From the President | Dr. Ronald E. Nettles

It is always exciting when someone recognizes your successes and achievements in life. At Co-Lin we regularly celebrate athletic team victories, the awards of our students and staff, and the many accomplishments of our clubs and organizations. It is also rewarding when Co-Lin gets recognized by others for its success and achievements as a college. For example, Co-Lin was chosen by the Aspen Institute as one of the nation’s top 150 community colleges. Areas considered included student persistence, completion, and transfer; consistent improvement in educational outcomes over time; and equity in outcomes for students of all racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. These are all areas that we have worked to approve as a college and I am very proud of the national recognition this ranking brings to Co-Lin. In another national ranking by The Chronicle of Higher Education, Co-Lin was named as one of the best colleges in the nation to work for. The results were released in The Chronicle’s ninth annual report on The Academic Workplace and are based on a survey of 281 colleges and universities. Only 93 of the institutions that applied for the program achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition. Co-Lin was one of three community colleges in Mississippi and one of only 25 two-year colleges in the nation to receive the honor. I am especially proud of this recognition because it reaffirms our motto that Co-Lin is “The Place to Be” for our employees as well as our students. Co-Lin was also the recipient of the Career Preparedness Award for Mississippi in the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign. The award addressed career readiness assessments

As we move through the beginning of the fall semester I wanted to take the opportunity to not only introduce myself as the new Executive Director of the CoLin Foundation and Alumni Affairs, but also to thank you for all that each of you do to support Co-Lin in a multitude of ways. Your generosity allows Co-Lin to continue to provide a high-quality education while enhancing our reputation as a premier community college in Mississippi. That support enables our college to maximize its potential by providing additional opportunities for excellence that would not be possible without you. I come to Co-Lin after working at The University of Southern Mississippi for just over 11 years. As a McComb native, arriving here on campus felt very much like “coming home,” and I am enjoying my first fall semester here at Co-Lin.

and preparation programs, strength of the college’s relationships with local employers and support of administrators and faculty toward career planning. Again, this is another recognition of our college’s efforts to focus on the success of our students in the classroom and in their careers. In the area of veterans services, CoLin was the recipient of the Seven Seals Award and the Purple Heart College designation. The Seven Seals Award is presented in recognition of significant individual or organizational achievement in support of veterans and their families. Additionally, the Military Order of the Purple Heart extended recognition to Co-Lin as a “Purple Heart College.” This designation is extended due to Co-Lin’s service to the military population within the district and recognition of the sacrifices of same. At Co-Lin, we recognize the personal sacrifices that are made by military personnel and we have assigned administrative staff to assist them in continuing their education. I believe these recognitions are a positive reflection on CoLin and the communities we serve. A special thank you to CoLin employees for their hard work and dedication in achieving these recognitions. I also want to thank our alumni and friends for your support of Co-Lin and for the work we do for our students. It is nice to know that others around the state and country are recognizing that Co-Lin is “The Place to Be!”

From the Executive Director | D. J. Preiss There are few fall scenes that provide a better backdrop than college campuses in the South. At Co-Lin, that is especially true and I am truly thankful that I get to spend my time here. The hustling and bustling of students moving between classes, the sounds of the Blue Wave Show Band preparing for football season, and the leaves beginning their color shift paint a scene that is hard to beat. As many of you are aware, the brand new pedestrian corridor project was completed this past summer. The transformation of this section of our campus is truly remarkable. The funds for that project were provided by a $1 million federal grant through the Mississippi Department of Transportation for the Transportation Alternatives Program. We are all extremely grateful to the MDOT and central district Commissioner Dick

Hall for their assistance and support in securing the funding for this project. If you have not already done so, I welcome each of you back to campus to view this beautiful addition first-hand. As you can tell from the photography included on the cover of this issue, it truly is a remarkable scene and deserves an in-person look. Be sure to mark your calendar for October 22nd for Homecoming. A list of activities can be found in this issue, so be sure to be on campus on the 22nd. I look forward to seeing you there!

here are they now?

Kenny W. Peavey (’79), Melanie Hammill Bishop (’93), and Andrew McGee (’08) were all high-achieving student leaders while at Co-Lin. Here’s what they’re up to today:

Kenny Wayne Peavey of Columbia was

an outstanding pre-med major who found time to be involved in numerous campus organizations such as Baptist Student Union in which he served as president, Alpha Omega Science Club in which he served as president, and Phi Theta Kappa in which he served as vice president. He was recognized as Outstanding Inorganic and Organic Peavey then Chemistry student, Outstanding Social Sciences student, Outstanding Zoology Student, and was selected to the Hall of Fame. After Co-Lin, Peavey received a bachelor’s degree Peavey today from the University of Mississippi with a major in microbiology and minor in chemistry. While at Ole Miss, he was selected to Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-medical honor society, and selected to Phi Kappa Phi, which was the highest academic honor bestowed on a student at Ole Miss. He graduated from Ole Miss with a 4.0 GPA and was accepted to the University of Mississippi Medical School in 1981. He surrendered to the gospel ministry in 1981 and continued his education at William Carey University where he received a master’s degree in counseling psychology. He completed additional study at William Carey and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Today he is Senior Pastor at Edna Baptist Church in Columbia. He has been married to Wanda Jean McInnis Peavey, a Wesson native, for 30 years, and they have two children-Dr. Javous Matthew Peavey, D.M.D., and William Zachary Peavey, a banker at Regions Bank in Bartlett, Tennessee. He has been involved in his community as previous school board member at Columbia Academy for six years, was actively involved in Dixie League Baseball for many years, and served on the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board for six years. He enjoys traveling, writing, reading, and all Ole Miss sports activities.

Peavey said that his time at Co-Lin consisted of some of the best years of his life. “I made friendships that exist until this day,” he said. “My favorite instructor and my personal friend was Dr. Phyllis Hayes-Lanier. I served as one of her lab assistants during my sophomore year and established a close bond with her that undergirded my academic pursuits.”

M

elanie Hammill Bishop of Summit was also a science major who pursued numerous extra-curricular activities in addition to her demanding Bishop then course load. She was president of the Trailblazers, a Phi Theta Kappa officer, vice-president of the Student Government Association, vice president of the Blue Wave Show Band, a member of Bishop today the jazz band, served as a chemistry lab assistant, and she was a Colette. She was selected as a member of Who’s Who in American Junior/Community Colleges, and was named to the Co-Lin Hall of Fame. After Co-Lin, Bishop received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from University of Mississippi Medical Center, and completed a pharmacy practice residency at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo and a psychiatric specialty residency at VA Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Today she is a pharmacist at King’s Daughters Medical Center/Specialty Clinic. She is married to Steve Bishop, who serves as president of Southwest Mississippi Community College, and they have four children-Katherine, 13; Ruth, 11; and twins Eleanor and Arthur, 8. She is a member of First Baptist Church in Summit where she teaches Mission Friends and is a life member of Junior Auxiliary of McComb, a member of McComb Garden Club, and past chairman of the Pike County Distinguished Young Woman Program for 10 years. “The lifelong friendships I made at Co-Lin

are priceless,” Bishop said. “I treasure the memories of Steven’s Annex Suite F-6 and the fun PTK trips with Russell Ray and Pat Young. As a pre-pharmacy major, I spent many hours in the chemistry lab, and Dr. Donnie Lawson, Dr. Doug Schexnayder and Dr. Phyllis Lanier prepared me extremely well for pharmacy school. And I must give credit to Dr. Lanier for introducing me to my husband, Steve!”

A

ndrew McGee of Seattle, Washington wasn’t just an athlete who majored in football. The Magee native was well-known on campus as a student leader who was involved in Phi Theta Kappa, the Baptist Student Union where he served as a worship leader, and was named Mr. Co-Lin, in addition to his honors as an All-Conference athlete. Former Instructors Give Back By Angela Furr It seems that every institution has those iconic instructors; ones who are known for being extremely demanding, highly animated, or even a little quirky. Jim and Martha Lightsey of Wesson certainly could be considered Co-Lin icons. He was known as the psychology and sociology instructor who taught class from a rocking chair and “gave hard tests.” She was his soft-spoken wife who was passionate about helping students succeed in the reading and study skills courses she taught. They served Co-Lin and its students for a combined 49 years as instructors, but what they’ve done in the years since to support the college and the Foundation will continue to impact students for years to come. The Lightseys have been giving to the Co-Lin Foundation since shortly after it was developed. Over the past 20 years, they have established five endowed scholarships as well as a student leadership and a faculty development endowment. Jim Lightsey, originally from Bay Springs, attended both Jones County Junior College and Mississippi State University on a football scholarship. He went on to complete master’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi College and an education specialist degree from Mississippi State. He joined the Co-Lin faculty in 1971 and taught until his retirement in 2001. Martha is originally from Utica and attended Hinds Community College. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Mississippi State (where she met her husband) and a master’s degree from Mississippi College. She taught at Washington School near Natchez before moving to the Wesson area after they married in 1971. She taught at Whitworth College, Copiah Academy, and Wesson Attendance Center before beginning her career at Co-Lin in 1984, where she taught developmental studies for 18 years before her retirement in 2002.

In addition to their teaching careers, the Lightseys have been heavily involved in the Wesson community for over 45 years. He served as an alderman for 20 years for the town of Wesson, and they both have served in various capacities at their church, Decell United Methodist Church, for over 40 years. In their retirement, they have enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with their grandchildren. The Lightseys have one daughter, Jessica Pavy, a 1996 CoLin graduate, and seven grandchildren. Pavy was a standout at Co-Lin herself where she was head Colette, a member of the Hall of Fame, and was elected Miss Co-Lin. She is married to Trey Pavy, a mechanical engineer, and they live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “My earliest memories are of Co-Lin. Growing up, visiting my dad’s classroom and playing on campus- I never considered going anywhere else,” Pavy said. “My parents have always valued education and encouraged me to learn. Even on family vacations, we’d always visit museums and national parks; they’ve always appreciated different cultures and people.” she said. Pavy recalled one of the scholarships her parents have endowed, the Robert K. Howard Scholarship, set up in memory of her high school friend who had died in a tragic car accident. “He was my friend and they [my parents] loved him,” she said. “The scholarship was something they felt like they could do to honor him and add something positive to a tragic situation.” That’s something the Lightseys have continued to do at CoLin, with the endowment of the Bobby O’Quinn Scholarship, established in memory of the Co-Lin football player who passed away while trying to save two girls from drowning in Lake Okhissa in Franklin County. The Lightseys heard of the tragedy and

wanted to do something to help. For every dollar they give, the Lightseys’ goal is to help someone get an education. “With the football scholarships, I never paid any tuition for college,” Jim said. “I came out not really understanding that you had to pay to go to college.” Through their years of teaching students at Co-Lin and working with the youth group at their church, they’ve seen the needs that today’s students and faculty and staff face, and they are pasThe Lightseys enjoy sionate about helping others. regularly walking During their time as instructhe Oswalt Nature tors, the Lightseys both benefitTrail on the Wesson ted from faculty development Campus. scholarships for conferences and meetings, so that was another area that was important to them to provide assistance. D.J. Preiss, executive director of the CoLin Foundation, recognizes the importance of former and current faculty and staff giving. “These endowments from the Lightseys reiterate the true passion they have for student success and faculty support,” Preiss said. “One of the great things about Co-Lin is the wonderful support that our faculty and staff pour into this campus through their service and through donations.” “We feel so blessed and are so glad to give,” Martha said. “It’s a real privilege to be able to endow something that will go on.” In addition to their support at Co-Lin, the Lightseys have established scholarships at Hinds Community College, Jones County Junior College, and most recentJim and Martha Lightsey with daughter and son-in-law Jessica and Trey Pavy, and their seven grandchildren. ly at Mississippi State University, where their ceive any attention for their generosity, that’s why we continue to give.” recent endowment will For information on contributing to the benefit a Co-Lin graduate who is majoring in they are hopeful that others might be inspired to give as well. “Co-Lin continues Co-Lin Foundation, visit www.colin.edu/ education at MSU.
