This is the MAGAZINE ad of the year. True, this ad for the Volvo XC90 doesn’t have any beauty shots of the Pacific Coast Highway. Or any thrilling images from the Salt Flats in Utah. And no, there’s not a single sentence describing how exhilarating it feels to get behind the wheel. So why is this the print ad of the year? Well, because it’s for the new Volvo XC90. 2016 North American Truck/Utility of the Year.

Motorcycle crashes decline

T

he South Okanagan saw a significant decline in motorcycle crashes in 2015, after two years of high numbers. Last year, there was one fatal motorcycle crash and 28 injuries. The year previous, four people were killed and 39 injured. RCMP noticed a trend of increasing motorcycle crashes in early 2015 and reached out to motorcycle shops in the region to put together an educational

program to curb such incidents. Reserve Const. Dave Cramm, a motorcycle instructor, conducted roadside safety talks with hundreds of motorcyclists through the summer, and a motorcycle skills demonstration was held in Penticton last spring. Sgt. Harold Hallett, with South Okanagan Traffic Services, says police have received positive feedback for their efforts from motorcyclists in the area. Between 2014 and 2015, fatalities in

motorcycle crashes were reduced by 75 per cent, and overall crashes were reduced by 33 per cent. As riding season begins in the next few months, police plan to continue encouraging motorcycle safety.

Chevrolet lowering price of Spark, making it Canada’s cheapest new car

B

uyers in Quebec purchase a disproportionate share of micro cars in Canada, so no surprise that Chevrolet chose the weekend’s Montreal auto show to announce the re-designed 2016 Spark will be sold for less than $10,000. Chevrolet becomes the third company in these past two model years to offer a vehicle for under $10,000 in Canada. The Spark LS hatchback with manual transmission is priced at $9,995 plus freight, or $3 less than Nissan’s Micra and Mitsubishi’s 2015 Mirage. Standard features on the Spark include a new 1.4-litre, 98-horsepower Ecotec engine, 10 airbags, back-up camera, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with access to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, OnStar with a Wi-Fi hotspot. Optional safety features include side blind spot warning and

forward collision alert. Still in showrooms, the 2015 Micra S price with purchase financing is $9,998. It’s got a slightly stronger 1.6-litre, 109-horsepower four-cylinder -- but fewer frills. There’s no touchscreen, fewer airbags and air conditioning is optional. The 2015 Mirage starts at $12,498 minus $2,500 in incentives. It’s fitted with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder generating 74 horsepower. The 2017 Mirage (Mitsubishi skipped 2016), available in March, gets an interior and exterior re-design, and becomes the first model from the company to offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The engine’s horsepower is bumped gently to 78, and brakes are improved. Safety equipment includes a seven air-bag system, brake and hill-start assist, stability control. Price unavailable.

GM LAUNCHES NEW MAVEN APP

G

eneral Motors is off to a prolific year in terms of connected-car and ridesharing services. After announcing a partnership with Lyft and buying Sidecar, the automaker is now launching Maven, a new car-sharing app giving customers access to highly personalized, on-demand mobility services. The global Maven team includes more than 40 employees from the connected car technology industry as well as ride- and carsharing professionals from Google, Zipcar, and Sidecar. How does Maven work? Customers use the app to search for and reserve a vehicle by location or car type and unlock the vehicle with their smartphone. The app also enables remote functions such as starting, heating or cooling, and more. Right now, Maven is only available to 100,000 people in Ann Arbor, initially focusing on serving faculty and students at the University of Michigan. Other U.S. cities will follow later in 2016 including Chicago and New York. Various programs are running on GM campuses in the U.S., Germany, and China to refine and test future Maven commercial offerings.

Ford to Launch Mustang in India in the Summer

I

ndians will be able to drive Ford Motor Co.’s iconic Mustang sports car along the country’s roads this summer, more than five decades after it was launched in the U.S. The U.S. auto maker is launching the car in India as it hopes to gain from growing demand for luxury cars from wealthy individuals in the south Asian nation. The Mustang has notched sales of more than nine million units globally since its launch, said Nigel Harris, the managing director and president of Ford in India. “This is the first time the car has been fully engineered in right-hand (driving) capability,” said Mr. Harris at an event in New Delhi to unveil the Mustang. He said Indian customers will be able to purchase the Mustang from the quarter starting April 1. He didn’t disclose the likely price of the car. Fully-built cars and

sport-utility vehicles attract an import tax of more than 100% in India. Although the Mustang’s U.S. rival, the Chevrolet Camaro isn’t yet sold in India by General Motors Co., the Ford car is expected to compete for attention with buyers of luxury car brands such as Porsche AG, MercedesBenz, Audi AG, BMW AG and Jaguar. The Mustang will be available in India only with one engine option: a 5.0-liter model delivering more than 420 horsepower. It will allow the driver to choose between various driving and interior lighting modes, said Prakash Patel, Ford’s Global Program Manager for the Mustang. The launch of the Mustang is a big leap for Ford in India which sells currently the Figo hatchback, Figo Aspire and Fiesta sedans, EcoSport compact SUV and the Endeavour SUV.

W

hen a company like Land Rover builds a new SUV that has legendary off-road capability and then matches it with an aggressive price that will make buyers of Honda or Toyota take notice, you’ve got people’s attention. The 2016 Discovery Sport replaces the outgoing LR2 and in my humble opinion, thank God! Land Rover’s newest SUV is a much better representation of the company’s styling, engineering, and status that the LR2 didn’t have. Not too long ago, I was handed the keys to the Discovery Sport and after just one week, my wife and I were thoroughly impressed. 10

It’s Disco Time

L

et’s start with the most obvious – pricing. We all know that Jaguar Land Rover didn’t have the most budget friendly pricing, until now. The 2016 Discovery Sport starts at just $41,790, while the HSE Luxury is priced at $50,290. If we’re making comparisons, these are numbers just slightly above a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. In the same breath, the Disco Sport is on par with the Europeans, namely the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Volvo XC60. In fact, a neighbour of mine talked to me about his next potential purchase, which was going to be a CR-V, and I told him about the Discovery Sport. After a visit to the JLR dealer and test drive, he forgoes the Honda and buys the Disco Sport HSE Luxury, complete with the Black 12

Design Package. Who would have thought? When looking at any piece of art or décor, it’s always subjective. My wife and I really liked the look of the Disco Sport, but there is a disclaimer. Unless you’re on a really tight budget, get the HSE Luxury with the Black Design Package because it makes all the difference in the world. Sure, the base SE looks good, but it’s like looking at a piece of art on canvas, without the elegant finished frame. Our test vehicle was finished in beautiful Firenze Red, complete with contrast Santorini Black roof and 20” Five Split-Spoke Gloss Black wheels. Big bold “Discovery” badging, on front and back, was also in black. This latest Land Rover feels right at home, whether going off-road, through mud, or to a corporate business meeting.

2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport

In addition to the aggressive pricing of the new Disco Sport, another big surprise is the interior, with respect to materials, styling, and space. Being a Land Rover, you’d expect the interior to be wellfurnished and for the most part it is. The cabin is well designed and with the HSE Luxury package, you pretty much have all the bells and whistles: panoramic sunroof, climate front and heated rear seats, 3-zone climate control, and of course, a multitude of safety systems. Land Rover could have done a better job in choosing better hard plastic materials on the door panels and upper dash, as they don’t match up to, let’s say, the Audi or BMW. Also, if we’re getting picky, the 5” colour TFT driver information centre is a little small – some design elements could have been changed to have it a tad larger. However, the 8” infotainment screen is bright and nicely placed. Now, if you can look beyond these minor quirks, be amazed by the cavernous interior. The interior of the Discovery Sport is surprisingly spacious, for both people moving and cargo space – you’d never imagine if you just looked at the outside. In Canada, 5-seating is standard, but for $1900 more, the “5 + 2” is available, and highly recommended, in case you ever needed them. Front and second row seats are quite comfortable, and fully adjustable. I’m 5’11” and I had no trouble at all sitting in either row. Just for testing, my friend who is 6’4”, found the front two rows to be quite comfortable, with plenty of shoulder and headroom. The back row should be reserved for smaller people or young kids – period. Another point to add here is that if you’re occupying all 7 seats, you can forget the cargo space, save for some minor bags. However, with the third row folded, there’s enough space (981 liters, in fact) in the cargo area to haul

quite a bit. Even though the Disco Sport replaces the LR2, it will most likely be compared with the Range Rover Evoque. Power for this SUV comes from the same 2.0L, turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine found in the Evoque. With 240 hp, there’s plenty of power for most all urban and suburban conditions; however, it doesn’t have the oomph that you feel in the Evoque. The 9-speed ZF transmission is excellent though, as is the Disco’s all wheel drive system, and we’d expect nothing less. And how can we not mention the Terrain Response system, which has settings for sand, snow, rock, and mud. This system automatically adjusts the drive system, throttle response, and traction control to ensure the best traction and performance on any surface. Both my wife and I found the Disco Sport quite comfortable to drive, and more importantly, she felt reassured knowing that she’s driving a vehicle that will keep our family safe. Our three daughters were comfortable in the 2nd rows seats and didn’t feel the need to keep pushing each other. Not that we ever will need it, but knowing that the Disco Sport can also wade through almost two feet of water is kind of cool. Around town, parking the SUV was easy, especially with the surround-view camera. For a family like ours, honestly, I couldn’t find too much to fault with the Disco. We really liked it. When I first spoke to Ryan Muir, JLR’s Western Market Manager, last year, he had told me that the new Discovery Sport would bridge the gap between the Evoque and the LR4. “I think the Discovery Sport will be a hot seller,” he had said. Initially I had my doubts, but after spending a week with the Disco Sport, I think he nailed it. This could become Land Rover’s best selling model in Canada. MARCH / APRIL 2016

he Datsun 240z reminds us of an ultimate driving experience. It’s why we love to drive. The raw, unassisted driving experience most enthusiasts lust after, but few ever reach. When the 240z came out in 1969, it was one of the fastest cars on the market. In an era when cars were all heavy, high horse power muscle machines, the 240z came in and showed everyone what a well-designed, lightweight chassis could do. The 1972 240z was a 4-speed. Back in those days, there were very few cars that had power assist, and thus, you had to become accustomed to no power steering or power brakes. Very quickly, drivers realized what the hype was all about because for the driver, every single detail of the road was translated through the steering wheel. In fact, it was easy to tell if you were even driving on the painted line, running over tar snakes or if there were ruts in the road. Around corners, the steering wheel would lighten and shudder, like you were losing traction. The brakes were great and gave a great sense of how close the car was to locking up the wheels; at the same time, applying the brakes gave drivers a great

CANADA’S PREMIER CUSTOM SHOP CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH SPECIAL VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW DISPLAY

V

ancouver, BC – Canada’s most respected custom car shop, 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford, will feature a special display as part of Western Canada’s premiere automotive event, the Vancouver International Auto Show. 360 will showcase an “in progress” the display of one of the country’s most anticipated restorations for 2016 – a rare 1932 Desoto that is being completely modified including stretching and widening and other extreme metal work and design for a high profile Calgary auto enthusiast. “The extreme nature of this build is creating excitement across North America, and we’re very proud to be working on such a exciting project, especially in our 10th anniversary year,” says 360 Fabrication President Rick Francoeur. “We’ve had the car largely

secured from public viewing during this build given the intellectual property around the artistic nature of the design, but given the number of people who have expressed an interest in seeing the vehicle, the owner has agreed to a very special “under construction” viewing only at the Vancouver International Auto show. This car will travel the international show circuit once done, but to be able to unveil it in full metal, in progress is very exciting.” The rebuilt Desoto will also feature a LS9 ZR1 motor. Other elements of the 360 10th anniversary display will include a rare, fully restored 1967 T5 Mustang and a special Focal Auto Display with special anniversary pricing for those looking for things such as a state of the art stealth sound system for their exotic or vintage vehicle.

ost individuals when starting their own business for the first time in British Columbia (B.C.) do not incorporate. They will usually register their name with the B.C. Corporate Registry Services as a sole proprietorship and operate as so until they feel the need to incorporate their business. Some businesses before incorporation will

hold assets or equipment that the owner will still want to use in the newly incorporated entity, upon which the appropriate GST election and Section 85 rollover will have to be contemplated with your professional corporate tax specialist. One area however that is often overlooked is what happens if your sole proprietorship holds trucks, trailers, cars or recreational vehicles that you wish to transfer into your newly incorporated company? We are all aware that when you move the vehicles into your new incorporated company you have to sign the appropriate transfer documents with ICBC for title ownership. However, you 20

In Your Corner are also subject to the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on the transfer of the vehicle, as technically even though you are moving the vehicle to your own company, under corporate law your incorporated company is treated as its own independent person. Many individuals who I have the pleasure of working with in the trucking and construction industry are often caught off guard by this tax and they don’t understand why they have to pay it twice. The trick is, you don’t. If your vehicle qualifies as a “Tax Paid Asset” under PST then you can claim an exemption upon transfer. However, if you bought your trailer, truck, car or other vehicle under the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) regime in B.C. a few years back and claimed the HST tax credit on purchase or claimed any PST credits upon purchase under the PST regime before or after HST, you will not be able to qualify for the exemption. Please note that there are also other specific rules for vehicles brought in from out of province or from outside of Canada. For those individuals looking to avoid this issue altogether by artificially lowering the transfer price of their vehicle or simply not reporting the transaction, be aware that both actions are highly punitive and the recourse through a PST audit is not worth it. The exemption from paying the PST on the transfer of the vehicle title to your new or existing incorporated company can save you tens of thousands of dollars in tax. Just make sure you are doing it correctly and have the right corporate tax professional guiding you through the process.

EATING WITH PASH-ION

I

was in downtown Vancouver one afternoon, and knew I’d be done around dinner time and did not want to deal with rush hour traffic. I contacted my former neighbour from Yaletown and suggested we grab a bite to eat so I could kill the rush hour wait. I had heard there was a good Italian place in Yaletown but didn’t know the name. I asked my neighbour to investigate the spot based on the only information I had: it was very good food, very small, and with a few tables inside outside. My neighbour’s investigation proved news worthy! We walked up the block from my old apartment and looked at the spot my neighbour thought could be the place; Yaletown L’Antipasto. It did indeed only have a few tables inside and a few outdoors in the cold. We looked at each, shrugged, and decided to give it a try. It wasn’t quite 6:00 pm yet, so we were able to get a small table for two without a reservation. There was only one other table occupied, but within a half hour, every seat was taken. So lesson to be learned; in future, make a reservation! I was shocked at the size of the kitchen. It had only a few burners and the smallest I had ever seen. As the menu was brought over I noticed they flew in the burrata cheese

from Italy. I hate the local mozzarella which tastes like plastic, and immediately ordered the Prosciutto & Buratta appetizer. While we waited for our appetizer, we were given olives and bread to snack on. I love olives and was in heaven with warm toasted bread! We were not disappointed by our appie! Flavourful cheese flown in from Italy was a treat! Melt in your mouth and perfect prosciutto. Next for the main dish we faced a challenge. What to order when you want to eat everything on the menu? We settled on Pappardelle “rosche rosche” but substituted penne, which is various braised meats in a tomato sauce, and Risotto al Radicchio con salsiccia e gorgonzola, which is Italian sausage mixed with gorgonzola cheese and radicchio. We shared our dishes and were amazed at how good it tasted! My neighbour declared he was coming back again after one bite! Sure he can come back, but he better call me to join him! I couldn’t believe such a tiny kitchen could produce such amazing food! To finish our meal, we had lavender crème Brule, which was done to perfection. Real lavender was used and not just the lavender sugar which I tend to favour due to the strong taste of lavender, but the flavour was not over bearing and quite subtle on the palette. There is a nice wine, coffee and tea list, with Italian wines available by the bottle. Such a cozy little place and it was completely packed with a lineup waiting in the cold in the middle of the week. No one was complaining of sitting outside in the cold either. Just be thankful you got any table! News of good food travels fast! I can’t wait for my next visit and try more delicious items on the menu. It just goes to show you that you don’t need a big fancy kitchen to produce food with big taste. MARCH / APRIL 2016

2016 Toyota Prius

2016 Toyota Prius

Western Launch and First Drive

O

f the vehicles that have changed the economical/ environmental footprint in the auto industry, the Toyota Prius has to be one of the top of the list. This utilitarian vehicle serves the function of being very economical, while delivering really no driving pleasure or enthusiasm. But it has had one heck of an impact, selling over 5 million units worldwide. People don’t seem to mind the Prius, and neither do taxi companies. Just drive around any major Canadian city and you’ll notice a majority of taxis being the “mighty” fuel-sipping Prius – yep they were, and are, seen everywhere. Toyota knew that it had to change the bland image of the vehicle to attract new consumers and voila, introducing the new 4th generation Toyota Prius. DRK Magazine was invited to the Western launch event, which took place on February 3rd in beautiful Vancouver, BC. Toyota Canada’s VP, Stephen Beatty, began the press presentation by reminding everyone the importance of the Prius; it was the world’s first hybrid car, launching in Japan in 1997 and then coming to Canada in 2000. The name Prius itself, meaning “to go before”, was perfect for the vehicle as it came into production before environmental awareness became a social and global concern. Following the presentation, media personnel were led outside to the Rosewood Hotel Georgia’s valet parking, where the new cars were staged. Colours of red, silver, blue and silver greeted us. For me, red was by far the best shade for this car, highlighting the new lines and angles. For all of us who are used to the (yawn) looks of the previous generations of the Prius, the new iteration will surprise you. The “Triangle Silhouette” styling has been reimagined to produce a Prius that, according to Toyota, is, “sure to turn heads.” While we think the new design is bold, different, and nice, turning heads might be a stretch. The stylish front fascia is lower, giving an aggressive stance that the previous Prius never had. From the side, the new Prius is longer, sleeker, and lower, conveying an athletic look that is very un-Prius like. Journalists were divided on the overall look of the new car; personally speaking, I believe Toyota is moving in the right direction and will surely put a smile on buyers’ faces. However, if we’re making comparisons, I 24

think the new Chevy Volt has more curb appeal. The cabin of the fourth gen Prius has been revamped with better materials, Jag Dhatt seating position, and ergonomics. jag@jgkmedia.ca Most things can be displayed and/or manipulated by steering-wheel mounted controls. I found the interior to be quite pleasing and tasteful, for a hybrid. I really liked the new lower seating position that is matched to the lower roofline; driving position is quite good and outward visibility is good, for the front and sides. Rear visibility is still a little difficult, thanks to the split rear windshield. My driving partner found it quite odd, probably because she had never driven any Prius before. For me, it reminds me of looking through the rear-view mirror of the old Honda CR-X. Rear seating is quite good, with enough room for five adults. Speaking of space, trunk space has been increased from 22 to 25 cubic feet. The new Prius is also the first to implement Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), an innovative approach to developing new platforms and powertrains. What does this mean? Well, for the Prius, it means a new high strength body structure, new double wishbone suspension and a lower center of gravity. Toyota claims these innovations should deliver a more engaging driving experience. Did it work? Let’s find out. Our media drive took us around Stanley Park, through downtown, and then to Richmond, BC. I can say that the new TGNA has made a difference. The previous Prius generations were sluggish around corners and usually had a line-up behind them on highways and freeways. The 2016 Prius is definitely more grounded, thanks to the lower center of gravity. It’s no sports car, and doesn’t claim to be; but is more aggressive going into corners. The new control arm rear suspension has improved handling quite a bit and the driver has much more confidence when pushing the car around windy roads, or even darting around in traffic. I’ve driven a 2013 Prius and let me tell you, I would never be able to push that car around like I can the new generation. During the media day, drivers were battling each other for achieving the best fuel economy, and yours truly got an amazing 2.7L/100km! Now, given that I wasn’t punching the throttle and speeds were below 80km/hour, it’s still a pretty impressive number. Since this was a one-day event, media didn’t have the opportunity to drive the car over an extended distance. But we were assured by Toyota that the Prius will be on the press fleets within the month, and after that time, we’ll give an in-depth driving review.

2016 BMW M2

ou’ve got the 1M, M3, M5, M6, X5M, and the X6M. Do you need more? Well, the folks at BMW sure thought so and introduced the all-new M2. From its lightweight aluminum design to painstakingly careful choices for tires, brakes, oil supply, and carbon fibre, the M2 is here to show up its predecessors. The new M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder will churn out 365 hp, with a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds. You have the option of the M double-clutch transmission, but if you really want to drive, then get the manual 6-speed for sure. Since it’s a BMW, the M2 does share some characteristics with its siblings; however, it is definitely more muscular, with its wider body, track wheels, and lower stance. On the inside, the pilot is greeted to Leather Dakota sports seats, embossed with M logo and contrast stitching in Polar Blue. Fit and finish is top-notch and clearly, this is a driver oriented car. I’ve yet to drive the M2, but if it shares the family bloodlines (as it should), you won’t be disappointed in the least.

T

his car was by far one of the most anticipated in the world, since we haven’t seen it since 2005. The new design is a hit at every auto show and it’s not hard to see why. The car is simply just beautiful. Acura DNA is present throughout, bringing cues from the MDX, RLX, TLX, and the ILX. The heart of the NSX is the 3.5L twin turbo V-6 which, according to Acura, takes 5 hours to build by hand by a team of master builders. On the road, the NSX will reach 60mph in just 3.5 seconds, thanks to its Sport Hybrid SH-All Wheel Drive. On the inside, the NSX’s interior’s lush colours, luxe materials and sleek lines combine beauty with purpose in an environment that is tailored to the driver. The NSX will start with a base price of $189,000, which is much higher than the last generation of the car. Now, it is on par with the Audi R8 and McLaren 570S. The new NSX will be available in late spring, and yes, they are selling already.

hy build another minivan when you’ve already got one of the best-selling in your lineup? Well, because you can. The 2017 Pacifica made its debut at a number of auto shows in North America and so far, it’s awed the crowds. The Pacifica has some pretty nice design lines, perfectly accented chrome trim, bold front end, and a great-looking interior. It will be available in both conventional and plug-in hybrid versions. If you buy the plug-in hybrid, you’ll lose the Stow ‘n Go seating as the battery pack will be under the second-row seats. Safety was paramount when designers were planning the Pacifica and the result? Over 100 standard and available features, including surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, brake assist, and countless airbags. For passenger comfort, there’s also a tonne of options, and I really like the dual 10” touchscreens on the front seatbacks. For those who need it, wireless connectivity will be available so you can link your smartphones and tablets without having to carry wires. Look for the new Chrysler Pacifica in late spring 2016. 26

hen cars are moving towards smaller engines, why shouldn’t the motorcycles? In the past couple of years, we’ve seen more and more motorcycles lower their displacement to appeal to another part of the crowd. Why buy a 600cc or 1000cc motorcycle when you’ll never use the power or don’t want to spend a lot of money on a sport bike? Well, after the huge success of the CBR250R, Honda has launched its new CBR300R. This new CBR300R has a 286cc single cylinder engine and pushes the old CBR250R a little further. It looks great, is super easy to maneuver and control, and if you accidentally drop it, it’s not going to break your back to lift it up again, even if you’re of smaller stature. In addition, with a curb weight of the 300R is only 357 pounds, novice riders will build confidence faster than on a bigger sport bike. Available in standard and ABS versions, go for ABS version for the Lower Mainland weather – the last thing you want is the rear wheel locking up after or during rain. Price starts at $4,699.

2016 Toyota Tacoma

Predictably, the Tacoma rides rough unloaded, on a firm suspension designed to handle lots of weight rather than providing a sedan-like ride. What surprised me most about the Tacoma -- and consequently left me most disappointed with this new design -- is that its front seats continue to feel cramped, particularly in terms of headroom. Even with the height-adjustable driver’s seat at its lowest setting (keeping in mind that I stand a modest five-foot-seven) the top of the windshield encroached into my line of sight just as it did in the old Tacoma. Couple that with generous ground clearance, and you get a truck that requires you to climb up into it while simultaneously ducking your head under the top of the door frame. Once in, the driver’s seat is positioned oddly close to the floor, so that instead of the upright seating position you’d expect in a truck, your legs are splayed forward, sports-car style. Maybe I’m missing the appeal of this design quirk, but it continues to be my least favourite thing about the Tacoma. Toyota’s new design brings a slicker dashboard that includes touchscreen infotainment and niceties like available dual-zone automatic climate control. It comes with its own oddities as well, like the tiny, hard-to-read air conditioning temperature display that appears to be angled down, away from front seat occupants’ eyes. Missing entirely from the climate controls is a rear window defroster, which proved an annoyance in humid weather that fogged up the rear glass unless the air conditioning was running

at nearly full blast. That’s a welcome feature you’ll find in GM’s mid-size Colorado and Canyon twins. For all that, the Tacoma’s four-door “Double Cab” body style offers good space for a pair of average-sized rear seat passengers. The downside in the coach compartment is that the rear seats’ bottom cushions don’t flip up to reveal a flat floor. The best you can do is flip them forward and fold the seatbacks down, which also reveals handy hidden storage behind the seats. But the old Tacoma had hidden storage too, and its seatbacks formed a flatter load surface. A Tacoma in Double Cab configuration starts at $37,020, a price that includes the V6 engine and four-wheel drive; my test truck was optioned with a TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Sport upgrade package that drove the MSRP up to $40,935, adding niceties such as wireless smartphone charging, dual-zone climate control, blind spot monitoring, and a power sunroof on top of an already-generous list of standard equipment. Toyota has done well to introduce additional refinement and desirable convenience features to the Tacoma, but the quirks baked into this design suggest a truck conceived to appeal to existing Tacoma owners, rather than to steal buyers from the makers of other mid-size trucks. That will work out just fine for Toyota -- the Tacoma has a large, loyal following -- but whether it will work for buyers new to the brand is another question altogether. MARCH / APRIL 2016

great number of people who want more from their vehicle. I’m still new to the fabrication aspect of my industry, but over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from some of the best installers and develop techniques on how to approach customization. I’ve learned you have to be a little bit of an artist and think a lot like a manufacturing engineer in order to deliver a product that is pleasing to look at, functional, and can be done in a timely fashion. Gone are the days of huge trunks taking up your entire cargo area. In comes the new era of SQ (sound quality) systems, which are compact, look like they came with the car, or hidden, and sound great. A couple of the personal projects that I put together exercised my building abilities and design thought process. I developed two systems that practically blow away any stock “premium” sound system, but are oblivious to passengers as to their existence; that is, until the passengers crank up that volume knob. Both vehicles are my father’s, so he now is enjoying the

Getting Personal is Rewarding outcome of all my hard work! After putting me through university, needless to say, he deserves it! The first project was a 1993 Toyota Camry with over 200,000 km. The car, however, is mint and always gets complements on its condition. At the time, I thought it was a great car to install a “stealth audio” system since it’s built solid and would provide a solid foundation to work with. The car is outfitted with an Alpine Electronics double din screen for the head unit, Type S coaxial speakers all around with Stinger Roadkill sound deadening material, a custom enclosed fibreglass Type S 10” sub woofer in the corner of the trunk; and all powered by an Alpine Electronics MRX 5 channel amplifier. The end result that you get is an entry level sound system with some custom flare and high level of functionality because the amplifier is completely hidden and the sub woofer occupies an area of the trunk that doesn’t get used. Everyone who has listened to this sound system is amazed at how good the music sounds! Then when I tell them it was done with entry level products, imagine their delight to know that they don’t have to buy the most expensive products on the showroom floor to get very satisfying results. The second project was a 2001 Pontiac Montana with just over 100,000 km – still has that new car smell! This was an exercise to see how compact I could build an enclosure, but still get good output from it. The van already had a Pioneer double din screen with navigation that I had installed a few

years ago. Now I added a Kenwood 5 channel amplifier for its power output and very compact design. The enclosure was a bit of a challenge because I only have the surface area of the center console to work with as I wanted the subs to be underneath it, so they are hidden from plain sight. For base, we used JL Audio’s W3 6” sub woofers and kept the factory speakers (for now). I wanted to show that one can amplify factory speakers, add subs and get significant gains in sound quality, but keep the budget on the lower side of the spectrum. Again, the installed system is a pleasant surprise because it hits the low notes and more details in the music and from the artist can be heard. This year, I intend to build another compact SQ setup in my 2006 Nissan 350Z to show the tuner and sports car world that you can have a great sounding system without weighing down the car. To see what else I’m working on, check out my Youtube channel and Facebook page, AnthonyJ350.

Car Necessities for Parents – A Mother’s Perspective

W

hen I became a mom for the first time about 7 years ago, I was always anxious to take my girl (now girls) out and about in our car. Whether going to a family member’s house, store, or the park, I remember that it was always a chore to get my kids ready for the trips. What’s more, there were so many times I thought, “I wish I had that item in the car to make life easier.” With time and experience, the commutes became easier. But with the girls growing older, new problems arose. For example, when my elder daughter began to sit in her forward-facing car seat, her shoes would always touch the back of the front seat, which never was a concern to me before – my husband likes to keep a squeaky clean car so, of course, something had to be done. After some of our friends or family members had children, I shared my experiences with them so that their commutes with their children would be easier. In this column, I wanted to share, based on my experiences, the top items to keep in your car if you have children. Organizer: An organizer helps keep children’s items neatly stored in your car. The two most common ones types are the ones that go behind the seat, or ones that sit on the seat. I found that having an organizer was great because rather than sticking everything in the pockets behind the seat, items have a proper location. What’s more is that these organizers can be moved from car to car. Baby Wipes: No explanation needed here. Baby wipes are a definite must-have because they have so many uses. From changing diapers and cleaning spills to wiping hands and mouths, baby wipes have saved me many a day. Seat Back Protector: Once your children start sitting in forward facing seats, it’s a good idea to invest in a seat back protector (you could make one easily yourself as well). Believe it or not, even though it’s just dirt, it’s not easy to clean, 34

especially with cloth seats. Neck Guards for Babies: If you’ve ever seen your baby’s head moving around when he or she is sleeping, then you know that a neck guard is important. Not only will it give your baby a more comfortable sleep, but helps protect the neck as well from sudden jerks. Jasleen Dutt Seat Saver: Any parent knows that when kids eat or drink in the car, they will undoubtedly spill something. A seat protector goes under the car seat and does just that – protects the rear seat from messes and even cuts and tears. I used to take the seat protector out once a week, shake or rinse it, and put it back. Towels/Blankets: For a short time, my younger daughter would, once in a while, throw up in the car and at those times, there were never enough tissues. Rather, I began to keep a couple of towels, of varying sizes, in the car and they were game changers. The towels were also handy for other emergencies. Keeping extra blankets, especially during fall and winter, were very important and are highly recommended. Car Window Shades: Many vehicles now have some sort of tinting on the rear windows. Never-the-less, invest in some sort of window shade to keep sunlight and heat off your children. There are varying styles and shapes, so choose the one that fits your car best. Bluetooth Speakerphone: Many cars nowadays come standard with Bluetooth connectivity. But for those of you who don’t have this feature, it’s not only convenient but required by law if using a cell phone. Trust me, if you have children in your car, don’t use a cell phone when driving unless you have a Bluetooth device, because a split second bad decision could ruin your world. I hope that this list of essential car items for parents will be useful and that just by reading this article, you will be prompted to make your commute with your children easier. These are simple ideas that will decrease your stress levels when driving with your children. At the end of the day, always be safe because our children are our most valuable assets and can never be replaced.

Volvo plans to do away with car keys

I

n its first appearance at Mobile World Congress, taking place in Barcelona February 22-25, Volvo will be attempting to unlock the smartphone’s potential and in doing so, do away with car keys. Bundling an app as part of a new car’s features is not in itself groundbreaking. Most premium marques offer drivers remote access to things like a car’s location, fuel reserves and the ability to lock, unlock or start the car or set the climate control via their phone. But from 2017, Volvo will be offering its cars key-free and it’s not a gimmick. “We are not interested in technology for the sake of technology. New technology has to make our customers’ lives easier and save them time,” said Henrik Green, Vice President Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars. Instead, by using an app and a Bluetooth connection for locking, unlocking and starting a car, Volvo believes it can also unlock new features and services. “Mobility needs are evolving and so are our customers’ expectation to access cars in an uncomplicated way,” explains Green. Car firms have started looking beyond the business of making cars and to the future of personal mobility and how to deliver services in a cleaner, greener way.

For example, Ford will be showcasing its FordPass platform at this year’s MWC. It allows users to rent cars and to plan journeys that use public and private transport. GM is partnering with Lyft to offer ride-sharing to its customers. But with Volvo’s digital key, it is aiming to turn consumers’ cars into an ad-hoc ride-sharing pool. “Our innovative digital key technology has the potential to completely change how a Volvo can be accessed and shared. Instead of sitting idle in a parking lot the entire day, cars could be used more often and efficiently by whoever the owner wishes,” said Green. Owners could grant one-time access to their car to others or borrow another car when on business or vacationing in another country for instance. Volvo has already launched a service in its native Sweden where its customers can give their car’s location as a delivery address for parcels and packages, and a digital key for all is a logical next step. But how many more steps is anyone’s guess. “There are obviously many permutations when it comes to how this shared key technology can be used,” said Martin Rosenqvist, Volvo’s New Car Director, Special Products. “We look forward to seeing how else this technology might be used in the future and we welcome any and all ideas.” - CTV News

emember back to a time when vehicles could primarily be classified as standard cars, trucks, vans and SUVs? I sure don’t, as today’s automotive segments have been spliced and split into all kinds of alternate categories. One of the most recent ones to be introduced is the subcompact crossover

SUV, which as you have probably guessed from the name, is slightly smaller than a conventional crossover. Honda has entered this new arena quite early in the game with the release of the uniquely sized and positioned 2016 HR-V, which the automaker is banking on to become an instant hit. “We are targeting 12-month sales of 10,000 units. It will introduce a new generation of buyers to the Honda Brand,” says Jean Marc Leclerc, vice president of auto sales and marketing,

during a product launch presentation. Leclerc referred to the HR-V as the “most powerful new weapon in the light truck arsenal.” Early sales figures are good — at the end of 2015, the company had moved 8,959 units putting it just behind the popular Fit hatchback. Honda, along with a handful of other manufacturers like Mercedes with the GLA and Mazda and their CX-3, are responsible for creating the tiny SUV automotive segment. Size-wise, the HR-V (2,610 millimetre wheelbase) is neatly nestled in-between the Fit (2,350 mm) and the CR-V (2,620 mm), and aimed at singles, dual income no kids couples and empty nesters wanting a fun, sophisticated ride that doesn’t compromise versatility. Hayato Mori, senior product planning and business development senior manager, calls the latest offering a mix of a coupe, SUV and minivan, taking the best traits of all three. Indeed, on the outside, the blacked-out headlight-grille combo and hidden rear door handles give it an instant sporty appeal; the slightly raised stance and fender flares suggest weekends driving to mountain bike trails; and the wide tailgate and cargo area says ‘Take me on Costco runs.” The heart beating underneath the hood of the HR-V is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC engine pumping out 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the trim (LX/EX/EX-L Navi) you can have front or all-wheel drive with a continuously variable transmission or six-speed manual transmission (base LX and EX only). The press vehicle I was given was the FWD with CVT sprayed in Crystal Black Pearl.

2016 Honda HR-V Mori mentions that one of the many goals of the design was to strike a balance between fuel economy and power output. Two-wheel drive variants with the CVT are the gas thriftiest of the bunch, netting an estimated 7.6 L/100 km of combined highway and city driving, although my own observed number through 233 kilometres of mixeduse testing came in higher at 11.6. With the six-speed, consumption rises a little, to 8.3 L/100 km. Finally, the allwheel drive with the CVT holds a middle average of 8.1 L/100 km. I don’t have much to report on in regards to the CVT equipped in my HR-V, other than to say it worked. Admittedly, I would have much rather driven the manual gearbox, but I did get the opportunity to try the six-speed briefly at another event. I was delighted at how crisp the shifts felt, and the manner in which the lever satisfyingly clicks into each gear is reminiscent of Honda’s racier models like the Civic Si. Handling definitely feels more car than van or even regular-sized crossover-like, something that was thoroughly evaluated when I had to execute an emergency manoeuvre entering an onramp in order to avoid a confused motorist. The four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electronic brake distribution are also excellent. A unique feature is the auto brake hold, operated by a switch underneath the electronic parking brake on the centre console. When on, the driver is free to take his or her foot off the pedal and the brakes will continue to be automatically held until the accelerator is tapped. During one weekend afternoon trying to leave a busy winding parkade, this function came in especially handy in bumper-to-bumper traffic and freed my right leg from the monotony of repetitive braking. Trying out the back bench, I revelled in the 998 mm of rear legroom, while playing with the second row Magic Seat — identical to the one found in the Fit — which allows for a variety of folded configurations to accommodate large

or oddly shaped objects. For instance, a surfboard can be squeezed in when you activate what Honda has named “Long Mode,” where you tilt both the front and rear passenger seat at the same time. Folding both rear seats is known to as “Utility Mode,” yielding a maximum 1,665 litres (1,631 if AWD) of carrying capacity. There’s even a “Tall Mode” where the base of the rear seat flips up to make room for something like a potted plant. The 2016 Honda HR-V is built in Celaya, Mexico and is on sale now. Pricing starts at $20,690. MARCH / APRIL 2016

Buying a Vehicle in 2016

A few Things to Think About

uying a new car is one of the biggest purchases most people will make in their lives, aside from a home. The car industry has evolved so much over the last 1015 years, and especially the last 5 years, which really gives consumers much more information right at their

fingertips. With the internet being so readily available, there is so much more information on every car, its features, benefits and, of course, reviews. Here are a few tips to enhance your car buying experience:

1) KNOW YOUR BUDGET – It’s important to sit down and first decide how much you are willing to spend on a new car. There’s no bigger letdown than finding the vehicle you want, only to realize it’s way out of your budget. 2) KNOW YOUR DEAL BREAKERS - For instance, do you need to have all wheel drive? Is navigation important to you? There are so many options that are now standard in vehicles, so have an idea of what is critical, such as lane departure warning, blind spot alert, and back up cameras. Know what you need and what you can live without. 42

Buying a Vehicle in 2016 3) NARROW DOWN YOUR TOP THREE – Research, research, research. Talk to friends, read reviews, see what fits your budget, and your required options. Go to your top three vehicles online and build the car on the company website. Most brands will let you build the exact car you are looking for, with the options you want! At the end, did it fit your budget? 4) TEST DRIVE – It’s so important to get behind the wheel and TRY the vehicle! Sales Associates at every store are trained to demonstrate all the vehicle’s options. It’s their job to ensure you make an informed decision on the vehicle of your choice. There’s a common perception that a test drive may, “waste the sales person’s time”. This is not the case – drive the vehicle, play with the options and test it out thoroughly. If you have any questions, make sure to ask. 5) ASK QUESTIONS – Before you settle on a vehicle, ask the important questions. What does the warranty include? Most brands have excellent warranties, but know the parameters. Is it based on years and/or kilometers? If you do a lot of driving, know your options. Ask about the maintenance requirements. How often is service required for proper maintenance? What is the price of regular service? These answers will better define your budget and ensure there are no surprises after your purchase. 6) BUY FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER – Again, with so many choices, do your research. Use Google, dealership ratings, etc. This is a great way to see what other consumers are saying about the dealer you are buying from! Buy from an established and reputable organization that is not only there during, but also long after, your purchase. Caveat emptor (buyer beware) – these words say it all. Make your car purchase experience a positive one by doing your due diligence. And then, enjoy your vehicle!
