DRK Editorial

Editor’s Note

I

t’s hard to believe that it’s already July and more than half of 2015 is already behind us. With the summer holidays for students in full swing, make sure to spend time with your children. Take them camping, visit local attractions, have a family vacation or plan a road trip. Just make sure to prepare before taking off before any long drive. Mid-year also means the launch and delivery of many new models of vehicles and motorcycles. Just recently, we attended the unveiling of the all-new Volvo XC90 – what a beautiful vehicle. Read our initial review and thoughts of the vehicle in this issue. In this issue, we would also like to welcome three new contributing writers. Chris Chase, who needs no introduction, has been an automotive journalist for many many years and is a member of AJAC. Pamela Alspach is the new Business Development Manager at OpenRoad Lexus in Richmond – in just Jag Dhatt four years, she’s built quite the portfolio. Finally, Kevin Uy, who Editor-in-Chief is a professional freelance automotive, motorcycle, and lifestyle photographer, and the photographer for some of the biggest names in automotive, shares his thoughts about the new Volvo. This issue will feature the 2015 Honda Pilot, a vehicle that has been a fan favourite since its launch. We also look at the new Dodge Charger – FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) have shown tremendous sales numbers in the past few years and it’s because of cars like the Charger. Finally, we were fortunate to be one of the first to ride Harley Davidson’s Project LiveWire electric motorcycle – even though it’s a prototype, Harley is venturing into new territory and away from tradition. What an amazing motorcycle! Make sure to visit our online review site at www.rackandopinion.ca. And speaking of opinions, we value your feedback. If there’s something you wish to read about, let us know via email, message, or phone. Safe driving and riding always.

lectric car maker Tesla’s second-quarter deliveries surged 52 per cent to set a company record exceeding 11,000 vehicles. The Palo Alto, California, company had surpassed 10,000 vehicles for the first time in the first three months of the year and on Thursday said it had broken that record, delivering 11,507 vehicles. Tesla makes only one car, the Model S sedan, but CEO Elon Musk said last month he expects to begin deliveries of an SUV, the Model X, in three or four months. Tesla began 2015 with 20,000 reservations for the Model X. The company has said it plans to deliver 55,000 Model S sedans and Model X SUVs this year. The car maker cautioned on Thursday that record deliveries are not an indicator of overall financial results. The company has consistently lost money as it ramps up production. Despite record sales in the first quarter, Tesla lost $154 million. Musk has said the company hopes to reveal a prototype of its next vehicle, the Model 3 sedan, in March. The new model will cost around half the $70,000 starting price of a Model S and will likely go on sale at the end of 2017. Shares of Tesla Motors Inc. climbed 4 per cent, or $10.87, to close at $280.02 on Thursday. The stock is up 22 per cent over the past year.

Owner of Motorcycle Riding Through Surrey Mall Fined

T

he registered owner of a motorbike that was caught on YouTube speeding through the streets of Surrey, B.C. before heading inside a mall and riding across a pedestrian overpass has been served with hefty fines totaling around $13,500. Surrey RCMP say the multiple violations the owner was ticketed for included 58 traffic infractions. The motorbike involved has also been seized, pending a civil forfeiture hearing. “While we were unable to positively identify the driver of the motorcycle, we are still able to hold the registered owner to account in this instance,” Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann said in a statement. The video, released by Live Leak and uploaded to YouTube on March 13, cut between police helicopter and cruiser footage and surveillance footage from inside the Guildford mall. It shows several people moving out of the way of the motorcycle as it plunges down an escalator and through a set of sliding doors. Security guards can be seen running in pursuit. Helicopter footage shows the motorcyclist leaving the mall and riding across an overpass, as two pedestrians jump out the way. The video ends with a shot of the motorcycle, which bears stickers supporting the Hells Angels. The rider’s face has been blurred in the video footage. At the time the video surfaced, police confirmed that it had been created by an investigator and said they were looking into how it became public.

Surrey Firefighter Dies in Motorcycle Accident

F

irefighter Jay Easton has died following a crash between his motorcycle and an SUV. The crash occurred at about 1:45 p.m. on May 20 on the Haney By-Pass and 227th Street. Easton, 45, was airlifted to hospital and his injuries were initially believed to be non-life threatening, but he passed away in hospital on June 2. The driver of the Cadillac SUV was 89 years old, according to the Ridge Meadows RCMP, and officers have requested that he be re-tested for his driver’s license. Police don’t believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. A celebration of life was held for Easton on June 12 at Peace Portal Alliance Church, located at 15128 27B Ave. Donations may be made “In memory of Jay Easton” to the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society at Surreyfirefighters.com/donate. 8

Woman Shocked After Inheriting Her Late Husband’s Car Loan

A

n Ontario woman whose late husband purchased a new vehicle before unexpectedly passing away earlier this year was shocked after she learned she was still responsible for the car payments. Dolores Dalton’s late husband, Wayne Dalton, bought a 2015 Chrysler 200S last fall. He picked up the new car in November 2014 and drove it for approximately a month before suddenly falling ill. Wayne Dalton passed away in February. That’s when Dolores Dalton became responsible for financing the fully-loaded car even though she didn’t co-sign the loan for it. Her husband’s estate was responsible for the debt: $56,000 over an eight-year period. “I can’t afford this car,” Dalton told CTV Toronto. “I work at a daycare centre. This car is costing me a lot of money.” Dalton said while her husband was in hospital, she phoned the Pickering, Ont., dealership where her husband purchased the car to see if they’d take it back. It only had 3,000 kilometres on it. “They told me they would give me $20, 000,” she said. “I would still be out $36, 000 that I would owe the bank, and I would have a car to drive, and I would still have a loan.” CTV Toronto contacted the Chrysler dealership. After learning about Dalton’s situation, they have since agreed to re-purchase the vehicle from her. “When we heard about the financial impact Mrs. Dalton’s deceased husband’s new vehicle had placed on her, we wanted to help,” said the dealership’s general manager Ron Dodds. “We are pleased to say we have purchased the vehicle back and negated any further financial obligation by Mrs. Dalton.” Dalton returned the car over the weekend and has since been driving a more affordable used vehicle.

On June 10th, a 41-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were struck on their motorcycle shortly after 1 a.m. in the morning at the intersection of Victoria Drive and East 43rd Avenue, police say. VPD Sgt. Brian Montague said that luckily the injuries weren’t as serious as first thought. Montague added that police are looking for a white Toyota sports utility vehicle.

Canadian May Auto Sales Hit Record

N

ew car and truck sales in Canada hit a record high in May, with Chrysler leading the pack as the top-selling car maker for the month, bolstered by strong demand for luxury vehicles, according to data released Tuesday. Auto sales were up 1.1 per cent, with 197,937 cars and light trucks sold in Canada, industry data showed. Year-to-date, sales were up 3 per cent at 755,582 units. “The Canadian new vehicle market remains to be on track for the bestselling year ever as the industry reported the highest monthly sales in history last month,” DesRosiers Automotive Consultants wrote in a note to clients. The automotive market research firm also noted the “luxury vehicle market continues to gain momentum,” citing double-digit percentage gains for Porsche, MercedesBenz, Audi, Land Rover, Infiniti, BMW and Lexus. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Canadian sales edged up by 119 vehicles from a year earlier to 31,617 cars and trucks in May, as a rise in Jeep and passenger car sales helped offset lower minivan sales. Ford’s Canadian sales dropped 8.5 per cent from a year earlier, to 29,052 cars and trucks, as car sales fell 7.1 per cent, and truck sales dropped 9 per cent. GM Canada reported the largest sales gain for May among the Detroit auto makers, with 27,462 cars and trucks sold in the month, up 3.8 per cent from a year ago. In the United States, consumers bought cars and trucks at the fastest monthly pace

since early 2006, with sales of pickup trucks and SUVs leading the way. Automakers are still benefiting as consumers who put off buying new vehicles from 2008 to 2013 return to showrooms, said Dave Fish of MaritzCX, a market research firm. Maritz estimated

that if automakers sell 17.1 million cars and light trucks this year in the United States, another 13 million older vehicles would still need to be replaced. But he cautioned there were signs the recovery could have limits. Many younger consumers are delaying getting driver licenses or buying new cars, and households aren’t adding more cars, on average. “It looks like the good times may roll for some time into the future,” Mr. Fish wrote in a report.

July / August 2015

fter our last review of the Honda Accord Touring Edition, I had the opportunity to drive the 2015 Honda Pilot. Since I have always been a fan of Honda vehicles, I took the liberty of driving the 4WD 8-passenger Pilot Touring Edition for the week. This top-of-theline vehicle came equipped with navigation, rear-DVD system, tri-zone climate control, integrated 2nd row sunshades, rear-view camera and automatic tailgate with lift-up glass hatch. Yep, this baby was fully-equipped. Honda has always received top marks for building great vehicles – I agree and for this reason, we have a new Honda Odyssey and CR-V in our fleet at home. Would this Pilot impress me? Let’s find out. Right from the onset, the 2015 Honda Pilot is a big vehicle, both inside and out. This second-generation Pilot continues to go in the opposite direction than most of the industry and retain the boxy look. As you will read later, this structure has its benefits when it comes to interior space. On the outside, either you like it or you don’t; for me, it’s still pleasing to the eye and feels refreshingly different from the European look that most other manufacturers have decided to adapt. The vehicle is brash, yet retains an elegant, look. However, as many of you may have already seen, the all-new 2016 Pilot has been completely redesigned, inside and out. Thus, if you’re looking for a great value, now is the time to pick up the Pilot. The interior of the 2015 vehicle can easily accommodate a full hockey team and two spares – it is roomy. There are also an abundance of storage bins and cubbies, more than an elementary classroom. There are dual map pockets in all the doors, storage trays in the passenger-side dashboard, and even a bin located under the third-row armrest. Note-worthy is the massive center console between the front seats. Need even more room? There are many more nooks and crannies to store crayons, water bottles, and other items. If you are carrying 8 passengers, the boxy shape of the vehicle makes a huge difference. The European-looking competitor vehicles, with their rearward sloping rooflines, create reduced headroom, especially for the 3rd row passengers. This generation Pilot, however, gives ample headroom for all passengers, maximizing all “usable” space throughout the vehicle.

2015 Honda Pilot The cabin of the Pilot is constructed mostly of hard plastic. I’m not a fan of hard plastic and would prefer softer materials; however, that being said, Honda did it right and the materials look as nice as any hard plastic can. The dash is well-thought and all the major controls are easily within reach. At the center sits the 8-inch navigation screen, which has vivid colours and a sharp picture. Honda even added a cover on top of the screen to prevent glare, allowing the picture to be clear at all times. The one spot where Honda missed the ball is with the navigation, audio, and climate controls. Even though there is a separation between the systems, the buttons all look similar and it’s easy to hit the wrong one when making a selection. My wife preferred the controls on her Honda Odyssey, even though it is three years older. That being said, the learning curve is not steep and within a short time, one becomes comfortable with all the controls. Bluetooth integration is fool-proof and the voice controls on this Pilot are near perfect. From changing radio stations to placing calls, Honda’s voice control never made a mistake. Honda has spent its research dollars very wisely when it comes to engineering. This high-riding vehicle is very easy to drive, almost carlike. And like fine wine, the driving experience has only gotten better. Around town, the Pilot is nimble and manoeuvrability is excellent, which is quite surprising for such a large vehicle. The 18” tires absorbed most road imperfections, allowing for a quiet smooth ride, like the more expensive luxury SUV’s. I had no problems parallel parking the vehicle, thanks to the rear-view camera system, which has 3 different viewing options, and the parking sensors. On the highway, the Pilot drives like a big vehicle should – solid and capable. Yes, there is body roll, but that is expected for such a tall, 4600 pound vehicle. While it’s not going to win any slalom races, Honda emphasizes that it is a family hauler, not a curve hugging sports vehicle. The large, heated 10-way power leather seats were very comfortable and provided excellent support for the front passengers. My kids enjoyed watching their favourite Barbie movies on the rear 9-inch DVD system, a definite during long journeys. Regardless of trim, the second generation Pilot is only available with the 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6, which is mated to a five speed automatic transmission. While the engine is quiet, very smooth, and relatively responsive, it definitely falls behind the competition. The 2016 will get a new 3.5 direct-injected engine, and depending on trim, either a 6-speed or a ZF-sourced 9-speed. On the upside, however, the current Pilot gives pretty good fuel economy, delivering 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. I averaged about 21.3 mpg during the test drive, which is excellent considering that I made sure the i-VTEC was kicking in often. Keeping safety at the forefront, Honda fitted the Pilot with front airbags, side-curtain bags that cover all three rows, active head restraints, electronic stability control, tire-pressure monitoring system, and anti-lock brakes as standard. Nope, there are no HID headlamps, but again, the new model will surely be keeping up with the competition. The Honda Pilot continues to impress even years after its launch. Yes, it does have some shortcomings, but for a family SUV, it delivers excellent value for a great product, even when compared to luxury SUV’s. With the redesigned 2016 hitting the market any time, this might be a great time to pick up the current model for a great price. July / August 2015

RK Magazine sponsored soccer team, LOP FC, had an amazing 2014/2015 season. The team, managed and coached by Bhavik Chauhan and founded by Inder Nijjar, Jack Gill and Bhavik Chauhan was successful in capturing the Division 4 Title in May 2015. In its inaugural year, the soccer team had to start from the bottom of the league. From the very beginning, they were determined in establishing themselves in the Fraser Valley Soccer League. Coach Bhavik Chauhan, who has over 18 years of experience in coaching and 33 years of involvement in the game, was proud of the team’s efforts, dedication, and hard work ethic: “Our guys brought 100% to each and every game and it showed when we won the Division 4 title. There aren’t a lot of teams who win the division title in their first year.” After capturing the division title, LOP FC was headed to the finals of the Bradner Cup. After some hard-fought and closes game, LOP FC ended with the runner-up title in the Fraser Valley Soccer League, closing a very successful first season. Chauhan, who is looking forward to next season, said, “Our guys are now playing in the spring league and in the next season, we’ll be in Division 3. We’re looking forward to another great season.” The players for LOP FC ranged from the youngest being 18 to the oldest veteran player being 50. The team was led with joint captaincy of Prab Dhillon and Mandip Parhar. Prab led the back line with solid performances while Mandip led the front lines; Mandip also led the team with most goals scored.

y journey in the automotive industry began 4 years ago. At the time, I was looking to return to work after my maternity leave, and wanted a change. Since I was a long time BMW driver and love the brand – I thought I would take a chance and get my foot in the door at the new BMW/ MINI Langley dealership that was being build right near my house. I accepted an offer to be a part time receptionist – still thinking I was just looking to get out of the house for a few hours a week, but that didn’t last long. Within a few weeks I was offered full time and to be the Lead Receptionist. I

loved every moment of it. The reception area really can be the “hub” of the store. And since we were such a new dealership – and a new luxury retailer to the area we were very busy with events, which I also loved being a part of. My role quickly expanded to helping at the business office, selling cars, acting as a service advisor, and eventually as the Assistant Service Manager at BMW/MINI Langley. Recently, I came to OpenRoad Lexus Richmond to pursue an exciting new role of Business Development Manager. Open Road truly believes in the philosophy of “promoting within”, and I am a product of that. I was fortunate enough to have started my career in the car industry with one of the best General Managers in the business. He truly saw my talents and pushed me harder to not only do better – but to reach for more. I was never limited with where I wanted to go and what I wanted to learn, as long as I worked hard and proved myself. I truly owe him my career. My love for this business comes from dealing with people – both with our employees and the customers. I love building and being a part of a team, but my passion for customer service and creating the best guest experience trumps all. Every day is something new- in this industry you just 18

don’t have the same day, every day. My inspiration also comes from my 5-year-old daughter. I want her to see that you can do anything and go anywhere if you work hard enough and put your mind to it. When I’m not spending time with my daughter – I love playing baseball, I’ve played for over 20 years and have just taken up golf over the last 2 or 3 year. I love participating in just about any sport – and I’m defiantly a selfproclaimed “foodie”. My favourite car right not hast to be the 2015 Lexus RCF! Amazing power and the dive is unbelievable. The two things I won’t leave home without – sunglasses and Tom Ford lipstick!

TAX TIPS ‘‘

A

s a Canadian independent owner-operator, there are many opportunities for you to save on the tax that you pay on your hardearned cash. In this issue I will talk about the five most basic but important tips to help yourself when it comes to being an owner-operator. Over the next few issues I will shed some light on the benefits of incorporating and how to incorporate, is incorporating right for you, running your incorporated company, and the tax pitfalls within an incorporated structure. MEALS: As a truck driver you can claim 80% of all meals and beverages or $17.00 per meal for a maximum of 3 meals a day that you are working on the road. In order to qualify for the 80% deductibility you must be a long-haul trucker and you have to prove that you are one for the deduction to count. Also, keep in mind that if you are working in the U.S. or have some meals while down there on the road you can claim the exchange rate (yearly average) on the meal as well. Be aware that you will also need to fill out the TL2 tax form to claim your meals when filing your taxes. If you are not able to track all of your receipts you can claim a reasonable per diem of $70 Canadian per day based on your logbook for when you were working, however a word of caution it is always best to have receipts. INCORPORATE: One of the most important steps an owner-operator can take is to form a corporation. Incorporating allows for greater flexibility in determination of income and expense deductibility and the amount you personally report and are taxed on. Incorporating is especially important if you plan on paying family members such as your spouse or children for work done within the company to income split. A simple solution to avoid any 20

DRK News / Views / Stuff attribution rules with income splitting is to have your spouse be the sole shareholder in the company with you as the salaried employee (keep in mind your situation may be different and always consult with a Chartered Professional Accountant). With the kids make sure that they are actually working and that everything is documented as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) can challenge your expenses and revise deducted amounts. LOGBOOKS & RECEIPTS: It is important to keep receipts in the event that expenses and purchases are challenged by the CRA. Also, it helps your accountant and yourself when going back through the books to determine what that certain expense was for. Many owner-operators only keep their logbooks for three months, but if you’re using your logbook to validate your meal allowances then it becomes a tax document and must be kept for seven years. With the CRA increasing the number of audits, especially on meals, a lot of owneroperators do not have the right documentation in place. Keeping the logbook can save you thousands of dollars. KNOW YOUR ACCOUNTANT: Find a good Chartered Professional Accountant who specializes in the industry, cares about your business and is a good fit with you personally. While they may cost more than a regular accountant or your family member, finding a good Chartered Professional Accountant is like finding a good mechanic. They will save you tens of thousands of dollars in the long run.

ot too long ago, I had a gentleman walk into my shop inquiring about security systems. Naturally I go through my routine set of questions to qualify him and really find out his needs in building his security system. What I found out was he drove a 2006 Ford F-250, which had been stolen and eventually recovered. The driver’s door had been punched out and the ignition tumbler needed to be replaced due to the thief damaging it in order to steal the vehicle (no factory immobilizer). The biggest problem was the customer used the vehicle for work. It had on the back, a full storage canopy and at the time, it was full of valuable tools and supplies. So while the police were spending time trying to locate the vehicle, the customer was losing business, because he could not operate, thus directly affecting his cash flow. Most of the tools had been taken out and most likely resold on the street. And to top it off, the vehicle is somewhat tainted just knowing someone has violated the vehicle with the sole intention of quick personal gain at the expense of another individual. The customer and I had a good heart to heart conversation and I was able to spec out and install a security system that would monitor the truck as well as the rear storage, disable the starter line when armed, and the system would notify him if the vehicle were ever tampered with. We even installed a Smartphone integration module so he could control and GPS track the vehicle all from his phone (as long as the vehicle and he were within cell phone 22

reception). In hind sight if he had made the investment from the beginning, there would have been a very good chance the thief would not have been able to steal or even attempt to tamper with the vehicle at all. The customer is still running his business and quite well. He just acquired a second truck and we will be outfitting it with a proper security system as well. In today’s highly competitive markets businesses have to

optimize operations to have an edge. Businesses with fleets are no exception. Understanding how a fleet is being run can help cut unnecessary costs and boost efficiencies. Consider installing GPS trackers in vehicles. They do not limit autonomy for employees but allow an employer to analyze exactly how and where their vehicles are running for daily activities. Schedules and routes can be optimized by using tools like this which will save time and fuel costs. Having GPS trackers also adds security for a business owner investment in their vehicles and their contents. Many thieves will steal the whole vehicle and bring it to a secured location; that way, they have more time to go through the vehicle and its contents. For entrepreneurs who may only run one or a few vehicles, using a product like Viper SmartStart in conjunction with

their Viper security system is an easy way to track and control the vehicle via their smartphone or computer. Another useful tool to help protect drivers on the road is using a dash cam. Many accidents happen without witnesses and it’s very difficult to figure what actually happened after the accident. Utilizing this tool will make sure the authorities can see what actually happened, making sure insurance premiums for a business are not affected if the driver was not at fault. EATING WITH PASH-ION Pash Brar Mobile Leasing Rep. at Auto One Leasing LP

I

had a recent trip to Whistler and immediately headed online to look for great Italian food. I stumbled on Quattro restaurant in the Delta Pinnacle Hotel. I booked my reservation through Open Table. Located in Whistler Village, it was nice to be able to walk over from my hotel. The entrance has lovely iron gates and painted scenery to greet you. The wine list is extensive and beautiful bottles are encased and on display throughout. The atmosphere is perfect for a romantic evening out with painted ceilings reminiscent of the Venetian in Las Vegas. We were greeted warmly by our server Eduardo who had great knowledge of all the food and wine. He bragged about the fresh bread that was just baked. Two types were brought out, but from the description I was expecting it hot out of the oven, and it was cold. It tasted good but it was served with butter. My pet peeve at any Italian restaurant is butter with bread. It should be high quality olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar! Getting over the cold bread we ordered an antipasto platter. This is one of the signatures of the restaurant. There were a few fish options on the platter that I requested to be swapped. We had two types of house made sausage, duck, rosemary breadsticks,

herbed breaded tomato and a risotto ball. I enjoyed all of them and definitely a nice way to start off the night. In a higher end restaurant such as this, one thing i enjoy is creating my own food. Who needs a menu when you have high skilled staff in the kitchen? I made changes on the antipasto platter and now i created my own meal. I felt like gnocchi with a cheese sauce that wasn’t on the menu, but that’s what I ordered and was very pleased the kitchen accommodated. Why not order what you crave? My friend had the pasta Quattro special which was spaghetti with chicken, black beans and red pepper flakes. I’ve never seen my friend enjoy pasta, but he finished his plate! I had a bite and it was delicious and pasta al dente! For dessert I was disappointed there was no cheesecake. This time i knew i couldn’t get them to bake me a cake, so i settled for a molten Callebaut chocolate lava cake. It was served with house made chocolate gelato, as distinguished by how rapidly it melts. The cake was good at first, but the two chocolate combination started weighing me down, and suddenly I had the sugar sweats! Chocolate cake that intense needs something to break it up, so if it was vanilla gelato, it would have been perfect. There is a five course Roman feast and a five pasta sampler, both requiring a two person minimum. There is also another location called Gusto di Quattro in North Vancouver if Whistler is too far for you. Both locations offer caterlng as well. The North Vancouver opens weekdays for lunch and both Whistler and North Vancouver are open daily for dinner. For a memorable night of enjoying good food and drink with good friends, I highly recommend Quattro.

2015 Nissan Juke

I

f you’re in the market for a quirky-looking, nimble, urban-oriented compact SUV, definitely check out the 2015 Nissan Juke. It seems like Nissan designers were free to design a vehicle that would get noticed, and it does. With lights and taillights inspired by the 370Z, a fiercely sculpted hood, and aggressive muscular lines, it’s anything but ordinary. Under the hood is a fantastic 1.6 turbo-charged engine that provides a great driving experience, especially when you choose the manual transmission. What’s more, with seating for five, you can take the Juke downtown or up to the ski slopes and park in a space just a tad bigger than a Smart car. On the inside, the Juke can be customized with some great technology, like Bluetooth, navigation, and even a 360-degree camera. Speaking of customization, personalize the Juke for your tastes by using Nissan’s Juke Colour Studio. The Juke may be the perfect vehicle for a young couple, downtown residents, or even a new family. The 2015 Juke starts at $20, 498.

2016 BMW 7-Series

W

hen BMW launched its introductory video on the new 7-series a few weeks ago, everyone took notice. I mean, the new flagship could be parked by remote control – how cool is that! According to BMW, the new 7-series is the most technologically advanced vehicle in its class. For example, it features new BMW Laserlight, which provide substantially better visibility up to 600 meters. For drivers, there is Gesture Control, which allows the control of a multitude of functions, such as answering calls and increasing/decreasing volume, by simple hand movements. For the right rear passenger, relax in the new Executive Lounge, which features maximum comfort through a wide range of adjustment options, such as reclining seat, massage function, a footrest, and a folding table. And of course, with BMW, you get an amazing engine and top-notch build quality. The innovations continue to the outside of the car, where the new Active air stream kidney grille can open and close, depending on performance, aerodynamics, and consumption rates. Pricing will be released soon.

2015 Can-Am Spyder F3-S

W

hen I first saw the three-wheeled motorcycles a few years ago, I was definitely impressed. Here was a great machine that could provide more safety while still allowing a “motorcycle-like” open air feeling. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to ride the new Can-Am Spyder F3-S. The F3-S is a great looking motorcycle, oops, machine. With an all-black paint scheme, its stature is brash and aggressive, especially with the huge lower, open-mouth cowl. The F3-S is powered by a Rotax 1330cc high torque engine that is mated with a 6-speed transmission, with reverse. If you’re a motorcycle rider, getting used to Can-am’s ride takes a little time; there is no leaning and when taking turns and corners, you have to fight physics and get used to a turn-and-push behaviour. Once you master this, then riding this three-wheeler is quite fun, and for the inexperienced riders, more stable and confidence-inspiring. Take one for a test ride for sure. We’ll have an in-depth review very soon. Price starts at $20, 999. 26

2015 Yamaha Stryker

F

ollowing closely the footsteps of the Bolt, the Yamaha Stryker is a Star cruiser that features a modern, minimalist style. The Stryker is distinct from any other bike in the heritage line-up and features what Yamaha calls their “tattoo” look. It has a kicked-out chopper-style front end, little chrome, and modern LED taillights. From the factory, it rolls out with either a “raven” gloss black paint scheme, or for about $300 more, matte grey with tank graphics. Powered by a liquid-cooled 1304cc 60-degree V-twin, the Stryker is not only aggressive looking, but also packs a punch. It has four valves per cylinder, which provide enough power to get this bike moving fast. Remember though, this is not a sport bike so take it easy when first riding it. However, I found that for an aggressive looking bike that has extended forks, it’s pretty nimble in the city. The Stryker is definitely a head-turner, especially if you get the matte black paint. Price starts at $12, 599.

Honda Ready With a $184,000 RC213V-S MotoGP replica

H

onda has announced that the prototype Moto GP replica it showed at EICMA last year is to become a road-going reality. Based on the RC213V that MotoGP champion Mark Marquez won two championships on, the RC213V-S is billed by the company as its “absolute MotoGP machine for the street.” Some of that depends on what country the street is in (more on that in a moment), but there is no arguing with its collectability, exclusiveness or desirability. Priced at $184,000 US, an application only gets you a consultation with no promise of a motorcycle whatsoever. Production is expected to be kept to less than 250 units. Manufacturers use racing as their laboratory on wheels and the RC213V-S is a direct result of Honda’s track to road policy, but there are some compromises in this transition. Pneumatic valves have been replaced with coil springs, the famous seamless gearbox was exchanged for a more standard road version and output from the extremely compact 1000 cc, 90 degree V4 varies by country, depending on public road eligibility rules and regulations. Europe and Australia are offered a 160 hp version, the American market gets roughly 100 hp and in Japan, it’s an even paltrier 70 hp. The fix for this is an as yet to be priced optional race-track only kit that jumps the power up to a massive 215 hp. The kit will not be available in the USA. The RC 213V-S is 12 kg heavier than the GP racer (170 kg compared to158), but that includes lights and street equipment. With the kit option it drops back down to 160 kg. Honda will begin accepting “order entry” for the RC 213V-S on July 13. July / August 2015

2015 Dodge Charger

2015

DODGE

I

Charger

t’s a good time to be a fan of muscle cars. As you read this, Chevrolet is set to unleash its all-new 2016 Camaro; Ford is readying the latest Shelby-edition Mustang, the GT350, with the most powerful naturally-aspirated engine the company has ever produced; and Dodge has two muscle car models, the Charger and Challenger, both available in 707-hp Hellcat trim, the most potent of three V8-powered hotrod versions. But these cars are not all about appealing to motorheads. Both the Camaro and the Mustang can now be specified with turbocharged four-cylinder engines, a nod to the current craze for coaxing performance potential out of a fuel-efficient, small-displacement motor. Turbocharging isn’t on the menu at Dodge, but their engine line starts with the company’s 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, a motor that also powers the brand’s minivans, crossovers, and SUVs. It’s when you consider family-friendliness that the Charger starts to look interesting: as a four-door sedan, it stands out from the Mustang, the Camaro, and Dodge’s own Challenger as a more attractive family vehicle option. While a family car with V8 power is awfully appealing to gearheads like us, the idea of buying gas for a daily-driven Charger Hellcat is decidedly less enticing, and that’s where the thriftier V6 engine comes in. The 3.6 may trade power for better fuel economy, but as we discovered in a week driving an all-wheel drive SXT model with the Rallye Appearance Package, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

28

July / August 2015

Chris Chase

2015 Dodge Charger

With 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque (300 and 264 with the Rallye package), the 3.6 is no monster when pitted against the Charger’s 1,900-kg curb weight (a rear-drive model is about 100 kg lighter), but the eight-speed automatic transmission translates that output into decent, if unexciting, acceleration. More satisfying is the nicely-tuned exhaust that makes the engine sound more interesting than its pedestrian roots would suggest. Punch the sport mode button on the centre stack: the transmission will hold gears longer in acceleration, and downshift more quickly in highway passing maneuvers. Sport mode also sharpens throttle response, giving the illusion of more power. There’s a fair expectation that a big sedan will be comfortable, and the Charger mostly meets it. The front seats are broad and supportive without being too aggressively bolstered. My quibbles are that the bottom cushion was a bit firm for long stints behind the wheel and the headrest is positioned quite far to the rear, with no fore-and-aft adjustment. No such trouble in the rear, where the seats are softer and offer plenty of legroom. Rear-seat passengers will note that the closest thing to their heads is the rear window, which extends further into the roofline than in most sedans. Dodge has made massive progress in interior quality in the last few years, and it shows in the Charger. Our tester’s red-and-black combo looked sharp, and only the hard plastics on the lower dash panels gave away that this car starts out as a relatively inexpensive big sedan. The Chrysler Uconnect touchscreen display proved as responsive and easy to use here as in other Chrysler vehicles I’ve tested, and the ‘Beats’ stereo that comes bundled in the Rallye package sounded pretty good. Chrysler’s tech extends into the Charger’s gauge cluster, where a colour screen between the gauges displays either trip information or the driver’s choice of a near-ridiculous amount of other data. You can choose to view digital representations of analog fuel and engine temp gauges; they look slick, but the tiny red gauge “needles” are tough to see at a glance. Likewise, the speedometer markings are a bit vague, so I tended to call up the available digital speed readout. Wide-opening doors make it easy to get in and out, but the only interior door pull is in the armrest, which ends up very far away when the door is open. We drove this car from our home in Ottawa on an 11-day road trip to New Brunswick and PEI, and packed the car accordingly; it took some creativity, but we fit two large suitcases and plenty of other gear in the trunk. On the down side, loading cargo requires a high, SUV-like lift over the rear bumper. In the past, large cars were known for pillowy rides, but that’s not the case here: the Charger rides firmly (almost too much so) on

rough pavement, and it was only with the weight of our luggage on board that I found the car comfortable over most surfaces. One small last nitpick: the foot-operated parking brake stands out here, since Chrysler has moved to electric parking brakes in many

of its other models. For my tester’s $45,550 price tag, the Charger came with niceties like adjustable pedals, auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, power-adjustable steering column, and the upgraded stereo. The technology package included useful safety kit such as blind spot and cross path detection (the latter of which proved very useful in this long car), adaptive cruise control, forward collision and lane departure warning, and advanced brake assist. Navigation and a backup camera were also included, among other items, making this car a strong value for fans of safety and convenience. All that considered, perhaps the best thing about the Charger is that even in my test car’s relatively basic form, it still turns heads, as the kid riding in the back of the Dodge Dart we passed on the highway and the 20-something guy crossing the street in front of us at a red light can attest. A V6-powered Charger may not be a muscle car like its eight-cylinder siblings, but it’s still got attitude, and that goes a long way when you’ve sacrificed some performance in favour of everyday practicality. 2015 Apna Truck Show

APNA Truck Show 2015 Breaks All Records

July / August 2015

T

he APNA Truck Show 2015 was a great success, breaking all previous records. Even the beautiful sunny weather couldn’t keep the crowds away from the biennial show, which took place at Tradex in Abbotsford, BC on June 13-14. The 2015 show set an all-time record for attendance with over 14,500 attendees, surpassing the previous record set in 2013. In addition, this year, exhibit floor space was sold out – another first for the APNA Truck Show. The show management team was clearly happy with their efforts in bringing the exhibitors and crowds to the show. APNA Truck Show Senior Manager Jagdeep Dhaliwal was proud to say, “Our team puts in almost a year of hard work to ensure this event is successful. We think we’ve done a good job in promoting and executing a great event; just look at the line-up outside.”

2015 Apna Truck Show

The APNA Truck Show, which had humble beginnings in 2010 at Langley Events Centre, has grown to become the most anticipated truck show in Western Canada, with attendees coming from as far away as California. This year, an automotive section was added, which showcased vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Jaguar, Infiniti, and Porsche, and motorcycles from Barnes Harley Davidson in Langley. Visitors had the opportunity to view a variety of luxury vehicles, including the new Jaguar F-Type Coupe, Porsche Panamera, and Infiniti QX80. In addition to the new vehicles, there was a classic car section as well, with vehicles going back to the 1940’s. It was definitely an area of appeal for the attendees. APNA Truck Show 2015, in association with Barnes Harley Davidson in Langley, BC was proud to give away a custom-built Harley Davidson Street 750 motorcycle, valued at over $18, 000. This custom bike was one of four that was built for a Canadian competition. The Barnes Harley Davidson booth was busy for both days, bringing in close to 8, 000 entry ballots for the draw. Kevin Chow, Marketing Director of the Barnes Group, said, “We wanted to do something that reflected the value of the Barnes Group, and thus, giving away a custom-built motorcycle at the APNA Truck Show was a perfect fit.” Speaking of values, this year also marked an incredible VIP Dinner Night. The event, which was sold out, not only allowed industry professionals to mingle and enjoy great food, but raise funds for an amazing organization. In 2013, the VIP Dinner Night raised over $17, 000 and for 2015, the goal was to reach $20, 000. Well, this year, the VIP Dinner Night surpassed their goal and raised

a record-setting $23, 000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation. The APNA management was humbled by the generosity: “We know that the trucking community has big hearts, but being able to raise that much money in less than a half hour is unbelievable. From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank all those who made a donation.” Global TV’s Sonia Beeksma, who co-hosted the event, was amazed by the generosity of those in the trucking industry. “I surely look forward to being a part of the next show,” she said. You can watch Global TV’s coverage at: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=1vysrOFKTh8. The performance stage was abuzz for both days, providing crowds with a variety of entertainment. Local and international artists and bands performed and showcased their talents. To keep the children occupied, there was a bouncy castle and face-painting. By all measures and feedback, the 2015 APNA Truck Show was extremely successful. Exhibitors at this heavy-duty trucking event were pleased with the marketing and exposure created that brought endless crowds to the show. Roman Tomica, General Manager of First Truck Centre Vancouver, said, “This is a great event and the crowds are huge. The APNA team does a fantastic job of putting on such a great event and we look forward to the next one.” His words were echoed by Brad Thiessen, Vice-President and General Manager of Daimler Trucks Canada. The management team would like to express their gratitude to all exhibitors, attendees, and volunteers who made this show possible. And, based on this year’s show, we can only expect what the next APNA Truck Show will bring in 2017. July / August 2015

Back to the Future - DeLorean

f you watched any movies in the 1980’s, chances are you watched Back to the Future. Without a doubt, one of Back to the Future’s unsung heroes is the DeLorean time machine. Built over the course of nearly thirty years and using his entire family fortune in order to fulfill his vision of the “Flux Capacitor”, Doc Brown selected the DeLorean DMC-12 as his vehicle of choice for traveling through time. After the success of the first film, the sequels all featured the DeLorean in various forms. Thanks to the stainless steel construction of the DeLorean, flux dispersal is generated at an optimum level from the Flux Capacitor, providing the entire vehicle and its passengers a smooth passage through the space-time continuum during temporal displacement. The DeLorean DMC-12 was the brainchild of automotive engineer John Z. DeLorean, a former executive at General Motors who’s most notable contribution was the Pontiac GTO. He founded the DeLorean Motor Company in 1974. The DMC-12, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and engineered by Lotus Cars of England, consisted

of stainless steel body panels, a rear-mounted 2.85 litre V-6 PRV (Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) engine, and stylish gullwing doors, which only require 14-inches (35.5cm) of side clearance to open. The car was built in a brand new state-of-the-art factory located in Dunmurray, Northern Ireland, just outside of Belfast. The first DMC-12 rolled off the assembly line in January 1981. All DeLoreans came from the factory in bare stainless steel (there were no factory painted cars), and were available with either a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic, all with standard interior colors of either black or grey. DeLorean Motor Company filed for bankruptcy in 1982, and the factory was closed. The last car was manufactured in December 1982. Approximately 9,200 cars were built, consisting of three model years, 1981, 1982 and 1983. The Back to the Future DeLorean has become an icon, with models still on display at Hollywood’s Universal Studios. Who knows, with the prospect of another Back to the Future movie, we could see the DeLorean again.

OpenRoad Toyota Charity Golf Tournament Raises $25,000

O

n June 11, DRK Magazine was honoured to be invited to OpenRoad Toyota’s first annual charity golf tournament, held at Morgan Creek Golf Course. The golf tournament successfully raised $25, 000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation BC & Yukon, a non-profit organization that grants wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. For a child and his/her family, it could be a gift wish, travel wish, celebrity wish, fantasy or experiential wish.

“OpenRoad has been a long-time supporter of the Make-AWish Foundation, and we believe in giving back to the community we live in. Having their wish granted means the world to the children, but it requires a lot of effort and money. Every dollar counts,” says Barry Chyzowski, General Manager of OpenRoad Toyota in Richmond. Over 140 golfers came out to support the tournament in South Surrey. The tournament was followed by a live auction, emceed by CTV Sportscaster and CTV Sports Director, Perry Solkowski, and a

special guest appearance by one of the wish children and her family. “It really puts things into perspective when you meet with wish families and hear about the challenges they go through,” mentions Patrick Lau, General Manager of OpenRoad Toyota in Port Moody. “We were fortunate in that our first-ever golf tournament received so much support.” DRK Magazine would like to congratulate the OpenRoad Group for an amazing event that will change the lives of many children and their families. We look forward to next year’s event.

2016 Volvo XC 90

A

s in the past few years, 2015 proves to be another year of exciting new SUV’s that are arriving sooner than later for the Canadian markets. One of the most anticipated, and on Canadian shores already, is the return of Volvo, with its all new XC90 7-seater SUV. The test XC90 SUV was generously provided by Volvo of Vancouver (Dilawri Group of Companies). Upon first laying eyes on it, I was treated to a smorgasbord of details. One can see that Volvo spared no expense in designing the exterior of the urban hauler, which is perfect for anyone who is considering the atypical luxury SUV that is uniquely un-German. Placed in the XC90’s muscular square-jawed front, we can immediately see Volvo’s signature grille paired with a set of brilliantly displayed LED headlights and fog lights that ensure maximum visibility and illumination in the harshest of conditions. The size of the vehicle is comparable to most 7 seaters in this segment, but offers a different approach to the interior. The first thing you notice about the interior is the distinct Volvo lumbar seats and the rich wood paneling that is used. The seats have a multitude of adjustments ensuring that whether your ride is a long one or short, you will be very much in comfort during the entire trip. Volvo has spent considerable resources to ensure that comfort and support is present for the occupants. The wood paneling is a great touch, giving the interior a much more elegant and refined look. Replacing the traditional engine start/ stop button with a crystal knob, one simply has to turn this knob to bring the XC90’s 2.0 liter turbo and supercharged engine to life and fire up all of the available 316 horses. Acceleration is smooth, fast and I could barely notice that it was a 4-cylinder engine driving the spacious 7-seater up the highway. Inside the cabin, A/C, navigation, backup and front cameras, heated seats,

satellite radio, lane assist, are all easily accessible from the very intuitive touch display that houses and controls pretty much every technological feature in this vehicle. As mentioned earlier, acceleration is smooth, without any hiccups, and unlike Volvos of yester-years, the XC90 drives like a dream thanks to its all new suspension and air spring system. Tight around corners, comfortable around bumps and potholes, and smooth as silk on highways, the new platform of the XC90 gives us avid motorists a glimpse of what is to come from Sweden. Compared to its German competitors, there’s a smoothness to how it rides and glides, engaging the driver in any location at any time. There are so many more fine details that can be discussed about this vehicle, but in all honesty, you have to drive it to really experience it; and yes, Volvo is back. The all-new XC90, Swedish built, Scandinavian in design, atypically un-German is sure to surprise you as it did me. ** model provided was a nicely optioned XC90 Inscription equipped with R-design wheels. 1. What is the difference between a supercharger and a turbo-charger? Can you tell which one would have more advantages? The concept is very similar as they are both compressors pushing more air into the engine, creating higher horsepower. A supercharger uses engine power and spins off the crankshaft, while a turbo charger spins using recirculated exhaust gases. It is more common to see turbochargers on smaller engines since they do not absorb any already applicable engine power. A turbocharger uses what would be “wasted” exhaust gases to boost engine performance significantly and increases overall efficiency. Turbochargers are usually sized to create the most power at a certain rpm range; outside of this, you may experience what is called turbo lag. When the spool up is pushing for the ultimate power boost, when it hits, can be exhilarating or scary to some. Superchargers are more commonly found on bigger motors as they require engine power to create engine power. One advantage to a supercharger is that there is little spool up time, because since it spins directly on the crankshaft, it doesn’t take as much/any time to deliver the added boost of air/power, meaning no lag. 2. If I’m doing most of my driving in and around the city, is it really necessary to carry a spare tire in my car? It just seems like extra weight. You may be right about the extra weight. However, if you ever get a flat or have a tire blow out, you will not even be able to drive to the nearest gas station. I’m not sure it is worth the weight reduction for the peace of mind of having a spare tire for the emergency situations. A lot of newer vehicles come with run-flat tires; they help in eliminating the extra weight and the hassle of swapping out a flat tire, especially for city driving. If the vehicle is not already equipped with run-flat tires, you may want think about retrofitting them on. The only potential down fall is that you will have to purchase a run-flat tire rim style as well as the tires, and the tires tend to be a bit

Just Ask Leah more expensive. 3. When buying a new vehicle, I’m always being asked to buy rust proofing, undercoating, and paint protection packages. In your opinion, are these worth buying because it’s more added cost? I am not a big fan of the additional spray on undercoating offered from dealers. From my experience, most vehicles already come stock with some sort of coating on the chassis as a rust preventer. The additional spray-on coating surely helps, but I’m not sure if it’s really needed here on the west coast. It also looks messy, and covers a lot of the bolts and access points on the frame and under body. 4. Our 4x4 has a lockable differential. How often should I have the differential serviced even though we barely engage the 4x4? Even if you do not engage the 4x4 frequently, the fluid still gets worn as the gears freewheel inside the differential. It is highly recommended to stick to the manufacturer’s recommendation for the timeline for differential servicing. This is usually around every 20, 000 km, depending on the manufacturer. If you happen to go off-roading and use the 4x4 often, I would change it more frequently. If, when off-roading, you submerge your “diff’s” in water, be sure to check and change the fluid shortly after as the front and rear “diff’s” usually have breathers where water and moisture can enter. This dilutes the viscosity of the fluid and causes wear on the gears.

Project Livewire

Yep, It’s a Harley

Project

here’s one thing about Harley fans – it’s that they are truly fans of the look, feel, and emotions that owning and riding a Harley Davidson brings. About thirty years ago, Harley Davidson riders were not seen as role models in society. Nowadays, the company, and its riding population, has evolved into a brand that caters to those who want products that exemplify their status. Everyone from two-wheeled fans to executives of businesses want a classic Harley Davidson. So when Harley unveiled their new venture, Project Livewire, I’m sure HD management was on edge on how the public would react to the launch of an electric sportbike prototype. The Project LiveWire electric motorcycle is completely unlike any in Harley Davidson’s 111 year history. To begin, it’s not for sale; Harley Davidson Chief Marketing Officer Mark-Hans Richer said it was specifically designed for the purpose of seeking insight of, “the features and experience riders expect from an electric Harley Davidson motorcycle. Project LiveWire has reset expectations about what a Harley Davidson motorcycle can be.” So what was my impression of this new motorcycle? Well, keep reading. On May 22, I was invited as one of the few journalists to the Harley Davidson Project LiveWire Canada Experience tour, which started at Barnes Harley Davidson in Langley. 42

July / August 2015

There was a squadron of Project LiveWire bikes, ready to be ridden. Also present was the HD Street 750 that was ridden by Captain America (played by Chris Evans) in the new Avengers: Age of Ultron movie. As mentioned before, Project LiveWire is not your typical Harley. It is a minimalist Buell-like sportbike and for a first attempt, the design is pleasing, with somewhat of a futuristic look. Its all-black paint scheme, with hints of red, make it stand out. A very unique feature is that the electric motor, which puts out about 74 hp, is mounted longitudinally, under the frame. The frame is cast aluminum, as is the swingarm. Overall, fit and finish is excellent. As I climbed onto the HD electric bike, I noticed the minimal theme carried to the gauge cluster, with is pretty much a TFT “dashboard.” The screen shows power, speed, and range – pretty much all you need to know. Seating position is quite comfortable and since the bike only weighs about 460 pounds, it’s easy to handle for most riders, big or small. Once you turn on the power, there is no firing, popping, or rumbling – it’s quiet. If you’ve ever been in an electric car, it’s the same thing. After we got settled onto our bikes, we were on the road for the tour ride. Pulling out of the parking lot, our riding group received lots of attention, with many a finger pointing towards our direction. Let alone the

whine, the bike is quiet, and takes some getting used to, since most Jag Dhatt bikers want to be heard jag@jgkmedia.ca for safety reasons. The sound, which Harley Davidson says is unique to this motorcycle, is a direct result of architecture chosen for the motor. The whine comes from the bevel gear that shifts the longitudinal motor’s output 90 degrees and sends it to the belt final drive. Throttle response is instantaneous and if you’re not careful, will surprise the pants off you. Harley claims a 0-60 mph run in only about 4 seconds, and I concur completely. In the twenty minutes I had on the bike, I found the overall ride to be quite comfortable. Suspension is stiff, as it should be, but is definitely not harsh. Steering is quick and neutral, but at times, under pressure, can feel a tad heavy. I came away from this test ride with a new appreciation for Harley’s attempt at stepping out of their comfort zone and building a motorcycle that goes against tradition. Most other test riders I spoke with had similar reactions, although some die-hard Harley fans were not impressed with this new direction. One person even went on to say, “That’s not a Harley.” Well, for now, Project LiveWire is only a prototype, but in my opinion, this bike is every bit ready for production.

Three tips for the perfect road trip (NC) Road-trip season is upon us, which means many families will be loading up their vehicles and heading out on the open road. The family road trip is a favourite Canadian pastime and a great way to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and impressive sights this country has to offer. Creating a memorable experience for all members of the family comes down to planning. Proper preparation not only makes a road trip more enjoyable, it ensures the safety of all of those taking part. Here are a few simple steps to help you achieve just that: Plan your route in detail. When it comes to route planning, technology is a great ally. If you have a specific destination in mind, but aren’t entirely sure of how to get there, do some research online by browsing travel websites to see if there are cities or sights worth stopping for along the way. Once you have your stops planned, use a GPS device to help you find them. Many vehicles have this technology built in, but you can also use a smartphone. Today’s GPS devices even provide real-time updates on construction and traffic flow, which can help you avoid delays. Just remember that distracted driving laws forbid you from inputting your destination while driving, so enter this information before heading out. Make sure your car is road-ready. James Hall, an insurance expert with Western Financial Group, says there are several steps involved in making sure your vehicle is ready to take on a long road trip. “Checking tire pressure and your car’s oil level is the bare minimum,” Hall explains. “It does take some extra time, but taking

your car into your local mechanic or dealership before a long trip will help you find any hidden issues that have the potential to ruin your travel plans. Also double-check that your registration and insurance information is up-to-date and that you have it with you in the car.” Hall also recommends that drivers purchase a roadside assistance program, such as Access Roadside Assistance that covers costs for assistance calls, battery boosts, flat tires, fuel delivery, towing to the nearest service station and any additional costs for hotels and food that may be incurred due to a delay in your travel plans. Break up the driving. Even a strong supply of snacks, music and movies won’t keep passengers from getting restless after several hours in a car. Breaking up the driving with frequent stops will allow everyone to stretch their legs, expend some pent up energy and ready themselves for the next stretch. Taking a break is especially important for the driver, says Hall. “Whoever is driving needs to feel fresh and focused,” he says. “Ideally, you’ll be able to switch drivers every couple of hours, but if that’s not possible, take a 20 minute break to help recharge. Driving when tired poses serious risks.” One of the advantages of travelling by car is being able to set your itinerary and pace. Follow the steps above, and you next road trip will be one to remember.
