eDITOR’S nOTE As I write this, it’s hard to think of spring. In Southern Alberta we have 20 cm of snow forecast over the next 24 hours. Weather events like this are unpredictable and lead me to think positively about road safety. The recent event in Saskatchewan should raise our awareness of some simple facts. We cannot and should not take road safety for granted. There is no reason to take unnecessary risks. If you’re tired, driving blind because of weather conditions, or driving into the blinding sun, find a safe location and pull over. Wait until you can proceed safely and unobstructed. The risk of not doing so is not worth a possible event. With all of the other distractions that you face on the road, we hate to remind you that tourist and RV season is on its way. This means that individuals hop into their motor homes or hook up to their trailers and hit the open road. They may or may not have the experience to handle all of the driving situations that they could encounter. At this time of year your focus should be on the job at hand, with your awareness at its highest level. Remember you are the professional. l Anticipate mistakes and give the tourists a wide berth. Now onto the lighter side. We’re heading into the season of Show and Shines, Job Fairs, Convoys and an array of other fund-raising ventures sponsored by the trucking industry. Let’s show the public what the industry is all about. Introduce a younger person to the industry while supporting your local events and your local trucking associations.

My name is Jeff Hudson. I’m the recruiter for Watt & Stewart Commodities Inc. based out of Claresholm, Alberta. Watt & Stewart specialize in general flat deck freight, consisting of lumber and pipe south bound and oversized loads of tires and drilling mud coming north. We currently run North America for dedicated customers. Our fleet is comprised of 2015 or newer Peterbilt and Freightliner tractors equipped with all the creature comforts. Our fleet consists of 90% company tractors, matched to specialized light weight modern tandem, quad, and super-b flat decked trailers. Watt & Stewart is continuing to grow to meet demand. We are expanding our fleet by 15% to meet the demand with the addition of 19 new tractors and 20 new trailers. Having been involved with the industry over the last 20+ years I have noticed the need to attract a new young demographic in order to do that the industry will have to make changes to meet the needs and supply a healthier life style for drivers. We can do this by promoting driving as a career. It is the opportunity for those of you wishing to make a good living experience something new everyday while seeing the country. We also recognize that alternative fuel powered vehicles are the future but without the supporting infrastructure these units are still a long way off. I look forward to discussing your future in transportation We offer a life experience of driving to entry level drivers through a finishing and mentorship programs.
