orders and rulings are handed out to the parties to ensure that there is no confusion as to what conditions the accused person must adhere to”

JetBlue, Spirit suspend flights to Haiti amid spike in gang violence

U S. airlines JetBlue and Spirit have suspended flights to Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in response to a recent spike in gang violence and instability.

JetBlue will continue to operate its direct flight from New York City, though neither airline has commented publicly on the specific reasons for the Fort Lauderdale cancellations

This decision follows a grim report from the United Nations, which revealed that over 10,000 people have been displaced due to violent attacks around the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area just this past week Haiti, already struggling with severe political, humanitarian, and security crises, has been further destabilized this year by violent armed gang activity, which escalated dramatically and contributed to the resignation of Haiti's unelected prime minister

An interim government is now in place, and an international support mission led by

Kenya is working to strengthen Haiti's police force However, the deployment is still below the intended operational scale, leaving Haitian authorities largely unable to reclaim vast areas of the capital under gang control

Violence erupted last week in the Solino district of southern Port-au-Prince, where at least two women, including one who was eight months pregnant, were killed, displacing thousands The unrest follows a particularly

brutal gang attack in early October in PontSonde, a central Haitian town, which left 115 civilians dead and dozens injured

Tensions have also affected international missions: the U S embassy reported that two of its armored vehicles were fired upon by gangs, though no injuries occurred Last Thursday, a helicopter operated by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) was hit by gunfire while flying over Port-au-Prince

The helicopter was able to land safely, with all 18 passengers unharmed

“Uncertainty in Haiti continues while the ramping violence of armed groups and food insecurity continues to plant Haiti into a spiral crisis that requires urgent attention,” WFP Director for Haiti, Waanja Kaaria, said at a press conference on Friday

A recent report from the WFP revealed that 5 4 million Haitians, nearly half of the population, are currently facing acute hunger, underscoring the severe humanitarian challenges gripping the nation

CARICOM expresses 'deep concern' over tensions within Haitian leadership

On Monday, CARICOM voiced “deep concern ” about escalating public disagreements between Leslie Voltaire, President pro tempore of Haiti's Transitional Council, and Acting Prime Minister Garry Conille, warning that the discord threatens Haiti's fragile transitional process

In a statement, CARICOM noted that “this growing lack of cohesion imperils the transitional process based on the spirit and the principles of compromise, consensus, and inclusiveness set out in the political agreement of 11 March 2024 in Jamaica and the political

accord of 3 April 2024 drawn up by the Haitian stakeholders ”

The regional body described the conflict as “unseemly and distracting” amid worsening insecurity and a deepening humanitarian crisis in Haiti It added, “This is further deepening and prolonging the despair of the Haitian people seeking a glimmer of hope and relief impeding the provision of the critical assistance that Haiti urgently requires to address and overcome the complex crisis in which it is presently mired ”

CARICOM warned that this “perilous

moment in time calls for cohesiveness and joint focus in addressing the many challenges that obstruct the search for stability and progress towards the objectives of the transition ”

CARICOM emphasized that its Eminent Persons Group (EPG), chaired by former Saint Lucia Prime Minister Kenny Anthony and including former prime ministers of Jamaica and The Bahamas, is “closely monitoring these disquieting developments.” According to CARICOM, the EPG “engaged in discussions with the President of the Transitional Council

and the Prime Minister to better understand the roots of the disagreement [in order] to guide its efforts to facilitate and restore comity between the leaders of the executive branch ”

The EPG intends to continue its efforts to foster unity for as long as necessary, CARICOM said

In closing, CARICOM urged all members of Haiti's Transitional Presidential Council and interim government to focus on “working for the Haitian people and the important task at hand — which is to lay the ground for free and fair elections by February 2026 ”

The Importance of the Black Vote

Both the Donald Trump and Kamala Harris presidential campaigns are intensively targeting the African American voting bloc in their strategies to secure the presidency. Ironically, a population once marginalized is now critical to winning elections in America

The history of Black voting rights is complex and deeply intertwined with civil rights struggles and the pursuit of equality Black men were granted the right to vote after the Civil War with the ratification of the 15th A m e n d m e n t i n 1 8 7 0 D u r i n g t h e Reconstruction period, Black Americans, particularly in the South, actively participated in elections and held political office However, this progress was short-lived

Following Reconstruction, Southern states enacted Jim Crow laws that controlled Black voters through literacy tests, poll taxes, and other practices The Civil Rights Movement surged in the 1950s, leading to the signing of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts in 1965, which aimed to eliminate barriers to voting and established federal protections against voter suppression

Today, Black voters are a significant force in American politics, especially in key swing states The Black vote became particularly vital during the 2008 presidential election when Barack Obama, the first Black presidential candidate, won That year, Black voter turnout surged to a historic high of 65%, with Obama receiving about 95% of those votes In 2012, Black voter turnout exceeded white voter turnout for the first time in U S history and again proved crucial to Obama's re-election

In contrast, the 2016 elections saw Black voter turnout decline to about 59 6%, attributed to diminished enthusiasm This drop contributed to Hillary Clinton's loss in key states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and

Together we can build a brighter future for Lauderdale Lakes

Wisconsin, where lower Black turnout had a significant impact The Black vote rebounded in 2020, with approximately 87% of Black voters supporting Democrat Joe Biden Mobilization efforts in cities with large Black populations such as Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia—helped flip crucial swing states

Undoubtedly, the Black vote has decisively shaped election outcomes, prompting presidential campaigns to prioritize policies and outreach that address issues important to Black communities, including criminal justice reform, economic equality, and healthcare access Historically, Black voters have supported the Democratic Party for various reasons Initially, during President Abraham Lincoln's era, the Republican Party was favored due to its anti-slavery stance However, the 20th century marked a significant shift President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs in the 1930s provided much-needed economic relief to Black communities, aligning many Black voters with the Democratic Party

The Party's increased support for civil rights in the 1960s, particularly through President Lyndon Johnson's efforts, solidified this alignment

The Democratic Party continues to champion policies that resonate with Black Americans, including criminal justice reform and affordable healthcare In recent years, the Republican Party has made efforts to attract Black voters, arguing that the Democratic Party has not significantly improved their lives. This presidential campaign has seen Republicans intensively seeking Black support, particularly in key swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, and Wisconsin Although Florida is now considered a Republican stronghold, both the Harris and Trump campaigns are making efforts to reach Black voters, including Caribbean Americans The struggle for voting rights has been long and challenging for Black voters in Florida, underscoring the importance of their participation The Black vote is indeed making a difference

Election worker fired after ballot box falls from truck

Just days ahead of Election Day, Miami-Dade County's Elections Department is facing scrutiny after a ballot box was discovered on a roadway, having fallen from an unlocked truck This incident, which led to the dismissal of an election worker, has raised alarms among local residents and prompted responses from election officials

The incident occurred between 9:30 and 10:00 p m on Monday as an elections worker departed the South Dade Regional Library, where early voting had concluded for the day A sealed ballot bin and a sealed bag, both containing ballots from early voting, reportedly fell off the truck due to an unsecured rear door

Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections Christina White explained that the lapse was due to “ an unfortunate human error ” According to White, the worker neglected to lock the truck's rear door, causing the items to drop onto the road as they left the early voting site

“It was an unfortunate human error on the part of one of our workers,” White said, adding that the worker was responsible for returning voted ballot bins and other election materials to headquarters “They just forgot to lock the back of the truck, and when they pulled out of the early voting site, the door opened, and one ballot bin and one bag fell out of the truck ”

me of any wrongdoing, closing the case I believe these allegations were a politically motivated attack aimed at tarnishing my reputation and undermining my candidacy,” said Grant

Cellphone footage shared by Only in Dade quickly circulated online, showing the ballot box and bag on the road Several bystanders retrieved the materials and promptly took them to a local police station White commended these residents for their actions, saying, “We were very fortunate that there were upstanding residents that happened to see this unfold, and they did the responsible thing and turned it into the local Miami-Dade Police Department ” White assured the public that the ballot materials were still secure, as both items were sealed, confirming no signs of tampering Inside the bin were backup paper ballots from one voting machine at the South Dade Regional Library, which had already been electronically counted, while the bag contained a single provisional ballot awaiting eligibility review White sought to ease any concerns over vote integrity, stating, “These represented the ballots that went into one of those units so I want to put

voters' minds at ease that their votes were counted, they were cast and counted accurately ” White further noted that while the incident was unprecedented, election procedures were immediately reviewed with staff, emphasizing the importance of ballot security “The employee was absolutely distraught over it, but in the elections field, we have zero tolerance for error,” White said, underscoring the department's commitment to accurate vote handling

To maintain public confidence, White highlighted that all Miami-Dade elections undergo an audit In a statement, Miami-Dade Elections expressed gratitude to the witnesses, calling them “upstanding citizens” for quickly turning in the fallen items

After being returned to the MiamiDade Police Department's South District Station, election officials inspected the ballot box and bag, verifying all seals were intact Officials affirmed that despite the incident, ballot integrity remained intact and that stringent handling procedures are firmly in place to prevent similar issues

“Everything was brought back as it should be sealed, tamper-free,” White said, urging voters to feel confident in the election process

Despite the resurfacing of these claims, Grant says that she remains focused on her campaign and the issues that matter to Lauderhill residents

“Lauderhill deserves leadership that is dedicated to excellence and committed to building a brighter future My accomplishments reflect these values, and I am proud to have the support of our residents Unfortunately, my opponents have resorted to spreading falsehoods and engaging in smear tactics. But I am confident that the community knows who I am and the work I’ve done Let’s vote for integrity and commitment to our community,” Grant added

The investigation, led by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and later the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, was thorough FDLE gathered documents, interviewed several witnesses, and received a voluntary statement from Commissioner Grant, who cooperated fully and even gave her statement without legal representation After reviewing the case, the Broward County State Attorney's Office recused itself, assigning the investigation to the MiamiDade State Attorney's Public Corruption Unit

In the end, after a comprehensive review of the evidence, the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office concluded the case, deciding not to file any criminal charges

“The timing of these allegations being reignited is political theater as Election Day is just around the corner, and the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office closed this case back in April 2024,” said Eric Schwartzreich, Grant’s attorney

A memo from the State Attorney’s office, further emphasized that the City of Lauderhill lacked an official process or documentation regarding the use of city vehicles by commissioners Without key evidence, such as mileage logs or city-specific markings on the vehicle, the state could not prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt

For these reasons, the State Attorney's Office formally closed the case, and no charges was filed

US surgeon criticizes Jamaica’s health infrastructure after postponed surgery for child

United States-based surgeon Dr Robert Brady is calling out the condition of Jamaica’s public healthcare infrastructure after his team was forced to delay a crucial surgery for an 11year-old girl due to poor operating conditions

Dr Brady, section chief at Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut, traveled with a team of specialists earlier this month to perform lifechanging orthopedic surgeries for children facing severe health challenges, including scoliosis

Although Brady has visited Jamaica for nearly two decades to conduct these procedures, he described this trip as “terrible,” revealing that his team managed only five surgeries this time four at the Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC) and one at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) This falls well below the 12 to 16 surgeries they typically complete, which Brady attributed to inadequate infrastructure, including an operating theater that was plagued with mold, air-conditioning issues, and a lack of essential equipment

The delay impacted young Ajanae

Parchment, whose spinal curvature, initially diagnosed at 25 degrees, has since progressed to a severe 85 degrees Her mother, Sandra Aitcheson, confirmed that the BHC’s operating conditions prevented her daughter’s surgery Brady disclosed that his team had requested to perform surgeries at other hospitals due to the air-conditioning problems, but their request went unaddressed a decision he found disappointing given the mission’s objective to help as many children as possible In response to the initial article in the Jamaica Gleaner, Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton held a press conference at BHC He announced new arrangements for Ajanae’s surgery to proceed at UHWI

However, Dr Brady highlighted the difficulty of accommodating such changes on short notice, particularly when his team was set to depart the next day “You can’t make that request one day prior to us leaving and expect it to be granted,” he remarked, expressing frustration over the situation “Our facilities need to be to the point where they actually want us to come here and help as many people

as possible ”

Dr Tufton addressed the situation further by shedding light on some underlying systemic challenges Jamaica faces with maintaining medical equipment

Unlike in the United States, where equipment maintenance is routine and parts or replacements are readily accessible, Jamaica often experiences delays because specialists or parts need to come from locations as far away as Germany and New York To alleviate these issues, Tufton shared that the government is shifting toward a new leasing system starting next month, where leased equipment will come with extended service agreements and outsourced maintenance

“I am not making excuses but am giving context to why we face these issues and the steps we ’ re taking to solve them,” Tufton explained, acknowledging that infrastructure shortfalls place Dr Brady’s team under “lessthan-ideal circumstances” given their high standards and experience in the U S

Entertainment Court of Appeal cites missing witnesses and exhibits in denial of Vybz Kartel retrial

The Jamaican Court of Appeal has released a detailed judgment outlining its decision not to pursue a retrial for dancehall artist Vybz Kartel and his co-defendants

Kartel, along with Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell and Andre St John, was freed in July following a decade-long legal battle over the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams

In its 70-page ruling, the court noted significant procedural and logistical challenges that influenced its decision, primarily focusing on the prosecution’s failure to secure the necessary witnesses and evidence from the original trial

According to the judgment, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had not provided sufficient proof that all critical witnesses were available and willing to testify again An affidavit from Senior Deputy DPP Jeremy Taylor was submitted, stating efforts were made to locate witnesses, but the judges found these efforts insufficient

The ruling emphasized the importance of securing reliable evidence before a retrial Missing exhibits including video recordings, v o i c e n o t e s , a n d o t h

pieces complicated the case further These items, once held in the custody of the Supreme Court, were never accounted for, and the judges remarked that their absence would weaken the prosecution’s case and undermine

the defense’s ability to argue effectively if a retrial were to proceed

The court also considered additional factors, such as the lengthy time Kartel and his co-accused had already spent in custody, the

financial and logistical strains of a retrial, and the potential violation of the defendants’ constitutional rights to a timely hearing The anticipated timeline for a new trial was estimated at 15 years, a period that the judges found prohibitive, especially given the nature of the original trial and the health issues faced by the defendants

Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop, leading the panel of three judges, concluded, “The interests of justice do not require a new trial to be ordered for the appellants ” In addition to procedural concerns, she noted the toll another lengthy trial would take on the defendants, stating that the combination of missing evidence, witness availability, and extensive resource demands weighed heavily against a retrial

This decision marks a significant closure to one of Jamaica’s most high-profile criminal cases, with Kartel, Campbell, and St John now free. The court’s judgment brings clarity to its rationale, underscoring the unique challenges and complexities surrounding the case and their ultimate impact on the decision not to proceed with a retrial
