eDITOR’S nOTE: Well, it would appear that summer has finally arrived. The Driver’s Choice family wish all professional operators a safe and eventful free summer. Summer is when we spend our time, with family and friends. We travel to recreational areas to enjoy the beaches and parks that nature has to offer. We also greet the arrival of the dreaded tourist traffic season and all the additional four wheelers, with their R.Vs in tow. They tend to travel the highways aimlessly, in no hurry, and backing up traffic. That being said, we still need to do our jobs. Be patient! You’re the professional operator. Every day we hear about collisions where the cause is blamed on something other than the direct cause, driver carelessness. Drivers tend to tailgate, speed or just generally be distracted and the circumstance is to blame, instead of the actual cause. Road rage is running rampant and we seem to be accepting it as the norm. I was listening to the radio the other day and learned a woman had been was hit by a car while participating in a marathon. The blame was placed on the race and the fact that they didn’t have adequate signage to identifying the route. Does this make sense? Where is personal responsibility? There used to be a saying “Don’t blow up, slow up and live.” Please keep this in mind as you approach the highways this summer. BE SAFE AND ENJOY YOUR SUMMER. As always, be patient and drive safe. Dangerous goods compliance; a focal point in 2014

he Government of Alberta is committed to improving safety for all those using the province’s highways. As the number of heavier vehicles on the road increases, government must work more diligently than ever to provide a safe, efficient and quality network of highways. In support of this, On-Highway Inspectors at commercial vehicle roadside inspections focus on dangerous goods regulatory compliance. Inspectors help prevent potential dangerous goods incidents by verifying five major inspection items for transport compliance: training, documentation, safety marks, means of containment, any an amount or evidence of leaking product. Along the roadside, inspectors check dangerous goods training documentation. Drivers must produce their training certificates upon request and these certificates must have been issued by the driver’s employer within the last three years. Dangerous goods in transport must be accompanied by a hard copy shipping document. This document provides specific information about the product in transport, including the proper shipping name, the Hazard Class and the amount of product being transported. All of this information is vital in the case of an emergency. Inspectors also check for certification safety marks and valid tank certifications. Safety marks on dangerous goods products must always be visible and legible so that emergency responders know what kind of material they are dealing with. The leaking of dangerous goods is not tolerated nor is any condition that could lead to an accidental release of dangerous goods. Safety on Alberta’s highways is a top priority for On-Highway Inspectors and government as a whole. As such, corrective actions are taken if and when violations are identified. These actions may include warnings, prosecutions and/or placing the carrier out of service.
