inally – summer is here! BC’s Lower Mainland has seen a much longer spring than expected and I had begun to wonder if I would ride my motorcycle much in these months. However, the Gods of Summer smiled upon BC dwellers and gave us back our warmer, longer days. Since my younger girls sometimes like to go on motorcycle rides with me, I’m always reminded of safety. For me, making sure that the backrest on my motorcycle is bolted properly, the foot pegs are at the right height for them, and of course, that their helmets are fitted properly. Even a quick ride can be dangerous and it’s better to protect your loved ones by being safe before heading on the road. This issue introduces Mr. Sandeep Gill, an established lawyer, who has been a motorhead for as long back as he can remember. Read Sandeep’s inaugural article, where he describes his own Porsche 911. This issue also reviews the Honda HR-V, BMW 540i, and the Infiniti QX60. With two flag people being injured by an idiotic driver (who is now facing charges), read Jasleen’s views about construction zones. In addition, ICBC provides tips on how to use a RoundAbout. Finally, JGK Media was invited to some impressive and elegant events – see pictures in this issue! Enjoy the summer months and send us your feedback! Safe driving and safer riding!

Volvo Cars to Go All Electric

V

olvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced that every Volvo it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor, marking

the historic end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine (ICE) and placing electrification at the core of its future business. The announcement represents one of the most significant moves by any car maker to embrace electrification and highlights how over a century after the invention of the internal combustion engine electrification is paving the way for a new chapter in automotive history. “This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.” Volvo Cars will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars. It will launch five fully electric cars

between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance car arm. Full details of these models will be announced at a later date. These five cars will be supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options on all models, representing one of the broadest electrified car offerings of any car maker. This means that there will in future be no Volvo cars without an electric motor, as pure ICE cars are gradually phased out and replaced by ICE cars that are enhanced with electrified options. “This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” said Mr Samuelsson. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.” The announcement underlines Volvo Cars’ commitment to minimising its environmental impact and making the cities of the future cleaner. Volvo Cars is focused on reducing the carbon emissions of both its products as well as its operations. It aims to have climate neutral manufacturing operations by 2025. The decision also follows this month’s announcement that Volvo Cars will turn Polestar into a new separately-branded electrified global high-performance car company. Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars, will lead Polestar as Chief Executive Officer.

DRK’s Latest Buzz

Tesla Model 3 is Coming Soon

T

he first Tesla Model 3 electric car for the masses should come off the assembly line on Friday with the first deliveries in late July, the company’s CEO

says. CEO Elon Musk, in several Twitter messages early Monday, says the new car passed all government regulatory requirements for production to begin two weeks ahead of schedule. The company plans to hold a party to hand over the first 30 Model 3s to customers on July 28, Musk wrote in a tweet. The Model 3 is to start around $35,000 and with a $7,500 federal electric car tax credit, could cost $27,500. Tesla says the five-seat car will be able to go 215 miles (346 kilometres) on a single charge and will be sporty, accelerating from zero to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds. Musk tweeted that the company expects to produce 100 cars in August and more than 1,500 in September. “Looks like we can reach 20,000 Model 3 cars per month in December,” he wrote. That figure is less than previous estimates. Musk earlier had said Tesla would make 10,000 Model 3s per week by December. Tesla also said Monday that it delivered about 22,000 vehicles in the second quarter, bringing first-half deliveries to about 47,100. That’s at the low end of the company’s prediction earlier this year of 47,000 to 50,000 Model S sedan and Model X SUV deliveries in the first half, as much as a 71 per cent increase over a year ago. While second-quarter deliveries rose 53 per cent from a year ago, they still were about 12 per cent below first-quarter deliveries. Tesla said in a statement that second-quarter production was hampered by a severe shortfall of battery packs. Production averaged 40 per cent less than demand until early June, the company said. 8

BlackBerry Attempts to Cull Car Hacking with New Software

B

lackberry’s real-time operating system QNX is being used in many cars on the road today, but future vehicles will be packing new software designed to keep the vital operations of the car safe and secure. The QNX Hypervisor 2.0 virtualizes separate operating systems for each component, keeping the infotainment system entirely separated from the rest of the vehicle’s operating systems. That means that even though infotainment and safety critical systems may be on the same compute unit, they will be operating individually from each other. For example, a vehicle’s instrument cluster will be protected if the infotainment system is hacked or fails, thanks to QNX Hypervisor 2.0. In QNX’s words, this will allow the car to manage errors and faults better, meaning that individual systems can restart and diagnose themselves without needing to affect other systems.

Honda Has 3 New Reveals

I

ts sights set on boosting North American market share by 2030, the Honda Motor Co. dropped the silks for a trackside showing of several new vehicles at the company’s research and development facility last week. The offering included a new halo car, the Civic Type R; the Clarity, Canada’s first plug-in hybrid from Honda; and a fully redesigned Accord sedan that promises to be the auto maker’s most luxurious version yet. All are set to arrive in Canadian dealerships in the coming months. Honda isn’t planning to widen the lineup in Canada beyond the hybrid Clarity series – U.S. customers will also get full-battery and hydrogen fuel-cell versions. It is aiming for two-thirds of the global fleet to be electrified in some manner by 2030. “For us, the most important market is the North American market,” said Takahiro Hachigo, Honda president and CEO. Persisting with a theme that rival Toyota also trumpets, Mr. Hachigo said Honda is focused on making vehicles that “give you a joyful feeling.” The Type R, a performance sport compact with more than 300 horsepower, certainly provides thrills.

City of Vancouver Approves New Fees for Electric Car Charging

E

lectric Vehicle (EV) owners in Vancouver will now have to pay up if they want to charge up. Vancouver City Council has approved a new policy that will see EV owners, who had previously been able to charge up for free at city charge stations, on the hook for electricity. According to the new policy, EV owners will have to pay $2 per hour for a slow charge. Those in a hurry and looking to power up quickly will be on the hook for $16 per hour. In both cases, drivers will still have to pay an hourly parking meter rate, which was already in place for the use of charging stations. The city estimates the new rates would be equivalent to about 50 cents per litre of gas. Green Councillor Adriane Carr says high demand for the charging stations was part of the decision to move ahead with the fees. “It looks like it’s going to be a pilot project that staff are going to start on quickly. They are very keen to see the response. There are parking meters right now that have electric vehicle charging stations, they are backed up and it’s hard to get at them.” Council also approved another pilot program calling for 20 new charging stations, 15 of which would be residential installations. The city currently has 16 curbside charging stations. Use of electric vehicle charging stations has more than doubled in the past two

years in Vancouver and the city says the stations where fees are being introduced had over 17,000 charging sessions last year. BC Hydro expects the number of electric vehicles in B.C. to increase to about 300,000 in less than 15 years, and Vancouver alone expects to see about 30,000 of the rechargeable cars. The city says the pilot programs will continue for two years and the results will be reported back to council.

Select the sport drive mode and the drivetrain rewards your choice with excellent throttle response. Our test car also had an adaptive suspension that tightened up in that sport setting, giving this big sedan the feel of one that’s lighter and more compact. It doesn’t just feel lighter, either; it actually is, thanks to BMW’s judicious use of aluminum to cut about 100 kg from the car’s curb weight. Between that and a fuel-saving eco drive mode, BMW promises fuel consumption as low as 11.4/7.8 L/100 km in city

and highway driving respectively; our tester averaged about 12.0 L/100 km in a week of city driving. The 540i is a $69,000 car to start, a fair-sounding figure, but our tester’s long list of options drove the tag up to about $90,000. Those include the active safety features, massaging seats, steerable LED headlights, soft-close doors, hands-free power trunk, head-up display, remote parking and adjustable suspension, among others. I had good reasons for falling in love with that original 540i; I suspect a new generation of gearheads and technology enthusiasts will have no trouble finding reasons to be smitten with this one.

ever has the compact market been so competitive than today. With more and more manufacturers getting into the game, there’s an option for almost anyone looking at getting into a compact sport-ute. And for many people, small is the new big, especially when you consider what’s included. The 2017 Honda HR-V is considered a newbie, with the first one making its appearance in 2015 as a 2016 model. Now in its second year, the model is a hot seller, following in the footsteps of siblings like the Civic and CR-V. For 2017, there aren’t any changes to the HRV, which is based on the Fit platform, Honda’s

compact hatchback that has some pretty unique cargo capabilities. While it doesn’t have the same flexibility of cargo space as the Fit, thanks to Honda’s Magic Seats, the HR-V does make for some neat utility configurations. You can move large Rubbermaid bins, hockey gear, and even a surfboard! Not bad for a compact SUV. The HR-V’s style isn’t as edgy as Toyota’s new CH-R (yes, the names can get confusing), yet still has a modern, conservative look, with lines that are definitely Honda or Acura, depending on the angle. The pointy nose is distinct but the headlights share common characteristics with the CR-V. Overall, the style will appease to a wide range of buyers,

from university students to retirees, and everyone in between. The small footprint of the HR-V makes it a great choice as well for those who live and/or work in an urban environment, with parking being a breeze in any size of space.

Step inside the HR-V and it’s clearly Honda: fit and finish is great, material choice is excellent and there is more room than what the cover portrays. The front seats offer excellent support and what impressed me more were the rear seats – they were roomy and offered a good amount of leg and head room, something I didn’t expect at all! With the way the rear doors and handles are designed, there’s less window space than I would like, but it doesn’t feel as claustrophobic as a couple of competitors. The one caveat that needs to be pointed at are the screens, both infotainment and climate control – for me, they are just too digital. Now, I think that I’m pretty tech savvy and good at gadgets. But these touchscreens fall short of what I expect from the brand. Bring back the knobs for basic functions like volume, tuning and temperature and fan control – it’s much easier when driving. I had the chance to drive the HR-V during the extended, and unexpected, winter months in Vancouver, where the all-wheel drive system was definitely needed. My test vehicle was the topof-the-line AWD EX-L Navi, which carries a price tag of $30, 450, coming very close to an entry level CR-V (pick your poison). The other trim levels are the LX and the EX, both of which can be had with either FWD or AWD. I would definitely choose either the EX or EX-L variants because according to Honda, you get more standard features at reasonable prices. For example, add-ons include exclusive features like Lane Departure, Forward Collision, and LaneWatch, and leather heated seats. All three trims are powered by a 1.8L four cylinder that puts out 141 horsepower, enough for everyday driving. The EX-L Navi can only be had with the CVT and in all honesty, it does a good job. CVT’s have come a long way since they first made their presence

almost 10 years ago and Honda makes a darn good one, the elastic feel almost non-existent. And with this CVT, the HR-V gets top points for fuel efficiency in its class. For the week that I had this compact SUV, I found it very easy to drive. The transmission gives enough go when you step on the throttle, with the engine revving high for a decent feeling of acceleration. Also to note is that there isn’t very much engine or road noise; now, it’s not as quiet as the CR-V, but still very adequate for a vehicle of this size and class. Our family owned an older model CR-V and I can attest that the HR-V is way way quieter than that. Although I was happy with the HRV’s power for most every day driving, it did disappoint when trying to pass at highway speeds. The engine revved high and made noise, but there was little in terms of performance when needed at these higher speeds. Even putting the vehicle in Sport Mode did little to help! Honda wants to make sure that you stay as green as possible when driving their vehicles. Thus, as in other models, there’s a ring around the speedometer that glows different colours, depending on your driving style. Drive nice and easy and the ring glows green; drive it harder and it changes to white or blue – neat little feature I think. The HR-V utilizes an electric power steering system (now becoming the norm) and it is nicely matched for this vehicle. It’s light yet gives very good feedback and road feel. I also liked the size of the steering wheel – just right for most drivers. On the snow and ice-covered streets of BC’s Lower Mainland, Honda’s AWD system did a great job. Under normal circumstances, power is usually sent to the front wheels. If slippage is detected, the system instantly sends the appropriate amount of power to all wheels, providing great grip (yes, my test vehicle was fitted with snow tires). I usually test most press vehicles like they are my daily driver and thus, my week included dad duties – school drop off and pick up, swimming, karate, and yes, even shopping at the mall. My kids had no trouble getting into and out of the vehicle and buckling seat belts was no issue. Unlike a few other manufacturers, Honda makes sure that kids don’t have to fuss around when strapping themselves in. Another plus for the HR-V was the height of the cargo area; my kids didn’t have to throw their bags up and over to get them in, something they’ve done in many other vehicles we’ve tested. The one complaint from my kids though – not enough cubby holes and storage places. I guess they are too used to our Odyssey! While the 2017 Honda HR-V has a few minor quirks, it still has a lot going for it – good styling, excellent safety features, a solid engine and transmission, and a great AWD system that will make it a great choice for many people who are shopping in this class. With a starting price of $21, 150, I think it’s going to do quite well in the Canadian market.

HENRY FORD MODEL T

hYnrI Porf MODEL T

- Jag Dhatt

W

hat better vehicle to include in our classic car than the one that began the automobile era by utilizing the mass producing assembly line? Sure, there were other cars built before the famous Model T, including ones built by Ransom Olds, Karl Benz, and Wilhelm Maybach; but Henry Ford perfected the assembly line and was able to produce a complete car in about 93 minutes. The Model T was not Ford’s first vehicle; in fact, Ford had designed close to twenty prototypes before the Model T, going as far back as 1903. But happy with the design and engineering of the Model T, Ford pushed production in 1914 to amounts never seen or heard of before. Not only was the Model T an attractive vehicle, it could be purchased by the average American with about four month’s salary. Ford’s Model T could be bought as a convertible or hardtop and was fitted with a 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder engine that produced 20 hp and could reach a top speed lose to 70 km/h. The engine could be run on kerosene, gasoline, or ethanol, but gasoline became preferred due to its decreasing costs. Since the Model T was “affordable” compared to other cars, they began to be seen all over. Sure, there wasn’t much competition either, but people enjoyed the comfort levels of this car and now, could travel at their discretion. The driver controlled the transmission by three foot pedals, while throttle was controlled with a lever on the steering column. Ride comfort was good, but increased significantly when balloon tires were introduced in 1925. The Model T’s last year of production was in 1927. Not only had this car changed the automotive industry, but was instrumental in the use of vehicles in various industries.

It’s a CONSTRUCTION ZONE for Heaven’s Sake!

F

or the past couple of months, I’ve been driving through so many construction zones that it seems like we’re in an economic boom. Whether in downtown Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Burnaby, or the Tri-Cities, there’s construction everywhere. Don’t get the idea that I’m opposed to construction; far from it, actually. But in construction zones is where I’ve seen the worst of driving behaviours. Recently, while I was going to get groceries in the Tri-Cities, traffic was moving along at a decent speed, and most people were obeying the flag-people, as they should. I was minding my own business and travelling in my own lane when, out of nowhere, a big SUV came barging right in front of me, trying to avoid waiting in line. I had to slam on my brakes and give my head a shake. What was the driver thinking? Did he/she not see the “Child in Car” sticker on my rear window? While I was about to honk my horn, I decided against it after seeing the faces of my two daughters in the rear view mirror. It wasn’t worth it. My brain tried to make me believe it could have been an honest mistake, but my gut told me differently. I wish I could say that, on the whole, every automobile I observe in a construction zone is mindful of the signs and posted speed limits, but I can’t. Last month, the portable sign that announces the speed to you as a warning of the speed at which you’re entering a construction zone, had clocked a car travelling at 109 km/h, where the speed limit was 60 km/h. That’s almost double! I swear the flag person had to jump out of the way to avoid any potential catastrophe and I’m sure she was shaking like a leaf after that incident. With sky high fines and demerit points for not obeying speed limits in construction zones, it always makes Jasleen Dutt me wonder who can afford to blow Certified Full-Time Mom through these areas. Can the average and Part-Time Writer person just throw away $500 - $1000

22

over a matter of just a few minutes? Well, if fines don’t slow you down, think of this. Are your precious few minutes worth the risk? Could you live with yourself knowing that, because of you, someone’s child, parent, or spouse didn’t come home? What if it was your family member who didn’t make it home? Just think about it. Slow down. It’s not worth it.

5 Tips for a Fuel-Efficient Road Trip

T

he warm weather is here, meaning it’s time to get ready for a road trip. With so many exciting destinations across the country, local getaways have never been more popular. You can save money and help protect the environment from excessive fuel emissions on your next road trip by following some simple tips. “Following your vehicle manufacturer’s scheduled maintenance guide is paramount for maintaining fuel efficiency,” explains Darryl Croft, automotive expert at OK Tire. “Items like your ignition and emissions systems can affect fuel economy.” Here are some other things to consider: Smooth operator. Consistently slowing down and speeding up is a major contributor to unnecessary fuel consumption. Applying a light throttle and avoiding sudden braking will help you conserve fuel and prevent excessive damage to your vehicle over time. Planning a route that will reduce the need for stopping and starting can really pay off. Under pressure. Under-inflated tires can increase your fuel consumption, so check tire pressure once every week or two to ensure they are inflated correctly. If the steering feels odd, you should also check your tire pressure. Some vehicles come equipped

24

JULY / AUGUST 2017

with an onboard tire pressure sensing system, or TPMS. If you’re unsure of what your pressure should be, consult your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications for tire pressure, which can be found in the owner’s manual, gas tank flap or inside the driver’s side door. Lighten your load. It may seem obvious, but the heavier your car is the more fuel it will consume significant on a long trip. Removing roof racks and keeping windows and sunroofs closed will also help reduce drag. Plan ahead and pack only the essentials to improve fuel economy and lower emissions. Tune it up. Routine maintenance includes oil changes, spark plug replacements, air filter, and more. These tweaks can go a long way towards saving you money at the pumps. If it’s been a while since your last appointment, bring your vehicle in for a check-up before you take off on that road trip. Bad vibrations. Feeling a vibration in your steering wheel? This could be a symptom of improperly balanced tire and wheel alignment. When wheels are misaligned, your tires will drag instead of rolling smoothly. This can cause tires to wear out quickly and unevenly, increasing your fuel consumption. The alignment should be checked by a certified automotive technician at least once a year or more if needed. - News Canada

Dining with Pashion

The Blackberry Kitchen 7494, Mary St, Mission, BC

I

t’s nice to finally write about a restaurant in my home town of Mission where I was born and raised. I was invited for lunch and when the name The Blackberry Kitchen was said, I had no idea what it was. I thought I knew my home town so well, but was in for an unexpected surprise. When I arrived it was pouring rain. It was so bad I sat in the car waiting for it to ease. The restaurant is part of Fraser River Heritage Park, which coincidentally is where I had my first job out of high school for the Mission Folk Music Festival which takes part in the park every summer. I reminisced as I looked at three log buildings in the park in front of me and had no idea which one to approach. I went to the building to the right furthest West. It was not the right one, and I was getting soaked, and ran to the middle building. It was the right one! So if you decide to go, just go straight to the middle building to avoid confusion. Inside the atmosphere was very pleasant and welcoming. I was looking around to make sure I was still in Mission, BC, right? It was like a rustic log cabin, with art work available on the walls for sale from local artists and a large chandelier made of antlers. We managed to snag a window nook and got a beautiful view of the Fraser River below us. I chose to have the baked macaroni and cheese and a side of hand cut kennebec fries for lunch. The macaroni had an aged cheddar sauce, herbed bread crumbs and warm bacon crumbles. I was totally down to enjoy warm bacon crumbles. My friend ordered soup. My pasta was piping hot out of the oven and covered in crispy bread crumbs and warm bacon. I had to wait about five minutes to let it cool. It was very cheesy and had the right amount of crunch. On a chilly wet day, this comfort food warmed me up from the inside. My friend ate his soup so fast I didn’t get a taste, which is typical for him.

(I really need to stop taking him when I do a review). He also stole a few of my warm bacon crumbles! There were also toasted buttered baguette slices as well to dip in the cheese sauce. The difference with fresh fries was nice after the usual frozen fries normally offered. The Blackberry Kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. There is a wonderful menu featuring unique items such as homemade lemonade, rosemary ketchup, and mango cheese quesadilla. Salad dressings are freshly made and surprisingly in the little town of Mission, there are a few French dishes served on the dinner menu. I’m still in shock you can get escargot in my home town and Beef Bourguignon. The restaurant is fully licensed and has French and Italian wines on the drink list and also has a dessert menu! I’m eyeing the buttermilk pancakes with bacon and warm syrup for my next visit for breakfast. As I was walking out, the sun started to shine and I could see the beautiful park setting. There’s a path and benches along it and the river below. The park glistened in the sun and I looked up on the hill. As an adult we just see a hill, but that day I saw the hill through the eyes of my childhood. I could just imagine rolling down the hill and having grass stains all over me laughing and having fun. There was also a love lock area along one of the paths. It was near the cemetery which is also in the park. So if you’re coming to the restaurant with a loved one, you may want to bring along an engraved lock with your initials and toss the key to show your unbreakable love, and create a very special memory along with your special meal. 5 Tips To Make Your Commute A Greener One

E

nvironmental awareness in our driving not only helps the health of our planet, but also the health of our wallets. “Canadians are becoming more environmentally conscious, and an easy way to lower our eco-footprint is by maintaining our vehicles,” explains Darryl Croft, OK Tire automotive expert. “Also, keeping a few simple green driving tips in mind can help reduce your fuel consumption”. 1. Travel light. Roof racks, excessive cargo and heavy vehicles all add to fuel consumption, which in turn contributes to air pollution. A good rule of thumb for reducing your weight on the road is if you don’t need it, don’t bring it. Roof racks also increase wind resistance, making your vehicle work harder to maintain speed. 2. Keep your vehicle maintained. Ensuring that your vehicle is in peak condition and functioning at its most efficient will help keep your carbon footprint down. Have the basic maintenance items checked and tuned up as needed on a regular basis. This includes tire pressure, fluid levels, battery, air filters, brake pads and spark plugs. 3. Avoid idling or revving to save fuel. When you are stopped, switch off your engine. Revving is an equally environmentally toxic habit as it uses unnecessary fuel. Driving at a safe, moderate speed is the best way to save fuel. 4. Check your tires regularly. Once every week or two, check that your tires are sufficiently inflated. Under-inflated tires wear

faster, creating drag and greater fuel consumption. Alignment is important as this can also create a drag on your vehicle. This should be checked by a certified automotive technician at least once a year, every time new tires are installed, or if you feel your vehicle is pulling to the side. 5. Buy eco-friendly tires. An energy-efficient tire is designed to maximize gas mileage by low rolling resistance, returning energy back to the tire and reducing heat generation. Eco-friendly tread compounds also reduce particle emissions. - News Canada

The Love with Stuttgart

The Love with Stuttgart and the Understated Supercar

T

hey say once you go black you never go back. The same can be said about Porsche. I was 16 when my older cousin handed me the keys to his 1982 Porsche 911 SC for the weekend while he was out of town. It was light blue, had an Alpine stereo, and the classic sound of carbureted air-cooled flat six. It was also my first feeling of a car that handled like it was on rails, but, also gave me a quick understanding of how classic Porsches reacted when their limits were reached (to the 28

uninitiated, understeer). I felt like Tom Cruise in Risky Business, cool beyond my years. What I didn’t know at the time was that my love for Porsche would be forever written. Span the world around and the iconic shape of the 911 is unmistakable. Since its inception in 1963, Porsche has taken a design that defies the logic of vehicle design, i.e. placing the heaviest part of the car, the engine, behind the rear axle. It has refined it over the decades to produce one of the most finely tuned and handling cars in the industry. Like the humble bee defies physics

The Love with Stuttgart

and still flies, the Porsche 911 is one of the most thrilling and rewarding driving experiences one can experience. Slight tweaks or modifications model after model only beg the enthusiast to like the next generation even more, but, what never changes is the beautiful silhouette pictured above. Now, what makes me love the 911 so much? Maybe it’s the size. The 911 is deceptively small, but, for a guy who is 6’3 tall, the cabin comfortably holds my frame. It’s this same size that make the car a handling masterpiece, the turn in is sharp and precise, razor like. Maybe it’s the sound. Porsche’s naturally aspirated flat/boxer six, in its various iterations, is arguably the greatest piece of mechanical engineering that human kind has ever created. By positioning it behind your ears, it allows you to hear the engine perfectly in all of its mechanical glory. From its induction sound of the air rushing into the engine as you begin to rev it, all the way up to rapturous crescendo as it nears 7,000 rpm redline (8,500 in the newest GT3). Now as I write these words, I have an epiphany,

it’s the combination of these factors in a single package that make the 911 or for that matter any Porsche so intoxicating. The feeling I had when I drove my first Porsche, oh some 24 years ago, is felt today when I turn the ignition (which is on the other side) today in my own 997. I feel just as giddy as I did back then, when I blip the throttle. Some will say, “What about Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren (just to name a few), they all make great driving cars, arguably just as beautiful.” However, all these manufacturers strive to achieve different things. Lamborghini - the most ostentatious pin up model cars that the mind can create; Ferrari - at their core strives to create racing cars and McLaren - well they’re the newcomer to the block, still establishing a publicly understood ethos. Porsche, however, has always created cars for the people, dedicated to producing machines that strive to fulfill the needs of the driver. How else could a manufacturer make a car slower, have less power, have less sound deadening, give it a prehistoric manual transmission with a foot operated clutch, increase the price and have all them presold before the car even hit the market? I am speaking of course of the new 911 R. Need I say more? Side Notes/Stories: Why is the ignition on the wrong side? Go to start a 911 (in all its versions) and you will not find the ignition in the normal place. This is because the ignition placement harkens back to Porsche’s involvement with Lemans (the historic race) in which the driver used his left hand to start the car, while his right hand was free to engage first gear and take off immediately, shaving off those few needed seconds. Who had the Prancing Horse First? If you look closely at the Porsche crest and emblem, you will notice a familiar Prancing Horse in the center. Most people connect the Prancing Horse with another supercar manufacturer bearing the name of Enzo Ferrari. It was Porsche that began using the symbol in 1931. It was not until a year later that Enzo Ferrari decided to use the famous black horse in front of a yellow background in 1932. Porsche 1. Ferrari 0.

How to Use a

Roundabout www.icbc.com

A

roundabout is a circular intersection without stop signs or traffic signals. Traffic flows counterclockwise around a central island. The benefits? Roundabouts improve traffic flow. They reduce serious crashes, injuries and fatalities because they virtually eliminate the chance of a head-on or right-angle collisions. They improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Roundabouts can even reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Tips for drivers • You’ll see crosswalks on the entry legs to the roundabout. You need to yield to any pedestrians or cyclists in the crosswalk, and be sure you don’t block it. • Yield to traffic that’s already inside the roundabout—it has the right of way. • Drive counter-clockwise within the asphalt lane. • There is usually a raised or coloured apron around the centre island in the roundabout. It’s there for large trucks and emergency vehicles only. Stay off that area. • Keep moving while you’re in the roundabout. If an emergency vehicle approaches, don’t block its path. • When you’re leaving the roundabout, signal a right turn just

32

JULY / AUGUST 2017

before you exit. That lets drivers waiting to enter the roundabout and pedestrians waiting to cross know your intentions. • Yield to pedestrians crossing the exit lane. Tips for cyclists • Cyclists can ride either with traffic, or on the cycle pathway. • If you’re riding on the road, merge with traffic before you enter the roundabout. • If you’re using the cycle path: • Enter the roundabout via the ramp that extends from the shoulder of the road. • Watch your speed when you’re on the pathway, and be aware of pedestrians. • Dismount and use the marked crosswalks to cross the intersecting streets. Tips for pedestrians • When you’re crossing the legs of a roundabout, always use the marked crosswalks. • Just like crossing any road, wait for a gap in traffic, or until all vehicles are stopped. • Don’t cross to the centre island. • Be aware of cyclists sharing the crosswalk and pathways.

Speaking about the campaign, Mark Ronson said: “I always like to work with collaborators who are innovative and unique in and out of the studio. When I was approached by Lexus with the concept of this campaign and saw the new LC, it felt fresh and exciting. I was drawn to the idea of using music to inspire and create an experience around this car.” The design of the LC coupe remains remarkably true to that of the LF-LC concept car, making both winners of the EyesOn Design Award. The LC is the figurehead of an evolving vehicle development culture at Lexus, which embraces the collaboration between design and engineering teams to create a stunning car which surpasses all expectations. Ronson, Jennifer Barron, Director of Lexus in Canada said “We are excited to be collaborating with Mark Ronson, who is one of the most recognized music producers in the industry and represents boundary-pushing vision and innovation, both of which align perfectly with the direction of the Lexus brand and in particular, with the new LC. We can’t wait to see the what emerges from the Make Your Mark campaign.”

APNA Truck Show 2017 Sets New Records

T

he 2017 APNA Truck Show continued the trend of being the largest truck show in Wester Canada by setting new records. Everyone expected a great show and after two days, those expectations were met and exceeded. The management team of the APNA Truck Show is proud to report that the 2017 show was a great success, breaking all previous records. The first day started as a soggy one, but the afternoon brought sun and smiles. Crowds gathered, exhibitor booths were full, and when visitors left, there were smiles all around. This year, the biennial show, which took place at Tradex in Abbotsford, BC on June 10-11, set an all-time attendance records, with over 11,500 registered attendees and over 3,000 attendees who were let in due to the huge lines. Huge lines tend to be a common place at the APNA Truck Show, both inside and outside of the show. With almost

15,000 attendees, this year’s show surpassed the previous record set in 2015. In addition, exhibitor presence increased by 50%, again solidifying APNA’s popularity in Western Canada.

Since 2010, the APNA Truck Show become to be known as the most anticipated truck show in Western Canada, with exhibitors and attendees coming from as far away as California and Toronto. This year, in conjunction with SafetyDriven, a Speaker Series was added, which included talks by retired CFL All-Star Shae Emery and dietician/media personality Diana Steele, as well as a COR Panel discussion, facilitated by Jag Dhatt and featured Earl Galavan, Colette Mondin, Brad Wilson, and Laurel O’Donnell. Last year, the APNA Truck Show gave away a custombuilt Harley Davidson motorcycle valued at over $17, 000. This year, in association with Kingpin Trailers and Hyundai Translead, APNA Truck Show was proud to give away a 53-feet dry van trailer, valued at over $40, 000. The trailer was won by Hardev Bajwa, who incidentally

also bought another flatbed trailer at the show. Said Wesley Schneider, CEO of Kingpin Trailers, “We are very happy with the show this year and that we worked closely with the APNA team to make this trailer give-away possible. With all proceeds going to the Children’s Wish Foundation, it’s a win-win for everybody involved.” When asked if Kingpin Trailers and Hyundai Translead would do something again for the next APNA Show, Schneider answered, “You BET!” After a very busy Saturday, guests looked forward to the Cocktail Party and VIP Dinner Event. These two events gave industry professionals a chance to mingle in a social setting, where they enjoyed great food and beverages. As in previous years, the VIP Dinner Event is also the venue where funds are raised for a worthy cause. In 2015, the VIP Dinner Night raised over $23, 000 – this year, this year, we are pleased to announce that a record-setting $47, 500 was raised for the BC/Yukon Chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation. Christine Sorensen, who cohosted the event with Jag Dhatt, was amazed by the generosity of those in the trucking industry, saying, “I cannot believe how giving the industry is. I certainly look forward to the next show.” Another highlight of the show was Ice Road trucker Lisa Kelly, who spent many hours both days taking pictures and signing autographs for her fans. Truckers and families from all over had a chance to take pictures with Lisa and talk to her about her life on the ice roads in northern Canada. Did we mention that the Michelin man came all the way from Montreal to be at the APNA Truck

Show? Children met and hugged the Michelin man, who said very little but smiled a lot. Finally, the Job Fair was a huge success at this year’s truck show. Some of Canada’s top transport companies met with potential recruits. We look forward to having even more companies at the next event. From all feedback, both during and after the show, the 2017 APNA Truck Show proved to be extremely successful. The management team would like to take this opportunity to thank all the exhibitors, attendees, and volunteers who made this show possible. We look forward to seeing you in 2019!

mode. Power delivery is smooth from the updated VQ motor which has more than enough torque to easily merge on to the highway. The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) is surprisingly pleasant. It acts like a vehicle with gears giving you the sensation of the vehicle making shifts, which is something I prefer in my driving experience as opposed to the rpms just staying at a certain speed and the vehicle humming like a traditional CVT’s characteristics. The AWD system is also always engaged unlike the Pathfinder which has a true 2WD mode. As far as capability, the Intelligent core: 33/40 AWD system is great for all weather on road conditions (especially As Tested: $65,135 when equipped with the correct tires). However it does not share In an earlier review we drove Nissan’s midsize the same offroad DNA as previous truck based SUVs Nissan/ Infinti SUV and this time around it’s Infiniti’s QX60’s used to produce. So keep that in mind if turn to be put through the paces. It’s interesting you do take this vehicle off to drive these vehicles back to back road with its lower ground because they market these vehicles differently and clearance and lack of skid they’re built on the same platform and have different plates. price tags. of electronics devices. Anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, emergency crash detection, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, front, seat mounted and roof mounted airbags as well as a full 360 camera system to assist with parking. I thought the 360 camera system was great and worked well when in tight areas, however I found the cameras equipped on the Pathfinder to be clearer and have a better frame rate than the QX60 for some reason. The forward camera will turn off as soon as you hit 10 KM/h. Other piece of mind safety items included are an immobilizer and an alarm. Interior (8.5) Infiniti being the premium brand in the Nissan family you can see and feel there are more upscale materials used in this model versus its Nissan cousin. You’ll notice right away the wood trim is much nicer in finish flowing with the dash, while the Nissan version seems a little too on the synthetic unnatural side. The stitching design is interesting on the seat and is subtle but has a love it or hate it design; the way it flows and curves it mimics flames which might not be the theme for a vehicle of this nature. The rest of the interior flows nicely and is pleasing to the eye. The dash and materials were used that will last a long time as long as owners take care of it. Styling (7.5) The QX60 has nice flowing lines with accents and a more aggressively styled front end, which gives it more of an SUV flavour and less “wagon-like”. I do wish the wheel design was a more simple 5 spoke design because wheels are the focal point of any vehicle and the ones equipped on the Infiniti have a busy look that also shares some similarities with some of the Korean auto manufacturers. Conclusion The Infiniti QX60 a well-equipped utility vehicle that will do well in a variety of on road weather conditions, handles great, returns back respectable fuel economy and does it all in style. If you’re willing to pay the extra money for nicer materials, and what I think is more attractive sheet metal get the Infiniti. However if you are more interested in getting the performance, convenience and safety features the Pathfinder is a better value in my opinion.

Nir Chehanowski Dome Lamp

Maui Jims Sunglasses

With summer times, you need to make sure you protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. Maui Jim sunglasses features the world’s finest lenses for superior protection, while providing excellent clarity and colours. Don’t go outside without them.

Poncho + Parker Poncho

JAG D H AT T ’S

J U L / AU G 2 0 17

Slip this unisex poncho on your little one post-pool. These ponchos are crafted from premium Turkish cotton, designed to be quicker drying than traditional cotton. And because these pieces act as 3-in-1 items (towel, cover-up, and clothing), they are smart picks for light packers. www.ponchoandparker.com

The Dome Lamp is tasteful and surprisingly space-saving, not to mention an optical illusion and art piece. A flat sheet of clear acrylic is carefully laser engraved and perched from a birch wood arm and iron base. When illuminated, LED light travels through the lines, suggesting the form of a traditional table light. It’s great on a shelf, nightstand, or wherever she needs to create extra space without sacrificing style.

Raden A22 Carry-On

TNK Stingray BBQ Multitool

Flip, fork, and fry your meat and veggies – and pop a bottle open, while you’re at it. This multifunction grill utensil can make your toolkit lighter as it incorporates a spatula, toothed tongs, fork and bottle opener. The “launch control” design helps you close the tool to slide food smoothly from the fork onto your plate. 44
