From Driver’s Choice Magazine By the time you read this, Labour Day will have come and gone. It has not been a very good summer from a trucking point of view. Although the number of loads has been steadily increasing, I am told that the revenue for each load is down to what it was in the year 2000. We have had a steady influx of companies coming in from the East and cutting rates to keep their drivers busy. They don’t seem worried about the lower prices because, as the economy picks up they will go back to hauling Eastern Freight at the full price while it may take us up to 2 years to get back what we have lost. As far as good news goes, Driver’s Choice and our mother company, Coast2Coast Business Pages, put on a Show and Shine on the first of August at the Saskatoon Husky. It turned out to be a beautiful day for the show. We had the spectators do the judging for us and we had over 100 voting ballots turned in to count. Read more about our Show and Shine in this issue. We are a media sponsor for the Convoy for Special Olympics leaving Saskatoon on Saturday, Sept 26th. We are also a media sponsor for the 1st Annual Alberta Convoy for a cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in Edmonton on October 3, 2009. Read more about both these worthwhile events in this issue. We are starting to put together our 2010 issue of Trucker’s Pages. We have been contacting a few new advertisers and we keep being asked why they were not asked to advertise with us last year. If you are interested in seeing the book, or advertising in it, please contact me at 306384-5038 in Saskatchewan or Head office at 1-877-TRUX-411. I wish you all the best for the remainder of the year and hope things pick up more before the next issue comes out in November of this year.

Industry Updates COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SAFETY ENFORCEMENT UPDATE Having spent the better part of my weekend sorting out the mess that follows an overpass hit, it brought a few things to mind while dealing with the distraught driver involved. The details of the scenario were a bit unique, but the overall theme and story are familiar ones. As this publication is aptly named, it basically came down to the choices the driver made when faced with decisions. And like any unfortunate event, the wheels were turning toward calamity well before the heart-sinking ‘thunk’ of the excavator hitting the overpass. Not that the driver made intentionally bad decisions, (no one starts their day with a plan of infrastructure damage and highway closures), he simply made very ill-informed ones. The basic nutshell is this; an out-of-province driver, a veteran operator with and exemplary safety record, but with no experience in his new niche of the transportation industry: heavy haul. Completely unfamiliar with BC’s road network, permitting system, loading techniques and taking measurements, his new boss encouraged him he’d be fine and just go get the thing, load it up, chain it down and come back - he’ll worry about the rest. Although uncomfortable, he figured he’s a pro, he’ll give it a shot, fearing loss of the new job and that it will be a “learning experience”. After a day and a half wasted on attempting to load it by himself, he ended up paying two guys to load it for him, as well as chain it down. Once loaded, the boss obtained an oversize permit, (width only, no height requested). The permit was issued, routes were declared and things were looking up. Except that an integral piece of information was not given to the boss: the overall height. In return, a key bit data was not relayed to the driver: the oversize route. Not that the permitted route was entirely correct, but by shear default it would have safely arrived at its destination. Instead, the boss told the driver to go a shorter route, the driver did, and the rest is history. Now I understand completely that in most situations a driver has little sway in telling a boss they’re going to disobey orders. What I’m hoping is that any driver, regardless of situation, does not simply need to say ‘no’, but rather ask themselves some key questions before making some key choices. A wise man once said, “Never ask a question you don’t know the answer to”, but I don’t believe this would’ve helped our put upon driver. Rather, a wise driver might ask, “How do I know I can safely make it home?” If you’re not sure of the answer, starting finding out. You may in fact be just fine, but rolling based on a guess is exactly what our friend did. He was very unsure of himself and his load, but decided to cross his fingers and give it a go. This may work fine at the card table, but on the road we’re all at stake. This question can apply to any trip in any truck, and can cover everything from the mechanical condition of your vehicle to the security of your load to the amount of time it’ll take to get you there. Find your answers before the Page 20

Industry Updates COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SAFETY ENFORCEMENT UPDATE answers find you, (they always will). If you haven’t done a good trip inspection, how do you know you’re in good running condition? If you don’t know the size of that excavator, how do you know you’re not going to hit something, (or someone) along the way? No situation is perfect and we can’t predict the future, but we can prepare ourselves to the best our abilities, get the information we need, mitigate undue risk and make solid, professional, driver’s choices.

Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement BC Ministry of Transportation NATIONAL TRUCKING WEEK - SEPTEMBER 6 - 13, 2009 National Trucking Week Salutes the Men and Women who Keep the Freight Moving September 6 - 13, 2009 National Trucking Week is held annually to spotlight the important contributions made by the more than 500,000 Canadian men and women who keep the country’s freight moving. Trucking in Canada is a $67 billion industry and employees over 200,000 truck drivers. Trucks move 90 percent of all consumer products and foodstuffs within Canada and almost two thirds, by value, of our trade with the United States, our largest trading partner. Without trucking, the wheels of commerce would stop rolling and Canadians would be unable to enjoy a high quality of life. “Each year the week provides an opportunity to pause and consider the enormous reliance all Canadians have upon truck transportation,” says David Bradley, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Trucking Alliance. “It is undeniable that trucking is vital to our Canadian economy and touches the lives of every Canadian. The reality is whether a shipment needs to go from coast to coast or around the corner, it more than likely will travel by truck. We salute the people of the trucking industry, whether they work behind the scenes or over the road, which are the backbone of the Canadian economy.” Trucking is a diverse industry made up of a few large companies but dominated by thousands of small and medium-sized businesses and independent owner-operators. Members of the trucking industry and industry suppliers mark the week by recognizing truck drivers and other employees in a wide variety of ways,” says Bradley. The week also serves as a platform to enable the country’s trucking associations to deliver important information to the community about the vital role of the trucking industry and how all road users can be partners in safety. The date of this annual week is set each year by the Canadian Trucking Alliance in cooperation with the country’s seven provincial trucking associations.
