EDITOR’S NOTE Looking forward to 2020, a provocative thought comes to mind. Let’s make 2020 the year of the professional driver. Many years ago, I heard the acronym PTO (professional transport operator). I don’t know where it originated but I think it rings truer today than ever before. Drivers of today have to be educated on all aspects of their trade, they are truly skilled, Professional Transport Operators. These individuals must have the professional abilities to go with the designation. These skills take many years to develop, as technology changes, it’s a life time of learning. We should lobby anyone who will listen to the facts, that we need more support for the transportation companies that provide the necessary on road training. The current situation cannot and will not resolve itself, by changes in training regulations and/or revised licensing laws. We believe to produce the professional drivers our industry so desperately requires; it must be recognized as a true profession. This can only be done by education and awareness. In western Canada we are experiencing our first snow of the season. As usual the general public forget what winter driving is all about. We would like to remind all professional operators that now is the time to review your winter driving skills and repack your survival kit. Please remember don’t take unnecessary chances, pull over and wait out inclement conditions.
