hey may not be Niagara Falls, but Central New York’s waterfalls offer pretty scenery closer to home. In Cazenovia, Chittenango Falls State Park (315-637-6111) offers 194 acres of hiking (among five trails), fishing, picnicking space (including grills), and a 167-ft. waterfall. Since the falls are right off the highway, you won’t have to hike a distance to see them. But as long as you’re going, why not bring a picnic basket and watch birds, look for unusual plant life, and hike around for a while? The park also includes a playground for the children. Canastota’s Oxbow Falls County Park (315-366-2376) boasts 125 acres of woods, streams and three waterfalls, including a 100-foot waterfall. Bring along the wide angle lens to capture panoramic shots, as the view ranges from Oneida Lake to Lake Ontario. Don’t forget your flying disc to play the park’s 18-hold disc golf course. The park also features a softball field.

Most people flock to Howes Cave to explore Howe’s Caverns; however, just down the road, the Secret Caverns (518-296-8558) features a more rustic spelunking adventure and a surprise at the end: a 100-foot, underground waterfall. The caves’ temperatures stay stable and cool on the hottest summer days, so take a break from the heat in Howes Cave. Like Chittenango Falls State Park, Wolcott Falls Park in Wolcott (315-5949501), features a waterfall close to the road (in fact, you may drive over the 50foot waterfall without knowing it). The upper portion of the park includes an observation deck overlooking the falls, grills and picnic pavilion, and a small playground. Don’t miss the trailhead on the opposite side of the park. The short hiking path that winds through the woods to the base of the waterfall. There’s not much else to do in Wolcott Falls Park, but the village shopping district, a block from the park, includes
dining and a few mom-and-pop shops to explore. Plan ahead for exploring area waterfalls. Since some parks book private events, call before you go to ensure access and hours. Most parks allow dogs if they’re on leashes less than six feet long, but ask first. Bring along your own trash bags in case you cannot find a trash receptacle so you can keep CNY parks clean. Also ask if the park is handicapped accessible. Some offer amenities that cannot accommodate wheelchairs, for example, and most include uneven terrain. You may need to pay a nominal parking fee, so bring along a few dollars. Consider purchasing a $65 Empire Pass to save on admission and parking fees. Each pass admits all passengers in your vehicle to all 180 state park for an entire year. Visit www.nysparks.com for more details. For more waterfalls statewide, visit www.nyfalls.com.

Keep the Ticks Away Be very wary of high grass. You can minimize your chances of exposure to ticks by following a few simple steps: • Stay toward the center of trails and away from brush as well as high grass • Tuck pant legs inside socks and/or wear gaiters • Wear light-colored clothing (makes spotting ticks easier) • Use insect repellant (at least 40 percent DEET) and don’t forget to spray your pants, socks plus your boots as well. • Search all those places that ticks love to hide: in your hair, under your arms, between your legs, behind the knees, and even in your belly button • Put the clothes you wore on your hike in the dryer, and tumble them on high heat. • Be sure to check your pets as well for ticks. It’s a good idea to contact your health care provider if you find any attached to you.

Farmers’ Markets Abound in the Region By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant
F
rom June strawberries to October’s pumpkins, the season’s farmers’ markets offer produce from a variety of vendors in one place. Many farmers’ markets include local arts and crafts, vended food, music and entertainment. You may also discover local jam, jelly, wine, maple syrup, honey and sauces sourced from local farms and enterprises. By shopping at these local markets, you’ll support the region’s farmers and snap up the freshest produce around. Help the farmers by bringing your own shopping totes or bags. Some may not provide bags. It also helps to bring small bills, since vendors may not have ample amounts of change, and not all market vendors accept checks or credit cards.

Strawberry Fields You-pick strawberries with a twist in Skaneateles By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant Strawberry Fields in Skaneateles offers an unusual agritourism experience. The farm opened in July 2009 with you-pick strawberries with a twist: they don’t grow in the ground. Forget about stooping and bending low to pick berries. Using the agriculture technique of hydroponics, the farm grows plants in pots of vermiculite and perlite. Since they place pots on vertical poles at a convenient picking height, they occupy a smaller footprint. The plants don’t compete with weeds or the bugs that typically feast on ground-based berries, so the farm doesn’t need herbicides or pesticides. The system also helps the plants grow larger fruit. With more than 20,000 ever bearing plants, the farm can accommodate its visitors with you-pick berries from June through frost. The farm isn’t certified organic, but Linda and Doug Eldred, the farm’s owners, use natural inputs

Strawberry Fields also raises herbs, tomatoes, raspberries and blueberries using the hydroponic method, available as you-pick or at the farm’s market. The Eldreds also sell Yancy’s Fancy Cheeses, honey, balsamic olive oils, New Hope Mills pancake mix, locally-made pottery, organic brown eggs, and their own label jams made with their fruit and other local fruits. “The strawberry, cherry and almond jam is hard to keep on the shelf,” Eldred said. “And then
there’s ‘Traffic Jam’ which is several kinds of jam mixed together.” The Eldreds are planning to erect another outbuilding this year to accommodate more guests. The farm is handicapped accessible, offering a you-pick experience for people with limited mobility. After frost, the farm closes down for a few weeks until the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. Then, the Eldreds reopen to sell Christmas trees, wreaths and center pieces. Sample free hot chocolate and cookies and fire-roasted chestnuts. The gift shop also offers holiday gift items. The farm is open weather-permitting. The Eldreds welcome group tours, with appointment and host parties with refreshments that include a chocolate fountain. May 7 is opening day. The farm is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Explore Fair Haven’s
Barrier Bar Park
By Susan Gateley Fair Haven’s Barrier Bar village park is unique. It is the only undeveloped barrier bar park on Lake Ontario with year-round access to a deep water channel and a walkable barrier beach. It’s one of the best places around for lake watching on stormy days or to catch a summer sunset. During the summer you can drive to within a few yards of the jetty for fishing access or boat watching. You can also access either the bay

waters or those of the lake. During the spring the bar’s brushy thickets and shrubby trees may yield an interesting migrant songbird sighting. On warm April days with a south wind you may be lucky enough to see hundreds of hawks moving overhead, soaring east along the lakeshore as they move around the lake during their spring migrations. The village has set out a few picnic tables on grassy spots but has left much of the bar in its natural state. A
couple of small ponds invite exploration by youngsters seeking a frog or tadpole. And spring, summer or fall is a great time for beach combing here. The barrier bar is made up of water washed pebbles and stones that have eroded out of the surrounding shoreline. Originally they were scraped up by the southward moving glaciers of the ice age, then deposited along the shore when the ice melted. They represent an unusual vari-
ety of stones because they come from many different areas to the north. You may find quartz crystals or ancient colorful pebbles from the Thousand Islands region. Dark stones from the Adirondacks with pockets of tiny reddish garnet crystals lie beside gray limestone from Canada’s shore. Often the limestone pebbles are filled with fossils. Then there’s driftwood in all its endless variations. The bar even features a tiny pocket of sand next to the jetty if you simply must dig a hole or build a castle. On windy days its wide beaches are great for kite flying. Sometimes when the surf’s up you may be entertained by kite surfers who favor the lightly used beach for their high-speed sport. And kayakers and paddle board enthusiasts can launch. There are no lifeguards and no swimming here. (You can go to the state park beach on the other side of the bay for safer swimming). But the price is right for dog walkers and stone skippers alike at the barrier bar. For more information on the barrier bar or other public lake shore beaches check out the “Edge Walker’s Guide to Lake Ontario Beach Combing” on sale at Rivers End Bookstore in Oswego or on line at www.spg. patchnpost.com/4/index.htm.

The Best of Upstate New York Fun in Your Own Backyard By Melissa Stefanec After a long and cold winter, getting outside is a reward. Trips and destinations are a lot of fun, but sometimes, your own backyard is the best place to be. It’s close, it’s inexpensive, and you can do whatever you want in it. Here are some creative ideas for kids and grown-up kids to enjoy that plot of land located just outside your windows.
Kiddy poolooza
Make your own s’mores bar
If you think a pizza bar is fun, try a s’mores bar. Put a tray out with different types of graham crackers and cookies. Put out different sorts of candy bars. Let people assemble their own version of s’mores and encourage them go up for seconds (and thirds).
Pools hold water, right? Not this year. Take a couple of inexpensive kiddy pools and fill them with unusual things. Make your own bubbles with dish soap, and make a gigantic bubble bath. Fill pools with sand or dirt and make an area that the kids are allowed to dig and bury rocks in. Fill a small kiddy pool with ice and stock it with summer beverages.
Obstacle course
Make your own pizza bar
Pet carnival
Barbecues are great, but pleasing all your guests can be tricky. Instead of the usual barbecue fare, make your own pizza party. Have a buffet with a selection of pizza toppings. Have guests pick their favorites and place them on top of any sort of flatbread, pita, naan or pre-cooked crust. Throw them on the grill for a couple of minutes and enjoy the results. Even the pickiest eaters will love this barbecue.
Lollipop field
Take balloons and attach them to balloon sticks, which can be found at party supply stores or online. Pepper your yard with the balloons and make a lollipop field. Place your child’s toys in the area and spend a magical afternoon in a make-believe land.
Children and adults can be very competitive, and an obstacle course is a great way to bring out people’s competitive nature. Set up your own obstacle course using items from a garage or shed. (For added fun, incorporate the hose). Give out token prizes for the fastest competitor and the best course-layout ideas.
Why should humans have all the fun? Set up a carnival for your beloved pets. They will get the fresh air and interaction they crave, and you will get to be creative and sneak in some quality time. Set up a doggy pool, kibble hunt or nature walk.
Camping
Camping in the great outdoors is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work. Packing, traveling and remembering everything can be a real challenge. Guess what happens when you are camping in your backyard and you forget something really important? You walk back in the house and get it. You still get a break from the ordinary, a breath of fresh air, and an easy retreat.

Unique Places to Visit in Oswego County By Sandra Scotta 1 — Osceola: Fiddler’s Hall of Fame: For a toe-tapping good time, attend a fiddling concert held every Sunday from spring to fall in Osceola then visit the adjacent museum with displays of fiddling artifacts and the Fiddler’s Hall of Fame. 2 — Williamstown: Case Stone Wall: It’s not as big as the Great Wall in China but the “Great Wall of Williamstown” is still amazing. The mortarless Case Wall was built by Jerome Increase Case in the early 1800s. It is said Case could drive a team of horses on top of the 12-foot wide wall. 3 — Oswego: Safe Haven: Oswego is the only place in the United States that accepted Jewish refugees during World War II. The Safe Haven Museum tells the stories of the 982 refugees from World War II who were allowed into the United States as “guests” of President Roosevelt in August 1944. 4 — Mexico: La Guerre d’Independence: You don’t have to go to the White House to see this impressive multi-colored woodblock wall scenic mural that depicts the Revolutionary War — made in France. Mexico High School has the only complete mural. The White House and Frances Tavern in NYC have a few panels. 5 — Texas: Silas Towne: Oswego County has its own “Paul Revere.” Buried on Spy Island, Silas Towne alerted the colonists at Fort Stanwix in Rome, Oneida County, that “The British are coming” so the fort was prepared and not overtaken. 6 — Oswego: Dr. Mary Walker: Dr. Walker was the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor for service during the Civil War. Her name was deleted from the Army

Medal of Honor Roll in 1917 and restored in 1977. Learn more about her at the Richardson-Bates House and see her recently unveiled statue in front of the Oswego Town Hall on County Route 7. 7 — Cleveland: Cleveland Glass Works: Glass making was the main industry in Cleveland between 1840 and1910. Cleveland is noted for its super fine sand that is used in the manufacturing of glass. Corning has used it to make telescopes. More information can be found at the Cleveland Historical Society Museum in the former St. James Church. 8 — Oswego Canal: Canal Boat Trip: For a different perspective on Oswego County, travel in the slow lane on the Oswego Canal. The canal can be used by private boaters. Mid-Lakes Navigation offers narrated tours several times during the summer. 9 — Brewerton: Block House: The fortification was built in 1759 to protect the all-important water route between the Great Lakes and Albany. The Oliver Stevens family lived on the top floor while the bottom floor severed as a trading post. It is open on weekends during the summer. 10 — Selkirk Lighthouse: The 1837 historic lighthouse is located at the mouth of the Salmon River and it is one of only four lighthouses in the United States that still has its original bird-cage lantern.

All About the Hoover-ball

The Best of Upstate New York
Game that resembles volleyball and a bit like tennis getting more popular By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant As its name denotes, former President Herbert Hoover was involved with the origins of Hoover-ball. Admiral Joel T. Boone, White House physician, developed the game to help keep the Commander-in-Chief fit. A journalist dubbed it Hoover-ball in honor of the president. It’s played somewhat like volleyball and a bit like tennis, with teams conveying a ball across a net to each other. But instead of keeping a volleyball up in the air through digging, setting and spiking, the teams catch
26 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2015
and toss a light, soft medicine ball back and forth. Personal trainers often use medicine balls to help strengthen and tone core muscles and the upper body. Hoover-ball accomplishes the same, and adds agility and footwork to the workout. Plus, the camaraderie and strategy of the game keeps the workout interesting. If you want to try out Hooverball, all you need is a soft-cover kettle ball, volleyball net and ground markings like those of a tennis court. Then follow the rules from www. hooverassociation.org:
The court is 66 feet by 30 feet. A 4-to-6-pound medicine ball and 8-foot volleyball net are used. Teams consist of two to four players. (For the national championships, three-player teams will be used. Each team may have one or two substitutes) Scoring is exactly like tennis: love-15-30-40-(deuce, ad-in, ad-out)game. Teams play best-of-five or bestof-seven games. Points are scored when a team: fails to catch the return, fails to return the ball across the net, returns the ball out of bounds, fails to return the ball
Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York
to the proper court area. The ball is served from the back line. The serve is rotated among one team until the game is won. Teams alternate serving after each game. Teams change courts after every two games. The ball must be caught on the fly and immediately returned from the point it was caught. There is no running with the ball or passing to teammates. Each team’s court is divided in half. A ball caught in the front half of your court must be returned to the back half of your opponent’s court. This prevents spiking. If the ball doesn’t reach the back court, the opponent is awarded the point. Balls caught must be played. The mid-court line is part of the front court. A ball that hits the out-of-bounds line is a good return. A player who catches the ball outof-bounds, or is carried out-of-bounds by the force of the ball, may return in-bounds before the return. A ball that hits the net on its way over is a live ball. (If it was thrown from the front court, it must reach the opponents back court to be good.) Teams may substitute freely at dead ball situations. Good sportsmanship is required. Points in question should be played over.

Fun on the Farm Lives Up to Its Name Event in Ontario County slated for Sept. 26. More than 6,000 people visit By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant Many agritourism events and tours seem contrived and a little too tidy. But Fun on the Farm, presented by Ontario County Farm Bureau, offers a realistic farm tour. Hosted every odd-numbered year by a different Ontario County-based farm, Fun on the Farm is not a place to wear flip flops. The hosting farms operate daily as working farms; however, during the one-day event, as many as 6,000 people pour onto their acres.
“It’s free, fun and we have educational opportunities no matter how old you are,” said Julie Maslyn, promotion and education chairwoman for Ontario County Farm Bureau. “It’s a look at how a large dairy farm is run. Plus, we have examples of other farm animals and lots of free samples.” Usually a barn, machine shed or other outbuilding provides shelter for vended refreshments and a temporary tent village houses exhibits from
farm-based organizations, including as New York Farm Bureau, 4-H and vendors selling products such as maple syrup, farm insurance, and more. Kids can try free children’s games, such as sack races, cabbage bowling, pedal tractor course, bean bag toss and ring toss, and attractions like craft tables and the farm animal petting zoo. Attendees of all ages flock to the tractor-drawn hayride tour of the farm’s buildings and grounds, in-

El-Vi Farms, a 1,400-head dairy straddling Newark and Phelps, hosted the last event in 2013, the 15th annual Fun on the Farm. Beef Up Your Beach Bag
The Best of Upstate New York
By Melissa Stefanec
M
any of us head to the beach this time of the year. Beaches are a lot of fun, but executing a beach outing can be a lot of hard work. With a little prior planning, a trip to the beach is easier to enjoy. Here are some tips and tricks for getting the most out of your fun in the sun.
Ditch the bag (and welcome the tote)
It’s time to change the concept of a beach bag. Bags are typically cloth and prone to staining. Consider a plastic or vinyl beach tote. Something that can stand up to sand and water is ideal. You can find plastic, flexible totes with carrying handles at many stores. They are easy to clean and sturdier than a bag. A reusable shopping bag made of vinyl is another option. They are cheap and easier to clean.
Don’t bring the kitchen sink along for the ride
Overpacking makes more work on the front and back end of your trip. Don’t bring everything and the kitchen sink. Keep your tote packed with must-haves and don’t go overboard. Spend your valuable time relaxing, not packing and unpacking.
Pack once, and forget about it
MAKE
your
World
This summer, Stan Munro is bringing Toothpick World back in a big way. We’re pairing that with hand-carved boats made by an Italian immigrant. And we’re holding a contest for you to make your own world our of toothpicks, wood, K’NEX®, anything.

There are some items that have to go in a beach bag. Buy doubles of those items. Double up on sunscreen, lip balm, cleansing wipes, hair ties, pocket money, bug spray and anything else you deem to be a necessity. Double bag it in a re-sealable plastic baggie and keep it in your beach bag. Don’t take that bag out for other purposes and be sure to restock items when you run out. Keep a couple of bottles of water or juice boxes in the tote.
Rethink the blanket
Many of us are in the habit of using an old, bulky blanket at the beach. It’s time to trade up. There are a variety of thin, packable blankets on the market today. Some of them fold up to about the size of a book. Spending $10 to $25 will free up a lot of space in your bag and vehicle. Most of these packable blankets are also easier to clean than their old-school counterparts.
Contain the toys
If beach toys are going to be part of your afternoon, make sure they are contained. You can buy beach toys in a plastic basket, or you can use a small, round laundry basket and attach a rope handle. Pick-up and wash-off will be a breeze.

Better... Again and Again Novelis gives you another reason to love your car – vehicles made with aluminum are now better for the environment. Light, strong and 100% recyclable, Novelis aluminum is helping vehicles go farther on a gallon of gas while still providing outstanding safety and performance. And then, at the end of their lives, we help turn them back into new vehicles, protecting the environment during their use… and after. We call that a “continuous loop” – aluminum created from recycled material, engineered for superior performance and then recycled again to create the next great vehicle. Better for you, better for the planet. With Novelis, the cars you love are better from beginning to end, and then again. Novelis.com TM Not just aluminum, Novelis Aluminum.

When the army decided to build a depot in Seneca County in 1941, dozens of families were given only days to vacate the homes they loved and land they had farmed for generations. The depot provided vital jobs for residents, but it also continued to cause controversy even after it was established—all while providing critical support for the army. Since the base closed in 2000, the community has grappled with what to do with the property, including protecting the area population of white deer. Walter Gable has been the Seneca County Historian since August 2003. Carolyn Zogg was appointed director of the Seneca Falls Historical Society and its Becker House Museum. Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York
Horseback Riding in CNY By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant If you and your horse are eager to hit the trails, why not try some new venues this season? The 26-mile Oswego County Recreation Trail includes a western and eastern portion that follows the former path of the New York Ontario & Western Railroad. Enjoy the nostalgia of using original railroad bridges that still cross many of the streams along the trail. Access parking at County Route 6 in Volney; Toad Harbor Road in West Monroe or North Street in Cleveland. The Winona State Forest Recreation Area borders southern Jefferson County and northern Oswego County. Its 9,233 acres include plenty of horseback riding opportunities. Since its 30 trails are designated for multiple use, check www.dec.ny.gov/ lands/8072.html and watch for signs to know where you may ride. Visit www. winonaforest.com/directions.html for directions and where you may park. Barbara Bordonaro, a resident of Port Byron, Cayuga County, likes the trails at the Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management
Area (formally known as Howland Island Wildlife Management Area) “because of all the crisscrossed paths, which make it feel like it’s a lot bigger than it actually is,” she said. “The terrain is varying and the scenery is just beautiful.” She compared one section of the woods as rivaling scenes from a “Lord of the Rings” movie. The trail may be accessed in Savannah. “It’s very quiet and secluded, yet it’s not terribly uncommon to run into hikers,” Bordonaro added. The 3,600-acre area includes Howland Island (3,100 acres), Bluff Point Unit (388 acres) and WayCay (114 acres). To access the trail, take Thruway exit 40 at Weedsport and take Route 38 to Port Byron. Drive two miles north to Howland Island Road. Bordonaro also likes the Cayuga County trail that links Cato and Fair Haven, accessible at the Cato town building. “That makes it a nice place to park and unload [the trailer],” Bordonaro said. The shady, 14-mile trail winds among farmland,

woods and marshlands, which means a rider can observe many different kinds of birds, wildlife and plants along the way, and experience various types of terrain. Ride CNY’s trails safely. Make sure your horse is welcome before you head out because some trails include terrain not suitable for riding. The trail’s web-
site and signage should indicate where riding is safe. Don’t ride public trails on a green horse. Doing so can endanger the animal and others. Stay on the designated trails. Pass others carefully and report any prohibited trail use to the park’s authority. Common courtesy can help keep parks enjoyable for all uses.
