Places to Learn More About Upstate New York History comes alive in places such as the Safe Haven Museum in Oswego or the Eastman House in Rochester By Sandra Scott

Safe Haven Museum in Oswego: The Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum is dedicated to keeping alive the story of the 982 European refugees who were allowed into the United States as “guests” of President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the World War II Holocaust. They were temporarily housed at Fort Ontario in Oswego from August 1944 until February 1946. Johnson Hall State Historical Site in Johnstown: The 1763 Georgian-style Johnson Hall was the estate of Sir William Johnson and Molly Brant, a Mohawk Indian, and their eight children. Johnson was the largest single landowner and most

influential individual in the colonial Mohawk Valley. His success in dealing with the Iroquois Confederacy greatly influenced England's victory over France for control of colonial North America. The Watervliet Shaker Historic District in Colonie: The site of America's first Shaker settlement is a unique, peaceful and historic place featuring the 1848 meeting house, 1915 barn, Shaker herb garden, orchard and cemetery. Although the center of authority shifted to Mount Lebanon, Watervliet prospered in the early 19th century.

The Jell-O Museum in LeRoy: "There's always room for Jell-O" was the slogan when well-groomed salesmen went house to house in “spanking rigs, drawn by beautiful horses” to promote Jell-O. Follow the history of the fun dessert that jiggles, wiggles and makes one giggle at the Jell-O Museum. Leave with a free box of Jell-O. Herkimer House in Little Falls: The Georgian-style mansion was the home of Revolutionary War hero General Nicholas Herkimer. Herkimer's place in history was assured in 1777 because of his part in the Battle of Oriskany. Although seriously wounded in the leg, Herkimer kept

command during the fierce combat. Ten days after the battle, Herkimer’s leg was amputated; he later died of infection. Eastman House in Rochester: George Eastman, a photographic pioneer and founder of Eastman Kodak, made photography available to the average person by creating small, easy-to-use cameras. The motto for his camera was: “You push the button, we do the rest.” A visit to Eastman’s house is to learn more about the man who claimed, “I want to make Rochester the best city in which to live and work.” Memorial Day Museum in Waterloo: In 1865 a druggist suggested honoring Civil War heroes by decorating their grave, thus giving birth to Memorial Day. The National Memorial Day Museum’s Mourning Room sets the tone for the seriousness of the museum. The Civil War Room chronicles how the horrors of the war with its high numbers of casualties led to the creation of Memorial Day. America’s Kazoo Museum in Eden: The kazoo created by Alabama Vest is called the original musical instrument. The Original American Kazoo Company south of Buffalo started manufacturing kazoos with the hope that “someday every boy would have a kazoo in his hand instead of a gun.” Cobblestone Museum in Albion: Cobblestone construction is unique to the Lake Ontario area. Visit three period cobblestone structures (circa mid-1800s) and four wood structures highlighting19th century agricultural implements and skilled trades. There are also a couple of fancy outhouses. Seneca Art and Culture Center in Victor: The new museum is on Seneca land. The facility tells the story of the Senecas, their contributions to art, culture and society. The Seneca’s Matriarchal Society helped to inspire the 1848 Declaration of Sentiments that eventually led to a women’s right to vote. There is longhouse and other things to see.

It’s Insect Season. You’d Better Take Advantage of It Horticulture educator Karen Bishop talks about the good insects we want to keep By Melissa Stefanec

hen it comes to our yards, a lot of people try to keep insects out. However, not all insects are created equal. here are many insects that are beneficial to yards and the overall environment. Creating a haven for those insects can mean good things for your yard and the planet. aren Bishop, who serves as a horticulture educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Onondaga County, shared some of her knowledge about beneficial insects. Read on for tips of how to turn your lawn into a safe and friendly habitat for nature’s helpers. Q. What are some of the most important insects to attract to one’s property? A. I’d like to share two categories of insects that are important to the home gardener. First, there are pol-

linators. Most people immediately think of bees when talking about pollinators, but there are other pollinators such as butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, and flies. The other category is insects that provide pest control by eating bad bugs. Everyone knows about ladybugs (or more correctly called lady beetles), but there are lots of other good insects, including lacewings, parasitic wasps and hoverflies. These insects eat bad bugs, such as aphids and mealy bugs, and keep your plants and vegetables healthy. Q. Why should people care about attracting beneficial species to their properties? A. Pollinators are vital to maintaining healthy ecosystems; 30 percent of the world’s crops rely on pollinators. Every home gardener can make a difference by providing a

pollinator-friendly yard. In addition, by attracting and allowing “good bugs” into our yards and gardens, you will help improve the health of your plants. This will allow you to eliminate or reduce the use of insecticides. Q. What can people plant to make their yards more attractive to beneficial insects? A. There are four simple guidelines that I would suggest: 1 — Plant a variety of flowers that bloom at different times of year; try to have something blooming from spring through fall. 2 — Have a diversity of blooms (e.g., color, fragrance, and height). 3 — If possible, plant a grouping of each plant instead of an individual plant. Make the grouping about four feet by four feet. 4 — Go native! Choose plants that are native to our area. They are more attractive to pollinators and the plants are better adapted to our area. Q. Are there things people can do in addition to growing certain plants? A. Yes, please consider incorporating the following actions into your gardening practices: • Reduce the size of your lawn; lawns are like a desert to pollinators. • Limit or eliminate your use of pesticides. • Provide shelter for insects, by leaving some twigs, branches and leaf litter. • Provide a source of water or mud. Q. Are there any sort of pesticides or lawn treatments that are especially dangerous to beneficial species? What are some alternatives to these treatments? A. We recommend following intergraded pest management (also known as IPM) practices. This means identifying the pest/problem and monitoring it to decide whether management is needed. Trying biological, cultural and mechanical controls before deciding to use pesticides is ideal. If pesticides are necessary, choose the least toxic, lowest residual pesticide.

Upstate offers a few closer to home to appeal to your inner Royal. • In the Mohawk Valley region, Beardslee Castle offers dining and event space. The Irish-style castle looks like a storybook creation. The castle’s murder mystery dinners and ghost stories seem apropos. But it’s also host to numerous weddings. Many nearby places of lodging can host overnight guests. (http://beardsleecastle.com; 123 Old State Road, Little Falls) • The New York State Military Museum displays artifacts pertaining to state history from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm. (www.singercastle.com; Chippewa Bay) • Boldt Castle is accessible only by boat. Boldt Castle has undergone significant renovation recently. If you’ve visited before, it may be time to return. And if you’re never toured it, it’s a must-do for your summer trips list. View its decadent gardens, architecture and period appointments. $9 for adults; $9 for children 13+; $6 for children 6 to 12; free for children five and younger, plus the cost of transportation.

Wolcott Falls Park. Not far from Chimney Bluffs, this park offers a 50-foot high waterfall, viewable from the top at

an observation deck or at the base, which hikers reach via a short, rough trail through the woods. The trailhead to the base of the waterfall is on the far side of the park, near a chain link fence. Montezuma Audubon Center/Wetlands Complex. Birders and hikers alike enjoy this natural wonder that is part of the U.S. National Wildlife Refuge System. The complex boasts six bald eagle nests. Sodus Point Lighthouse Museum. In addition to the self-guided tour through the maritime museum, enjoy spectacular views of the lake and, in the distance, Chimney Bluffs from the top of the lighthouse. It's worth the climb up the spiral staircase. Visit on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the lighthouse's free concerts on the lawn, starting in July. Lukacs Pottery Studio. It features hand-thrown pottery made on-site by Mark and Cathy Lukacs. Lake Ontario Wine Trail The Best of Upstate New York

For wine lovers, trail along Lake Ontario features great variety of wineries and hard cider producers By Tim Fenster

isitors and residents alike who want to try quality wine in the region have more than the Finger Lakes region to visit. While the Finger Lakes area has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the most thriving wine-producing regions in the eastern United States, a growing number of winemakers and brewers are choosing to set up shop farther north, near the shore of Lake Ontario. Currently, at least five wineries, two hard cider producers and a distillery lie in the Lake Ontario region, which extends from Rochester on the west to Syracuse on the east. Together, the eight alcohol-producers make up the Lake Ontario Wine Trail. But while the producers on the Lake Ontario Wine Trail are the new kids on the block compared to those on more established wine trails, such as the Seneca Lake Wine Trail and the Cayuga Wine Trail, not all of them are too new. The oldest on the

Lake Ontario Wine Trail, Casa Larga Vineyards & Winery, was started in the ‘70s. Colin McConville, president of the wine trail and head distiller at Apple Country Spirits, says there is renewed interest in the region thanks in part to the opening of new cideries and distilleries. Unlike other wine trails that only give full membership to wineries, the Ontario trail has included local cideries and distilleries, and would welcome any microbrewies should any open in the area. “This area has been known for its wine for a very long time, but we are seeing a renewed sense of excitement because of cideries and distilleries,” McConville said. “There’s a little something for everybody.” McConville and the winemakers of the Lake Ontario Wine Trail are also hoping to generate more interest in the region by pushing to have the area designated as an American Viticulture Area.

AVAs range from as large as the Upper Mississippi River Valley AVA (29,900 square miles) to the Cole Ranch AVA in northern California (62 acres). There are more than 200 AVAs across the country, and they are present in most U.S. states. In New York, there are AVAs for each of the major Finger Lakes as well as the Lake Erie AVA, Niagara Escarpment AVA, the Long Island AVA, the Hamptons AVA, the North Fork of Long Island AVA and the Hudson River AVA. McConville says an AVA designation would generate more interest in Lake Ontario wineries, and increase visitors from other parts of the state, such as Buffalo and Albany. “We’re a smaller trail, but slowly but surely we’re getting recognition,” McConville said. “I think AVA designation would go a long way towards that.” For more information on the Lake Ontario Wine Trail, visit www. lakeontariowinetrail.com.

scaping to a rental cottage, cabin or seasonal home represents an affordable way for many people to enjoy an extended getaway. t makes sense to rent by the week for long vacations because of the extra room, full kitchen and decreased rate by the day. It certainly beats the prices hotels charge for long periods or time. But be aware of scams in the rental cottage business. Instead of a blissful vacation, some people end up scammed out of their rental fee when they arrive to find the address advertised is for a completely different

property. Or the property is vastly different from the owner’s description. Or it isn’t even owned by the person who collected the rental fee. Try these tips to rent a vacation home with more peace of mind. n Work with a travel agent. These pros work with regular clients and may be able to swing you a better deal than if you tried to contact the owner yourself. Agents can also help you develop an itinerary of what to see once you arrive. n Ask plenty of questions in advance about the location. For example, “close to antique district” may not mean walking distance to some people. n Ask about what’s included and what amenities the property includes. A rustic cabin likely won’t include linens. Some people define “fully stocked” differently than others. n Look for online reviews of the property from third-party sites. n View it on Google Maps’ street view. Keep in mind the photos may

be a few years old; however, they can give you a good idea of what the property is like. Photos offered by the owner may show only favorable angles. n Ask friends and family for recommendations. Seriously consider a place about which they all rave. n Ask for an agreement in writing that spells out all the terms. What happens if you have to leave early? How about if the property is damaged while you’re there? n Find out if the owner works with a maintenance company or personally responds to any problems. You need to know who you should call if the water tank dies or the A/C conks out, for example. n If possible, check out the rental in person before handing over any money. n Pay with a credit card, which may offer some protection. If an owner tries to scam you, immediately report the fraud to your credit card company.

ant to hike, do some bird watching or canoeing in state parks without paying to enter each time all season? Consider purchasing an Empire Pass decal to adhere to your vehicle. The pass offers unlimited access to most of the state’s park and recreational facilities regardless of the number of occupants in your vehicle. This might be the motivation you need to get your family out in the fresh air more this season. And when the weather cools down, the pass is still valid. Actually, it’s valid until March 2017. The 12-month pass includes access to 180 state parks, 55 Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) forest preserve areas, and the state’s boat launch sites, arboretums

and park preserves. Out-of-town guests, baby sitting kids, family friends? Bring them along. As many people can fit in your vehicle are welcome to use your Empire Pass. The annual pass is $65. The 3-year Empire Passport may be purchased for $165; a 5-year Empire Passport costs $260. A lifetime pass is $750, representing a savings after 12 years of use. It never expires and like the annual pass, you may use it as often as you like, any time of the year. If your company wants to purchase Empire Passes for employees, or you want to give them to your extended family and friends, the state discounts each by $3 for the purchase of 25 or more passes. Read over the reviews and ask lots of questions before booking it. • Explore state and national parks. Instead of spending $100 or more for tickets to a theme park, check out natural wonders available for free or a nominal fee. • Check the website and coupon sites for discounts on admission to points of interest. Some places offer “play and stay” packages or discounts if you visit affiliated partners. • Pack your own food. If you’re flying, make sure it’s within guidelines. Purchasing food as you travel is always the most expensive way to get something to eat en route. You can also save on food while staying at a hotel if you get a room with a kitchenette and fix two meals a day in your room. • Go off-peak. Summer and fall are the best time to visit places such as resorts near ski lodges. You can still enjoy all the other amenities while saving on lodging. • Consider train or bus travel. For some destinations, it’s less expensive than driving and won’t take much longer than flying, when you consider the airport checks. • Consider an inclusive package, such as a tour or cruise. If you’re prone to overspending, package deals can help you set a budget and stick to it because unless you haul home a ton of souvenirs, you can’t break your budget. • Don’t overdo it. Keeping too busy costs more and isn’t as much fun as taking it easy on vacation. Especially if you have young children or elderly adults on the trip, visiting one site or event per day is likely enough.

ost people love trips, but most of us also dread the packing that accompanies them. Under any circumstances, packing is a chore, but as with any other chore, if you do it right, it really pays off. Packing well lets you focus on the fun stuff, and packing poorly can add a lot of stress to a get-away. If you think your packing skills could use a boost, read on for some tips and how to pack like a pro.

1 — Make a list (or three)

In the days before a trip, start a packing list. Be sure to write down essential items. Make a special list for frequently forgotten items. Break your list into categories — and pack those similar categories together. For example, make a list of all the cosmetic items you have to bring, and then pack them all at once. Make a list of electronics, and pack them at once. Make a separate list of items that you have to pack at the last minute and will need to use up until you leave. Review that list right before you walk out the door.

2 — Wants and needs

Make sure to save room for your must-have items. Leave all non-es-

3 — Have a lot of bags

Using laundry bags, shopping bags, cosmetic cases and similar bags can help you stay organized when you are at your destination. Put all your jewelry and hair accessories in a separate bag or tote. Bag your undergarments together. Put your shoes in a plastic bag to isolate them from other items. It’s also useful to pack some shopping bags and a bag for dirty linens. That way, you aren’t picking

through your suitcase for clean items. Then, when you get home, you can just dump your dirty laundry into the wash.

4 — Start clean and empty

A lot of us use the same cases and bags over and over again. Over time, these are bound to accumulate a lot of junk. Before you pack into something, make sure it’s empty. That way, you only bring what you want and need.

5 — Roll your clothes

Neatly fold and roll your clothes before you pack them. This method is very space efficient. It also helps evaluate what you have packed and decreases wrinkling.

6 — Roll and rubber band

When you pack for your children, separate their clothes into complete outfits. Take that complete outfit (socks, underwear, pants and shirt), and roll it up together. Then, rubber band the roll together. When you reach your destination, your kids can just take out a bundle of clothes each morning and get ready for the day.

and bottled drinks can cost a lot at a convenience store. Bring refillable water bottles or bring 12-packs of beverages along to cut back on beverage costs. Bring a medicine case with things like medicine, Band-aids, nail clippers and the like. No one wants to pay $3 for two aspirins at a truck stop.

8 — Pack a road bag

If you are embarking on a road trip, pack a special bag with items you will need during the car ride. This decreases the likelihood that you will have to pull over and pull apart your tightly packed trunk. Include cleansing wipes, snacks, activities, and anything else that is critical to the trip. Also be sure to pack a bag for trash you accumulate while on the road.

Our Upstate New York The Best of Upstate New York

pstate New York includes most of the state of New York, excluding New York City and its environs. The region includes the major cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Albany and Syracuse. Before the American Revolutionary War, Upstate was populated by Native Americans, and was home to the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. The region saw many battles between the Continental Army and the Iroquois, and several treaties drawn up after the war ceded much of the land to settlers of European descent. The development of Upstate New York was spurred by the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, which greatly eased the transport of goods between the port of New York City and inland cities along the Great Lakes. As a result, Upstate became a hotbed for manufacturing, giving birth to such firms as General Electric, IBM, Kodak, and Xerox, and it welcomed a large influx of immigrants. Since the mid 20th century, American de-industrialization has contributed to economic and population decline Upstate, and the region is largely considered part of the Rust Belt. Unlike the New York metropolitan area, Upstate New York contains vast areas of rural land. As a result, Upstate also supports a strong agriculture industry, and is notable for its milk and dairy products, its fruit production (especially apples), and winemaking. New York City is dependent on the natural resources of Upstate for a variety of services, including the city's water supply and electricity. The region is home to several popular tourist and recreational destinations, including Niagara Falls, the Adirondack and the Finger Lakes. Source: Wikepedia

Best of Upstate New York Storing the The Season’s Bounty

Use your extra refrigerator

ummer and fall are times of plenty in Upstate New York. The growing season is short, so we have to make the most of it while it’s here. With offerings from private gardens, roadside stands and farmer’s markets, many people’s kitchens are overflowing with fresh produce. Sometimes, using that produce before it goes bad can be a real challenge. Here are some ideas of how to keep your fruits and vegetables fresh and tasty, and out of the garbage or compost bin.

If you have an extra refrigerator that you use for storage of beverages or overflow, put it to work for your fruits and vegetables. They are ideal for fruit and vegetable storage because they aren’t opened as frequently. If you have problems remembering what you store in your secondary refrigerator, put a white board or a notepad on the front of your main

Keep them clean

For most fruits and vegetables, clean storage is ideal. Rinse your produce in cool water. Gently dry it or use a salad spinner to remove excess moisture. Make sure your utensils and work areas are clean and sanitized. Produce stores best in a clean environment.

Package like a pro

Proper packaging can greatly prolong the shelf life of your produce. Storing in plastic bags and providing ventilation are best practices. Before the summer and fall harvests hit, save some of the bags and containers that your store-bought produce arrives in. These containers are used by the pros to prolong the life of produce, so put them to work for you. Make sure the bags and containers are clean and dry and reuse them for your harvest finds.

Store them cool

Most produce has a much longer shelf life when it’s stored in a cool area. According to Cornell Cooperative Extension’s guidelines, there are a few exceptions (e.g., hot peppers,

Use your cool wisely

The best place for your produce is in a produce drawer. If you run out of room in the drawer, use the rest of your refrigerator wisely. The bottom and back of the refrigerator are its coldest areas. If you need extra storage space, use the lower shelves of your refrigerator and store produce in the rear of those shelves. If something has to move to the front of the refrigerator, move the produce that likes slightly warmer temperatures. According to Cornell Cooperative Extension’s fruit and vegetable storage fact sheet, snap beans, cucumbers,

refrigerator and write down what you put in the spare.

Use your counter top wisely

Not all the produce that ends up in our kitchens is ready to eat. If your produce isn’t ripe, let it ripen on counter or table. Once it’s ripe (or when it’s close to ripening), store it in the refrigerator until it’s ready to consume. Things are Brewing at Critz Farms in Cazenovia

ritz Farms in Cazenovia has been entertaining visitors for some 30 years. Starting out as a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm, the husband and wife team (Matthew and Juanita Critz), has grown the farm from an out-of-use dairy farm into an award winning agritourism destination entertaining more than 60,000 visitors a year. The newest addition is the Critz Farms Brewing & Cider Company. The Critzes received their farm brewery license in November and are now brewing a growing portfolio of unique craft beers. “The brewery has been a nice complement to the farm winery, which specializes in the production of handcrafted hard ciders,” said a news release.

Established in 2011 and previously known as the Harvest Moon Cidery, the beverage arm of the Critz Farms business is now being re-branded as the Critz Farms Brewing & Cider Company. The Critzes pride themselves in being first generation farmers who grow most of their own ingredients for their hard cider and beer. The farm offers a tasting room and patio where visitors can relax and enjoy the views and the brews. Panini sandwiches and snacks are also served. Critz Farms also offers events throughout the season, including a fall harvest celebration. Critz Farms is located 3.5 miles south of Route 20 on Route 13. Empire Farm Days: Not Just for Farmers The event is the largest outdoor farm trade show in the Northeast By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

f you’re in agriculture, you likely already know all about Empire Farm Days. Developed in 1931 by the Empire State Potato Growers Association, EFD has become the largest outdoor farm trade show in the Northeast. The three-day expo features top vendors of agricultural products, services and equipment; however, even if you don’t farm, the show offers plenty of reasons to go. • Many vendors display items of interest to landowners. The show’s four main vendor tents, one in each corner of the showgrounds, include hundreds of stands, including those selling gardening and landscaping products, home products and services

and more. • EFD also includes a showcase of New York-sourced produce and value-added products. Sample some pepper mustard, cheese, juice, honey, maple syrup or jelly and take home the flavors you love. • If you and your family want to learn more about agriculture, land conservation, animal care and science in general, all the workshops and seminars are free — whether you farm or not. Cornell University, 4-H, Morrisville State College, USDA, New York Department of Environmental Conservation, SUNY Cobleskill, New York State Grange, Lancaster Farming, Country Folks magazine and

many other educational, media and community entities offer seminars and booths with handouts and information. • Numerous brands showcase agricultural equipment in live demonstrations at the edge of the show grounds. See the latest farm implements in action. • If you like high-tech, EFD is where you can see the latest in farm technology, including aerial drones, robotic milking equipment, GPS-guided equipment and more. • It’s not just a cow show. EFD includes numerous horse equipment vendors and live horse demonstrations as well. Equine enthusiasts will find plenty of information and vendors. • Antique vehicle hobbyists will enjoy the vintage tractor show and daily “Old Iron” parade through the show grounds.
