Editor’s Note

Jag Dhatt Editor-in-Chief

With another year now almost behind us, it’s time to look ahead to the winter holiday season and upcoming New Year. Can you believe it’s almost 2018? Many of us spend hours on the road every day, from commuting back and forth to work to taking kids to their various activities. We cannot emphasize the need for winter tires for your vehicle(s) – sure, all season tires might do the job, but it’s a known and proven fact that winter tires are much better. Spend the money on them as it’s a small price to pay for the safety of your loved ones. In this issue, we review some pretty amazing vehicles. The new 2018 Volvo XC60 graces the cover – we were invited to beautiful Denver to be one of the first to drive this new SUV. It does not disappoint at all. You’ll also find reviews of the new BMW 530e, Ford F150 Special Edition, GMC Terrain and the GMC Traverse. JGK Media is also happy to report that our editor, Jag Dhatt, is now a Director with AJAC, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. Other members who also were elected included Mark Richardson, Stephanie Wallcraft, Charles Jolicoeur, Jeff Wilson, Day Heyman, and Robert Davidson. Congrats to all! And finally, our team would like to apologize for the lateness in getting our website, www.rackandopinion.ca up to date. We’ve had some issues with the site; however, now, it’s stable and we are uploading all previous content as fast as possible. From our home to yours, have a great holiday season and all the best in the New Year.

Koenigsegg Sets New Production Car Speed Record at 447 km/h

S

wedish carmaker Koenigsegg broke the top speed record for production cars this past weekend, with a verified 447-km/h (277.9-mph) run along a blocked-off stretch of highway outside Las Vegas. The 17-km (11-mile)

N OV / D EC 2 0 17

stretch of Route 160 saw the company’s Agera RS make two official passes in opposite directions with Niklas Lilja at the wheel; the average of those speeds was used to determine the record, reports Koenigsegg, though the speed recorded on one of those runs was rumoured to be as high as 468 km/h (291 mph). Even the much lower average was high enough to eclipse the record set by Bugatti’s Veyron 16.4 Super Sport in 2010, itself a blistering 431 km/h (268 mph). Broken, too, was the unofficial street-legal vehicle speed record of 435.31 km/h (270.49 mph) set by the Hennessey Venom GT in 2014. (That speed was reached running in only one direction.) The Koenigsegg Agera RS was able to pull off the feat thanks to its 1,160-horsepower 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, not to mention the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires wrapped around all four wheels. How long it’ll stay on top is anyone’s guess, since Bugatti’s yet to make a top-speed attempt with its new Veyron successor, the Chiron; and Hennessey has just unveiled its new Venom F5, which it says may be able to top 484 km/h (300 mph).

Ferrari Launches a Limited Edition of its Most Limited Edition

T

he new Ferrari FXX-K Evo is the company’s most insane track-only car to date and is only available to clients that already take part in the company’s XX development programme. Based on the FXX-K, which itself started out as a track-only version Ferrari LaFerrari, the new car is lighter despite having even more external aerodynamic elements. This external package of elements is key to the car’s increased performance. Downforce has been boosted by 23 per cent, meaning it can develop 830 kg of downforce when the car is at the redline in its highest gear for magnet-on-steel levels of grip. This is partly due to a new rear wing design and partly due to external fins that create a vortex of air, passing clean air over the spoiler and pushing away the hot air coming from the car’s front and powertrain components. This aero package upgrade also means that suspension has had to be overhauled and brake cooling significantly improved, particularly at the front of the car, via new larger air intakes. Inside, the cabin has been improved with few distractions and better coherence. The KERS hybrid boost system controls are now on the steering wheel. The screen that displays vital performance information has been redesigned to bemore userfriendly, while the camera that serves as a rearview mirror has also been vastly improved. Yet, as amazing as this car sounds, and as expensive as it will be to own, it can only ever be driven on the track--and even then, only in Ferrari’s own racing series. All of which begs the question: “Why?” In 2005, Ferrari launched the XX programme - it was a racing series with bespoke track-only cars based on its best road-going models, but more importantly as a test for researching and developing

the next generation of Prancing Horse supercars and hypercars. The cars cost millions of dollars: you have to be invited to own one and, while, technically speaking, it’s your car, Ferrari maintains and stores it until it’s time to race, at which point they ship it to the track along with a pit crew. There’s little doubt that the XX race series is incredible fun and one that takes in some of the most renowned circuits in some of the world’s most far-flung destinations. However, the real motivation behind XX is to put the company’s most important clients firmly in the driving seat when it comes to developing the next generation of road-going Ferraris and ensuring they’re significantly better in every way relative to the outgoing generation. The FXX-K Evo will be available as a turnkey car or as an upgrade for owners of the FXX-K. But the only way to know how much the car will cost is to get an invite to the XX programme.

Bellingham Mother Succumbs to Injuries After 6 Days in Coma

A

woman from Bellingham, Wash., has died after her SUV was forced into a water-filled ditch by an erratically driven motorcycle. Mariam Ghaly, 42, spent the last six days of her life in a coma before succumbing to injuries, according to Father Bisenty Gerges of the St. George Coptic Orthodox Church in Surrey, B.C., that Ghaly attended. “Everybody called her the angel of our church. She was so sweet and gentle and caring of everybody,” said Gerges. According to police, Ghaly’s Honda CRV was traveling south on King George Boulevard near 48 Avenue Oct 1 when it was cut of by a motorcyclist weaving in and out of traffic. In an attempt 8

NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

to avoid hitting the motorcycle, Ghaly’s vehicle swerved and then lost control, going into the ditch and rolling over. Ghaly, her husband and their two teenage children were trapped under water. Passersby managed to pull the two children from the car before emergency crews arrived at the scene. The motorcycle driver was later arrested by police. Ghaly is survived by husband Wagih and their children Marina, 15, and Kyrollos, 13, who all suffered minor injuries in the crash. The church has started an online fundraising campaign to help support the family. “They are torn apart,” said Gerges. “It won’t be a short time for their healing.” Police have not said what charges the motorcycle driver is potentially facing.

Polestar Unveils the Polestar 1 – and Reveals its Vision to be the New Electric Performance Brand

P

olestar, Volvo Car Group’s performance brand, has today revealed its future as a new standalone electric performance brand. Polestar confirmed plans for its first three models, a new purpose-built production facility in China and a customer-focussed route to market that will set a new industry benchmark for performance vehicles. Polestar also unveiled the 600hp Polestar 1, the company’s first car, which is set to roll off the production line in mid-2019. Polestar’s technology and product offering benefits from synergies and economies of scale enabled by the Volvo Car Group, helping Polestar to accelerate design, development and production processes at fraction of the time it takes other new entrants. Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar said; “Polestar 1 is the first car to carry the Polestar on the bonnet. A beautiful GT with amazing technology packed into it - a great start for our new Polestar brand. All future cars from Polestar will feature a fully electric drivetrain, delivering on our brand vision of being the new standalone electric performance brand”. The Polestar 1 will form a halo for the future Polestar brand. The Polestar 1 is a two-door, 2+2 seat Grand Tourer Coupé with an ‘Electric Performance Hybrid’ drivetrain. An electric car supported by an internal combustion engine, it has a range of

150kms on pure electric power alone - the longest full electric range of any hybrid car on the market. Its output of 600hp and 1000Nm of torque places the car firmly in the performance car segment. The Polestar 1 is based upon Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) but approximately 50% is new and bespoke, created by Polestar’s engineers. To reinforce its dynamic driving characteristics, Polestar 1 benefits from a host of new technologies, all aimed at making it a true driver’s car. Polestar 1 is the world’s first car to be fitted with the all-new class-leading Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension (CESi) advanced chassis technology. A carbon fibre body reduces bodyweight and improves torsional stiffness by 45%, as well as lowering the cars’ centre of gravity. Additionally, Polestar 1 uses a double electric rear axle which enables torque vectoring. This supports the driver with precise acceleration on each wheel to keep the maximum road grip and maintain speed while cornering. The Polestar 1 will be built in the state-of-the-art, purpose-built Polestar Production Centre in Chengdu, China. Currently under construction, it is due for completion in mid-2018.

Volvo

XC60

D

enver, CO: The front runners in the compact SUV/crossover segment really need to watch their rear-view mirrors because there’s something coming fast, and I mean really fast. After winning accolades of awards for the XC90 and creating quite the buzz with the S90, Volvo knew they were on the right path to becoming dominant players in the premium/luxury categories. And now, even more than ever, the lines between what is premium and luxury are more blurred, thanks to some amazing new vehicles. We were invited to beautiful Denver, Colorado to drive the new Volvo XC60. After making sure that the 90-series family was completely done, attention was turned towards the 60-series and as we expected, Volvo’s got another winner. The XC60, built using the new Scalable Platform Architecture technology, is Volvo’s global best seller. And now, more than ever, it’s going head-to-head with the Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, Lexus NX, and maybe even the Jaguar F-Pace. That’s pretty great company to be in, considering that just a few years ago, the comparison couldn’t be made. Styling – In and Out: In keeping with big brother, the XC90, the new XC60 is a beautiful vehicle. If you’re not careful and looking at it from far away, you could mistake the front half with the XC90. Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights, the norm on all new models, adorn the front end. The grille is also similar, albeit, slightly smaller. The beltline of the XC60 makes the vehicle look taller than it is, which is a plus in my opinion. Rather than looking like a high wagon, the XC60 looks like a true crossover. And get this – you can even get 22” wheels for this vehicle, quite the option for a compact! The real beauty of this Volvo is truly prevalent in its interior – it’s utterly amazing! The use of materials, colours, and accents are not only modern, but tie in perfectly with the brand’s Scandinavian heritage. On a side note, I made a similar comment when I was invited to a Volvo heavy truck launch event that showcased their new VNR and VNL series – truly ahead of its competition. Getting back to the XC60, it’s a very calming interior, especially with the natural, luxurious materials and colours in our test vehicles. Yes, there’s real wood all throughout! Center stage sits the vertical iPad-like nineinch control center, which really controls all aspects of infotainment, climate, and vehicle settings. It’s on par with Tesla’s center stack 12

NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

system and is very simple to use. In our testers, the center stack also powered the Bowers & Wilkins sound system, which is an option that everyone should get. If you want to hear Mozart’s Symphony 35 while drowning out the worldly sounds, well, now you can. The seats of the XC90 are comfortable and supportive. For Canada, heated front seats are standard, while you can get cooled and massage front seats and add rear heated seats. I do have to add that our test vehicles were either Inscription or R-Design, with most options added on as well…yes, we got spoiled by Volvo. Dimensions: The new XC60 is similar to its predecessor, but with some minor changes. One of the more noticeable changes is with the wheelbase, which is now 3.6 inches longer. The longer wheelbase adds some much-needed rear legroom, a weak point noted by many in the outgoing model. The length is up by 1.8 inches but with the vehicle now sits 2.1 inches lower, giving it a more planted, squat look – it really works for this vehicle. Trims and Powertrains: Like the XC90, the XC60 is available in three trims – Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription, all of which can be mated with three powertrains. Even though the Momentum seems like a “base” model, don’t assume. It’s still packed with a bunch of standard features, like a panoramic sunroof, leather, rain-sensing wipers, and a myriad of safety options; with standards like these, many buyers could be very happy with the Momentum; the R-Design and Inscription will, of course, offer more options as standard. Volvo offers the base T5 engine, which is a turbocharged 2.0L that puts out 250HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T6, which in my opinion is the one to choose, has both the turbocharger AND a supercharger, and puts out 316HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. The top T8 is a plug-in hybrid system that sits atop the T6. Ready for this – the T8 puts out 400HP and 472 lb-ft of torque! Before we get ahead of ourselves, the numbers look Jag Dhatt staggering, but in reality, you might Accredited AJAC Journalist not want to spend the extra money as

2018 Volvo XC60

the T6 is a much better value. We’ll talk about this later. In Denver, we were fortunate to have time with both the T6 and the T8 powertrains. The Drive: I’ve been fortunate to have gone to Colorado a few times, twice actually with Volvo. Denver and the surrounding areas are the goto-place for athletes, who train for title matches and world class marathons. We were there just to drive. However, it’s a great location to test vehicles since we are at some pretty oxygen starving altitudes. Let’s get one thing out of the way – many people ask me, “How does it compare to the XC90?” And my answer is that it’s not the XC90. Our drive routes took us through everything from highways to gravel side roads. Overall, the ride quality of the XC60 is quite comfortable, especially since our models were equipped with the optional air-suspension setup. If you’ve got a wish-list, add the air-suspension as you won’t regret it at all. As mentioned before, the seats are supportive and comfortable and keep you tucked in nicely, even when taking some hard corners. Speaking of cornering, the XC60’s steering is sharp and quick, but make sure that on such roads, put the vehicle in Dynamic mode (or customize the Individual mode) as it allows all the systems to work together for a better driving experience. Now, it won’t, and isn’t attempting to carve the roads like a Porsche Macan or Audi SQ5, as it’s making its own roads for its own buyers. We were even happy with the XC60 in Comfort mode, the default that most will enjoy. The one point I wanted to make was the difference between the T6 and the T8 – even though the T8 offers a bunch more horsepower and torque, we really didn’t notice too huge of a difference when driving. Sure, it’s a little punchier off the start, but not nearly as noticeable as we’d expected when passing at highway speeds. The

T8 plug-in hybrid may be attractive to some, but the extra money could be better spent on other options and packages. Safety and Technology: Volvo has created an ecosystem of safety and technology in all of its vehicles; thus, the XC60 is up to par on all of them. One of the best has to be Volvo’s Pilot Assist, in which you press one button and the vehicle engages adaptive cruise control, lane assist with steering assist, and road departure mitigation – note here is that automatic braking and frontal collision systems are also engaged. Thus, you’ve got the closest thing to “autonomous” assisted driving that’s available. We had the chance to test Pilot Assist and it works quite well, providing that the markings on the road are clear. Next on the list is Volvo City Safety – this system detects not only cars, but cyclists, people and for Canada, large animals. The system continuously monitors the road in front and either slows or stops the vehicle to avoid a potential incident. And guess what, we tried the system (very nervously of course) and IT WORKS! In terms of other safety aspects, you don’t have to worry as everything is there to make sure all occupants are safe and secure. Oh, and make sure you get the 360-degree camera as it’s got great resolution and is crystal clear! Closing Thoughts: Volvo cars have come a long way since the boxy look that your parents or grandparents would drive. Today, they are beautifully made, inside and out, and have much higher appeal to a wider audience. The new 2018 XC60 does everything you would want it to and then some. Take my word for it – if you’re in the market for a compact SUV/crossover, take the new XC60 for a test drive because you will be impressed. Starting price for the new XC60 is $45, 900. Terrain

I

t’s not very often that a new SUV, let alone a compact SUV truly sparks my interest. But that seems to be the theme with most GMC products in the last few years. GMC has really pushed to re-image their brand as the modern luxury product. It wasn’t that long ago that Chevrolet was the go to brand and GMC was seen as the retiree version. But everything from the exterior design to the completely updated and intuitive infotainment system seems to be marketed towards the younger, more tech savvy crowd. GMC invited me to the 2018 Terrain unveiling in Quebec, to get a chance to drive the new compact 16

in a variety of different environments. The fact that we went fishing afterwards was a bonus! If I was asked to describe the new Terrain in one word, I’d simply say “gorgeous”. GMC has completely redesigned the Terrain from ground up. Not a single body panel, interior trim, light, frame, suspension component or even driveline has been reused from the outgoing model. And considering GMC has sold over 700,000 units since the firstgeneration model went on sale in 2009, I’d say they’re doing something right. The body on this thing is just stunning. I’d almost compare it to the new F-Pace as far as looks are concerned. I don’t

see a single domestic SUV, compact or otherwise, that looks as sleek or refined as the Terrain. The Denali model has the signature multidimensional grill, LED headlights and beautiful 19” wheels. The C-pillar is almost completely wrapped in glass, giving an illusion of a floating roof. Speaking of roof, the panoramic sunroof is just striking. There are some headroom issues, which we’ll touch on later, but it looks gorgeous and really lights up the cabin. There are chrome bumper surrounds, mirror covers, door trim and handles. The 2.0L turbo even comes with twin exhaust tips. Chrome all the things (in typical Denali fashion, of course)! From a distance, the Terrain does look quite large, but parked next to any other midsized car the “compact” model name really becomes apparent. I guess size isn’t everything! For 2018, GMC has offered 3 different engine choices: the 1.5L turbo, which is standard on the SLE model and has 170hp and 201lb/ft. of torque; the 1.6L turbo diesel which is available on the SLE and SLT models and has 137hp and 240lb/ft. of torque; and the 2.0L turbo which is available on the SLT and standard on the Denali model and has 252hp and 260lb/ft. of torque. I had a chance to drive the 1.6L diesel and the 2.0L turbo on my 350km trip through Quebec City. I have to say, I was very surprised with the 1.6L diesel. It’s so quiet I had to pop the hood and make sure I didn’t accidently grab the 1.5L gas engine. The get up and go is actually decent considering the Terrain weighs in at 3800lbs. And according to GMC, the fuel mileage is 8.5l/100km in the city and 6.1l/100km on the highway – pretty impressive numbers for an all-wheel drive compact SUV with a 6-speed transmission. The 2.0L turbo and the 1.5L turbo both come standard with a 9-speed transmission. I know, 9 speeds now? When will it end?! BUT, man this thing is smooth as silk. It felt like I was driving a CVT but without any of the disadvantages. The 2.0L turbo definitely feels faster, 115hp faster as a matter of fact. Just like any higher horsepower engine the fuel mileage does suffer, 11.2l/100km in the city and 9.0l/100km on the highway. Definitely something to consider when deciding on which trim package best suits your individual needs. Our first trip of the day was a one-hour long drive into the heart of Quebec City’s old district and back. The city was stunning, almost like the French version of Victoria but less hipsters. Cobblestone streets and elevated manhole covers really put the suspension and steering to the test and the Terrain aced it. The bumps were as noticeable as driving over painted lines, where as in most compacts you would probably be readjusting the rear view mirror every 10 seconds. The electric assisted steering was surprisingly nice to use as well. If I hadn’t read about it early,

I would have bet that it was the standard hydraulic assisted setup. The second trip was a highway and mountain road drive where we really got to open up the Denali and hit corners at speed. I know, that’s not what a compact SUV is for but I couldn’t help myself! I felt completely comfortable doing 100+ (lots of plus) km/h on the highway and the twisty mountain roads. There’s a sense of stability and confidence diving into a corner with a suggested speed much lower than the speed limit, almost to the point that I was questioning whether there was some Corvette suspension technology hidden behind those tires. GMC has done a great job making the Terrain easy to drive and comfortable for commuting, but an absolute riot when it needs to be. For 2018, GMC is trying to change the industry as far as what comes standard in the entry level models. Most manufacturers offer absolute base model trims with roll up windows, no CD player and a few even have air condition as an option. Thankfully, the new

Terrain is changing all of that with a huge list of standard features. Bear with me here, it’s a long list: 8-way power driver seat, power passenger seat that folds flat, dual-zone A/C, 4 USB ports, HID headlights, LED taillights, heated mirrors, roof rack, Precision shifter (which could be a plus or minus), auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, leather steering wheel, electronic parking break, hill decent control, Push button start (because racecar!) and active noise cancellation. I warned you it was a long list! I know it sounds too good to be true and I’d be lying if I said I NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

couldn’t find any faults with the Terrain, but I can’t name a single vehicle that doesn’t have some faults. At the end of the day, it’s up to the owner and what they are looking for in a vehicle. All things considered I could only find 3 issues with the GMC Terrain, and considering the laundry list of options, it’s pretty hard to beat this thing. The major one for me was road noise. Anything over 50 km/h and the road noise was loud enough that I had to turn the radio up a few notches. It multiplied in intensity as the speed went up, to the point where at highway speeds, my co-driver and I were struggling to have conversations without making an effort to speak a little louder. I know this sounds bad, but realistically it was maybe an octave louder, but being a journalist it’s something I have to bring up. Even in the Denali, it was surprisingly loud inside the cab. The other major issue, which very well could be personal preference, was the Electronic Precision Shifter. There are push and pull buttons above the center console labelled P, R, N, D and L (+ and -). On paper this is a fantastic idea. In reality… Learning to use the system wasn’t difficult, and you only need 2 fingers to choose which gear you are in. I love companies that push the envelope to change industry standards and shake the “chains” of the industry. The only issue I have with this system is that I’ve only been driving (legally) for the last 12-13 years. In that short span of time, I’ve learned to either drive with a column or console shifter. 90% of the time, the system works perfectly, however it’s the other 10% of the time that’s the issue. In the short time I drove the Terrain, I ran into an issue where I was backing out of a parking stall and someone ran up behind me. In a panic (which happens to all of us from time to time), I tried to put the truck into drive and get out of this gentlemen’s way. Instead, I ended up first putting the wiper blades on full, then opening a cup holder looking for the gear selector. Eventually I found it, but needless to say, I was pretty embarrassed. I don’t know how long It would take to become accustomed to the new system, but at the same time, how often would you jump into someone else’s car and reach for the buttons on a column shift? It’s a great Idea, but I’m just not sure how it’ll pan out. The last issue I have is the window between the rear door and the hatch. It looks absolutely fantastic and really sells the illusion of the floating roof. However, and it’s a big however, is that it’s utterly useless as a window. It starts off at the roof line and ends 6” below it. Unless you have a Peterbilt semi-truck or a City Bus in your corner window it’s a massive blind spot. Sure, the blind spot monitoring will help you out but at the end of the day, if you are the type of driver that still uses your mirrors, it’s just asking for trouble. Now, don’t get me wrong, I just had to get these few issues off my chest. At the end of the day, the Terrain is one of, if not the best, compact SUV I’ve driven to date. To the point where If I needed a family SUV, I would seriously consider picking up a 2.0L Denali for myself. GMC has done a fantastic job reaching out to the Millennial and tech savvy crowd. There are more options in this thing than my cell phone. If GMC keeps this up, they will have the market. The other OEM’s will have to really pull up their socks to keep up.

T

he award-winning Chrysler Pacifica is now available with a new attitude, courtesy of the S Appearance Package. With the S Appearance Package, the 2018 Pacifica gets a sporty look featuring black accents inside and out. Already the most awarded minivan of both 2016 and 2017, the Chrysler Pacifica’s available new look is designed to attract even more attention. “The Chrysler Pacifica definitely stands out in the school drop-off line, and its class-leading style has won over many new customers,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and Fiat, FCA – North America. “The Pacifica’s S Appearance Package takes that style to the next level and offers our customers yet another unique personality that further differentiates Pacifica from the rest of the segment.” The Pacifica’s S Appearance Package features Gloss Black accents throughout the exterior, including grille surrounds, eyebrow accents on headlamps, daylight opening molding and rear valance molding. Eighteeninch wheels with a Black Noise finish are standard, while 20-inch Black Noise wheels are available. The Chrysler wing badges on the front and rear are Black Noise with a Gloss Black insert, while the “Pacifica” and “S” badges in the rear are also in Black Noise. A black roof rack is optional on the Touring Plus and standard on other trim levels equipped with the S Appearance Package. Inside, the S Appearance Package includes black seats with Light Diesel Gray accents and the “S” logo; Light Diesel Gray stitching and Piano Black accents on the steering wheel; and Light Diesel Gray stitching and

Kia Canada and CARPROOF Partner to Raise Awareness of Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

K

ia Canada has enhanced its partnership with CARPROOF to increase awareness and consumer confidence of Kia Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicles. To be included in Kia’s CPO program, vehicles must qualify for a CARPROOF Top Condition™ badge, meaning they must surpass strict safety and condition standards. These badges appear on CARPROOF Vehicle History Reports (VHRs) for Kia CPO vehicles, in addition to prominent placement of Kia’s CPO logo and a statement explaining the benefits of choosing a Kia CPO vehicle. The logo and badge appear on VHRs for these vehicles only until they are retailed, but the vehicle retains a permanent CPO record as part of its history. This provides subsequent owners confidence that the vehicle was thoroughly inspected, reconditioned and warrantied at this point of its life.

22

NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

“This initiative is an effective way for automotive dealers to use a CARPROOF VHR as a selling tool,” says Mike Foster, National Manager, OEM & Lender at CARPROOF. “In addition, the permanent CPO record can help with resale value when the time comes to trade the vehicle in again.” “Kia Canada is extremely excited to further enhance our partnership with CARPROOF to increase transparency into our Certified Pre-Owned vehicle program,” says Stephane Lubin, Manager, National Remarketing and CPO at Kia Canada. “Incorporating Kia CPO badging into CARPROOF reports will naturally expand our ability to provide reliability, dependability and peace of mind for our consumers.” To learn more about KIA Canada’s CPO program, please visit: kia.ca/certified-pre-owned-vehicles. Subaru Clinches 2017 CRC Manufacturer’s Championship with Pacific Forest Rally Win

I

t was another first-place finish for Subaru Rally Team Canada (SRTC) – and another podium sweep for Subaru – at this year’s Pacific Forest Rally in British Columbia, the fifth round of the 2017 Canadian Rally Championship (CRC) season. The victory marks SRTC’s third in a row, and keeps the team atop the championship standings with two events to go despite having had a rough start to the season. It also saw Subaru clinch the 2017 Manufacturer’s championship. Led by Antoine L’Estage and co-driver Alan Ockwell, SRTC emerged victorious even with varied conditions that made the final day of the event particularly challenging. With the team facing ice and snow early on, the choice to run gravel tires cost the team speed, and with it two stage wins the morning of Day 2. With gravel roads in the afternoon, however, it was back to their winning ways for L’Estage and Ockwell, as the pair guided SRTC to its third consecutive victory of the 2017 CRC season. “We’re really thrilled,” Ockwell said after the event. “It sets us up for a very strong finish for the end of the season so we can make one final push to try to win the driver’s and co-driver’s championships.”

Eight of the rally’s top 10 finishers, including all three on the podium, were Subaru vehicles, helping Subaru clinch the 2017 Manufacturer’s championship with 100 points so far this season with two events to go. The championship is a record 13th for Subaru. The 2017 CRC season continues next month in Ontario with 47th running of the Rally of the Tall Pines. The 21-stage event is scheduled to take place Nov. 24-25 in Bancroft, Ont.

New Distracted Driving Penalties in Effect in BC

D

rivers are advised to put their hand-held electronic devices away, as the Province’s new distracted driving penalties hit British Columbia roads and highways today. Now, anyone caught talking on a hand-held electronic device while driving is subject to three penalty points in addition to a $167 fine. This is the same penalty that was already in place for drivers caught texting or emailing. The new penalty for using a hand-held electronic device covers infractions such as talking on, holding or dialing a cellular phone, operating a hand-held audio player (such as an iPod or mp3 player), or programming a GPS. Penalty points remain on a person’s driving record for five years and can result in further sanctions, including prohibitions from driving. Of note, B.C.’s distracted driving legislation also prohibits drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program from using any hands-free device. The fall season is also a time to be aware that distraction is a top contributing factor for drivers in vehicle collisions that involve pedestrians. This is especially important to keep in mind as it becomes more difficult to see pedestrians in dark and poor weather conditions. Distracted driving is the second leading contributing factor of vehicle fatalities in B.C. The Province continues to look at increased fines for distracted driving as part of an overall fine structure review and work is underway to determine what an appropriate amount

24

NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

would be. Key Facts: • Drivers that accrue more than three points must pay an ICBC driver penalty point premium that starts at $175 and will escalate if they receive more points. • A driver who receives two distracted driving tickets in a year would pay $634, which is the cost of two fines and a $300 penalty for six points. • As points build on a person’s driving record, the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles may also identify a driver as high-risk and monitor or prohibit them under the Driver Improvement Program. • High-risk drivers can receive administrative interventions ranging from warning letters, which say their driving record is being monitored, to prohibitions from driving.

Dining with Pashion

Fresgo Inn Restaurant 10102 King George Blvd, Surrey, BC V3T 2W4

R

ecently my sister got to meet with a colleague at her work, with whom I deal with on a regular basis for business. When the colleague mentioned to her that he and I had gone for lunch, my sister demanded to know where we had gone, and why she wasn’t invited. He told her “It’s a hole in the wall just down the street. Big portions and great food, but nothing fancy. You would never take a date there or anything but just go with your friends.” My sister called me demanding to know what this place was and I said, “Yes. We go to Fresgo. It’s been around forever.” Fresgo Inn has been in business over 35 years in Surrey. There used to be a location on Davie Street in Vancouver but it shut down in 2005. The Vancouver location was a hot spot for club goers. After the night clubs had closed in downtown, people would pile in to Fresgo for a late night burger after too many drinks and too much dancing. These former clubbers still recall it with fond memories and say, “They had the BEST burgers!” I have yet to meet a person who hates Fresgo. I took the pickiest wealthiest person I knew just to see the look on his face. At first he was eyeing me strangely as I encouraged him to keep an open mind. But once he got there he loved it! He had breakfast and said if he lived closer, he would come at least once a week and was impressed by the service and cleanliness. Fresgo is cafeteria style. You walk in and choose your order from the boards, pay, and get a light up button for when your food is ready. You choose a table and help yourself to cutlery and condiments and ice water. When your button buzzes and lights up, you approach the line kitchen, which is in front for all to see, and pick up your food. Simple! The portions are huge! Meatballs the size of baseballs! Half a loaf a bread for side garlic toast! Monster pieces of pie! Burgers

the size of the plate! Subs the size of your arm! All of it fresh and all made to order! There is an in house bakery baking beautiful cakes, cookies, buns and loaves of bread which are also sold. I love that the kitchen is right there to see. They can hide nothing. The head chef wears a big white sky high chef’s hat which you can see he is very proud of. Breakfast is served all day. To enter the parking lot, you can only enter via car heading North on King George Blvd due to the medians. If you miss it, you will have to go around and come back. There is plenty of seating inside and outside. My favorite is that they play 80’s satellite radio all day. So if you come, be prepared to enjoy some ambience provided by some neon signs, TV’s and Wang Chung, Kajagoogoo, Culture Club, and Duran Duran. I have been to Fresgo multiple times and will continue to go as long as they’re in business. I took an American friend and he loved it so much, that he came back and took his daughter too! No one hates Fresgo and it’s a great spot for people of all ages. The young and the old love it. There is a kids and seniors menu. At lunch time it is packed full of hungry construction people looking for a hearty meal. They also serve beer if you’re a burger and beer kind of person. Fresgo is open 7 days a week. If you like hot dogs, burgers, BBQ chicken, spaghetti, cake, pizza and blueberry pancakes, then Fresgo is for you. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s great fresh food at great prices. I can’t complain and will be there this week once again to meet a friend for lunch! I can’t wait! Column by- Pash Brar // Mobile Leasing Rep. at Auto One Leasing LP NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

onda took the wraps off one of the most anticipated models with the unveiling of the 2017 Civic Type R at the Geneva Motor Show. The Type R shares the same body style as the 5-door hatchback variant of the 10th generation global Civic platform and is powered by an Ohio built 2.0-liter DOHC, direct-injected and turbocharged i-VTEC inline 4-cylinder. This powerplant puts out 306hp and 295lb-ft of torque. To match this engine, the Type R has an upgraded body and chassis and other track-ready, Nurburgringtuned and tested performance components. According to Honda Canada, the Civic Type R is designed to reward the driver in all driving conditions on the track and on the street, and features three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and +R. For Canada, there is only be a premium-coated trim that features a 7” display touchscreen that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heavily bolstered sport seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum shift knob and sport pedals. The Type R came to dealerships this summer and it’s been a hot item ever since.

hat’s more special than having one of the iconic supercars be built in our very own Canada? Especially one that took the podium at the world famous 24 Hours of Le Mans last year. The 2017 Ford GT is easily one of the hottest and most anticipated supercars in history. Based on looks alone, it’s a piece of fine art, fit for display in any exclusive art gallery. Gone is the supercharged V8 from the previous GT – the 2017 Ford GT features a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that will push more than 600hp. The engine is linked to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. To keep the body weight down to a minimum, Ford will be using both carbon fibre and aluminum. Built by Multimatic Inc., who are masters in the autoparts and motorsports world, the Ford GT will feature technology systems that are ground breaking. For example, the active aerodynamic elements include a multi-position rear wing that mirrors the likes of the P1 and LaFerrari to make sure the rear end stays planted at top speeds. Also cool is that the doors hinge up and forward and don’t incorporate portions of the roof.

Land Rover Discovery

2018 Audi A5 Sportback

L

ast year, I was among the first and lucky few journalists to drive the all-new Discovery in Utah. Replacing the legendary Land Rover LR4, the Discovery is everything the LR4 was, and more! To start, the 2017 Discovery has a completely new design; it’s doesn’t share the LR4’s boxy look; rather it has more in common with the Disco Sport and Range Rover, which I really like. The body has been stretched by 5.5 inches to offer a lot of more usable interior space. The interior is completely brand new and is beautifully elegant – it now shares more similarities with the Range Rover, which will make buyers smile ear to ear. Power for the 2017 Discovery comes from either the 3.0-liter gasoline V6 (340hp and 332 lb-ft of torque) or the new 3.0-liter diesel V6 (254 hp and a massive 443 lb-ft of torque), which is mated to the true and tried ZF 8-speed transmission. But where the Discovery really shines is in its off-road capabilities. This SUV went through everything that was thrown at it without missing a beat. This could just be the most perfect luxury offroad capable SUV. 26

ith couple like styling and sedan like practicality, the new 2018 Audi A5 Sportback is seen as the Audi A7’s younger sibling. It is another viable option for buyers who are looking for a vehicle with a sleek design as well as ample amount of storage space. The Audi A5 Sportback is based on the Audi A4 platform, but the rear end styling is closer to that of a hatchback. Standard under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 252 HP and 273lb-ft of torque, which is linked to a dual clutch 7- speed transmission. This paired with Audi’s iconic Quattro all-wheel drive system propels the car from 0-60 MPH in 5.7 seconds. For those who would rather have a little more power under their foot, choose the S5 variant that offers a 3.0L turbo-charged 6-cylinder engine that is also in the S4. Additionally, the vehicle can be optioned with Audi’s virtual cockpit, one of the most popular options throughout Audi’s vehicle lineup. Combining all these features there is no doubt – the new Audi A5 Sportback has become a head turner since it hit dealerships earlier this year.

BMW Recalling 1.4 Million Vehicles for Fire Risk

B

MW is recalling more than one million cars and SUVs in two recalls due to the risk of fires under the hood, and it’s recommending that they be parked outdoors until repairs are made. A spokesperson for the German automaker says the risk

of fire is very low in both cases, but the vehicles should stay outside “in an abundance of caution.” In both recalls, repairs are expected to start on Dec. 18. The largest of the recalls covers over 740,000 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3

xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i vehicles from 2007-11. Also included is the 2008-11 128i. All have six-cylinder engines. Documents posted Friday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that a heater for the positive crankcase ventilation valve can overheat and cause the valve to melt, increasing the risk of a fire even when the vehicle is not in use. No injuries have been reported. Dealers will replace the heater. The heater is designed to prevent the valve from freezing in cold temperatures, BMW spokesperson Hector Arellano-Belloc said. But irregularities in manufacturing can cause corrosion can lead to overheating. The other recall covers nearly 673,000 cars including the 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi and M3 from the 2006-2011 model years. Also covered are the 2007-2011 328i xDrive, 335i xDrive and 335is, and the 20092011 335d. Wiring for the heating and air-conditioning system can overheat and cause connectors to melt, also increasing the fire risk, even when vehicles are unattended. Four drivers reported injuries. BMW says a wiring connection can corrode and in rare cases cause fires. Dealers will replace the wiring and connectors. The recalls total about 1.4 million vehicles, but some are included in both, BMW said. In total, about 15,000 vehicles are in Canada, a spokesperson told Reuters.

n an automotive market that is pushing the envelope of compact cars and utility vehicles with uber efficient engines, it’s baffling to see that the three top selling vehicle lines in North America are trucks. The King of the heap is the Ford F-Series of Trucks and this has been the case for 35 years. Followed second by GM and then Dodge. Enter 2015 and Ford shook up the truck industry by converting to an almost all aluminum structure and body for its F-Series, providing for a light yet strong design. It was difficult to understand how the market leader would leave behind the industry standard of using high strength steel in construction. Yet, two years on the move has clearly paid off and Ford still retains its dominance.

2017 Ford F-150

Sandeep Gill Trial Lawyer Keystone Law Group

Now here in 2017, Ford continues its maverick attitude by introducing an industry and vehicle first, 10 speed automatic transmission, greatly improving fuel economy ratings. On our test bed this transmission performed flawlessly. It provided clean imperceptible shifts and an incredible highway feel allowing the 3.5L EcoBoost to churn along at full highway speeds at 1,900 to 2,000 rpm. When passing was necessary the transmission quickly downshifted to provide ample passing power and the 10 speed shift indicator displayed to the left of the speedometer was the only way you could actually tell what was happening. Only in deliberate attempts to confuse the transmission could anything be felt. For the average F-150 user this would never be an issue. Speaking of power, Ford revamps the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 for 2017 as well (also a first for this segment in 2011). It offers best in class torque at 470 lb.-ft @ 2.500 rpm, and 375 HP and higher towing capacity at 12,200 lbs. These figures dwarf the tried and tested 5.0L V8. The best way of describing the acceleration you feel in an F-150 with the new EcoBoost is akin to the feeling you get when a Boeing 747 accelerates during takeoff, feeling like a continuous surge of power and push rather than the slam you into your seat feeling. Equally exhilarating, but, different. Since the introduction of the EcoBoost in 2011, the engine has had a positive impact on the environment. The most significant is that on an annual basis over 170 million liters of fuel are saved greatly reducing the Ford’s carbon footprint. That’s from one vehicle and one manufacturer. If the momentum that Ford has initiated flows down the chain to GM and Dodge, and all indicators are pointing to the fact that the boosted V6 craze will continue, the environmental bonuses will be significant. Who says less can’t mean more. The EcoBoost clearly proves it. Overall road manners for the big beast were calm and collected. Despite driving on 20”, relatively, low

profile tires, the truck soaked up the City of Surrey’s potholes, road joints and speed bumps without drama and returned a very comfortable and surprising ride. All aspects of the F-150 proportions scream BIG! The interior boasts a massive center console and 8 inch infotainment system. A center storage bin big enough to carry a backpack and enough rear leg room to seat three adults comfortably and have a fourth lay down at their feet. A host of safety and convenience features such as: an industry first trailer backup system; automated park assist; 360° birds-eye camera view; built in tailgate step system; and built in box step system just to name a few. However, with BIG features and size comes a BIG price tag. Our F-150 Lariat Sport Special Edition, fitted with almost every imaginable option including: twin sunroof and FX4 Off Road package came in at an as tested price of nearly $76,000.00 before taxes. I have to say one thing about the twin sunroof, although, a very attractive feature it created an unusual wind buffet at certain speeds, possibly just a quirk of our test vehicle. The Lower Mainland is an unusual area. We have access to some of the most rugged and natural terrain in the world, but, at the same time are a metropolitan city with all the finer things life has to offer. It’s a place in which you could go camping in the wilderness one night and be back in town to enjoy a four course meal at a five star restaurant the next. Modern half-ton trucks have created a niche luxury driving experience suited perfectly for the Lower Mainland. Providing their owners with well appointed Napa Leather interiors and a host of comfort and convenience features found in the likes of a Mercedes S-Class, but, at the same time being rough and ready to do anything. Ford has just been doing it for so long and so well that they have turned it into a fine art that other manufacturers try to duplicate. The modern pickup, an evolved automobile and in the case of the F-150 Lariat Special Edition, a Tuxedo that’s machine washable.

Auto West and Park Shore:

Recipients of Provincial Green Star Awards

T

he New Car Dealers Association of BC (NCDA), announced Greater Vancouver dealerships Auto West and Park Shore new car dealers had both won a coveted Clean Energy Vehicle for BC (CEVforBC™) Green Star Award for their significant growth in electric vehicle (EV) sales. Auto West received the award for Top Battery Electric Vehicle Sales across the Lower Mainland with 64 units sold during 2016. Park Shore was recognized for Top Plug-in Electric Hybrid Sales with 41 units sold during 2016.

“The Green Star Award is a significant achievement in the sales of Clean Energy Vehicles in British Columbia,” said Blair Qualey, President and CEO of the New Car Dealers Association of BC. “Thanks to Auto West and Park Shore’s significant leadership and determination, these two dealerships are helping to ensure B.C. maintains the highest per capita adoption of electric vehicles in Canada.” The Green Star Awards are a series of CEVforBC™ Program Dealer Awards that specifically recognize the highest number of Clean Energy Vehicle sales across all brands, by provincial region (Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Interior and Northern BC). “The team at Auto West couldn’t be more excited to be a recipient of the Green Star Award,” said Larry Man, General Sales Manager, Auto West BMW. “We take pride in ensuring our customers have the tools and resources they need to make informed decisions – one of those being awareness surrounding the CEVforBC™ Program and associated incentives. Ultimately this level of awareness has resulted in significant sales of battery electric vehicles.”

NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

“On behalf of Park Shore dealership, we are pleased to be recognized for our significant plug-in electric hybrid sales,” said James Duess, General Manager, Park Shore. “At Park Shore, we are dedicated to making our customers happy – this includes incentivizing them when choosing green transportation options for their ride.” EV sales have been steadily increasing, with 11,000 EVs being sold in Canada in 2016 – a 56 per cent increase from the previous year, according to numbers from FleetCarma, a Canadian auto research firm. To date, there are about 30,000 EVs on Canadian roads. Nearly 95 per cent of these sales occurred in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. One of the reasons for the increase is due to the incentive programs available to consumers including the CEVforBC™ program, which is funded by the Province of B.C. and administered by the New Car Dealers Association. CEVforBC™ offers up to $5,000 to B.C. residents who purchase or lease an eligible new battery electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. For the list of eligible vehicles, please visit www.cevforbc.ca. Since the CEVforBC™ program began in 2011, the government has committed more than $14.5 million for vehicle incentives and charging infrastructure to make clean energy vehicles more affordable and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In March 2017, the province saw four per cent of new car sales as EVs, helping to ensure B.C. is on track for a selling target of five per cent of light duty vehicle sales by 2020.

Traverse

S

hediac, NB -- As a born and bred It’s always so interesting to see how the Canadian, I’m always amazed automotive scene shifts and evolves over the when I discover little corners of years. While a few short years ago the economy my country I’ve not yet explored. car ruled supreme, it’s glaringly obvious that SUVs and crossovers have stolen the limelight, I live in a vast and sprawling nation that’s both beautiful to look at and harsh and then some. Case in point; Chevrolet will in its climates and landscapes. From sprawling release not just the Traverse this year but three mountain ranges to wide open fields and raging other new SUVs (Trax, Equinox, Bolt EV) to an rivers and dense forests, they can all be found in eager public ready to sign up for life behind the wheel of a roomier, more capable vehicle. And the Great White North. So, when I was asked to take a short flight to one of the most eastern once they step into the all-new 2018 Traverse, Miranda Lightstone provinces, New Brunswick, to test out the allthey’ll never want to leave. Redesigned from the ground up, the 2018 new 2018 Chevrolet Traverse, how could I say no? Traverse isn’t just sporting a more mature and decidedly handsome new exterior; it’s also wider, longer and Discovering the stunning waterfront landscape of Shediac and its surrounding areas was just as exciting as learning about the slightly higher. These are all fantastic improvements made to a all-new Chevrolet Traverse that’s not just mid-cycle refresh but a vehicle meant to be a bit more imposing on the road. Chevrolet whole new vehicle. did a mint job with the front that’s equal parts modern yet not so

34

NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

2018 Chevrolet Traverse forward-thinking that it will polarize buyers. The Traverse sports a face anyone and everyone will love. With a bold, strong shoulder line, seemingly flared wheel arches and a rear that features a “wrap-around” window look and angular taillights, you might even say the new 2018 Traverse looks sporty. Because it does, especially in Redline edition that kicks everything up a notch with gloss-black trim, 20” black with red accent wheels, and blacked out (neutral density) taillights. In the past, Chevrolet offered upwards of 130 different build combinations for the Travers; however, for this model year they’ve whittled it down to 11, which will make it much easier for buyers looking to assemble their perfect Chevy Traverse. There are two engines available: The tried and true 3.6L V6 that’s paired with a 9-speed transmission (that’s actually quite good… and I kind of feel shocked that I like it if I’m honest). Nine speed transmissions have been popping up around the automotive world, and they aren’t always the best. Confused, choppy and jerky gear changes seem common with 9-speeds, however, Chevrolet have perfected it. At least in the Traverse. Pushing out 305 horsepower

and 260 lb-ft of torque, the 3.6L V6 can also tow up to 2,268kg making it a well-rounded SUV that’s both responsive on the road and highly capable for those cottage weekends with the family. Brand new for the 2018 Traverse is a smaller, more economical engine that’s sure to be a huge hit. The 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and is paired with the same 9-speed transmission. While it’s only available on one model, the RS. It’s main selling feature is its frugal gas consumption

with just 11.7L/100km in the city and a mere9.0L/100km (according to GM). As we traversed (see what I did there) the winding country roads in the areas that surrounded Shediac, I couldn’t help but think

how I could easily live day-to-day with the all-new Chevy Traverse. Spacious and oh-so comfortable inside, you can seat up to 8 in this SUV or seven if you opt for the second-row captain seats. With interior design features that include available leather trimmed seats, embroidered headrests, metal accents, and an available 8” touchscreen infotainment screen (there’s even a hidden storage space behind it, surprise!), as well as a hands-free power liftgate that’s uber convenient for those who always seem to have their hands full. Of note; Chevrolet engineers wizened up to the perils of using hands-free liftgates and added a convenient light that displays on the ground precisely where you need to wave your foot to make the tailgate open. Exploring a country I know and love in the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse only opened up my eyes more to the wonders of Canada and the joys of owning a functional, comfortable SUV in everyday life. The Traverse has grown up nicely and now offers everything you’d expect to find in a full-size SUV all starting at just under $37k.

GM Plans to Add 20 New Electric, Fuel Cell Vehicles to Lineup by 2023

D

etroit automaker General Motors Co. outlined plans on Monday to add 20 new battery electric and fuel cell vehicles to its global product lineup by 2023, financed by robust profits from sales of gasoline-fuelled trucks and sport utility vehicles in the United States and China. “General Motors believes in an all-electric future,” GM global product development chief Mark Reuss said on Monday during a briefing at the company’s suburban Detroit technical center. Future generations of GM electric vehicles “will be profitable,” Reuss said, but added it was not clear when GM could make all its new vehicle offerings zero-emission electric cars. Regulators in China and some European countries have floated proposals to ban internal combustion engines by 2030 or 2040. “We will continue to make sure our internal combustion engines will get more and more efficient,” Reuss said. GM shares were up more than four per cent in midday New York trading on positive comments from Rod Lache, auto analyst at Deutsche Bank. Automakers, including electric vehicle market leader Tesla Inc, lose money on electric cars because battery costs are still higher than comparable internal combustion engines. GM funds its forays into new technology using a river of cash generated by old-technology vehicles popular with its core customer base in the United States heartland. In comparison, Tesla has burned through an estimated $10 billion US in cash and has yet to show a full year profit. GM earned more than 90 per cent of its $12.5 billion US in pretax profits last year in North America, amid robust demand

for its lineup of large sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. The company’s profitable operations in China rely on consumer demand for an expanding lineup of gasoline powered SUVs. GM has previously announced plans to make some of its future electric vehicles capable of driving themselves in robot taxi fleets. The company offered sneak peeks of three electric vehicle prototypes: a Buick brand sport utility vehicle, a sporty

36

NOVEMBER / DECEMber 2017

Cadillac wagon and a futuristic pod car wearing a Bolt badge. GM collaborated with Korean battery maker LG Chem to build the Bolt battery system. Company officials did not say what companies would supply batteries for the larger fleet of vehicles promised by 2023. Fuel cell vehicles will also play a role in GM’s future, the company said. GM showed on Monday a prototype of a rolling, hydrogen fueled platform called “SURUS” that could be used for multiple purposes. The company plans to offer a fuel cell vehicle to retail customers within five years, it said. Toyota Motor Corp , Honda Motor Co and Hyundai Motor Co already are marketing fuel cell vehicles in low volume.

GM chief executive Mary Barra said last month the company plans to introduce at least 10 new electric or hybrid vehicles to the Chinese market by 2020, and open a battery plant this year with Chinese partner SAIC Motor Corp Ltd 600104.SS. China has set goals for electric and plug-in hybrid cars to make up at least a fifth of auto sales by 2025. Some of the electric vehicles GM will offer in China are among the 20 Reuss promised by 2023. GM also hinted that it may take new steps to expand the public infrastructure for rapid recharging of electric vehicles, without offering any details. The No. 1 U.S. automaker joins several rivals, including German automakers Daimler AG, Volkswagen AG and BMW AG, that have pledged to accelerate development of electric vehicles, in response to proposals in China and several European countries to ban internal combustion engines by 2030 or 2040. GM’s announcement comes just two days before rival Ford Motor Co is scheduled to roll out a new strategic plan, and as Tesla Inc ramps up production of its high-volume Model 3 electric sedan.

Nissan to Join Formula E Electric Racing From 2018-19 Season

N

issan will become the first Japanese automotive brand to compete in the all-electric FIA Formula E racing championship starting in 2018. The move to participate in the growing Formula E series gives Nissan a highly visible global platform from which to spread the message of Nissan Intelligent Mobility – the company’s three-pillar strategy to redefine how its vehicles are driven, powered and integrated into society. “As the ultimate expression of the thrill of instant acceleration and agile handling that’s at the heart of Nissan zeroemission driving, Nissan is going to electrify the Formula E championship,” said Daniele Schillaci, executive vice president of global marketing and sales, zeroemission vehicles and battery business, and chairman of Nissan’s management committee for Japan, Asia and Oceania. “Nissan will be the first Japanese brand to enter this growing championship, bringing our long history of motorsports success to the Formula E grid. It will give us a global platform for bringing our pioneering Nissan Intelligent Mobility strategy to a new generation of racing fans.” Nissan cemented its position as the leading mass-market zero-emission brand with last month’s unveiling of the new Nissan LEAF. The second generation of the five-door all-electric vehicle is packed with ingenious technology that embraces the early steps of advanced driver assistance. The new LEAF replaces the first-generation model, which pioneered accessible zero-emission mobility with its launch in 2010. Nissan has sold more than 280,000 LEAFs globally, making it the world’s best-selling electric vehicle. LEAF customers have driven more than 3.5 billion zero-emission kilometers combined. “Nissan’s DNA is rich in innovation in electric mobility, not to mention a long history of success in motorsports,” added Schillaci. “It makes sense that we bring these two core elements together by competing in Formula E.”

Launched in 2014, the FIA Formula E championship is a global racing series where teams and manufacturers compete with all-electric powertrains on street circuits set up in major urban centers around the world. “To have a name like Nissan coming on board is a momentous day for the series,” said Alejandro Agag, the founder & CEO of Formula E. “Not only is it great to welcome a new manufacturer to the Formula E family – it’s great to see our first Japanese manufacturer entering the frame, showing truly how global the electric revolution is. Japan is a country at the forefront of new technologies, with one of the biggest followings of Formula E. The shift toward sustainable mobility is in motion, and it’s

2018 BMW 530e

2018

BMW

530e O

ur first experience with the latest 5 Series came courtesy of last year’s 540i, powered by the kind of smooth, strong six-cylinder powertrain on which BMW built its reputation. That car’s 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque impressed us with its ability to push this big sedan to 100 km/h in less than five seconds, a level of performance that bests past generations of the speedy M5 sport sedan. But changing times dictate new priorities, and like other automakers, BMW is addressing them through technologies like smaller, turbocharged four-cylinder engines, electricity and, in the case of the new-for-2018 BMW 530e, a combination of both. The 530e is the first 5 Series to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain, joining a range of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) BMWs that includes versions of the 3 and 7 Series sedans and the X5 crossover. It’s powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that works with an electric motor to make 248 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and while those more modest figures result in a 100 km/h acceleration sprint more than a second slower than the 540i, this new hybrid variant feels deceptively powerful thanks to its ability to drive on electricity alone. That’s especially true in city driving, where a fully charged 530e can be set to draw on the battery under the trunk floor almost exclusively (the exception being fullthrottle acceleration). That puts just 111 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque at your disposal, but its nearly vibration- and noise-free delivery makes the electric half of the powertrain feel more potent than it is. Pushing the accelerator to the floor fires up the gas engine, which means more acceleration but adds a mechanical soundtrack that actually made the car feel less impressive than in its electric drive mode. Like other 5 Series models, the 530e offers its driver a sport mode that engages the gas engine regardless of throttle input for more spirited driving. And because electric cars are best suited to city driving, one of three modes exclusive to the 530e can be used to keep the gas engine on for highway cruising in order to preserve electricity for stop-and-go situations. As the driver, all you have to do is remember which mode to select, and when. If you let the 530e make the decisions about what power source to use, transitions between electric and gasoline power are largely seamless. In most situations, the gas engine is nearly silent, only becoming noticeable in aggressive acceleration. Like the rest of the 5 Series range, the 530e uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive AWD system. BMW says the electric half of the 530e’s powertrain is capable of up to 45 km of driving range, but the best I could manage in a week of driving was about 30 km. That was nearly enough to cover my daily commute to and from work, but the deficit proves that getting the most out of an electric car requires a very different driving style than we’re used to employing in BMW’s cars. BMW hasn’t published its Natural Resources Canada-sanctioned fuel consumption estimates for the 530e, but our test vehicle averaged 5.2 L/100 km. That’s about what 40

we’ve seen in more mainstream, efficiency-focused hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Ford Fusion, and is a respectable result for a car that weighs 300 kg more than this car’s gasoline-powered 530i sibling. For all the 530e presents a new way to propel a mid-size BMW, it does so in the sort of accommodations any returning 5 Series owner will be familiar with. Our tester was fitted with niceties like multiadjustable Nappa leather-covered heated and ventilated front seats with a massage function, in an interior that provided comfortable space for four people. Rear-seat occupants got side window shades and everyone inside benefited from the security of active safety features like collision warning with automatic braking and evasion assistance, blind-spot warning and rear-collision prevention. Many of those safety features are made possible by the technology that will allow autonomous driving; in fact, the 530e can, theoretically, drive itself for short distances, but will command the driver to take the wheel after a few seconds. Naturally, though, all of those items (and many more) were listed as options on a car carrying a base price of $66,900—a

$4,500 premium over the more conventional 530i—and a 530e kitted out like the one we drove would cost nearly $83,000 before taxes and fees. The 530e makes it clear that BMW recognizes many of its customers are no longer concerned with out-and-out performance statistics. Instead of focusing on acceleration times and steering feel, the 530e balances smooth acceleration with enough driving feel to satisfy the occasional urge to tackle a highway on-ramp at high speed. Like it or not, the 530e is a taste of what BMW loyalists can expect from their favourite automaker as it adjusts its course to adapt to a quickly evolving marketplace. However, the combination of an electric driving range of 30 km and an $80,000-plus price will do little to impress anyone tempted by a $97,000 electric-only Tesla Model S that will cover 400 km. This is a nicely-executed car that will serve well to introduce the more conservative of the brand’s fans to electrified vehicles, but it’s clear BMW’s best work in battery power is yet to come.
