Be Thrifty, But Have Fun! Here are ways to preserve your budget and still enjoy the season By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

A

t last! The weather’s great and it’s time to get out there and enjoy all the terrific events and venues Central New York has to offer. Don’t let a tight budget spoil your fun this season. With a little planning, you and your family can save money and still enjoy all the outdoor festivities and fun. Advance sale tickets often provide great savings such as discounted prices and buy-one-get-one-free deals. Many grocery stores sell these. Check out the events’ websites to find where you can save. The sites may also offer printable or Smartphone-accessible discounts on food and activities. Your company may have corporate discounts available to employees because of group rates. Ask at the human resources department. If these discounts aren’t available, form your own group to snag a great deal. If you plan on attending more than once, season tickets or ones good for multiple days may save a few bucks. Don’t assume you need premium tickets to an event unless you’ve attended before and know it’s what you really want. Mystery shopping companies sometimes offer free admission tickets and meals. Try Kern Scheduling (www. sassieshop.com/2kern/index.norm. php), Gap Busters, (www.gapbuster. com) and Cyber Shoppers (www. cybershoppersonline.com). Prepare for the day’s needs. Buying sunglasses, sun block or bug repellent at an event will cost a bundle. It may pay to toss a change of clothes and Continued on page 70

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York

Staycationing in Upstate Close-to-home, mini vacation ideas abound By Melissa Stefanec

A

s your gas and grocery bills and all your expenses seem to be going up, it’s easy to dismiss a vacation as unnecessary. However, you probably deserve a getaway more than ever with all these mounting financial stresses. The trick is to take a shorter vacation and stay local. You have to learn to be a tourist in your own neck of the woods. If you stay local and limit yourself to day trips or overnights, you will save yourself money and get the vacation you deserve. Best of all, you’ll arrive back to work refreshed and without the ‘I need a vacation from my vacation’ feeling. Here are some close-tohome, mini-vacation ideas waiting to be experienced. Zoos/Petting Zoos — Who doesn’t like animals? Whether you are 4 or 74, viewing and interacting with animals is a great stress reliever. A few 50-cent handfuls of corn can buy a lot of smiles. Most zoos let you bring in coolers or lunch bags so you can pack a picnic lunch and bring your own snacks and drinks. Many zoos also offer family or seasonal passes at a discount price. That means you can take a couple of weekends and revisit your favorite friends. Water Parks — A hot day demands water refreshment. Water parks have a little something for everyone. Go down your favorite slide five times or just float in a tube at the pool. Most parks let you bring in food and beverages, which will

14 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2011

save you money. Wine Tour — Living near the Finger Lakes has a lot of advantages. Most notably is the proximity to some of the best wines in the world. Jump in a car and make your own tour or take a guided tour with a safe driver. There are events over the season with chocolate, cheese and other food pairings. There are also a lot of bed and breakfasts to offer rest to a weary wine traveler. Visit www.fingerlakeswinecountry. com for more info. Camping — Taking the family out in nature and staying in tents is reminiscent of simpler (and cheaper) times. S’mores by the campfire and hotdogs on a stick are sure to satisfy. Most New York state park campsites are available for about $20 a night and offer an easy getaway (www. nysparks.com/camping/). Fishing — Remember the thrill of reeling in your first 4-ounce sunfish? Relive the magic or share it with someone new and head out for a day of fishing. You can relax away a vacation’s day for the cost of a few bobbers and a couple of containers of worms. Make sure to bring a camera. For a list of public access points visit www.fishny.com/map. Historical Sites — The New York state park system (www. nysparks.com/historic-sites/) has a list of historic sites throughout the state. Whether you want to walk a battlefield, take a trip back to colonial times or learn more about your very own town, historic sites offer a

wealth of knowledge that is hard to find anywhere else. Sporting Event — The big games can get expensive, but a local team’s tickets can usually be purchased for a reasonable price. Go see your local franchise or go to a college sporting event. Have a tailgate picnic in the parking lot and save yourself money on concession food and drink. Visit Family/Friends — A lot of us are always putting off visiting out-of-the-area family and friends. Make good on those promises and take the road trip this summer. Once you are there you get free lodging and the opportunity to enjoy a place that is exotic for you. Next summer have that person to your area and enjoy showing him or her around. Point of Interest Road Trip — Are you an avid golfer, video gamer or other hobbyist? Take your passion and turn it into a road trip. Map out an area and visit all the stores, courses or other points of interest that are part of your hobby. If you love baked goods, visit and sample from multiple bakeries. If you love billiards, go to multiple pool halls. It doesn’t have to be fancy; it just has to be fun. Fall Harvest Festival — There are fall festivals all over Upstate New York. Most come complete with animals, displays, activities and lots of food. Enjoy apples, cider, wines, cheeses, dips, chutneys and other fall favorites. The whole family will enjoy the break.

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York

Chill Out! Cool off this season at regional water parks By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

A

s the temperature climbs, make a splash at any of the area’s water parks to keep cool this summer. All of these are within an easy day trip’s drive. Or, consider taking your vacation at any of the water park resorts. You’ll save a bundle on gas and have a blast. • Between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, Darien Lake Water Park in Darien Center (www.godarienlake. com) is part of a 360-acre resort that also includes a theme park, hotel, RV rental site and campground. As the Empire State’s largest theme park and resort, its 100 attractions will surely offer something for everyone to enjoy, even if they aren’t so fond of water rides. And even mermaid wannabes need a break occasionally. Darien Lake’s theme park rides range from its six roller coasters to the “Slingshot” bungee suspension ride to smaller, carnival-style rides for younger kids. Summer 2011 attractions include Thomas & Friends Full Steam Ahead Live show, Sea Lion Splash exhibit, Laserblast light display and more. Inpark concerts will feature “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks and Nickelodeon star Miranda Cosgrove. For water fun, Darien Lake’s Barracuda Bay (included with the cost of general admission) expanded last summer, adding a new waterslide complex, a lazy river ride and a wading pool for younger children.

16 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2011

You can also zip down raft rides and slides and, in “Hook’s Lagoon,” drench each other with tipping buckets, among other hands-on play features. Since the park offers lodging and both water and non-water attractions all included with one admission price, it’s a vacation destination for a summer getaway. The park is open May through September. Contact the park for admission prices and hours at 585.599.2211 or www.godarienlake. com. • Seabreeze Park in Rochester (www.seabreeze.com) was named for its location near Lake Ontario. Its Victorian theme attests its status as the nation’s fourth-oldest operating amusement park. Seabreeze offers 40 acres of theme park rides, an arcade, carnival games, the Carousel Museum and Raging Rivers Waterpark. The water park includes a lazy river, wave pool, tube slides, raft slides and designated places for children, including an interactive play area. Seabreeze Park is open May through September. For more information, contact the park at 585.323.1900 or www.seabreeze.com. • Roseland Waterpark in Canandaigua offers 56 acres of fun: a wave pool, family oriented raft rides, a few slides, tube slides and, for younger children, an interactive water play area. Feeling competitive? The “Water War” area lets you bombard friends

with water balloons for $2 a bucketful. After you’ve toweled off, you can play sand volleyball and bocce ball. Check the website for special events all summer long, including “Dunk Tank with the Lifeguards”, cartoon caricatures, “The Magic Guy”, free Zumba class on Fridays, Watkins Glen Tour Car and Pit Stop Challenge, Renaissance Day, acoustic guitarist Shawn Welch, and more. Roseland is open June through September. For more information, contact the park at 585.396.2000 or www.roselandwaterpark.com. • When it comes to the biggest sized water park, nothing in the state tops Enchanted Water Safari in Old Forge. The 60-acre amusement park is the cool place to be on any hot summer day. Its 31 attractions include a wave pool, lazy rivers, family pool and family raft rides. Challenge your friends to grab a mat and race on any of the several five-lane tube slides or go solo on body slides. Younger children will love the “Kid Wash” and three-story play area. For toddlers, the “Pygmy Pond” and “Tadpole Hole” mini-slides will bring hours of fun. Enchanted Forrest also features a few carnival-style rides, a petting zoo, arcade, circus shows and a park museum. Next door, Calypso’s Cove Family Fun Center offers an arcade, miniature golf, rock climbing wall,

go-karts, and bumper boats. Enchanted Forest is open June through September. For more information, contact the park at 315.369.6145 or www.watersafari.com. • Lightning storms won’t end the fun at The Great Escape Lodge and Indoor Waterpark near Lake George (www.sixflagsgreatescapelodge. com), which offers 38,000 square feet of splashing adventure. It includes a multi-level interactive play area, lazy river ride, a rapid river ride, tube rides, surfing, kiddie pool, and (for those 18 and older) a hot tub. Because the water park is part of the lodge, which also includes dining, an arcade and fitness center, you can plan an entire weekend getaway that doesn’t involve a lot of driving around once you get there. For more information, contact the resort at 518-824-6060 or www. sixflagsgreatescapelodge.com. • Thunder Island Family Entertainment Park in Fulton (www.thunder-island.com) offers several tunnel rides, tube slides, and a kids’ river for easy-going floating. For dry fun, try their go-karts and jungle-themed miniature golf course. Thunder Island is open June through September. For more information, contact the park

Chill out this summer at an area water park such as Enchanted Forest Water Safari in Old Forge. at 315-598-8016 or www.thunder-island.com. The website also features coupons. • Want more chances to get wet in Central New York? Just wait. Construction on the Maya Indoor Water Park (www.themayaexperience. com) in Syracuse is slated to begin in 2012.

Thunder Island Family Entertainment Park in Fulton is a great option this season — and it’s close to home.

Plan ahead for water park fun.

Call to ensure the park is open and to verify hours, admission prices, and park policies regarding food. Some do not permit coolers inside but allow picnicking in designated areas, for example. Keep close watch of children. Even if they are good swimmers and there are lifeguards on duty, drowning accidents can happen in a moment. If you want to visit a variety of parks and a season pass won’t save you any money, check group rates and get friends and neighbors to help you swing a better deal. Wear comfortable clothing that dries quickly. Parks usually require you to change into street clothing before leaving the water park area and going to a game or eating area. Bring along a towel, water-resistant sunscreen (reapply at least every two hours and after towel drying), sunglasses, broad-brimmed hat or visor, non-skid water shoes, swimsuit and regular walking shoes.

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York Chimney Bluffs’ dramatic landscape contrasts the lulling waves of Lake Ontario.

The Wonders of Wolcott Chimney Bluffs, Wolcott Falls Parks offer spectacular views By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

C

himney Bluffs State Park offers a geological wonder. Tucked along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario just west of Wolcott, the park features columns of rock and sand that spike up to 150 feet high, contrasted by swooping dunes. The barren, lunar-like landscape is surreal considering the forest fringing the top of the bluffs. The park’s two trails are each a mile long and run parallel to each other and the shoreline of Lake Ontario. The lower trail lies along the shore and the upper trail is through the forest overlooking the bluffs. The trails connect at both ends. The

20 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2011

western end includes a paved parking lot, picnic area, grassy lawns, grills and restrooms. The eastern trailhead was left natural and offers limited parking. Wear your hiking shoes to walk these trails. This is no place for flipflops or slippery-soled shoes. The trails are minimally maintained so expect exposed tree roots, jutting rocks and uneven terrain on the upper trail and a rocky beach strewn with driftwood on the lower trail. The trails will not accommodate a wheelchair or stroller. Keep in mind that the bluffs can easily give way and result in a fall.

Be careful along the edge and hold little ones’ hands. Leashed dogs are permitted in the park, but keep them close by so they don’t take a tumble over the cliffs. Expect the temperature to feel a little cooler along the shoreline. In early spring or late fall, this could warrant a light jacket. Bring along your camera to take breathtaking photos. If you visit next year and take photos from the same vantage points, you’ll find that the bluffs will have changed by then. The bluffs erode one to five feet annually because of the erosion of wind and water.

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York On the forest trail, you’ll likely see ferns, wild grapevine, trillium, jackin-the-pulpit, blue cohosh, and colt’s foot, among other plant life. Pack a picnic to enjoy at the park before you head home, or patronize a local restaurant. Instead of crossing Ridge Road to go back to state Route 104, turn east onto Ridge Road to visit Mill’s Diner. It features fun ‘50s décor, an impressively sized menu of sandwiches, baked goods, and family friendly fare. Mill’s boasts many flavors of soft and hard ice cream and treats featuring farm-fresh fruit from the Mill’s Farm on site. Mills’ farm stand also sells fruit, gifts, jelly, and more. As you enter the village of Wolcott on Ridge Road from the west, turn left onto West Port Bay Road to enjoy a cone, burger, hot dog or sandwich al fresco at one of the picnic tables at Brooks, Inc. The family-owned ice cream stand is one of the newer ones in Wolcott. On the village’s main square, Peter’s New York Pizzeria and Mark’s Pizza are local favorites with take-out or eat-in available. They each sell pizza by the pie or slice, along with other Italian favorites. If you turn south at the stoplight into New Hartford, you’ll find the Village Restaurant on the left and China King on the right. The Village Restaurant offers shaded seating for its ice cream window and indoor dining with typical small town diner fare. Also in New Hartford, China King provides limited seating, but allows takeouts and serves a reasonably priced, broad selection of Americanized Chinese food. The lunch menu is an especially good deal with heaping portions for a reduced price. You can also eat at the picnic tables at Northup Park adjacent to the restaurant. Look for the bandstand. Fall for it — Another pleasant little park in the village, Wolcott

Wolcott Falls Park, not far from Chimney Bluffs, offers a pleasant view of the falls, picnic pavilion and playground. Falls Park, is just off Oswego Street. Follow Main Street east and turn left onto Oswego near Palace Theater. Wolcott Falls Park will be on the left. At the upper level of the park, enjoy the overlook of the falls, picnic pavilion and playground. At the west end of the park, follow a short, steep trail through the woods to enter the bottom level of the park at the base of the falls. Wolcott Falls Park offers restroom facilities. Chimney Bluffs and Wolcott Falls parks are open dawn to dusk. To get to Chimney Bluffs, take state Route 104 West to Lake Bluff Road. Turn right (north) onto Lake Bluff Road. Lake Bluff Road becomes Garner Road. Look for signs. Want to stay in the area longer?

Check out Lake Bluff Campground (lakebluffcampground.com, 315-5874517) for tent or RV camping near Chimney Bluffs. Want more to do in Wolcott? Attend a seasonal festival in the Northup Park/Main Street areas. In mid-June, the village offers the sweet flavors of Strawberry Festival. In August, the park hosts the Wine & Jazz Festival, the 20th Annual Wolcott Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce Car & Cycle Show, and Annual Community Sidewalk and Yard Sales. September brings the Sportsman Show with vendors presenting all kinds of equipment for outdoorsmen. Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York Disc Golfing: Game Getting Popular By Melissa Stefanec

I

f you’ve recently driven through a park, you might have noticed the addition of some baskets with chains above them and a number on top. These baskets may look a little strange, but they are used by disc golfers. Disc golf, which is growing in popularity with each passing season, is also referred to as frolf and frisbee golf and it is taking nature lovers by storm. Disc golf is enjoyed by amateurs and professionals. The sport actually has a professional organization dedicated to it called the Professional Disc Golf Association (PGDA). Although some people enjoy the sport on make-shift courses in their back yards, there are other people who play professionally and compete in world championships. In fact, this year’s PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships is being held at the end of July in Rochester. Adam Kraebel is one Central

New Yorker who picked up the sport and hasn’t been able to put it down. He started playing three years ago and gets out at least three times a week, weather permitting. He plays in the snow, cold and rain and doesn’t let a lot keep him off the course. He often ends up lengthening his season to eleven months per year. Frolf is enjoyed by a large demographic of people and he says a lot of the sport’s appeal lies in the fact it allows the player be closer to nature and doesn’t cost a lot. “Anybody who likes to take a hike in the woods will enjoy playing and because it’s so cheap, you can practice up and develop your game in a short amount of time,” said Kraebel. “This is a big bonus if you’re interested in competing in tournaments.” How to Play — Disc golf is played much like regular golf. There are tee boxes and players shoot their discs with the end goal of sinking the disc

Adam Kraebel playing disc golfing at Green Lakes State Park near Syracuse.

22 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2011

into the basket. The basket is typically metal and has chains connected to it to help the disc drop into the basket. Each hole has a par. The courses may be in wide open fields or be wound through woodland trails. Natural features such as trees, creeks and tall grasses replace man-made sand traps and roughs. The goal of the game is the same as traditional golf; you want to finish with the lowest score. Most courses have either nine or 18 holes. Getting Started — People who want to learn to play can visit the PDGA website for rules, tutorials, advice and a list of courses in their area. Discs can be purchased online or at most sporting goods stores. Although players can use just one disc, as people progress in the sport they start incorporating more discs in different shapes and weights. Most dedicated players have at least three discs: a distance driver, a mid-range disc and a putter. Harnessing its Appeal — People who play disc golf are typically outdoorsy people who love and respect nature. Players are encouraged to respect nature on the courses they play on. They share courses with animals, trees, children and people who are on various skill levels. Although the sport is played by professionals, most players just head out to enjoy nature and make improvements to their personal game. It’s low cost and low stress features are appealing to a growing number of people. Although Kraebel wants to improve his game, at the end of the day his passion for the sport is much simpler than that. “It’s a walk in the wilderness. It doesn’t get any better than that. It’s great exercise. The culture of the game is very laid back and relaxing. Figuring out your line to the target is often challenging and sometimes you have to be creative with your shots. It’s a great game. Give it a try”

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York ‘I’m Bored’ No More. How to Keep Kids Busy Creative projects, activities add zest to fun By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

A

re you hearing “I’m bored!” from your kids yet? Fortunately, keeping the kids busy during summer break is lots of fun for everyone. Try these ideas in the weeks ahead. • Volunteer to help a cause your family cares about. Besides aiding someone in need, your children will learn lifelong lessons about empathy and giving. If volunteering on a regular basis won’t work with your schedules or you’re not sure where to start, ask if you can pitch in “just this once” at your church, a civic organization or charitable group. Nursing homes warmly welcome young visitors if you call in advance. Picking up litter in your neighborhood also shows you care about your town. . • Tackle a project together. Cleaning out the garage may not seem like much fun to the kids, but set a goal and offer a reward, such as, “if we get this done by 4, we’ll order pizza and rent a movie.” Working with them instead of sending them off by themselves will also help the job get done. • Vacation in your hometown. Have you ever wondered about that park you pass by or the historical site in your neighborhood? Research it online or pick up brochures to plan and then visit it. You’ll be surprised at what lies just beyond your own back yard. Take along the camera and pick up a brochure so

you can visit like a tourist. • Play treasure hunt. For younger children, it could include finding—and returning—a few simple things such as, “find something blue, something wet and also something fuzzy.” For older children, challenge them to find a list of more complex items, such as a five-inch long pinecone, an acorn, a rock larger than a half-dollar, and a ladybug (release it when the game is over). Outfit your oldest kids with cameras to take pictures of the items on their list. Whoever completes his list first wins. • Get wet. Get into swimsuits, get outside and let the water fly! Fill up the squirt guns, turn on the garden hose and make water balloons for cool fun. • Camp out in the back yard. Even if it’s not overnight camping, it’s fun to set up the tent (or make your own with blankets) and rough it for a few hours with no electronics. Help the kids fix “camp foods” for lunch, like pork and beans, hotdogs and S’mores to eat outside. • Rainy days? Don’t let them dampen your fun. Get cooking with the kids. Let them have whatever they want as long as they help you shop for the ingredients and make it. Look through the cookbooks for something interesting. Let them choose a three-course meal: appetizer, soup and main dish, even if they don’t really coordinate well.

Remember, it’s all about learning and having a good time, not making the cover of “Bon Appetit.” Regardless of how it turns out, it will be a memorable meal. • Strut your stuff. Have the kids stage a fashion show with you and your spouse as the models. Let them put together clothing ensembles from any closet in the house and fix their hair and make-up. Take plenty of pictures of their outrageous getups for a hilarious slideshow later. • Get crafty. Break out whatever craft supplies you have on hand and raid the recycle bin to challenge the kids to make a useful or decorative object without spending anything or telling each other what they’re planning. Give them a deadline to help spur them into action. Or stop by a craft store and let each child pick out supplies for starting a new hobby. Start small in case they lose interest quickly. • Dig into history. Help the kids interview their grandparents (or other older adults) on what things were like in the old days. They will be surprised about what was different and what has remained the same. Have them compile a list of questions about daily life, such as “What did you eat for breakfast when you were my age?” “What was your favorite outfit?” and “What did you do for fun during the summer?” Perhaps they’ll get a few ideas for making more summer fun for themselves.

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York Campfire: A Fun Part of Outdoor Living By Melissa Stefanec

W

hen camping, hiking or relaxing outdoors, a campfire is synonymous with outdoor living. A campfire is relaxing, alluring, practical and fun. It’s also a great and delicious way to cook. Almost anything can be cooked on a campfire if you have the right tools and methods. Meat, grains, vegetables and fruit can all be enjoyed courtesy of a campfire. Here are some ways to cook on a fire and some ideas of what to include in a fire-cooked feast.

Cooking Methods

Stick — Cooking on a stick is oldfashioned and nostalgic. To keep the stick from burning, soak it in water for 15 minutes before cooking with it. A green stick (one you cut off a tree as opposed to finding on the ground) will be better because it will burn less. A green stick will have a green layer instead of a brown layer beneath the bark. Choose a long stick so you can stand back from the fire and shave it down to a pointed end to stab your food and keep it secure. Grate — A grill grate is a great thing to have at a fire. Make sure it is

24 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2011

balanced on both ends by something sturdy and placed just over the flames of the fire. You can use rock, logs or other items for balancing. With a grill grate on top, a campfire is almost like your gas grill at home but with a better flavor. Pans — A frying pan is a great addition to bring along to the campfire. Make sure you choose one with a long handle and bring along pot holders. If you are hanging onto the pan it can get hot. If you put it on the grate the handle will get hot. Protect yourself. Cook in the pan just like you would on the stovetop. In the coals — Coals are just as important to campfire cooking as the flames. You can cook in the coals while your fire is burning. To cook in the coals you want to make sure your food is tightly sealed in heavy duty aluminum foil so no ashes or coals can enter your meal. Make sure food is placed in the middle of the coals so hot coals completely surround your food. Remove food with tongs and allow it to cool so you don’t burn yourself when unwrapping. Pie Iron — A pie iron is a sort of sandwich maker that comes in aluminum or cast iron. It consists of two metal pieces about the size of a slice of bread that are hinged together with long handles on the ends. You put two pieces of buttered bread in and fill with savory or sweet fillings. You can also use biscuit, pizza or other dough in place of bread. Place the pie iron in hot coals and turn evenly. Check your creation every 3-5 minutes. Whatever you are cooking is done when it’s

golden brown on both sides. Essential tools — Depending on your cooking method, you will need some implements. Stick-cooking only requires a knife. For cooking in coals you will need heavy duty aluminum foil and tongs or some other implement to get your dinner out of hot coals. A pot holder can also save some burns. A large spoon and some salt and pepper also make things a little easier and tastier.

What to Cook

Hotdog — One the campfire’s most versatile foods, a hot dog can be cooked on a stick, in a pan, on a grate or in the coals. Marshmallows — Why use anything other than a stick? Just remember, if it catches fire, don’t shake the stick. Either wait for it to burn off or carefully blow on it. Shish kebab — You need a grate to turn this grill-side favorite into a fireside favorite. Fish — Fishing and a campfire go hand in hand. Clean and filet your fish and put the filets in foil. Squeeze on fresh lemon juice to protect the meat and flavor. Cook in the coals until flakey and enjoy. Corn — This perfect campfire food needs no implements. Keep the corn in the husk and give it a quick soak in the water. Place in the coals until kernels are soft and remove the husk. Baked potato — Wrap it in aluminum foil place it in coals. Leave it in for about 40 minutes. It will yield to pressure when it is done. Baked apple — Fireside apples are like nature’s apple pie. Take an apple and cut a hole in the middle to remove the core and seeds. Fill with brown sugar and cinnamon (and a little butter if you have it). Wrap the apple in foil and make sure it stays top side up. Place in the coals for 1011 minutes.

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York Being prepared will enhance your fishing trip

Fish On!

By Brandon Smith

U

pstate New York has some of the most diverse fishing opportunities in all of North America.During the summer and fall, the difference between catching a walleye, salmon, largemouth bass, trout or black crappie can be as simple as a short drive, or reaching a little deeper into the tackle box. So be adventurous, explore and see what your local waters have to offer! Be prepared — Before going in search of your next meal or trophy, it helps to know what kind of fish you feel like catching. After all, we are surrounded by water with a vast variety of fish to choose from. The Internet is a great resource for finding fish reports and directions to the “hot bite,” as well as tips on what baits and techniques are bringing in the fish of your choice. When I’m going to a brand new fishing spot, I try to find multiple resources for that area to identify the trends. If three different places say I need to be using a green lure, you can bet I’m bringing more than one green offering. But you can’t just bring a couple green lures; this is an adventure! Along with the locally recommended tackle, bring some other odds and ends. The conditions may change once you arrive, so be prepared to adapt. Bring a digital camera and before you leave home make sure you have saved your pictures to your computer and clear the memory card. When you catch a beautiful fish,

you will absolutely kick yourself if you have to fumble with the camera to delete pictures to make room. Besides, if you’re exploring new territory, you’re bound to find picture-worthy landscape as you connect with nature. Also, put your camera in a plastic sandwich bag in case you get wet. Pack a lunch in a cooler with ice. This not only saves you from having to spend money on food, but also prevents you from having to leave hungry fish to feed a hungry com-

panion. Never leave fish while they’re biting! You can still grab a bite to eat on the road; just don’t make that your only option. The ice in the cooler will also be handy if you plan to keep any fish, as they always taste best when kept continuously cold. Did you bring bug spray? Remember, fish aren’t the only things that bite. Ask for directions — When I arrive to the fishing spot, I might ask Continued on page 75

the

Oswego area

The county’s biggest city, also named Oswego, is home to both SUNY Oswego and the popular summer celebration Harborfest. The city is divided nearly in half by the Oswego River, a feature that contributed greatly to its growth as a manufacturing and shipping port city. It currently is the largest port settlement directly on the American shore of Lake Ontario. The city is home to museums, an internationally famous speedway, and beautiful waterfront parks.

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York A Medieval Cottage in the Woods By Sandra Scott

C

asey’s Cottage, a carriage house turned into an 11th Century English manor house, is truly a gem. West of the cottage across the lush lawns of Mexico Point Park is the stone foundation of what was the Mexico Point Club that was destroyed in a fire in the 1950s. Before the advent of the automobile, guests were met at the train station in Mexico and brought to the club by a horsedrawn carriage. When horses were no longer necessary the carriage house was transformed into Casey’s Cottage by two close friends, Dr. William C. Casey and Severin Bischof. Casey provided the means and Bischof provided the designs. “The cottage was a work of love and a place of beauty where friends enjoyed companionship and good conversation,” recalled John Bischof, the artist’s son. Casey was a professor at Columbia University for 28 years. His lectures attracted standing-room-only crowds. Year after year, graduating students voted his courses the “most valuable during their four years.” Casey spent his summers at the Mexico Point Club and during the 1930’s began work on the threestory carriage house. In 1928, when Bischof was an art student at Syracuse University, he met Casey. It was the beginning of a long and creative friendship. Born in Germany, Bischof was a master painter who had apprenticed in Germany where he restored religious paintings and worked in the great cathedrals in Europe. It is estimated that 79,000 manhours went into the building’s reno-

vation and it was never completed. The English manor house has many unique features including the porch that was added to create a moat effect with a mariner’s compass embedded in the concrete step. The moat’s windows are hand-crafted leaded stained glass. The L-shaped great hall boasts a magnificent fireplace complete with chains for the hounds in keeping with the era. Casey invented a heatilator, some say before it was manufactured in Syracuse. Small arched stainedglass windows are set in larger wooden windows both of which open to let in the cool lake breeze. The ceilings are carved with old English and Gaelic quotes and gracing the walls are extensive life-sized carvings of Medieval scenes created by Severin Bischof. The thickly-carpeted stairs lead to the bedrooms, balcony, and chapel. Each bedroom has bunks, a cupboard, a bookshelf, and a tiny closet. The bedrooms lead from one to the other and open into the hall. The windows once were covered with sateen draperies and the bunks with satin coverlets. In the chapel, Casey kept a candle lit as a memorial to his mother, and often played organ music which resounded throughout the park. Casey continued to visit the cottage, when his health permitted, until his death in 1978. In 1982, Severin Bischof’s ashes were placed by his son, John, at the edge of the English-style garden that was located where the river and land met in back of the cottage. Once you arrive, check the program, map or ticket for more coupons. Food for thought — Buying snacks and meals at an event will certainly set you back at most venues. Eat a good breakfast before you leave, and take along drinks and snacks. Fill water bottles halfway full and freeze them the night before so you have a cold drink all day. Granola bars, nuts and dry cereal offer nutrition and will help keep you full. Most places permit at least plastic (not glass) water bottles. Find out in advance if you may bring in a lunch. family member select a special treat to enjoy or allot them with a “treat budget” to spend however they wish. Some events such as the New York State Fair have very reasonably priced food if you find the right vendors. Don’t go to the first booth you see, but shop around a little to find a good deal. And make sure you snack on the many samples available from vendors and organizations in the educational buildings. Many events make a lot of money through offering “extras” not included in a general admittance. Before springing for an additional experience, check out everything else first. Many times, there’s plenty to do without spending more. It may seem fun to pick up a souvenir by which to remember your outing, but many are overpriced and become yet more clutter to clear out later. Taking digital photos offers a nearly free option to preserve your memories. You can print the photos later to scrapbook them with ticket stubs and programs.

Best of all, the area zoos always offer something different, from new animals to events to attractions. • It’s easy to see the latest news at Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnett Park (www.rosamondgiffordzoo. org) in Syracuse. The “What’s New” page (www.rosamondgiffordzoo.org/ whats-new) will keep you updated on new arrivals, zoo babies and other attractions year round. The zoo also offers tour groups and demonstration areas featuring elephants, birds, penguins and “Meet the Keeper” presentations. Admission is $4 to $8 and free for children 2 and younger. • The New York State Zoo at Thompson Park (www.nyszoo.org) in Watertown helps kids get in touch with New York’s wild animals. Check the special events calendar (www. nyszoo.org/calendar.html) for the year-round schedule, which includes animal demonstrations and activities for children and adults. Admission is $4 to $7 and children 3 and younger are free. • Seneca Park Zoo (www.senecaparkzoo.org) in Rochester abounds with animals, and offers several fitness-related events throughout the year, including the “Jungle Jog and

Fitness Challenge.” Check the events page (www.senecaparkzoo.org/ events.aspx) for more information. The Seneca Park Zoo also features age-related programs for the whole

family. “Monthly Night at the Zoo” events all summer allow visitors to see activities of nocturnal animals from 6-8:30 p.m. More summer programs may be found at www.seneca-

Elephant demonstrations are among the attractions at Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnett Park in Syracuse.

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York parkzoo.org/summer-programming. aspx. Admission is $5 to $10 and free for children 2 and younger. “Night at the Zoo” is $3 to $8. • Aqua Zoo (www.aquazoo.com) in Alexandria Bay features 50 aquarium exhibits of fresh and saltwater fish, coral, and invertebrates. Fossils are also on display. After your visit, you can follow your favorite fish on Aqua Zoo’s blog, www.somethingsfishy-aquazoo.blogspot.com. Aqua Zoo boasts of being the nation’s only family owned public aquarium. Admission is $7 to $7.50. Children 2 and younger are free. • In addition to animal exhibits, the Utica Zoo (www.uticazoo.org) offers special events (www.uticazoo. org/events) and age-appropriate programs all summer (www.uticazoo. org/info/camp.cfm), including summer camps and home school classes. Admission is $5.75 to $7.75. Children 3 and younger are free. Each zoo offers group rates. If you plan to go to one particular zoo several times throughout the year,

Exotic birds depicted in their natural habitat are among the creatures on display at Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnett Park in Syracuse. compare one-time admission rates to purchasing a zoo membership. Ask ahead if you may bring picnic lunches or what concessions are available on site. Most offer stroller rentals or permit parents to bring in their own. Before heading out, review zoo rules with your children for their safety and to protect the animals. For example, visitors are not allowed to feed or touch the animals except where permitted by the zoo. Some animals are disturbed by camera flashes, tapping on the glass of their tanks or other actions they could perceive as threatening. Zoo attractions and events may change, so it pays to call ahead or check the website to make sure you’re up to date on what’s new and fun at the zoo you plan to visit.

casting after they retrieve their line The Best of can Upstate New York once, so you pester as many people as it takes to figure out what’s working. Some of my best techniques were learned from old timers who were happy to talk my ear off on the matter of fishing in their hometown stream or lake. The hard part was getting away to make a few casts of my own. Be a good listener — Every variety of fish is different, and sometimes you just have to fish for them a lot to break their code. My favorite example of this is the difference between walleye and bass. Walleye tend to feed in deep, running water. Their strike is often difficult to detect because

they tend to bite at the very tip of your bait. Largemouth bass are more commonly found in slow or even still water, and as they inhale your lure their strike is often as strong as rams butting heads. Both can be caught with a worm, but often you won’t catch either one unless you present that worm in a way they like. For walleye, if I’m using a worm, I thread it as low as possible. That way a late strike on the bottom tip of my worm may still result in a good hook set. I do the opposite for bass. All technique aside, even the worst presentation will often still bring in a nice fish or two. I once caught a bass on a French

fry just to prove this point. Yes, you can catch fish without a whole lot of knowledge, but you can catch a whole lot more if you do your homework. Be a good listener and let the fish tell you what they like. Mixing it up — What’s the best way to catch a bluegill during the summer? How about a sunfish? How many of you said ‘With a worm dummy’? Yes, you will catch plenty of both of these fish with worms, but for me the best way is with a fly. You would be surprised to know how many pan fish will be fighting over your elk hair caddis when cast and left on the surface of the water. Bass also will fall for a variety of flies. Did you know that a popper fly cast to the edge of a lily pad will often produce the rise and strike of a northern pike? Fly fishing is not exclusive to trout and salmon. A variety of fish will fall for the fly if you use it right. So if you fly fish for trout exclusively,

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York give those other fish a try! Have you never cast a fly once in your life? Summer is the perfect time to start. Pan fish are much less finicky than trout, so you’ll get that immediate gratification along with some great weather. There is no law that you must wear waders while fly fishing. Fly casting from shore or boat

can both be very rewarding; just try not to catch your partner while you’re learning the basics. Even if you only go to one new place this summer, take my advice to heart. Finding a new place to fish truly is an adventure. Life is too short to cast the same bait under the same tree branch, so reinvent your fishing trip and explore the possibilities that lie within a single tank of gas. Good luck and tight lines. • 20 Year Manufacturer’s Warranty on Finish • .032 Gauge Aluminum Gutters • 20 Custom Colors Available • 5-Year Warranty on Workmanship
