The facility is Central New York’s only academic medical center, which educates 1,200 students in four colleges: medicine, graduate studies, health professions and nursing. The $50 million hospital occupies the top floors of University Hospital’s $150 million East Tower. � What’s new: In October 2010, the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) recognized Upstate University

Upstate University was also given a total of $3.1 million in federal grants in October 2010. The grants will go towards training physicians in medically undeserved areas throughout New York State. The grants were given by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

By 1908 the hospital, renamed Syracuse Hospital for Women and Children, had begun to admit men. By 1918, the hospital’s services had expanded and its name was again changed, this time to Syracuse Memorial Hospital. In 1929, the hospital moved to its current location. Crouse Irving Hospital, which operated across the street from Syracuse Memorial, was founded in 1912 by a group of physicians and investors led by Dr. William Wallace. The two facilities merged in 1968 in an effort to consolidate medical services and became the Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital. The center has 235 authorized beds. � What’s new: A newly funded 30-bed project for a spinal cord injury/disease center has been approved and is projected for completion by 2012. The project is coupled with two additional floors that have been added to the parking garage, to make eight levels of parking. Two hundred-seventy spaces will be added on the sixth floor spinal cord. The spinal cord addition will include seven additional operating rooms, a therapeutic pool, an expanded dialysis unit and expanded outpatient services.

Fort Drum, originally named Pine Camp, has been used as a military training site since 1908. During World War II the camp, renamed Camp Drum, was massively expanded. Workers constructed 240 barracks, 84 mess halls, 86 storehouses, 58 warehouses, 27 officers’ quarters, 22 headquarters buildings, 99 recreational buildings, a hospital and numerous guardhouses. In 1985, the Army activated the 10th Mountain Division after selecting Fort Drum as the division’s new home during the previous year. The 10th Mountain Division is trained for rapid deployment by land, sea or air. Fort Drum was outfitted with additional barracks to house an additional 5,000 troops who arrived at the base by the end of 2004. World War II-era buildings are also being renovated to be better able to handle the increased number of personnel. The development, construction and management of 554 single family, duplex homes for the Fort Drum Army Base were under way in 2009. The project is expected to cost approximately $184 million, including $75 million in additional

federal government equity contributions granted by Congress. It’s expected to be complete by July 2011. � What’s new: Fort Drum is a prominent fiber in the fabric of the Northern New York community. The installation provides employment for more than 4,000 area residents and millions of dollars in trade for local businesses. Soldiers and their family members receive medical care from local health care providers and enroll in local schools and colleges. Staunch community support by way of programs such as Project Strong Communities and Operation Yellow Ribbon further connect our military and civilian communities. The resulting economic and social impact benefits not only Northern New York, but New York State as a whole. In April 2010, Fort Drum Deputy to the Garrison Commander, Judith L. Gentner, was awarded the Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service. In May 2010, Fort Drum brought home its first Army Communities of Excellence Award under the category of exemplary practices for transforming the way soldiers in the field treat culturally sensitive places such as religious sites, historical places and ruins. In June 2010, Fort Drum officially opened its new meditation labyrinth. The Fort Drum Cultural Resources Program used money earned from their 2009 Best Overall Cultural Resource Team in the Department of Defense Award to fund the labyrinth.
