DRK Editorial

Editor’s Note

Normally, during this time of the year, many people are enjoying some late winter skiing on the local mountains. Mother Nature, it seems, had different plans with such a “winterless” winter. On the flip side, ICBC reported many fewer accidents due to the unseasonably warmer temperatures. Now that March is upon us, flowers are already blooming, lawns are being mowed, and yours truly has already had signs of seasonal allergies. Like many other parts of life, this winter has been completely unpredictable. And if you take a look at the weather in Eastern Canada and North-Eastern USA, where there were blizzards and blistering cold months, people would agree. In this issue, we take a look at some amazing new vehicles. DRK Magazine was invited to the 2015 Nissan Murano Media Event in Whistler, BC. We were one of the first to test drive the new Murano and the consensus was that it’s a great vehicle. Thanks to Nissan Canada, media guests also had the opportunity to take in a run on the Olympic bobsled course in Whistler – what a rush! Want Jag Dhatt another rush? Take a look at the new Volvo S60 Polestar – as my Editor-in-Chief cousin eloquently put it, “This car rips!” We also review the new Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, the only light-duty truck powered by a diesel engine. And if you’re gearing up for riding season, take a look at the new Kawasaki Ninja 1000 ABS. With the 2015 Vancouver International Show almost here, make sure to block off a day or two to view the latest and greatest in cars, trucks, SUV’s, mini-vans and everything in between. DRK Magazine will attend the Press Event; look forward to our coverage. Even though we’ve had some record high temperatures, remember that it’s still chilly in the evenings and early mornings. A local tire expert recommends that, even though it seems warm, delay switching over to your summer tires because you just never know. Life is unpredictable. Audi Reveals New headlights On New R8

T

he R8 uses LED headlights, which can be supplemented by a laser high beam lighting module as an option. The new R8 will set new standards among high performance sports cars – including in its lighting technology. As an option, the latest car development by Audi can be equipped with a laser spot as the high beam headlight. The special appeal of laser lighting is that it uses high-intensity laser diodes, which generate a lot of light energy from a very small component. Compared to LED high-beam headlights, laser high beams attain nearly twice the lighting range. Each headlight contains one laser module that operates with four high-intensity laser diodes. This module bundles the four intense blue light laser beams. Then a phosphor converter transforms the blue light into pure white light. An identifying characteristic of the laser headlights is their blue light signature. Standard equipment in the new R8 includes an LED headlight system. All lighting functions are produced with 37 LEDs per headlight.

New Malibu To Be Unveiled at New York Auto Show

T

he 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will be officially unveiled at the New York International Auto Show next month. The new-generation Malibu will offer more safety and connectivity technologies while also being lighter. Indeed, the new Malibu will be built on a new structure that is said to be about 300 pounds lighter than the current Malibu’s structure. According to General Motors, that will help the vehicle offer better fuel economy and improved handling. Visually, the new Malibu should showcase a sportier overall design: “The roofline has been stretched rearward giving a more sleek profile, while the front wheels have moved forward and front and rear overhangs have been reduced. Along with the sculpted body side, these cues help Malibu appear more dynamic and sophisticated.” After its world premiere in New York City, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will get ready to go on sale towards the end of 2015. General Motors will be offering more details every week until the car is officially unveiled in the Big Apple.

A New Lincoln Continental?

L

ike many other cars making a comeback, is it true that a 2016 Lincoln Continental could see the light of day? If there is any true behind these reports, there could be a return of the iconic luxury American car. As seen at previous car shows, a new Lincoln Continental will come furnished with a Zero Halliburton gears as well as Belvedere humidors. However, truth is that the Lincoln Continental 2016 could be technologically advanced. Although Lincoln hasn’t revealed any real information on a 2016 model, it was only Neil Young who alluded to his involvement with Lincoln. We will just have to wait and see. March / April 2015

Police on Look-Out for Man After He Crashes Stolen Truck

S

urrey RCMP are looking for a driver who fled from a stolen pickup truck after crashing into three other vehicles. Police say a black 2005 Ford pickup was heading northbound (in the 9800 block of 120th Avenue) in early March, when it lost control while trying to pass a vehicle. The pickup struck the vehicle before heading onto the median, crossing over it and crashing into two other vehicles in the southbound lanes. Police say the male driver then fled from the pickup, and despite the efforts of police service dogs and a helicopter, he has not been found. RCMP say the pickup had been reported stolen just a few hours earlier in Surrey. The other three vehicles involved were extensively damaged, but the occupants only received minor injuries and didn’t need to be hospitalized. Police are asking any witnesses to come forward and are urging the driver to do the right thing and turn himself in.

Jaguar and Bremont Announce Two New Wrist Watches

Ford Adds 400 Jobs at Oakville Plant

F

ord Motor Co. will add 400 new jobs in Oakville, Ont., to assemble the redesigned Ford Edge crossover vehicle for global markets in another sign that healthy vehicle sales are boosting the auto sector in Canada. The announcement will be

made Thursday at the Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd. plant where official production of the new version of the Edge is scheduled to begin. The hiring is in addition to the 1,000 jobs added last year and takes employment at the plant to 4,500 people. About half of the 1,000 jobs added last fall were insourced from suppliers. “The all-new Ford Edge is a true global vehicle,” said Joe Hinrichs, the auto maker’s president of the Americas. Ford will make right-hand drive and diesel versions of the mid-sized Edge and it will be shipped to Western Europe for the first time. The announcement of new Ford jobs comes two weeks after General Motors Co. said its Cami Automotive factory in Ingersoll, Ont., will build the next generation of the Chevrolet Equinox compact crossover and on the heels of a Honda Motor Co. Ltd. announcement that it will spend $857-million at its plant in Alliston, Ont., to build the redesigned Honda Civic.

Saskatoon Woman Wins Car in Tim Hortons Roll Up the Rim

W

J

aguar and Bremont have announced two new watch collaborations. These exciting introductions will make their global debut in March 2015. The two British companies are cementing their long-term partnership following an overwhelming response to the creation of six Bremont chronometers which complement each of the six ‘continuation’ lightweight E-type sports racing cars currently being built by Jaguar. These watches are both dedicated to the road-going Jaguar E-type which at its 1961 launch was not only the fastest production car in the world but, according to Enzo Ferrari, the most beautiful. In working to capture the E-type vehicle’s essence in a wrist watch, Design Director for Jaguar, Ian Callum and the creative team at Bremont honed in on another of its signature features - the dashboard. At its heart are the speedometer and tachometer (or ‘rev counter’) and it is these that inspired the look of the new Bremont Jaguar MKI and MKII watches. 8

ouldn’t you like to win a coffee or donut in the Tim Hortons Roll Up the Rim Contest? For some of us, it’s almost as fun as winning money in the Lotto – well, okay, not quite, but still puts a smile on your face when you see a Free Coffee. Well, imagine her surprise when Jessica Landrie won a brand new 2015 Toyota Camry as her prize. “I’ve heard a lot of people winning it but I never really thought they gave away 50 cars,” said Landrie. “I can’t believe I actually won a car.” Landrie enjoyed her large salted caramel latte earlier in February, but it was nothing compared to the prize. The second-year nursing student needed to answer a skill-testing question in order to win her new ride. Landrie was told she would be getting her new car in four to six weeks.

Hyundai Recalls 58,000 Cars in Canada

H

yundai is recalling about 263,000 cars in the U.S. and Canada because a sensor problem could cause drivers to lose power-assisted steering. The company has not reported any injuries or accidents. A representative for Hyundai Motor America wasn’t immediately available for comment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a sensor in the affected cars could detect a discrepancy in the steering input and signals and disable power-assisted steering as a result. Cars would revert to manual steering and require greater effort to steer at low speeds, raising the risk of a crash. Hyundai Motor America says it plans to notify owners and that dealers will fix the control unit of the electronic power steering at no cost. The affected cars include model years 2008 to 2010 of Elantras made between June 1, 2008 and April 30, 2010 and Elantra Touring vehicles made between Nov. 1, 2008 and April 30. The recall includes nearly 205,000 cars in the U.S. and about another 58,000 in Canada. Owners can contact Hyundai’s customer service at 1-855-671-3059.

Automotive Technicians in High Demand

S

o you spent four years getting your university degree, but in the end, did it lead you to a successful career in the industry of your choice? If you’re like most university grads, the degree seems to qualify you for nothing more than low-skilled service jobs in the GVRD. But, the automotive technician industry can’t seem to train people fast enough to

fill the vacant jobs. Despite offering education grants and scholarships, attractive apprenticeships and jobs that can command six-figure incomes, BC’s automotive industry is worried that they simply cannot find enough trained auto mechanics to fill the thousands of vacancies they face as aging mechanics retire from in the industry over the next decade. Blair Qualey, president and CEO of the New Car Dealers Association of BC, says, “Some of our members are going to lose up to half of their service technicians in the next ten years.” Qualey says his organization is trying to reach out to high school students and inform them of the vast upcoming careers in the automotive industry.

2015 Nissan Murano

NISSAN

2015

R

ecently, Nissan held the introductory press launch of its brand new flagship crossover Murano in Whistler, BC. Known for its world-class ski and golf facilities, this get-away location has everything for year-round activities. I remembering shooting one of my best golf games at the Whistler Golf Club, designed by golf legend, Arnold Palmer; what a great weekend. Lakeside chateaus, fine dining, and of course, home to the ski portion of the 2010 Winter Olympics – yes, this was the perfect venue for the Murano media launch. Media guests stayed at the Nita Lake Lodge, one of the Top 25 Hotels in Canada, nestled on the shores of a glacier-fed lake. With six brand new Murano’s parked front and center of the lodge VIP parking area, hotel guests wondered what was going on. And, as a surprise, Nissan Canada has asked us to bring along our “Need for Speed” mentality for a special media event. Okay, I was intrigued for sure. 12

Murano

The Outside: The 2015 Nissan Murano Media Event actually began at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia, located in downtown Vancouver. After a nice breakfast and meet-and-greet with fellow journalists, we went downstairs to the view the crossover. The Murano has always been on the forefront when it comes to design. Even the first two generations were great looking, contemporary vehicles; but owners were beginning to complain that styling, compared to some competitors, was becoming outdated. Nissan took people’s views seriously and came out with all new, flowing design that looks incredible. At first glance, you can’t tell that it’s the same vehicle as it looks nothing like its predecessors. At the front, the V-Motion nose, complete with a chrome insert, is what first captures the eyes – LED lights, projector lamps and a great bumper design complete the look. On the sides, the beltline rises up quickly towards the rear and meets the sloping roofline, making for a very sporty look. It’s almost like a wave came along the sides and chiseled out the design. One element I really like is that the B, C & D pillars are blacked out, making the roof float over the SUV. At the rear, the boomerang design is carried into the taillights. Our Platinum edition came complete with the 20” tire and wheel package. Malcolm Gunn, Jag Dhatt my co-pilot, and I both agreed that this Nissan Murano was jag@jgkmedia.ca the best so far. Our sentiments were shared by the number of people who walked by and gave a thumbs-up.

2015 Nissan Murano The Inside: If you thought the outside of the new Murano was nice, you’re in for a real treat once you step inside the Enhanced Premium Social Lounge for five. According to Nissan, the company is making the interior more of what you’re used to at home. For example, seat yourself in the NASA inspired Zero-Gravity leather seats and feel your troubles melt away. Now standard on the front and rear outboard positions, the Zero-Gravity seats have been engineered to eliminate the stress points; more on this later. Malcolm and I were impressed with the fine-touch materials used throughout the vehicle. Another first, Nissan is making navigation standard on all Murano models – thanks, Nissan! The center console houses an 8” touch screen display through which you can control/adjust almost all vehicle, climate, telephone, and infotainment settings. You’d expect this type of luxury in the Infiniti brand and that’s exactly what Nissan reiterates: get a luxurious, elegant Infiniti interior in this Murano. The Drive: There was a slight drizzle when Malcolm and I pulled out of the Rosewood Hotel Georgia and headed through downtown. Within a short time, we were on our way to Whistler. The luxury qualities of the new Murano become evident in its quiet interior and drive. The Murano utilizes an acoustic laminated windshield, acoustic absorbing roof trim, and plenty of sound-deadening technology in the hood, instrument panel, and floor areas to ensure easy front-to-rear passenger conversations. Travelling at 100 km/h, Malcolm and I discussed our childhoods without being distracted by exterior and engine noise. The drive along the scenic Sea-to-Sky highway becomes just that much better when you’re inside a quiet vehicle. We stopped at Squamish, and while sipping our lattes, wondered whether Whistler would have some snow, as Squamish was unseasonably bare. Being a ski fanatic, I was anxious to check snow conditions so that a ski trip could be planned for the near future. After coffee, we switched seats and I piloted the Murano. As some of you probably know, I’m not a CVT fan and prefer the gear system. That being said, the Murano’s CVT system has to be one of the best; the transmission effortlessly glides through the appropriate drive ratios to ensure ultra-smooth acceleration and power delivery. The driver can manually shift via the console-mounted shifter, but I would have preferred paddle shifters instead. Power comes from the trusted 3.5-liter DOHC V-6, that puts out 260 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. Handling of the Murano was good, and although it sacrifices some sportiness, passengers will enjoy the extra comfort. The electrohydraulic rack-and-pinion steering allowed us to feel pretty connected to the road, what you’d expect for this crossover. We arrived in Whistler and headed out the “Need for Speed” event. Before ending, I wanted to give kudos to Nissan for the Zero-Gravity seats – they are amazing! Built to eliminate fatigue by providing support from the pelvis to the chest areas, these are the seats you want to have when going on any long drive; I just wish they had built-in massagers. Final Thoughts: Nissan is targeting the new Murano at the empty-nesters or a young couple or family. This stylish new crossover is sure to appeal to an audience who wants pizazz, refinement, and reliability. While we only had two days with the new Murano, we also got to have some fun with the new Pathfinder and Juke. Nissan promised us extended test drives in the very near future, and you’ll find those reviews in the upcoming issues. For now, we were thoroughly impressed by the new Murano. In case you’re wondering what Nissan’s “Need for Speed” activity was all about, well, it was a blast for sure. Nissan Canada had booked media guests to go down the Olympic bobsled run. Our team hit a top-speed of about 145 km/h. What a rush! March / April 2015

It’s a CONSTRUCTION ZONE for heaven’s sake! r`b dw vwsqw ! iDAwn nwL, ies Kyqr ‘c auswrI c`l rhI hY

F

or the past couple of months, I’ve been driving through so many construction zones that it seems like we’re in an economic boom. Whether in downtown Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Burnaby, or the Tri-Cities, there’s construction everywhere. Don’t get the idea that I’m opposed to construction; far from it, actually. But in construction zones is where I’ve seen the worst of driving behaviours. Recently, while I was going to get groceries in the Tri-Cities, traffic was moving along at a decent speed, and most people were obeying the flag-people, as they should. I was minding my own business and travelling in my own lane when, out of nowhere, a big SUV came barging right in front of me, trying to avoid waiting in line. I had to slam on my brakes and give my head a shake. What was the driver thinking? Did he/ she not see the “Child in Car” sticker on my rear window? While I was about to honk my horn, I decided against it after seeing the faces of my two daughters in the rear view mirror. It wasn’t worth it. My brain tried to make me believe it could have been an honest mistake, but my gut told me differently. 16

DRK News / Views / Stuff I wish I could say that, on the whole, every automobile I observe in a construction zone is mindful of the signs and posted speed limits, but I can’t. Last month, the portable sign that announces the speed to you as a warning of the speed at which you’re entering a construction zone, had clocked a car travelling at 109 km/h, where the speed limit was 60 km/h. That’s almost double! I swear the flag person had to jump out of the way to avoid any potential catastrophe and I’m sure she was shaking like a leaf after that incident. With sky high fines and demerit points for not obeying speed limits in construction zones, it always makes me wonder who can afford to blow through these areas. Can the average person just throw away $500 - $1000 over a matter of just a few minutes? Well, if fines don’t slow you down, think of this. Are your precious few minutes worth the risk? Could you live with yourself knowing that, because of you, someone’s child, parent, or spouse didn’t come home? What if it was your family member who didn’t make it home? Just think about it. Slow down. It’s not worth it.

NOT ALWAYS TAX FREE (TFSA’s)

sdw hI tYks mukq nhIN (tI AYP AYs ey)

W

ith the Canadian tax season in full swing and many individuals rushing to make contributions to their RRSP’s and TaxFree Savings Accounts (TFSA’s), a moment to consider the nature of your investment activity is always important. In recent correspondence with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) it is becoming apparent that the CRA is focusing on high value TFSA’s and conducting audits on these accounts as large amounts of monies are being withdrawn tax free. While it is not clear the dollar threshold that will spark the CRA’s interest, it would be safe to assume that accounts in the six digits and upwards will be subject to scrutiny. The reasoning for this recent development is the use of TFSA’s by individuals for day-trading activities which are resulting in large capital gains that are then being withdrawn tax free. The implication is CRA’s position that the activity of day-trading is a business and as such any income earned in a TFSA should be taxable. While not everyone is a day-trader the concern to the average investor is that you could happen to own a very well-performing portfolio that has netted you some decent returns and is now placing you under the attention of the CRA radar. As there is no specific wording in the Income Tax Act regarding when your investment income becomes business income the tax courts of Canada have established guidelines that the CRA must consider when looking to classify investment and trading activity as a business. These are: • The intent upon which the investments were purchased (intention to buy and hold to earn income, or to trade for a profit); • The number of transactions in the account; • The length of time the investments were held; • The overall nature of the investments; • The time spent by the individual investor with their investments (hobby or full-time);

In Your Corner • The extent monies were borrowed; and • The individual’s expertise or knowledge in the investments and trading activity. While no one factor will be sufficient evidence or proof that investing or trading activity is in the nature of business, the courts and the CRA will look at the whole picture in making a final determination with intent being the key position. When it is not clear as to the intent, as in recent cases (specifically Ontario Limited and Empire Paving Limited), the Tax Courts have decided to rule in favor of the taxpayer, as there are traits that could suggest either treatment. However, a word of caution. While there has been favorable treatment where evidence is not clear as to the intent of the investment activity, individual taxpayers should not flirt with danger as rulings can quite easily swing the other way with punitive results. Consult with your Chartered Accountant to ensure that your holdings are being reported correctly so as to avoid any nasty surprises.

RK is proud to sponsor LOP FC, a newly established soccer club in Surrey BC. The team was formed in the summer of 2014, with founders Inder Nijjar, Jack Gill, and Bhavik Chauhan. Not only was the founders’ vision to create a great soccer team, but also to bring the community together through the sport. LOP FC is managed and coached by Bhavik Chauhan. The LOP FC team had to start from the bottom of the soccer league and work hard to become one of the top teams. Currently, they are playing in the Fraser Valley Soccer League Division 4C. Bhavik Chauhan, who hails from London UK, is an established coach of the game, with 18 years of experience in coaching and 33 years of involvement in the game. Chauhan has led the team to the top of table so far, with only a few games left. LOP FC is slated to play in the semi-final of the Bradner Cup, giving us a successful season to date. The players for LOP FC range from the youngest being 18 years old to the oldest veteran player being 50 years old. The mixed range of players has created a special bond that has led to the success of the team. Fans have travelled with the team to show their support and the team is appreciative of the fans’ time and constant cheers. The team is led by joint-captains Prab Dhillon and Mandip Parhar. Prab leads the back line while Mandip commands the front pack. Strong performances by all players have resulted in 49 goals being scored by the LOP FC team, while conceding to only 16. fI Awr ky ies g`l ‘qy mwx mihsUs kr irhw hY ik aus v`loN srHI dy nvyN bxy sOkr kl`b nUM spWsr kIqw hY[ ieh tIm ijs dy sMsQwpk ieMdr in`Jr, jYk ig`l Aqy Bwivk cOhwn hn 2014 dIAW grmIAW ‘c bxweI geI [ ies dy bxwaux vwilAW dw kyvl iehI mMqv nhIN hY ik vDIAw sOkr tIm bxweI jwvy sgoN ieh vI hY ik Kyf rwhIN kimauntI ‘c eykqw bxweI jwvy[Bwivk cOhwn AYl E pI AYP sI tIm nUM koc krdw hY[ ies tIm nUM sOkr lIg ‘c iblkul hyTW qoN SurU krnw ipAw Aqy vDIAw tImW ‘c Swml hox leI sKq imhnq vI krnI peI[ A`j k`lH ieh tIm Pryzr vYLI sOkr lIg fvIzn 4 sI Kyf rhI hY[ lMfn, XU. ky nwL sbMDq Bwivk cOhwn ie`k nwmI koc hY ijs dw koicMg dw 18 swl dw qjrbw hY Aqy auh ies Kyf nwL 33 swl qoN juiVAw hoieAw hY[kyvl ku`J hI mYc hoxy bwkI hn jdoN ik cOhwn dI AgvweI ny ies tIm nUM hux q`k bulMdIAW ‘qy phuMcwieAw hY[ AYl E pI AYP sI brYfnr k`p dy sYmI PweInl ‘c Kyf ky hux q`k dy sIzn dI kwmXwbI vwlw sIzn dy rhI hY[ ij`QoN q`k AYl E pI AYP sI tIm dy iKfwrIAW dw sbMD hY ies ‘c 18 swl dI aumr qoN lY ky 50 swl q`k dy vYtrn iKfwrI Swml hn[ hr aumr dy iKfwrIAW dy Swml hox nwL tIm ‘c ie`k Kws irSqw bx igAw hY jo tIm dI kwmXwbI dw ie`k kwrn bixAw hY[ ies tIm dy pRsMsk ij`Qy ieh tIm jWdI hY au`Qy phUMc ky tIm nUM h`lwSyrI idMdy hn[ ies sB leI tIm Awpxy pRsMskW v`loN id`qy jWdy smyN Aqy h`lwSyrI dyx leI srwhnw vI krdI hY[ ies tIm dy do kpqwn hn pRB iF`loN Aqy mndIp prhwr[ pRB tIm dI fIPYNs lweIn dI AgvweI krdw hY jdoN ik mndIp Agly ih`sy dI[ ieh tIm dI vDIAw Kyf dw hI is`tw hY ik tIm ny 49 gol kIqy Aqy kyvl 16 goL hI KwDy[

2015 Dodge Grand Caravan

T

he Dodge Caravan was a pioneering example of the minivan configuration when it was first launched in 1983 for the 1984 model year. Now in its fifth generation, it’s still the best-selling minivan of all time. For the 2015 model year, the Grand Caravan still retains the best features that buyers want: Stow ‘N Go Seating, the great Pentastar V6, and a low starting price. While it may not be as refined and luxurious as its competitors, its boxy configuration, simplistic design, and utilitarian demeanour make it an attractive choice for those who need to haul a lot of cargo or passengers. Combine that with a great safety rating, and this vehicle makes a perfect family hauler. As Chrysler says in their own commercial, the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan, “has everything so you can do anything.” Starts at $21, 395.

2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser

T

oyota had taken a gamble when it introduced the FJ Cruiser, a retro-looking off-road intended vehicle. Resembling the FJ40 that was built in the 1960’s, the FJ Cruiser had good sales numbers. For FJ Cruiser lovers, alas, 2014 was the last year for this vehicle. Powered by a 4.0L V6, the FJ Cruiser produced 260 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. While these are not bad numbers, the body shape and structure of the vehicle didn’t really do justice to the motor. But let’s remember that this vehicle was built for off-road purpose, and not for using it as a daily urban commuter (even though there was Urban Package model). Overall, it was a good-looking vehicle as exterior styling was the opposite of what most manufacturers were heading towards. If you’re a fan of the FJ Cruiser, now might be the best time to get a great deal on this vehicle. Starts at $33,540.

2015 Victory Vegas 8-Ball

I

f you are looking for a stylish, modern and cost-efficient cruiser, then you should take a closer look at the 2015 Victory Vegas 8-Ball as it might be just what you needed. The black-out paint and trim scheme is perfect for those who want and edgy look. We really liked it. There are a wide range of available accessories to customize the bike to your personal tastes. The comfy seat and riding position allow you to use this bike on a daily basis. The motorcycle is built around a 1731 cc, 4-stroke 50° V-twin engine which generates a maximum torque of 110 lb-ft. The engine’s power is kept in leash by a six speed overdrive transmission which features helical-cut gears for smooth and sure shifts. The stopping power is handled by front single 300mm floating discs with a 4 piston caliper and rear 300 mm floating discs grabbed by a 2-piston caliper. Starts at $14, 399. 26

2015 KTM Freeride 250R

W

ith the spring/summer-like weather we’re having, some of you may have already pulled out and cleaned up your off-road bikes. For the versatile off-roader, the 2015 KTM Freeride 250R fills a nice sweet spot between a full-size enduro and a trials bike. One of the unique features of the Freeride is its chassis, which uses perimeter frame made of chrome-moly steel and aluminum. Match this to high quality parts and superb build-quality, and you’ve got a bike that will satisfy all your off-road expectations. The two-stroke engine might be a little rough when cold, but will provide great torque and power for any obstacles. The six-speed transmission has enough bandwidth for newbies and expert riders alike. Some have claimed that the KTM Freeride might be the perfect choice while camping or teaching someone how to ride. Get one fast because they’re selling out like crazy. Starts at $8, 999

Gone are the days of your parents’ Volvos, which were great cars of course, but never performance oriented vehicles that could compete with the likes of the M3 or the AMG. Fast forward to 2015 and be prepared to be blown away by the new Volvo S60 Polestar. When I told my cousin that I was going to be test driving the new Polestar, his text message to me simply read, “That car rips.” Enough said.

2015 Volvo S60 Polestar

sition

The first thing that strikes you when you see the S60 Polestar is the phenomenal Rebel Blue paint, and there are only certain cars that can pull off such a colour; most people loved it. Volvo styling is subtle, yet apparent in the front grille, rear bumper, and rear tail lights, but that’s about it. The rear could use some tweaking, but overall, the Polestar is gorgeous, and distinct from the S60. On the Trans-Canada highway, while heading towards Vancouver, I passed a regular S60 and the driver did a double take on the Polestar, probably wishing he had made the upgrade. On the inside, front and rear seats are exceptional and provide utmost comfort and support. Polestar Performance badging is evident throughout, but perhaps the best look is when the shifter lights up – great touch, Volvo. But forget looks, let’s talk performance. Firing up the Polestar releases a tame snarl from the 3.5” tail pipes. The T6 3.0L engine produces 345 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, and this tuned engine is matched perfectly to the Aisin Warner 6-speed transmission that sends power to all four wheels. In regular Drive Mode, the car drives great and gives the same fuel economy as the S60. The suspension is not too edgy, making it easy to drive this Volvo every day and all day – did I mention I love the seats. Need to get somewhere fast? Throw the shifter to the left to Sport Mode and the Polestar morphs from gentle Bruce Banner to the Hulk. The car downshifts a gear or two, ready to pounce. An exhaust valve opens, turning the subtle snarl into a full-out growl; the men in blue will turn to look, so keep it slow. The 345 hp is deceiving as the car feels, and goes, much faster. Volvo states that 0 – 60 mph takes only 4.5 seconds, which feels bang on. Shifting is amazingly crisp, whether done manually via the paddles or automatically by the car. Since it was February, our test Polestar was equipped with snow tires and they performed surprisingly well; summer slicks, however, would allow drivers to eat up corners and turns with relative ease. Steering is precise and effortless, with only minor Jag Dhatt road imperfections not making it to your fingertips. Because of jag@jgkmedia.ca our mild winter, we didn’t have the chance to drive the car in snow, but like any other Volvo, we’re positive it would not disappoint. For 2015, there will be a total of 750 Volvo Polestars available in only 13 countries, including a handful for Canada. Can this car compete with the AMG or M3? Well, maybe, or maybe not. But considering the sticker price is ten grand less, at the least, this might be the perfect car to rip around the track or take to Ikea for some home furnishings. March / April 2015

hen the parking lot outside of a business is full, it’s a sure sign that the business is not only thriving, but also that its clients are happy and satisfied. On any given day, venture to the corner of 76th Avenue and Anvil Way (between 129th and 130th street) in Surrey, and good luck trying to find a parking spot at Overseas Auto Body and Glass. This is a busy shop and personally speaking, we have used Overseas’ services a number of times and have never been disappointed. “My dad, Gurparkash (Gary) Singh Sekhon came to Canada in the mid 1970’s and worked in a variety of jobs, from mining to automotive repair,” says Simran Sekhon, the General Manager and leader of the Surrey location. “In the mid 1980’s, my dad received his bodyman certification and began to work for Goldkey GM. Later, in March 1989, he bought his first body shop in Surrey, located at 135th Street and 77th Avenue.” Overseas continued to grow after 1989 and very soon, there was not enough space for customer vehicles. Gary Sekhon knew he needed to expand and finally, in 2003, Overseas Autobody and Glass opened its new facility, at its current 9000 square foot location. 32

It seems like the love of cars, hard work, and customer service runs in the Sekhon blood. Even while he attended elementary school and high school, Simran would spend as much time as he could at the body shop, learning the trade and the business. “Rather than going out with friends, I spent my time with my dad at the body shop, helping out as much as I could. Sometimes, I would spend hours just cleaning up after the shop closed for the day,” reminisces the younger Sekhon. In 2006, a couple of years after completing high school, Simran began to work full-time as Manager at Overseas Auto Body. In fact, he learned the business so well and quickly that, in 2008, the patriarch, Gary, backed off and handed the reins to Simran. Gary would come by once in a while, but he knew his business was in good hands. Business began to boom at Overseas Autobody & Glass and Simran had no intention of slowing down. Overseas even began having clients who were not from the Surrey or Delta areas. “People were so happy with our service that they began to refer their friends and family to us,” says Simran. Like his father, expansion was on the younger Sekhon’s mind and thus, in 2010, Overseas Autobody & Glass opened its second location in Abbotsford, BC, where Jessie Mehmi was appointed to oversee operations. Says Simran, “Jessie is an honest and meticulous person and he was the perfect person for our Abbotsford location.” As I wrote before, we’ve been loyal clients of Overseas Autobody and Glass – yes, there are many bodyshops in our area, but we are treated like family at Overseas. The staff at Overseas takes the time to talk to us and explain all the details of our claim and more importantly, they listen to our concerns. “You have my personal guarantee and word that, as our customer, your satisfaction is my number one priority,” says Simran. He continues, “I know people will judge me within the first 5 minutes of meeting me, and it’s my duty to ensure that they know I’m committed to making them happy. We don’t take shortcuts at our shop – all work is guaranteed for the life of your car.” Impressive words, considering that the younger Sekhon is only in his mid-20’s and just recently married. However, on any given day, he is the first one at the shop and the last one to leave – that’s commitment. “I will promise and give you the moon and sun when you are a client of Overseas Autobody and Glass,” says Simran Sekhon and take it from us, he’s not kidding.

here are certain things that forever get etched into an auto enthusiast’s mind: Getting “the” license, your first drive, owning your first car, popping your first wheelie, or getting your first speeding ticket. Personally, these are all vivid memories, as is the first time I saw Buick’s masterpiece. The year was 1987, in the small town of Merritt, BC. There we were, after school, a group of friends sipping on Big Gulps at the only 7-11 in town. We were all car nerds, often thinking about what supercar we would buy when we became rich and famous; would we buy a Lamborghini Countach or the Ferrari Testarossa that Don Johnson drove in Miami Vice? Maybe it would be the Porsche with the whale tail or maybe just a new Vette. Aahh, high schoolers and their dreams. And then we saw it. A gorgeous black silhouette approaching the intersection, waiting to make a left turn, right in front of us. We were awestruck at this beauty of a car, with its black paint just glistening in the summer sun. We had seen pictures of the car in magazines, but never in real life and this close. I mean, come on, we lived in Merritt. And honestly, magazine pictures didn’t do this car any justice – the 1987 Buick Grand National GNX, in our town. Wow. If you grew up in the 80’s, you knew about Grand Nationals. They owned the drag strips in North America and were the only 34

DRK Classic Car cars to outright stomp on the Corvette, “The coveted American Sports Car”. The Grand Nationals were bad, with their all-black paint, black trim, black bumpers, black grille…you get the picture. The interior was mostly in grey tones, with only emblems in red on the special fabric Lear seats. The dash and instrumentation were clearly 80’s, simple and functional. There was no CD player, air bags, or even a lot of gauges; Buick did, however, include a tach and boost gauge. If you didn’t know about this car, it would come across as a regular 2-door family car, the perfect disguise for a wolf in sheep’s clothing. But when it came to performance, there was nothing “family” about this car. Whereas other 80’s muscle cars were equipped with V8’s, Buick decided to power the Grand National with a turbocharged 3.8 liter overhead cam V6. That’s right, a V6! The GNX model, made only in 1987, made a generous 276 hp, but a very substantial 360 lb-ft of torque. That was enough to move this car from 0 – 60 in just 4.5 seconds, numbers which are incredible for an 80’s production vehicle. No wonder drivers of the GNX saw most everyone in their rear-view mirrors. Buick’s Dark Knight only lived for five years, from 1982 – 1987 (they never made one in 1983) and was the undisputed working man’s supercar. It had presence, muscle, and poise. Since the first day I saw the Grand National in 1987, I’ve always wanted to own one. Today, they are rare, and expensive, and any that come on the market get picked up fast. But, if news reports are correct, we may see the ‘Rise of the Dark Knight’ in 2016, when the Grand National makes its comeback

Glimpses of India

In the last issue of DRK, we had included some pictures of “Indian Roads,” and had promised readers “Glimpses of India” for this issue. India, which has a population of over 1 billion people, is a country rich in cultures, religions, and languages. Even within a thirty minute drive, you can experience ultra-modern shopping malls and cinemas, yet still transcend time to villages that retain the “old” lifestyle. I was fortunate enough to visit India after long fifteen long years, for two family weddings. My girls loved the visit and are looking forward to another one soon.

Dodge

RAM 1500 EcoDiesel T

he pick-up/light truck category has shown some tremendous growth in the last ten years. More than ever, trucks are becoming hybrid-functional vehicles – use for work during the day and a night out during the evening. With Ford coming out with an all-aluminum body for the F150, Dodge had to be innovative so that it didn’t get left behind. Thus, last year, the Ram 1500 became the first light-duty truck to be fitted with a diesel powerplant, and most of us loved this option. Now add the class-exclusive Active-Level Four Corner Air Suspension, MultiLink coil spring rear suspension, and In-floor Storage system, and you’ve got a great truck. For 2015, the Ram remains mostly unchanged from the 2014 model, with the exception of some minor cosmetic upgrades. It’s a great looking truck, and in my humble opinion, neck-andneck with the F150 as the best looking truck on the market. My cousin, who owns a GMC Sierra, took offence to my top choices and I explained that the Ram and F150 have a more aggressive look, and thus, my personal favourites; my reasoning still didn’t satisfy him, though. Even though the Ram 1500 is the baby of the Ram-series, make no mistake, it’s still a big truck, and based on your cab and box configuration, it can become a behemoth pretty quickly. Some of the things I really like include the front grille, projector headlamps and the RamBox Management System, which makes storage in the streamlined box area quite simple. On the inside, depending on your trim of choice, the cabin can be mistaken for that of a large luxury sedan. Supple leather seats, leather steering wheel and trim, and all the bells and whistles you can hope for with respect to technology, convenience, and safety. I’ve said it before; nowadays, almost every vehicle can configured with all the features that were only available in luxury cars, and these options are now available in trucks. Yes, trucks are no longer just your in38

dustrial workhorses and the Ram 1500’s interior is a great balance of workspace and luxury. Where the Ram 1500 really shines is under the hood, where the fitted EcoDiesel Jag Dhatt powerplant is the same one found in the jag@jgkmedia.ca Jeep Grand Cherokee. Fire up this baby and you’ll feel a slight rumbling in the floor boards, thanks to the 3.0-liter turbo diesel motor. While power is only a mild 240 horses, the EcoDiesel puts out an impressive 420 lb-ft of torque, all while delivering surprisingly great fuel economy. Dodge states that regardless of powerplant, the Ram series have the best highway fuel economy in its class. Stomp on the gas pedal and the 7,000 pound truck really moves; the only real hiccup is the minor turbo lag, but it’s only at low rpms. At cruising speeds, I found passing to be a breeze. The Ram 1500’s ride is quite comfortable, thanks to the classexclusive air suspension. Matched with the 20” tire and wheel package on our Laramie test vehicle, at times, we forgot we were riding in a truck. There’s minimal body roll under regular driving conditions and the suspension soaks up all road imperfections. Steering, for a truck of this size is also quite good. I could see myself taking my family in this vehicle on long road trips. In fact, one of my friends, who just got back from California in his 2014 EcoDiesel Laramie, said he loved the ride and comfort of the truck. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is not the most budget-friendly truck when it comes to initial investment. Sure, the diesel option will set you back an extra $4,500 compared to the base V6, but make the upgrade. With its high torque, great looks, tonnes of interior space, and impressive cab and cabin options, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is definitely worth it.

Just Ask Leah

Just Ask Leah lIAw nUM p`uCo Leah Gillanders Automotive Technician at Brian Jessel BMW

Q1: In your opinion, what are the top 3 performance upgrades I can do to my BMW? A1: My first choice would be the BMW M carbon ceramic brake system. It is one of the best braking systems, period. They are extremely lightweight and agile, and the brake system is made from innovative carbon fiber and ceramic performance materials. My second would be the BMW M Performance exhaust system, which provides an impressive sporty sound, both inside and outside of the vehicle. This exhaust gives very nice mid tones that do not drown out. My last choice would be the BMW M performance aerodynamics kit. Not only do they give your vehicle a lowered look and style, but will improve the efficiency of air flow, enhancing power and fuel economy. Q2: What the benefits or front-wheel drive cars as compared to rear-wheel drive cars? For our area, do you have a preference? A2: Briefly discussing FWD vs RWD is difficult. There are many different designs, and motor layout, that effect the drive-ability along with the drive line. In the short, most FWD vehicles have front mounted engines that create extra weight to the driving wheels. This helps assist in traction during slippery conditions. You will find RWD vehicles more-so associated with sports cars, since the weight is distributed more evenly throughout the drive line, allowing them to generally handle more torque. This although is not always ideal in slippery situations as the wheels will spin out easier. Q3: I noticed that recently, there is a moldy smell when we first start and drive the car for a while. It does go away after a bit, but it’s strong when we start the car and the automatic climate control kicks in. A3: This smell could be due to a few different factors. One possibility is that there may be moisture retained in your cabin, either from a previous or current water leak. This moisture can cause a moldy smell. When your climate control is activated, fresh air is circulated through the cabin drying the moisture or masking the smell. Another scenario, if the smell is more prominent when the vents are on, could be mold build-up 40

Just Ask Leah around the AC system. Water condenses around the coils on the evaporator and the moisture on the evaporator makes it easy for harmful air particles, dust, dirt, pollen, spores and germs to manifest. These air particles form harmful and smelly substances such as bacteria, mites, and fungus. A third cause could be a plugged cabin air filter (ifso equipped). Q4: During a recent oil change, my husband said I should get regular motor oil, but the adviser suggested getting full synthetic, but it’s a lot more expensive. A4: Synthetic oils are fantastic products. These blended oils flow more freely at extreme low temperatures and don’t break down at high temperatures. In addition, synthetics will produce has less friction in the motor, allowing for potentially better fuel economy and longer times between oil changes. Although I am partial to synthetic oils, they will pay off in the long run. If you’re not going into extreme weather conditions and don’t have an engine that already requires them, then it isn’t necessary to upgrade your engine oil to a full Synthetic.

STAY CONNECTED in Your Vehicle

I

n an effort to make communicating and calling safer and easier, most of today’s vehicles feature a variety of ways to connect your phone to the car. One such example is Ford Sync, which allows you to pair your phone via Bluetooth to the car. After doing so, you have the ability to make calls, receive text messages and many more features Jitin Dhillon using the built-in car systems, often being completely hands free. Car manufacturers offer a plethora of different options in regards to smartphone pairing: the simplest is being able to use your car speakers and a built in mic for hands free operation, while more robust options use more features of your phone such as voice commands, hands free texting, email, GPS and more. In an effort to expand connectivity, many manufacturers now offer the ability to create personal hotspots for devices being used inside or outside of the vehicle. OnStar is one such example of equipping compatible vehicles with 4G LTE capability, which makes accessing the web as easy as connecting to your home WiFi. This holds advantages over conventional smartphone hotspots with a much stronger signal strength when on the road and eliminating the need for a device to act as a hub (which drains battery and doesn’t perform as well). Ultra-luxury vehicles, such as the Bentley and Rolls Royce also feature such connectivity for onthe-go professionals.

Taking it even a step further, products such as Drone Mobile, are changing the way we stay connected with our car. DroneMobile allows you to connect your smartphone with your vehicles security and/or remote start system. Now you can remotely lock your car right from your smartphone, eliminating the need to go back outside or walk to the parking lot to lock the vehicle. Additionally, you can also remotely start the vehicle if it’s equipped with a remote starter with the added benefit of practically unlimited range over conventional remotes. DroneMobile even alerts users if the car alarm is triggered, and offers a variety of other features such as geofencing and maintenance reminders. The added connectivity options in modern vehicles increasingly add convenience and safety to our daily commutes and makes choosing the right features all the more important. Vehicles have begun to race into the digital world, and the smartphone is going to be at the center of it all.
