Gorgeous Gorges in Upstate New York Great vistas, hiking opportunities By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

E

xploring Upstate New York’s gorges can provide your family with memorable back-to-nature daytrips this season. Rimmed by forest and hewn by moving water, these gorges’ hiking trails offer exceptionally beautiful vistas. Each park is within a short driving distance. So breakout the hiking boots and cameras: the gorges are waiting! Watkins Glen State Park (www.nysparks.com/ parks/142/details.aspx) in Watkins Glen offers hiking trails above, around and even behind its largest waterfall. With its panoramic views from the rim trails, stream and well-maintained footpaths, it’s little wonder the park has become a favorite, not only of local nature enthusiasts, but of out-of-state visitors, too. “Watkins Glen State Park is the oldest and most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks with a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound,” said Kristine Uribe, representing New York State Parks. “Many come as first timers to experience its beauty. Even more make the trek because they remember being awed when they visited as a kid and wish to pass those memories onto their own children.” Camping facilities are available if you want to plan an overnight stay. Ithaca’s numerous gorges and waterfalls provide several hiking opportunities within a 10-mile radius. Buttermilk Falls State Park (www.nysparks.com/parks/151/ details.aspx) offers a small lake, forest and gorge trails, pool, playground and playing field. Campsites and cabin

Watkins Glen Gorge rentals are available. Ithaca Falls boasts an impressive 105 feet high and 175 feet wide, the largest of the six waterfalls along Fall Creek in a mile-long gorge. Robert H. Tremen State Park is home to Enfield Glen, a historic gristmill and 12 waterfalls. The ruggedness of the landscape is reflected in names like “Devil’s Kitchen” and “Lucifer Falls.” Looking down its 115-foot plunge, you can see a breathtaking view of the gorge. Cabins and camping facilities for RVs and tents are available.

Can’t make it to Arizona this summer? Consider visiting the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth State Park (www.nysparks.com/parks/79/details.aspx) in Castile. With its 66 miles of hiking trails, you may want to expand your visit from a day trip to camping at the park a few days. Letchworth provides cabin, tent and trailer camping facilities. Chittenango Falls State Park (www.nysparks.com/ parks/130/details.aspx) boasts a 167-foot waterfall, footbridge lookout and a large variety of plant and animal life along its hiking trails. Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York

Enjoying the Season —

Without Breaking the Bank Fun things this season can be free or very inexpensive By Melissa Stefanec

S

ummer and fall are so welcoming, they make you want to get out of the house and look for some fun. A lot of fun comes with a hefty price tag, but there are some entertainment options out there that won’t break the bank or a fun-loving summer spirit. Here are some lowcost entertainment ideas.

State Parks/Historic Sites and County Parks

There aren’t a lot of places where you can do so much for so little (under $10 a carload). You can swim, hike, bike, boat, barbeque, sunbathe, camp, and the list goes on. Visit www.nysparks.com/parks/ to see a list of state historic sites and parks. You can filter by amenities and activities. A few clicks will lead you to your version of fun.

Summer Leagues

Joining a sports team may be just the shot in the arm your summer needs. Most leagues are low-cost or free. Think soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball and the like. A league will force you to get moving and rediscover your competitive spirit.

Wine Tours

No matter where you live in New York, the Finger Lakes aren’t too far away. Whether you’re a wine aficio-

14 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2012

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York nado or know your wines by two kinds (red and white), a wine tour has something for you. Most wineries only charge $1 or $2 for tastings. Besides wineries, there are quite a few craft breweries and distilleries on the wine trails. Many also offer gourmet foods and even do food and wine pairings. There are wineries outside of the Finger Lakes too, in places like the Buffalo area and the Thousand Islands region. There is also a Finger Lakes Cheese Trail.

Group Buying

Watch the Internet and television or listen to the radio. There are a lot of group-buying companies out there. Many of them offer specials on recreation or discount getaways, often at half the price. Some sites let you sign up for family or couplesthemed specials. They are a great idea generator.

Grow a Garden

Our modern times are often very

busy and complicated. We are very far removed from our food. Take the time to grow a garden this season. If it’s later in the year, buy plants instead of planting seeds. Start small and plant a garden with your favorite fruits, vegetables and herbs. When harvest time comes along, get reacquainted with your kitchen and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Visit usda.gov and search for gardening for tips on getting started.

Concerts

New York state is lucky to have a very active outdoor music scene during the warmer months. Most of them are free. Whether you like jazz, classics, rock or symphonies, music abounds in this area. Check out community calendars on local television or radio stations and their corresponding websites. You can also visit county, city or town websites.

Picnic

Picnicking is a lost past time. It basically involves packing up what you were going to eat at home and bringing it outdoors. There’s something liberating about enjoying a meal outside. Pick a picnic site where you can do something else outdoors like playing, walking or site seeing. Just remember to pack enough napkins and some materials for clean up.

Fishing

Your Guide to Farmer’s Markets The jargon you need to navigate the market and become a savvy buyer By Melissa Stefanec

F

armer’s markets are one of the last places you can get fresh, seasonal, local and affordable food in every color of the rainbow. They are growing in popularity and popping up in neighborhoods and cities all over the country. They present a unique opportunity and offer a selection that most retail stores simply can’t match. It’s not just fruits and vegetables that are sold at farmer ’s markets. Many of today’s markets run from spring into fall and offer an unparalleled selection of goods. You can purchase breads, baked goods, pasta, cheese, butter, meat, plants, honey, oils, eggs and other homegrown and homemade foods. Many markets also have non-food items like lotions, candles, soaps, crafts, furniture and the like.

Most of the offerings at a farmer’s market are locally produced. Buying at a market is a great way to support local agriculture and artisans — it keeps your money local and offers a great opportunity to reinvest in your community. It’s also a great way to reduce your carbon foot print. A pepper from the farmer down the road took a lot less oil to produce than the one that was grown south of the equator. The local pepper probably tastes a lot better, too. When you browse the vendors at a farmer’s market, there will be a lot jargon floating around. Here is a guide to help you navigate the market and become a savvy buyer.

Locally grown

This should mean it was grown relatively close to where you are standing. If you are unsure, ask the vendor. Most vendors will be glad to tell you about their farms. If the person can’t tell you about the farm, the items are probably the same ones you could purchase in a supermarket.

Organic

Organic typically means that the item you are buying was grown without the use of chemically formulated pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics or growth stimulants.

GMO/GEO-free

GMO stands for genetically modified organism, while GEO stands for

16 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2012

genetically engineered organism. Without getting too much into the science, a GEO or GMO is one that’s DNA has been rearranged and engineered. Food without GMOs is typically grown from heirloom seeds.

Heirloom

This word is typically associated with a fruit or vegetable that was grown from an heirloom seed. An heirloom seed is one with a history that has been passed down for generations. Seeds from a fruit are harvested and used the next season. Heirloom seeds are not used in modern, largescale agriculture. For example, most fruits and vegetables are now grown from grafts or from a few seed varieties. Plants grown from heirloom seeds come in hundreds of varieties.

Cage-free

This could mean a number of things and is usually applied to eggs. It could mean the chickens have a door to the outside or it could mean they roam free. If you are concerned with the animals’ outside access, freerange is your safest option

Free-range

This means that the animal that supplied you with a product was allowed to spend some of its life outside and wandering around freely. Free-range animals get much of their diets the old-fashioned way; they eat off of the earth.

Grass-fed

This term is typically applied to meat and it means just what it sounds like. The animal that is providing you with meat was allowed some time to graze. Many animals responsible for our modern day meat supply are not allowed outside of feed lots. If you see a word you aren’t familiar with, just ask the person at the booth. Most will be happy to tell you everything you need to know about the products he or she is selling.

Sonnenberg Gardens Has Never Looked Better With new events and plenty of things for kids, site offers fun opportunities for the family By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

landscaping and graceful architecture. Once a private residence, the property had enchanted visitors for decades with its bounty of flowers,

carefully kept gardens and stunning vistas of Canandaigua Lake. In recent years, the buildings and 50 acres of grounds had fallen into disrepair because of a lack of funding; however, in June 2011, Sonnenberg Gardens celebrated a grand reopening for three completed renovation projects totaling $2.5 million. A “Save America’s Treasures” grant, funds from the Natural Heritage Trust and fundraisers paid to renovate the belvedere, mansion veranda, a building in the Old Fashioned Garden, and the Japanese Teahouse. The property’s sale to New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation in 2006 also helped fund repair of the facility. “Thanks to generous contributions from individual and business donors, along with a $12,000 Lloyd E. Klos Historical Preservation Grant from Rochester Area Community Foundation, our goal was achieved and a new roof was put on the Tea House last fall,” said Lisa Scott, development and marketing manager for Sonnenberg Gardens. Scott also said other events have been added thanks to the support of the Rochester Japanese Association whose members donated their time and talents to present Moon Viewing Parties this September and a traditional tea ceremony. “These special events helped educate visitors about Japanese traditions and culture in the serene setting of Sonnenberg’s Japanese Garden,” Scott said. Try a Paddle Kayaking is growing in popularity thanks to area’s abundant bodies of water and pristine scenery By Melissa Stefanec

K

ayaking is catching on with people in Upstate New York. The area’s abundant bodies of water and pristine scenery make it an ideal place to kayak. This water sport can be enjoyed by people from all skill levels. Whether you want to leisurely paddle about a lake or dive down a raging rapid, CNY offers a breadth of experience for kayakers. Here is an overview of kayaking. Read on to see if this activity could fast become one of your favorite past times.

Who:

Kayaking is a great way to get out and enjoy nature. Many places

22 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2012

are easier to access in a kayak than in other types of boats. Photographers and nature viewers often choose kayaking as a way to access isolated and infrequently traveled areas. Kayaks are fairly simple to use and can be enjoyed by young and old.

How:

A kayak is a narrow one-person boat powered by a person wielding a single paddle with blades on both ends. A blade is the flat or curved and of a kayak paddle that resembles the end of a canoe oar. A kayak is propelled by a person paddling by placing alternate ends of the paddle in the water.

What types:

• Fishing/sit-on-top kayak: These kayaks provide adequate deck space for rigging and safety gear and are very safe and stable. They are very hard to tip and some models allow users to stand up. • Rafting kayak: These kayaks are typically intended for people navigating rapids and difficult waters. They can seat multiple individuals. They are agile and great for quick navigations. • Ocean kayak: These kayaks have a lot cargo space, maneuverability and comfort. There’s lots of room for passengers and cargo, such as a

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York tent, food, water and other supplies. • Inflatable kayaks: These kayaks are convenient for hikers to carry in packs and allow people to exit the water and carry their boats a long distance. The best ones have three separate air chambers, so if one area is punctured the boat can still remain afloat. • Whitewater kayak: These kayaks are typically made of hard plastic. They are typically shorter and stouter than kayaks intended for calmer waters. People often strap into these kayaks so they do not fall out of their boats when they tip. • Tandem kayaks: These have two separate hulls for two people to paddle.

History:

Today, most kayaks are made of plastic and are made smaller, stronger and more resilient than their fiberglass predecessors. The earliest kayaks appeared about 4,000 years

ago and were used predominantly for hunting. Kayaks were first built and used by the Inuit people. They stretched animal skins across whalebone or wood frames. The resulting boat was used to navigate rivers, streams, lakes and coastal waters. Today’s kayaks are typically used for recreation, but frequent many of the same waters.

Most modern kayaks are designed with stability as the primary goal. One of the skills experienced kayakers have to learn is rolling. This skill allows the kayaker to stay in the boat when it capsizes and roll it back into an upright position. Many recreational kayakers do not have this skill and simply stick to quiet waters where capsizing is fairly safe.

Safety:

Where:

Safety considerations are very important when kayaking. A kayaker should always wear a coast-guard-approved life jacket and a helmet. The helmet will protect the head if capsizing occurs. Kayakers should also know something about the waters they are traveling to make sure they don’t run into unintended drop-offs or rapids. People new to kayaking should also seek guidance on how to correctly paddle in order to avoid injury and get the most enjoyment out of their experience.

Acquiring your own kayak is a big investment. Even the lowest level boats are around $200 and that’s without a paddle, helmet or life vest. If you want to try it out, there are plenty of places to rent kayaks. Inquire at state parks and other recreational areas. If you decide to buy a kayak, make sure you go to place where the people are educated in the sport and can advise you on what boat and gear will be right for you.

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York H. Lee White Marine Museum Turns 30 Oswego museum is featuring an expanded Titanic exhibit to celebrate the 100th year of the ship’s sinking By Lou Sorendo

I

t’s a piece of the Port City’s nautical history. The H. Lee White Marine Museum, located at the foot of West First Street in Oswego’s historic maritime district, is a tourism jewel for Oswego County. The former administration building at the 1920’s grain elevator complex now serves as a treasure trove of maritime history and exhibit space. Executive director Mercedes Niess said this is the 30th year of operation for the museum. She said the key to its longevity is the strength it has as a nonprofit organization. “We work hard to make sure we are financially stable and we don’t take on things we can’t manage,” she said. She said it is vital to have projects and program ideas developed even if the financing is not yet available. When it is, volunteers and staff will be ready to present them, she said. “This museum has always had a great collection of artifacts. Of course, maritime history is so strong here that it’s really a no-brainer to exhibit, display and talk about it,” Niess added. A significant development at the historic district is the impending merger of the museum with the Oswego Maritime Foundation. The two partners are intertwined now and in the process of finalizing their merger, Niess noted.

Treasure trove of events

Since mid-May, the museum

24 • Summer Guide — The Best of Upstate 2012

has an exhibit focusing on “Sailing Oswego’s Harbor.” Anchoring the exhibit is a painting by James Gale Tyler that the museum recently had conserved. This season, the museum will have an expanded Titanic exhibit. 2012 is the 100th anniversary of its sinking. While the museum does not have actual artifacts from the ship,

it does have artwork and points of interest that are bound to captivate onlookers. Niess said Oswego’s George DeMass, chaplain of the Titanic Historical Society, is expected to return to the museum as well for his riveting lectures. The museum will feature a ribbon cutting for the restored tug Chancellor, a historic canal tugboat built in 1938. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. The schooner OMF Ontario has been under repair in Sodus and should return this summer to be berthed in front of the historic World War II LT5 tug. A trio of kids’ pirate days is also slated for July. The museum is open year-round and attracts about 28,000 visitors annually.

Tour Company Rents High Tech Transporter Touring parts of the Catskills with the help of a Segway By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

W

oodridge Segway Tours (www.woodridgesegwaytours.com) in Woodridge, in the Catskills, represents an example of technology increasing access to nature. Founded by Ari Schwartz four years ago, the tour company rents Segway Human Transporters to tourists to explore the O&W Railroad bed on a guided tour. “It’s a fantastic trial where people can enjoy the wildlife,” Schwartz said. “The marriage of the outdoors with the Segway creates a beautiful combination.” Those unfamiliar with the upright, scooter-like transporters may think riding a motorized craft incongruent with exploring a nature trail. But Segways operate quietly and “it’s green and it doesn’t pollute,” Schwartz said. “It does keep things in tune with nature even though it’s a technological invention. It was really meant to enhance people’s experience with the outdoors. “Not everyone’s cut out to do a trek of two miles, so it gives more people access to it,” he added. Plus, there’s the fun factor of zipping over knolls and gliding through the trees that the Segway offers. If hiking has become a little boring, a Segway tour shakes things up. For those who have never rid-

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York den on one, a little assistance from a skilled rider can help make riding safer and more enjoyable. A quick tutorial gives newbies confidence in how to operate the Segway. Riders wear helmets for safety. A Woodridge guide accompanies visitors for the 75- to 90-minute, fourmile tour to acknowledge points of interest along the trail and to ensure no one experiences undue difficulties in operating the Segway. The unpaved tour rail is relatively smooth and spans the distance between Mountaindale to Woodridge in Sullivan County, consisting of the hamlets of Mountain Dale, Woodridge, Hurleyville, South Fallsburg, Loch Sheldrake and Woodbourne. Scenic meadows, mountains, and forests comprise the trail. The tour is meant for those 16 and older and who weigh less than 250 pounds. The cost is $45. Special group rates are also available. Visitors can book online or by calling (800) 979-3370. Schwartz recommends visitors to Woodridge check out events at Bethel

Woods Center for the Arts (www. bethelwoodscenter.org), located north of Woodridge Segway Tours. The Museum at Bethel Woods chronicles the story of the Woodstock era. Events range from free admission museum exhibits to top names like Dave Matthews Band, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and Kelly Clarkson. The musical styles represented include doo wop, opera, and pop.

Rent a Canal Boat and Travel in Style Renting a boat to go up and down the Erie Canal can be quite an experience By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

T

hink of it as an RV on water. Renting a canal boat (mistakenly called a “houseboat” by some) gives the freedom of driving an RV on vacation with the pleasure of boating on the area’s most scenic bodies of water. Sarah Wiles, co-owner of Mid-

lakes Navigation in Skaneateles, likens vacationing in any of their fleet of 10 canal boats to traveling by covered wagon. “You’re right in the landscape,” she said. “You see things from a different perspective on a boat. You’re seeing [the landscape] and going

slowly enough to really appreciate the variation in the landscape.” Although the rates may seem high compared with hotel rates, you can decrease the expense by bringing along friends and family and dividing the cost. Plus, canal boats have their own kitchens so you’ll save on

Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York If You Go… To make your canal boat rental vacation the best it can be, consider the following tips: • Pay attention to the times and dates your rental begins and ends. This allows time to clean the boats and make necessary repairs. • Read the contract thoroughly. Some charge fees for cleaning the boats once you’re done. Some charge fees for lessons in operating the craft. • Consult with your insurance agent to make sure you are dining out. Some companies include the cost of fuel in the rental cost, so you will save on that expense as you travel to different ports on your trip. Most canal boat renting businesses provide all the kitchen appliances, dishes, pots and pans, kitchen and bedroom linens and everything else you’d expect in a hotel suite. They usually prepare the boat in every aspect, including filling the water tank, and give renters a lesson in operating the craft. Midlakes Navigation departs from Macedon, though its headquarters is in Skaneateles. The smaller boats ($3,075 per week) sleep a couple and a couple children or a third adult. The larger boats ($2,400) sleep four to six adults. Partial week rentals are also available at $1,950 and $1,650. “You get to pick exactly how fast you go, when you want to get up, what you want to see,” Wiles said. “You’re free if something catches your eye, like if you see a farmer’s market or a band concert. You’re not on a schedule. You’re not unpacking and repacking. Your whole hotel goes with you. You have all you need

covered if something happens. Or, ask the renting company if they offer insurance for the vessel. This will go beyond the deposit to cover significant damage. • If there’s a no pet policy, don’t bring a pet. Follow all safety rules, even if you’re experienced with boats and some rules seem like overkill. • Map out a route in advance

wherever you go. It’s a very relaxing experience.” At Erie Canal Cruise Lines in in Seneca Falls (www.canalcruises.com, 800-962-1771), the canal boats sleep four to six among its two staterooms and pull-out bed. Toni Trottier, coowner, said, “Everything’s provided except food.” Erie Canal Cruise Lines’ summer rate is $2,995 for seven nights and $1,995 for three nights. Bicycles are included so tourists can easily explore the towns where they dock. “The boats are small and easy to operate,” Trottier said. “People can stop at villages, look at the scenery and take bike trails. It’s very relaxing for people. They can stop where they want.” Low Bridge Charters in Fairport (Monroe County, lowbridgecharters. com, 585-352-9825) boasts that its 44-foot “Sunflower” is the longest Lock Master canal boat on the Erie Canal. The custom-built boat sleeps six adults, including the convertible dinette table/bed. Bicycles are provided to help guests enjoy touring wherever they dock. “It’s a nice-sized boat,” said Gary Ezell, who owns and operates the

with a few ideas of where you would like to stop, but don’t let a schedule dictate where you go. Sometimes, the event or venue you stumble upon is the most fun of the whole trip. • While cooking on board will save you some money, allow a little extra in your budget for dining out at a few places you dock so you can experience the local flavor. business along with his wife, Robin. “I think people are attracted to the experience of being on the canal, going through the locks and seeing the villages.” The Ezells love sharing with their guests before they depart the many unique waypoints along the canal, including historic places, arts & crafts

Bocce is a Ball! Game has seen a revival in the past decade By Deborah Jeanne Sergeant

P

erhaps your grandparents used to play it. Or you’ve seen the game played at an Italian festival. Bocce ball has seen a revival in the past decade. Starting in Greece and eagerly adopted by the Italians several centuries ago, bocce ball was originally played by rolling stones. Today’s bocce sets include eight balls of identical size, usually four of one color, four of another or else all non-matching balls. A ninth ball is the smaller “pallino” ball, also known as the jack or boccino. The pallino ball is the target and is rolled first. A coin flip or random selection indicates who tosses the pallino. Players in two teams of four or two (if playing teams; playing individually is also acceptable) try to roll their balls to get it as close as possible to the pallino ball and strategically bump the other team’s balls away from it. The team (or individual) whose ball is not the one closest to the pallino may continue to take turns rolling their balls until all the balls have been rolled. Complete rules are available at www.ibocce. com/rules.html. Bocce ball incorporates elements of bowling, shuffleboard, billiards and horseshoes that all add up to a lot of fun for people like Bob Piperata, who chairs the bocce league for the Sons of Italy in Utica. Eight teams from the organization play every Thursday night “quite loyally,” Piperata said, for 14 weeks during the summer. Many of the players are 50-plus. “I get a kick out of the older guys,” Piperata said. “They’re pretty good. You just roll a ball. It’s easy to play.” Apparently, disagreements as to the distance of a ball from the pallino

can arise from some of the more intense players. “When I took this on, I said, ‘If you’re going to come here to yell and scream, then I won’t do it,’” Piperata said. “We have some little squabbles. Some will talk in Italian so you don’t know what they’re talking about!” Fortunately, the players in Piperata’s league have been amicable. “More people are buying their own sets. You have a lot of fun with it,” he added. Gino Fabrizi of Liverpool organizes the bocce matches for Festa Italiana in Syracuse and participates in a 15-week league in Syracuse every summer. “It’s an enjoyable and easy game for young and old,” Fabrizi said. “It’s easy to learn but challenging to play.” Sixteen total play in his league that meets at Onondaga Lake Park, which offers two bocce courts. Fabrizi said that more would like to join—he frequently receives requests from interested parties—but with just two bocce courts, the league cannot accommodate more players. “In the past 10 years, it’s become more popular than ever,” he said. Those who want to try the game can also go to Lock 1 Club Bar / Lounge in Phoenix. Located on 60 State St. in the old old Red and White Grocery building, the club opened its doors late last year by brothers Gabriel (Gabe) and Angelo Quattrocchi. They want to bring local, state and national tournaments to the town, and make the place “a unique destination” for tourism in Phoenix. Lock 1 Club, which is open to the public, sponsors several tournaments. For more information, visit www.lock1club.com or call 6954658.

SAFELY

River systems are wonderful resources. The same rivers used to produce renewable hydropower also provide outstanding recreational opportunities for the public. We all need to share our rivers — safely. Every year in New York State, hundreds of people drown or are hospitalized for injuries that occur in the water* and 90% of people who drown are not wearing life jackets. As the owner and operator of 75 hydropower facilities and 50 riverfront recreation areas in New York, Brookfield encourages you to have fun and be safe by wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device. Whether you are fishing, boating or cross country skiing, Brookfield reminds you that dangers exist on water any time of the year, and that conditions can change quickly and without notice. Avoid areas such as dams, intake and water conveyance structures, gates, powerhouses and substations. Use only designated recreation areas, and respect all warning signs, buoys, sirens, booms, barriers and fences.

Always check water conditions before you recreate. One source is Waterline: www.h2oline.com or call 1-800-452-1742 (fishing edition) or 1-800-452-1737 (boating edition). www.brookfieldrenewable.com * New York State Department of Health Study © 2012 Brookfield
