Spring is Here. Share the Road.
T
he DRK Magazine Team is proud to present its second issue for 2014. The inaugural issue was very well received in the community and the feedback from readers and clients was very positive. Due to overwhelming response from the community, our second issue has already expanded to 48 pages, up from 32, and we humbly thank you for your support. Even though it came late this year, the arrival of spring weather means more and more riders are cleaning up their motorcycles and getting ready for riding. A current report by law officials has stated that in the past five years, there has been an alarming increase in the number of motorcycle fatalities. We urge our fellow riders to be more cautious while enjoying the open air on their two wheels; do not speed, try to impress others, or take risks. Likewise, for drivers, pay extra attention and share the road with motorcycle riders. The month of April was a busy one for the DRK Team, with lots of test drives, test rides, and corporate events. In this issue, we feature the 2014 Yamaha R6, 2014 Audi A7 TDI, and the 2014 Mercedes ML 350 BlueTEC. These amazing two- and four-wheeled machines offer the best in comfort, luxury, style, and of course, performance. Our team also had the opportunity to attend Michelin Canada’s Tire Test event in Vancouver, where we tested and reviewed the all-new Michelin Premier All-Season tire. Read about our conclusions in this issue. We are confident that you will enjoy this second issue of DRK Magazine, where we continue to provide you with the best information, news, and reviews about cars and motorcycles. Remember, be safe and share the road.

Volvo Unveils Inflatable Child Seat Concept
Latest
Buzz M AY 2 014
UBC Engineers Building High-Efficiency Cars The UBC Supermileage Team sent two of their cars to the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas competition in April. Somewhat resembling a smart car, the 86-kg Odysseus, is a single-passenger, four-wheeled car that can get about 577 miles per gallon (or 0.4 litres/100km). The other prototype vehicle, called the Mark IX, goes even further and achieves a fuel efficiency of over 1,383 miles per gallon (or 0.17 litres/100km).
Volvo has always been known for innovative safety research and the latest concept has parents buzzing with excitement. Currently, if you have children, you know the drill: lug the car seat in and out of the car, carry it to another vehicle, to the airport, or wherever else it’s needed. Now, Volvo has designed a lightweight, inflatable rear-facing car seat using some ground breaking technology. According to Volvo, the concept seat is not only safe, compact, and lightweight, but can also fit into a weekend bag for travel. The new concept seat weighs about 11 pounds, and can be inflated or deflated in about 40 seconds via an internal air pump. And get this, Bluetooth connectivity allows the seat to be inflated remotely. The new seat has not undergone any testing, but that is expected to start in the very near future. With Volvo’s record on safety, when this concept is approved by the governing bodies, parents will be ready with cash in hand.
“This year, we focused on building a new body to reduce air drag,” said UBC Supermileage Team Captain Connor Schellenberg-Beaver, a fourth-year engineering student. “We also optimized the weight of the vehicle and relied on efficient driving habits such as eliminating unnecessary acceleration and braking.” Mileage numbers like these give hope that building ultraefficient vehicles is not out of the question in the near future.
Ford Motor Co. Announces New CEO Ford Motor Company’s COO, Mark Fields, has been appointed the new CEO of the company, and will be replacing Alan Mulally on July 1. Executive Chairman Bill Ford said, “From the first day we discussed Ford’s transformation eight years ago, Alan and I agreed that developing the next generation of leaders and ensuring an orderly CEO succession were among the highest priorities. Now, Mark [Fields] is ready to lead the company. Fields, a 25-year company veteran and New Jersey native, was eyed to be the company’s new CEO after leading the automaker’s North American operations from deep losses record profits. Said Fields, “I’m so blessed to be surrounded by a talented management team.” The COO position won’t be filled because Fields wants to maintain and accelerate product passion as they go forward. Mulally will also be giving up his Ford board seat. May 2014

in 2016 and that’s when it will launch a new C-segment SUV. Details on the new SUV are slim, though it will replace both the Patriot and Compass. It’s unknown if either the Patriot or Compass nameplate will carry on or if the new SUV will get a new name altogether. Expect a refreshed Cherokee to arrive in 2016 as well. Meanwhile, 2017 will also be another big year for Jeep. The second quarter of that year
Ed Coates, founder and owner of B.C. auto parts chain Lordco Auto Parts, passed away in February at the age of 65. Coates was regarded as a leader in the Canadian automotive aftermarket and his Lordco Auto Parts is the dominant player in the British Columbia market, with some 100 stores serving retail and wholesale customers. The business is set to mark its 40th anniversary this year. Coates was honoured with the Automotive Industries Association of Canada’s Distinguished Service Award in 2011, as an active member of the industry. Most recently, he served as the mentor guest at the Young Executives Society Conference. Ed Coates is survived by a large family, both of his own and from his Lordco team.

Also slated for 2017 is an all-new Grand Cherokee (a refresh is scheduled for next year), and a mid-cycle update for the small Jeep Renegade. Finally, the third quarter of 2018 will mark the introduction of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, adding a three-row SUV to the brand’s lineup.

Beavers Blamed for Landslide near Enderby
Motorcycle Fatalities Increasing
North Okanagan District officer Jackie Pearase says a beaver dam is responsible for the mountain of debris that rumbled down a creek in B.C.’s north Okanagan on Friday, washing out a section of road and cutting power to hundreds of residents. “An ice-dammed beaver dam burst and sent the entire contents of Dale Lake down Cooke Creek,” Pearase said in an email. She also says a local salmon hatchery was decimated. The Kingfisher Interpretive Centre was hit hard and the fish are not likely to survive,” she said. “A terrible mess.” The washout — one of several weather-related incidents in the province — occurred at about 6 a.m. PT along Cooke Creek, about 25 kilometres east of the community of Enderby. The slide washed out Mabel Lake Road and a bridge spanning the creek, isolating about 200 residents on the other side.
The onset of warmer weather means there will be a lot more motorcycles on the road, and local police say they are also expecting to see more motorcycle crashes. In the past four years, local police say officers have seen the number of motorcycle fatalities rise from one in 2010 to seven last year, representing a substantial upward trend. Police say the primary causes of these fatalities have been speed, driver inexperience and motorcycles too powerful for the rider to control. Residents all over the lower mainland have been complaining for years to find ways to slow down riders. And it’s not only the speed, as drivers also get frustrated with riders weaving around cars just to get in front of the line. Says a local driver, “It’s not just cruisers or sport bike riders, but even people riding scooters are now doing it.” on- and off-ramps — as well as pack riding at extreme speeds. Police said these types of driving behaviours are common practice as the weather gets better and more motorcycles return to the road. There have already been a number of minor crashes this year, and police and officials are warning riders to slow down and be cautious. For drivers, it’s also important to pay attention to riders.

2014 Yamaha R6
I
’ve been a sportbike junkie since getting my motorcycle licence many many years ago, but which only seems like yesterday to me. I’ve owned everything from the Honda CBX550 and Interceptor 750 to the newer Yamaha R6 and Suzuki GSXR750; how far the sportbikes have come in the last 20 years is
amazing. Recently, I had the opportunity to do a quick three-day test ride of the new 2014 Yamaha R6. I was eager to get on this bike and see how it compared to my 2001 that I had owned for over 6 years. So when the heavens cleared for a few days, I pulled out and cleaned my leather riding suit, gloves, boots and trusted helmet. This was going to be fun.

2014 Yamaha R6
It’s important to note that the 2014 R6 is well, uhm…ahem, pretty much the same as the 2013 model. Not much has changed, except for the colours. My test 2014 R6 was red, white, and black in colour – official name is Vivid Red – and in my humble (maybe biased) opinion, is one of the best looking sport bikes, period. It’s aggressive, bold, austere, and has just the right amount of full fairings mixed with naked chassis. Yamaha is still sticking with its side 12

exhaust with the R6; personally, I think they should go with the underseat system, like in the Honda CBR 600RR, so that it shows off more of the gorgeous bike. Of course, you could get an aftermarket system that would fit underneath the seat, with some minor modifications. As I was doing up my helmet before getting on the bike, you could probably see my smile from a mile away. I turned the key,

pushed the start button and the devilish beast awoke. Since this was a stock bike, the exhaust pipe was not loud and offered only a slight rumble at idle. It’s worth noting that I’m a proponent of aftermarket pipes, not just for the extra couple of horses, but for the sound quality. You want the bike to sound aggressive; more importantly, most aftermarket pipes are louder, making you “visibly” louder on the road. I started the ride slowly, getting the feel of the bike. As with the previous R6 models, the bike is quite light and nimble; the fairings are deceiving, making the R6 look and feel bigger and heavier. The seat is probably the tallest in this class, at 33.5”, and pitches the riders forward. Don’t get me wrong though, the ride quality is quite good, but not excellent. Compared with Honda and Kawasaki, the Yamaha is the least friendly commuter bike, but I didn’t mind. Riding around town was quite nostalgic, bringing back memories of my original 2001 R6. The bike turns very easily with the rider and requires little effort when leaning into corners and curves. After a few hours, I headed home, where I parked the 599cc, DOHC, 16-valve, liquid-cooled bike for the night. Getting off the bike, I just stared at it, tempted to buy one for myself. On Saturday, a group of us headed out towards Whistler – two R6’s, a CBR 600RR, one GSXR 750, and a cruiser. All riders liked the styling of the R6 and the new colours. While heading out towards North and West Vancouver, I could feel that the R6’s performance suffers at the lower rpm’s. I had noticed the same issue in the 2006 model and thought for sure that it would be better. Never-the-less, get the tach needle past 10,000 rpm’s and this thing really takes off, almost sending me off my seat. Now, this is what the R6 is built for, open riding in canyon-like winding roads. The six-speed transmission coupled with the slipper clutch is nothing short of perfect. Downshifting didn’t change the behaviour of the bike at all, as didn’t the braking. For you really aggressive riders, you may want to customize the Soqi suspension a little, but even at stock, it’s great. Riding through Squamish and towards Whistler gave me ample opportunities to push the R6 into corners and really get a track like feel of the bike. The Deltabox aluminum frame and magnesium subframe do offer a great compromise between lightness and rigidity. Whereas the Honda and Kawasaki are “easy to ride,” the Yamaha is definitely more precise and needs skillful hands to control the bike. As I was telling a friend, this is by far the “scariest” of the bunch, especially for a novice rider. Experienced riders will love the R6 because it waits to be pushed to its limits, where it shines the most. Handling can be scary, but if tuned and calibrated properly, it will keep up with the rest of the pack. After a quick late lunch, we headed back home and this time, enjoyed the winding roads much more by opening up the throttle once in a while. The 2014 Yamaha R6 is a great bike, but I would not recommend it for a novice rider. To truly enjoy a bike of this calibre, you need to have some experience riding for some time. The Honda CBR 600RR and Kawasaki Ninja may be more commuter friendly, but come on, the R6 just calls out to riders. The 2014 Yamaha R6 is priced at $11,999.

Car Maintainence A Female Perspective - Jasleen Dutt
I
’ll be the first to admit that I’m not really a car person. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy driving my Honda Odyssey or our BMW, but that’s about the extent of it. My husband always tells me to learn a little more about cars and how they work, but is there really a need? I mean, he’s here to take care of things, right. Recently, my lack of car knowledge was put to the test and in the end, I had dished out about $400 for a service that was only “recommended” and should have cost me much less. Now, I’m not implying that work wasn’t done on my vehicle; however, I was made to feel that if I didn’t get this “recommended” maintenance done, it could be detrimental. So, I thought of my kids and gave the green light for the service. After my husband came home that day, I proudly told him about the service, thinking he would take notice that I took care of car business – his response? Laughter. He said that he had just checked those “recommended” maintenance items and they were fine. But he did appreciate that I took an interest, though some-what costly, in our cars. On the following weekend, I took the initiative and asked my husband to go through the basics of our cars with me. I thought it was going to be so difficult, but it wasn’t and now, I’m a little more knowledgeable and better prepared. Below, I’ve listed the basics of car maintenance that every female should know. Remember, under the hood of the vehicle may seem like a scary place, but it’s not much harder than your make-up drawer, where you know the location of everything.
Owner’s Manual: The owner’s manual, whether print or digital, provides a lot of valuable information about your car, settings, and basic maintenance. If you have time, quickly flip through your owner’s manual to know where and how to quickly find information. mwlk Bwv Enr dw mYnUAl BwvyN ifjItl jW ilKqI hovy quhwfI kwr Aqy ies dIAW sYitMgW Aqy sMBwl sbMDI bhuq jwxkwrI idMdw hY[jy quhwfy koL smW hY qW ie`k nzr ‘c ieh jwx lE ik ik`QoN ikhVI jwxkwrI iml skdI hY[
Fluid Levels: Know the location and how to check the engine oil, transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid. Modern cars probably have sensors for all of these, but it’s still better to learn the manual method. Also, learn how to top up the fluid levels. pihlW ieh pqw kro ik ieMjx Awiel, tRWSimSn PlUAf, ivMfSIlf, vwSr PlUAf, pwvr stIAirMg PlUAf Aqy bRyk PlUAf ik`QON cY`k krnw hY Aqy iks qrHW cY`k krnw hY[bhq swrIAW kwrW ‘c BwvyN ies leI sYNsr l`gy hoey hn pr ienHW nUM h`Q nwL cY`k krnw vI zrUr is`K lYxw cwhIdw hY[ieh vI is`K lE ik ies nUM pUrw iks qrHW r`Kxw hY[

There are many aspects of a vehicle and it’s working, and I may have only a limited and tip-of-the iceberg knowledge about them; then again, it’s good for now – I mean my husband can take care of the rest. Now, if I could only get him to spend some time and learn about my make-up drawer… 16

kwrW dI dyKBwL Fault Lights in Gauge Cluster: Recently, on the phone, I was trying to explain to my husband about an amber light that had come on in the gauge cluster. He was getting frustrated because I couldn’t explain where exactly the light was or its size, shape or icon. Fault lights give you a lot of critical information about your car so it’s good to learn their symbols and reference. ku`J icr pihlW mYN Awpxy pqI nMU Pon ‘qy aunHW AYNbr lweItW sbMDI d`sx dw Xqn kr rhI sI ijhVIAW gyj klstr ‘qy Aw rhIAW sn[auh bycYn ho irhw sI ikauN ik mYN aus nUM ieh nhIN sI smJw pw rhI ik ieh lweIt iks Kws QW ‘qy hY Aqy ies dw rMg Aqy Skl iks qrHW dI hY[Pwlt lweItW quhwnUM quhwfI kwr sbMDI bhuq mh`qvpUrn jwxkwrI idMdIAW hn ies leI aunHW Aqy aunHW dy inSwnW sbMDI zrUr jwx lYxw cwhIdw hY[

2014 Victory Jackpot

2014 Honda Valkyrie
W
he Victory Jackpot has been a fan favourite for many years. The 2014 model continues with the stretched custom look, and the unique rear fender is designed to show off the pavementchurning 250mm rear tire. The large tire may seem bulky, but does provide for a smooth ride and easy handling. Power comes from the Freedom 106/6 V-Twin and the bike features 100 lb-ft of torque, enough for cruising on the open road or passing with confidence. The 21” black stringray wheels look great and really do complement the bike’s styling. New colours include Sunset Red and Gloss Black; my favourite is the Sunset Red, especially with how it looks in the evening light. As with most other Victory bikes, the Jackpot can be customized for each rider’s unique taste and sense of style. The 2014 Victory Jackpot starts at $17,799.
hen Honda said that there’s nothing like a Valkyrie, they meant it. First launched in 1996, the original Valkyrie took press and riders by storm. Then suddenly, in 2003, it was gone. For 2014, the Gold Wind Valkyrie makes its debut and it is bigger, badder, and better in every sense of the words. Staying true to its original form, the Valkyrie is based on a Gold Wing, but stripped down to the bare essentials. The 1832 cc flatsix is still retained, just like the twin-spar aluminum frame and aluminum single-sided swingarm. Weighing in at an amazing 150 lbs less than a Gold Wing, the Valkyrie really hauls, and it looks great doing so with its LED lights, blacked out engine, shorty exhaust, and the minimalist bodywork. It really is beast-looking of a machine. The new Valkyrie starts at $19,999.
2015 Nissan Micra
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

uring my university days, I owned a Nissan Micra and for my purposes, it was a pretty decent car. Finally, after some time off, the Nissan Micra is returning to Canada and the 2015 models are now on sale. The new 5-door Micra offers great quality, European styling with a Canadian twist, and lots of unexpected features that will surely shake up the entry-level segment. Power comes from a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine that is mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The car puts out only 109 HP, but it’s not going to require deep pockets with its 6.6 litres/100 km fuel efficiency. On the inside, there is an amazing number of standard features, such as rearview monitor with back-up camera, iPod/USB input, and even a Bluetooth Hands-free phone system. That’s pretty impressive for a car that starts at $9,998. 18

eep has a solid reputation for building capable off-road vehicles and it’s no surprise that the new Grand Cherokee still carries the torch. The Grand Cherokee is a great mix of off-road capability and luxury; I would know as I owned one for over 18 years. For 2014, the Grand Cherokee offers an all-new 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 that delivers a whopping 420 lb-ft of torque and 240 HP. Thanks to this new engine, that is mated to an all-new 8-speed transmission, the Grand Cherokee now offers best in-class fuel economy, at 40 mpg on the highway. On the inside, the Grand Cherokee is all luxury, especially when you choose the Limited, Overland, or Summit trims. If you want to replace your tires every year, choose the SRT, which is the most powerful SUV in Canada. The 2014 Grand Cherokee starts at $39,995.

NITROGEN or AIR Which is better? Jordan Donsky, CEO - Nitro Canada
F
illing your tires with air may seem free but its costing you up to $300 a year in increased fuel and tire costs. Unless you are constantly checking and maintaining your tire pressure (how many of us actually do?), you are constantly driving with tires that aren’t properly inflated. That means your tire’s tread life could be reduced by as much as 25%. Improper tire inflation pressure will allow the tire to deflect (bend) more as it rolls. This will build up internal heat, increase rolling resistance and cause a reduction in fuel economy of up to 10%. And if your riding a motorcycle, you already know how vital properly inflated tires are for your safety! So why use Nitrogen? Drivers need to understand that the mostcritical factor for maximizing tire life, tire safety and performance is maintaining the proper inflation pressure in their tires and Nitrogen is the best solution. The benefits of nitrogen inflation have been extensively documented and are irrefutable. With increased media exposure and an increase in tire dealers and service centers offering nitrogen, consumers recognize and appreciate the benefits of nitrogen now more than ever as the overwhelming quantity of the ‘new’ facts and findings regarding nitrogen inflation coming out is quite positive. The scientific data that is available is irrefutable: nitrogen doesn’t permeate through a tire like the oxygen in compressed air, hence tires last longer and fuel economy and safety is enhanced. The result is increased tire life, improved fuel economy, improved performance and handling, extended tread life, and better retention of tire pressure than those filled with air. Do I still have to check the pressure in my tires? Industry research has shown that when asked if they checked their tire pressure regularly, most consumers admit that they don’t and a number never do, therefore tire manufacturers recommends that consumers check their pressure monthly or before any long journey. If your on a motorcycle, you want to check before every ride! Keep in mind, Nitrogen will keep your tire properly inflated 5-6x longer than air, but regular checks of tire condition and pressures will still be essential.
And just as important, Tire pressure must be checked with a quality air gauge, as tire inflation pressure cannot be accurately estimated through visual inspection. One of the prevalent misconceptions with Nitrogen is that you can only top up your tires with Nitrogen. Not true at all. Once your tires are filled with Nitrogen (with at least a 95% purity level), you won’t negatively affect the purity by topping up with air because the air you are putting back in already has 78% nitrogen. More on that in the next article. Benefits of Nitrogen: Nitrogen Saves Time, Money, and Tires • Dramatically slows pressure loss • Improves fuel economy • Reduces tire oxidation • Eliminates interior wheel and rim corrosion • Reduces running temperatures and pressure fluctuations • Decreases false alarms in Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems • Improves Performance • Improves steering, handling and braking • Dramatically Reduces chance of tire blowouts Inflating your tires with Nitrogen is the clear winner for safety, performance and value. I will continue to write about fuel and tire saving solutions and the merits of Nitrogen. Until then, feel free to contact me for more information and help to make scientifically proven, informed choices on tire and fuel management solutions. Been in an Accident? By: Barinder Sanghera
Barinder Sanghera is a lawyer practicing at Sanghera Sandhar Law Group in Surrey, B.C
Accidents are called accidents for a reason; no-one plans for them to happen. A person involved in an accident is often left feeling shocked, in disbelief, and uncertain (and quite often, in physical pain). Putting aside the law and legal technicalities, what should you do immediately after an accident? What to do often depends on the severity of the accident, but always find out who was involved in the accident: the names of the other drivers and owners and license plate numbers. ICBC can cause you problems if the identities of all of the parties are not known, so it is important to know who was involved. It makes everything else in the claims process smoother. Next, if the damage looks severe (more than just a fender bender), it is important to call 911. If there is any doubt as to the severity of the accident, it is better to call 911 and be safe rather than sorry. Calling 911 will usually bring out the Fire Department, Ambulance, and Police (the “First Responders”). The First Responders can help treat injured people, sort out witnesses, and ensure the accident scene is organized amidst the chaos of an accident. If possible, take photographs of the scene of the accident and the damage to the vehicles. Also, if possible, write down the names and numbers of any potential witnesses. Sometimes, however, there are no witnesses to an accident. It is a requirement to call ICBC as soon as possible to report the claim, and definitely within 24 hours after an accident. ICBC will provide a claim number and will handle the claim. The adjuster working for ICBC will likely ask you questions about how the accident occurred. It is much better to tell the adjuster what you personally know about the accident, and not what others have told you. It is imperative to tell the truth. You will be required to sign an accident application form. However, you are not required to sign a statement or other forms. If you have any doubt, review the docu-
22

ments before signing them and ask what the purpose is of each document you are being asked to sign. Once again, it’s better to knowledgeable about everything you sign. Finally, if you have been injured in the accident, make sure you go see a doctor as soon as possible. That way, ICBC will not be able to say that you were not injured in the accident. Even though you may not initially feel any pain, it is not uncommon for pain to start a few days after the accident. And remember, an adjuster can never simply close your claim. In British Columbia, most accidents have a limitation period of two years. That means that you have two years from the date of the accident to file and start a lawsuit in Small Claims Court or in the Supreme Court of B.C. Therefore, you should never feel rushed to settle your claim. It is always a good idea to contact a personal injury lawyer if you have any questions about the accident, injuries, or claim. Most personal injury lawyers are willing to sit and have an initial consultation about your case. You have nothing to lose but may have lots to gain. Whether you choose to hire a personal injury lawyer or not is your choice; but make sure that any choice you make is in your best interest. The above information is for typical ICBC accident claims. Many claims are not typical: fault may be an issue; it may be a hit and run accident; one or more drivers may have been intoxicated; and, the car may have been stolen are just some examples of non-typical cases. These are examples of claims that will be much more complicated. Remember, an accident can be a terrifying ordeal, but try to deal with it in the best and most responsible way possible. It is better to be safe than sorry.

“AUDI TDI DIESEL” You’ve come a long way baby 24

2014 Audi A7 TDI Reviewed by: J. Dhatt - SJ Power Media Inc.

he last few years have shown a dramatic shift in the luxury sedan class, with more and more manufacturers developing cars that showcase a sportier presence. In 2012, Audi joined the likes of the BMW 550GT and Porsche Panamera by introducing the all-new A7, a coupe-like luxury sedan that came outfitted with a hatch. From an exterior design standpoint, not much has changed for 2014; however, when I was handed the keys to the new 2014 A7, I couldn’t wait to test the new TDI Turbocharged engine – yep, that’s right, DIESEL. 2014 Audi A7 TDI On the outside, the Audi A7 is a beautiful looking car. The front end is clearly Audi, with its signature LED’s, 4 rings, and an aggressive front fascia. The lines of the front bumper blend very nicely with the sides of the vehicle and lead elegantly to the rear, where again they merge seamlessly into the rear bumper. The swooping roofline and thin pillars make this coupe-like 4-door look like its moving, even when standing still. But the car is more than just gorgeous in that the design elements make it functional. For example, rather than going with a trunk, Audi has added a very well-hidden hatch that increases storage space. This sedan can easily accommodate five adults, with their luggage, which is quite remarkable considering its curb appeal. Carrying on with functionality is the rear spoiler that activates above 130 km/h and retracts below 80 km/h – if you’re like me, you’ll want to keep the spoiler raised by just flicking a switch. Step into the vehicle and you’ll notice how far Audi has come with its design and choice of materials. Gone are the days of a boring interior; now, Audi interiors are sexy, refined, and elegant, but not overbearing. My test A7 was equipped with most of the options, including leather interior, navigation, heated seats, rearview camera, keyless entry with push-button start, and so forth. One aspect of the new design that I really like is the standard full seat in the rear; until last year, only rear buckets were available. If you’re like me and have children, this full rear seat is a definite plus. One aspect of design that you’ll need to compromise with is rear headroom. Yes, the coupe-like sloping roof is beautiful, but it does reduce rear headroom, especially for taller passengers. Is it a deal breaker? Not at all, according to my rear passengers when asked. Overall seating is very comfortable, yet still retains some firmness of a sports car. For the front passengers, the interior is definitely more like a cockpit, thanks to the high center console, wrap-around horizontal lines, and placement of all controls and gauges. At the center of the dashboard sits a beautiful 8” crystal clear LCD screen that shows all aspects of the vehicle’s MMI system, vehicle information, and settings controls. What’s great about the screen is that if you don’t want to see it, for example on long drives, just push a button and it gently retracts, with the lines blending right into the dashboard. In my opinion, Audi’s MMI is the best computer system in the market. It is just so intuitive, user-friendly, and easy to learn – one day behind the wheel and you’ve mastered the entire system. For the pilot, er driver, the gauge cluster is pure eye candy, especially with the colours for day and night. Once again, let’s talk functionality. All controls, whether on the center console, lower dashboard, or on the steering wheel are placed within reach, reducing any need to stretch. What’s more is that the gauge cluster packs so much information, but in such an easy design, that you can’t help but smile and know exactly what you’re wanting to change or adjust will do just that. Are you always searching on the side of the seat to set your memory position? Well, Audi has placed the memory buttons on the door panel – pretty functional again. Ready to drive? Okay, but let’s get the numbers out of the way first. This TDI engine churns out 240 hp and a whopping 428 lbs/ ft. of torque. That’s enough to rocket this car from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, while being fuel efficient, with ratings of 8.5 (city) and 5.3 (highway) L/100 km respectively; now there’s two concepts that hardly ever go hand-in-hand, until now. The engine is mated with an 8-speed transmission and Audi’s Quattro Drive system. On the road, the new A7 is a driver’s dream with the engine providing 26

effortless acceleration. On so many occasions, I had to double check the speedometer and then slow down – that’s how smoothly the car pulls away. Another option that came with my test vehicle is called Drive Select, in which you can customize the steering, throttle response, and suspension, or preselect from Comfort, Automatic, or Dynamic modes. Now, you can really tailor the car to your driving preferences. I switched frequently between Comfort and Dynamic mode and let me tell you, there was a noticeable difference. What also really impressed me was how quiet the A7 TDI is – it clearly isn’t your dad’s diesel. Sitting on the inside, none of the passengers could tell it was a diesel, and on the outside, there was just a slight amount of knocking. The electric steering provides good feedback and the 19” tires and wheels provide a good ride. Take my advice and DO NOT get the 20” wheel package because you will compromise ride quality. For safety, the Audi A7 comes loaded with all the standard front, seat and curtain airbags, ABS, traction control and so on. For a little bit more, options such as Vision Package and Driver Assist Package provide heads-up display, night vision, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and lane departure warning. The Audi A7 TDI is another vehicle that is breaking away from the normal sedan look, which is probably going to be a trend in the future. This sexy new car, one of my favourites, is gorgeous to look at, is driver oriented, has tonnes of power, and only sips fuel. Can’t get much better than that. The 2014 A7 TDI starts at $ 72,900.

Maintain Your Classic Car

he Plymouth Barracuda is undoubtedly one of the most beloved muscle cars of all time. With Chrysler now revived and going strong, their newly up and running SRT division is getting ready to release several new models. If the new 2014 Viper is any indication, these upcoming cars could potentially become game changers in terms of performance, quality, and value. Needless to say we’re stoked. But let’s look back once again at one of Chrysler’s most coveted vehicles. Sadly, their Plymouth division is long gone but there was a time in which some of the most famous muscle cars bore the brand’s badge. The Barracuda, many will argue, was one of their finest models as it combined all of the essential muscle car traits - often a smaller car with a large displacement engine. Although it was discontinued back in 1974, the Barracuda has forever been in the hearts and minds of countless fans. In 1996, those fans were given the pleasure of seeing a Barracuda convertible appear on television every week in the hit series “Nash Bridges”. For the course of six seasons, Nash Bridges (played by Don Johnson) and his partner Joe Dominguez (Cheech Marin) solved crimes and cruised the streets of San Francisco in Nash’s yellow Barracuda. For the #1 car used in the early seasons, it began as a 1970 ‘Cuda with a 340 V-8 and a four-speed manual transmission. For filming, the car was converted with a higher output 360 V-8 and updated with a 1971 ‘Cuda bodywork, including a Shaker hood scoop to simulate a Hemi. When the show ended in 2001, the final ‘Cuda had the 360 swapped for a 426 Hemi crate engine, definitely making it more fun to drive. Like Nash Bridges, cars have been a central focal point in other notable TV series, most notable being The Dukes of Hazzard, Magnum PI, and Knight Rider. In addition, movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, Days of Thunder, The Italian Job, the Fast and Furious series and of course, Transformers, have shown off a variety of newer and classic cars. We look forward to more TV shows and movies that highlight cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
eeping classic cars is fun and satisfying. Below are 4 of the most useful tips for optimal classic car maintenance. Proper storage The fist tip for maintaining a classic car is to store it properly. It has to be protected from the outside elements to prevent rusting and other problems that the changing weather can bring. If you plan to keep your car inside the garage for a specific amount of time like say, all winter, be sure you’re doing the right things like draining fluids, greasing and waxing to maintain its beauty. Wash your car regularly Washing your classic car regularly not only keeps it clean, it also helps in preserving the essential parts like paint and other body parts from deteriorating if done properly. Using the right kind of car shampoo is important because it contains less salt that may be helpful in cleaning up your car but it can also remove the car’s protecting polish. Using different sets of towels for each specific part could also help in reducing damage done by washing. Change the oil regularly Changing a classic car’s engine oil in a regular basis is important for your vehicle. If you want to keep a classic car in its perfect running condition, the oil should be replaced regularly. Change your car’s oil every 2 thousand miles is good for your car. Just make sure you run your car a couple miles before draining it to wash away anything that could lead to future problems. Drive your classic car One thing about classic car owners is that they collect these types of vehicles and just store it in their garage and using their standard cars for everyday use. Like all of the things in the world, cars, may it be classic or not, needs to be used regularly to keep it in its finest form. It needs to get out and breathe fresh air so as not to let its parts rot inside your garage. Proper storage is necessary to protect it from harsh elements, but just keeping it inside your garage forever isn’t doing it any good also. May 2014

DRK Technology & Innovations On May 1, 2014, DRK Magazine was invited to the Michelin Tire Event in Vancouver, BC. The event allowed journalists to road test the new Premier A/S tire through a course and compare acceleration, braking, cornering, and grip against other tires, including those of a competitor. Professional race car driver and driving expert Carl Nadeau was on hand to give information about the new Premier A/S and provide tips for the daily driver. Tires are definitely a big investment and given the plethora of brands, types, and categories, it’s not easy to determine the best tire for your vehicle. Personally, I always have two sets of tires for my car – a dedicated winter set and a performance summer set, which is probably overkill for the driving that I do on a daily basis. The last time I purchased a set of all-seasons (A/S) was over 10 years ago. That being said, A/S tires are almost always stock on new vehicles sold at dealerships, and the tires of choice when it comes to replacing them. Michelin unveiled its new Premier A/S at the Detroit International Auto Show in early 2014. This revolutionary tire carries the, “Safe When New. Safe When Worn” slogan. What makes the new Premier A/S so unique? According to Michelin, the EverGrip technology has three major components. First, the Premier A/S uses high amounts of silica, a polymer that improves rolling resistance and fuel consumption. In addition, Michelin uses sunflower oil, which keeps the tire more pliable in colder weather. Second, the tread pattern has been changed to increase actual rubber contact on the road. The new tread design has a more trapezoidal shape in which the grooves widen with wear, delivering wet traction. Finally, there is the use of the “emerging grooves” – these are rain grooves that lie hidden under the outer layer of compound along the tire’s shoulder. As the tire wears, these grooves emerge and provide traction similar to that of a new tire. Did all this new technology provide a noticeable difference during the test runs? Even though we didn’t have analytical date, we were pleasantly surprised. During the test runs, I drove equivalent cars, but which were equipped with different tires: the first was on regular Michelin all-seasons; the next on Michelin winter tires; the third on the new Michelin Premier A/S; and the last on Goodyear Assurance. For each of the four cars, I did 3 test runs to get a good idea on acceleration, braking, and cornering on wet surfaces. Acceleration was not the target but I was able to get up to about 75 km/h before I slammed on the brakes on all cars (ABS turned on). Based on the number of cones crossed, I was able to get a somewhat accurate idea of braking distance. Of the four tires, I would safely say that I stopped in a shorter distance on the new Premier A/S; not by much, but when it comes to avoiding an accident, a few feet can make all the difference in the world. The next part of the course was going through a course and testing cornering, steering response, and grip. What would surprise most people is that the winter tire is not a great tire of choice on a wet surface, and thus, the worst performer. With respect to cornering, steering response, and grip, the new Michelin Premier A/S was the best wet performer of the bunch. I was able to stay on course, and at higher speeds, as compared to the other tires. While driving on the regular Michelins, snow tires, and Goodyears, I had to consistently reduce speed to maintain control through the course. Never-the-less, I still hit many cones. With the Premiers, I had much better control of the vehicle and did not hit even one cone, even though I was travelling faster. As I mentioned before, in no way were our tire test results confirmed by any objective, analytical, or computer assisted data. However, by completing 3 runs on each tire on the same wet track using the same cars, I would be confident in saying that the new Premier A/S tire certainly backs Michelin’s claim of excellent wet performance throughout its wear life. It’s important to note that tire choice should depend not only on usage, but on location and weather conditions; for those of us living on the West coast, where wet weather in the norm, the Premier A/S is an excellent choice and definitely recommended. 32

hen the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) first became popular in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, they were mostly used for off-road purposes. Fast forward to 2014, and most SUV’s rarely see gravel roads, let alone showcase their off-road capabilities. The modern luxury SUV is built for the active family who mostly drives around town and needs to take the occasional trips to the mountains. For that purpose, the Mercedes-Benz M Class is a top contender in this category. My test vehicle was the 2014 Mercedes ML 350 BlueTEC 4Matic. This 3rd generation M Class, which was launched in 2012, is a nice mix of contemporary and conservative styles. Compared to past models, the exterior is more aggressive, with its imposing front end, complete with large air dams, distinctive broad radiator grille, and large center star. The sides of the vehicle have more sculpted and elongated lines that extend to the characteristic C-pillars. To give a sportier stance, the roof line descends to the rear, where there is a powerful-looking roof spoiler, horizontal lines in the tailgate, and LED tail lights. This new M Class is a great looking SUV, and is exactly what you would expect from Mercedes-Benz. Step into the driver’s seat and you’ll notice a sedan-like feel, with swooping horizontal lines that emphasize width throughout the cabin. The interior is clearly inspired by the flagship S-Class, giving the M Class a much more elegant, sophisticated, and contemporary look. This 5-passenger vehicle has ample room for two tall adults in the rear seats, although seating 3 across may be slightly snug. My two younger daughters appreciated the rear heated seats, especially during this past cold December month. At the front, the heated power leather seats provide excellent support, even during long journeys. One aspect of MercedesBenz that I really admire is their conscious effort in ergonomics. For example, front seat controls are placed on the door panels, rather than hiding them on the seat sides. The turn signal lever is also placed at the 10 o’clock position, which I like, rather than the standard 8 o’clock position. My one caveat here with the controls is the location of the electronic gear shifter – it is a lever, located on the right side of the steering column. Now, call me old fashioned, but I prefer the gear shifter, complete with manual shift mode, to be located between the two front seats; to make amends, Mercedes did add paddle shifters. The dash of the M Class is very clean and classier than previous models, although it is still conservative in design. At the center of the dash sits a 7-inch multimedia screen, and it displays all navigation, radio, telephone, and climate settings. The screen is bright and the images in navigation and camera mode are crisp. The Bluetooth and voice controls are accurate and work very well – in addition, when making calls, people on the other end could hear me loud and clear, even at highway speeds. My test May 2014

2014 Mercedes ML 350 BlueTEC vehicle came equipped with the Premium Package, which added a rear-view camera and a 360-degree view – this is another option that all buyers should get because it makes parking and getting into tight spaces a breeze. Another ergonomic design feature that I really like in the M Class is that the buttons for making calls, placed to the right of the screen, are just that – buttons that you can press, rather than having to turn a dial and input numbers. Once you fire up the vehicle by pressing the start button, you’ll notice that the ML350 BlueTEC is surprisingly quiet. With most diesel engines, there is some knocking noise present – this is not the case with the new ML. On the road, when driving in Comfort Mode, the vehicle behaves as a luxury SUV should: smooth, predictable, and comfortable. In Sport Mode, there is more crispness in the steering, the suspension is tighter and the rpm limits are raised slightly, giving higher shift levels. The electromechanical steering is responsive and forgiving, and in Sport Mode, offers good feedback from the

road. This vehicle is not aimed at winning a slalom course, but it will take you to your destination in style and grace. I was also able to test the capability of the 4Matic as the ground was piled with snow and slush. Maneuvering the vehicle around the slick and slushy roads was no problem and handling on icy roads was great. This vehicle is perfect for any Canadian weather and terrain as the suspension is remarkably versatile for on- and off-road driving. The M Class is available with 4 engine choices. The base ML 350 V-6, which was completely redesigned last year, has 302 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. This motor is one of the best in its class and springs the vehicle into action from rest or when pressed to pass. The ML 550 V-8 produces 402 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. The top of the range is the ML 63 AMG, which produces 518 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Now, my favourite motor has to be the ML350 BlueTEC, which produces 240 horsepower and a whopping 455 lb-ft of torque. This motor has enough
spirit to tackle a V-8 yet only sips fuel, giving a combined EPA rating of 8.9 L/100 km. All engines are mated to a 7-speed Tronic Plus automatic transmission and hit most sweet spots along the entire rpm range. As you would expect, safety has always been at the forefront for Mercedes-Benz. The M Class has standard ABS, 11 front, side, knee and curtain airbags, traction control, and stability control. The M Class also has features such as engine shut-off, unlocking of doors, and hazard light activation in the event of an impact. Plus, with options such as Distronic Plus, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and Attention Assist, the occupants are ensured the highest levels of safety. The 2014 Mercedes Benz ML350 BlueTEC was a pleasant surprise as it was a much more sophisticated and refined vehicle than I expected. If you don’t need a 7-passenger SUV, the M Class is an excellent choice, especially with the BlueTEC engine. The M Class starts at $59,900, while the BlueTEC starts at $61,400.

BMW Vision Future Luxury Concept Could Hint at New Flagship There’s no denying that BMW has been very creative with its recent launches (3 Series GT, anyone?) and it doesn’t show signs of slowing down. Coming as a bit of a surprise is the BMW Vision Future Luxury concept, which makes its debut at the Beijing Motor Show. At first glance it’d be easy to assume this concept hints at a 7 Series successor. The flagship, after all, has been around since 2008
would slot about the 7 and possibly share its platform with the Rolls-Royce Phantom. BMW Vision Future Luxury Concept Rear Three Quarter Regardless of what it may or may not preview, BMW says the sedan concept is a design study, previewing the automaker’s “intelligent lightweight engineering, innovative interior design and a radically new user interface design.” BMW also makes many references to its lightweight construction, suggesting its body is composite-intensive, much like the i3 and i8. Other notable design cues are its suicidestyle doors, made possibly by an intricate Bpillar design that is integrated with the front seat frame. The concept’s front end is standard BMW, including its oversized twin kidney grille and quad headlight design. The side profile shows hints of the sexy Pininfarina-

and is now a bit of a wallflower, especially compared to the new and impressive S-Class sedan. But a closer look at the concept’s proportions suggest this could be something bigger, perhaps the rumored 9 Series sedan that
penned Gran Lusso Coupe concept that debuted at last year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este show, while the massive rear end showcase quad exhaust tips and thin taillights that feature strands of organic LEDs, which BMW says are thinner than human hair. Inside, the rear passengers are treated to reclining seats, fold-away tables, and high-tech-gadgets including a tablet that controls most infotainment functions. Meanwhile, the minimalist cockpit showcases only the essentials, with most everything controlled by touchscreen or capacitive buttons. Overall, the large sedan is relatively handsome and we’ll likely see more of it after it makes its debut in Beijing.

Is Your Bike Ready for Spring Riding? A. Charge your battery:The heart of your
bike’s electrical system and the source of power to get-up and goin’ is your motorcycle battery. The prudent already have their battery on some form of trickle charger. [Tip: keeping your battery charged can add multiple lives to your energy cell.] But if you don’t have your battery on a charger, the first thing to make your motorcycle rideready is to charge your battery.

Change the oil & filter:If you followed our recommendations for winterizing your bike, you changed the oil before putting it in storage for the year – but if not, now’s the time to do it. Swap that stale lubricant for fresh clean oil and a new filter. If you don’t do the work on your bike, make arrangements with your favorite motorcycle maintenance facility to accomplish this important task.
F H
C. Tires:These jewels are where the
‘rubber meets the road’ literally, so pay special attention to them. Do a full 360 degree check on each tire for any cracking or punctures. Also, check for wear. Excessively worn tires are more easily punctured and less likely to maintain proper traction. On many tires, tread wear indicator bars signal a need for replacement, but another easy check – if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head on a penny when inserted in the tire tread, Lincoln’s head facing down, it’s time for a new tire. If your tires pass the wear test, inflate them to manufacturer’s inflation specs and your rubber is ready to go.
D. Fuel:If you stabilized the fuel in your
motorcycle during the winterization process, you should burn through it or siphon it out and replace it with fresh fuel. If you didn’t winterize, and also didn’t fill the tank before storing, check the fuel tank for rust, which may have formed due to water condensation. If the tank is clean, fill it and ‘ride-on’. If there are signs of rust, you’ll live with the consequences – fouled carburetor, clogged fuel filter, etc. – until you replace the tank. 40

Cables & Pivot points:A Spring tune up of cables and pivot points is time well spent. One product you should consider for this task is Bel Ray 6-in-1 spray lubricant. Use it on anything that pivots or slides – cables, levers, pedals, kick-stand, etc. Exclusions to its use are chains and drive assemblies. We recommend using chain and driveline lubricants specifically designed for this task. Check with your motorcycle manufacturer for recommended products. Bel Ray is also not recommended for ‘fogging’ fuel tanks and combustion cylinders. Use fogging oil designed specifically for this purpose as part of your winterization at the end of the riding year.

Lighting: Turn on your motorcycle’s power and check all the lights for any that have inoperative bulbs and replace them i.e. brake lights, turn signals, headlights, etc. Often, replacement bulbs come in twos, so save extras for the next time you need one. Occasionally, an outage may be due to a fuse failure. Replace the spent fuse, but monitor the outage situation – there may be more awry than a burnedout bulb. Repetitive fuse failures can signal a deeper electrical problem, which may require professional help.

Brakes:Stopping your motorcycle safely is just as important as insuring your bike can accelerate. Before you hit the road, thoroughly check all the components of your brake system – lever adjustment, cables, calipers, brake pads, etc. Review your motorcycle’s manufacturer’s manual for tips on proper brake system adjustment. If settings don’t seem right and you’re not comfortable making adjustments, seek professional help. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Fluids:Check for all the motorcycle’s fluid levels – brake, clutch, oil, coolant. Top them off as needed. Look for any leaks on the floor where your motorcycle’s been stored. Another way to check for leaks is to start and warm your bike up to running temperature, then turn it off and check for leaks.

I. Clean: Finally, the old adage, ‘cleanliness is next to Godliness’ is true, and definitely so for your motorcycle. When you’ve taken all the steps to prepare your motorcycle mechanically, thoroughly clean the exterior and your bike will look as good as it runs and you’ll look good riding it!!! May 2014
