DRK Editorial

Enjoy The Summer! The sun has been shining, the days have been warm, and it’s summer, which means family trips and holidays. Hopefully, you had a chance to get way with your families, or are perhaps in the planning stages for doing this in August. July has been a very busy month for the entire JGK Media and DRK teams, and we have made some noteworthy changes. The first change to DRK Magazine is the introduction of our new DRK Marketplace, a special section in the centerfold area, where readers can find great deals on new and used motor vehicles. Check out this section on pages 24 & 25. The next change will be taking place in the month of September, where DRK Magazine will be adding some Lifestyle sections, including cuisine, fashion, travel, and homes. These new sections will only be additions and will not take away from the essence of this being a motor vehicle magazine. July was a great month for me, as I had the opportunity to drive and review some great vehicles, which you will read about in this issue. The new 2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe is an amazing vehicle that has top notch engineering, performance, and design. Taking inspiration from the E-Type, this new cat certainly turned heads wherever I went. The Mercedes Benz Sprinter is being seen more and more on the roads and for very good reason – this cargo van can be used for a variety of industries, most notably construction and trades. Read about the benefits this van can bring for your business. And, one of our associate writers had the privilege of riding the Royal Enfield Bullet, a motorcycle whose name alone brings back amazing memories for thousands of South-Asians. As we push into August, and the half-way point of summer holidays for kids, make sure you spend time with your families. Our entire team wishes you, as always, safe driving and riding. Send us your feedback and we encourage you to visit our webpage, www.drkmag.com and like our Facebook page by searching for DRK – Desi Road Kings.

30% of China’s Gov’t Cars Run on “New Energy”

Buzz AU G U ST 2 014

Car-Tech Company Mobileye Soars on 1st Day of Public Trading

At least 30% of newly purchased government cars will be electric and other types of “new energy vehicles,” China’s official news agency reported Sunday, as the country attempts to tackle air pollution and encourage the electric car market. A joint plan from five government ministries and departments calls for about a third of cars bought for state use from 2014 to 2016 to rely on clean energy, and the percentage will be raised year by year after that, the Xinhua News Agency said. New energy vehicles include electric cars, plug-in hybrids, fuelcell and solar-powered cars.

Alcohol a Factor in Serious Motorcycle Crash in Burnaby A 23-year-old motorcyclist is in hospital with serious head and internal injuries after crashing his machine in Burnaby, and police suspect he’d been drinking. On July 18, shortly before 8pm, a motorist came upon the unconscious rider in the 3700 Block of Mary Avenue near Edmonds. He’d lost control of his Harley Davidson in an s-curve, and slammed into an embankment. Police are once again urging riders to be extra cautious, especially around corners.

Shares of Mobileye are soaring on the Israeli car technology company’s first day of public trading amid strong investor demand. Mobileye NV makes camera-based systems designed to help reduce the risk of accidents by anticipating collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians or bicycles. Its products also detect roadway markings and they can read traffic signs and lights, according to the company’s initial public offering prospectus. Its technology is already used, or will be added, in vehicles made by major automakers such as Ford and BMW. Mobileye had priced 36 million shares at $25 each, above an expected range of $21 to $23. The stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MBLY. On Friday, the stock jumped $13, or 52 per cent, to $38 in late morning trading.

Indian Launches New Indian Scout Indian Motorcycles launched the 2015 version of their iconic Scout at the Sturgis motorcycle rally. It’s the first, all-new Scout for over 70 years. The 1133cc, V-Twin weighs in at 253kg (wet) and according to Indian will provide a healthy 100bhp from the 60 degree, liquidcooled engine. Steve Menneto, VP of motorcycles for Polaris Industries said at the launch, “Over the course of 30 years of countless innovations, racing wins, world records and indus-

try firsts, the Scout has earned its reputation as a versatile, multifaceted bike that appeals to just about every rider and every riding style, with superior handling, balance, performance and craftsmanship,” “Our designers and engineers have taken that heritage and those characteristics and fused it into the 2015 Indian Scout, and we think just about everyone who rides this incredible bike is

going to feel like it was built just for them.” The bike will come in three colours; Thunder Black, Indian Motorcycle Red, Matte Silver Smoke and Matte Thunder Black Smoke. August 2014

All-new 2016 Mazda2 Unveiled

Production has commenced of the all-new, fourth-generation Mazda2 subcompact hatchback, which is being built at the company’s Hofu Plant No. 1 in Yamaguchi, Japan. The new car will hit the global markets starting this autumn, although won’t arrive in Canada until sometime next year as a 2016 model. The 2016 Mazda2 is the fourth model in the company’s portfolio to make full use of their SKYACTIV Technology along with their KODO design theme. While buyers in markets around the world will get the option to pick from a 1.5L clean diesel engine, a 1.3L and a 1.5L gasoline engine, Canada will only get the latter motor. Performance and economy specs have not been released on the new powertrain yet. Along with new technology under the hood, the 2016 Mazda2 will also offer much more technology in the cabin than it previously did, as the Mazda Connect system – which is available currently on the Mazda3 and Mazda6 – will also be offered in the new subcompact. Mazda Canada has not given us an exact sale date for the 2016 Mazda2, neither have they provided any pricing information. We will publish these details as soon as they are released.

Tesla to Launch Small $35,000 Car in 2017

Tesla Motors Inc. said on Wednesday it will name its planned small car, intended to move the electric car maker into a broader consumer segment, the Model 3. The vehicle will go on sale in 2017 and compete with BMW’s 3 Series sedans. The Model 3 will be priced starting at $35,000 (U.S.), or half the starting price of Tesla’s first mass-market car, the Model S sedan. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has said the new car will have a driving range of about 200 miles (321 km) on a full charge. Musk has also said the new vehicle will be about the same size as the BMW 3 Series. The smaller car is the third generation of Tesla vehicles, following the Roadster sports car which had limited production and two vehicles built on the same underpinning architecture: the Model S, introduced in mid-2012, and the Model X. The latter is expected to go on sale in 2015. The name of the new vehicle was initially reported by British publication Auto Express. A Tesla spokeswoman confirmed the vehicle’s name on Wednesday. It had previously been referred to as the “Gen III” car. Tesla’s focus “continues to be on Model S and preparing for the introduction of Model X,” the spokeswoman added Model X is a crossover vehicle built on the same architecture as the Model S. Musk said in May the company expects sales of the Model X to begin in the second quarter of next year. The Model S, which was launched in June 2012, has an Environmental Protection Agency-rated driving range of 208 miles with its smaller battery pack and 265 miles with the larger one. The smaller-battery model starts at about $70,000 and the larger-battery Model S starts at about $80,000. Many Model S cars sell for more with added options.

2016 Ford F-series Super Duty Burns During Testing Another month, another prototype fire. Following last month’s Acura NSX Nurburgring meltdown, a 2016 Ford Super Duty pickup was spied catching on fire and exploding in the desert by some eagle-eyed photographers. The fire reportedly started in the left front wheel well before engulfing the entire truck; the Super Duty was reportedly destroyed in about 20 minutes.

A Virtual Windshield Developed by Jaguar Courtesy: Charles Jolicoeur Land Rover

Head-up display thus takes on a whole new meaning with the virtual windshield developed by Jaguar Land Rover which transforms a vehicle into a learning tool for driving on a track. Just like a racing video game, the windshield displays the ideal trajectory for negotiating a winding road or track, in addition to displaying the lap times. Information relative to other drivers driving on the circuit are also displayed. The windshield can also

New Yamaha R1 on the Way Yamaha is just three months away from unveiling a completely new YZF-R1 superbike that it hopes will have the same class-defining impact the original 1998 model had when it was launched. The new bike retains the basic engine design of the current model, but it is understood to share almost nothing else with the current bike as it attempts to take on the likes of the BMW S1000RR and Aprilia RSV4 in terms of technology and performance. A new bike can’t come soon enough. The current R1 has barely been altered since it was introduced nearly six years ago as a 2009 model. The new bike will keep the inline-four engine design of the existing bike, with a cross-plane crank to replicate the firing intervals of a V4 and provide better power delivery.

display virtual cones to form a slalom. A “ghost car, a virtual car that appears on the screen and helps compare driver performance by representing the position of the vehicle at the last passage could also be presented on the virtual windshield. Although the main focus of this new technology is to help drivers hone their driving skills on the track, the virtual windshield could also theoretically help young drivers.

For example, the windshield is able to indicate the braking force required and when the brakes should be applied before reaching a given turn. Like the transparent hood developed by Land Rover, the virtual windshield is an embryonic technology. One should therefore not expect to see it on production models in the near future, but it remains unique and its applications are numerous.

hen the new Jaguar F-Type made its debut in 2013, it turned a lot of heads. Originally offered as a convertible only, Jaguar then unveiled the Coupe in the spring of 2014. I first saw the new feline up-close during the 2014 Vancouver Auto Show, and let me tell you, it was the highlight of the show. Just a few weeks ago, I was handed the keys to a brand new Polaris White F-Type S Coupe. It was going to be a great week.

2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe

a new retro modern cat Okay, for starters, let’s just get this out of the way – the F-Type Coupe is just plain sexy from any and every angle. Inspired by the iconic E-Type, this new cat boldly carries the Jaguar bloodline with class and elegance. The gently sloping, delicate roofline is distinctive from the roadster and, according to most who see the car, looks far more seductive and appealing. Chief designer Ian Callum said he wanted to keep a retro-inspired design, a smart move in my opinion. In essence, the roofline mixed with the rear hatch design is what sets this car apart from anything else. The rear wheel arches have a swollen look, a design element shared with the open-top version. Also at the rear is the carefully hidden, retractable “spoiler”, which deploys at speeds higher than 100 km/h. The rear also features LED taillights, while at the front of the car, Jaguar’s J-blade LED running lights 12

August 2014

are kept. The front of the F-Type cat has a wide mouth to allow in fresh cool air for the supercharged engine. Unlock the doors and the retractable door handles open, a theme common in many parts of the car. Inside the new coupe is familiar, yet slightly distinctive; for those with an eagle eye, you’ll notice clear similarities to the Range Rover Sport. Unlike some of the other Jaguar models, there is now an actual shifter, which I prefer, rather than the rotating knob. At the center of the dash sits an 8” full colour touch screen that houses all climate, audio, telephone, navigation, and vehicle settings. Yes, there are also buttons for quick settings, but the infotainment system can control everything, which it does quite well. Since there is only a fixed roof on the F-Type Coupe, choose the glass roof upgrade and let the natural light shine in, to showcase the beauty of the

2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe

interior. Seats provide great support and I would feel comfortable driving this cat for hours at a time, which is exactly what I did. There is just something about the sound of the F-Type S motor when it comes alive, like the intimidating roar of a waking lion. Pressing the start button also raises the retractable center vents; even though this feature isn’t overly practical, it’s pretty darn cool. The S upgrade package features an active exhaust, which provides an amazing growl, caused by the opening of the bypass valves, similar to that of a straight-pipe setup. So many times, I would downshift, using the paddle shifters, just to hear the pops and burbles from this European exhaust system. Power for the F-Type comes from a variety of engine setups. The base supercharged 3.0L V6 provides an impressive 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, sending the car from 0-60 mph in just 5.1

seconds. Next up, and my choice, is the V6 S, which features the same engine, but it’s been tuned to 380 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, giving a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds. If you want to replace your tires every year, then the obvious choice is the F-Type R; this supercharged V8 produces a whopping 550 hp and gets this beast to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds. Yes, the numbers are great, but how does the car drive? While driving, the first things that grabbed my attention were the responsiveness of the engine and the steering. Every time I put the pedal down, the car would lunge forward and the exhaust sound became music to my ears. Jaguar also has its Dynamic Driving mode and when activated, it changes the gear ratios to give an even more impressive driving sensation. Dynamic mode also causes the instrument panels to glow bright red, letting you know that the beast is ready for action. The F-Types keep the hydraulic steering when others have moved to electric steering, and let me tell you, I’m glad they did. There is great feedback from the steering system, making the driver feel completely connected with the car and road. The 8-speed ZF transmission is an absolute gem, shifting seamlessly and without any hiccups. It delivers control, accuracy and the punch of a dual-clutch transmission with the smoothness of a traditional shifter. I found the F-Type to be quite easy to drive in the city, but amazing to drive on the open roads, especially the Sea-to-Sky highway. Cornering was amazing, with the 19” tire and wheel package keeping me firmly planted at all times. I was lucky that during my time with the car, weather was just about perfect; it didn’t, however, allow me to test the traction and limited slip differential systems. The F-Type’s Sport suspension and Adaptive Dynamics gave a pretty smooth ride, considering how low the car is. For a car that gets up to speed pretty fast, it’s important that it stops just as fast and Jaguar’s High Performance Braking System did not disappoint. Without any hesitation, I can honestly say that this is one of the best and most enjoyable coupes I’ve driven. What made this driving experience even better was the looks and comments that the car received whenever and wherever I stopped. There was not a single day where someone did not stop to admire or take pictures of the car. Some people even compared the styling to the Aston Martin Vantage – now that’s quite a compliment. Kudos to Tata and their stewardship for making this Jaguar thrive in today’s market. For a sticker price of $84,900 for the F-Type S, one would be hard pressed to find anything else that comes close. In your corner

by professionals

DRK Magazine is pleased to announce the launch of a new column, called “In Your Corner.” This new column will focus on current and relevant issues, which will be written and/ or advised by professionals in the industry. In this inaugural column, we had a chance to sit with Barinder Sanghera, a professional lawyer, and discuss questions that deal with Motor Vehicle Accidents and related insurance claims. Barinder has been practicing law for over 16 years, with personal injury (including ICBC) and immigration as his areas of expertise. He is one of the founding partners of Sanghera Sandhar Law Group, located in Surrey, BC. Sanghera Sandhar Law Firm has built a solid reputation within the Lower Mainland for providing their clients with information and services built on principles and ethics. DRK: Barinder, first of all, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with us. BSS: It’s my pleasure. As a professional lawyer, it’s important that I send accurate information to your readers. DRK: What is the adjuster’s job at ICBC? BSS: An adjuster’s job is to take, record, investigate, assess, and finally, close an accident or injury claim. DRK: With so many lawyers specializing in ICBC cases, how does a client choose the right one? BSS: A good lawyer is one who listens to you and understands the extent of damage to you and your lifestyle. He is willing to spend the time and

money to properly prepare your claim so you receive fair compensation for your losses. DRK: Does hiring a private lawyer reduce a client’s credibility with ICBC? BSS: No. ICBC adjusters have their job to do. They will record everything and use it when it’s needed, whether it’s detrimental to you or not, or to discredit you or the claim later. A private lawyer is a buffer between you and ICBC. Most people find it’s easier to deal with a lawyer than with ICBC. A good lawyer has all the right tools to enhance your claim and do what is in your benefit. DRK: After an accident, when is the best or right time to hire a lawyer? BSS: It’s best to consult with a lawyer as soon as possible because you will get the best advice to help you make the best decision. Remember though, you must file a claim before the 2-year accident anniversary. DRK: What if a client is unhappy with his current lawyer? Can he change to another one and how will this affect the fee structure? BSS: That’s an excellent question. I would first advise you to discuss any concerns you have with your lawyer and give the lawyer a chance to understand and address them. If that fails, the new lawyer can contact the old lawyer and they can make an agreement on disbursements and fee structure. DRK: What are the normal charges/fees for a lawyer handling a claim? BSS: The maximum a lawyer can charge is 33.3% for any total fee and most firms charge an average from 25 – 33%. Our firm charges a very competitive rate that our clients are very happy with.

DRK: What if a client, because of an accident, has immediate expenses that he or she can’t pay? BSS: You will be reimbursed for out-ofpocket expenses if they are related to an accident. Just submits your receipts to your lawyer. Also, most treatment providers, such as physiotherapists, have directions on collecting payments. For example, they may not charge for treatment, but will settle at the end of the claim. DRK: ICBC has a huge campaign that, “You don’t have to settle until you’re ready.” Is this accurate? BSS: Remember that insurance companies take premiums and pay claims, so they will take your money easily, but are less likely to pay out. There’s an incentive to keep claim payments down – it’s business because they want to reduce their expenses. Find out for yourself how ICBC and other insurers work and pay attention to the facts. DRK: What is the best advice you can give to a person who has just been in an accident? BSS: First of all, see the doctor immediately and regularly, until you feel better. Your health is important and a doctor can best help you get better. Also, keep track of wage loss and out-of-pocket expenses. DRK: Well, that’s a lot of information. Thanks again Barinder for taking the time to sit and chat. BSS: Not a problem. Hopefully I’ve helped answer some important questions that people may have about ICBC claims. If your readers have any other questions, they can speak with me directly.

Not Your Father’s Bullet 2014

Royal Enfield Bullet Classic C5

I

t doesn’t take much time to realize the all new Bullet Classic C5 is one of those bikes that draws a lot of attention and is a lot of fun to ride. We hopped onto the saddle of this half-liter Bullet to bring you this first impression. It’s striking two-tone style, body-colored frame, rubber knee pads, and solo-spring seating pops with vintage authenticity. This is not your father’s Bullet. The fully-integrated unit construction engine offers unprecedented fuel economy, higher cruising speeds, and the latest emissions standards. A simple push on the e-button and the Bullet comes to life. The standard one down, four-up shift pattern works effortlessly and the clutch lever pull is fairly easy. While shifting through the gears, you’ll notice the Bullet has quite a bit of torque and pulls very strong in the third and fourth gears. Fifth gear comfortably topped out at about 95 km/h, urging me to continually search for a sneaky sixth gear, which of course, isn’t there. I found aggressive downshifting would occasionally locate a false neutral between the fifth and fourth gears, but that is easily eliminated with a bit of patience; also, it’s better not to rely on the downshifting for braking until you’ve backed the speed down a fuzz. The low center of gravity makes it easy to balance and the Bullet in turns while providing exceptional stability at any speed. You instantly see why it was once a popular choice as a cruiser. The brakes do a fine job of slowing - especially the front disc. The rear drum brake feels a bit mushy, as most drum brakes do compared to a disc. The rear brake pedal is fairly large - a bit funky looking just as they were in the ‘50s - so you don’t have any problem locating it with your foot. The front forks sport about four inches of travel and the rear shocks provide a bit less; but when you include the springs 18

First Look

under the seat, they add up to a comfortable ride. As I said earlier, this bike is a lot of fun to ride and sounds great. Mostly, I enjoyed the engine note of the classic single-cylinder thumper as we chugged along at top speed; this engine noise evoked a lot of emotions about my days in India, cruising on my older 350cc Bullet. As a cross-town commuter, the Bullet is the perfect companion, especially if you enjoy strangers coming up and asking questions. I wouldn’t even hesitate showing up a pair of dual-sport tires and taking the Bullet Classic fire-roading. Starting at $5,499, with a claimed 36 km/L fuel economy, along with a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty, the Royal Enfield provides a rather economical and sensible alternative for vintage enthusiasts.

How to Protect Your Car from the Summer Heat During the hot summer months, your car spends most of the day parked out in direct sunlight, roasting on hot pavement. In the same way you need protection from the heat and UV rays, your vehicle also needs to be cared for. Here’s a list of areas you should check to make sure your car keeps its cool this summer:

1. Check the coolant The hot temperatures force your vehicle to work hard and coolant helps prevent overheating. Your owner’s manual will detail how frequently you should flush your coolant system and replace the fluids. 2. Top up fluids Pop-up the hood and review the fluid levels of your motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and your brake fluid. Refill as needed. 3. Look at the battery The heat can cause battery fluid to evaporate at a higher rate and this can lead to corrosion on the terminals and connections. If you see this build-up, clean it away from the battery terminals and cable clamps to allow the clamps a tight fit. 4. Blast the A/C Crank up the air conditioning in your car to ensure that it reaches the maximum temperature and each vent has proper air flow. If it’s not maintaining the right temperature, your refrigerant levels could be low. Having proper air conditioning doesn’t 20

August 2014

just provide you with an escape from the heat – cool air can also reduce driver fatigue, thereby increasing driving safety. 5. Inspect your belts Take a look at your hoses and drive belts to see how worn they are. You’ll want to keep an eye out for cracking, soft spots or any other signs of wear and tear as worn parts are more likely to fail in hot driving conditions. 6. Properly inflate your tires Temperature changes can affect the air levels in your tires. If you combine an overinflated or underinflated tire with hot pavement and brake friction, you could be steering towards a tire blowout. Review your owner’s manual to find the proper inflation level and check your tires once a month (even your spare) to make sure they are within these guidelines. Don’t forget to review the treads for any cracks, bulges or signs of uneven wear. 7. Test your wipers Your windshield wipers face the toughest of road conditions – they chip through

ice and snow in the winter and they sit on a blistering windshield in the summer. The harsh elements can cause them to crack, lose flexibility and become misshaped. Determine whether it’s time to replace them – you’ll want a great working set when you’re stuck in a summer thunderstorm. 8. Update your emergency kit Have a look through your vehicle’s emergency kit. Are there any items that have expired or do you need to replace any items you’ve used? You might consider adding some new items suitable for summer like emergency sunscreen or a rain poncho. 9. Give it a good clean Tree sap, bird droppings, bugs, acid rain and road dust can accumulate on your car over the summer months and potentially damage the paint. Wash your car frequently and wax or polish periodically to provide a little extra protection. By doing a little routine maintenance ahead of time, you can help ensure that your car will be in great shape for summer day trips, vacations and more.

nitially launched in 1961, this sports car became Jaguar’s most iconic car. Jaguar described it as being “developed from the famous “C” and “D” Type Sports-Racing cars” because it had a monocoque chassis similar to the D-Type. They called it “an entirely new concept of high speed motoring.” The result was a 150 mph cruiser that had companies like Ferrari scrambling to make sure there next generation supercar could match the E. The first E-Type to be shown in public was driven to the Geneva Motor Show and introduced to the world, where Enzo Ferrari called it, “The most beautiful car ever made.” The E-Type was the product of five years of development and borrowed much from the preceding race cars coming from Coventry. In fact, the Competition Department in 1956 became the Prototype Shop to specifically develop the D-Type as a road car. In it, Malcom Sayer and Bob Knight created the shape for E1A, the very first E-Type prototype. Because saloon production was Jaguar’s primary concern, only a small team was devoted to EType development. Test driver Norman Dewis worked primary with Bob Knight while Bill Heynes oversaw the entire project for Sir William Lyons. From the first aluminum prototypes, Cyril Crouch had to design the E-Type from the bottom-up in steel. The process took an exceptionally long time to sort out, especially the new independent rear suspension. Bob Knight developed the new system which used a lower wishbones and half-shafts. Attached to the body by a sub-frame, the suspension was completely contained with the onboard brakes, twin spring/damper units and all the pickup points. Like the D-Type, the E used a front sub-frame that attached to front bulkhead of the monocoque body. It supported the 3.8-litre engine first developed for the large Mark IX saloon. Production began in March of 1961. In 1964 Jaguar updated the engine to 4.2 liters which had noticeably more torque but retained the 150 mph top speed. With its all synchomesh gearbox, improved brake servo, clutch and electrical cooling system, the 4.2 became the preferred driver’s car. Additional refinements included better seats, revised dashboard, armrests and a storage compartment on the transmission tunnel. The Jaguar E-Type is one of the most sought-after classic cars in the world and we agree. If Enzo Ferrari thinks it’s the most beautiful car in the world, who are we to disagree.

2014 Ducati Monster 696 First launched in 1992, the Ducati Monster has become an icon because of its minimalist stature, yet dramatic style. The ‘less-ismore’ philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati’s never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles. For 2014, every single component has been redesigned and redeveloped so now more than ever, form follows function. The 696 is an L-twin that produces 80 hp and about 50.6 lb-ft of torque. The 6-speed gearbox performs amazing due to the APTC wet multiplate with hydraulic control clutch. Driving the Monster is a unique experience in that seating position is slightly forward and aggressive, yet comfortable for daily commuting and longer trips. This is a bike that likes to be thrown into corners rather than long straight drives. If you want a more personalized Monster, then get the 696+, which features neat design touches. The 2014 Ducati Monster starts at $9,995.

2015 Dodge Charger The Dodge Charger has been one of the most favourite American muscle cars since its inception in 1964. The 2015, the eighth generation, is receiving some very tasteful modifications as compared to outgoing model. Most noticeable are the new front grille, LED lighting, and the rounded Coke-styled headlights; Dodge has said that in addition to the obvious changes, almost every panel has also been reworked. The new Charger is getting its inspiration from the 1969 model, one of the best looking cars every made. Under the hood, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine delivers 292 hp and an impressive 44 highway mpg. For BC weather, get the optional all-wheel drive package and you’ve got a great family sports car for the whole year. Personally, my package of choice would be the 6.4 SRT HEMI V8 because well, why not? The 2015 Charger starts at $29,995.

2014 GMC Sierra

It’s no secret what you need from a pickup – strength, power, hauling capacity, a smooth ride, and of course, reliability. GMC has over 100 years of truck-building experience and the 2014 Sierra is another example of great craftsmanship and engineering – no wonder it won the 2014 AJAC Award for Best New Pickup. The Sierra is one of the most comfortable trucks I’ve ever driven and for 2014, there are huge improvements in noise reduction, vibrations, wind noise, and exhaust and engine noise. The result: a truck that can do all the work you need, but still make you ride in a lap of luxury, especially when you add the comfort and convenience packages. Power comes from the 4.3L EcoTec3 engine, which produces 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque. As a work truck, the Sierra has some neat features, such as the integrated rear bumper CornerSteps, moveable upper tie-down hooks, and available LED box lighting. The 2014 Sierra starts at $27,155. 26

he construction and trade industries have shown tremendous growth in the past years, and now more than ever, tradespeople are relying on “true” cargo vans for their purposes. The new 2014 Mercedes Sprinter is a vehicle that can be customized for a variety of purposes, including construction trades, delivery services, goods transport, and passenger transport. My test vehicle, the 2500 High Roof 170” WB crew setup, was supplied by Mercedes-Benz Langley, part of the Dilawri Auto Group. I was expecting the Sprinter to be a big vehicle, and it is exactly that – a very large cargo van. The styling of the ve-

For 2014, there are tasteful changes to the front grill, headlights and front fascia as compared to previous year’s models. Sprinter’s rectangular structure serves to maximize load capacity, and take it from me, you can put a lot of cargo in this vehicle. Buyers can mix and match between two wheelbases, two heights, three overall lengths and three levels of gross vehicle weight ratings – and that’s only for configurations on the outside. On the inside, Mercedes Langley has assured me that, with 3rd party vendors, the Sprinter can be con

2014 Mercedes Sprinter

figured for almost any application. With a plethora of modifications available, it’s no wonder why we’re seeing more and more of these vehicles on the roads. In fact, even the Vancouver Police department recently added a fleet of the Sprinters to their task force. Power for the Sprinter comes from a standard 2.1L 4-cylinder 2-stage turbo-diesel engine, which produces 161 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Yes, there is a V6 available, but honestly, with such numbers, would you really need the upgrade? Combine this with a 24,000 km service interval, and there really is no need in getting the 6-cylinder, unless you’re going to be doing a lot of towing. The engine is matched with a new 7-speed automatic transmission (manual is not available), so there are plenty of cogs for city and highway driving. Even though it is a large vehicle, driving the Sprinter is not difficult. Once I got used to the tall height and long wheelbase, the Benz became quite easy to maneuver. Of course, it’s not a Micra or Civic, so be careful when turning and parking. The Sprinter has an excellent standard stability control system, making it unwavering in corners. The indirect steering also helps avoid potential cornering mishaps. If the van is completely empty, there is some bumpiness at the rear end; this gets fixed easily when carrying a load of cargo. Ride height is tall and outward visibility is excellent; honestly, with a sight line of about 7 feet above the ground, you can see just about everything in front of you. If you’ve been driving a cube van or a regular van or truck, getting used to the forward and tall seat position might take a little getting used to. With the Sprinter being such a large vehicle, rear visibility is, however, compromised; yes, the side mirrors are great, but for this vehicle, a back-up 30

camera should be standard equipment, and not an option. That being said, the Sprinter can be loaded with tonnes of tech-options, such as lane departure warning, hands free Bluetooth, emergency braking and collision prevention, blind spot assistance, high beam assist, and various seating packages, just to name a few. The front cab, like the rest of the Sprinter, is a tradesperson’s, or hoarder’s, dream, with tonnes of additional storage. There are more cubby holes, nooks, and crannies than an elementary classroom. Most all of the buttons are also glove-friendly. Mercedes definitely spent a great deal of time and research in making sure the cab was not only welldesigned, but very functional. In fact, when a couple of tradespeople (electricians, actually) took a look inside, they were impressed by the cab’s layout. These electricians were equally impressed with the cargo area, and when I showed them pictures of the Sprinter cargo modifications, I think they were tempted to purchase one. The rear doors open completely and can be hinged to the sides of the vehicle. In addition, the passenger side sliding door has an amazing 182” door opening height. There is no issue of getting any cargo into and out of the Sprinter. The 2014 Mercedes is one of the few cargo vehicles that can be modified for a number of diverse applications. Although the trade and cargo transport industries are the main uses, the Sprinter is also now commonly being used as a limousine and a camper, and let me tell you, the camper setup is quite nice. The Sprinter is a very practical and functional vehicle and being a Mercedes Benz, you know you are getting top-notch quality and workmanship. The 2014 Sprinter starts at $39, 900, and with some cash incentives, the price can still drop by a few thousand dollars.

DRK Technology & Innovations

The Future is Now! With technology advancing at such a fast pace, it’s no wonder that automobiles of today include systems that were unheard of just a few years ago. Today’s automobiles are innovative, safer, and put driver and passenger safety at the forefront. Here are some of the newest automotive innovations that will slowly become, or are, standard on all vehicles.

Automatic Braking (Honda Collision Mitigation) Honda’s new Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS) uses a radar to autonomously apply emergency brakes. When the car is at speeds above 15 km/h, the system will detect moving and stationary vehicles along the path up to 100 m ahead. When the system detects that the car has a likely chance to hit one of these detected obstacles, the 3 stage process of collision avoidance is initiated. First, the driver is notified via visual and audible warnings. Second, if after the warnings the collision is still detected, (approximately 2 seconds before impact), the seatbelt receives 3 sharp tugs, and the car automatically starts to apply pressure on the breaks. Thirdly, if even after steps 1 and 2 the collision is unavoidable, the front occupant seatbelts are fully tightened, and a high level of braking is applied automatically by the vehicle’s computer system.

Mercedes Night View Assist Using two infrared head lamps and a thermal imaging camera, Mercedes Night View Assist helps drivers throughout the dark hours of the night for a safer drive. The infrared lamps invisibly reach out much farther as compared to regular lamps, and improve visibility 32

without blinding oncoming traffic. When the lamps detect an obstacle in the path of the moving car, the system will alert the driver with a grayscale image shown on the instrument cluster screen, which clearly outlines the oncoming danger. If the system detects that there is a pedestrian on the road in front of the vehicle, a short pulsing of the headlamps starts to warn the pedestrian of the oncoming danger. Audi Lane Assist Using a camera located on the interior mirror of an Audi Vehicle, the system will identify the lane markings on the road and calculate where the vehicle will be in the lane for the next few seconds. If the system detects that the vehicle will be drifting out of the lane, it will gently adjust the steering so that the car remains in the center of the lane. The system does not interfere with regular driving habits, such as lane changes and driving styles, and only activates when necessary. While this system is built to aid drivers, it is still the responsibility of the driver to remain in their lane as if the system detects that you remove your hands from the steering wheel, the system will turn off.

Ford Blind Spot Information System Using radar technology, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) will detect vehicles in the blind spots of drivers. As soon as traffic moves into the blind spot and is detected, an LED on the side view mirror will be turned on to notify the driver. This system allows easier lane changes and overtaking as blind spots are always the most dangerous factor when doing either of these maneuvers. Mercedes Intelligent Drive 2014 Mercedes Intelligent Driver uses a plethora of systems that enhance the comfort and safety of the driver. Distronic Plus with Steering Assist helps drivers stay in the middle of their lane while keeping a safe distance from vehicles ahead of them, all done autonomously. BAS+ with Cross Traffic Assist is capable of detecting traffic and obstacles in front of the car and can apply the brakes in dangerous situations. Magic Body Control is a system that scans the road ahead for bumps in the road and can adjust the individual wheel spring strut forces so that the car continues to receive an extremely smooth ride. A combinations of these systems allows the driver to not only be more comfortable while driving, but also safer.

Why Buy From a Dealer? fIlr qoN ikauN kwr KrIdo? - Jasleen Dutt

I

n our last issue of DRK Magazine, one of our associate writers highlighted the advantages of buying and selling a vehicle privately. To be impartial, and since I’ve purchased almost all of my vehicles from dealers, it would only be fair to highlight the benefits of buying from a reputable dealer. Buying a vehicle is the second largest purchase in most peoples’ lives, next to buying a house, so it’s important that you get the car you want while at the same time, protect yourself and your money. In local newspapers, automotive magazines, and private postings, there are literally thousands of vehicles for sale. Are these cars a safe bet? Well, let’s find out. I had the chance to speak with John Bond, General Manager at Pinnacle Auto Sales in Surrey, about the benefits of buying from a dealer. “When buying from a private seller, there is no guarantee that the vehicle will last,” says Bond. “Even though some private sellers are very transparent about the vehicle’s history and condition, most are not, and it’s these people you need to be aware of.” Bond goes ton to say that the ones you really need to be aware of are curbers: “A curber is an individual that poses as a private vehicle seller, but he makes his money through dishonesty about himself and the vehicle being sold.” What’s more is that a curber looks just like your neighbour, but will steal your money and leave you with a real sour lemon. Recently, there has been a joint effort between CarProof, ICBC, and the Vehicle Sales Authority of BC to increase consumer knowledge, help buyers avoid curbers, and purchase a reliable vehicle from dealers. An important advantage of buying from a dealer is warranty. Most dealers will offer some sort of warranty, and even more will offer 3rd party extended warranties. With a private seller, the motor vehicle is sold “as-is” and there is no safety net. From personal experience, my uncle had bought a car from a private seller, and with34

August 2014

in about two weeks, the transmission was gone, leaving him stuck with a $2500 repair bill. Bond says, “If there is an issue with a vehicle we sell, we will stand behind it and make sure to sort out any problems.” With the VSA as a regulating body, dealerships today must comply with industry sales regulation. One of the biggest reasons people buy private is to save that horrendous sales tax. But according to Brian Jessel BMW Gold Sales Master Valentino Almeida, “Most people forget that if you buy privately, you lose the 12% tradein tax savings. If you have a vehicle to trade in, the tax savings are really beneficial for the buyer.” It’s true – with a private sale, you cannot trade in your older vehicle and you still have to pay a sales tax. Another reason most buyers forget about is financing. Based on sheer volume, most dealerships are able to give better financing rates than a bank. “Our financing rates for new or used cars are generally less than what you can expect from your bank,” says Moe Khan, Sales Manager at Open Road Honda. “We can offer very competitive rates for financing if you can’t pay off the vehicle in cash; for this reason, many buyers get financing from us.” Finally, the reason I purchase my vehicles from a dealership is overall piece of mind, which includes everything above. Dealers don’t just want you as a customer, but want you as a customer for life, and thus, are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. In fact, if there are minor deficiencies that arise within a short time of your purchase, most dealerships will take care of them at no, or minimal, cost. That’s why dealerships today are not the same as they were 25 years ago. Also, with the VSA now able to assign some hefty fines to dealerships that don’t comply with regulations, you are pretty safe. In the end, it’s always caveat emptor (Let the buyer beware); however, after doing your due diligence, you’ll find that purchasing a car from a reputable dealership is probably the best option for most buyers.

Automatic Parking Assist Standard on Every SS The SS Sedan is Chevrolet’s first and only vehicle to offer standard Automatic Parking Assist. The technology uses sensors on the front and rear bumpers to detect the width and depth of parallel and reverse right-angle parking spaces to provide hands-free parking help. “Even some of the most experienced drivers in the world loathe parallel parking,” said Scott Hollopeter, vehicle dynamics engineer for the SS. “Automatic Parking Assist is designed to help alleviate that anxiety in situations where more experience is required to park a vehicle.” The system can detect obstacles, gauge the size of a parking space, assess distance to the curb and calculate optimum steering angles for each parking space. The driver, following instructions on the Driver Information Center, controls the accelerator and brake while the Automatic Parking Assist controls the steering. Signals sent from the sensors in the bumpers to the electric power steering rack allow the vehicle to steer itself into the space.

“Technologies that provide help in parking and even vehicles that can park themselves started, as most technologies do, on luxury cars but they have proliferated to more mainstream vehicles,” said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst for AutoTrader.com. “They have broad appeal from newly licensed young drivers to older drivers and are also are attractive to people who live in increasingly congested urban areas.” For parallel parking, the driver pulls alongside a parking space until the vehicle’s rear bumper passes the rear wheel of the car parked in front of the open space. The driver then shifts into reverse and the car steers itself into the space. The backup camera provides a visual indication of how close the SS is to surrounding cars. The reverse perpendicular parking process works in a similar way. The driver

presses the Automatic Park Assist button twice and follows instructions in the Driver Information Center to safely park the vehicle.

S

o you bought your vehicle, new or used, and it’s pretty nice – great paint job, clean, and inside is spotless. But, it still doesn’t look exactly like you would like it to; this is where modifications come into play. Drivers have been

modifying their cars for years and years, some extensive while others just subtle. Sometimes, these changes are barely noticeable while other times they radically reface the car. Since I own a BMW 5-series, I spoke

with Charles Carvalho, Director of Fixed Operations at Brian Jessel BMW, about aftermarket products for vehicles. He said that his department gets many many inquiries for aftermarket products for vehicles their dealership sells.

AFTERMARKET ADD-ON’S - With expert advice from Charles Carvalho, Director of Fixed Operations at Brian Jessel BMW LED lighting – You can change the appearance of the inside of your vehicle by simply replacing your regular bulbs with LED’s. The LED’s are cooler, require less energy, will last longer, and make the interior look nice.

Cold-air intake – This bolt-on modification allows more, and cooler, oxygenated air into your engine. Simply put, if your engine breathes better, it will perform better. Most cold-air intakes also add some extra horses.

Front air dam – A front air dam adds a very aggressive and unique look to your vehicle. It comes in carbon fiber or can be custom painted to match the colour of your car.

38

August 2014

HID lights – If your vehicle has regular halogen bulbs, spend the extra money and get HID’s. Not only will they draw less energy and last longer, they give much better light for night-time driving. If you have the money, get projector style headlamps as well.

DRK News / Views / Stuff

“There are many ways to make a vehicle more personalized for your tastes or needs,” says Carvalho. He adds a bit of caution, however: “I would like to point out that we do not encourage upgrades that will void the warranty of your car.

Always consult the dealer of your make to see if a potential upgrade will void warranty.” Great advice. After speaking with Charles, I came up with a list of top upgrades for a vehicle to give it better performance and look.

- Jag Dhatt Window tint – Not just for looks, window tint reduces the amount of sun and heat in your car. Nowadays, you can get factory tint on most makes and models. However, if your vehicle doesn’t have it, window tint is highly recommended. Remember though, the windshield and front windows CANNOT be tinted.

Lip spoiler – This is a ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’ one. A clean, low profile spoiler looks great on most vehicles. Street cars don’t really need a spoiler because we’re not driving fast enough for the need of a downforce. Again, it’s personal taste on this one.

Fancy wheels – Aftermarket, or Aftersales, wheels add great look and curb appeal to your vehicle. This is probably the most common upgrade done to motor vehicles. With so many choices in style and size, you can customize your car to suit your taste, and improve handling.

Performance exhaust – A performance exhaust is designed and engineered to allow for better airflow of gases out of the engine. Compared to a stock exhaust, you’ll get better power and slightly better fuel economy. And you will get a better sounding car.

Dangerous Gases in Garage

Dangerous Gases in the Garage grwj dIAW ^qrnwk gYsW By: Pahul Dhillon

H

ow many times do you start your automobile or motorcycle while it’s still parked in the garage? I know I’ve been guilty of this practice on occasion, even though I know I shouldn’t. Vehicle emissions consist of several major gases, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, water vapour, and carbon monoxide. Due to these gases, starting up your vehicle in an enclosed space can be dangerous. In enclosed spaces, like a garage, these gases can build up to dangerous levels and all but one of them (water vapour) can cause serious problems. All of these gases, in addition, contribute to the greenhouse effect, trapping the sun’s light and reflecting it back towards earth. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most common by-products generated by a motor vehicle’s engine and accounts for 82% of total CO2 emissions in the US. Since the late half of the 20th century, concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased from 280ppm to ~370ppm. While CO2 is an important gas produced by the body and is widely used in the food and chemical industries, at higher concentrations, it exerts a toxic effect at the cellular level. Concentrations above 10% may cause convulsions, coma, and death. Large amounts of CO2 are produced via a combustion engine and because of this, are very dangerous in confined areas. 40

Dangerous Gases in Garage

Nitrous oxide (NO2) accounts for 6% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the USA, but it has a significantly larger impact on the environment. The warming effect that 1 pound of NO2 has on the atmosphere is over 300 times greater than 1 pound of CO2. NO2 ¬¬can irritate the lungs and lower resistance to respiratory infections. As well, it can affect DNA production and the immune, neurological, and reproductive systems. These effects can occur from both short term and long term exposure to the gas. Carbon monoxide has a relatively small effect on the environment, unlike other emissions; however, it has significant health risks. Carbon monoxide reduces the delivery of oxygen throughout the body and elevated levels can cause visual impairment, reduced dexterity, difficulty performing complex tasks, and poor learning ability. As carbon monoxide builds up in your blood, it replaces the oxygen that is normally carried and can cause drowsiness, seizures and death. It is carbon monoxide that is called the silent killer because you can’t see it or smell it. When we think of either cooling our vehicles in the summer or warming them in the winter, never start a car in any enclosed space unless you plan on moving it right away and there is proper ventilation.

Did You Know 80% of Your Vehicle is Recyclable? By - Kim Clarke It’s True, 80% of your vehicle is recyclable? Increasing awareness of environmental issues and limitation concerns for our natural resources have placed greater importance on the need for everyone to keep our globe green. By recycling your endof-life (elv) vehicle you will help the environment, positively impact the economy, support local green business and help local charities should you choose to retire your car with Car Heaven. Vehicles are the largest, most recyclable product from

consumers and are a primary source of steel, 14 million tons per year. Recycling metal uses about 74% less energy and 40% less water consumption than producing new steel. Today’s manufactured metal products contain anywhere from 25% to 100% recycled steel. What is involved in responsible car recycling? The first step is the removal of all operating fluids and other potential contaminants. Fluids include engine oil, transmission oil, steering gear oil, coolant, and fuel. On average the volume of fluids in a vehicle is around 19 litres. Next is the oil filter, gas tank, and battery followed by the tires which are not biodegradable. Auto glass is the last item removed from the vehicle.

The automotive recycler will determine how best to recycle, reuse or dispose of these materials. Good quality tires and batteries can be resold. Poor quality tires can be recycled and/or repurposed. Tire Stewardship BC is a not-for-profit society formed to manage BC’s tire recycling program. All the recycling takes place right here in BC. Two companies both located in Delta that have been program participants since 1991: Western Rubber Products recycles the majority of the tires into crumb rubber used to make flooring products for agricultural, recreational and industrial use, and as an additive for rubberized asphalt and for synthetic turf fields. Lehigh Northwest Cement uses tires as a fuel supplement, replacing fossil fuel alternatives. What else is recyclable, can we crush the car yet? Almost. If the vehicle was manufactured before 2003 the convenience switches found in hood and trunk lights and in anti-lock brake systems (ABS) must be removed. These switch assemblies contain mercury. When the hood or trunk reaches a certain angle, mercury in the switch makes contact with the electrical points, creating a circuit and turning on the light. Automotive Recyclers of Canada report, “There’s enough mercury in this one little switch to contaminate a 20 acre lake!” A detailed listing of automobiles equipped with these mercury switches can be found at Switch Out, a national program designed to remove, collect and manage mercurycontaining convenience lighting switches and anti-lock braking system (ABS) sensor modules. One more pre-crusher step, reusable parts recovery. Depending on the condition and value, parts and components are removed from the vehicle for reconditioning and sale often by auto part recyclers. These parts include whole engines, transmissions, body panels, interiors, wheels, steering wheels to name a few. More info at greenrecycledparts.ca Now the vehicle is ready for flattening to reduce its volume and then onto the shredder. Shredders use a series of huge, rapidly-spinning hammers to tear the vehicle into fist sized chunks. What comes out is “high-density uniform fragmentized scrap”. Large powerful magnets separate the steel and iron from the plastics, rubber, carpet and glass. This is then sent to mills and end markets for production.

Why Women Like to Ride as Harley Davidson Motorcycle Passengers Motorcycle enthusiasts should be very familiar with Harley-Davidson (abbreviated as Harley, or H-D), the famous American mo-

torcycle brand. However, not many would know the fact that women are more of Harley fans than men. In a recent survey, it was discovered that women riders are much more attracted to Harley motorcycles than men on

average. Around 3,000 people, including approximately 1,900 men and 1,100 women, took the survey. When asked, “Is Harley your favorite motorcycle brand”, the percentage of female members who said yes (31%) was much higher than male members (19%). Why? A few main reasons emerged. The most common answer to the question is that Harley motorcycles are always gorgeous and expensive, so it’s awesome to be on one. The fact that women like beauty once again applies here. “I love it when I am on a Harley. It gives you all the attention you want.” Sarah, a biking enthusiast, expressed her own opinion: “But it’s not about being pretentious or anything, or like I’m doing it

out of vanity. I just love it deep down and it makes me feel good.” Another reason women like Harley is be-

cause it’s not only about riding. It is a lifestyle. Harley has long been associated with the sub-cultures of the biker and motorcycle clubs “It is about a life that only bikers would understand.”

Harley-Davidson Recalls Motorcycles Ignition switch problems that have plagued General Motors and Chrysler have now turned up in the motorcycle business. Harley-Davidson is recalling more than 4,500 FXDL Dyna Low Rider bikes worldwide because engine vibration can turn the switches from “on” to “accessory.”

The recall covers motorcycles from the 2014½ model year. If the motorcycles have been modified to rev higher than 5,600 RPMs, an engine mount bracket can vibrate excessively, causing the problem. If the switch goes to “accessory,” the engine

can shut off while being driven and potentially cause a crash. The company said there have been no crashes or injuries reported from the problem. Dealers will replace the bracket assembly and ignition switch knob for free. Harley began notifying owners in late July. Harley said in documents posted Friday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the motorcycles are limited at the factory to 5,600 RPMs, but Harley offers performance calibrations that let the engine rev higher than the limit. If the bikes hit 5,800 RPMs, the top engine mount bracket can vibrate too much and cause the ignition switches to malfunction. The company said it began looking into the problem after its service department discovered that an ignition switch slipped out of the “on” position in testing. Harley found four warranty claims and complaints about the problem, all in bikes with non-Harley exhaust systems. The Milwaukee company’s recall comes after General Motors recalled 17.3 million ve-

hicles to fix problems with ignition switches that can cause engine stalling. Chrysler has recalled another 1.7 million for the same problem. So far this year the auto industry has recalled more than 40 million vehicles, passing the old full-year record of 30.8 million set in 2004. Federal safety regulators in June began a broad investigation of ignition-switch and airbag problems across the auto industry. That investigation is still open, although the agency wouldn’t say if more automakers could be affected. Harley said it issued the recall independently, and it has nothing to do with ignition switch problems in the auto industry or the NHTSA investigation. The investigation and recalls come after GM bungled an ignition-switch recall of older small cars. GM acknowledged that it knew of the ignition problem for more than a decade but failed to recall the cars until earlier this year, when it recalled 2.6 million small cars such as the Chevrolet Cobalt. Subsequent safety reviews caused GM to recall millions more vehicles for faulty switches. August 2014
