DRK Editorial

Editor’s Note

Jag Dhatt Editor-in-Chief

W

ith January 2017 already here, it’s amazing how quickly 2016 flew by. It seems like yesterday that it was only mid-2016. However, with every new year comes new beginnings, and boy, are there a lot of new things happening in the automotive and motorsport industries. The biggest craze is automation and 2017 will prove to be a year where new innovations will make their appearance. Google has already been toying with self-driving cars, but other companies, such as Tesla and Apple are also jumping on the bandwagon. Driver assistance packages are becoming the norm as well, with things like Lane Departure and Automatic Braking becoming standard on many models. It seems like a car like KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) from Knight Rider may be here sooner than later. Staying closer to today, the staff at DRK Magazine and www. rackandopinion.ca have been busy attending many launch events. We were one of the first media to drive the new Honda Civic and CR-V, Lexus IS, Nissan Titan, and the Toyota TRD Pro series just to name a few. Beginning in Spring 2017, we shall be adding video to our already established print media. I am also pleased to announce that beginning with the next issue, we are launching our new “Little Perspectives” portion in this magazine. Two of my daughters, Simran and Jeevan Dhatt, will provide readers with their “Little Perspectives” about the various press vehicles we drive. We are hopeful you will find their perspectives and opinions valuable. In this issue, we introduce you to the all new Honda Civic Hatchback and CR-V, two vehicles I’m very impressed with. Chris looks at the Nissan Titan while Aman reviews the Ford Escape. Finally, Benjamin gives his summary of TestFest 2017. We appreciate your continued support – like our Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/DRK-Desi Road Kings. Also follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Yokohama Tire Names Jean-Sebastien Sauriol Brand Ambassador

A Kawasaki Electric Motorcycle?

L

angley, B.C. – Yokohama Tire (Canada) Inc. is pleased to announce that professional racing driver and longtime driving instructor Jean-Sebastien Sauriol will be representing Yokohama Canada as a brand ambassador. “We are excited for the opportunity to showcase our products in collaboration with someone like Jean-Sebastien, who has unique international motorsport background and expertise,” says Diana Colosimo, Brand Development Manager for Yokohama Tire (Canada) Inc. “This partnership allows us to reach existing and potential clients throughout Canada, and drive home awareness of our leading-edge performance tires via events such as driving-instruction programs and dealership events.” “I am very proud and honoured to be partnering up with a prestigious company such as Yokohama Tire Canada,” says Sauriol, founder of the Ice Driving Canada winter driving academy. “Being personally involved in motorsport for a long time, including three years in Japan as a driver, I have always been a fan of Yokohama products, which are synonymous with high quality, performance and second-to-none engineering. I am looking forward to helping promote the Yokohama Tire brand across the country for many years to come.”

lthough there’s been no confirmation from the manufacturer as of yet, pictures circulating on the Internet show plans for an electric drivetrain, motor, and cooling system on a “Kawasaki” motorcycle. Let’s be clear here – there’s no mention of the brand or a source of the pictures, Kawasaki has long-reaching business ventures and an electric motorcycle would fall into these plans. This is not the first time that Kawasaki has tinkered with a project like this; the Ninja 300 electric commuter was also rumoured. Only Harley Davidson’s Project Livewire has shown some serious notion towards a production-ready electric motorcycle. We hope that the drawings on the Web are real.

Dilawri and OpenRoad Partner to Build New Flagship Porsche Centre in Richmond, British Columbia

V

ancouver, B.C. – The Dilawri Group of Companies and OpenRoad Auto Group are proud to announce a new partnership to build and operate a flagship Porsche Centre in the Richmond Auto Mall. Construction of the new stateof-the-art dealership is set to start in 2018, with plans for completion in 2019. “This is an excellent opportunity to provide our customers with greater access to the extraordinary Porsche line,” said Ajay Dilawri, President of the Dilawri Group of Companies. “We are excited to partner with OpenRoad in this new venture. We share core values and we both believe in providing exceptional customer service.” While this joint venture is new, it will be the second Porsche dealership for each company. OpenRoad opened Porsche Centre Langley in the Langley Auto Collection in 2015, while Dilawri acquired Porsche Centre Vancouver in 2010 and opened its present day location in 2013. “Given our success with Porsche Centre Langley and the many

brands we already represent in Richmond, we’re confident that there’s tremendous growth potential for Porsche in this new market,” said Christian Chia, President & CEO of OpenRoad Auto Group. “We’re delighted to collaborate with the Dilawri Group to combine our deep commitment to Porsche and our thorough knowledge of the market to bring this exciting project to fruition.” The multi-million dollar project will be one of Canada’s largest Porsche dealerships and will feature Porsche’s infamous curved building design, in addition to the latest in customer amenities and the most advanced sales and service technology. The building design will also accommodate a full range of new electric vehicles that Porsche plans to roll out over the next several years. The new dealership will staff approximately 40 employees in the areas of sales, service, management and administration.

V

ictoria, BC: There’s something to be said when a manufacturer wears the crown in FOUR different segments, and Honda isn’t shy to share this information. The company’s winning titles include:

#1 Compact Car – Civic #1 Midsize Car – Accord # 1 Subcompact SUV – HR-V #1 Premium Minivan – Honda Odyssey

Only the compact SUV segment title has evaded the manufacturer, with the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape ahead by narrow margins. However, Honda wasn’t about to step away from this fight, so they sharpened their pencils and went to work. And for 2017, they just may have another title. We were invited to beautiful Oak Bay on Vancouver Island to be one of the first to drive the all-new, yes, we mean ALL-NEW, Honda CR-V and boy, were we in for a treat. One of the first questions everyone asks is, “How did the RAV4 and Ford Escape beat Honda’s charm and engineering in the segment?” Well, if you’ve owned the CR-V (and we have), you probably already know; even Honda brass are the first to admit it was a combination of conservative styling, lack lustre performance, and a plain cabin. So, has the 2017 CR-V upped its game? In one word – YOU BET…well, it’s two words, but you get the point. Upgraded Looks In all honesty, I was never a fan of most of the previous generations’ styling. As a guy, it just didn’t do it for me and took away any macho factor I had when driving our own 2005 model. My wife, however, never seemed to mind. One look at the new CR-V sends a clear message that Honda’s design team did some amazing work that is on par or better than RAV4, Mazda CX-5, or Hyundai Tucson. The bland exterior has been replaced with a toned and aggressive look that goes head-to-head with anything else in this category. New for 2017 are stronger fender flares that accentuate the larger, wider body. Standard 17” wheels nicely fill the fenders; the wheels, however, could have been nicer. All around, Honda has added LED lighting and this includes the signature LED daytime running lights, and LED brake, tail and turn signals. If you opt for the Touring model, you’ll get LED headlamps as well. Other improvements, that you probably won’t notice but are important for fuel economy, include the standard active grille shutters and a flatter underbody for better aerodynamics. 10

HONDA

CR-V

12

January / february 2017

Honda is using the word “beautility” to describe the interior of the 2017 CR-V. Although the word won’t make Webster’s dictionary just yet, it’s pretty darn accurate. This Honda model’s interior has typically been bland, but the moment I stepped inside the new CR-V, I was floored. I murmured something like, “This looks and feels like a premium vehicle – it doesn’t feel like a CR-V.” There’s a 3D aspect to the new interior and it works. The surface materials and decorative parts express dynamism and comfort. Our Touring test model came complete with “wood” inserts, leather stitching, and a great contrast of materials – soft, hard and lustrous. Honda vehicles have always had ample storage and this new CR-V only improves on something good. The center console has a nifty movable storage tray that can hold your cell phone or wallet. Under the storage is a massive bin that you can stuff your gloves, scarf, and even a handbag! All in all, the new interior is a huge upgrade and I, again, applaud the design team. Keeping with the inside, even though the outgoing models’ interior was quite roomy, the 2017 CR-V adds an additional 53mm of rear legroom, thanks to the wheelbase being stretched by 40mm. It might not seem like much, but trust me, two extra inches of rear legroom is a big deal, especially in the compact classes. Upgraded Safety & Technology In today’s modern, fast-moving world, you either keep up with the latest in technology and trends or get lost in the crowd, period. I’m surprised that some manufacturers are still making things like Bluetooth optional. But not to fret with the 2017 CR-V, as it’s poised to stay ahead. Let’s start with the safety basics – ABS, lots of airbags, etc…they’re all there. But now, Honda Sensing is standard on all AWD variations. This will include the Collision Mitigation System (CMS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow (LSF), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Lane Keeping (LKAS) Assist System, all of which work quite well. We did have to, at times, turn off the LKAS on windy roads because it was too sensitive and kept going off. Now, throw in the Cross-Traffic Monitor Alert and Driver Attention Monitor and you’ve got a grocery-getter and takethe-kids-to-practice hauler that’s going to keep its occupants safe. In keeping with the other new and refreshed Honda models, the new CR-V shares some pretty neat technology. All trims get a 7” touchscreen that is responsive but wait…what’s that on left of the screen? It can’t be! A volume control knob! Woo hoo! I know I may be making a big deal out of this small detail, but trust me, I was beginning to hate the finger slide volume control. Thanks Honda for listening to us and bringing back the knob. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported in the CR-V, but if you want the navigation system, you have to get the Touring trim. Some buyers may not like dishing out more cash for extras that come with the Touring trim, but I can attest that the add-ons are a tremendous value. Said Hayato Mori, Senior Manager of Product Planning and Business Development, “We believe that buyers of the Honda CR-V will get much more car for the value with many of the optional features now becoming standard on the various trims.” And I agree with Mr. Mori completely. Jag Dhatt For example, even on the base LX Accredited AJAC Journalist trim, you still get 17” alloy wheels,

proximity key entry with push button start, remote engine start, walk-away door locks, front wiper de-icer, automatic climate control, heated front seats, multi-angle rear-view camera, and active noise cancellation. As mentioned before, some of these were options in previous generations. And yes, Bluetooth connectivity is also standard. Upgraded Utility Even though the 2017 CR-V looks and feels premium, it still has to be practical. No, Honda hasn’t brought back the picnic table, but

engine noise. Speaking of the engine, it’s smaller than the outgoing one; don’t frown just yet though. For Canada, the CR-V gets a tweaked version of the 1.5-liter turbocharged DOHC four-cylinder motor that powers the Civic. Unlike the Civic, the CR-V gets 190HP and 179 lb-ft of torque through a CVT. This is more than both the RAV4 and the Escape. For our drive, the engine proved to be capable in most conditions. I will admit that are low rpm’s there is some turbo lag, but nothing to be overly concerned about. Honda claims that this

now there’s other cool stuff. First of all, a height adjustable power tailgate is standard on the EX-L and Touring trims. We tried the new tailgate and it’s pretty handy for people of various heights. If you’re carrying groceries, you can even activate the tailgate with a swipe of your foot under the centre of the rear bumper. Second, the cargo bay is now more versatile thanks to flat fold rear seats and two floor modes: full flat mode and max capacity mode. By configuring the floor to max capacity mode, 4 large hard suitcases can easily fit under the tonneau cover. The CR-V now has bragging rights to Bestin-Class space efficiency. Upgraded Driving and Performance It’s no secret that Vancouver Island boasts some of the best scenic driving routes in British Columbia and it’s here that we road tested the 2017 CR-V. From beautiful Oak Bay to Jordan River and then back through downtown Victoria, there was a great mix of highway, city, and twisty roads. One of the most significant improvements of the driving experience had nothing to do with the drive, but rather how quiet the cabin was. Our test vehicle was equipped with snow tires, which generally are known to be loud. But thanks to the standard Active Noise Cancellation, floating rear sub-frame, a flatter windshield, liquid sealing, and sound-insulating materials, the new CR-V is one of the quietest vehicles in this segment. We easily carried on a conversation or enjoyed music without impeding road, vehicle, or

new CR-V also has class-leading fuel economy and we concur. After our drive route, we averaged about 7.4 L/100 km. Ride quality has also been upgraded thanks to a new chassis that has some key features. In order to accommodate the larger footprint for a better ride, Honda has included fluid-filled suspension bushings, Macpherson strut front suspension, multi-link rear suspension, a more powerful braking system and of course, the larger wheels. All this new technology makes the new CR-V quite agile and, wait for it…somewhat fun to drive. The Real Time automatic AWD drive system is quite good; no, we didn’t have the chance to test it completely, but it would be on par with Subaru’s Symmetrical allwheel-drive system. When needed, 40% of maximum torque can be pushed to the rear wheels. During our drive throughout the Southern parts of Vancouver Island, I was thoroughly impressed with the new CR-V. Seating position and height for me were good – it’s now a vehicle capable of long trips with the family. This is not an enthusiast’s vehicle, but it does everything you need it to and then some. Final Thoughts Honda has always built vehicles that offer great engineering, value, and reliability; the new 2017 CR-V is no different. This builtin-Canada for Canadians is sure to make a hit, more-so now that many extra features are now standard. Pricing ranges from $29, 490 for the LX to $38, 090 for the top-end Touring.

NISSAN

Titan

P

ickup trucks have never been bigger: Not only do they remain some of Canada’s best-selling vehicles year after year, but full-size pickups are physically larger than ever. Nissan plays neatly into this trend with its big pickup model, the aptly-named Titan. This second-generation model debuted in 2016 as the Titan XD, a truck whose capabilities bridge the gap between light- and heavy-duty models. Titan’s 2017 follow-up is a true light-duty version that goes up against the likes of the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra. This latest Titan may not boast the robust towing and payload numbers of its XD sibling, but as we discovered, it’s still an imposing presence on the road. Regular-grade Titans miss out on the XD’s massive Cummins diesel, but benefit from an all-new version of Nissan’s 5.6-litre V8, which

16

January / february 2017

cranks out a still-impressive 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are near the top of the chart among full-size, light-duty trucks, but more important is what those figures do for the driving experience. In an unloaded Titan, the engine generates acceleration that, when combined with the truck’s very obvious mass, feels akin to that of a sports car. Big-budget car magazines have clocked the Titan’s zero-to-100 km/h acceleration around 6.5 seconds, an impressive figure indeed for a truck weighing nearly 2,600 kg. The engine (codenamed Endurance, by the way) gets most of the credit for that, but a seven-speed transmission -one more ratio than most competitors -- helps by doing better at keeping the engine in the broadest part of its power band. As many manufacturers move to replace V8s with turbocharged V6s in a nod to fuel economy, the pleasing rumble of this Nissan V8’s exhaust

note is a sound we don’t get to hear very often any more. Speaking of fuel economy, the Titan is estimated to use 15.2 L/100 km in city driving and 11.1 on the highway. Most of our time spent with the truck was on freeways, netting us average consumption of 12.0 L/100 km. More important than flat-out acceleration are the Titan’s maximum towing and payload ratings of 4,268 kg and 732 kg, respectively. The downside to that kind of capability is a stiff suspension that gets quite bouncy when the truck isn’t being put to work, and heavy steering means you’ll get your upper body exercise navigating crowded parking lots. Our Crew Cab model boasted plenty of space for four adults, but we still wished for more front-seat headroom. In the rear, a bottom seat cushion with more thigh support would be appreciated by long-legged passengers. A wide console means some secondary controls are a long reach for both driver and front passenger. While we liked how the rear seats fold up and out of the way for carrying larger cargo that’s best kept out of the elements, we were disappointed in the lack of any sort of step to ease access into the truck box. The side steps that made it easier to get in and out of the

cabin were part of a $7,600 option package that also added niceties like passive keyless entry, backup camera, blind spot warning, a trailer brake controller and extendable tow mirrors. Our tester started out as a $48,000 Crew Cab model in SV trim, but the Titan would be just as imposing in a lesser S-trimmed model. Maybe it was just us feeling like the king of the road in our elevated driving position, but it seemed as though other drivers were pretty eager to get out of the Titan’s way when they saw us in their rear views. Whatever the case, you can bet that imposing presence is what truck manufacturers are going for when building the massive trucks that have become such a common sight on Canadian roads. The Titan is a decent value and a strong competitor against more established truck models, but it’s not enough of a deal that Ford, GM and Ram need to worry about this redesigned Nissan threatening their pickup sales dominance. And when you consider the Titan lacks some of the thoughtful touches that make other trucks better companions as day-to-day work vehicles, it could be that Nissan’s latest full-size truck is only a Titan of the pickup segment in its own mind.

2018 Kia Stinger Makes World Debut at North American International Auto Show

A

t an event typically dominated by introductions from American auto companies, Kia Motors America (KMA) stole the spotlight with the world debut of the all-new 2018 Kia Stinger (hereafter Stinger) at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A five-passenger fastback sports sedan poised to redefine a segment currently populated by European automakers, the Stinger promises to be the highest-performance

production vehicle in the company’s history and is backed by Kia Motors’ industry-leading quality and reliability. Offered with multiple engine and drivetrain configurations and luxurious accommodations, the Stinger is planned to go on sale in Canada late this year. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch date. “Unlike any Kia that has come before it, the Stinger really is a dream car for us, and here today in Detroit, that dream is now a reality after years of commitment and hard work from a passionate group of designers, engineers and executives around the world,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning, Kia Motors America. “From its GT concept-car origins to the years of tuning and refining on the legendary Nurburgring circuit, no detail was too small to be obsessed over, and the result is simply stunning.” Instantly recognizable as a direct evolution of the concept that preceded it, the all-new 2018 Kia Stinger design was overseen by

20

January / february 2017

Peter Schreyer, Kia Motors’ chief design officer, and his talented team of designers in Frankfurt. Ride and handling development was looked after by Albert Biermann, head of Kia’s Vehicle Test and High Performance Development and his group of engineers in Korea and on the grueling Nurburgring racing circuit. But what makes a true gran turismo? This question was the foundation for a years-long journey that began when the GT concept was first unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Although every Kia design study has a purpose, the GT concept was something considered by many outside the company as little more than a dream for a brand known for producing mass-market transportation rooted in value. But the GT ignited embers of passion that sparked a fire within the organization and over the next five years that fire would grow beyond fantasy and morph into reality.

Once the Stinger was green lighted, that gran turismo question became a mantra as development commenced. Coming from Kia, the design had to be bold. And it was. But it also had to be nimble and fast while also luxurious and quiet. It had to achieve the perfect balance of ride and handling and seat five comfortably with room for luggage. It had to be a lot of things, but most of all, it had to be an authentic gran turismo. And it is.

Foods to Reach for to Prevent Colds and Flus

O

ne of the easiest ways to keep your immune system strong is eating healthy foods. To prevent you and your family from succumbing to cold and flu season, the Canadian Health Food Association recommends the following foods: Nuts: Whether you add them to your cereal and salads or have them as an afternoon snack, nuts are a good choice for supporting immune function. Cashews and pecans, for example, provide the perfect blend of immune-boosting nutrients, including protein, vitamin E and zinc; while Brazil nuts are high in selenium. Kimchi. The ancient tradition of fermented food has become increasingly popular in Canada — for good reason. This fermented cabbage dish from Korea is not only rich in vitamins C, E and A, carotenoids and antioxidant enzymes, it’s also a healthy whole-food source of probiotics, the good gut bacteria that keep your immune system in check. Kimchi can be an acquired taste, so if you’re not sure it’s for you, you may want to consider taking a probiotic supplement instead. Garlic. Over a third of Canadians say they consume garlic to stay healthy during cold and flu season. That’s because this member of the allium family is known to reduce cold symptoms and improve immune cell activity. Garlic is delicious in homemade salad dressings, dips or stir fries, but if you’re worried about bad breath, try an odourless supplement instead.

Mushrooms. The benefits of reishi mushroom extracts on the immune system are well documented. Available in supplement form, reishi mushrooms have been consumed for thousands of years in Asia as a tea. The process of hot water extraction releases beneficial carbohydrates and fibres that can increase the production of certain white blood cells to help identify and break down invading bugs. And there’s nothing more soothing than a hot cup of tea on a cold winter day. Visit chfa.ca to find your local CHFA Member health food store and stock up today. - News Canada

Big Feast Bistro + Retail 11920 227 Street Maple Ridge, BC V2X 8S5

I

had to do a collections visit. Welcome to the exciting world of leasing! I had a client on my leasing book that our collections department could not reach, so I decided to do a site visit in Maple Ridge. You don’t do site visits alone in collections. I called a friend who has an office in Mission to come join me. He got the fun job of making sure I wasn’t attacked by the violent children of the lessee. I promised a good lunch as long as everything was ok. My “heavy” waited outside my client’s business in his big tough Bentley and when I gave the thumbs up that all was ok, he went to go secure a table at Big Feast Bistro a few block away. My client’s phone had caught on fire and that’s why we couldn’t reach him, so all was well and i was hungry! My friend got to Big Feast Bistro and only managed to get a small table. The place was packed when I arrived and I was repulsed at the tiny table. We are both tall people and can’t it at such a cramped table and be comfortable. The first lunch sitting was clearing out, so after a few minutes we were able to move to a larger table. The bistro is small but well loved from all the people filling its seats. We looked over the lunch menu and also noticed the retail offerings surrounding us. You can buy soups, dip, sauces, spiced nuts and frozen meals to take home. The retail uses local ingredients , have no preservatives and are gluten free. They also offer discounts when multiple items are purchased. We decided on a lobster grilled cheese with soup and an apple bacon grilled cheese with yam hash. There’s a good selection of side dishes to choose from including different salads. We both chose the organic sourdough bread. We both took half of each sandwich and I noticed they were grilled with real butter. The bread was from local Hansel & Gretal Bakery and fresh and soft and chewy. I

didn’t taste the soup. It was gone. My friend inhaled it, so from that I’m guessing it was very good. The yam hash was flavorful, but it did lead to heartburn later. Both sandwiches were buttery and cooked to perfection, but I liked the lobster grilled cheese a bit better than the apple bacon. There was a wide variety of drinks offered including homemade lemonade. It was too cold outside for lemonade, but I will come back in summer to try it. They have homemade iced tea as well and a variety of organic juice and natural sodas. There were also sweet treats such as cookies and muffins to choose from. There is a children’s menu for kids under 10 years old. They offer a good variety of kid friendly food and it comes with an organic juice box, fruit salad and a cookie. The menu also offers burgers with hand-pressed premium beef from Hopcott Farms, stir fry, a curry rice bowl, ocean wise seafood, and even zucchini noodle pasta. There are a lot of gluten free options which are labelled and options to substitute a gluten free bun. I would like to come in again and try their famous breakfast or dinner. Breakfast has big lineups on weekends. They close at 8PM all week or 9PM on Friday or Saturday, so if you want to try dinner, get there early. It opens 8AM each day for breakfast. he Lexus IS (Innovative Sedan) is engineered for drivers who expect aggressive and authentic performance. Although it’s not a complete re-design, there are subtle changes to the body. Up front, the spindle grille has been tweaked and is flanked by prominent air intakes. Newly designed LED headlamps fuse effortlessly into an enhanced character line that runs the length of the silhouette that makes the sedan look likes it’s moving, even when standing still. Now available with 3 engine choices, there’s a car for every driver: the IS 200t with a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder; IS 300 with a 3.5-litre V6 and; the IS 350 V6 with even more power. We had the opportunity to drive all 3 variations of the Lexus IS on the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit and let me say this, you can really push this car. Standard driving modes enhance the driving experience. And, if you want even more, then go for the F Sport, which adds some great styling and driving upgrades. Thanks Lexus Canada for the track time on Vancouver Island!

had this vehicle during the heavy snow storms this winter in Vancouver, and boy was I glad. As many found the snow to be unnerving, I had complete confidence navigating through the city, with my loved ones on board, in the GLS450. Mercedes-Benz has always built artistic luxury vehicles that transcend time and the new GLS is no different. A bold new grille lets people know that this isn’t a docile machine. Under the hood, a base 362 HP bi-turbo V6 gives exceptional torque-rich response and amazing fuel efficiency. And of course, the 4MATIC keeps you planted on snow and ice. Inside, 3 rows of luxury seating are capable of wrapping around 7 occupants. There’s also 3-zone climate control and for those in the front, heated massage seats, which I used every single day! For a large vehicle, the GLS450 is quite nimble around town and a joy to drive. Parking was a breeze with lots of sensors and a surround-view camera. The only gripe I have with the GLS450 is the infotainment interface – it could be much more efficient.

hen the CX-3 made its debut in the subcompact SUV segment, everyone took notice. Just as with their other vehicles, the CX-3 was definitely going to be a great seller – why? Because it’s a great machine. The new KODO “Soul of Motion” design demonstrates that you don’t have to be over-sized to make a big impression. With great lines, well-balances proportions, and rich contours, the CX-3 looks great from any angle. For a subcompact, interior space is always a premium and yet, Mazda has managed to tweak out as much as possible. KODO interior design creates “ultimate athletic space” that links ergonomics with basic mechanical functions. Seating position and comfort are also top-notch in the CX-3, providing the driver with great viewing angles. One of Mazda’s strongest inventions has to be their SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, which is an innovative automotive engineering strategy that delivers superior fuel economy, enhanced safety, and lower emissions – all without giving up driving exhilaration. Even the large CX-9 provides amazing power from a 4-cylinder. It’s no wonder that the CX-3 has won as many awards as it has. 24

hen the BMW i concept was launched in 2007, it was an attempt to build vehicles from the ground up with sustainable mobility in mind and thus, the i3 wasn’t just built from a regular vehicle by exchanging a gas-powered engine into an electric one. The new 2017 i3 with Range Extender is quite a deceiving vehicle. It looks small and not too quick; however, looks can be deceiving. On the inside, the i3 is quite roomy, especially for front passengers. Ride position is amazing, with occupants sitting much higher than you would expect, and this gives the driver great outward visibility. For rear passengers, getting in and out is a little tight, with the rear doors being half-length; that being said, they do open to almost 90-degrees for easier entry and exit. But i3 is all about is the drive; if you have never driven an electric car, it’s quite the experience. There’s no engine noise and the engine itself also helps with the braking. If you’re in the market for an electric car, definitely give the i3 a look.

Winter Tires and Cautious Driving Most Effective for Improving Safety

E

ven though the technology used in vehicles today has come a long way towards increasing our safety on the road, experts say installing winter tires and driving with vigilance are still the most effective ways to improve safety in winter conditions. Jeff Voth, auto expert and editor of the auto news website exhausted.ca, says that drivers shouldn’t rely on modern car technology to avoid accidents in slippery conditions. Though antilock brakes, traction control systems and stability controls systems can assist us while driving in slippery conditions, your tires are the only part of the vehicle in direct contact with the road — making them the crucial thing that matters when roads are covered with slush, snow or ice. Hankook Tire feature newly developed tread technology in its new Winter i*cept iZ2 and Winter i*Pike RS models. They’re optimized for severe wintry road conditions for advanced snow and ice performance, explains Voth. Both tires are designed for driving in harsh winter conditions and offer excellent traction on snow and ice. The Winter i*cept iZ2 is designed to boost performance on severely slushy, snow-covered or icy roads, while the Winter i*Pike RS has a wide tread contact patch for better braking on ice and is studdable for better grip.

In addition to investing in a set of winter tires, Voth recommends taking a more cautious approach to driving in the winter and strictly observing the rules of the road. For starters, he suggests adjusting your speed to accommodate weather conditions, as decreasing your speed allows more time to respond should a difficult situation arise. Voth also promotes proactive driving in order to anticipate situations before they happen. “Studies indicate that 80 per cent of all accidents could be prevented if drivers had one more second to react. Adjusting your view farther down the road allows you to gain that one second and identify problems before they happen.” - News Canada

ESCAPE SPORT PACKAGE

more. Also included on the exterior of the Ford are black bezel hen it comes to the domestic SUV, there’s projector headlights, smoked taillights, black roof rack rails and really only one name that comes to mind; a unique to the sport front grill. The $1200 cost of the package the Ford Escape. In the last 16 years, Ford suddenly starts to look like a bargain. It doesn’t even cover the cost has done a great job converting most small of the exterior upgrades, let alone the interior. Overall, the Escape family homes from minivans to sport utility is still a good-looking SUV. But after 5 years on top, maybe it’s vehicles. Every other domestic manufacturer has tried to take the time for a refresh? throne, but in my opinion Ford is still king. Don’t get me wrong One of the big changes to the interior in 2017 is the redesigned – the Jeep Cherokee is hot on the Escape’s heels but it’s not quite center instrument panel. The key changes are a more ergonomic there yet. This particular model has the optional Sport Package and 2.0L turbocharged EcoBoost engine. For a family SUV, the 2017 layout, redesigned climate controls and front mounted USB ports that not only look great but are very practical. As with every Escape has plenty of get up and go. Top that off with a 3500lb tow capacity and you’ll be able to carry the kids, dog, cat, groceries, Escape since 2012, the front windshield and fantastic visibility are one of the key reasons Ford has been leading the domestic SUV other dog, baseball gear AND a trailer with a few quads on it. Not market. After I test an Escape, every other car feels like I’m driving too shabby for a grocery getter. with blinders on. Yes, it’s that good. The Sport Package mentioned The current generation of Escape has been around since 2012 earlier does have a few additions to the interior, most and some might say it’s about time for a facelift. In the meantime, Ford has made a few design tweaks inside significant of which are the sport bucket front seats. They are very comfortable; the driver seat is 10-way and out. They’ve also offered a Sport Package to give the Escape a more aggressive look. The whole “sport” adjustable and the bolsters are very supportive. The big downside is that they are only available in partial thing doesn’t really sit well with me, but for $1200 you do actually get a fair bit. I think a sport package leather. There’s a big fabric strip down the middle that doesn’t really match anything and gives the interior should include more horsepower, more capable a tacky, kind of cheap look. If I’m going for a fully suspension and a mean exhaust. Now, I understand loaded Sport Package, the last thing I want is fabric that being a single guy with no family that my opinion is totally irrelevant and completely impractical. But inserts in the seat that stain whenever I even think still, a guy can dream right? Now back to the $1200 about buying a coffee. The leather steering wheel and Aman Sundher shifter are a nice touch, but again are a great reminder sport package. The 19” wheels look fantastic on the Certified Heavy Duty that the seats don’t match. Another big selling feature Escape and really suit the larger SUV body lines. Not Technician is the foot actuated tailgate. Ford advertised the to mention they could easily cost up to $1000 if not 26

bajeesus out of this option and it’s a great idea, when it works. And don’t get me wrong, it does work 90% of the time. But for some reason, it never worked when I went to show my friends or when I had 12 grocery bags in my hands and was trying to do everything without putting them down. Granted, there may have been dirt on the sensor or it very well could have been operator error. But when the tailgate works it’s actually pretty cool. Besides the updated 2.0L EcoBoost engine, the handling and ride of the 2017 Ford escape is relatively unchanged. Now armed with 245hp and 275lb.ft of torque, passing on the highway is a breeze. Keep in mind this SUV weighs 3700lbs (if you get the four-wheel drive version) so don’t expect Bugatti Veyron speed here. But, all things considered the Escape is surprisingly quick. The ride is a little soft but comfortable and the body roll is actually

bearable for an SUV this tall. But just because it has a Sport badge on it doesn’t mean it’ll corner like a GT40. That’s a one-way ticket to merging on the highway on your roof. The upgraded 3500lb towing capacity for 2017 is an excellent upgrade; 90% of people that own small pickup trucks really only tow a trailer 3-5 weekends a year anyway. Having an SUV that can take your canoes to the lake helps save money on insurance and car payments. Even just having the capability is an asset. In 2017 the Ford Escape is still King of the domestic SUV’s. The overall package is great and hard to beat on price, but I’m still not too sure how I feel about the whole Sport thing. A little more horsepower and a louder exhaust would make me happy, but then again that’s not what most people are buying a family vehicle for. As a compact SUV, the Ford ticks all the boxes and then some. January / february 2017

improve your Winter Driving skills srdIAW dy mOsm dy vDIAw fRweIvr bxo

W

ith December upon us, this is the perfect time to remind drivers to be better prepared for the winter season. Granted, the Lower Mainland does have a variety of weather patterns, all drivers, whether in the Fraser Valley where there is more snow or in downtown where is more rain, need to be ready for changing driving conditions. Every year, I cannot believe the number of accidents that occur because of unprepared and overconfident drivers, even when there is just a sprinkle of the white stuff. Many new buyers are opting for all-wheel drive vehicles, which are great. But with the purchase of an all-wheel drive vehicle also comes more reliance and dependence on the machine, rather than on safe driving skills. Here in Vancouver, there are scores of owners of all-wheel drive vehicles who think they rule the road; remember though, these vehicles may be great in getting you moving, but they stop just like a two-wheel drive vehicle. Here are some great driving tips to keep in mind for our Lower Mainland weather. 1. Clean your entire vehicle of snow and ice before driving. So many times, drivers leave the roofs of their cars covered with snow and only clean the window elements. Once you are driving, the snow on the roof can blow onto vehicles behind you causing an unsafe situation. 2. Slow down, especially when approaching turns and hills! So many accidents can be avoided if drivers just slow down to a safe driving speed. It’s better to be 10 minutes late than having your car in a ditch or

dealing with an insurance claim. 3. Allow longer distances between you and the vehicle in front of you. Not only will you have more time to stop, but more time to make a decision if things go wrong. 4. Don’t use cruise control, even on highways. You should be the one in control. 5. Let the ABS do its job. Many years ago, we were taught to pump the brake pedal on snow and ice. Well, unless you can pump the brakes about 20 times a second, just stomp on the brake and let the antilock system do its job. 6. If your vehicle begins to skid, ease off the accelerator and steer into the skid. Thus, if the rear of your car is sliding to the right, steer to the right. It seems awkward, but it’s the right thing to do. Once you regain control, slowly apply the accelerator and continue. 7. If you get stuck, rather than trying to accelerate hard, first clear as much snow from around the tires. Then put something with traction (salt, sand, etc.) around the tires. Next, slowly try to drive out. You may need to rock the car back and forth by using drive and reverse. If all fails, call a tow-truck. Again, remember that an all-wheel drive vehicle will help you get moving from a full stop and will somewhat help around corners, but will certainly not help you stop or slow down any faster than a two-wheel drive. Always be a safe and responsible driver, especially in poor driving conditions. If you don’t need to be on the road, stay at home. If you must travel, always keep a winter emergency kit in the vehicle.

PRIVATE INCOME & GROWTH they’re not as capable when it comes to going off-road. I agree 100 %: a 2WD truck is not as capable off-road as a 4WD truck. However, I had to assess what I was really in to and how was I truly intending to use this truck? It was to get me to work, run errands, go on road trips, haul odd shaped personal items, go camping (logging truck roads) and maybe tow once or twice a year. In order to accommodate the mild off-roading I was going to do when camping, some modifications had to be made, which included a new suspension that lifted the truck 2 inches, new 31.5” tires and upgraded exhaust. Using the factory equipped Eaton G80 locker, the truck is now more than enough capable for all of the situations I put it in (you can watch the truck in off-road situations on my YouTube channel: AnthonyJ350). When I eventually get a new truck, I do intend to purchase a 4WD as I have come to the limits of this platform. But I have learned so much from this truck by using it for different tasks and driving it daily. Now I know what I really want out of a rig and how I intend to use it. I don’t regret purchasing this 2WD truck one bit as it has served me and my family well and I hope to pass it down to keep the vehicle in the family.

2017 Honda Civic Hatchback

2017

HONDA

Civic Hatchback

M

uskoka, ON: When the Honda Civic landed on Canadian soil in 1973, nobody expected the little hatchback to become as steadfast as a name as it did. Here was a little car, built in Japan, that was going to challenge the surge of the Toyota Corolla. Muscle cars were big of course, but compacts were beginning to make their presence in the North American market. Fast forward forty-four years and the Civic is still here, as one of the best-selling cars in the world. And for 2017, Honda has brought back the Civic Hatchback after 11 years in hiding. We were invited to beautiful Muskoka, full of fall colours, to be one of the first media to drive the new Civic Hatch. Honda has been busy making sure all body styles of the Civic are available to the mass market. The sedan has been a great seller and we were one of the first to drive, and be impressed by, the Civic Coupe in 2016. The Hatch now completes the line-up, offering more versatility to hatchback lovers. However, this is going to cost you a lot more than $4,000, which was the original price in 1973. Honda has gone the same route as some other manufacturers, by building the Hatch on a global platform shared by other models in the line-up. Unless you’ve got a canny eye, you may not notice much difference between the Hatch and sedan from the B-pillars forward. The keen eye will notice a blacked out grille, slightly more aggressive vents, and a lower looking stance. Both the sedan and Hatch are virtually the same height and share the same wheelbase. But unlike the sedan, Honda engineers made sure the Hatch was much more aerodynamic, and based on looks alone, they’ve succeeded. I was impressed by the look of the Coupe and the Hatch is just as, if not more, beautiful. Although our drive fleet was mostly LX trims, if you opt for the Sport or Sport Touring, you’ll get centre exhaust and it looks awesome.

January / february 2017

On the inside, the cabin is almost identical to the sedan. As with the CR-V, which was launched later in the year, the Hatch also has a more premium feel than you’d expect. Honda has really upped its game in design, choice of materials, and overall feel. What’s really going to appeal to buyers of the Hatch is the enormous amount of class-leading cargo space, which tops out at 728 litres, more than the Ford Focus, VW Golf, and Mazda3. According to Honda’s Steve Hui, “This new Civic Hatchback has enough space for two full suitcases AND a golf bag.” Another neat concept for the cargo area is an exceptional tonneau cover, that, rather than being retractable, now rolls from side to side – it works quite well. The roads through Muskoka provided some great driving experiences, where we put the new Hatch through the paces. During the first day of the drive, we drove a CVT-equipped Civic Hatch, which is probably going to be the volume seller because let’s face it, it’s the trend. The CVT (continuously variable transmission) is good, but it’s still a CVT and doesn’t provide as much enthusiasm as a 6-speed or typically geared transmission. For everyday driving, noone is going to complain much, but if you punch the accelerator, you’ll notice some hesitation. This brings me to the shift of the automotive market – most manufacturers are going with a CVT because it’s more economical, has less mechanical issues, and delivers better fuel economy. New drivers may only know a CVT transmission rather than an automatic geared transmission; thus, for these new drivers, they may not know any better – a pity in my opinion. Getting back to the Civic Hatch, there is a Sport mode that does improve the driving experience. I kept it in this mode for most of my drive. Ride quality of the Hatch is quite nice. Up front, the Civic is planted on MacPherson struts while an independent multilink setup is in the rear. As with other “new” Honda models, the rubber bushing have been replaced with fluid,

which makes a huge difference. While driving through the twisty back roads of Muskoka, the Civic proved to be a good ride. Granted, the ground was wet, overall traction and response was quite acceptable for this LX trim. The electric steering provides good feedback and at higher speeds, feels right. Day two of the drive event gave me the chance get behind the wheel of a manual 6-speed, the transmission most of us gearheads would probably choose. Shifts were short and precise; this is probably one of the best manuals on which to learn to drive a standard. The clutch is also quite forgiving. Both the CVT and 6-speed manuals are mated to the single power mill available (for now) – the new 1.5 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that also made its way into the new CR-V. It’s amazing how much smaller the engines are becoming, yet they churn out more HP and torque compared to their previous larger counterparts. This new engine puts out 174 HP and 167 lb-ft of torque in the LX and 180 HP and 177 lb-ft of torque in the Sport and Sport Touring. Looking for even more thrills? Then you’ll be happy to know that Honda has announced that a Civic Si and Type-R variations will be

here in the not too distant future. After two great days of driving, I had averaged 6.2 L/100 km of combined driving, impressive numbers considering we pushed the cars quite a bit. Honda claims class leading fuel economy and we nod our heads in agreement. The new Civic Hatchback LX’s that we drove did not feel entry level at all. Heated front seats, responsive touchscreen complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, rear-view camera and standard 16” wheels really make even the LX an attractive option. But with all these extras, be willing to pay just a bit more. The LX starts at $21, 390, with the Sport at $25, 190, and the Sport Touring at $30, 690 (with CVT and Honda Sensing). Yes, it’s a lot of money for a Hatchback, but according to Honda, you’re now getting a lot more car for the price. The Honda Civic Hatchback has been a crowd favourite since the day it was launched forty-four years ago. The newest iteration should be a favourite again as buyers will get a sporty premium car with the versatility of a hatch. For more information on the new Civic, visit www.honda.ca.

Holiday Eating; Metabolism Wars

’ is the season to try NOT to over indulge. Enjoying food, and quality time with family, and friend is what the holiday season is about. The fear of the festive’ 15 is always looming in the back of our minds. Gym sessions can be shorter due to obstacles surrounding a holiday schedule of work, traffic, cold weather and being prepared for dinners and office events. We often may not be able to get to the gym to burn off some of the extra calories we take in. Here are some simple solutions to accommodate balance are suggested. Be conscience of what you are eating; be accountable by keeping a journal. Accountability is the number 1 action required for success in everything we do. Journal a day in advance when it’s on your mind, what you need to target. This will not take longer than 15 mins to do. I journal my meals as Meals 1 -5, a brief description of what I am eating. For example, whey protein shake with spinach and an apple. I include my water intake by a check mark system for each cup consumed. It’s easy to forget to consume your daily 8 cups of water in this cold weather, and not sweating it up in the gym as frequently. One of the most challenging things to do is shifting your meals to allow for extra calories at work or office lunches and dinners.

Here is a solution for helping not bare the mental stress. Let’s say you have an office pot luck, which you know you’re going to likely have some baked goods, and some rich foods not normally eaten. Start your day with a light breakfast based on fiber-rich foods. Fiber helps to keep the digestive tract moving, absorb cholesterol, balance blood sugar, and fill you longer, all of which are good for metabolism. Fiber cereal with low fat milk, or cashew milk, a hardboiled egg for protein or fiber with a small amount of no sugar Greek yogurt are great. Your snack would be a small serving of veggies and hummus. Enjoy your office lunch and then dinner with a low fat protein, clean carbohydrate like quinoa, and big salad. If having drinks, be sure to choose low calorie sodas and fruit juices, mixed with water. Staying away from the high calorie slushy alcohol drinks, and calorie rich ales and beer is important. It’s better to eat calories than drink them. Alcohol is one of the most damaging things for metabolism. To sum this up, work around the event, and do not just throw the towel in for the season. It will make for a great start to the new year. Have control over your eating ahead of time, and do not feel guilty in your quest to a fitter and leaner you. Adjust your supplement regimen to fit your needs over the holidays. There are a lot of vitamin-based products to help encourage metabolism and curb appetite (fiber) and these can offer some extra support to help you in your endeavors. Happy Holidays, and a healthy new year to you!

Ford Focus RS, the Hyundai Elantra Sport is a 200-horsepower, front-wheel drive, four-door compact priced at a thrifty $24,999. Sold in only two trim levels, the base grade includes a standard six-speed transmission, body aero kit, red-stitched leather interior and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Engineers specifically tuned the sound of the motor and exhaust to produce an acoustically pleasing growl while accelerating — especially at around 6,000 rpm in third gear. 2017 BMW M2 Few models turned heads or made as much sound as the first-ever BMW M2 sports coupe. One of three vying for Best New Premium Sports/Performance Car, the heir to the 1 M Coupe is a little six-cylinder fire breather generating 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque mated to six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Our $67,795 tester was equipped with the automatic tranny and sprayed in a gorgeous Long Beach Blue Metallic. Unfortunately during my run the roads were frost-covered so I couldn’t experience the reported 0-100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds, but I had just as much fun making the sports exhaust burble and pop using the paddle shifters. 2017 Genesis G90 Fresh off a split from Hyundai, the initial offering from the premium Genesis brand is the G90. Competing in Best New Full-Size Premium Car, the flagship entered is the example powered by a bi-turbo V6 engine pushing 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque available at a low 1,300 rpm (5.0-litre V8 is optional). Sporting the redesigned winged Genesis emblem, the G90, starting at $84,000, is well proportioned with a long hood and short overhangs. Inside is where the sedan really impresses featuring loads of passenger room and generous use of real wood and Nappa leather. 2017 Mazda CX-9 The CX-9 finally enters its second generation and gives buyers that don’t want a minivan but need seven seats more choice. The swoopy KODO styling treatment debuted on the Mazda3 looks equally fantastic on the bigger mid-size crossover, which at $47,100 is the least expensive compared to other entries (Chrysler Pacifica and GMC Acadia) in Best New Full-Size Utility Vehicle. A fuel-efficient turbocharged 2.5 L SKYACTIV-G powerplant is found beneath the hood, the first turbo utilized on the platform. Unique tuning allows the setup to make 227 horses when fed regular gasoline, or 250 hp with 93 octane. For more information about AJAC or CCOTY, visit http://www.ajac.ca/ web/ccoty/pressroom.asp.

Toyota 2000GT

T

he Toyota 2000GT was introduced in Tokyo in 1965 and it immediately put the automotive community on notice. Toyota, and Japan, were making a statement that they could compete with the world's best producers of sports coupes. The 2000GT, however, was not Toyota's idea. Yamaha, known for its motorcycles at the time, decided to begin work on a sports car, its first venture into the automotive industry. After Yamaha had completed the initial designs for the car, the 2000GT found its home with Toyota, Yamaha's second choice for a manufacturer. The 2000GT was designed by Raymond Loewy and had been intended as a product for Nissan, who later decided not to take on the project. So Yamaha brought the plans for the 2000GT before Toyota. The engine found in the 2000GT was based on the inline six in the Toyota Crown. Yamaha adapted it for use in the new model by installing new double overhead camshafts. The engine produced 150 horsepower and could propel the 2400 pound vehicle to a respectable top speed of 135 miles per hour. Handling was impressive thanks, in part, to its 49/51 weight distribution. More than just a GT sports car, Toyota made sure the 2000GT found its way to the track. They entered a 2000GT in the Japanese Grand Prix. In its inaugural outing at that event in 1966, the model placed 3rd. A year later, it won the Fuji 24 Hours endurance race. Toyota even sent a 2000GT to the Yatabe Test Track, where it set 15 records in speed and endurance. Carroll Shelby even raced the 2000GT in SCCA events in the United States, racking up a respectable four wins in the 1968 season, the only season it would compete under Shelby's name. 42

January / february 2017

In 1967, the Toyota 2000GT played a starring role in You Only Live Twice, the fifth film of the James Bond series. Bond’s Japanese counterpart drove 007 around the streets of Tokyo in a 2000GT. Connery’s tall frame could not fit into the 45.7-inch tall coupe so Toyota built a targa top 200GT in order to further accommodate Connery, but producers ruled it out, because Connery’s head stuck out far above the roofline. Finally, Toyota produced a convertible that fit Connery just fine, and it was used in the movie. Sadly, neither targa nor convertible ever went into production. Production of the 2000GT lasted until 1970, with just 351 examples produced, and just 15% of those were imported to the United States. Toyota planned to produce nearly 1,000 examples annually, but sales were limited due to its cost. The price of the 2000GT topped $7,000 in 1967, which was over $1,000 more expensive than a Jaguar E-Type and Porsche 911, and over $2,500 more than a Chevrolet Corvette.
