Welcome to DRK Magazine’s Inaugural Issue

G

reetings and a very warm welcome from the entire DRK Magazine’s production and management team. We couldn’t be more excited to present this inaugural issue of DRK Magazine to beautiful BC’s Lower Mainland community. Our entire team has worked tirelessly to produce a professional, high-calibre automobile and motorcycle magazine that will showcase, in English and Punjabi, the many different aspects of the industries. DRK Magazine is a welcome and needed addition to JGK Media Group’s list of publications and ventures. JGK Media has been a respected and established media group for over 8 years and has an impressive corporate client list. In this first issue, we showcase the 2014 Range Rover Evoque and 2014 Honda Civic Touring, and have given quick previews of some motorcycles and vehicles. Next, we have included a profile of the Cowell Auto Group and its family. The 2014 Vancouver International Auto Show was a great success and DRK Magazine was invited to the press conferences and model launches. Enjoy some of the pictures that we’ve included in this issue. We encourage you to read DRK Magazine from cover to cover and familiarize yourself with its sections and layout. In future issues, the magazine will be expanded to include more industry professionals who will provide the most up-to-date information about automobiles, motorcycles, the industry and its people. The DRK website is in development and should be operational within a very short time. The website will not only include digital versions of the magazine, but will feature video sections, a blog, industry updates, newsletter, and much much more. We encourage your feedback and suggestions. Drive and ride safe always. Godspeed.

Nissan recalling over one million vehicles for airbag issue

N

issan Motor Co is recalling 1,053,479 vehicles globally, mostly in the United States, to fix software that could deactivate the front passenger airbag. The vehicle occupant classification system software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty, deactivating the airbag and increasing the risk of an injury in a crash, according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Nissan identified two ac-

cidents in which the passenger airbag did not deploy, according to the NHTSA documents, but a Nissan spokesman said the company could not draw any conclusions about that being related to the software issue. The recall, which entails updating the software free of charge, is expected to begin in mid-April, according to the NHTSA documents. Affected vehicles include the 2013-2014 Altima sedan and Sentra small car and Pathfinder SUV; 2013-2014 Leaf electric car; the 2013 Infiniti JX35 crossover vehicle; and the 2014 Infiniti Q50 sedan and QX60 crossover; as well as the 2013 Nissan NV 200 cargo van, according to the NHTSA documents. Of the vehicles recalled, 989,701 were sold in the United State, about 60,000 in Canada and the rest in other markets, according to NHTSA and Nissan.

Honda recalls nearly 900,000 Odyssey vans for fire risk

Buzz

H

onda Motor Co is recalling nearly 900,000 Odyssey minivans that could catch fire, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a recall notice posted on Friday. In a March 13 filing with NHTSA, Honda said 2005-2010 Odysseys built in Alabama have a fuel-pump part that could crack and cause a fuel leak, increasing the risk of fire. The company said it has no reports of fires or injuries related to the problem. Because the recall involves 886,815 Odyssey vans, Honda said the proper repair parts won’t be available until summer. In the meantime, it will provide “interim” parts to customers, who will be notified beginning in April. Honda said it had investigated several potential causes of cracks in the fuel-pump strainer cover, including acid from chemicals found in car washes and low-PH materials used in fertilizer and dust control agents.

The fuel pump modules were made in the United States by Japanese supplier Denso, according to Honda. Honda said the recalled vans were built at its Lincoln, Alabama, plant from June 23, 2004, through September 4, 2010.

ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles

T

ransport Canada’s ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program (eTV) conducts in-depth safety, environmental and performance testing on a range of new and emerging advanced vehicle technologies for passenger cars and heavy-duty trucks. The Government of Canada has committed to developing increasingly stringent greenhouse gas emissions regulations for passenger cars and trucks, in alignment with the U.S. In order to meet these standards, manufacturers will introduce a wide range of technology innovations to improve vehicle efficiency over the next several years. Transport Canada’s eTV Program will help ensure that Canada is ready, and that Canadians can benefit from these new innovations. To achieve this, eTV is proactively testing and evaluating a range of new advanced vehicle technologies. Results are helping to inform the development of environmental and safety regulations to ensure that these technologies are introduced in Canada in a safe and timely manner. The program also supports the CanadaU.S. Regulatory Cooperation Council. Test results will help align vehicle regulations in North America to reduce and prevent barriers to cross-border trade, lowering costs for business and consumers, and supporting jobs and growth.

Back-up cameras required in cars by 2018 The National Highway Safety Transportation Agency (NHTSA) announced a new rule today that will require vehicles built from May 1, 2018 on to have a back-up camera. The rule applies to all road-legal vehicles under 10,000 pounds. Many cars today come with back-up cameras as either standard or optional equipment. When the driver puts the car in reverse, a display in the dashboard shows the image from a camera mounted at the rear of the car.

Some cars show a simple video feed from the rear camera, while others overlay distance and trajectory lines, the latter of which indicates the path of the car depending on how the wheels are turned. The NHTSA, under the US Department of Transportation, has been considering these rules for years. Congress passed a law requiring the Department of Transportation to come up with rules mandating rear-view cameras in 2008. In announcing the new require-

ment, NHTSA cites an average of 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries from back-up accidents every year. Canada is likely to follow in this initiative in the very near future.

The Root of It E

verybody loves a good success story. You know - the little guy with a dream, against all odds, and succeeding? What many don’t realize or fail to see is that most businesses are built on the back of hard work, a solid foundation, and essential values. There is no magic or easy way. Cowell Auto Group is just one of those modern day success stories, but it hasn’t come without a few growing pains. Luckily they started out with a core base, deep roots, and they grew organically – some might say - like a tree. Gary Cowell grew his automotive company over the past 45 years from just four staff and one Volkswagen dealership, to almost 200 staff and four dealerships - Cowell Volkswagen, Audi of Richmond, Land Rover of Richmond and Jaguar Richmond; making it the longest running dealer group in Richmond, and one of the oldest continuously owned and operated in Metro Vancouver. What impresses many is how Gary always stuck to his core values and passed these principles down to his sons Rand and Ryan, who now run the day-today operations of their successful company. When Gary Cowell was in his twenties he had a vision to open a 8

car dealership - he planted the seed, and in December 1967 he opened his first dealership selling Volkswagens. The roots grew deep, and the business flourished. Over the next four-plus decades he worked hard and grew his business into a healthy and thriving organization by remaining consistent in hiring great staff, and providing them with the resources they needed to give their customers a positive car buying and servicing experience. “It comes down to how we as an entire organization approach our brand. We want our customers to have the best possible experience when dealing with us,” explains Rand Cowell. “Many businesses are mainly focused on the sales transaction, and they miss the opportunity to build a relationship with their customer,” elaborates Ryan Cowell. “Cowell Auto Group wants to interact with our customers in a way that builds their respect and trust for us.” Rand agrees, “Yes, trust is the foundation for long term relationships, and we believe this why we have had some of the same customers for over 30 years.” They recently provided training to all of their staff on their service standards, and this standard is reinforced on a daily basis. This is definitely not the norm in the automotive industry, but as the Cowell Auto Group continues to grow and branch out, they want to ensure that they don’t dilute the customer experience.

DRK News / Views / Stuff Many businesses experienced the financial storm of the 80’s and then again in 2008; however, Cowell Auto Group managed to weather both these challenging times, and ultimately grew stronger. Ryan explains, “Like most businesses, we were also affected by the 2008 financial crisis. We had to make sure that our people understood our long-term For 45 years, we have been a leader in the automotive vision and goals, industry whichbywas to take care of our cusensuring that we are continually focussed on Ultimately, you. We told them to keep focusing on making sure the customers were happy.” All of the manufacturers that the Cowells work with have significant growth plans moving forward, and in order for the Cowell Auto Group to handle the new developments and to continue to be leaders in the automotive industry, they are in the process of developing two new properties. A couple of their current dealerships were built 20 plus years ago and they have since outgrown them. Audi of Richmond and Cowell Volkswagen will have new dealerships built, and Land Rover of Richmond and Jaguar Richmond will have a renovated and expanded dealership. Rand states, “We will continue to look at new opportunities, as long as they fit our core values of being market leaders in providing excellent products and services, and in providing the best customer experience.” They also continue to be leaders when it comes to being environmentally friendly. They have worked with BC Hydro in the past, and they looked at ways of being energy-efficient in their dealerships, such as changing the types of lights they use. As they begin the process of building new facilities, they are exploring different ‘green building’ possibilities. “We are reviewing rain water capturing, using gray water for washing cars, and reducing our footprint by storing vehicles on the roof of the building,” explains Rand. Gary Cowell continues to look at the long-term goals of the company, and the strategy moving forward. Like many privately owned businesses in BC that were started by baby boomers, Gary has passed the day-to-day operations down to the next generation, Ryan and Rand. “This transition has been rather seamless, but we have also taken a lot of steps to make sure that we are on top of all of the moving pieces,” says Rand. “We both took the “Road Map” program through the Sauder School of Business, which focuses on running a family company.” “Our whole family has also been very much a part of the transition. Our sister and our wives have been a huge part of the success of our business, and our vision moving forward,” explains Ryan. Gary Cowell grew his company from the ground up, and with deep roots. He ensured that it had everything it needed to thrive - excellent staff, healthy and honest core values, and the ability to adapt to new and challenging environments. It now stands strong 45 years later as a leader in the automotive industry, with a loyal customer base, a vibrant leadership team, and an exciting growth plan for the future. Deep roots, solid core, and growing strong - just like a tree.

Top Maintenance Tips for your Vehicle Compared to their previous generations, modern cars don’t require much in terms of maintenance. Long gone are the days of regular oil changes, lubes, and tune-up’s that were vital in keeping your car running in tip-top shape. Looking under the hood of any modern vehicle can be daunting because there are very limited exposed areas; everything is under covers and the new motors and other engine compartment technology can only be worked on my properly trained technicians. That being said, there are things that every owner should do to prolong the life of his or her car. I speak from experience because my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee has over 410,000 km and still has lots of life left in her. After speaking with technicians from a variety of backgrounds, we’ve compiled the Top Maintenance Tips that will keep your car

running efficiently for a long time. 1. Tire Inflation - Tires leak naturally and need the occasional check. Figuratively speaking, underinflated tires suck up gasoline. Under- or overinflated tires wear out sooner, and deliver the same emergency maneuver handling as marshmallows. Optimally, you should be checking for proper tire pressure on a monthly basis. 2. Wiper Blades – If you can’t see properly, chances are you more likely to hit something. Changing wiper blades on a yearly basis is not expensive but can save you agony when driving in poor driving conditions. The best time to change wiper blades is in the fall. 3. Octane Level – Higher octane levels are not necessarily any better for your car. Use the recommended octane level fuel for your car. If your car doesn’t require premium

fuel, then you’re only padding the pockets of the oil companies. 4. “Tune-ups” – Technically speaking, there are no more “tune-ups.” Gone are the days of adjusting vales, ignition timing, and carburetors. Today’s engines don’t need expensive tuning and spark plug replacement for almost 100,000 km. Don’t spend money where it’s not needed; rather, spend the money on making sure the timing belt is changed according to vehicle specifications. 5. Oil Changes – Newer model cars don’t require oil changes every 5,000 km. Advancements in engine lubricants and engine design make oil changes something to be done when the schedule calls for it. Some cars have a 10,000 km interval while others are good for up to 20,000 km. Follow the schedule in your owner’s manual.

6. Air and Cabin Filters – Dirty air filters can greatly reduce fuel economy. If the engine isn’t breathing properly, then it’s sucking up more gas to compensate. Check and replace the air and cabin filters according to vehicle recommendations, but also use common sense. If you live in an area with more dust, chances are you need to replace them sooner. 7. Brakes – If you can’t stop, you’re in trouble. If your breaks do not feel right, get them checked immediately. When applying the brakes, if your car pulls to a side, pulsates, or you hear squeaks or noises, chances are you need to replace the pads and/or rotors. 8. Tighten the Gas Cap – No joke! One of the most common reasons for the check engine light to come on is a loose fuel cap

because it breaks or causes errors in the fuel system’s venting mechanism. 9. Junk in the Trunk – Fuel economy is also reduced by extra weight in the car. If you’re carrying around a full sized spare (when only doing city driving), golf clubs, extra boxes of items, then you’re flushing money down the drain. Lose the extra weight and only carry what you need in the car. 10. Clean your Car – We don’t like wearing dirty clothes so why keep a dirty car. Wash the vehicle on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, using a proper car wash soap, and clean the inside – this will preserve the look of your car for a long time. In the winter months, rinse off the salt and sand regularly. By - D. Sooch

2014 Evoque Extended Review

/ FIRST DRIVE / 12

April 2014

ince my teens, I have always been fascinated with the Land Rover brand – whenever I watched movies of heroes driving a prestigious off-road vehicle, it was usually a full-sized Land Rover or Range Rover. Fast forward to 2012 when Range Rover introduced the contemporary Evoque line, and I was even more fascinated. Range Rover knew they needed to add a smaller vehicle to its line-up to capture a diverse audience, and it had done it. Now in its 3rd year of production, the Evoque continues to be a hot-selling SU-crossover, with even more impressive specs. Our review vehicle was provided by Land Rover of Richmond, the premier Land Rover retailer in Canada. What can you say about the Evoque’s exterior styling other than wow! This vehicle demands attention and respect, which it gets. It is also one of the few vehicles that has successfully fused traditional Land Rover cues with contemporary design elements. For example, the front end has hints of Land Rover, especially in the grill and hood. Depending on trim of choice, the lower bumper is either aggressive and bold, or elegant and refined. As you move to the sides, the rising beltline, along with the muscular shoulder and tapered, sloping roofline, give the Evoque an athletic appearance. From

the rear, the styling clearly reflects the bold off-road capabilities of the vehicle, with a small rear window, high bumper, and dual exhaust pipes. One would think that the Evoque would have sub-standard outward visibility, but surprisingly, it does not. That’s because all the windows, front, side, and rear, have been placed at the driver’s eye line. This vehicle is definitely eye-candy for people of all ages, which is reflected in its high sales numbers. Step inside the Evoque and prepare to be awestruck with the lines, flow, and curves of everything from the dash and center console to the seats and ginormous panoramic roof. For those of you who know your interiors, you’ll notice some mix of Ford and Volvo, and that’s because when the Evoque was being designed, Range Rover and Volvo were both still owned by Ford. Don’t get me wrong – the sleek interior is a masterpiece and still purely Range Rover in look, feel, and fit and finish. The center console has some of the controls for audio and climate, while the floating center touchscreen controls most everything else from navigation, settings, parking assist, and Bluetooth connectivity. For Canadian consumers, a heated front

windshield is standard. The front seats are very comfortable and offer good legroom, while there is adequate legroom for adult passengers in the rear. Even though this is a compact vehicle, the large moonroof gives a much more open and airy feeling. Pressing the start button brings this Rover to life and the shifter, clearly from Jaguar, rises from the center console. The lightweight, direct-injected, turbocharged 4WD 2.0 litre engine, borrowed from Ford, produces 240hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough power to launch the Evoque from 0-60 in just 7.1 seconds, while maintaining excellent fuel economy. The engine is mated to a brand new nine-speed – that’s right, you read correctly, nine-speed automatic gearbox. The previous six-speed was very good, but this new ZF transmission is just superb, providing a smoother drive and increasing fuel economy by 11%. Also new is a four-wheel drive system that disengages at speeds above 35 km/hr, thus reducing load on the drivetrain. Of course, should grip be necessary, the four-wheel drive system engages in just 300 milliseconds. Driving the Evoque is not like driving your typical Range Rover. April 2014

2014 Evoque Extended Review It is noticeably stiffer around corners and over bumps; but remember that this vehicle is smaller, shorter, and more ‘car-like’ in driveability. None-the-less, the ride is quite smooth thanks to the new MagneRide and Adaptive Dynamics technology, which monitors the vehicle 1,000 times per second. The Evoque is very easy to maneuver and is a breeze to drive around the city. Parking is made very simple with the automatic parking assist technology, where through the use of cameras, the Evoque is able to parallel park itself. I know this technology is not new, but it sure is amazing. On the highway, the Evoque offered a very smooth and quiet ride, and the electric steering provided exceptional feedback. For a smaller compact vehicle, the Evoque was firmly planted and I had complete confidence driving on the rainsoaked and snow-covered streets. While on a quick trip to Squamish, the Evoque was quite nimble and I SPECS & TECHS was able to throw it into the curves easily. This is a very fun vehicle to Base Price: $47,695 drive! Although I didn’t have the Price as tested: $55,944 opportunity to take the Evoque offroad, I was assured by Land Rover Engine: 2.0 L - 4 cylinder Canada that the vehicle is more than Transmission: 9-speed automatic capable and lives up the brand’s Torque (lb-ft): 250 name. Horsepower: 240 One of the most important aspects of driving in today’s world is Fuel Efficiency (Combined): 8.4 (L/100km) the ability to connect the driver to the vehicle. Range Rover has done an exceptional job in its voice operated controls of Bluetooth, navigation, and audio. I had no problems in placing calls, changing audio inputs, and setting a destination on the navigation system. Playback of audio on the Meridian sound system was music to the ears and made the daily commute more than enjoyable. The only complaint I have is that the Evoque does not have the ability to dictate/show, or reply to, text messages. Yes, it is a minor complaint and is not a deterrent for choosing this vehicle. The Range Rover Evoque, like its older siblings, has a plethora of safety features to ensure driver and passenger safety: Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Alert, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Park Exit, hilldescent, and Parking Assist Cameras are just some of these. This Rover is available in a number of trims: Pure, Pure Plus, Pure Premium, Prestige,

“this new ZF transmission is just superb” and Dynamic. Go for the Pure Premium or Prestige because you will have all the premium features you need without breaking the bank. The Pure starts at $47,965 while the Pure Premium and Prestige will run in the mid to high $50K mark. The Evoque is one of the best premium compact SU-crossovers available. Yes, it is probably a few thousand more than its competitors, but it has the attitude and style that the others don’t. You need to drive it to really experience it. 14

2014 Honda CBR 600RR

2014 Yamaha R6

The Honda CBR 600RR has been a favourite of sportbike riders for decades. While being a highly performance oriented superbike, it is still more than capable of being an everyday commuter bike. Honda seems to have attained the perfect balance for someone looking for a pure track bike that can be ridden on a daily basis. The 2014 600RR retains its 599cc displacement and has a compression ratio of 12.2:1, with redline at 15,000 rpm. For 2014, Honda has added more aluminum parts to keep the weight down. The two-stage ram-air system provides a high volume of cool air to the airbox for linear power delivery and exceptional engine performance. Finally, the line-beam headlamps allow for excellent night time visibility. I have owned 2 CBR’s in the past and they are impressive machines. The 2014 model is priced at $12,099.

The 2014 Yamaha R6 is a beast – period. Rated at over 122 hp, this superbike will scare the novice rider in an instant. It is a 599 cc displacement scream machine that wants to be pushed to its limits. The Deltabox aluminum frame has been Yamaha’s strongpoints since the late 1980’s and keeps the bike rigid and stable. The R6 utilizes a large single intake duct that “force-feeds” high-pressure cold air into the intake tract for optimal combustion and greater horsepower at higher speeds. Also, the air injection system injects fresh air into the exhaust ports to fully burn any unburnt fuel in order to reduce CO and HC exhaust emissions. Yamaha has kept its side exhaust system as compared to a rear system. Call me biased but the R6 has been the most favourite superbike I’ve ever owned. The 2014 model is priced at $11,999.

2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe

2014 Range Rover Autobiography Black LWB

The 2015 F-Type Coupe, in Canadian showrooms spring 2014, has to be one of the most anticipated cars this year. While the F-Type convertible stole automobile enthusiasts’ hearts last year, the uuber sexy all-aluminum coupe has “serious drivers” drooling with desire. The seductive sweeping roofline, with a rear window, reminds us of the E-Type Coupe. Buyers can opt for either aluminum or panoramic glass roof panels that are bonded into the main roof structure – torsional rigidity is identical regardless of which roof is fitted. While it seems there is no spoiler, there is a hidden rear air deflector that deploys above 70 mph. The base engine will be a supercharged 3.0 liter V-6 which will produce about 380 hp while the F-Type R coupe will feature the supercharged V8, pumping out 550 horses. Although no definite price has been announced, we can expect a base price around $72,000. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of this one.

The 2014 Vancouver International Auto Show was the perfect venue for the Canadian debut of the Range Rover Autobiography Black Long Wheel Base (LWB). While some question the $180,000+ sticker price, this rare SUV is said to “represent the pinnacle” of luxury off-road capability – we can’t argue here. The LWB adds 7.3 inches of rear legroom, power rear sunshades, rear 10.2” screens, LED mood lamps, distinct new front grill, huge wheels, and special badging. Want more? Well, all seats are massage and climate equipped, with the rear seats having a 17 degrees recline; the passenger-side rear seat also has built-in ottomans. Remember, these features are above and beyond the fully equipped full-size Range Rover. Canada is receiving a limited number of this limited edition Rover, but guess what? All have already been sold, with the largest volume sold right here in the Lower Mainland of BC. Now you can travel on any road in pure luxury.

your

It’s responsibility by: Jasleen Dutt

I

remember in my younger years traveling all around the Lower Mainland on a daily basis in our late model import. My sister, brother, and I used to sit in the back seat while our parents sat in the front. Nothing abnormal right? It would surprise most people today that back then, hardly anybody wore seatbelts or used child seats. Maybe it was because people drove more carefully, speed limits were obeyed, and there were less distractions. Today, even though child car seats are the law, the number of parents who allow their young children to travel in cars without the use of proper child safety restraints is unacceptable. Of all children killed in motor vehicles accidents, about 30% were unrestrained, with the remaining deaths resulting from improper use of a restraint or seat belt. Most of these needless deaths are preventable. Child seats come in three categories: rear-facing for infants; forward-facing, five-point restraints; and booster seat. Using each of these three systems properly will ensure the maximum safety for your precious little ones. Infants should be placed in rear-facing seats until they are 2 years of age AND at least 20 pounds. Even though some infants may become finicky, keep them rear-facing until the recommended time. I kept my

daughters in rear-facing seats until they were almost 3 years of age. The next stage is the forward facing seat and children should be kept in these until they are at least 4 years of age AND 40 pounds. The final stage is the booster seat, which holds children up to 8 years of age or 80 pounds or 4’9”. Remember that these are only guidelines, but err on the side of caution. Buy new child seats from a Canadian retailer (US seats do NOT qualify) and do not use an expired car seat. Also, keep children in the back seat until they reach the age of 13, when they can travel in the

front seat. Children are our most valuable asset. It is more important to spend the extra time and keep them buckled properly rather than take a chance, even for short trips around the block.

Vancouver International

Auto Show The 2014 VIAS allowed auto enthusiasts to surround themselves with family, classic, collector, luxury, sport and supercars and trucks. The impressive 6-day event also showcased the newest innovations in technology, green initiatives, and driver comfort. Before opening for the public, press and media were invited for the new vehicle launches, and DRK Magazine was on-hand for the unveilings. One of the most impressive vehicles to debut was the sleek McLaren 650S supercar, which features a turbocharged V8 capable of producing 641 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Three other personal favourites were the new 2015 Jaguar F-Type R coupe, the Range Rover Autobiography Black LWB and of course, the new fully electric BMW i8 concept. European brand Audi unveiled the new A3 and its head-snapping R8, while Volkswagen introduced the new Golf line-up, which is priced less than last year’s models. On the domestic side, Ford unveiled its new F-150, which now produces more horsepower with their eco-Boost engine. Chevy made an impressive stance with the fresh red Camaro Z-28 and showcased the innovative Cruze diesel. Chrysler’s new 200 looked sharp and should sell well again. The import lineup was equally impressive, with Kia unveiling the Soul EV for the first time in Canada, which is capable of up to 200+ km per single charge. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Mazda, and Subaru also brought in their top models. For the classic and exotic seekers, there was everything from a 1967 Mustang Fastback to the much desired Ferrari and Lamborghini models. The 2014 Vancouver International Auto Show was a real crowd pleaser in every sense and we can’t wait for next year’s show. 18

n our last test review of the 2014 Honda Pilot Touring Edition, I mentioned that the Honda line is one of my all-time favourites. Why? Simply put, Honda has a reputation for building reliable, functional, and excellently engineered vehicles at a great price. To add to Honda’s collection of titles, the Civic has been Canada’s best-selling car for 15 years. Our review vehicle was provided by OpenRoad Honda, in Burnaby. I’m glad that the designers of Honda decided to give the Civic a mild make-over,

considering the car was just revamped last year. Unlike last year’s model, that had a bland exterior and cheap looking interior, the 2014 Civic is easy on the eyes. A lower, open-mouthed front bumper, with honeycomb inserts and chrome accents, give the car a sportier stance, which is a welcome change to previous conservative looks. The stylish 17-inch wheels, standard on the Touring Edition, enhance the sportiness and provide a more upscale look to the car. The taillights are now integrated into the trunk, making the rear of the car look classy and so-

Should You Buy a CVT Equipped Car?

T

hanks to some crafty engineering, you may never have to experience “Shift Shock” again. Here’s how a CVT delivers that smooth driving experience. HOW IT WORKS Imagine the CVT like a bicycle’s gear system. It’s made up of a pulley system, with cones at each pulley, all connected by a chain belt. These cones move closer together or further apart to increase or decrease the diameter at which the belt operates. The ratio here is important, and is selected automatically based on factors like gas pedal position, vehicle speed and engine speed.

What all this means is that a CVT doesn’t shift at all like a traditional gearbox. The ratios are always changing in order to find the perfect combination for speed, fuel efficiency or both. Some CVTs even come with buttons to help shift between pre-set ratios which helps mimic a traditional automatic.

The first time you drive a car with a CVT, you’ll know. The feel of a CVT can be odd. The rpm of the engine can fluctuate a lot while driving, especially when accelerating. Or when accelerating hard, they’ll just sit unchanged at a lofty rpm level while the car pulls forward.

Compared to an automatic or manual transmission, a CVT is much smoother. Feeling like one really long gear, in reality its a nearly infinite collection of gears all meshed together. CLEAR BENEFITS Many cars nowadays are being sold with CVTs instead of traditional automatics, mainly because of their efficiency. In fact, the new 2013 Nissan Altima (above, read our review here) uses a CVT transmission and is rated as the most fuel efficient mid-size sedan on the market with a 38 mpg highway rating. In addition, almost all hybrids use CVT transmissions, including the Prius, helping maximize fuel economy. While drawbacks in terms of responsiveness are usually noted by driving “enthusiasts”, Continuously Variable Transmissions have one key advantage over their automatic and manual counterparts. When driving up hills, where traditional automatics can struggle, a CVT can seamlessly provide power without shifting. Even-speed hill driving can prove to be a tough endeavour for novice manual transmission drivers. We actually praised the CVT in the Scion iQ (read our review here) for delivering exactly this sort of responsiveness on the hills in San Francisco, despite a tiny 1.3-liter engine and just 94 hp.

Nissan has been selling cars with CVTs for quite some time now, and has

had considerable success introducing the new transmission type into the market. According to Steve Yaeger, from Nissan North America, “With coming CAFE and CO2 emissions regulations requiring better fuel economy and lower emissions, the CVT gives the Nissan lineup an attractive alternative to conventional automatics that is more efficient on both fronts.” NOISY, AND WHAT ABOUT RELIABILITY? Still, CVTs are having a tough time breaking into the market. It turns out that many drivers don’t like the loud and strange noise of their car’s engine revving wildly. Many drivers liken the sound, and the feeling, to that of a slipping clutch. Additionally, CVTs are usually less likely to be paired with higher horsepower, or higher torque engines. Lastly, not all CVTs are well equipped to deal with towing.

Additionally, the reliability of the modern CVT has yet to be tested. The Nissan Murano (seen above) was the first car Nissan offered with only a CVT, and it had some pretty serious problems. Some were so bad that the whole transmission had to be replaced. However, since then, Nissan has extended the warranty of the transmission to 10 years/120,000 miles. That should help alleviate any fear buyers may have over the reliability of getting a car with a CVT.

If you enjoy revving your car to its redline, and feeling the thrust as your car shifts, then maybe a CVT isn’t for you at all. For those types, you may want to try your hand at a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) if you want to have a sporty feel and keep an automatic. Otherwise, the CVT is a fine choice in the world of economical cars. Many hybrid vehicles use a form of CVT to get such high mile per gallon numbers. It’s good with fuel, and smooth. Sorry about the noise though, but you might just get used to it. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT In summary, there are a few advantages to getting a vehicle with a CVT: It’s good on gas, gives a relatively smooth ride, and is versatile enough for daily driving. It also has a few drawbacks. It’s nowhere near as fun or engaging as a dual clutch automatic or manual transmission. It can also make quite a racket when accelerating hard. Keep these points in mind when looking at your next car. A CVT can help make or break the purchase, so be sure to know what you want, and how the transmission plays a part in it.

Choosing the Right Helmet Whether you are buying a new motorcycle helmet or evaluating your existing head protection, there is a lot to consider when deciding which helmet is right for you. Here are four things to consider when getting a new, or replacement, helmet. Helmet Safety Ratings When you shop for a helmet, the first thing you’ll want to see is the DOT, Snell, or ECE sticker proving the helmet design meets the safety standards and provides these primary functions: • Impact protection • Penetration protection • Retention Your helmet protects you from impact by distributing the force across the outer shell and the impact-absorbing liner expanded polystyrene, or EPS. You should know that once you have suffered an impact, the shell and EPS systems are compromised and you’ll need to replace the helmet. Take comfort in knowing your helmet did its job. Penetration protection comes from the outer shell, which is designed and tested against typical road hazards like flying objects. Some shells are also scratch resistant, which means they won’t be marked by rogue bugs, rocks, or sticks. Finally, the retention system must keep the helmet on your head during an impact. The DOT, Snell, or ECE certified models are tested for retention. How well your helmet fastens and stays on your head will depend on not only the retention system, but also the fit. Fit and Comfort Fit and comfort aren’t always the same thing. Your helmet must fit snugly, tight enough so that you can’t pull it off by grabbing the back and yanking forward. You should feel your skin moving with the helmet as you wiggle the shell around. Many helmets come with adjustable padding to help shape the helmet to your head. You should feel the padding against the top and front of your head. If you have a full-face or open-face helmet, the padding will lock in your cheeks and chin, too. Some riders try on dozens of helmets before they are satisfied with the fit. If your helmet doesn’t fit snugly, you won’t get the protection you expect. Testing the helmet on a short bike ride is a great way to measure the fit and the comfort. Comfort features include air vents, padding, and noise control. Many helmets have vents on the top of the helmet to cool your crown and on the front (full-face only) to cool your face and chin. Air vents can change the flow of air over the helmet, with the disadvantage of extra drag. Still, the flow of fresh air often outweighs the decrease in aerodynamics in the minds of riders. Padding can be adjustable to fit your face. Everyone has different features and your cheekbones, nose, forehead, and jaw will be the most comfortable if you can personalize the padding and comfort liner. You will want to feel pressure from the padding, but not enough to become painful or distracting. Padding around the ears can also add to the comfort of your ride. DRK News / Views / Stuff the ear helps to block out wind sounds and improve attunement to engine noises. If your hearing seems muffled at first, be patient and you may grow to like the effect especially on long trips. Cost Many factors contribute to the cost of your helmet, and settling on a budget can be difficult because it’s hard to put a price on safety. Fortunately, there are many good certified helmets available in a wide range of styles and prices. Special graphics can increase the cost of your helmet. If you’re willing to forgo some style, you can save money. Extras like air vents and adjustable padding can also drive up the helmet cost. Even face shields, which seem standard today, add to the cost. Sometimes you can negotiate the helmet price if you are also buying a motorcycle. Many dealers recognize the advantage of keeping you as a satisfied customer for many years to come; perhaps they’ll budge a little on the helmet price. Helmet Styles There are several major categories of helmet styles: • Full coverage. • Open face. • Shorty. The full-coverage style has a chin bar as part of the outer shell. This style offers the most protection from impact and penetration hazards add a face shield, and you’re protected from the neck up. You may opt for the open-face helmet; think of a more traditional look, with a chin strap and no face shield. This helmet has more coverage than a shorty, but without the face shield you give up protection from insects and wind. Shorty helmets are popular with many bikers because they resemble old-fashioned helmets. Although there is less coverage, this style still passes the DOT standard for impact and penetration protection. A shorty helmet must fit snugly enough to stay on during a crash. When deciding on your helmet style, consider color, too. A bright, conspicuous color will improve your chances of being seen by other drivers. Many bikers are hit by cars because the motorist didn’t even see the motorcycle. As you can see, selecting a helmet might take you just as long as choosing a motorcycle. You want your riding experience to be fun and safe; selecting the helmet that is right for your head is a critical part of your safety gear. If you are ever in a crash, you will be glad you invested the time and money in a quality motorcycle helmet.
