It is common knowledge that the early years are important in a child’s educational development – it’s a time to learn the basics, form good habits and, most of all, gain enthusiasm and a thirst for knowledge. I have seen, firsthand, the growth of my children’s vocabulary, from the inevitable first words – “No!” or “More!” – to the not-so-pleasant words they pick up through television programs and casual, unthinking conversations they’ve heard. Like their first steps, the learning of the alphabet or how to count to 10 are milestones that are met with fanfare and repeated performances for friends and relatives. It is at this time, when they are experiencing a growing pride in their accomplishments, that parents can take advantage of their kids’ desire to soak up everything around them. Read to them, bring them to new places, widen their experiences, and the rewards are endless. When Cassidy was ready, we decided to look into preschools in order to give her some early classroom experience. We didn’t go into it lightly, as no parent should. We weighed many factors: program depth, class size, distance from home, time and days of the week, and there were quite a few schools that fit the bill. What decided it for us was more of a feeling; the school we chose was bright, welcoming and, quite frankly, had a sterling reputation. It would turn out that reputation was well-deserved, and Cassidy blossomed, made new friends and learned an amaz-

ing amount in the few short years she was there. When Jacob reached preschool age, it was a no-brainer to send him there as well. His path was already well-worn by his little feet; he had spent many mornings along for the ride to drop and pick See Preschool on page 19

he last time you lost something, you thought you were seriously never going to hear the end of it. First, you got some grief from your mother about how she can’t afford to keep buying new whatever-it-was-you-lost. Then your dad chimed in and gave you a lecture about blah responsibility blah. So you lost something. Things can be replaced. But what about people? In the “The Replacement” by Brenna Yovanoff, a teenager finds out that his life is not what he thought it was. The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer. Terri has One of Emma Doyle’s first memories was when she was four years old, been reading since she was 3 years old and she peeking through the slats of her baby never goes anywhere without a book. She lives brother’s crib. Mostly, she rememon a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 11,000 bered his black, black eyes and his books. sharp teeth as he tried to bite her. Imagination? Maybe, but there was something different about sixteen-year-old Mackey Doyle…. So you say you like things dark and creepy – the darker and creepier, the better, right? Well, you’re in luck: “The Replacement” is dark as a dungeon and very, very crEEEEEpy. But why, well, I can’t exactly put my cold, dead finger on it. Author Brenna Yovanoff presents quite a fine story about a changeling boy who learns that everything in Gentry is pretty rotten – literally – and that he can fix it, but it won’t be pleasant. Or maybe it’s because of the performance by Kevin T. Collins, who brings Mackey to life (or would that be “death”?) and who does such a fine job on the mood and other characters that you’ll feel like you could visit them… if you dare…. Be aware that there’s profanity in this audiobook, so you might want to think twice about sharing it with a younger brother or sister. But for you, if you love your books dark as a moonless night, “The Replacement” is one to lose yourself in.

Hard to believe, but in a few months, the school year will end.

The holiday season is over, football season is just a memory, and winter will be done soon. All good – and bad – things must come to an end. And that includes lives, too. In the new book “Dreadful Fates: What a Shocking Way to Go!” by Tracey Turner, illustrated by Sally Kindberg, you’ll learn about a few fatal finishes, extraordinary endings, and gruesome gravestones of people throughout history. As you probably know, there are all kinds of ways to leave this Earth. And while nobody really wants to go, sometimes things happen. Take, for instance, what befell thirty-five individuals who tried, over the years, to get a free soda by shaking a vending machine. The machine tipped over on them and…. oops. Accidents like that are as ancient as time. Scientists once found a skeleton of a man beneath a huge stone in Wiltshire, England. They think he was helping to move one of the stones and what happened, well, that must’ve hurt. But is this subject funny? You decide, but be careful what you choose. In 1599, the King of Burma died laughing… If you’ve got middleschoolers around, you know how they love a good shiver and they love out-grossing their friends. What they’ll find inside “Dreadful Fates” will tickle them to death. Reaching back as far as ancient times (but including some recent deadly deeds), author Tracey Turner buries kids in dozens of short, silly and shuddery endings of the rich, the common, geniuses, doofuses, and those in the wrong place at the wrong time. This isn’t one of those give-a-kid-a-nightmare books, though: Turner and illustrator Sally Kindberg give their subject a lighthearted twist, which makes it perfect for all but the most sensitive of young souls. For 9-to-12-year-olds, “Dreadful Fates” is a great book to have when they’re ready to kill some time in a fun way. And in The End, buying this book is way better than buying the farm.

Eat Right during National Nutrition Month Explore ‘Kids Eat Right!’ By Susan Branning, MBA, RD, CNSD, CDN Every year during the month of March, the American Dietetic Association along with Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians across the country celebrate National Nutrition Month. This year’s theme is “Eat Right with Color” which encourages consumers to remember to include a colorful variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein and dairy on their plates everyday. We all know that eating healthy is important to families everyday, not just in March, so in November, the American Dietetic Association and American Dietetic Association Foundation launched their joint initiative, the Kids Eat Right campaign, which aims to promote healthier eating among families by reaching out to parents and caretakers with recipes, articles, weekly tips and videos all designed by Registered Dietitians. The Kids Eat Right campaign has three cornerstones: Shop Smart - To encourage a healthy lifestyle, get your children involved in selecting the food that will appear at the breakfast, lunch or dinner table. Cook Healthy - Involve your child in the cutting, mixing and preparation of all meals. Even a snack can be healthy. Eat Right - Sit down together as a family to enjoy a wonderful meal and the opportunity to share the day’s experiences with one another. With so much nutrition information available from such a wide variety of sources, it’s important to know where to go for reliable nutrition information. To learn how to help your family eat healthier and achieve a healthier lifestyle and to take part in the Kids Eat Right campaign visit: eatright.org/kids. For trusted sources of reliable nutrition information, be sure to look for the RD (Registered Dietitian) credential. Susan Branning, MBA, RD, CNSD, CDN, is a clinical nutrition manager at Upstate University Hospital.

Rainbow Penne Pasta (by Melissa Ohlson, MS, RD, LD) Here’s just a sample of one great recipe from Kids Eat Right that will help you and your family eat right:

Servings: 8 (1 cup servings), Prep Time: 10 minutes, Cook Time: 10 minutes Ingredients 8 ounces uncooked penne pasta 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 16-ounce package frozen broccoli florets, thawed 1 16-ounce can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed 1 medium-size red bell pepper, thinly sliced; slices halved ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup freshly grated or shredded Parmesan cheese Freshly ground black pepper to taste Directions 1.Cook the pasta in boiling salted water according to the package directions. 2.Heat the oil in a large skillet over low heat. 3.Add the garlic and sauté 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to fully release into the oil. 4.Add the broccoli, beans, pepper, 3 tablespoons water, and salt. 5.Cover and adjust heat to medium. Steam, stirring occasionally, 5 to 7 minutes, or until the broccoli is hot and the pepper is crisp tender. 6.Toss the pasta with the vegetables. Top with the Parmesan cheese and fresh pepper. Cooking Tips For a spicier flavor, add more garlic and/or pepper. Substitute any vegetables your children (or you) like, varying cooking time as needed.

Safety alert

Common dangers to kids on the home front Often overlooked safety traps put children at risk Each year in the U.S., more than 2,000 children under the age of 14 die as a result of a home injury, according to Safe Kids USA, a non-profit organization. “Parents often underestimate their kids’ abilities and overestimate their intelligence,” says Chrissy Cianflone, director of program operations at Safe Kids USA. “They think, my child’s too smart to do X and they often don’t realize how strong their kids are.” There are so many things to think about as you safe-proof your home to protect small children that it’s easy to overlook important risks. Most people are aware of common safety measures like covering your electrical outlets, keeping your child away from hot stoves and watching them like a hawk as they bathe, but there are other dangers that don’t readily come to mind.

Cords from window treatments

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, one child a month between the ages of 7 months and 10 years dies from strangulation or is severely injured by near strangulation from the loose strings or

cords on window blinds and shades. A window covering advertised as cord-less does not mean that it is truly cord-free. Kenney Manufacturing’s new Truly CordFreeTM Roman Shades use a twist wand to raise and lower the shade and inner mechanisms to eliminate all strings and cords. kenney.com.

Dressers and other tall furniture

Dressers are dangerous because they are heavy, not always well balanced and can be pulled over if a child tries to climb them. An unsteady toddler trying to climb doesn’t understand that a heavy object can topple. Invest in brackets found at home improvement stores or baby stores like Babies R Us to anchor dressers, TVs and wall units. Keep heavier items on lower shelves or in lower drawers, and don’t keep remote controls or temptations like candy or toys on top of furniture. BabiesRUs.com .

Window screens

Never rely on a window screen to keep children safe from an open window. Screens are for keeping insects out, not for keeping kids in. Invest in heavier child-proof

window screens, which cost under $30. Don’t place furniture by a window, potentially creating a climbing opportunity and the associated risk. cpsc.gov/cpscpub/ prerel/prhtml00/00126.html.

Open medication containers

Be vigilant about your child’s safety away from home. A risky situation can exist when a child visits a grandparents’ home where pills may be left within their reach. Vitamins and OTC medications can be extremely dangerous to children. Remind family members and caretakers to buy pill bottles with child safety caps and keep all medicines and pills out of your child’s reach, preferably locked up.

Under the kitchen sink

More than 100 children ages 14 and under die each year from unintentional poisoning, according to Safe Kids USA. In addition to household cleaning supplies, pesticides, cosmetics, art supplies, paint products and alcohol are dangerous to children. To avoid accidental poisoning, store these products up high in locked cabinets. It is a good idea to install a safety latch to keep the doors to under the kitchen sink secured at all times.

Pre-School & Nursery School Programs

Pre-School and nursery school programs generally serve children 3 to5 years of age and follow the school calendar, closing for the summer, school breaks and holidays. Private or public schools may operate full-day programs in their buildings, but non-school programs generally operate less than 3 hours per day unless they are licensed as child care centers. Hours of operation are not listed as they vary greatly. Please call programs for their specific schedules. Though some of the programs listed below are licensed as child care centers and some are school-based programs which fall under State Education Department standards, part-day community nursery and pre-school programs are not required to be regulated in NY State. Some may choose to voluntarily register with the State Education Department, but are typically not inspected. Parents are encouraged to inquire about health and safety standards when interviewing programs. Choosing child care that fits By Peggy Liuzzi Executive Director, Child Care Solutions There’s no one-size fits all solution to families’ child care needs. There are many factors to consider when looking for a child care program that works for both children and their parents. Luckily families in CNY have a variety of child care options from which to choose. Here are some things to think about.

Know your child:

Some children thrive in a busy classroom with several teachers and a group of children all in the same age range. Other children are more comfortable with one caregiver and a smaller group of children of different ages. Think about your child’s age, interests and temperament when exploring possible child care settings.

Make a list of your family’s needs:

Do you need a program that is close to home or work or in-between? What hours of care do you need to fit your work schedule and daily commute? If you have more than one child, do you want all your children in the same program? Does your school-age child need transportation between his or her school and after-school program?

Know your options:

programs in your area. Child Care Solutions also provides free, personalized referrals to child care programs in Onondaga and Cayuga Counties that match your specific criteria. And be sure to check with family and friends to see what child care programs they use.

Research costs and financial assistance:

Child care costs vary greatly depending on the program, hours and the age of your child. There are also several resources that can assist eligible parents with the cost of child care. These include the Dependent Care Tax Credit, employer Flexible Spending Accounts, county child care subsidies and child care scholarship programs. To learn more, contact Child Care Solutions.

Take time to visit and ask lots of questions:

At Child Care Solutions, we always encourage parents seeking child care for the first time or making a change in their child’s care to visit several programs before making a decision. This is your opportunity to get a feel for each setting and to gather information about the program. When possible, visit at a time when you can observe the adults interacting with the children and see the children at play. Look for a safe environment with good health practices like hand washing. Ask to see the outdoor play space as well as the indoor space and find out what a typical day is like for the children. Ask specific questions about mealtimes, napping, TV and computer time, early literacy activities, and discipline techniques. For specific information about child care options, financial aid and a checklist of questions for screening child care, contact Child Care Solutions at 315-446-1220 or 888-729-7290, ext. 303 or childcaresolutions.org.

March 2011

The ever important personal essay By Maria Badami Finally, March is here and the last of the college applications are submitted. For those seniors and parents of seniors who have reached this point, congratulations. We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief. Give it a few weeks and I am sure you will all be on speaking terms again soon! For those that have put off the college application process, and are now beginning to contemplate this gargantuan task, I offer some perspective on the ever important college essay. For years now I’ve been preaching that the student’s transcript, challenging curriculum, GPA and SAT or ACT scores were the most important in the application decision process. While still very important, the new reality is that the personal essay is growing increasingly in importance. Why would a short single page essay matter so much? All things being the same or similar (grades, scores, activities, recommendations), the essay suddenly becomes meaningful and often the tie breaker. According to the National Association of College Admission Counseling, in 1993 only 14% of colleges indicated that the personal essay was of “considerable importance” in deciding who gets in, as opposed to 26% in 2009. That goes

up considerably among the most selective colleges. So how difficult is it to write a personal essay? Let me explain. The personal essay is intended to be a composition where the student’s voice is meant to come through. Students are challenged to share in the firstperson an experience, event, thing that has had a meaningful impact on them and how. Not that difficult you say? Well it is if you have not had experience or learned how to write this way. The typical high school curriculum emphasizes analytical and argumentative essays, not self reflective prose. Even the best students taking AP English courses are not taught this, practicing expository writing instead. I do not have an answer for how to tackle this challenge. It is not my place to change our students’ curriculum or college’s choice of essay format. I do know, however, that I spend the bulk of my time with students having them read samples of personal prose and exercising their own skills in this writing style.

Child Care Centers

A child care center provides care in a nonresidential facility. Children are cared for in groups according to their age and the number of caregivers. Care can be provided for children ages 6 weeks through 12 years. Each center determines the ages of children they will accept into their program. Several child care centers do offer a school-age option within their program. All child care centers are licensed by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services. Programs must meet minimum standards for health, safety, nutrition, and children’s programming. The staff and Director are required to meet specific education and/or work standards. Unless otherwise noted, all child care centers listed here are open during school holidays, breaks, and summers.

Some parents may not be able to have their children attend preschool, or may not want them to go to school before kindergarten, and perhaps that is best for them and their family. If you are considering preschool or other child care for your children, turn to our child care directory on page 7 for a listing of wonderful institutions in our community. As for our children, preschool was the best decision, and one that formed a wonderful foundation for their education.
