JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2016

t the end of every year, there should be a time for reflection. As we look back at 2015, the staff and management of DRK Magazine can only say that it was a great year, with more ups than downs, and that’s what most important. Rather than dwelling on the negatives, be proud of your accomplishments. On a personal note, my family and I were blessed with a baby girl, born in July 2015. There’s nothing more valuable than our children. I can only say that it puts things into perspective and makes one realize what is truly important in life. Even after those long, hard days, coming home and looking into your children’s eyes makes every problem seem miniscule. In 2015, DRK Magazine, and its parent company, JGK Media Inc., were also very proud to include more manufacturers to its test fleet, including big names like Ferrari, Maserati, and Bentley. In addition, DRK Magazine has applied for membership with the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) and we are confident that by the next issue, we will be members in good standing. In this issue, enjoy reviews from our regular road test team. We take an in-depth look at the new Kia Sedona, Audi S3, and the Mini Cooper JCW. One of our new writers, Aman Sundher, who is professional technician and race car driver, gives his opinion regarding the long lasting battle between two amazing cars – the BMW M3 vs. the Mercedes Benz AMG C63. As we look ahead to the new year, the staff and management wish our readers nothing but the best for 2016. ABBOTSFORD COLLISION SHOP NAMED CARSTAR CANADA’S FIRST ‘TIER 2’ SHOP IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

A

bbotsford, BC: CARSTAR 360 Abbotsford has become British Columbia’s first Tier 2 CARSTAR collision shop, designating it the organizations’ first “best in class” repair centre in the province. “It is an honour to receive this designation,” says CARSTAR 360 Abbotsford President Rick Francoeur. “CARSTAR is Canada’s largest and most respected collision organization, and to be named their first Best in Class shop in the province is extremely gratifying. We’ve worked very hard for the past eight years to develop a reputation as one of BC’s top collision shops based on the highest standards of workmanship and customer satisfaction and it’s great to have that dedication to excellence recognized.” CARSTAR 360 Abbotsford is privately owned by brothers Rick and Daryl Francoeur. The shop opened in 2008, and currently services in excess of 500 vehicles annually. 360 is the only CARSTAR dealership in British Columbia to be certified to a Tier 2 (industry leading level), is an ICBC Valet CAR Shop, is one of less than 5% of CARSTAR automotive shops in Canada certified under the Give, Green and Growth (GGG) standards. 360 has been selected a ‘direct repair body shop’ to thirteen different insurance companies in Canada (one of the only shops in the nation to achieve this standard), is dual 5S certified (CASTAR and BASF), and in November, 2015 became the Fraser Valley’s only Honda Certified collision repair centre.

NEW ONLINE SHOW - ‘COMEDIANS IN CARS GETTING COFFEE’ DEBUTS WITH OBAMA AND COMEDIAN SEINFELD

H

awaii – President Barack Obama and comedian Jerry Seinfeld compare cars and trade one-liners in a 19-minute episode of “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee.” The episode began airing Wednesday night, and opens with Seinfeld phoning the president. Seinfeld compliments Obama for “cutting all that red tape in Washington” when Obama appears to answer the call directly.

While Seinfeld introduces Obama to a 1963 Corvette Stingray, Obama lets Seinfeld sit in the back seat of the presidential limo, a Cadillac that Obama refers to as “the beast.” Obama says being able to call a nuclear submarine from the car is a cool feature, plus it has seat warmers.

8

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2016

During the course of the show, Obama relishes the thought of some anonymity and describes Teddy Roosevelt as a guy that might be the most fun to hang out with. He says Roosevelt would take a month-long trip to Yellowstone National Park without anyone knowing where he was. “Sounds pretty good to me,” Obama said. “That’s a lot of messages when you get back,” Seinfeld shot back. The two have some fun at Larry David’s expense. David and Seinfeld co-created the Seinfeld show. At one point, Seinfeld asks how many world leaders are just completely “out of their minds?” “A pretty sizable percentage,” Obama estimated. The White House press office noted the show’s release as the president was vacationing in Hawaii. The show runs on Crackle, a unit of Sony Pictures Television, and can be watched at www. crackle.com . This story has been corrected to reflect that Seinfeld sat in presidential limousine, but did not ride in the vehicle.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO 15 STOLEN MOTORCYCLES

W

aterloo Regional Police say they were able to recover 15 motorcycles with a combined value of $160,000 after they were stolen from a business in Kitchener. Police say they made the discovery after stopping a pickup truck around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, in the area of Ebycrest Drive and Bridge Street east of Kitchener. The truck was towing an enclosed trailer, police say, and something about it raised an officer’s suspicions. “After some investigation, the vehicle was found to contain 15 stolen motorcycles,” Staff Sgt. Mike Hinsperger told CTV News. The vehicles had allegedly been stolen from a business on Victoria Street North in Kitchener – and stolen so recently that the theft had yet to be reported to police. Three men from London are charged with theft and possession of stolen property. The one driving the truck was also charged with a number of traffic offences.

COULD 2016 BE THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE AUTO SHOW AS WE KNOW IT?

A

s the U.S. gets ready to host the first official international auto show of the new year in the heart of its Motor City (Detroit), the list of carmakers choosing to pass on the event is almost as long as the list of new cars expecting to make their debut. When the North American International Autoshow opens its doors to the public on January 11, it will do so without Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini or McLaren. That doesn’t mean that the show will be a disappointment — the new Mercedes E Class, one of the marque’s most important cars, will be making its global debut, as will the new Porsche 911 Turbo. However, as the list of attendees at this year’s event has contracted, the number of car companies heading to the International CES — a trade show for consumer electronics — has never been longer. “Ford was the first automaker to have a significant presence at CES nine years ago, and we are proud to continue that legacy of innovation in 2016,” said Mark Fields, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company. “CES is the perfect venue for sharing news on our efforts to change the way the world moves and provide new solutions in the areas of connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, the customer experience and data and analytics.” As well as a headline sponsor in the shape of Ford, Audi will be demonstrating its production-ready semi-autonomous car, Volkswagen will be showing off a plug-in electric reimagining of its

iconic Microbus campervan and BMW is expected to raise the roof on a convertible version of its ultra high-tech i8 environmentallyfriendly supercar. January’s CES will also be the venue where Toyota formally outlines its plans for artificial intelligence and gives its first demonstrations of connected vehicle and telematics systems. All of which means that as the convergence between high-tech and cars continues apace, the motor show as we know it could be coming to an end. There has not been an official auto show in the UK for a decade due to the high cost of attendance — £5 million per car company, plus the small European market share the country represents. It’s also likely that other shows that were once an integral part of the calendar could soon go the same way. As well as Detroit, the US hosts the Chicago, New York and LA auto shows every year while in Europe, which is just as large a market, there are only two shows a year: Geneva and, for 2016, Paris. Over the past 12 months, Volvo has been experimenting with different digital ways of reaching and interacting with customers — from virtual reality headsets to virtual, online showrooms — while at the same time drastically reducing the number of car shows it attends. Ironically, Detroit is one of only three shows that Volvo will attend in 2016. However, expect the company to be at the International CES as well.

KIA SEDONA

I

could begin this review with the usual chatter about how the popularity of SUVs and crossovers drastically reduced demand for the more-practical minivan. Instead, however, I’d like to suggest an alternate reason for the disappearance of so many minivan models in the last few years: What if the rise of crossover utilities simply revealed which vans weren’t up to the task, leaving behind the best of the breed? It’s not a far-fetched theory: go out minivan shopping today, and you’ll find just five models to choose from, two of which are sold in the same showrooms: the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country twins trace their roots back to the first minivans, introduced in 1983 and based on the then-ubiquitous K-Car. Built around a fantastic engine and smart design, these two are the segment’s value leaders. Honda has its Odyssey, notable for its tighter-than-expected handling and the availability of a brilliant built-in vacuum cleaner. At Toyota, the Sienna is a well-conceived vehicle that trades on that brand’s strong reliability. 12

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2016

That leaves Kia’s Sedona as the outlier: it’s the newest nameplate of the bunch (the first Sedona was sold as a 2002 model) and the only one that hails from Korea, since Kia’s parent company, Hyundai, gave up after selling its Entourage from 2006 through 2009. Clearly, Kia recognizes the minivan’s boring-car stigma, choosing to market this third-generation 2016 Sedona to its North American audience as a multi-purpose vehicle, a label more commonly attached to people-movers sold in Europe. That notion is reinforced by how well Kia’s designers have masked the Sedona’s extra size compared to the Sorento, with which it shares many of its styling cues. This is a minivan, but Kia really doesn’t want you to think so at first glance. It’s the Sedona’s interior that gives it away: a three-place third row usable by adults is a big advantage over the rearmost seating offered in the smaller Sorento, and our SXL tester had second-row reclining captain’s chairs that move side-to-side to allow easier access to the back row. Even with the third row in place, there’s a notable

Chris Chase

2016 Kia Sedona

amount of cargo space available behind it. Not enough for seven passengers’ worth of luggage for a road trip, mind you, but certainly plenty for a trip to the grocery store. Less appealing is how those heavy second-row seats have to be removed--a two-person job--if you want to turn your Sedona into a cargo hauler for a day. Unlike the Grand Caravan, there’s no option for second-row seats that easily fold into the floor and out of the way. Sedona gets its motivation from a 3.3-litre V6 engine that generates 276 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s a smooth powertrain that moves this van along nicely, but without the crispness the Odyssey is known for, a theme carries through to the rest of the Kia’s driving experience. It’s a comfortable van that’s very pleasant to drive, but if you’re at all resentful of the need for a vehicle this large, you may find yourself wishing for something that drives with more personality: even the Sienna, with a feel very similar to the Camry sedan, is a more engaging vehicle for drivers, thanks to a suspension that works harder at keeping the chassis planted over rough roads. Not even a driver-selectable power steering system does much to improve the feel from behind the Kia’s wheel. None of this is necessarily a slight against the Sedona, but rather proof that there are different strokes for various folks, even in such a pragmatic vehicle segment. For reasons we can’t figure out, the Sedona’s fuel consumption estimates vary widely depending on which trim level you look at: the SX is the thriftiest at 12.9/9.5 L/100 km (city/highway), and the base LX uses nominally more fuel. By the time you get to the SXL model I tested, however, the ratings have risen to 14.2/10.5, putting this van

well above the class average. Then consider that my tester averaged 15.1 L/100 km in city driving, making it less efficient in real-world use than a Sorento crossover I tested not long after, despite the added weight and friction of that crossover’s all-wheel drive system. If you can get around that, Sedona’s top-end SXL model is a lovely vehicle, with an interior trimmed in two-tone leather, boasting a heated steering wheel for cold weather and ventilated front seats for hot summer days. There’s also a dual sunroof setup unique in that both panes of glass tilt and slide, so that rear-seat passengers can also enjoy the open-air experience. Other notable SXL features include navigation, three-zone automatic climate control, a 360-degree parking camera system, lane departure warning, and frontal collision warning. Kia is known for packing its vehicles full of features at surprisingly low prices, but even here, you still only get what you pay for: a Sedona decked out in SXL goes for more than $46,000. That’s not out of line with its competitors, and in fact for that money it comes with more kit than similarly-priced versions of the Odyssey and Sienna. There’s no denying the Dodge and Chrysler vans are the true value leaders in the field though, once you factor in that company’s aggressive incentives. Objectively speaking, the Sedona is not the best minivan out there, but we get the feeling that doesn’t matter to Kia. What does count is this company’s well-conceived effort to transform the minivan from a family workhorse into a stylish, luxury transportation machine. If you’re smitten with a van’s unbeatable practicality but are leery of this segment’s oh-so-vanilla reputation, Kia’s latest Sedona could be just the vehicle for you. JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2016

BMW M3 VS MERCEDES AMG C63

My BMW M3

vs

my Mercedes-Benz AMG c63 Aman Sundher

or many years I’ve been spoon-fed the hype that the BMW M3 is for purists and the Mercedes-Benz C63 is for hooligans. The M3 has always been portrayed as the “gentleman’s race car”. Posting faster lap times around the Nurburgring, comfortable when it needed to be, and with a true 6-speed manual transmission, the M3 seems to have it all. At least that’s what I thought. Earlier this year, I purchased a low mileage 2008 BMW M3 4 door in black. What a gorgeous car! I spent hours admiring it: beautiful lines, black trim, dark wheels, and the hood bulge emphasized the M3’s classy, yet masculine styling. The interior was elegant, but simple. Everything was laid out in typical BMW fashion, with the traditional orange radio display and stainless dash panel insert. The driving position was perfect, the gearshift felt amazing, and the thick M steering wheel didn’t disappoint. However, the quality of the plastic trim did. The buttons around the gearshift were loose and fragile and the steering wheel adjustment lever broke off in the first week. Regardless, I bought this car for the drive, so let’s get to it. At the first opportunity, I took the car out for a shakedown run to Squamish. Right away I noticed the wonderfully heavy and direct steering wheel feel. As the car warmed up, I hit the sport button and turned traction control off. Rolling in 3rd gear at 2500rpm, I put my foot to the floor…and nothing?! The rev’s climbed slowly to 5500rpm and then all of a sudden, someone hit the “on” switch and the car burst into life. From 5500rpm to 8200rpm, the M3 is an absolute maniac and an utter joy to drive on the ragged edge up and down the Sea to Sky Highway. Unfortunately, driving around at anything below 5500rpm and you may as well be driving a Corolla. In town, the car was frustratingly slow and revving the engine over 5500rpm at 40-60kph is pretty embarrassing. The more I drove the M3, the more I found myself critiquing everything about it. From the way small bumps in the road shattering my spine, to the clutch dampening system that changed the friction point every time you pressed the clutch pedal. Every single person I let drive the car stalled it at least twice, thanks to that infuriating feature. My entire perception of the BMW M3 has been crushed. A month later, I happened to drive by a Mercedes dealership and saw a white 2012 Mercedes Benz C63 sitting out front in the display. The aggressive stance, massive brake calipers, hood ridges and quad pipes gave the C63 a menacing profile. I couldn’t help but take it for a test drive. Within just three blocks, I was sold on the car. The interior is on a completely different level. Plush leather, heavily bolstered sport seats and the best dash layout I’d seen in a long time. Every vent, switch and button has a nice heavy tactile feel to it. The back seats had a significant amount of leg room as well. I can now fit a 6’1 adult in the back seat as opposed an adult with no legs in 18

the M3. That being said, the interior isn’t perfect. The auto wipers turn on whenever they want to, regardless of the weather. And the Bluetooth audio reception doesn’t work if the phone is in your pocket, which seems a bit redundant. But all these nuances didn’t matter once I drove the car. As soon as you push the start button, the C63 engine roars to life. The cold start exhaust note on the car is absolutely electric. It’s the kind of sound that gives goosebumps to car enthusiasts and race car drivers alike. Driving around in comfort mode is exactly that, comfortable. It’s quiet and refined, but still very intimidating. The C63 devours highways with ease, and if you’re not careful, you’ll quickly find yourself with an excessive speeding ticket. It’s not uncommon to be well over the speed limit without even noticing it. Put the C63 into Sport mode and S+ or M and you’ve quite literally unleashed the beast. The exhaust takes on a snarling popping tone with flames

bursting out the tailpipes on the over run. The car surges forward with the slightest press of the accelerator and hits the rev limiter in the blink of an eye. The only words I can think of to describe the experience is race-car like exhilaration. Turn the traction control off and you will obliterate your tires, literally and figuratively. It was the most fun I’ve had in a long time and the tires probably had it coming. The torque seems like it peaks at idle, and never stops. It doesn’t matter what mode you are in, when you leave a stop light, there is always more than enough power to put a smile on your face and kick the back end out. I’ve owned over 20 cars in my life, everything from classic muscle cars to Porsches. I have always been a little biased towards BMW and one of my favorite cars of all time was my 1991 BMW M5. That being said, what Mercedes has done here has completely changed my perception of what a German Saloon can be. The C63 is the perfect blend of power, luxury and style. I’ve owned one for 6 months now, and it’s just as exciting to me now as it was when I first drove it. I guarantee this car will put a smile on your face.

INVESTMENT INTEREST DEDUCTIBILITY BEWARE OF ATTRIBUTION invyS kIqI hoeI DnrwSI dy ivAwj nMU k`Fxw – AiDkwr qoN swvDwn

s we head into the traditional RRSP and investment season, you should have a good chat with your accountant about a certain set of tax rules called the Spousal Attribution Rules. This past Holiday season I spent time with some new clients, a lovely couple who we shall call John and Mandy, going over their personal income tax returns and the denial of interest deductibility on funds loaned to purchase qualifying investments by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The issue, was that John had been reassessed by the CRA and was not able to claim the interest on the funds used from his line of credit to purchase qualifying investments. In the past, John would normally contribute to Mandy’s RRSP through spousal contributions, once these were maxed out he would purchase additional investments for her in a regular account. John had traditionally been the sole income earner in the household and wanted to register investments under Mandy’s name so that any future capital gains or income generated would be taxable under her name as she was in a much lower tax bracket. In the last two years, taking advantage of the low interest rates, he had taken out loans from their joint line-of-credit secured by their house to purchase additional investments and placed them under Mandy’s name. For simplicity sake, normally you are allowed to deduct the interest incurred on funds borrowed on investments purchased with the intent to earn income from these investments. However, in John and Mandy’s case, John had purchased investments for Mandy under a joint line-of credit secured by their house and deducted the associated interest on his tax return. This is where the Spousal Attribution Rules come into play. The Spousal Attribution Rules very simply “attribute” taxable income earned by a spouse back to the spouse who gave the funds to use for the purchase of income producing investments or property. In this case a joint line-of-credit was secured by John and Mandy’s home as collateral, and John provided the guarantee to repay all or part of the line-of-credit should a default happen. If such a guarantee is provided, 20

In Your Corner the Income Tax Act deems the loan was made to the borrower (Mandy) from the person offering the guarantee (John), which means that the attribution rules will kick in. With these rules, any future income or capital gains from the investments would be attributed back to John even though they are in Mandy’s name. To add further pain, John cannot claim the interest deduction as legally the shares are under Mandy’s name. There are exceptions to the general rule above where the interest would be deductible by Mandy, unfortunately in her case there would be no benefit as she has no taxable income. To make matters worse there would never be any interest deductibility for John in this type of arrangement and he would still be attributed and taxed on the additional income from the investments in Mandy’s name. Sitting down with John and Mandy in late December they were shocked to find out that the interest was not eligible to be deducted in John’s name and that any income realized was to be taxed under John, resulting in a hefty tax bill. John mentioned to me that he had gained this advice from his financial advisor and that the majority of his friends were utilizing the same strategy. I explained that unfortunately a good number of individuals and advisors who were using these methods had not yet been scrutinized by the CRA and normally would not be aware of the Attribution Rules as they are not general knowledge. When considering the use of joint lines of credit or equity from a mortgage for investment purposes, it is a good idea to consult a designated tax professional to ensure that your investments and objectives align with the Income Tax Act. If you are currently participating in this type of arrangement, be proactive and keep detailed records to prove borrowing and repayment histories and seek the advice of a tax professional before it’s too late.

Eating with Pash-ion

EATING WITH PASH-ION

When I was invited by a friend to eat in Fort Langley, he couldn’t remember the name of the restaurant. I did an online search and knew when I opened the webpage for Eighteen 27 that this must be the place. My friend has higher tastes, and the photos showed an elegant tapas and martini bar. We arrived and were given a very cozy booth, which was good on this cold and foggy fall night. The fabric in the booth was like alligator skin and there were some nice paintings on the walls. The decor was quite lovely and makes a romantic setting for a date. We were there on a Thursday evening and there was a singer and guitar player. The guitar was acoustic and the artist did a fantastic job of playing Metallica, Aerosmith, AC DC and Motley Crue. We had a great time enjoying the music, which is a staple on the weekends. My friend ordered a martini, which he liked, but as a non-drinker, even I noticed the glass was half empty, not half full. I’ve never seen such a small drink poured before. I would recommend ordering a double. Our first dish was the Truffled Wild Mushroom Gnocchi. I made the mistake of eating a gnocchi on its own and it was flavourless. All the seasoning was on the mushrooms. Make sure you eat both

the gnocchi and mushrooms all in one bite to get the seasoning right. My friend and I both enjoyed the dish and found it fun to share the food. Next we ordered the Spicy Marinated Vindaloo Prawns. We requested all the food come out one at a time with plenty of time in between. The prawn were quite tasty: not over cooked and just the right amount of Indian spice in the sauce. The naan bread it was served with came obviously from a bag and not from a hot tandoori oven, but this is not an Indian restaurant, so it was acceptable. We really enjoyed the next dish, which was the Candied Pecan Crusted Baked Brie. It had a cranberry salsa and a touch of cinnamon which made it a perfect festive food for the holidays. It was cheesy and warm and great to spread on the toasted baguette it was served with. Our last dish I must say was a disappointment. The Cinnamon and Chili Rubbed Sirloin Steak was so foul that my friend took one bite and refused to take another. The steak was over cooked and very dry, and cinnamon just doesn’t belong on a steak. The flavour combination was not good at all. But the Peppered Pomme Frites piled high in the middle of the plate served as a good distraction on how awful the steak was. On the website, they rave about how good this steak is, but I would never order it again, except to eat the pomme frites. We ended with a slice of New York Cheesecake which wasn’t worth writing home about. It was served with some berry sauce. It was lighter than a proper New York cheesecake usually is and needed more cream cheese. This was just cheesecake and did not deserve the title of the more decadent New York cheesecake. For a romantic, or fun, night on the town with friends, I would recommend Eighteen 27. If going on a weekend, make sure to reserve a good table so you can see the band. There is only street parking in downtown Fort Langley where they are located, so be sure to leave enough time to park and walk. I’m looking forward to going again in the summer when Fort Langley is alive with tourists and classic cars. JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2016

PROTECT OUR COMING GENERATIONS

I

remember in my younger years traveling all around the Lower Mainland on a daily basis in our late model import. My sister, brother, and I used to sit in the back seat while our parents sat in the front. Nothing abnormal right? It would surprise most people today that back then, hardly anybody wore seatbelts or used child seats. Maybe it was because people drove more carefully, speed limits were obeyed, and there were less distractions. Today, even though child car seats are the law, the number of parents who allow their young children to travel in cars without the use of proper child safety restraints is unacceptable. Of all children killed in motor vehicles accidents, about 30% were unrestrained, with the remaining deaths resulting from improper use of a restraint or seat belt. Most of these needless deaths are preventable. Child seats come in three categories: rear-facing for infants; forward-facing, five-point restraints; and booster seat. Using each of these three systems properly will ensure the maximum safety for your precious little ones. Infants should be placed in rearfacing seats until they are 2 years of age AND at least 20 pounds. Even though some infants may become finicky, keep them rear-facing until the recommended time. I kept my daughters in rear-facing seats until they were almost 3 years of age. The next stage is the forward facing seat and children should be kept in these until they are at least 4 years of age AND 40 pounds. The final stage is the booster seat, which holds children up to 8 years of age or 80 pounds or 4’9”. Remember that these are only guidelines, but err on the side of caution. Buy new child seats from a Canadian retailer (US seats do NOT qualify) and do not use an expired car seat. Also, keep children in the back seat until they reach the age of 13, when they can travel in the front seat. Children are our most valuable asset. It is more important to spend the extra time and keep them buckled properly rather than take a chance, even for short trips around the block. 24

2016 Buick Regal GS AWD

2016 Toyota Tacoma

T

oyota trucks have always been known to be able to take a beating and keep on ticking, or moving if you must. For 2016, the refreshed Tacoma wears a new skin and has an interior that is second to none in this competitive class. On the outside, the Tacoma looks bulkier than before, but don’t let that fool you as it hasn’t grown much in height or width. The front end now has new projector headlamps and depending on the package, LED lights are available. Inside the Tacoma, you’ll be amazed at the changes. Taking notes from its bigger brother, the Tundra, the cabin is very well done. The biggest change, however, with the Tacoma is new power plant; a base four-cylinder is available, but a more powerful 3.5L V6 replaces the outgoing 4.0L. Using the Atkinson cycle on demand, fuel efficiency ratings are pretty good. In my initial drive of the Tacoma, the truck felt familiar, but more improved and refined. The cabin is much quieter as well. Offroad tests will be done in my extended drive, but for now, I’m giving this one a thumbs up!

A

nytime I think of Buick, either I think of the Corvette-stomping Grand National, OR, a senior’s ride of choice – two polar opposites. Using some creative advertising on TV, the brand has tried to reach the younger generation, but still isn’t making a huge impact. Now, take away the Buick emblems and the Regal is a nice piece of work, and perhaps worthy of the sticker tag. Styling wise, the GS AWD is a great looking car, especially from a rear vantage point. The base 2.4L motor is decent, but go for the 2.0L turbocharged and you won’t be disappointed. Fuel economy could be better, but remember that it is AWD, which is great for year-round driving. The six-speed automatic is standard on all trims, unless you get the GS, which offers a six-speed manual, but then you lose the AWD. The cabin of this Buick is filled with technology and gadgets that compare to premium luxury German brands. The drive of the GS is smooth and engine response is quite good and thus, I would highly choose this trim. My opinion is forego the base model and get the GS AWD.

2016 Honda Civic

C

an the Civic retain its title as Canada’s best selling car for 18 years? If initial sales projections are any indication, then yep is the answer. The 10th generation Civic has pretty much everything changed between the bumpers, and we mean almost everything. The car is now bigger, sharper (from every angle), and more powerful. Under the hood, Honda is rolling out a new 1.5L turbocharged engine, which will make 174 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque; of course, the base 2.0L is still available and it, too, has been reworked. Both engines are great for the average commuter, providing great fuel economy, and if you want some more oomph, then the “Si” is the answer. Inside, the Civic drops the old twotier gauge cluster for an Acura-ish, almost digital look, making it much easier to read. The seats are slightly more comfortable and now, rear passengers can enjoy heated seats as well. The Civic is becoming “smart” with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrated for the driver, a must these days. And the drive, well, how can you go wrong? After all, it’s a Honda. 26

2015 BMW S1000RR

E

ven though this is a 2015 model, the BMW S1000RR deserves a noteworthy mention in this issue because, well, it just does – it’s one hell of a bike. Now into its 3rd generation, the bike’s flyline is razor sharp, with modifications done to the windshield, rear section, and almost every trim component. The result is a bike that’s 4kg lighter than before. The new engine delivers 199 hp, that’s 6 more than its predecessor, and let me tell you, it’s lightning quick. If you really want to ride like a pro, then Shift Assistant Pro allows you to shift without the clutch. To handle the power of the bike, matched with the most aggressive rider, the S1000RR has optimized the electronic suspension in almost every way. This is most notable when screaming out of a corner and the rear end still grips the road. I cannot understate the acceleration of this bike – punch it and hold on for dear life because, as a fellow journalist mentioned, it feels like you’re in a fighter jet. Built for the track but great for everyday riding, the S1000RR is a blast.

and comfortable interior seating experience. If you’re going on a lengthy drive such as a road trip, the back seat is snug and may present a hindrance if adults are seated in the back. For a family like ours, where we have three young girls, this was not a problem. THE DRIVE: After getting over the sheet beauty of the vehicle, we knew we had to drive it. Even when we attended the A3 launch event in Vancouver late last year, this was one vehicle that many journalists were waiting to get their hands on. One of the most immediately noticeable aspects is the lightweight nature of the S3, despite the fact that it weighs a hefty 3,449 pounds. You honestly cannot tell that the car is this heavy. Matched with a great engine and lightning quick steering, you can throw the S3 into almost any obstacle course and it will shine. With its low profile tires, the ride isn’t as smooth as I would like as a daily commuter, but you get used to it pretty quickly. Under the Dynamic setting, the suspension makes the drive even a bit firmer, but the handling capabilities are even further enhanced. I took the S3 around an off-ramp and

this rocket showed almost no body roll. Coupled with the fact that this is a Quattro, you could do donuts safely in rain or snow, or even on pavement if you wanted to. The most enjoyable aspect of the vehicle wasn’t the driving (don’t get me wrong, I loved driving it), but more the ease of parking. In Vancouver, the parking spaces seem to be getting smaller and smaller. But with the S3, I had a luxury sports car that I could whip into a parking spot with full confidence. Like the Mini Cooper Countryman S, these are the kinds of practical vehicles that provide excellent driving experience matched with easy parking in downtown Vancouver. LAST WORDS: I thoroughly enjoyed my week with the S3. While maintaining an elegant style, this vehicle provides all the thrills one would have expected. Overall, the Audi S3 is a progressive, performancebased and technologically advanced sports sedan, fully equipped with an advanced all-wheel drive system and a great engine. As I was telling my husband, this could very well be my next car! JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2016

Better Sound Quality

PYktrI hY~f XUint rwhIN vDIAw iksm dI Avwz

T

oday’s newer vehicles now come with an impressive array of standard and available features when it comes to creature comforts. Factory stereos now have available features like Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to play digital media (USB drives & phone connectivity) and some even have factory backup cameras. Manufacturers have definitely been paying attention to what the after-market is providing for solutions, and rightfully so. The after-market is the test bench, to see which innovative products driver consumer demand. Screens, back up cameras, USB and Bluetooth connectivity and even “premium sound systems” would not be in today’s modern vehicles if the after-market did not prove their value. However vehicle manufacturing is a business and when it comes to audio quality, the best components and materials can’t be used in most run of the mill vehicles because it will drive the cost up too much for many consumers. So for the music enthusiast that wants more from their vehicle, while maintaining the factory head unit, the after-market has the answer. Many of today’s new vehicles have functions integrated into the factory head unit, i.e. climate controls and other vehicle information, so changing the head unit may not be an option. Or a customer may want to have a “stealth audio system” and drawing attention to a fancy new head unit is not the goal. The first task is obtaining signal from the factory sound system so the amplifiers have something to interpret. This can be accomplished by using a simple line output converter or a digital sound processor (Audio Control, Match, Alpine Electronics and JL Audio all have solutions available). It all depends on how much the customer has budgeted for the sound system and how good they want the system to sound. 32

Better Sound Quality Adding a new amplifier is the next step. Running an amplifier with sufficient power will give you the control you need to obtain more sound quality. Whether you keep the stock speakers in or run new ones, you’ll be happy that you bought an amp. My favourite type of amplifier I like to install for my customers, is installing a good quality 5 channel. It’s not much more money than a dedicated amp for just a sub, but you’ll be able to also amplify the speakers as well. This will give you a very balanced sounding system without breaking the bank. Changing out your speakers will really help gain more clarity from your system. If you’re not going to amplify them and just run off head unit power you should only run entry level after market speakers. The more expensive speaker are great but they require more power to run, so if you don’t run an amp, the entry level speakers will probably sound better in that particular application. Also adding sound deadening material (I.e. Dynamat) will help give the speakers a better foundation and reduce resonance, even if you don’t want to change out your speakers. To round off you stealth audio system, you’ll want a sub woofer. To get better sound quality you don’t have to go crazy. A single 8 inch or 10 inch sub woofer will do the trick. Adding a sub woofer helps add depth to your music because it can produce tones regular speakers can’t. Instruments like bass guitars and drums can’t really be heard without a sub woofer. JL Audio’s Stealthbox line up is a collection of vehicle specific enclosures with subs that are designed to sound great in your vehicle while taking up minimum space so you don’t lose practicality from your vehicle.

MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY SEARCHING FOR WAYS TO ADAPT TO LOW DOLLAR

C

anada’s motorcycle industry is facing headwinds from the low loonie as the sector gears up for an annual round of trade shows early in the new year. “If it’s at par, it’s good for the Canadian importer. But where it is now, you need to try to find every advantage you can,” says Bob Ramsay, president of the Toronto-based Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council. Canada’s dollar has fallen to 11-year lows this month, largely because of persistently weak oil prices, slow global economic growth and the comparative strength of the U.S. dollar against other currencies. Ramsay says the six big names of the motorcycle industry -- the iconic American brand Harley-Davidson, Japan’s Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Germany’s BMW -- compete globally and have strategies to cope with currency fluctuations. “You’re going to see a very interesting market in the new year because all companies are going to be trying to ensure that they can compete on price, but also on the quality of products.” Harley-Davidson, for instance, recently replaced a longtime distributor with a new Canadian subsidiary more closely integrated into the company’s global operations. Anoop Prakash, who heads the new subsidiary, says Wisconsin-based Harley-Davidson can use its global reach and currency hedging to offset the loonie’s increasingly weak buying power -- something its former distributor couldn’t do. “The last couple of years, the pricing has really been driven by the currency,” Prakash says. “With the start of the 2016 model year, when we took over in August, we did adjust pricing to be more competitive.” He says new riders generally begin with smaller, less expensive models that they can handle physically and financially and then move up over time

- a key to Harley-Davidson’s strategy. “With the new pricing and the new model year, we’ve really pivoted towards attainability,” Prakash says. “So we have seven motorcycle models today under $13,000 and we’re starting at $8,000. I think that demonstrates a great amount of accessibility to new riders and young riders wanting to grow the sport.” Ramsay says the Canadian industry has been successfully adapting to the 2008-09 recession, the more recent downturn in Western Canada and changing demographics. “For many, many years, the motorcycle industry was doing very, very well based on the baby boomers and them having more disposable income,” Ramsay says. “Now that the baby boomers are almost halfway through their retirement phases, that market is still strong but we need to expand and grow the market across all segments of the population.” He says women, traditionally a very small segment of the motorcycle community, now account for 12 to 15 per cent of all new buyers for motorcycles, mopeds and the like. Similarly, so-called millennials now in their 20s and 30s and “diverse” ethnic groups have been growing segments of the motorcycle industry’s customer base, he says. “We’re trying to reach out and find ways to encourage them to get on a motorcycle or a scooter, rather than an automobile,” Ramsay says. Prakash says motorcycles provide a “great avenue for self expression” and for meeting like-minded people. “And if you look at urban young adults, including women, it’s a little bit about mobility and being able to explore things on your own terms,” Prakash says. The Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council has seven shows scheduled across Canada in January and February.

2016 Mini Cooper JCW

2016

MINI COOPER

JCW T

here are not very cars that make an adult feel like a kid again; remember those childhood days when racing around a go-kart track was the highlight of the year? Heart thumping, pretending to be a full Formula 1 race car driver, burning around the track to win the championship trophy – aahh, great memories. Well, not too long ago, I had the chance to have that same silly childish grin on my face when I test drove the 2016 Mini Cooper JCW. This car may not be for everyone, but let me tell you, the improvements made to the engine, suspension, and interior are very welcomed and, really, make last year’s model blush. The Mini, first made in 1959 by the British Motor Company, was an economy car that was not only practical, but spacious, despite its puny size. The original, and its

predecessors, are considered British icons. Who can forget Mr. Bean driving around in his Mini? Or how about Austin Powers in his Union Jack schemed Mini? Even though the new Mini, with the brand being owned by BMW since 1994, is nothing like the original, it still carries some very familiar trademark characteristics. One of the most notable are the wheels, which continue to be pushed to the extreme corners of the vehicle. Another one, if examined closely, is the front grill; yes, it’s changed, but the heritage lines are still clearly visible. For 2016, the Mini Cooper is still a fun-looking pocket-sized car. As I alluded to before, the wheels are pushed to the four corners and it’s still quite low to the ground. At the front, the headlights aren’t as pronounced as before, yet have that “deer caught in a headlight” look. Our tester, the JCW adds more to the package. First, there’s the distinct badging that points out this isn’t the “S” – nope, it’s got much more oomph! Next is a styling and design package Jag Dhatt that doesn’t just look good, but adds function. jag@jgkmedia.ca For example, at the front, Mini now has the most

2016 Mini Cooper JCW aerodynamic nose design yet. On the sides, just above each wheel well is a small lip that gives better air flow, reducing drag. And the rear apron, according to Mini Canada, complete with a new diffuser and flaps, now reduce rear lift by about 30%. What all these exterior features add up to is a Mini that does everything it’s supposed to, but with a masculine look, especially when you see the bigger roof-mounted spoiler. Step inside the vehicle and digest again the name Mini. Here, however, what the designers of the car have done oh-so-beautifully is give the car its character, no matter what the size. Compared to the plastic-looking toggle switches and cheap feel from even a couple of years ago, the 2016 model has been pleasantly refreshed with much better materials. Even a friend, who adores his 2013 Countryman JCW, noticed the differences in interior quality, fit, and finish. The front seats are comfortable and yes, they’re power – arm power, that is. So as you guessed, no seat memory either. Window controls continue to be on the door panels, where they ought to be – I never liked when they were toggle-switch controlled on the center console. The speedo and tach are now better placed right behind the steering wheel, leaving the valuable real estate to the HD colour touch screen that houses the MINI Connected infotainment system. Speaking of real estate, the back seats are incredibly small – Mini says that two small adults or children can sit in the rear seats but I disagree. With me sitting in a somewhat comfortable seating position in the driver’s seat, my 8-year old daughter barely had enough room in the rear seat. A more viable Mini option, for a family like mine, would be the Clubman or the Countryman. If you’re not stuck to the Mini brand, then try the Golf GTI or Ford Focus ST as well. Now that we’ve talked about the upgrades to the interior fit and finish, let’s get to the real meat of it. There’s nothing Mini about the engine, which pumps out 231 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque – 25% more power than the outgoing model and when you’re talking numbers like that for a small car, you can really feel the difference. I was really hoping for the 6-speed manual but alas, our tester was fitted with the $1,650 automatic, which does the job, but takes away from some of the excitement. Mini did a good job of making the automatic quite good, especially when you put the Dynamic Damper Control system to sport and use the paddle shifters. The cherry on top is that beautiful sound, thanks to a low backpressure exhaust system. So many times, I would downshift just to hear the exhaust – take that Mini S, sans JCW package. This puppy really does fly but with the Brembo brake package, the Mini JCW stops on a dime. The Mini JCW is an excellent urban car because let’s face it, you don’t need or want much space when parking. Fuel consumption is also very good and if you want to maximize this element, then drive the car in Eco mode – but really, WHY? I mean, you’ve got the JCW package and in my opinion, the Eco mode doesn’t even need to be there. In the city, this car was fun to drive in a straight line, off a red light; but let’s face it, it shines on twisty, windy roads. I mean, would you drive a go-kart in a straight line? For those of you who know Vancouver streets, you’ll be happy to know that the new suspension on this car makes the ride much more comfortable. In previous years, if you drove a Mini on our rough streets, you better have had a good dental plan. Now, however, the ride is much much better. The tires on our tester were run-flats, and if I owned this car, I’d swap them out for non-runflats in a jiffy. The Mini JCW does have some shortcomings, the biggest being the sticker price. You can get into a Ford Focus ST or a Volkswagen GTI (or R) for less money and these are great cars as well. But if you need to get your heart racing in one of the most iconic British sports car, this may be your cup of tea. JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2016

n Thursday, December 10, OpenRoad Richmond Lexus hosted 200 of our loyal RX guests to a night of holiday festivities and to warmly welcome the 2016 RX into our showroom. The unveiling of this vehicle has been long awaited and our guests weren’t disappointed. Guests were also treated to some of our favourite holiday treats and cocktails from our favourite “Cocktails and Canapes”. The new fourth-generation Lexus RX rewrites the rules on luxury SUV’s. Staying true to the Lexus way of style, class, performance and reliability, the brand again materializes why the Lexus RX was the first of its kind in a luxury SUV. The fully redesigned exterior complete with the new panoramic sunroof option is truly in a league of its own. This vehicle exudes luxury, but certainly doesn’t miss out on features and performance. Some new features that now come standard include a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, LED head and brake lamps, blind spot monitor, and rear cross traffic alert. Not only has the exterior been given a whole new redesign that gives an aggressive bold look in the road, the interior will leave you speechless. The look and feel of the hand-stitched dash and exquisite craftsmanship will remind you you’re not just in any SUV. The 2016 RX is equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine that unleashes increased output. Now even more focused on your driving pleasure and robust power, Lexus has also redefined their noise reduction, road noise, vibration and bump suppression. Not only advancing performance and style, the 2016 RX also advances in technology, including touch-free back door. Anticipating your needs before you start your car, the rear hands free door comes open simply by pressing your arm over the Lexus badge. Audio/Visual is enhanced with a 12-speaker 8 inch display incorporating auto sound Levelizer (ASL) and integrated XM Satellite radio. Guests to the RX launch enjoyed the great food and had the opportunity to get an up-close look at the new RX. We would like to thank all those who attended and have a great 2016.

ONTARIO SPENDS $20M TO BUILD ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS

O

ntario’s Liberal government will hand out $20 million in grants next year to help create a network of public charging stations for electric vehicles. The province wants public and private sector partners to build fast-charging electric vehicle stations in cities, along highways and at workplaces, apartments and condominiums, said Premier Kathleen Wynne. “This program is part of Ontario’s new, $325-million green investment fund,” Wynne announced Tuesday at the climate change talks in Paris. “We know that for electric vehicles to take off in Ontario there has to be the infrastructure in place.” Wynne said Ontarians want to take part in the fight to reduce the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. “There is a real concern about climate change, but that concern can’t be allowed to just be passive. There has to be a way for people to take action,” she said. “With personal vehicle emissions representing a sizable portion of Ontario’s greenhouse gas emissions, driving electric vehicles is a tangible way for people to make a difference.” Shifting to low- or zero-emission vehicles is vital to reaching Ontario’s “ambitious” greenhouse gas reduction goal of 80 per cent

‘‘

Funding will come from the province’s new, $325M green investment fund

of 1990 levels by 2050, added Wynne. “It’s why we have rebates and incentives for people who purchase EVs, and why we’re making it easier to cruise around in an electric vehicle with today’s announcement,” she said. Rebates for electric car buyers Ontario provides rebates of up to $9,500 for people who buy electric vehicles, and also offers rebates for installing EV charging stations at home. The new program is for the next generation of chargers, known as level 3, which cost up to $40,000 and can power a car back up to 80 or 90 per cent of its capacity in under a half hour, said Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca. “One of the challenges is that people have what we call ‘range anxiety,”’ he said. “They’re not in a position to feel comfortable that they can drive certain distances and know that they’ll have an easy and affordable way of refuelling.” People and companies that want to set up EV charging stations will have to apply to the government for funding, which will be doled out on a first-come, first-served basis said Environment Minister Glen Murray.
