DRK Editorial

Something for everyone. DRK Magazine’s management team is excited to present the 3rd issue of the only bilingual automobile and motorcycle magazine in the Lower Mainland. As always, the magazine is filled with reviews, articles, and other information for drivers and riders alike, both male and female. If you’re like me, you remember watching movies many many years ago which showed self-driving cars. We all thought that such technology was not in the near future – well fast forward to now, and companies such as Google have already built and are testing these self-driving cars. We’ve provided a quick look at this new initiative by Google. Keeping with technology, our tech wizard gives a run-down of radar detectors and laser jammers, and how they work. While we don’t encourage speeding, we are here to present the latest in gadgets and technology. With the sun shining and longer days, we’re seeing more and more motorcycle riders on the road. Once again, we encourage all drivers and riders to share the road and be safe. I’ve been an avid motorcycle rider for over 20 years and last week, I had the chance to do a quick tour of the new 2014 Honda CBR 600RR, which you can read about in issue – what a phenomenal machine. We’ve also included in-depth reviews of the 2014 BMW 328 diesel and the 2014 Honda Accord Touring Edition, both amazing cars. As always, enjoy the Quick-Looks section, which features some of our favourites. For those looking at buying your first car, we’ve included our top list of cars for first time buyers. There are many economical choices for first time buyers, based on need and wants. Finally, read from a mother’s perspective about road safety. With Father’s Day approaching, make sure to give your dad, or other fatherly figure, a great big hug, and he may enjoy some of the gift ideas we’ve highlighted in this issue. Wishing you all safe riding and safe driving.

New Licence Plate Scanning Technology The OPP is investing in new car-mounted cameras capable of scanning two licence plates per second. The goal is to target suspended drivers or those with expired plates. The Chatham-Kent OPP has one cruiser equipped with two cameras right now, 30 are to be rolled out across the province in the coming months.

All-new Volvo XC90 Officially Launched

“It allows us to capture a number of vehicles travelling down the roadway where an officer travelling down the roadway may only be able to capture one plate at a time,” says OPP Constable Christopher Hogg. “The old school way of doing this was simply driving down the roadway and trying to look at the little validation sticker on the back licence plate and then running it with the provincial communications centre to get the information back, now it does all of that within about a half a second.” The system is also capable of scanning for specific licence plates during an amber alert when a child is missing and there is a suspect vehicle description.

Motorcyclists Face New Graduated License System in NB

One of the most anticipated car launches of recent years Volvo’s all-new XC90 - begins today. Volvo Cars has created a launch programme that will unveil the car from the inside out, meaning that it will start by disclosing the many new interior features of the car and culminate in the full external reveal in August. The original XC90 was launched in 2002, and it revolutionised the SUV segment with its combination of space, versatility and safety. It went on to become a global sales phenomenon. As will be made clear in coming weeks, the all-new XC90 will also be a transformational vehicle in its market segment. The story of the latest advancements within safety and interior air quality will be released in late July/early August, while the reveal of the technology highlights, including chassis and powertrains, will start in mid-July and continue throughout the summer until the exterior launch at the end of August.

The Department of Public Safety is bringing in rules for new motorcycle riders next spring that will include a graduated licence system and a mandatory safety course. Public Safety Minister Bruce Northrup introduced changes this spring that are designed to keep those motorcyclists safe. The new rules were among a series of bills that were passed on Wednesday when the legislative assembly adjourned for the summer. The new graduated licence system will start on April 1, 2015. The rules are similar to those imposed on people who are getting an automobile licence for the first time: • motorcyclists must maintain zero per cent blood alcohol content • motorcyclists may not have any passengers • motorcyclists may not ride between sunset and sunrise • motorcyclists must remain in the graduated licence category for at least 12 months. Old Junk Cars: The New Apple of the Eye of Car Thieves The belief that only new model cars are being stolen is a total myth. Car thieves are exploring their markets and are now investing more time and effort in stealing old junk cars for they can get more value from them. So why are old cars more attractive for thieves? It is because old cars are much easier to steal (as people might think they are too old for thieves) and their parts can be sold at higher prices more than the value of the car. Toyota and Honda cars, for example, are durable models that have a good market each year, thereby increasing the opportunities for selling replacement parts. In slow economies, people tend to keep their cars for a longer period of time. The demand for replacement parts in these countries are growing as well. And car theft for these old used cars is a growing “economy” for car thieves too. So, to avoid your old car from being stolen, use an anti-theft device.

Nissan Wows Fans with 370Z NISMO Reveal

The Japanese car company arrived at this year’s ZDayZ -- the annual gathering of American Nissan and Datsun performance car enthusiasts -- with a surprise guest: the latest iteration of its hardcore sports coupe. Due to hit the dealerships in July, the 2015 370Z NISMO is more a subtle reworking than a complete overhaul. It still has a 350-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine under the hood, but suspension has been tweaked significantly for the new model so more of that power can be used more of the time. But for the first time, the car will be offered with a seven-speed automatic transmission complete with rev-matching on the downchange and a manual mode complete with paddle shifts. However, the purists needn’t worry as the six-speed manual transmission is still alive and well and will continue to be offered as the standard configuration on the car. Apart from the transmission, the biggest 8

changes are in terms of exterior styling and internal in-car tech and comfort. The car gets new alloy wheels and a redesigned aerodynamics package which includes a smaller rear spoiler. Inside, the sports seats have been redesigned in collaboration with Recaro, meaning that they’re exclusive to the 370Z NISMO and have been developed to offer comfort, feedback and support tuned to the car’s handling and performance characteristics. And they’re trimmed in leather and Alcantara too. Other new toys include a hard-drive based navigation system with 7-inch touch screen, a Bose sound system, reversing camera and everything the connected driver needs to synch a smartphone handset to the dashboard. When the car goes on sale this summer, the 370Z NISMO will be offered in a choice of just four colours -- red, black, silver or white. The car’s reveal was one of the highlights of this year’s ZDayZ, which was held in North Carolina and concludes Monday. As well as giving fans the chance to see the 370Z NISMO before anyone else in the world, the event offers racing, a car show, fine dining and mountain road drives.

New GM Recall Adds 2.4 Million More Vehicles

General Motors added 2.4 million American vehicles to its growing recall list recently, bringing the total number it has recalled to 13.6 million this year. The company has yet to release a detailed list of how many Canadian vehicles might be affected, but an analysis of numbers provided to CBC by the automaker suggest there could be as many as 170,000 cars, SUVs and pickups in Canada affected by the new recall. The company says it isn’t aware of any fatalities related to the new recalls, but it expects to take a $400-million charge in the second quarter as a precaution, to repair the vehicles.

BMW Sales Soaring

After a record setting first quarter, BMW is following suit with another alltime sales high in April 2014. A BMW press release says sales were up 12 percent in comparison with April 2013. The 16,344 motorcycles and maxi scooters supplied to customers worldwide this April make it the most successful month in the history of BMW Motorrad. The new R1200GS is, as expected, BMW’s top-selling model, accounting for 9,826 of the units sold.

Car Chassis, Home Walls to Turn into Batteries Soon

The days when you have to look around for a functioning plug point to charge your phone or laptop may be numbered. Researchers have now developed a material that can turn your phone casings, car chassis or even walls into batteries! With the new material, you can soon have electric cars or even aircraft powered by energy stored in their chassis or even home where the walls can light up your house. Called supercapacitor, the small dull grey wafer-shaped materials that the researchers created can store electricity by assembling electrically charged ions on the surface of a porous material, instead of storing it in chemical reactions the way batteries do. As a result, supercapacitors can charge and discharge in minutes, instead of hours, and operate for millions of cycles instead of thousands of cycles like batteries.

Excitement for New Honda Crossover The automotive industry is ever-evolving. Automakers are creating new models and innovations in technology to keep up with rising industry standards. Customer expectations have also lead car manufacturers to up their car-making efforts. One such brand is Honda, an industry leader in the auto-

motive world. Honda’s latest advancement is an addition to their lineup. New for this year is the 2015 Honda HR-V. The HR-V is an a compact crossover SUV, much smaller than some of Honda’s other SUV offerings such as the Pilot. Made with urban living in mind, the HR-V’s small build is ideal for the cramped environs of the city. Recently, it had been officially unveiled by Honda at the New York Auto Show. The HR-V made impressions based on its fuel-efficiency, modern appearance, and surprising amount of space. The Honda “Magic Seat” comes with the vehicle. This feature offers multiple backseat configurations to accommodate for passengers and cargo. The vehicle is slated to be available this winter.

ith changing fuel efficiency standards, more and more vehicle makers are coming up with unique ways to meet the 2016 regulations. Whereas other manufacturers have turned to hybrid technology, diesel, or smaller motors, BMW has combined some of these to introduce the new 328d (diesel). Not only is this 4-cylinder turbo diesel sedan more fuel efficient, it produces more power than the previous gas version inline 6-cylinder.

2014 BMW 328d - xDrive

Legacy Retained BMW introduced a diesel with the 335d a few years ago, but due to the lack of xDrive and its so-so fuel efficiency, sales were not as high as expected. Mind you, that 335d did produce a tire-scorching 425 ft-lbs of torque. Fast forward to 2014, and the new BMW 328d sedan is causing quite a stir with buyers. The exterior of the 2014d is retained from the 2012 3-series make-over and in my humble opinion, this is a great looking car. Tailored lines, an aggressive front end, and an overall larger, wider body make this car look great, whether standing or moving. Three trim lines are available: Sport, Modern, and Luxury, and my test vehicle was a beautiful Havanna Metallic 328d equipped with the Modern Line package. The vehicle came loaded with most of the bells and whistles, such as the Premium Package, Comfort Package, Lighting Package, Navigation Package, and of course, xDrive. When the 3-series underwent a complete and dramatic overhaul in 2012, I applauded the welcome changes. For those of you who remember, the previous generation of the 3-series

12

June 2014

was a “snug” car, with limited spacing for rear passengers. This new body is now wider and longer; in fact, it’s now almost the same size as a 5-series from 10 years ago. Now, the new 3-series can be considered a great family car. Being a sports-car oriented guy, I would surely add a lip spoiler to the rear for a more aggressive look. The inside of the 328d is quite nice and simple, but a tad bland at the same time. When the vehicle was overhauled in 2012, BMW designers should have taken the opportunity to introduce a more contemporary interior. That being said, BMW did an excellent job in using only the best soft plastics on the lower dash and along the door trims – there is much less chance of these areas being scratched or scuffed compared to earlier trim plastics. Since the vehicle is now larger and wider, there is excellent room for all occupants; during the test drive, one of my friends, who is over 6 feet tall, expressed how he didn’t feel cramped in the rear anymore. Kudos to BMW for getting this right.

BMW 328d-xDrive

2014

“The new 328d also has a fantastic suspension that adjusts to how you drive the car” The iDrive system is getting better and more user friendly, but still lacks the refinement of Audi’s Multi-Media Interface, which is just so much more intuitive. In defence of BMW though, it still makes one of the best LCD screens on the market. Colours are rich, images are crisp and clear, and the 3D navigational graphics are very detailed. The screen also shows off one of the best Surround View systems in any car in the industry, and all buyers should definitely pay for this package because it is invaluable when parking. One question, however, that I have is why does such a good-looking screen look like an aftermarket bolt-on? Previous generations had the screen molded into the dash, whereas this new design looks out of

place. You missed the ball on this one, BMW. But come on now, enough with the design elements; where the new 328d shines is on the road. The new 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine is an absolute gem. This is no longer your grandfather’s diesel, which was loud, smelly, and lacked much torque. The N47 engine only produces 180 hp, but spews out 280 lb-ft of torque. For you number geeks, yes it is less hp than the gasoline powered equivalent, but this diesel-sipping sedan gave me an astounding 6.6L/100 kms, considering I did mostly city driving. Yes, I did have the Automatic Start/Stop feature enabled, but this is an all-wheel drive car. Since the weather was nice, I wasn’t able to really test the xDrive system, but BMW guarantees that it’s one sure-footed machine, and I believe it. There is ample low-end torque to get this sedan moving quickly and acceleration is smooth and effortless, thanks to the 8-speed ZF transmission; shifting is almost imperceptible. The new 328d also has a fantastic suspension that adjusts to how you drive the car. In the city, the car absorbs almost all the nuances of the road, like a luxury car should. But throw the car around some curves, and the steering and suspension work in synchrony to provide excellent feedback to the driver. Add the perfect 50/50 weight distribution and this car offers the perfect balance of sport and luxury. Another aspect of BMW that I really like is that you don’t get charged for the different driving modes, like Sport, Normal, and Eco. This feature is an additional charge in Audi. Driving the 2014 BMW 328d for a week, I was hardpressed to find much to fault with the car. I only had a couple of issues. The first is the iDrive and placement of the LCD screen, which have already been discussed above. The second “inconvenience” is that the diesel engine is slightly noisy, especially when cold. No, it’s not overbearing, but it’s there and you become accustomed to it. I found this a bit surprising because BMW’s 535d has virtually no engine noise, and it too is a diesel. Better soundproofing and more anti-vibration technology would have done the trick in the 3-series as well. Diesel technology has come a long way and newer diesel cars offer more torque while providing excellent fuel economy. The 2014 BMW 328d, supplied by Brian Jessel BMW, is an exceptional sedan that lives up to BMW’s slogan as the, “ultimate driving machine.” We highly recommend this vehicle. The 2014 BMW 328d starts at $47,700, which is quite a bargain, while my well-equipped test vehicle totalled $56,115. June 2014

Top Cars for a First Time Buyer

By- Jag Dhatt

One of the most anticipated moments for any young person is the purchase of his or her first car. Unlike in the past, today’s automakers offer many models that won’t dig deep into the pockets. So, rather than looking for a used car, here are our top picks, in random order, for those on a tight budget.

Fiat 500 - $13,495 The Fiat 500 is truly Italian in looks, nature, and build and just oozes flair. According to Fiat, you can customize a Fiat to suit your personal tastes by choosing from over 15 exterior colours, 6 wheel options, and 11 interior trim combinations. The base Pop model still comes with power windows, locks, mirrors, and a stylish, European interior. For an additional $3,000, step up to the Sport, which adds A/C, leather steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, and you can choose from more exterior colours. No wonder this is one of the hottest selling cars on the market, especially for first time buyers.

Nissan Micra - $9,998 How can you go wrong with a stylish new car that costs less than ten grand? Well, you can’t with the new Micra. After 21 years in hiding, the new Micra is designed and built for a Canadian audience (you can’t buy it in the USA) and might be just the vehicle for starving and penny pinching students. The bare boned S model has a punchy little 1.6L motor that is a gas miser even when pushed. Even the fully loaded SR model is only $15,748 and comes with automatic transmission, rearview camera, 16” wheels, fog lights, chrome accents, Bluetooth handsfree, steering wheel controls and USB connection, just to name a few. Welcome back, Micra.

Chevy Spark - $11,945 The new Spark is a great entry vehicle for any buyer. Though the base model has limited options, it does have 10 airbags and was named as one of the safest compact cars on the market. This is a definite plus for parents who want their university-attending students to have a safe ride. Style is contemporary and the new colours such as Lemon and Lime are definite eye-catchers on the road. Surprisingly, the Spark has great cargo space; in fact, it’s over 31 cubic feet. I would opt for adding the CVT automatic transmission and A/C for the additional $3,000, at which the car is still a great value.

VW Jetta - $14,990 If you are looking for a German car but can’t afford the expensive BMW, Mercedes, or Audi brands, the Volkswagen Jetta a great contender. Even though the base model isn’t very well equipped, it’s still harnesses German engineering and safety features, with the added bonus of European styling. For the budget conscious buyer, stepping up to the Trendline+ trim might be the best deal for only a couple of thousand more. Not bad for a German automobile. Das Auto.

From the outside, the Kia Soul isn’t a big looking compact SUV, but on the inside, it boasts much more room than you would expect. Following the steps of the Nissan Cube and Scion xB, the Cube is a practical vehicle that offers good styling, especially when you get the dressed up packages. Standard features include ABS, Bluetooth connectivity, power windows and door locks, steering mounted controls, stability control, solar glass and even power side mirrors – that’s pretty impressive for this vehicle. I’ve driven this vehicle many times and it’s a great daily commuter. On the down-side, it’s not a very aggressive vehicle, but for a sub $17K vehicle, it’s pretty impressive.

Honda Fit - $14,635 You can never go wrong with a Honda, and for that reason, the Fit is a great compact vehicle. The newly designed 2015 model is more aerodynamic and stylish, but at its core, the Fit is a great cheap, practical, and roomy car. Under the hood is Honda’s coveted i-VTEC engine that provides decent umph and impressive fuel economy. The car is nimble around town, and a breeze to park in tight spots. Adding an automatic transmission and A/C will cost an extra $2500, but if you’re not stuck on getting the 2015, you could probably still get a great deal on any 2013 or 2014 models.

Ford Fiesta - $11,999 Hyundai Accent - $13,549 This Korean car maker has made huge strides in the past few years, providing excellent quality and workmanship, but with very budget friendly pricing. The Accent comes standard with anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, and vehicle stability management – these are features that would cost you on competing brands. The new Accent is a great looking car, with flowing lines and a rising belt line. Even though the base model is great for any new buyer, for an extra $3500, you can have a 6-speed automatic transmission, heated front seats, A/C, cruise control and telescopic steering. Well done, Hyundai.

The Fiesta has come a long way with respect to styling and the new model has a very contemporary design. For a price not much more than the Micra, the Fiesta has a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine, 7 standard airbags, electronic stability control, hill start assist, capless fuel filler, and other options. It may not have the refinement of a Honda, but it is priced a couple of thousand dollars less. If you are looking to have more fun with this car, then the ST package is great option, but it will set you back about $24K. Ford did not have a good reputation for building solid cars, but recently, Ford is attracting more buyers because of solid style, great pricing, and quality workmanship. Welcome back, Ford.

Toyota Yaris - $14,255 A couple of years ago, you would probably just walk right by the Yaris and not give it a second thought. The new Yaris, however, is a great looking and spacious subcompact car. This car, again like some others, is built primarily for city use; on the highway, it lacks power and is a tad noisy. That being said, the Yaris does provide great fuel economy, has a responsive steering, offers a smooth ride, and is easy to park. The Yaris is available in 3-door or 5-door models. Being a Toyota, you can be assured that the Yaris has quality workmanship and should last for years.

Mazda 2 - $14,450 The Mazda 2 is the younger sibling of the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6, both of which are winning awards in numerous categories. This 2 is a great entry level car that provides a fun city drive due to its zippy driving feel. While it comes with limited amenities, it does have good handling, clean, sporty styling, and provides adequate room. The interior is clean and the uncluttered cabin adds a touch of class. While some drivers have reported that it takes time to get up to highway speeds, it’s undoubtedly made for urban or suburban use. In my opinion, spend an extra $1500 and step up to the Mazda 3, which is a phenomenal vehicle. Zoom Zoom.

Kia Rio - $13,995 That’s right, another Korean car made our top list. The new Rio stands its ground in a very competitive class of smart, efficient, and budget-friendly subcompacts. Like its siblings, the Rio comes well equipped with many standard features, such as steering wheel-mounted controls, power side folding mirrors, power windows, power door locks, ABS, hill assist, 4-wheel disc brakes, and lots of airbags. Power comes from a 1.6L direct-injected engine, which is the same as in the Hyundai Accent, and provides enough gusto for the daily driver. In this pack, it is one of the nicest looks cars and it drives as good as it looks.

Mitsubishi Lancer - $14,998 We couldn’t leave out the stylish and sporty looking Lancer from our top picks. While this low priced isn’t the RalliArt Edition that you really want, it still looks and runs great. Standard features include a 148 hp engine, 16” wheels, 140-Watt CD/MP3 audio system TPMS, and a plethora of air bags for driver and passenger safety. The interior of the car is not much to brag about, but on the road, the drive is very good. Not a bad buy for the buyer who wants the appeal of a rally car but without the high sticker price.

Google’s Self-Driving Cars 22

June 2014

DRK News / Views / Stuff

The Future is at Hand Google Plans to Build Self-driving Car sans Steering Wheel Google plans to build and launch onto city streets a small fleet of subcompact cars that could operate without a person at the wheel. Actually, the cars wouldn’t even have a wheel. Or gas and brake pedals. The company says the vehicles will use sensors and computing power, with no human needed. Google Inc. hopes that by this time next year, 100 of the two-seaters will be on public roads, following extensive testing. The cars would not be for sale and instead would be provided to select operators for further tweaking and have limitations such as a 40-kilometre-per-hour top speed. The announcement presents a challenge to automakers that have been more cautious about introducing fully automated driving and to government regulators who are scrambling to accommodate self-driving cars on public roads. Other companies are working on the technology but none as large

as Google has said it intends to put such cars in the hands of the public so soon. To date, Google has driven hundreds of thousands of miles on public roads and freeways in Lexus SUVs and Toyota Priuses outfitted with special sensors and cameras. But with a “safety driver” in the front seat, those vehicles were not truly self-driving. Instead of the standard controls, the prototypes would have buttons to begin and end the drive. Passengers would set a destination. The car would then make turns and react to other vehicles and pedestrians based on computer programs that predict what others might do, and data from sensors including radar and cameras that read in real time what other objects are actually doing. The route might be set by typing a destination into a map or using spoken commands, Chris Urmson, the leader of Google’s selfdriving car team, told reporters Wednesday.

The car will be powered by electricity and could go about 160 kilometres before charging. Its shape suggests a rounded-out Volkswagen Beetle — something that might move people around a corporate campus or congested downtown — with headlights and sensors arrayed to resemble a friendly face. The first 100 prototypes will be built in the Detroit area with the help of firms that specialize in autos, Google said. It would not identify those firms or discuss the cost of each prototype. This summer, Google plans to send test prototypes on closed courses, then later this year on public streets. Those test cars will have a wheel and pedals because under California law a test driver must be able to take immediate control. Though next year is the goal for the pilot project, Urmson said public access, “won’t happen until we’re confident in the safety.” Courtesy: The Associated Press

2014 Ford Mustang

he 2014 Can-Am Spyder RT is a comfortable three-wheeler built with agility in mind. It is fitted with automotive inspired technologies and offers generous storage places, top notch ergonomics and a comprehensive list of special features that make it a highly desirable machinery. Among the features offered by the Can-AM Spyder RT you’ll find a Vehicle Stability System, a manual or semi-automatic transmission and an AM / FM audio system with iPod integration. Power comes from a Rotax 1330 ACE, in-line 3 cylinders, liquid-cooled engine with electronic fuel injection and electronic throttle control. The unit delivers a maximum power of 115 Hp at 7250 RPM and 96 Lb-Ft. of torque at 5000 RPM. As far as efficiency is concerned, the Can-Am Spyder RT can ride up to 252 miles at 62 mph (406 km at 100 km/h) on one tank. The Can-Am Spyder RT starts at $25,499.

he Ford Mustang has been around for over 50 years and has been one of the best selling cars of all time. The new 2014 continues to deliver some of the best performance-car bang for the buck, but with added sophistication, style, and brash sound, all while retaining a classic look. The new base V-6 now has 305 horsepower, and can go from 0-100 km/h in just 6 seconds. That’s pretty impressive considering that the car offers up to 31 mpg on the freeway. For the lead footer, the V-8 delivers a whopping 420 horsepower. The iconic Mustang is still a great looking car, with a good blend of 60’s style and modern lines. If I wanted a tire-melting, nostalgic American muscle car, the Ford Mustang would be a very strong contender. The Pony starts at $21, 999.

2014 Honda Odyssey

2014 Vespa 946

T

he Honda Odyssey continues to be the front runner of the minivans for the North American market. Even though it is priced higher than domestic makes and models, the Odyssey offers the best drive, comfort, engineering, and convenience in this category. Even though the 4th generation retains the same body style since 2011, there have been some much needed upgrades. The 2014 now comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission (about time), standard Bluetooth Hands-Free link, iPod, iPhone integration, colour display screen, and some nice cosmetic updates to the interior and exterior. The Odyssey has exceptional fuel economy for a V6 minivan. With the recent technology and styling updates, paired with Honda’s excellent engineering, it’s no wonder why the Odyssey is unlike any other minivan on the road. The 2014 Honda Odyssey starts at $29,990. 24

L

iving in an urban center, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to highlight the brand new Vespa 946. Inspired by the 1946 Mp6, the 2014 blends old lines and contours with contemporary design and engineering. The four-stroke 125 cc monocylinder engine, complete with electronic injection, three-valve distribution, and improved fluid dynamics guarantees the best performance in this category. The Vespa also has ABS braking and ASR traction control, which you probably won’t be needing much of, but still. According to recent news releases, the model should be on dealership floors in November. While a scooter may not be everyone’s urban commuter of choice, the Vespa will offer unsurpassed efficiency and comfort. Plus, parking would never be an issue again. Now, if only we could mount a fixed umbrella on the Vespa for our Vancouver weather. Pricing will be announced soon.

Honda CBR 600RR First Look

By: SJ Power Media Inc.

T

he Honda CBR 600RR is one of the most popular middle-weight supersport motorcycles available in the international two-wheeler market. For 2014, the CBR 600RR brings some updates that improve the bike even further, making it a strong contender for leadership in this highly competitive 600cc class. The 2014 CBR 600RR is still a great looking bike all around, although I prefer the previous front end compared to the new design. Yes, the dual-stage ram air is the reason for the design change, but come on Honda, it could have looked better. The overall body was also tweaked for an improvement of 6.5% in aerodynamic efficiency. The under-seat exhaust is still one of the best in the market and I prefer it over the side mounted exhausts. On road, the CBR feels super refined: Excellent fuel mapping and throttle response work in concert with a broad spread of power. Honda’s Dual-Stage Fuel Injection system provides precise and smooth fuelling with two injectors per cylinder, which improves response at high and low rpms. The centrally located 18 litre fuel tank is now positioned in the centre of the chassis which helps in mass centralization, making it easier to lean-in and stand-up the motorcycle through corners. The clutch and transmission are incredibly slick and provide very light shift action. The chassis is quite good, too; hats off to the BPF for providing a taut and responsive ride for carv26

June 2014

ing apexes that never feels harsh while droning along on the freeway. No matter how you say it, everything on the 600RR is highly refined; you’d be hard pressed to find a motorcycle on the market with better fit, finish and build quality. From an ergonomic standpoint, the CBR 600RR provides a comfortable position for the everyday commute, but is well layed out when you really want to haul on the track. As for the suspension, Honda’s Multi-Action System Inverted Fork is designed to reduce internal pressure via the greater surface area of its damper piston, which improves oil flow for better bump and rebound response. The result is more precise suspension performance, especially over smaller surface irregularities. And to make this legendary bike even better, you can opt for one with Honda’s revolutionary Combined AntiLock Braking System (C-ABS), the first ever on a production supersport motorcycle. Other unique features of the bike include the Line-Beam headlights, radial mounted front brake calipers, Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD), the Unit Pro-Link Suspension. Overall, the latest CBR 600RR is a blast to ride. It strikes a perfect balance between performance and handling. The bike offers state-of-the-art technology in a package most riders may find just about perfect. The 2014 Honda CBR 600RR retails for $12, 099 and is available in black and tricolour.

Do’s and Dont’s of Washing your Car remove and may require a stronger product, such as a bug-andtar remover. Use a soft, nonabrasive cloth to remove these

F

or many vehicle owners, the weekend act of washing a car by hand is a therapeutic act as beneficial for the person’s state of mind as to the vehicle’s appearance. That’s good, because frequent washing is also the best way to maintain a new-car finish. But as simple as washing your car may seem, there are some things to watch for so that you don’t accidentally scratch or degrade the finish. Here are some basic car-washing tips. When should I wash the car? Don’t... wait for a layer of crud to accumulate before washing. Dead bugs, bird droppings, and chemicals from the atmosphere all leach acids that can strip away wax and eventually eat into your car’s paint. If left too long, they can cause damage that requires sanding and repainting the area to correct. Do... wash off dead bugs, bird droppings, and tree-sap mist as soon as possible. Other than this, a weekly car wash will keep the finish in its best shape. In addition, if you live in an area that suffers from acid rain, rinse your vehicle off after a period of rainy weather. Otherwise, acidic chemicals in the rainwater will be left on the surface after the droplets have evaporated, leaving a mark that can permanently mar the paint. What kind of products should I use? Don’t... use household cleaning agents like hand soap, dishwashing detergent, or glass cleaner on the paint. These aren’t formulated for use on a car’s paint and may strip off the protective wax. Do... use a dedicated car-wash product, which is milder and specifically designed for use on automotive paint. Apply the suds with a large, soft natural sponge or a lamb’s-wool mitt. See our car wax report for tips and advice on all types of waxes. Grease, rubber, and road-tar deposits picked up from the road often accumulate around the wheel wells and along the lower edge of the body. These can be stubborn to 28

June 2014

deposits, as they can quickly blacken your sponge. Use a separate sponge to clean the wheels and tires, which may be coated with sand, brake dust, and other debris that could mar the car’s finish. Mild soap and water may work here; if not, a dedicated wheel cleaner may be required. Be sure the cleaner is compatible with the type of finish (paint, clear-coat, chrome, etc.) used on the wheels. A strong formula intended for mag wheels, for instance, can damage the clear coat that’s used on the wheels that come on today’s cars. To be on the safe side, choose a cleaner that’s labeled as safe for use on all wheels. Are there any general guidelines I should follow when washing a car? Don’t... wash your car when the body is hot, such as immediately after driving it or after it has been parked in direct sunlight for awhile. Heat speeds the drying of soap and water, making washing more difficult and increasing the chances that spots or deposits will form. Don’t move the sponge in circles. This can create light, but noticeable scratches called swirl marks. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the hood and other body panels. And don’t continue using a sponge that’s dropped on the ground without thoroughly rinsing it out. The sponge can pick up dirt particles that can scratch the paint. Do... rinse all surfaces thoroughly with water before you begin washing to re-

move loose dirt and debris that could cause scratching. Once you begin, concentrate on one section at a time, washing and rinsing each area completely before moving on to the next one. This ensures that you have plenty of time to rinse before the soap dries. Start at the top, and then work your way around the car. Work the car-wash solution into a lather with plenty of suds that provide lots of lubrication on the paint surface. And rinse the sponge often. Using a separate bucket to rinse the sponge keeps dirt from getting mixed into the sudsy wash water.

When rinsing, use a hose without a nozzle and let the water flow over the car from top to bottom. This creates a sheeting action that helps minimize pooling of water. How should I dry the car when I’m done? Don’t... let the car air dry, and don’t expect a drive around the block to do an effective job. Either will leave watermarks, which in areas with hard water are the minerals left after evaporation. In addition, don’t use an abrasive towel or other material that can leave hairline scratches in the paint. Do... use a chamois (natural or synthetic) or soft terry towels. If you choose towels, you may need several. It’s best to blot the water up instead of dragging the towel or chamois over the paint. The drying process can be speeded up by using a soft squeegee to remove most of the water on the body, but be sure the rubber is pliable and that it doesn’t pick up bits of dirt that can cause scratches.

T

he Eleanor Ford Mustang is basically a 1967 Mustang. The nickname Eleanor came from the popular movie Gone In 60 Seconds. The Mustang was originally based on the platform of the second generation of the Ford Falcon. It was first introduced in the spring of 1964. The 1965 Mustang was Ford’s most successful launch since the Model A. The Eleanor Mustang is supposed to reach top speeds of 172 miles per hour. That is fast for a muscle car from the 60s. You can launch in 4.9 seconds in a 0 to 60 quarter mile time. It has been priced at $139,900 with a modified rear suspension. There is also an $180,000 turbocharged version that can be ordered, which boasts 538 horsepower. The Eleanor is built from a classic Mustang frame, the 1967. But it’s mixed with high tech current day materials and technology. That way, it can produce the reliable power and handling of a modern day race car. These custom built Mustangs are high performance and handcrafted to special order. You can feel just like you’re in the movie, and will sport a car no one else has. The Eleanor Mustang is built to be a full on current day race car on a classic’s body. It has performance features that match today’s quick cars. It features coil over suspension that allows for smooth handling and traction over rougher terrain. It has a sequential fuel injection system, giving it fast takeoff and acceleration. It also has oversized slotted and cross drilled brakes, giving it race performance stopping power. Gone In 60 Seconds was originally released in 1974. It starred H.B. Halicki. The story was about a group of car thieves that had to steal 48 cars in a matter of days. The groundbreaking film is famous for having wrecked and destroyed over 90 cars. It also has an incredible 40 minute car chase scene. This led to the 2000 remake of the same plot, starring Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. The one constant star in the two movies is the famous Eleanor Mustang. The Eleanor Mustang is a car that many people believe to be a real model car. There are few that know it is actually a fictional car. It was one of the most popular “actors” that wasn’t a human person. Having starred in more than one film, the name “Eleanor” became tied to Ford Mustangs forever.

Laser Jammers and Radar Detectors If you’re like me, you’ve probably had the urge to press down on the accelerator and feel the surge of energy when going faster. Even though I don’t speed very often, I do on occasion “speed” when there is light traffic on the freeway. Most law enforcement officers understand that the general flow of traffic is usually going slightly faster than the posted limit. What they are looking for is the aggressive driver who is going much faster, and putting others at risk. However, some people think that being ticketed for going about 10 km/h over the speed limit is unfair, especially when there is a limited amount of cars on the road and traffic is flowing steadily. Just like law enforcement has state-of-the-art technology to catch speeders, there is equivalent technology that tries to warn a driver of a potential speed trap. This article is not written to encourage speeding; rather, it is designed to give the reader information about radar detectors and laser jammers.

Laser Jammer When you see a law enforcement officer standing off to the side of the road trying to measure your speed, he is most likely using a LIDAR (‘laser’ gun) to get an accurate reading. These devices are very accurate and can pick out an individual vehicle within a stream of traffic. The gun works by illuminating the target with a laser and analyzing the reflecting light. Without going into the specifics, after some calculations this will yield the speed of the object. A Laser Jammer’s purpose is to prevent the LIDAR gun from getting an accurate reading. When the Laser Jammer has detected that a LIDAR gun is pointed at it, the jammer will send out light that is on the same wavelength as the LIDAR gun, but at a higher intensity. This will confuse the gun, causing it to get wrong readings. However, this

makes laser jammers easier to find as most modern LIDAR guns will inform the operator that they are actively being jammed. Since the LIDAR can easily target a single car in traffic, it’s easy enough to figure out where the jamming is coming from. Radar Detectors A radar detector is used to warn the driver if they are being monitored with a radar gun. A radar gun (or speed gun) is used to measure the speed of a moving object; much like the LIDAR gun. It is used commonly by law enforcement for speed checking, and professional sports such as baseball and tennis to measure the speed of the balls and other statistics. The radar gun utilizes the Doppler Effect where the frequency of the return signal changes in proportion to the objects speed. The faster the object, the higher the frequency of the return speed. A radar detector has a special receiver to detect the waves from the radar gun and alerts the user when detected. Using a GPS enabled detector, operators are able to catalogue locations where radar was detected. Because the receiver of a radar detector has an oscillator that radiates a little, it is possible to build a radardetector-detector which is able to detect the oscillator. In BC it is legal to use a Radar Detector, as well as in Alberta and Saskatchewan. However, in the rest of Canada, radar detectors are illegal, and law enforcement may confiscate equipment regardless if it is currently being used or not.

Always remember that there is a clear difference between those who speed slightly and those who speed aggressively, and law enforcement officers are targeting the latter group.

Disclaimer: It is illegal to use a laser jammer to defeat law enforcement speed measurements of your vehicle.

Why Ride a Motorcycle? Would you rather drive or ride? As compared to driving a car, riding a motorcycle is more tiring, more vulnerable to bad weather and road conditions, more dangerous and risky, isn’t it? Well, that’s not what a real biker would think. Owning a motorcycle is barely something people need to do - for most people, it’s a want or desire. So why do people want or desire a motorcycle? One premium online community that specially caters to motorcycle enthusiasts, recently picked out such a topic for its members to discuss. A lot of members contributed by giving their opinions or sharing their own stories. Here are the five aspects that get the most credit. • It’s fun. A set of good curves on a good road is just the best feeling to ride along on. It’s fascinating how human bodies can respond to the gravitational pulls and pushes. The best thing is when someone’s on a motorcycle, he feels everything out there, the nature, the road right under the foot, the wind in the face... Nothing will ever compare. • It saves money. Motorcycles burn much less gas than most cars in general, so it really helps save money. Also, at some point, motorcycle riders are leaders in conservation. • Easier to park. Is it a pain when someone spends half an hour in the parking lot but still can’t find a place to place his car? That’ll never happen to a motorcyclist. • Super flexibility. Remember the helpless feeling of encountering a traffic jam on the road? Being stuck in a car with a line of vehicles in the front blocking the vision and not knowing when the traffic is going to move? A motorcycle can solve all of this, even though we recommend that you follow all driving and riding laws! Besides, a motorcycle can literally stop anywhere along any road. • Easier to maintain. Motorcycles are easier to repair. Firstly the engine is more accessible. Go to the bike, pull off a side cover or seat, and there is the engine. Secondly, there is less to maintain, e.g. two wheels not four. In many ways, a motorcycle is only half a car. Finally, many repairs can be done without having to go to a mechanic, like changing spark plugs or fitting a new battery. Are motorcycles more dangerous than cars? Absolutely. But any rider will tell you that being on a motorcycle, enjoying the air on your face, and having a sense of “freedom” are things you can’t get when driving a car. As always though, ride safely and heed all laws.

2014 Honda Accord Touring

Innovati Honda Accord Touring 2014

E

ver since the Honda Accord was launched in 1976, it has been one of the best selling cars in North America, year after year. The new 9th generation Accord, still available as a coupe or sedan, has made some significant changes that buyers will really appreciate. This mid-sized car will appeal to those buyers who are budget-minded, but still want lots of interior space and a ‘premium’ feel. Our test review vehicle, the fully loaded Touring Edition, was provided by Open Road Honda in Burnaby, BC. The 9th generation Accord made its debut in 2013 and the new styling is very appealing. The Accord sedan has always been conservative in its styling and a fresh new look was necessary, especially with competitors like Ford, Mazda, and Nissan coming out with new flowing designs. The Accord’s new front end is still distinctively Honda, but more masculine. The Touring comes standard with projector-beam LED headlights and LED daytime running lights. The beltline starts lower in the front and rises slightly as it nears the back, giving the car a more forward and aggressive look, almost wedge-like. As compared to the previous generation, the rear of the car is much more pleasing, with the taillight cluster, complete with LED’s, being more uniform. If you choose the Sport Edition, dual exhausts and rear deck spoiler are standard. Step inside the vehicle and you’ll notice that the designers of Honda got it right; the new interior is warm, inviting, and hightech. I’ve mentioned this before, and it’s worth saying here again – unlike its competitors, Honda makes use of some of the best hard plastics for its interiors. The interior also comes with satin metal and faux wood or carbon like accents that should appeal to almost everyone. The audio and climate controls are easily within reach and the 8” intelligent Multi-Information Display is a gem, providing clear and accurate colours. The Touring Edition comes fully loaded with dual-zone climate control, navigation, multi-angle rear-view camera, Bluetooth interface and other safety features that will be discussed a little later. The heated front and rear leather seats are large, very comfortable, and offer great support, even during longer drives. Unlike my previous experiences with the Accord, these new seats made driving very enjoyable. Honda designers did not forget the rear passengers and there is now an extra one and a half inches of well-needed legroom. You will easily notice that overall, the interior of the car is much roomier, even though the overall dimensions of the car are smaller. Well done Honda. Push the start button and the brand new Earth Dreams Technology four-cylinder equipped Touring Edition comes alive. There is a six-cylinder available, but for the average family, the four is plenty enough. Even Honda said that about 75% of its sales are those with the smaller four-cylinder. This new direct-injected motor produces 185 horsepower (hp) and 181 lb-ft of torque. 34

Just in comparison, the previous versions of the Honda four-cylinder produced only 166 hp, so considerable advancements has been made. In 2013, and carried forward to this year, Honda is going with its new Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT in the automatic version– simply speaking, a CVT has no fixed gears. Rather, it offers a wide variety of gear ratios through the use of a pulley system and belt. Honda’s G-Design Shift logic offers more acceleration and response than conventional CVT designs. To be honest, when I first drove the 2013 model last year, I could not tell that it was equipped with a CVT. Anyone who has driven a vehicle with CVT notices something distinctively different, but with Honda’s patented G-Design Shift logic, the driver can still feel the “gears”; there is a 6-speed manual gearbox if you prefer to do all the shifting. On the road, one of the first things I noticed was how incredibly quiet the car was; my previous experiences with Honda vehicles were not such. As with the Civic and CR-V, Honda engineers made changes to the suspension and transmission, while add36

ing sound reducing glass – these changes are a definite welcome. Another noticeable change is increased visibility, both inside and outside of the car. On the inside, all of the gauges are clearly visible and on the outside, the driver has an excellent view of what’s in front, rear, and around the vehicle. Honda’s exclusive Lanewatch system, which puts a camera on the passenger sideview mirror, displays an image of the blind spot on the center LCD display. Initially, this technology got me distracted, but after a couple of days, I found myself relying on this image more and more as I didn’t have to turn my head. Driving the Accord is exactly what you’d expect from Honda – precise, comfortable, and now, fun. The new Earth Dreams Technology engine, lighter and with reduced friction, gives excellent responsiveness and acceleration. No, you’re not going to win ¼ mile races, but you now have one of the most fuel-efficient mid-sized cars available. The electric steering is probably one of the best for this class, inspiring more confidence in the driver. To stay connected with the car, there is no need to take the

hands off the steering wheel. All controls for navigation, audio, and Bluetooth are accessible via hands-free operation. Is it the best in its class? No, but it is functional and practical. With driver and passengers in mind, there are a number of technological safety features available in the new Accord, some of them being the aforementioned Lanewatch system, Lane Departure Warning, back up camera, front collision warning, LED headlamps, and expanded view sideview mirrors. Of course, front, side, and curtain airbags are standard. For over a week, I really enjoyed driving the new 2014 Honda Accord. Fuel economy was excellent, especially with the Econo mode turned on, and I averaged about 7.1L/100 km of combined driving. I’m also looking forward to the new Accord Hybrid, which is available in limited quantities – book yours now. If you are looking for a ‘premium’ feeling, yet budget friendly mid-sized vehicle, the new 2014 Honda Accord will definitely not disappoint. The 2014 Accord starts at $23,990 while the Touring is priced at $30,745.

Our Right to Feel Safe on the Road – A Mother’s Perspective Written by Jasleen Dutt My heart broke when I read about the story of the five-year old girl who was hit and killed by a car near her home in Abbotsford. Even though this was a freak and tragic accident, every day I see so many reckless and careless drivers who put others at risk. This concerns

down. In a 30-minute drive, by going 15 km/h over the speed limit, you will save less than 5 minutes of time. Is this risk worth putting another person’s life in jeopardy? I would think not. As I mentioned before, speeding and cell phone usage are the first things that come to mind, but there are others as well. About two weeks ago, while driving to work, I saw a lady putting on her make-up and drinking her coffee at the same time. I know some people can multitask, but this is ridiculous. As her car was driving along at over 60 km/h, she had no problem in applying her eye-liner, mascara, and lipstick. Again,

me immensely because I have a five and seven-year old, both of whom I commute around for their practices and lessons. For me, careless drivers are more than just those who use their cell phones or those who speed, but let’s start with that. Even though it is illegal, countless drivers use their cell phones. Use a Bluetooth device or even better, pull over and talk. But what infuriates me are those idiots who feel the need to text while

driving. A split-second is all it takes for you to be distracted and get into an accident with my car, which is carrying my precious children. Did you know that a young child’s body can be hurt badly by an accident in which the car is travelling only 30 km/h? Did you also know that children can be emotionally affected much more by the trauma of a car accident? What can I say to speeders except slow

within the blink of an eye, her car could have gone into on-coming traffic or she could have rear-ended the car in front of her. I too have to get ready in the morning for work, but I wake up a half earlier to do this. The same can be said for those who choose to eat while driving. These are all distractions and need to be avoided, if not for your own safety, but for those riding in the back on booster seats. Finally, there are so many drivers who run amber, or even red lights, because they are in a hurry or those who choose to tailgate. Behaviours like this are just a ticking time bomb, waiting to explode into a disaster. In my opinion, law enforcement officers should be ticketing all drivers who show wanton disregard of others’ safety. Yes, this may sound extreme, but I would not want to be the mother who lost her child due to a distracted, reckless, or careless driver.

Ride in Style with Motorcycle Jeans

By- Jag Dhatt

Having been a motorcycle rider for over 25 years, I’ve always made sure to ride safely and protect myself as best as I could. That being said, I did have some fun and pulled a few stunts here and there, and even dropped my sportbike a couple of times. To be even safer, I’ve always worn proper motorcycle gear, including a fully armoured leather suit, Kevlar gloves, and proper racing boots, all of which have kept me and my skin intact. Some of friends, who didn’t initially believe in wearing proper riding gear, suffered the consequences. In one incident, riding at roughly 30 km/h, a friend was cut off by a left-turning car. His bike toppled and he slid about 7 feet on the road. Wearing only jeans, he suffered some pretty bad road rash on his left hip, thigh, and knee – trust me, it wasn’t a pretty sight; imagine if he was riding faster. Luckily, he was wearing an armoured jacket. There is this misconception, especially among new riders, that wearing jeans while riding should provide good protection because, come on, it’s denim. And don’t forget, wearing jeans is so much more stylish than riding gear, right. Trust me, when regular denim meets asphalt, there’s no competition. So, what’s the solution to ride in style while keeping your skin? Easy: Reinforced, armoured motorcycle Jeans! Motorcycle jeans are engineered and designed to handle the extreme heat, damage, and wear when you are sliding down the road in an inelegant fashion on your posterior. Here’s a look at some quality motorcycle jeans that will fit your style and protect you from unwanted skin grafts.

Dainese D1 Jeans: Dainese are well-known for making serious moto gear, and their Kevlar jeans are no exception. A pair of D1s cost $220: For that, you get CE-certified soft-armour and an almost bullet-proof Kevlar lining. From a style perspective, they aren’t going to fool anyone by pretending to be “normal” jeans, but then again, you didn’t want to be normal anyway.

Teknic Women’s Venom Jeans: The Teknic Women’s Venom Jeans are a 340 gram distressed finish denim and is made from 96% cotton and 4% Spandex. For safety, there is 250 gram-100% knit Kevlar reinforcement throughout 90% of the jean. You need to be comfortable on a bike, and thus, a Knox CE Approved multi-position armour system, with Velcro fastening in the kneeshins, provide an adjustment system that allows for a personal fit.

Riders today, male and female, do not need to compromise style for safety. Motorcycle jeans have come a long way and now, even look quite fashionable. One caveat that riders need to remember is that motorcycle jeans will NOT offer the level of protection as a pair of fully armoured leather pants. If you must wear motorcycle jeans, get the ones that have Kevlar and knee padding, and wear them for casual touring only. Motorcycle jeans are not recommended for sportbike riders. Always protect yourself because unlike the bikes we ride, we can’t get spare parts for ourselves. 40

Women’s Modern Fit Draggin’® Jeans: These jeans have a straight leg boot cut with the traditional five pocket design. This style has a modern mid-rise waist. Added is a higher rise in the back to accommodate a comfortable riding position. And if you need quick access to change, the jeans have incorporated a change pocket on the left side for ease of use on your bike.

REV’IT: The Ideal motorcycle jeans should wear like a second skin, but above all, they should protect your own skin keeping you safe and comfortable. The REV’IT! design philosophy—’Creating ergonomic safety products that complement the human body’— is evident in all the new models launched this season. Although they look like your next favorite jeans, these are not your average jeans.

Choosing a Good Motorcycle School

iks qrHW cuxIey shI motrswiekl skUl ?

Any good rider will tell you that the best way you can learn about motorcycling is from the experts. Whether you are new to motorcycling or returning to an old passion, you will benefit from a motorcycle Rider Training Course. The Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council of Canada supports rider training programs across Canada because the MMIC believes that rider training is one of the best ways, if not the best way, to learn how to ride a motorcycle. There are many schools and programs across the country, but making an informed decision about which to choose can be confusing. One think to keep in mind is that all recognized rider training programs have certain characteristics, which include: 1. They are ‘recognized’ by the provincial licensing ministry or agency. 2. They use highly trained instructors who must meet established standards. 3. They use an approved curriculum. In order to get started in a rider training program, keep in mind the following: 1. You need a separate motorcycle license to ride a motorcycle (unless they are speed limited). 2. Motorcycle license requirements differ from province to province. 3. In most provinces, rider training programs can help you obtain your motorcycle license. For those who are new, require basic licensing, or those returning to riding after some time, it’s best to take the Introductory Riding Basics programs, which are comprehensive 18-hour experiences that give the necessary motorcycle handling skills. They are conducted away from traffic on motorcycles that the course provides. These programs build your confidence and put you at ease, while challenging you at the same time. The typical course is scheduled on a weekend or two weekdays. Usually, there is a three-hour classroom discussion on risk factors and basic riding strategies before getting on the bike. During the introductory course, you will ride through a series of exercises that build one skill after another until you have a sense of control and accomplishment. The program concludes with an on-site riding exercise to meet provincial ministry standards. If you are successful, the riding school is authorized by the ministry to issue you a certificate for your next level of motorcycle license. For those riders who presently have their probationary license and need to obtain a full motorcycle license, or those who want a higher comfort level in traffic, take the “Advanced Training” program. This higher level training program qualifies you to obtain your full motor-

DRK News / Views / Stuff cycle license in many provinces. Advanced training assumes that you have basic motorcycle skills, especially with handling the bike in traffic. These training programs fine-tune your traffic observation and management practices on your own motorcycle in a real traffic environment. Typically, advanced riding programs are between nine and fifteen hours. In the advanced programs, the rider to instructor ration is kept low, between three and five riders to one instructor. Training usually takes place during a weekend, with an added Friday or Monday. Also, advanced programs generally build group riding camaraderie. Before beginning with any riding training program, here are some questions to consider: 1. What’s the size of the group? 2. How many instructors will be available to me? 3. What are the sizes and varieties of the training motorcycles? 4. Is it a ministry-approved course? 5. Is there a cost for a re-test should you not pass the first time? 6. Will you be able to try more than one type of motorcycle? 7. What payment options are available? 8. Is there more practice time should you need it? In the end, the learning experience should be enjoyable and beneficial to your development as a rider. The experts are there to pass on their skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm for riding to you. Enjoy riding.
