From Driver’s Choice Magazine Welcome to our March/April issue of Driver’s Choice. This has been a very odd winter season in Saskatoon. We have 5 or 6 days around the 0 mark and then a week of -25 to -35 degrees. No matter what the daytime temperature gets to the evenings always seem to go to -35 degrees. It is very hard to get used to. The potential earnings for a driver are also very unpredictable. Rates are slowly headed upward, although they are still low. Manufacturing is on the rise slowly. On the down side transportation costs have risen 4.5 percent in the past year. Fuel is on the increase and subsidies are not keeping up with most companies. Tractors, trailers and parts are on the increase. I talk to a lot of drivers who say they are making good money but are taking much less home every cheque. Companies are starting their growth period again and we have a number of new advertisers and also some advertisers that have not been with us for a while. We appreciate their business so when you are talking to one of them about switching jobs be sure to mention that you saw their advertisement in Driver’s Choice Magazine. This is also a reminder that our 3rd annual Saskatoon Truck Show and Shine is scheduled for July 16 at the Husky. We are also proud to sponsor the 2nd APNA truck Show but it has moved to a new location at the Tradex Centre in Abbotsford. This show is scheduled for June 11 and 12. Well, that is about it for now. Keep the shiny side up. Until next time! Frank McKeown Editor, Driver’s Choice Magazine

Trucking Services INSURANCE – MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE Whether you are a leased operator, owner/operator, or fleet owner, it is critical that you have proper insurance protection and as insurance tends to be complicated, choosing your insurance broker could be the most important decision you make. It takes more than technical insurance knowledge to properly assess transportation risks. The more transportation experience your insurance broker has, the better the advice they can provide. Has your insurance broker ever worked in the transportation industry? Have they ever held a Class 1A license? How long have they worked with transportation insurance? These are some of the questions that you need to be asking. A seasoned insurance broker will have the right blend of transportation and insurance industry experience. They will spend the time to get to know your operation and identify the exposures you face. They will do a GAP analysis to determine if you currently have the coverage and limits you need. Actual Cash Value, Deductibles, Excess Value, Waiver of Deductible, Loss of Use, Debris Removal, and Freight Charges are some of the insurance terms. Do you know what you have? Better yet, do you know what you don’t have? Let me help you get the best value for your insurance dollar. Make the right choice. Call me today. Hank Wolbaum Knight Archer Insurance

Industry Updates SAFE AS SAFE CAN BE
Little Things Mean A Lot There are 2 questions that are simple and yet almost every professional truck driver never thinks about the answers. 1. What is the most common cause of driver injury? 2. Where are you most likely to have an accident? The most common cause of driver injury is a fall. Sometimes we trip over debris we are working around, sometimes we fall getting in or out of the cab or trailer, and sometimes we fall off the deck or load we are trying to tarp or tie down. One of the reasons that a fall is so common is that nobody takes them seriously. Everyone has tripped or slipped or even fallen with the result being more embarrassing than physically injurious. However, some of these small falls can change your life. One of our drivers stepped down from a tractor onto a parking barrier and shattered his ankle. He was off for 4 months. One of my driver’s wives tripped on a misplaced sidewalk stone while walking one weekend and has been off work for a year and has had 3 surgeries. Please be aware there is a real risk in these small falls. Wear supportive footwear with appropriate traction and maintain 3 points of contact when entering or exiting your cab.. The most likely place for an accident is a Yard, be it a truck stop, trailer yard or parking lot. As government agencies shorten the hours we can legally drive, we park more. The amount of parking space has not grown to keep up with the need. Truck Stops and Yards are crowded. with trucks interacting with pedestrians. Yards are private property and so traffic signage is often poor or not obeyed. Drivers are often tired, near the end of their day and focused on fueling or finding a spot to park. By design you have to come within inches of buildings and other trucks. All of these things add up to a higher risk of accident per mile that most drivers don’t even think about. Like falls, parking lot accidents are often more embarrassing than painful. However, they can be expensive and even disable yours or another driver’s vehicle. Last month someone backed into our truck in a truck stop when attempting to park. The corner of the other guy’s trailer went through our grill and radiator damaging the air to air and transmission cooler. In all, this accident cost almost 16 thousand dollars and 4 weeks downtime. Be aware of the danger. Be careful in truck lots. Focus on the big picture of what is around you and not just on the single task of parking. It is less embarrassing to get out and look than it is to hit something. Truck yard driving and climbing in and out you your rig are not the “glamour” activities in trucking. As a professional driver you need to be aware of the danger and hone your attitude and skills for the common dangers. ………………………………………… Ken Davey Director of Loss Prevention & IT Services| P:604.575.5578 F:604.575.7523 Ken Davey is the Director of Loss Prevention and IT Services at Accord Transportation Ltd. Industry Updates NEW COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT PROCEDURES MANUAL The Commercial Transport program monitors safety on the highways, promotes public safety and protects infrastructure through the development of standards and policies for heavy commercial vehicle weights and dimensions. The program also seeks to minimize impacts to industry by pursuing the harmonization of weights and dimensions standards and enforcement policies with Canadian and neighbouring USA and North American jurisdictions. Commercial Transport establishes transportation policies and safety standards regarding the area of weights, dimensions, load security and vehicle configurations. Under established conditions (policy) and for prescribed fees, permits to exceed legal limits are issued by Inspection stations (e.g. term oversize/overweight permits). Applications to move extraordinary size and weight loads are reviewed by Commercial Transport head office prior to permit issuance (e.g. heavy equipment, non-compliant vehicle configurations, 5 metre wide loads, etc.). The Commercial Transport Act and Regulations and the Commercial Transport Procedures Manual provides inspectors with interpretation guidelines. Inspection stations (formerly known as weigh scales) are located in various districts throughout British Columbia. You can get more detailed information regading the NEW COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT PROCEDURES MANUAL by visiting Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure website http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/cvse/CTPM/index.htm Jeffrey Monty, RPF Manager, Commercial Transport Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement
AMTA ASSEMBLES WESTERN CANADA’S FIRST ROAD KNIGHTS TEAM The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) has assembled the West’s first team of road safety ambassadors called the AMTA Road Knights Team. The team members were selected because of their collision-free driving record, commitment to safety and enthusiasm for the industry in which they have made their career. AMTA Road Knights are professional transport drivers with flawless driving records who meet with community groups to share their knowledge about how to safely share the road with trucks. Their mission is to make our roadways safer by encouraging all road users to be partners in safety. The team also works to increase awareness of trucking’s economic importance and to promote the industry as a viable career choice. Over the next two years, the AMTA Road Knights will appear at driving schools, business clubs, high schools, social clubs and other public venues. The selection panel included representatives from: Alberta Transportation, Workers’ Compensation Board, Calgary Police Service, Corus Entertainment, Today’s Trucking magazine, Truck West magazine and AMTA. Candidates who were short listed for the program were required to deliver a well organized and clearly presented speech before the panel of judges, submit a detailed application outlining why they want to become a team member and then participate in a rigorous interview by the selection panel. Team members will now undergo training to help them further prepare for their role as industry ambassadors. March/April 2011
