Women In Trucking My name is Melissa Giesbrecht and I’m from Plum Coulee, Manitoba. I work for Payne Transportation LP out of their Winkler office. I worked at a few factory jobs previously but grew tired of that and had always been interested in driving a semi and traveling since my dad and other members of my extended family all work in the industry. I was able to get into the industry through Payne’s sponsorship of me in the Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) Entry Level Professional Truck Driver Training Program. I drive a 2004 Peterbilt with a 2008 Fontaine double drop trailer. I usually haul farm equipment like tractors, sprayers, combines, and construction equipment like dump trucks, pay loaders, and rock trucks. I haul freight out of Winnipeg and the surrounding area going primarily to the Midwestern US then reload back to Manitoba from there. I enjoy traveling through the Midwest as most places are easy to get into, shippers and receivers tend to be pretty quick, and I encounter a lot of friendly people when loading and unloading. I would have to say the Iowa 80 in Walcott, IA is my favorite truck stop since there’s a lot to look at for trucks and it has a good restaurant.

For the most part I like life on the road. I enjoy the time alone, seeing new places, and meeting new people. My dog Jack is my loyal travel companion so I never really feel alone on the road but I do enjoy having a schedule that gets me home each week to see family and friends. I love being in control of a big semi and hauling oversized loads from point to point and plan to stay in the industry for a long time.

My hardest trip was the first one I made to Baltimore on my own. It was just my mom and I in the truck and we were really nervous because it was our first time on the road without my dad in the truck, or having anyone experienced to follow, so we were truly on our own. We had to drive through Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington, and we were both a little scared. We got lost a couple times but managed to get through the week and felt great afterwards knowing we could accomplish it on our own. It was a great feeling and gave me a lot of confidence that I could handle this on my own. All the places I have travelled to have been interesting but I’ve found the further south you go the more interesting the trips become. The scenery and the weather change and you meet interesting people to swap stories with. Trucking is a great career choice for women that enjoy time alone, love driving, and are confident in their abilities. You get to see new places, haul interesting loads, and you feel proud that you can handle the loads just as well as men can. My employers have been amazing with me since I bought my own truck and trailer and they always make sure I can handle the trips they assign me. Going new places makes me a little anxious sometimes, but they have worked through it with me and are slowly helping me expand my operating area. I am usually out during the week and home most weekends. I usually spend my time off hanging out with friends and family. In the winter I enjoy ice skating and really want to learn how to snowboard. I’m looking forward to summer for camping and bonfires.

Determining what makes

a good commercial driver During my visits to transportation companies, I often hear, “We can’t find good drivers,” from company representatives. What constitutes a “good driver” is somewhat different for each company, but one element companies all agree on is that a commercial driver must have a good driving record. The driving record is one way to measure a driver’s safety performance. Safe drivers are in great demand because they reduce company risk, which lowers insurance and associated costs. To make it easier to identify safe commercial drivers, Alberta Transportation and Service Alberta jointly developed the Commercial Driver Abstract (CDA). The CDA was designed to provide the transportation industry with accurate driving information on prospective and current commercial drivers. Previously, the only driving information available was found in the current driver abstract and whatever other information the driver was willing to share. The CDA incorporates existing driver abstract information and includes information on National Safety Code (NSC) infractions such as hours of service violations, cargo securement violations and overloads received while operating commercially registered vehicles. It also includes results of Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) roadside inspections For the same price as a driver abstract, the CDA offers an enhanced abstract for carriers. The driver abstract only contains moving violations and information about licence qualification (e.g., demerits, licence cancellations and suspensions, etc.). The CDA contains this information, as well as non-moving NSC violations (e.g., hours of service, load securement, dangerous goods, mechanical issues, etc.) plus CVSA inspection results. Demerit points are not assessed for non-moving violations, however, they can affect operator licences if unpaid fines have accumulated. Since non-moving violations carry a fine if convicted, failing to pay these fines could cause a restriction in services from Alberta Transportation or Service Alberta. This means no service from an Alberta Registry Agent until all fines are paid. The benefit of the CDA for both drivers and carriers is that all information from the current driver abstract, NSC violations and CVSA inspection results are now contained in one document. This provides insight into a commercial driver’s compliance history which, in turn, portrays a driver’s habits and attitudes towards road safety. A good CDA can set you apart from other drivers and give carriers more information when it comes to making important hiring decisions—a big benefit for you. For us, it’s all about safety. Welcome to the world of North Coast Trucking; I am Ed Reekie (Mr Ed) ) safety @ compliance officer ; I have been involved with trucks that bend in the middle since 1958 (single axle-single axle) . In the past 55 years I have been there and done that many times. Trucking has made exceptional changes in equipment , rules and enforcement during this time. There is one thing that is still very relevant and that is in order to do the job efficiently and therefore successfully a driver /owner operator must be happy then everyone around him will be happy. My advice to all drivers is to look for the company that goes where you want to go, hauls the type of freight that you like and has a good compliant workEd Reekie (Mr Ed) ing relationship with all authorities involved. Be watchful for companies that charge extra for any services provided ( truck the trucker) to enhance their bottom line. North Coast Trucking offers travel in 4 western provinces and 9 western states, we haul perishable loads (produce) and dry freight in Reefer trailers , most travel is in the North â&#x20AC;&#x201C; South corridor with very little movement East- West in Canada. Most of North Coast Trucking freight in California comes from Consolidation centers and therefore multiple pickups are kept to a minimum (one or two normally) , very close attention is paid to delivery times and appointments are made accordingly with consideration of rules and regulations and travel conditions. North Coast Trucking offers a fair % of the revenue to owner/operators and has no upcharges for all preapproved pay draws, cash advances , fuel cards and repairs , any negotiated fuel discounts are passed to the end user. All company drivers can expect a very competitive wage with company paid extended medical coverage and some cellular phone compensation, a safety bonus and well maintained newer equipment. We expect two years of experience, a clean drivers abstract, able to access the U.S. as a commercial driver and be able to pass a required DOT drug test.
