DRK Editorial

Editor’s Note

Jag Dhatt Editor-in-Chief

It always amazes me how quickly technology changes, in all aspects of life. Personally, I’ve seen the change from black and white TVs to Ultra HD screens, rotary phones to computer-like smart phones, and even bulbs and cameras you can control from half-way around the world. The same is happening in vehicles – technologies we only dreamed of are now realities, and there’s more to come. Take for example, self-parking and driving vehicles. So many vehicles can now self-park; simply push a button, sit back and watch the car or truck park itself. And with Auto-pilot assisted technologies, it’s not far away that cars will self-drive to any destination. Impressive stuff; however, in my opinion, I would always want to have complete control of my vehicle and be able to manipulate it, or rather drift it. Even though it’s summer, this past winter, we were invited to Gimli, Manitoba for the annual AMG Winter Sporting Program, where we learned how to drift various AMG vehicles. Trust me, sign up for this event because it’s spectacular. Read about my experiences, complete with pictures, in this issue. Also, in this issue, we welcome Candy Chung, Jay Kana, and Jason Tchir, new contributors who share their views and opinions about the new Honda Accord Hybrid, Kia Sorento, and Mazda CX-9. Sandeep Gill compares the Nissan Armada with the Infiniti QX80. You’ll also find our regular Quick Looks, Gadgets & Gears, and Dining with Pash-ion features. Drive and ride safe and enjoy the summer with friends and family. horW vWg ieh mYN vI hYrwn huMdw hW ik qknIk ikMnI CyqI bdldI jw rhI hY[ ieh bdlwA hr Kyqr ‘c ho irhw hY[ mYN blYk AYNf vHweIt tI vI qoN Altrw AYc fI skrIn q`k dI hoeI qbdIlI vI vyKI hY[ rotrI PonW qoN kMipaUtr-lweIk smwrt Pon, ie`QoN q`k ik ies qrHW dy blb Aqy kYmry ijnHW nUM dunIAw ‘c dUr duryfy bYTy vI kMtrol kr skdy ho, Awid imlx l`g pey hn[ jdoN hor qbdIlIAW ho rhIAW hn, motr g`fIAW ‘c vI ies qrHW dI qbdIlI hoxI hI sI Aqy auh hoeI vI hY Aqy ho vI rhI hY[imswl vjoN g`l krIey sYlP pwrikMg fRweIivMg vhIkl dI[ ies qrHW dIAW bhuq swrIAW vhIklW mwrikt ‘ c Aw geIAW hn jo Awpxy Awp pwrk huMdIAW hn[ kyvl ‘qy kyvl ie`k btn d`bx dI hI loV hY[iv`c bYTy rho Aqy vyKdy rho ik btn d`bx nwl tr`k jW kwr iks qrHW Awpxy Awp pwrk ho rhy hn[ hux jdoN g`l AOto pwielt Aisstf qknIk Bwv Awpxy Awp c`lx vwLIAW vhIklW dI Aw rhI hY qW CyqI hI ibnw fRweIvr dI shwieqw ‘qy vhIklW AwpxI mMizl ‘qy Awp hI phuMc jwxgIAW[ pr myrw injI ivcwr hY ik mYN AwpxI vhIkl nUM Awp clwvW Aqy mrzI Anuswr spIf Gtw vDw skW[ hux grmI dw mOsm c`l irhw hY[ swnUM bIqI srdI rùqy mYnItobw sUby dy Sihr igmlI ‘c s`idAw igAw[ikauN ik aùQy AMG Winter Sporting Program dw smwgm sI[ aùQy AsIN ieh is`iKAw ik ey AYm jI dIAW v`K v`K vhIklW nUM ikvyN firPt krnw hY[ myrw zkIn krnw Aqy A`gy qoN hox vwLy ies smwgm ‘c jwx leI zrur sweIn A`p krnw[ kwrn ieh ik ieh bhuq hI Swndwr smwgm huMdw hY[ ies AMk ‘c qsvIrW smyq, myrw ies sbMDI lyK zrur pVHo[ies ‘c mYN Awpxy swry qzribAW nUM ivsQwr nwl d`isAw hY[ ies AMk ‘c AsIN Awpxy nvyN lyKkW kYNfI cMug, jyA kYnw Aqy jYsn dw vI svwgq krdy hW, ijnHW ny nvIN AMG Winter Sporting Program sbMDI Awpxy Awpxy ivcwr pyS kIqy hn[ ies dy nwL hI sMdIp ig`l horW ny Nissan Armada dw mukwblw Infiniti QX80 nwL kIqw hY[ies AMk ‘c cldI Aw rhI pihlI lyK lVI Quick Looks, Gadgets & Gears, Aqy Dining with Pash-ion vI Swml hY[ sur`iKAq FMg nwL vhIkl clwE Aqy ienHW grmIAW dw Awpxy im`qrW Aqy Gr vwiLAW nwL rL ky AnMd mwxo!

2019 Mazda MX-5 Revs Up With More Power

T

he Mazda MX-5 has never been about power; it’s a car whose sole purpose is to help the driver and passenger fall in love with driving. But, a little extra power never hurts, which comes as one aspect of numerous updates for the 2019 model year. For the fourth model year of the ND generation, Mazda’s engineers enriched MX-5’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine with the goals of improved response, performance, feel and efficiency. The net results are 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm—a 17-percent improvement—and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a richer torque curve throughout MX-5’s entire rev range. As a result of numerous changes, MX-5 aims to be quicker, more responsive and more engaging to drive, adhering to Mazda’s unique Jinba Ittai—”horse and rider as one”—engineering philosophy. Beyond engine improvements, the 2019 MX-5 introduces an available brown canvas soft top, new black metallic 16 and 17inch wheels, a newly telescoping steering wheel (42mm of travel), easier-to-open doors and revised door stops and revised cupholders and seat levers. On the safety front, the 2019 MX-5 will be sold with a new rearview camera and newly available features such as Traffic Sign Recognition and Smart City Brake Support in addition to other

J U L / AU G 2018

i-ACTIVSENSE safety technologies found throughout various trim levels. In the process of gaining many new features, the 2019 MX-5 gains just 3 kg (7 lbs.) from previous models, owing to a strict adherence to Mazda’s “Gram Strategy” and ingenious solutions like adopting an aluminum steering shaft in place of the previous steel unit. When the fourth-generation MX-5 launched, its development team rallied around the idea of innovating in order to preserve. The latest round of innovations aim to continue that mission. The 2019 Mazda MX-5 will be available in Canada this summer, with pricing, packaging and full specifications to be announced closer to on-sale timing.

Volvo Cars Opens First US Factory

V

olvo Cars inaugurated its first US manufacturing plant, in Charleston, South Carolina, establishing the company as a truly global car manufacturer with plants in all three major sales regions. The establishment of a state-of-the-art production facility in South Carolina follows Volvo Cars’ global manufacturing strategy, ‘Build where you sell.’ The company’s first US facility complements its two manufacturing plants and an engine plant in Europe, three car factories and an engine plant in China, and assembly plants in India and Malaysia. The Charleston plant starts production of the new Volvo S60 premium mid-size sports sedan, based on the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, in the fall of 2018. From 2021, the factory will also build the next generation of the Volvo XC90 large premium SUV. Cars built at the plant are destined both for the domestic US market and international export. “The Charleston plant establishes the US as our third home market,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “The sedan segment and the SPA platform’s proven

ability to boost profitability offer significant growth opportunities for Volvo Cars in the US and globally.” Volvo Cars is investing around USD 1.1 billion in its US manufacturing operations and will create around 4,000 new jobs at the Charleston site over the coming years. Approximately 1,500 staff will be employed by the end of this year. “The opening of our first American factory is a very big deal,” said Anders Gustafsson, president and CEO of Volvo Car USA. “Our US business is developing well, our cars have won prestigious awards, and the new South Carolina facility will be a big asset to both Volvo Cars and the community.” The new Charleston facility includes an office building for up to 300 staff from R&D, purchasing, quality and sales. The plant can produce 150,000 cars per year at full capacity. The site occupies 1,600 acres and the building space covers 2.3 million square feet. Construction on the facility broke ground in 2015. The company will build plug-in hybrid cars at all of its car plants globally. In 2017 Volvo Cars was the first global car maker to announce its strategy that from 2019 all new models will be electrified.

One Honda, One Hundred Thousand Trees

F

orest Recovery Canada and the Honda Canada Foundation are celebrating nearly 100,000 trees planted as part of a longstanding partnership to enhance forests across Canada. Forest Recovery Canada is a national tree planting effort with a focus on enhancing forest cover and connectivity across Canada. Working alongside local planting organizations, municipalities, First Nations groups, environmental groups, and corporate sponsors, FRC strategically establishes forests across Canada, all in support of a common goal of healthy and resilient ecosystems. Since 2013, the Honda Canada Foundation has supported Forest Recovery Canada's tree planting programs through the One Honda. One Tree. campaign, which plants a tree for every Honda lawn and garden or ATV product sold from April 1st to July 31st each year. In 2018, Forest Recovery Canada and Honda planted trees in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; Boucherville, Quebec; Surrey, British Columbia; and Calgary, Alberta. Local tree planting partners and Honda employees joined us to plant trees in support of greater habitat, clean air and water, and a more resilient ecosystem. "FRC is proud of every tree we plant with partners like the

Honda Canada Foundation," says Forest Recovery Canada CEO Rob Keen. "We're also proud that our commitment and those of our partners is long-term. Honda Canada Foundation has committed year after year to making our landscapes greener and healthier." "As an environmentally-responsible company, our planting events with Forest Recovery Canada are something we look forward to every year," says Dave Jamieson, Chair of the Honda Canada Foundation. "These events are an opportunity for Honda associates and their families across the country to advance our mission to ensure blue skies for our children." Keen adds that in facing the challenge of climate change, a national tree planting strategy is imperative. "Large, contiguous forests have the greatest capacity to sequester emissions and provide habitat and moderate extreme temperatures," Keen adds. "Across the country, we have opportunities to create those connections between our forests and ensure a healthy environment and future for all Canadians." National efforts are made possible by partnerships between groups and organizations with a common commitment to healthy forests and natural ecosystems.

70 Years of Land Rover

T

his year marks the 70th anniversary of the production of the first Land Rover. The brand is knitted firmly into the fabric of Britain and many more nations across the globe. As at ease on the streets of Mayfair or Paris as partnering with the British Red Cross to deliver aid in areas deemed inaccessible, Land Rover has transcended its original remit, being the agricultural workhorse, to be seen as much more. From the rusty old Series I prototype uncovered in a garden, to the latest state-of-the-art Range Rover Velar, generations of Land Rovers have ruled for 70 years, adapting, developing and changing to suit the needs of those who drive them. The refinement of the Range Rover, versatility of the Discovery and the durability of the Defender are all testament to Land Rover’s extraordinary engineering and design achievements in those 70 years. From the beach, jungle, bush, desert and the mountains to the mud, sand and snow; as the first true all-terrain vehicle, Land Rover has always stood for capability and adventure. Winter Sporting Program

Y

ou may be asking why we are featuring a winter surface, how was it supposed to keep traction on ice? Well, each driving event in the dead of summer. Well, to be Lappi tire had over 400 studs glued in by hand by a husband and honest, it’s to give readers ample time to sign up wife team in Sweden. In total, they prepare over 600 sets of tires for for the event – believe you me, you really need the events in Canada and Sweden. to register for this event. So now I’m belted in, heat on, and ready to go. We’re instructed The AMG Winter Sporting Program is not new; it’s been to start slowly, but with each turn, add more speed, something very successful in Sweden for the past twelve years. In 2017, the completely counterintuitive to my natural tendencies. The first time program was brought to Gimli, Manitoba and from what we know, the back end of the E63 S breaks out, there’s a moment of thrill, it’s here to stay. This year, I was invited by Mercedes-Benz Canada but only a moment. I’m now facing backwards and have to start to partake in the program, which was only one and a half days for again. For the next 45 minutes, which went by way too fast, I was us, compared to the two or three-day programs that are open to the able to tame the E63 S around the twists and turns without many public. But I’ll tell you, the one and a half days were pretty darn incidents. It’s hard to drift a car in daylight, so imagine how much spectacular. more difficult it is in darkness. When we arrived at the hotel, it was pitch dark and -27 degrees The next morning began with Danny covering the safety aspects, Celcius, not including the wind chill factor. Right after checking in followed by an intensive but quick course on handling, braking, and having a quick safety talk and tutorial, we were ushered onto balance, and drifting. After that, back onto the frozen lake. the track, because really, why waste time. It was hard to appreciate the entire circuit in the dark, but in Lake Winnipeg became our playground. Yes, this winter daylight, the playground left me speechless. Over 345 acres are program takes place on frozen Lake Winnipeg – before you freak taken over by AMG to create the various circuits, including the out and think it’s dangerous, here are some facts. The ice is over “Lap of Continents”, which spans almost 7.5km and has twists 150cm thick and can handle a Hercules military plane. So, trust me, mimicking various tracks around the globe. it’s pretty safe. According to chief instructor and race car driver, Today’s schedule was simple – apply what we learned in Danny Kok, over 30,000 people have completed the AMG Winter the morning class session to the track, control the AMG’s, and Sporting program with no incident. “Safety is key for this program,” ultimately, drift each of the cars like a pro…well, almost. And in says Danny. “It’s about having fun, in a controlled environment, case you crash on a snow bank, try to get yourself out before the where you can learn to push these vehicles beyond your current “Vulture” (a black G550) comes to winch you out. comfort level. Welcome to White Hell.” First for me was again the E63 S. Let me say it again – this car Carved on the lake are over five tracks, ranging from ovals and is a beast and once controlled, an absolute thrill to drift. There’s circles to full figure-eights – there’s even a full race nothing like a big, heavy sedan going around a course – that allow participants to really develop and corner, with the back end going one way, the tires hone their winter and drifting skills. Since it was pointed another, and me, in the driver seat smiling dark, there wasn’t much to see, except what was alit ear-to-ear. I will admit however, that one time I did from the headlamps of our awaiting fleet. put the car on the snowbank and the Vulture had to This year’s Winter Driving Program fleet included winch me out. Tsk tsk tsk. the AMG CLA 45, AMG C63 S, and the AMG E63 Next up, the CLA 45. Don’t be fooled by the S. Each of these beasts have their own personality smallest of the bunch. The CLA 45 is, by far, the and our task was to tame them. Since the night drive easiest to master, thanks to its short wheelbase and was only a taste of what was to come the next day, I front-biased AWD. Within just a couple of rounds, chose the king of the fleet, the AMG E63 S. This 603 I was maintaining the drift like a pro, with snow Jag Dhatt hp rear-biased AWD sedan has a whopping 627 lb.-ft. spewing up from all four tires. able to drift the car around every corner. If the CLA 45 was the easiest to drift and master, the C63 S became my Achilles Heel. With over 503 hp all going exclusively to the rear tires, the back end came out with just a touch of throttle. After a frustrating couple of laps, I asked an instructor to sit with me and tell me what I was doing wrong. I do have to say that the AMG instructors not only have a wealth of knowledge and experience, they teach with such practicality and patience that attendees learn quickly. For me, it was to touch the brake to pitch the front end for grip, then on the throttle at around 4000 rpm, and crank the steering wheel. The biggest mistake, I was told, is that drivers ease on the throttle, again, the natural tendency. But if you follow the instructions, like I did, I was able to beautifully arc the C63 S. What a feeling! With the exception of a short lunch break, the experience was all in the cars. For the grand finale, we all drove the Lap of Continents, drifting and sliding to our own abilities. I chose my final drive to be in the CLA 45, the one I truly mastered. With the chilly wind beating against my cheeks, I looked around and noticed that all of us had the same look on our faces. Yes, it was a little sad the event was over, but everyone, and I mean everyone, was wearing ear-to-ear smiles. Most people choose warmer places during the cold winters in Canada. But if you really want to get away from the winter blues and enjoy some time in White Hell, check out AMG Winter Sporting programs. You’ll be glad you did.

ia’s Canadian tale is similar to the “Tortoise and the Hare” fable where it’s an exercise in patience and having a long-game strategy. Yes, they’ve steadily been building their reputation based on affordability and reliable vehicles, however in 2018, Hyundai’s sister company boasts the remarkable and sexy Stinger, the ultra-popular Soul, the underappreciated yet uber-luxurious K-900, along with other terrific vehicles in their lineup. They’ve also launched a refreshed version for the 2019 model year of their best-selling Sorento crossover. The Kia folks call it an “intermediate crossover” as it’s not quite mid-sized and not quite compact. To me, it’s a mid-sized crossover, primarily based on the available seating for seven. The changes to a non-Kia enthusiast may be overlooked but I assure you, after spending a few hundred clicks behind Jay Kana the wheel, they’re definitely there. On

the outside, the 2019 Sorento sees an updated grille, redesigned LED quad fog lights, tail lights and a slightly different looking bumper. It’s still a conservatively designed vehicle, opposed to some of their competitors who love sharp creases in the body… nonetheless, there wasn’t anything wrong or offensive with the 2018 model, so why make unnecessary changes to the body, right? If I were to change anything, I’d add a second exhaust pipe on the left side of the bumper, giving it a uniformed look. Power-wise, they’ve retired the turbo 4cylinder engine, leaving them with two engines options (maybe a diesel will show up later this year…) that have been brought forward from the 2018 iteration. There’s a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine producing 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft. of torque routed through a 6-speed gearbox. And then there’s the significantly larger 3.3L V6 churning out 290 horsepower and 252 lb-ft. of torque. The big change is that the V6 is paired with a very smooth shifting 8-speed gearbox, which lets you tug around 5,000 lbs of whatever your adventure needs are. My jaunt was with the top-trip SXL and as I twisted and turned my way through cottage country’s backroads, the V6

2019 Kia Sorento

responded quickly to my right-foot input and climbing hills was done with ease. For a mid-sized crossover, the Sorento handles respectably well with minimal body roll and they’ve struck a pleasant balance in the ride comfort department, making for what should be enjoyable road trips. I’ve always enjoyed Kia’s smartly laid out interior and its high ease of use. The combination of buttons and dials are very user-friendly and they’ve kept the formula of making it very easy for the driver to make changes on the fly without any guesswork. Standard on the Sorento is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system (SX/ SXL gets an additional inch) along with a backup camera and good ol’ Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The standard heated seats are still as comfortable as ever (cloth, leather and Nappa leather are available as you climb the trim ladder) fit and finish score high marks with me and the available panoramic sunroof gives an already generous interior an added feeling of openness in the cabin. Entry trim LX gets 5 seats, so no 3rd row, while the EX and SX/SXL trims (obviously) get a third row with two seats that are ideal for non-adults.

Let’s talk cargo space, shall we? With the second and third row of seats folded, you get a whopping 2,066L of cargo space (2,082L in the LX) which is ample space for plenty of urban or rural gear. Behind the second row, there’s a respectable 1,077L for groceries, golf clubs, suitcases, tents, etc. So storage-wise, Sorento scores well with me. Blind spot monitoring, front/rear parking sensors and rearcross traffic alert show up on the EX and higher trims and lane keep assist, driver attention alerts and forward collision avoidance and a 360-degree camera are only available on the top-trip SXL, which to me is a way to keep mid-trim level costs down…not necessarily a bad thing. Oh, and there is a wireless charging pad for anyone without an iPhone in all trims but the LX FWD. Priced from $27,995 to $48,865, the 7 flavours of Sorento are staggered so that each prospective buyer has something that should fit in their wheelhouse. Kia’s not out to reinvent the wheel with the 2019 iteration of their internally best-selling vehicle. Rather, they’ve made subtle changes to make a good product even better.

here are certain iconic vehicles in the realm of rough country workhorses and people movers that even those uninitiated to the world of cars will recognize, like, the Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Discovery, and Nissan Patrol. Nissan Patrol? What is that? Pretty much anywhere outside of North America the Nissan Patrol is as well-known as those other vehicles. It is the quintessential people mover of armies, the UN and is a staple image for those who watch CNN. But North America’s introduction to the Nissan Patrol did not come with a connection to a tried and tested history going back to the 1950’s, but, rather we were given the Nissan Armada back in 2010. Why Nissan chose to leave behind a history that rivals that of the legendary Land Cruiser I can’t really say. Especially, in Canada, we are so globally diverse that it would have greatly benefited the introduction into this market. That stated the Nissan Armada and sister truck Infiniti QX80 represent fully capable, full size, off-road SUV’s. The 2018 current iterations we have here in the form of the Platinum Reserve and QX80 dressed in

Champagne Quartz present future buyers with a conundrum. The two vehicles on paper are essentially identical – the interiors offer plush and opulent surroundings, diamond/double stitched leather, almost every part of the vehicle is covered in this luxurious material (miles of it). They, however, present very differently. The Armada exudes a degree of machismo and bravado that the QX80 lacks. The exterior of the Armada’s lower cladding and wheel arches don a two-tone paint scheme, breaking up the large expansive lines of the SUV. The Reserve edition also changes up the conventional chrome for dark chrome that gives the front fascia of the Armada an almost menacing look. Turn to the QX80 and the lines become softer and the ride more supple and cloud-like due in part to Hydraulic Body Motion Control (HBMC) a system that actively adjusts the suspension to manage body lean and bounce (unique to the QX80). The QX80 pumps out 10 more horsepower from the Endurance 5.6 Liter V8 for 400 bhp and 413 lb-ft of torque giving it an 8500-pound towing capacity. Despite the output differences, the two siblings

n 1968 Ford introduced the mid-sized vehicle, the Torino, which stayed in production until 1976. The Torino replaced the Fairlane, although the name persisted on the base level models but given differnet trim than the Torino versions. The Torino was available as a two-door fastback or convertible, four-door sedan or station wagon, hardtop, and as a pickup, similar to the El Camino. The Torino was actively raced in the NASCAR circuit. In 1969, Ford introduced the Torino Talladega. This limited-edition vehicle was given an aerodynamic body style which they then used on the NASCAR circuit.

Ford

TORINO

In 1970 Ford introduced the Torino Cobra complete with a 428 cubicinch Cobra Jet engine. Power was transferred to the rear wheels courtesy of a four-speed manual gearbox. The suspension was upgraded and a dualexhaust unit added. Bucket seats continued the performance montage in the interior. A Traction-Lok limitedslip differential was optional. A ‘shaker’ hood scoop could be ordered as optional equipment which helped the engine breath at high speeds. The Torino Brougham version offered luxurious amenities which offered a sporty appearance and creaturecomforts.

During the early 1970’s, the Torino was updated giving it an aggressive look and modern appeal. For 1971, the look was all-new and good enough to capture Motor Trend’s coveted ‘Car of the Year’ award. The GT version had hidden headlights, the only Torino to have such a design. For 1972, the grille was enlarged; vent windows were removed from four-door models and the convertible option was no longer offered. The abbreviation ‘GT’ was now labeled as Gran Torino. Not only was 1971 through 1972 a big year for redesigns, the engine options saw drastic changes. In 1971 the Torino could be purchased with a wide range of engines that included a 351 Cleveland small-block and a Ford 429 cubic-inch engine. The performance could be further increased with the adoption

of a Thunder Jet, Cobra Jet or Super Cobra Jet package. As government regulations and emissions standards were becoming stricter, the muscle car era was coming to an end. For 1972, only the 31 Cleveland eight-cylinder engine was available, however, still available in Cobra Jet configuration. In 1973, to comply with government and safety regulations, the front end was given a larger bumper. This trend continued in 1974 when the front was modified to make the vehicle safer. The performance era had come to an end and consumers were expecting a new breed of vehicles

which kept manufacturers struggling to meet these demands. The trend was shifting from larger, performance machines to fuel-efficient, safe, economical, and luxurious vehicles. This was true with the Torino which saw the performance options fade away from year-to-year, and more luxury offerings being presented. The TV series ‘Starsky and Hutch’ drove a 1975 Gran Torino adorned in bright red colors and white body stripes. In 1976 the production of the Torino ceased and replaced by the LTD.

onths of anticipation ended in disgust and a nasty taste I can’t get out of my mouth. When I first saw the trailer parked outside announcing that Tandoori Flame was coming soon, the buzz talk started months in advance. Stories of the famed 150 item buffet from the Greater Toronto Area told of a greatly popular place that was well loved. When they finally opened I took my friend there for a birthday lunch. One rule I usually follow is when you take someone somewhere to celebrate their birthday, don’t take them somewhere new. Always take them to a place you know well and can guarantee your friend a good dining experience because it’s their special day and they deserve it. I didn’t follow my cardinal rule and it came back to haunt me. My birthday friend is a long time friend and she was coming from downtown Vancouver to Surrey to run some errands, and to have lunch with me. She had heard about Tandoori Flame and her downtown friends urged her to go check it out. So following her request and breaking the rule, we tried a new unexplored place instead of tried and true. We met at 1:30 to avoid the lunch

rush, or so we thought. I pulled up first and there were lineups outside the door. I quickly got in the lineup and my friend joined me after she arrived. There was ample parking, which was a hint. How can there be parking, when there are supposedly 450 people seated inside and about 50 in the lineup? It was a bit suspicious. After a half hour wait, we were seated, only to find multiple empty tables and still a huge lineup outside of the door. I was very angry. There were more than enough seats for everyone, yet people were made to wait!!! I don’t know what game they were playing, but my friend and I were fuming. We were seated at a dirty table and then told to go get food while they cleaned the table. Really??? I was shocked. Then i was shocked at the horrible staff. They were constantly in the way of clients and forcing clients to move out of THEIR way, instead of them politely stepping aside. The customer is NOT always right and the staff were a bunch of rude buffoons. Roll out the red carpet for the staff because apparently they’re entitled royalty, and you the paying client is a mere minion. I suggest the staff learn some manners and respect for Column by- Pash Brar // Mobile Leasing Rep. at Auto One Leasing LP

clientele. We decided to walk through the buffet before picking and choosing, and were done very quickly. We realized there were 150 items, but things like lime wedges and bay leaves were counted as an item. We made jokes that EACH ice cream flavour was a separate item, because there was not much variety at all. There were also things that were not Indian food which was confusing. Spring rolls, pizza, onion rings? All previously frozen too. I actually witnessed a staff member opening store bought containers of golgappa’s and replenishing the stock. The same brand is in Fruiticana if anyone wants to buy them. I guess my friend and I have both been spoiled by Las Vegas buffets where everything, including the pasta, and soup stock are made from scratch. Tasting pre-frozen items and store bought things, like cut fruits, and cakes was what I call an “M&M Meat Market party”. It’s a party where the host bought all the food for a party at M&M Meats frozen, heated it up and put it out for guests. But the host of the party at least serves the food hot, and Tandoori Flame did not. All our food was cold. As you leave your table to get more items, if you’re lucky a server will clear your dirty plates. But you will come back to the same dirty cutlery and used napkins. Apparently it’s too difficult to wash some forks and knives, but they can wash all the plates you want. My friend and I had to use our hands to eat cut fruit because it took over 10 minutes to bring new cutlery after we asked and were given a look of disbelief that we had the nerve to ask for a fresh fork and knife. I guess it’s normal to eat fruit

and cake with a fork covered in butter chicken at Tandoori Flame. All the hype and pure disappointment. What I found really pathetic was the soft serve ice cream machine was not working. As I tried and tried and there was actually a staff member standing there ignoring me on purpose and my friend finally said to the staff very loudly “Is there something wrong with the ice cream machine?” The girl meekly replied “It doesn’t work.” Thanks! Let’s have me standing there like an idiot trying to use a machine that is broken as you ignore me and I don’t know..... would a CLEARLY MARKED SIGN that says “BROKEN” maybe help in the future??? I signed up on the website and was given a two for one buffet email coupon to try. That will be a shift delete email. I will unsubscribe from their future emails as well. I cringe at the thought of ever going back. I know another good friend wanted to try and I have told him I will suffer and have begged to not go again. I ask myself “why didn’t I take my friend to Tasty Indian Bistro down the street which I know she loves?” I have huge regrets and so does my friend. It was NOT worth the drive for my friend and she has told her downtown friends not to bother. But I know an Indian restaurant just down the street that IS worth the drive, TASTY INDIAN BISTRO! They’re opening soon in Yaletown too. If they have a wait, at least it’s a REAL wait because the restaurant is ACTUALLY full. If you ask me what my favorite dish at Tandoori Flame was, my friend and I both have the same response, “The store bought ice cream.”

2019 Lexus ES

2018 Nissan Kicks

N

ne of the best-selling and most reliable sedans has just gotten better, and I mean a whole lot better. Although the ES has been a fan favourite of middle-aged people for years, Lexus wanted to attract a younger buying crowd. So, they built the new ES with better styling, technology, and driving dynamics. I was invited by Lexus for the ES global launch in Nashville, where we drove both the gas and hybrid variants. While both are great, the gas-powered version can now be optioned with the F-Sport package, a first for this lineup. With the F-Sport package added to the lower, wider, and longer ES, the overall look is very attractive. The interior of the ES has also been redone and for the first time, features Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay (no Android Auto yet). I sat in the rear seats and let me tell you, there is an impressive amount of leg and headroom. It’s safe to say that the new ES is a definite step in the right direction for attracting younger buyers, especially with the F-Sport package added.

issan has been on a roll in the past few years, offering buyers some great vehicles at very affordable pricing. The Micra was the most affordable car in Canada at just $9,998 when it was launched a few years back. Now, Nissan has done it again with the new Kicks. Starting at just $17, 998, the Kicks offers a great small SUV that comes with lots of standard options, including a CVT, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Remote Keyless Entry with Push Button Start, Bluetooth Hands Free, and Rearview Camera, just to name a few. No, it doesn’t have AWD, but the Kicks is aimed at city dwellers who need a reliable, sub-compact SUV for getting around. If you spend a little more money, you can customize the Kicks with options like Headrest Bose speakers, LED headlamps and signature accents, Intelligent Around View Monitor, and a different coloured roof. I drove the Kicks during the Canadian launch event and was thoroughly impressed with the vehicle. In fact, when my aunt was looking for an affordable but optioned subcompact SUV, I recommended the Kicks, which she bought!

I

f you’ve got about $170K burning a hole in your pocket, go to your local Mercedes-Benz dealership, walk over to an AMG GT C Roadster and write a cheque. This vehicle is the reinvention of a pure sports car and boy, does it ever turn heads. The long, sculpted hood, Panamericana grille, and active rear spoilers ooze sensuality, elegance, and strength. Powered by a hand-crafted 4.0L V8 Biturbo, the car can propel you to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds. Yes, it’s head-snapping to say the least. The cabin is perfectly balanced for when going to the office or racetrack. In fact, I was told by a friend that I looked like a brain surgeon while driving the car! How’s that for a compliment! The top can be folded up or down in just 11 seconds, and can be done even while driving under speeds of 50 km/h. What impressed me was that even with the top down, Bluetooth conversations were still good. The AMG GT C Roadster is loud, fast, low to the ground, yet more comfortable than last year’s GT. What’s not to like? 28

T

he big three – Dodge, Ford, and GMC – have always fought for the number one spot for trucks, with Ford always having the slight edge. Things are about to change with the new RAMs coming on strong. No longer toting the Dodge name for some years, the 2019 RAM 1500 has some pretty impressive upgrades over the current year. We were invited to Windsor, Ontario to drive the new 1500 and I have to say, the truck is pretty impressive. Available now with only the V6 Pentastar or the 5.7 Hemi V8, we were told that the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel will be available next year. The cabin of the truck is still recognizable, but what stands out is the available 12” Touchscreen, which can be configured in many ways. The rear seat area offers best in-class legroom and as a first, reclining rear seats for even more comfort. Add a flat rear floor and you’ve got ample, usable space for all your needs. The 2019 RAM 1500 is also super quiet. Driving at over 100 km/h, I was impressed with how quiet the cabin was, almost luxury sedan quiet. I’m sold!

2018 Mazda CX-9

2018

MAZDA

I

CX-9

’ll admit it: when I thought of cars I’d most like to take on hairpin curves in the mountains, a three-row, sevenseater SUV wasn’t on the list. So, when I picked up the 2018 Mazda CX-9 to take some 1,800 km to Fairmont Hot Springs and back, I was wishing I had something smaller. After all, I’d be driving alone and family-haulers are big, lumbering and just not fun. But once I got out of the city, I was wishing I could pick up a few extra people along the way to show off how nimble, and nice, the CX-9 really is. Mazda introduced its second-generation CX-9 last year and it’s the company’s flagship — it shows off both its tech and luxury craftsmanship. First, the engine. Mazda is known for zoom-zoom and the CX-9 delivers. The 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 227 ponies (250 if you feed it premium, although Mazda says most drivers probably won’t be able to tell the difference in

30

JULY / AUGUST 2018

normal driving). Mazda says it gets 11.5 litres/100 km in the city and 8.9 on the highway — I got 10.1. It doesn’t have a V-6 like some rivals, but I didn’t miss it — it had plenty of oomph and I had no trouble passing anyone, even on the steepest parts of the Coquihalla. The CX-9 drives like a smaller, sportier car — it’s surprisingly fun. It doesn’t look like a big, boxy SUV either — it’s sleek and sculpted. It’s good-looking and not just good-looking for family hauler — it’s one of the sharpest vehicles out there, period. In fact, when I finally got to Fairmont — I met my folks, brother and his family there — everybody was surprised that it seated seven: “I guess it’s big but it doesn’t look that big.” And they were also surprised by the luxury inside: “This is a Mazda?” The cabin looks like it could belong to a German luxury SUV — it’s classy, clean and simple with lots of stitching, soft surfaces and leather. And on the road, it’s impressively quiet. I had the GT ($49,445 including freight, as tested), which

2018 Mazda CX-9

had all the tech bells and whistles, including heated front and second-row leather seats, heated steering wheel, navigation and 12-speaker Bose sound system. For $3,000 more, the top-of-theline Signature adds nappa leather, an LED-lit grille and real wood trim. But the CX-9 is missing a few touches — ventilated seats and a bigger, panoramic sunroof — that luxury brands usually

deliver (although, they do it for a lot more money than the CX-9 costs). Inside, the controls are intuitive and simple. Almost everything is where you need it to be. The GT comes with Mazda’s safety tech package, which includes pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist and adaptive

cruise control. The lane-keeping assist is subtle — it doesn’t CX-9 for 2019 (and owners of current models will be able to get wrestle the steering wheel to keep you in the centre lane like a paid upgrade). some others do. It’s helping, but you don’t really notice it until It’s not the roomiest seven-seater out there — the third row is you need it. snug for two adults and, with the second row all the way back, there’s not a lot of leg room back there. But it’s fine for kids. And Tech also includes a windshield projected heads-up display that shows speed, the posted speed limit (the CX-9 there are rivals with more cargo room behind the reads signs on the side of the road), navigation third row. With the third row up, the CX-9 holds directions and whether there are cars approaching 407 litres. That’s enough for groceries in town, or on either side. a reasonable amount of luggage on a road trip, but I had a few minor gripes — but I had to look you won’t fit golf clubs back there unless you put down at least half of the third row. hard for them. I still find Mazda’s centre-console mounted volume knob tough to get used to (but, still, The bottom line is that the CX-9 delivers looks, it’s good to have a volume knob) and simple things luxury and fun-to-drive performance that you won’t get from a Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot. like changing stations take a little figuring out on the touchscreen- and wheel-controlled infotainment On the way back, I decided to go the long way that winds along the U.S. border. What’s an extra system. It doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Jason Tchir Auto — yet. Mazda says it’s adding both to the couple of hours when you’re having fun?

No Rest for the Wicked, Indeed

D

odge continues to push the performance envelope in 2019, using its high-performance engine street credibility to elevate its entire Challenger lineup, introducing the most powerful supercharged SRT Hellcat lineup ever with horsepower output now starting at 717. And that’s just the beginning. Following a record-setting year with the introduction of the limited-production Dodge Challenger SRT Demon – the quickest, fastest and most powerful muscle car ever – Dodge//SRT is going back to its muscle car roots by taking its biggest, most powerful engine – the supercharged HEMI® Demon V-8 – and leveraging its enormous power output to boost the performance of the Hellcat. The result: the 797-horsepower 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. “With 840 horsepower, a 9.65 quarter-mile time and Guinness World Record certification that it’s the first production car to lift the wheels at launch, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon earned

34

JULY / AUGUST 2018

its place in the record books,” said Steve Beahm – Head of Passenger Cars, Dodge//SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA North America. “The Dodge Brothers would be proud that we’re leveraging the power and performance of this proven engine to bring a Demonpossessed Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye to an even wider highperformance enthusiast audience.” Also new for 2019, Dodge offers the Widebody Package on the Challenger R/T Scat Pack model, which adds 3.5 inches to the overall width, improving handling and braking to the naturally aspirated muscle car. At the track, larger six-piston Brembo front brakes, wider wheels and tires, and suspension upgrades featured on the R/T Scat Pack Widebody equate to 2-second faster lap times or approximately 12 car lengths at a 2.1-mile road course, compared with the non-Widebody Challenger R/T Scat Pack. Production of the 2019 Dodge Challenger lineup starts at the Brampton (Ont.) Assembly Plant in the fall of 2018, with vehicles starting to arrive in dealerships in the fourth quarter.

The Next Generation of the Lexus ES

A

fter six generations of unprecedented success in the midsize sedan category, the nextgeneration Lexus ES is forging a new, more ambitious path. Long known for its unparalleled comfort, refinement and luxury appointments, the seventhgeneration ES builds on its strengths with an all-new chassis that allows for a more dynamic exterior design and the introduction of the first ES F SPORT. Representing the third vehicle in the Future Chapter of Lexus that started with the LC coupe and LS sedan, the new ES expands that vision of the brand’s future to a broader audience. Traditional buyers will find the new ES more spacious, quieter and safer than ever before while a new generation of customers will be introduced to a sedan with sharpened performance, class-leading safety technology

B u i l t

and a level of craftsmanship rarely found in this segment. When it goes on sale in September, the 2019 Lexus ES will usher in a new era for one of the brand’s most popular models. Much like the flagship LS, the new ES sedan addresses the need to engage a broader range of customers. It delivers everything that traditional Lexus buyers expect along with elements that will draw in those who haven’t considered the brand before. Bolder styling, more dynamic performance, unique cabin materials and the latest technology add a chapter to the ES story that hasn’t been told, but that all changes in 2018.

2018 Honda Accord Hybrid

2018

HONDA

ACCORD

HYBRID

E

Contributor: Candy Chung

36

JULY / AUGUST 2018

lectric vehicles have gained attention and popularity recently. They certainly have their strong points such as zero emission and electric motor that doesn’t require any fuel. However, when it comes to purchase price and driving range, hybrid seems to offer the best of both worlds. I had the opportunity to drive the 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring for a week. Having a 2010 Honda Accord as our family vehicle, I already know this car is a great allrounder. The improvements on this 2018 Hybrid version are impressive. Gone is the rather bland people hauler appearance; the 2018 Accord Hybrid has a prominent chrome grille in the front and sloping roofline in the back. The LED headlights resemble the jewel eyes found in Acura. All in all, I think it is a stylish car! The Touring trim comes with perforated leather seats, driver’s seat with 12-way power adjustment including 4-way power lumbar support, power adjustable front passenger seat, 2 memory settings, heated and ventilated front seats, heated back seats, 7” colour TFT display, head up display, wireless charging, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, proximity keyless entry and the list goes on and on. Features that you think you can only find in a more premium car, I bet you can find it here. The seats are comfortable and plush; the leather is nice and smooth. The build quality of the cabin is excellent. I did not find a single piece that feels loose or cheap. The leatherwrapped steering wheel is nice and thick. There are enough buttons on the steering wheel to get you what you need without overwhelming you with buttons. The paddle shifters feel solid but being an E-CVT, I didn’t spend too much time fiddling with the paddle shifters.

2018 Honda Accord Hybrid

The ride is comfortable and quiet, almost as quiet as an all-electric car. The suspension is comfortable with minimal body roll for a full-sized car. However, I wasn’t a big fan of the gear selectors in buttons; I find myself far too often pressing the R button instead of P or vice versa. The steering, while light and not a whole lot of feedback, is precise. The 2.0L Atkinson 212 combined total horsepower engine is rather quick at the starting line and delivers more than sufficient power for my daily commute. Passing power is good too. I didn’t feel like I needed more power at any point during my time with the Accord Hybrid. And even if I did, there’s the Sport button to deliver even better kickdown and sporty handling. Now comes the most important question for a hybrid car: what’s the real world fuel economy? The listed combined fuel economy from Honda is 5.1L/100km. I did 6.6L/100km and I drove about 300km. I was driving in Sport mode maybe 30% of the time, so perhaps that bumped the number up. To give it some perspective, our 2010 Accord is above 10, so 6.6 is significantly better. If I absolutely want to save on fuel, I can choose between EV (electric) and Eco modes on the 2018 Accord Hybrid. The 2018 Accord Hybrid comes standard with Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist System, Lane Departure Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Honda LaneWatch blind spot display; while the Touring trim offers Blind Spot Information system with Rear Cross Traffic Monitor system. There were numerous times the system intervenes and alerts me to correct my steering. Sometimes they were legit and some other times I wasn’t sure why the alerts came on. There were also numerous times that the Brake alert came on. I guess I was following the car in front of me a bit too close. One thing I really liked about the head up display was being able to see the speed limit. It really deters me from speeding. Another area that the 2018 Accord impresses me is cabin space. I thought our 2010 Accord was already very spacious, but the 2018 Accord seems to provide even more legroom. Not sure how that’s possible but Honda did it. I installed a rear-facing car seat to drive my toddler around and there is still plenty of space left in the back. The trunk space is more than enough and very easy to store things with 60/40 split. I didn’t find the trunk space being impeded by batteries. So, what is my verdict on 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid? I would say it is a stylish family car that is great on fuel and feels quick and premium. If you are shopping for a spacious car that offers great fuel economy over a long driving range, you should definitely check out the 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid which is available now starting from $33,090.

2018 AJAC EcoRun Shows off Impressive Fuel-Efficient Results

T

he 7th annual Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) EcoRun continued its impressive record of fuel economy results in the province of New Brunswick. Nineteen AJAC journalists from across Canada convened in Moncton to participate in the fuel-efficient driving event which showcased the latest and greatest offerings from a broad spectrum of automakers. Over the course of two days, those journalists piloted 19 eco-friendly vehicles that vary in size and engine to an average of 1.59 L/100 km better than the official Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) combined fuel economy rating. “Each year, it’s astonishing to see how well most vehicles perform when driven in a calm, fuel-efficient manner,” explains David Miller, cochair, AJAC EcoRun. “The findings at this year’s EcoRun is a testament to the automakers for advancing not only alternative powertrains, but also the internal combustion engine providing consumers ample environmentally-friendly choices when deciding on their next vehicle.” The 2018 EcoRun ran the gamut of alternative powertrains including pure electrics such as the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf; plug-in and conventional hybrids including the Kia Optima PHEV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e; the Honda Clarity fuel cell and the Chevrolet Equinox were the lone hydrogen and dieselfueled offerings, respectively; while highly-efficient gasoline options like the Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Kicks rounded up the pack. Outside of the two EVs that managed the lowest fuel economy average at 1.8 Le/100 km, the Honda Clarity plug-in achieved an impressive 2.5 L/100 km, followed by the Toyota Prius Prime at 2.9 and Hyundai Ioniq plug-in at 3.0. The biggest difference makers when compared to the NRCan ratings naturally went to the pure gasoline vehicles lead by the Mazda6 that lowered by 2.7 L/100 km combined, followed by the Ford EcoSport at 2.4 and Volkswagen Jetta at 1.7. The total drive covered 570 kilometres and had strategic stops for its existing charging infrastructure, road terrain, scenery and activities offered. Journalists tested various vehicles throughout southern New Brunswick including Sussex, Snider Mountain, Saint John, New River Beach and Saint Andrews, eventually ending the journey in Fredericton on Friday, June 22. All of the 19 vehicle results can be found on the EcoRun website: www.ajac.ca/eco-run/Summary_2018_A.asp “We are very proud to spearhead the very first EcoRun in Atlantic Canada,” Gaëtan Thomas, president and CEO, NB Power. “By having a network of fast chargers throughout our province, it gives electric vehicles owners the peace of mind they need by reducing range anxiety while travelling.” The event was capped off with the Canadian Fuels Association Green Jersey winner, awarded to the eco-friendliest driver throughout the event. For 2018, that honour went to Saskatoon’s Jim Kerr, representing Exhausted.ca. The 2018 AJAC EcoRun is supported by its main partners: Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Canadian Fuels Association, CAA Atlantic Club, Michelin North America (Canada) Inc., NB Power and Tourism New Brunswick.
