cannot believe it’s already May and the weather has warmed up considerably in the Vancouver area. Already there’s been summer like temperatures even though it’s only spring. With that being said, we’d like all of our readers to be careful of pedestrians, bikers, and motorcycle riders. In the same breath, if you are a rider or pedestrian, remember that you must also abide by the laws. Protect yourself at all times. The 2016 Vancouver International Auto Show was held in March and what a show! Although the show was shorter by a day this year, record attendance numbers were reached. JGK Media, parent company of DRK Magazine, was the official South-Asian media partner with the show. Congratulations to the New Car Dealers Association of BC, Drive Marketing Group, and Laura Balance Media Group for a phenomenal show. See this issue for coverage and pictures. March also saw the launch of the all-new 2016 Honda Civic Coupe. Once again, DRK Magazine was invited to the media event and all of us in the office firmly believe it’s the best Civic to date. I was never a fan of Civic-nation, but this one changed my mind. Visit www.rackandopinion.ca for full coverage, complete with pictures, of the Civic Coupe launch event. This issue brings lots of great stories, reviews, and coverage of some great events. Our editorial team spends a lot of time on their reviews so that you have unbiased and up-to-date information about cars, motorcycles, and gadgets. If you have any comments, send us a line at any time. Thank you to all our readers – follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/DRKmagazine.

Audi Offers a New One-off Luxury Stretch

A

udi has revealed the lengths it will go to to meet a client’s demands, and, in the case of the one-off A8 L luxury car unveiled on Monday, those lengths add up to 6.36 metres. The bespoke limousine, based on

the company’s flagship A8 L model, took a year to develop. And while it simply looks like a stretched version of a standard car, Audi needed to totally redesign and rebuild everything beyond the A Pillar to ensure

that six people could travel in complete comfort and that each occupant had his or her own door for getting in and out of the car. Each passenger gets individual access to a full multimedia entertainment system while the very rear seat occupants also have access to an integrated cooler. Perhaps most impressive is that despite the car’s huge size, Audi has managed to fit it with the same Quattro all-wheel drive system and ensure a 0-100km/h time of 7.1 seconds as well as the obligatory electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. Despite being a oneoff commission for a European client, on Monday Audi also confirmed that it has already received orders for the car, which it is tentatively calling the A8L Extended.

Pirelli and Michelin Top J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Study

J

.D. Power and Associates have released the results from its 2016 Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study, and Michelin and Pirelli take top prize. Michelin took top spot in three out of four categories: Luxury, Passenger Car and Truck/Utility. The sports performance tire segment was won by Pirelli for the third year in a row, and the fifth year out of the last seven. In all of the four categories, Michelin or Pirelli filled one of the top two spots. Michelin is now the all-time leader

in the J.D. Power and Associates’ awards with 80, a total that is four times more than any other competitor. “At Michelin, we have always been strongly committed to the quality and performance of our tires at every level, and we never stop finding ways to remain the leading innovator to improve our tires and satisfy the high expectations of newcar buyers,” said Ken Kruithof, Michelin North and South America’s vice president of operations for passenger and light truck original equipment tires.

FCA Looks to Spark Pacifica Sales With the Help of a Comedian

F

iat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is taking a different approach to selling its latest Pacifica minivan — it’s directing its focus towards dads, rather than the typical “soccer mom.” The FCA’s latest marketing campaign is called “Dad Brand,” and has opted to feature stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, a father of five, largely known for his humour revolving around fatherhood. The ads are comprised of four 30-second spots with more to follow that showcase the Chrysler Pacifica assisting Gaffigan on keeping up his “Dad Brand.” Gaffigan is joined in the ads with his and children. “As the Chrysler brand is reinventing the minivan from the ground up, the objective of our campaign is to challenge the conventional category stereotypes and appeal to a new generation of minivan buyers, including younger families,” said Olivier Francois, FCA’s global chief marketing officer.

All-New Continental Greets Customers with Warm and Inviting Welcome

T

he all-new 2017 Lincoln Continental offers customers the additional luxury of a warm and inviting welcome with Lincoln’s signature Approach Detection technology. “The Lincoln Approach Detection does more than just turn on lights,” said Sheryl Connelly, Ford Motor Company global consumer trends and futuring manager. “It allows Continental to welcome you as if arriving at a friend’s house for dinner, or checking into a resort. It makes you feel at home where you have everything you need and you are in a serene and familiar space.” Lincoln first unveiled its Approach Detection technology on the first-ever 2015 MKC. This technology enables the vehicle to sense when the driver, carrying the key fob, comes within a range of up to 8 feet welcoming them and indicating it is ready to go. “The signature dynamic lighting of the Approach Detection feature is akin to the Continental greeting you with a warm smile,” said Solomon Song, Lincoln exterior design manager. “This is a subtle touch that reinforces our commitment to give every Lincoln client what we call quiet luxury – vehicles and experiences that are elegant, effortlessly powerful and serene.”

Tesla to Launch New Car Cheaper than Model 3

T

esla CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla’s fourth generation cars will be more affordable than the newly unveiled Model 3. “I’m excited about being able to produce a car that most people can afford,” said Musk. “With fourth generation and smaller cars and whatnot, we’ll ultimately be in the position where everyone will be able to afford the car.” The Model 3 has already picked up over 325, 000 pre-orders, due to its attractive $35,000 (USD) price tag. An even cheaper Tesla is sure to draw even a bigger crowds. 8

BC Announces Stiffer Distracted Driving Penalties

V

ANCOUVER – The province is getting tougher with people caught driving while distracted. As of June 1st, those caught with a phone in their hand while behind the wheel in BC will have to pay a minimum of $543. This is the sum of an initial $368 fine (an increase from the existing fine of $167) and the $175 cost to pay off points against the licence. Each offence will come with four penalty points, up from the existing three. With a minimum ICBC Driver Penalty Point premium of $520, a second offence within one year will cost $888. A fifth offence will cost $3,760; a 10th runs $14,520. Transportation Minister Todd Stone says this can be a life-ruining habit that should be seen in the same light as drunk driving. He adds there are hundreds of tragic stories. “An 18-year-old that was driving his car — and his parents were in a car right behind him — suddenly swerved into oncoming traffic, had a head-on and was killed right in front of his parents. It turns out, he was on his phone.” Emailing or texting while driving will become a “high risk offence,” putting it at the same level as excessive speeding and driving without due care and attention. “L” or “N” drivers will have their driving records reviewed after the first offence, with a possible prohibition of up to six months — longer for repeat offences. All drivers will be subject to a review after the second offence. The superintendent of motor vehicle is also allowed to prohibit drivers based on referrals from ICBC or police. Public Safety Minister Mike Morris says the tougher penalties will target irresponsible drivers where it hurts — their wallets and a loss of privileges. He says distracted driving or driver inattention claimed 66 lives in BC in 2014, when more than 600 people were seriously hurt. Morris adds they will track driver behaviour after these new penalties come into effect and fines could rise again if police aren’t seeing a change.

Honda Launches All-New Civic Coupe in Vancouver The first three months of March saw stormy, drizzly, and depressing weather. There was nothing that really could lift the spirits because of day after day of cold and/or rain. Well, it seems that there needed to be something exciting to open the skies.

engineering, offer a great ride, are reasonably priced, and have great resale value. The new Coupe is one of the best Civics ever built. The silhouette of the car is mesmerizing – I was never a fan of the Civic Coupe, but this one I really liked. The top-of-the-line Touring Edition

Vancouver was the launch site for the all-new 2016 Honda Civic Coupe. Following a very successful launch of the Civic Sedan, the Coupe was not to be left behind. Media personnel were invited to spend three days with the Honda Canada PR team and of course, with the Coupe. The Honda Civic has been Canada’s best-selling car for the past 17 years, and for good reason. The cars are built solid, have excellent

test cars were equipped with the all-new turbocharged 1.5L engine that is matched to a CVT. There is a six-speed manual available, but only on the base trim. But hold on, Honda promises a manual option with the turbocharged motor next year. And, wait for it, there is also a hint of a great Si version. A

BMW 650i Gran Coupé (GC) – now here’s terminology that will have many scratching their heads. Is it a two-door? Nope. Okay, then does it have a hatch? Nope again. So what is it? Well, the 650i GC is a beautiful, sleek, sexy, “hatchback looking” vehicle that gives buyers the size of the 6-series, but with two extra doors and a full trunk. It’s quite a stunner, really, and fits in nicely between the flagship 7-series and the mid-sized 5-series. BMW, it seems, now has a vehicle that fits any buyer’s needs, unless of course, you’re in the market for a pick-up truck.

nitially unveiled in 2012, the 6-series Gran Coupé comes in two variations for the North American market: the 640i and the 650i, the latter of which was my test vehicle. With the Frozen Grey matte paint scheme, the 650i xDrive GC reminded me of a shark – quiet, streamlined, slick and yet brutally aggressive and powerful. In my opinion, this is probably one of the best looking cars in this segment. But, our tester came equipped with 18” tires and wheels, which doesn’t really show off the beautiful lines of the car like a set of 20” or 22” would. Too bad I was driving this in spring and not summer. Now, if you’re looking at other options, the Audi A7, Mercedes CLS, Porsche Panamera and even the Jaguar XJ are in the same “grey” coupé category. If we’re talking 12

MAY / JUNE 2016

about comparisons still, what will come as a surprise is that the Gran Coupé is quite a bit more expensive than the others listed, and starts at $102,000. That’s a lot of money for this car. Is it worth it? Let’s find out. BMW has trademarked the slogan, “the ultimate driving machine” and it’s for good reason. I’ve owned two BMW’s and I couldn’t agree more; this 650i Gran Coupé continues the tradition. For a car to be labeled with such prestigious nomenclature, it has to be impeccable all around. Our test vehicle included the $7000 Executive Package and it’s well worth the cash. There’s full hand-stitched leather on the dash and door panels, beautiful two-toned heated and cooled leather seats (front and back), surround view camera, heads-up display, and a full TFT dash, just to name a few. Interior fit and finish is perfect –

Jag Dhatt jag@jgkmedia.ca

2016 BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupé

BMW doesn’t disappoint, and neither does the engine. If I were to buy a 6-series Gran Coupé, there’s no question I would buy the V8. The 4.4L N63 engine, complete with turbocharging, provides such an amazing driving experience that honestly, you can’t point any fingers at. There’s 445hp and 480 ft-lb of torque, to all 4 wheels, that’s useable right throughout the rpm range. If you want to cruise, there’s a nice growl from the exhaust that’s not overpowering. However, if you need to pass someone on the highway, stomp on the gas and the baffles open, allowing the standard sport exhaust to really sing its tune. One thing that BMW has really capitalized on is not charging extra for the Adaptive Drive modes. On this particular 650i GC, there’s ECO Pro, Comfort Plus, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, so yeah, just pick one. With this car, everything just works so well together: the engine, 8-speed ZF transmission, suspension, and of course, the xDrive. Each manufacturer has its own 4-wheel drive system and BMW’s works just as well as any others, giving drivers confidence while driving on any road conditions. Driving the 650i xDrive is a real treat, and even more so when the seats wrap around you as if they’re custom tailored. Just before I had this vehicle, I had driven the 2016 Lexus GS F, which I think has one of the best seats on the market. Personally, I prefer the GS F seats, but the 650i did have massage, so there’s a toss-up here. Rear passengers enjoy a good amount of space, but it’s a little snug for a car of this size. And on top of this, BMW says this is a 5-passenger car, but in all honesty, the middle rear seat has this huge center console; if you’re

the unfortunate one straddling it, you won’t be too happy. This car has about the same rear legroom as the Jaguar XJ, and slightly less than an Audi A7. That being said, the seats are all very comfortable, even for long drives. Back to the driving aspect, the BMW 650i xDrive put a smile on my face for the entire week. This car is a great balance between a sports car and a luxury sedan that will fit a family of four. During my time with the car, there were a few harrowing days of stormy weather, with rain beating down day and night. This vehicle, equipped with a plethora of safety features, made me feel safe and secure. I had the opportunity to drive the Gran Coupé to Squamish and back, and what a treat. Opening up the throttle on the windy roads shows the sports car DNA of this coupé. The steering is fantastic and really connects the driver with the road. This vehicle did everything I expected it to, and then some. So, are there any shortcomings? Well, yes, and they are minor. First of all, this is not a true 5-passenger car as BMW claims, but for short drives, it’s manageable. Second, I was surprised that there was no power trunk, a feature that’s standard on many cars, even nonluxury ones. It should be standard equipment. Finally, there’s that price sticker. This is the most expensive vehicle in this segment, but BMW doesn’t seem to mind because they know people are willing to pay a premium price for this premium vehicle. If price is not a deterrent, the 650i xDrive Gran Coupé may be the perfect car for you. MAY / JUNE 2016

Brian Jessel Cabriolet Gala 2016

Brian Jessel Cabriolet Gala 2016 - A Huge Success Written by: Jasleen Dutt

T

his year’s Brian Jessel BMW Cabriolet Charity Gala was a special one – not only did it mark 100 years of BMW, but also 30 years of Brian Jessel BMW. JGK Media, parent company of DRK Magazine, has been proud to be a part of this amazing event for the past 4 years. The posh event took place at the Brian Jessel dealership, located on Boundary Road in Vancouver, BC. Each year, some pretty big names are at center stage at the Cabriolet Gala; in the past, there’s been Jay Leno, Max Zipursky, Colin James, Rosette, The Barenaked Ladies, and CeeLo Green. For 2016, Juno nominated, Hollywood/Universal Recording artist, Shawn Hook wowed the crowd with some pretty sensational songs. In addition, Holt Renfew showcased their Spring Fashion segment at the show.

Brian Jessel Cabriolet Gala 2016 Recently, we had a chance to sit with Diana Zoppa, Marketing Manager and Cabrio Gala Event Chair at Brian Jessel BMW, and ask her a few questions. DRK: For how many years has the Cabriolet Gala taken place? DZ: 2016 marked the 11th year of the Cabriolet Gala. DRK: How did this event first start? DZ: Brian Jessel wanted to start an event that gave back to the community. It was his vision to have the event at the dealership where people could mingle, enjoy great food, drinks, and entertainment, and give back to the community in a meaningful way. DRK: What charity does the Cabrio Gala support? DZ: Beginning in 2014, the Brian Jessel BMW Cabriolet Charity Gala’s official charities are Pancreatic Cancer Canada and Pancreas Centre BC. These charities are special because last year, Brian’s father passed away from pancreatic cancer – so it’s meaningful to the Brian Jessel family. DRK: How much money was raised this year? DZ: I’m pleased to say that our goal of $100,000 was reached this year. In the past few years, there has been a steady increase in funds raised. DRK: How many people attended the show this year? DZ: This year, we had about 800 people in attendance. DRK: In your opinion, what were some of the highlights? DZ: Wow! I think that the overall room setup was spectacular, where all aspects of the show were well orchestrated. We were also happy to present Brian Jessel with a big bottle of champagne as a 30-year tribute. He is such a great leader and is an inspiration to all of us. DRK: What can we look forward to next year? DZ: All I can say is that next year’s show will be even bigger and better.

HYBRID

p until a few years ago, there were two schools of rub. Also, putting the car in reverse can end in some awkward leg thought when it came to the word “Hybrid”: the touching. There are no rear seats in the car, but rather two handy average person thought practical, fuel efficient sunken storage spaces that keep books and bags from sliding about. and sensible, while most enthusiasts felt Hybrid And once the rear wall is folded down, the trunk space is unreal. I meant boring, slow and soulless. That being said, managed to easily fit 3 fully loaded golf bags in the rear and still had the introduction of hybrid supercars has changed the meaning of the enough space to pull the privacy shield closed. Driving the CR-Z is where I was most surprised. The car is light, word altogether. Now, the word Hybrid is attached to brands like Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren, all of which have cars with ridiculous and I mean really light. At only 2700lbs, it whips around corners amounts of horsepower at a ludicrous cost. Honda is reaching out to like a go-cart. The 130hp electric-assisted 1.5L engine has more the younger crowd with their version of a sporty, hybrid, affordable than enough oomph to spin the front tires and throw the car around. two-door coupe. I know some of you are reading this are thinking, Don’t get me wrong, the CR-Z is no rocket ship, but it will have you “How could Honda’s version of a car that’s hybrid, like a Prius, be grinning ear to ear on every bit of winding road you can find. The that much different?” Believe me, I said the same thing and I was suspension is soft and meant for comfort, but it makes you feel like you’re going faster than you actually are. You feel like Schumacher quite pleasantly surprised. Dropping into the driver seat – yes, dropping, was the first racing around Suzuka on the ragged edge, before realizing you just surprise. I swear the seat is 4 inches off the ground, but the low went through a roundabout at 60km/h. I absolutely adored driving this car. I went out of my way to take the long way home position actually works for this car. The driving position every day. Even commuting in downtown Vancouver was is actually quite nicely laid out. The dash seems to wrap around you, with everything within arm’s reach. a breeze. The CR-Z is so small, it fits in nearly every parking spot you can find. And bonus, the backup camera The gauge cluster feels like the cockpit of a fighter jet. There’s a large tach right in the middle, lit up with blue and blind spot camera in the right hand mirror makes parallel parking an absolute breeze. The CR-Z has three LED’s and a holographic style digital speed readout in the center. The steering wheel is quite small and has an driving modes – Economy, Standard and Sport. There’s even an S+ button that give you an extra speed boost abundance of buttons on it; but it can’t be much bigger because the interior isn’t very wide. I could easily reach for passing. In my opinion, the standard transmission makes this car. It creates a whole new driving experience, over and pull something out of the passenger’s door pocket. The sport leather seats are really comfortable, but something I feel like the CVT option would absolutely ruin. don’t offer a lot of adjustment. I’m not a huge guy, but Aman Sundher The CR-Z is not a bad looking car and starting at if you put another 6’ adult in the car next to me, elbows 18

2016 Honda CR-Z Hybrid

$26,290, it’s one heck of a value. At first glance, most people don’t realize it’s a Hybrid. It is quite bold and a lot sportier than your typical affordable compact. There’s an aggressive stance to it, almost like you know there’s more to it than meets the eye. Sleek body lines, LED lights and 17” alloy wheels have really updated its look. The CR-Z is somewhat of a successor to the old CR-X from the late 80’s and early 90’s. The body lines are very similar and they both have the classic two-piece rear glass: one standard piece of glass on top of the hatch and another piece molded in between the taillights to give you a clear view of the police officer pulling you over. The CR-X of my youth was the hooligan’s car and the new incarnation seems to be right on track. Cheap, light and relatively fast, you can see where the CR-Z gets its sporting pedigree. The 2016 Honda CR-Z is a great example of how affordable commuters can still be fun. The practicality of a hybrid doesn’t have to ruin the enthusiast’s driving experience. With the CR-Z, Honda has completely changed what a Hybrid can be.

EATING WITH PASH-ION

I

got an email from Open Table showing the restaurant rankings in the lower mainland. The Pear Tree Restaurant was at the top of the list, so I knew I had to investigate it for myself. The menu changes with the seasons, so diners can enjoy a different experience with each seasonal visit. I was pre-warned that my meal would be either hit or miss depending on the evolving menu. Luckily for me, it was a hit! There was a three course chef sample Seasonal Table d’Hote at a set price offering an appetizer, main course and dessert. We decided to explore the menu and variety on the regular menu. As we perused the menu, a scrumptious brioche bread with butter was brought to the table. It was light and airy, yet had a cake-like texture. I longed for another piece. The waiter brought a tray with only one slice of bread remaining. I was shocked and horrified when he offered it to the gentleman at the table instead of myself. It looks like someone wasn’t well versed in charm school. A gentleman of distinction always offers tidings to the lady first! Luckily my escort, who was a gentleman, quickly remedied the rudeness by offering the last slice of bread to me. The waiter also didn’t take my order first and cut me off mid sentence to take the gentleman’s order ahead of mine. Someone needs to read the Emily Post Etiquette guide! For appetizers, I ordered the Witloof salad which had watercress, pear

dressing and aged gouda. My dinner companion had the lobster cappuccino. The salad was tasty and I enjoyed the candied walnuts sprinkled on top, but I must say that the lobster cappuccino was one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth! It was amazing! For main courses we had a lamb dish and the beef tenderloin. The beef was organic Blue Goose and the lamb was raised in Alberta. Both were tender and cooked to perfection. The portions were not too large. There was just enough food to satisfy you, but not leave you stuffed, so there was room for dessert. For dessert we shared a lemon tart with sour cream sorbet and a chocolate ganache. I’m assuming the same pastry chef that made the bread, also made the desserts. The pastry chef is very talented. If i could, I would have licked both the plates! The presentations were all beautiful and the food is divine. The chef competed at the Bocuse d’Or Culinary Competition in 2007 in Lyon, France. Only one chef is chosen to represent the country at this premiere international cooking competition and it was chef Scott Jaeger, whom placed seventh. The Pear Tree Restaurant has won numerous accolades, including being on Maclean’s top 10 restaurant list in Canada for 2015 and Canada’s top 100 Restaurant list also for 2015. It has fallen off the list for 2016 and i don’t doubt it’s the rude front end staff that ruined it because the chef is certainly talented enough to achieve higher distinctions and this ranking loss is not his fault at all. To get a downtown core meal, but have it in the suburbs, The Pear Tree is a unique flavourful experience. It is open Tuesday-Sunday and open for dinner only. There is limited seating for 50 so reservations are a must. The wine list is extensive and you’re greeted with the wine display in the lounge at the entrance. Make sure you have a designated driver, hire a cab or book a limo to enjoy the wines. Parking is on East Hastings or a nearby lot, so leave a few minutes early to find parking and mind the parking restrictions on the street which are heavily enforced. The prices are not cheap, so save this restaurant for a special night out, and dress up and make a great night of it. It you encounter the rude waiter, order extra drinks in lieu of his tip and really make it an enjoyable night for yourself at his expense. Bon Appetit! MAY / JUNE 2016

Aprilia RSV4 R-FW (Factory Works)

P

lease hold while we wipe the drool off of our keyboard after having looked at photos of Aprilia’s made-to-order RSV4 R-FW (Factory Works) for the hundredth time. Based off of Aprilia’s phenomenal RSV4, but built by the Aprilia Racing Team and available in five packages that vary in terms of power and electronics, it’s likely that very few people will actually have the chance to ever throw a leg over one. I probably fall in that group of people who won’t, but would love to just get a few laps on one; again, not likely to happen. The Factory Works bike has 230 horsepower, which is more than many cars in today’s market, but this is only on two wheels. Regardless of which R-FW package you opt for (err, which option your wallet allows you to go with), Aprilia Racing will offer up technical training to, “provide the information needed to best adapt the model to the rider and track.” Even more, purchasing the bike through the R-FW program will grant you a test session on the track with Aprilia Racing’s “test team.”

2016 Cadillac ATS-V

W

hen I say that today’s Cadillacs aren’t the ones your grandfather used to drive, you better believe it. The brand is pitching more and more towards the younger market and with its V-lineup, it’s making quite an impact. Borrowing from the success of its older sibling, the CTS-V, the new ATS-V delivers quite the oomph, and is now focused at dethroning Germany’s top sport sedans. Powered by a 3.6L V6 that pumps out 464 hp, the ATS-V has 39 more ponies that the BMW M3. According to Cadillac, this Caddy will get to 60mph in under 4 seconds; that’s fast enough to get most enthusiasts’ hearts pumping. In addition to the enormous power, the ATS-V also has Magnetic Ride Control adaptive dampers, that provide excellent stability and composure during those hot laps. Standard equipment includes a carbon fibre hood, 18” wheels, Brembo brakes, sport suspension, adjustable driving modes, dual zone climate control and a bunch of other luxuries you’d expect. The ATS-V does compromise rear seating room and trunk space, but hey, this isn’t meant to be a true family sedan.

2017 Honda Ridgeline

I

for one am glad that Honda decided to rework the Ridgeline because it really didn’t fit into any category; it wasn’t a truck, SUV, or car. The 2017 model, on sale spring 2016, is now clearly a pickup. It looks much more conventional, with a longer, flatter hood, more aggressive front grille, and a flat-topped bed, as opposed to those impractical sloping sides. What’s really innovative, and a pickup truck first, is the new speaker system imbedded into the bed. You can now control audio, volume and other media modes right from your mobile device. How cool is that? The new Ridgeline still features a deep hidden cargo area in the bed that can be used for hauling your golf clubs, groceries, and even a full cooler. Power comes from a tweaked version of the Pilot’s 3.5L V6 and horsepower is rated at 300; Honda claims it will out-accelerate the competition, give great fuel economy, and pull more than 7000 pounds. The Ridgeline’s interior is familiar Honda environment, which really works. Welcome, Honda Ridgeline to the truck world – we’ve been expecting you. 24

2016 Audi TT Coupe

I

f you see the new Audi TT Coupe, you may be slightly disappointed because there’s so much resemblance to the last generation. But Audi believes that if it ain’t broke, why fix it? The new TT is much more streamlined, has a lower roofline, but still maintains the Bauhaus style, which I personally admire. The broader Singleframe grille creates a stronger, sportier face, complete with headlights that are inspired by the focused eye of an athlete. Overall, this new generation makes a bold first impression that the last TT didn’t. If not much has changed on the outside, the interior will be mesmerizing, especially the new virtual cockpit, which transforms the traditional analog gauges into a completely digital experience with full integration of all driver and vehicle systems. Under the hood, the light and powerful 2.0L TFSI engine produces 220 hp and 259 ft-lbs of torque, all of which go to the Quattro permanent drive system. According to Audi, the TT will get to 60mph in 5.6 seconds. I would opt for the S-line package that adds nice badging and styling cues.

race between the white, the dark and the stripe! I adored the red hen it comes to naked bikes, there aren’t wheels on the white, how stealth-like the dark gets to be and the many that really turn heads and be white stripe and the little screen on the stripe one. Naked bikes have appreciated. Ducati, a brand I am biased niche following and it’s because these bikes are neither towards, has one of the best cruisers nor true sport bikes. But the Monster 821 naked bikes around and now, forgoes all preconceived notions and is a hit amongst the Monster family is enlarged by the introduction of all riders. During my short time with the bike, I noticed two new versions: the Monster 821 series and Monster 1200 series, which sharpens the sports character of people taking notice of the bike. Yep, it definitely has curb appeal. Ducati’s world-renowned naked bikes even further. The world premiere of the Ducati Monster at The huge fuel tank is excellent, and practical for those long rides, and I like the way the instruments the 1992 Cologne Motor Show introduced the first motorcycle to harmonize simple features of essential and handlebars sit lower than the tank itself. Seating position may not look very comfortable but don’t judge design. More than a motorcycle, the Monster was before you ride the bike. It’s actually quite comfortable destined to become a style icon, minimalistic and and with its semi-upright position, I didn’t get tired essential. Ducati continues the evolution of the family, during the rides. Another point is that some people of with the latest generation of the model. short stature, including yours truly, may have a slightly The Ducati Monster 821 has a present look. The Anuraag J Singh hard time because the seat is higher than you’d expect. headlight is modern, discrete, the parking lights are I had seen numerous clasps of the Ducati Monster LED and overall, the bike is just gorgeous. Would I 821 on the web and thought the bike looked stunning, yet the sound change anything on this bike? Yes, possibly shorter LED pointers of it was going to be a disappointment. But how could this be? and I would run with the shorter discretionary plate holder, as the Ducati has one of the best stock sounds on any motorcycle and back itself is simple and pretty. All of this and, well, everything you can see, makes the Ducati Monster 821 truly engaging. how could the 821 disappoint? When I fired up the Monster, all hesitations were put away – there’s motorcycle exhaust and then It would be difficult to pick one version. To me, it would be a 26

there’s Ducati exhaust. It is stunning, and again, truly, one of the best sounding stock exhausts I’ve ever heard on a bike! The Ducati Monster 821 is made for riding, period. Whether just around town or on the windy roads to Whistler, it’s easy to unleash the potential power of the bike and truly enjoy the essence of the bike! I honestly was not a fan of the older Ducati bikes because they seemed more suited for a super sport rider on a track. But the tubular chassis on this bike is great and the bike is comfortable. The 821 is comfortable for the passenger as well. The Ducati Monster 821 is anything but difficult to ride, despite the fact that I would prescribe to set it to Touring or even Urban mode, in case you’re a less experienced rider. The bike’s behavior is completely different on each mode: Sport, Touring and Urban. Ride-by-wire technology controls the power delivery differently on each setting and both Traction Control and ABS get distinctive levels. The Ducati Monster 821 has an 821cc Testastretta twin, which is truly amazing! It develops 112hp and 89,4Nm. The Sport mode releases all the power and you can feel it through the entire range. If I’m to be honest, Touring mode must be the better balanced option, because it delivers the 112hp power much more progressively through all the range. The Urban mode limits the bike to just 75hp, which might be great for rainy conditions and less experienced riders! Otherwise, it is too boring!

You can set these parameters with the instrumentation, using the buttons on the left grip to set the bike, just as you want. ABS and Traction Control are set by the selected riding mode, or you can select its level as you want. The LCD gives you all the data, such as engine temperature, ambient temperature, average fuel consumption…etc.! By the way, that 6.7L/100km is due to sporty riding and shooting activity. The 821 has 2 x 320mm discs, but also 4 piston calipers. That is a lot of braking power! Also, the rear tire has a width/height ratio just as the Supersport competition bikes, 180/60, offering a larger contact area and providing more traction and stability. It also improves handling and comfort. The Monster 821 accompanies loads of equipment as standard, especially the electronics and technology. In addition to the Riding Modes, there’s the Ducati Safety Pack, multi-alignment ABS, Ducati Traction Control, and adjustable seat height. The Ducati Monster 821 Dark is priced at $11,995, which is the most minimal cost for the Monster 821 territory. The Red is $12,695, the Star White Silk is $12,895 and the Stripe is $13,495 (all CDN dollars). As I see it, the Monster 821 is justified regardless of the cash, considering that you get Ducati quality and build. You really can’t go wrong with a Ducati, and the 821 sets a high bar for naked bikes. MAY / JUNE 2016

Vancouver International Auto Show

V

ancouver, B.C. – The 96th annual Vancouver International Auto Show drew 101,853 attendees in 2016, an increase of almost 5,000 attendees from the record setting 2015 numbers. This attendance comes despite venue timing conflicts resulting in the show being one day shorter in 2016. “We weren’t sure how attendance would be affected by the loss of a full day of the show as well as the timing of the event happening over Easter weekend and Spring Break for many school districts,” says executive director Jason Heard, “but once again British Columbians showed that this event is the ultimate place to see, learn about and celebrate new vehicles.” Single day attendance was extremely high, with Friday, March 25th setting a new single day record for attendance at 27,155 people. Already the best attended consumer show in Western Canada, the Vancouver Auto Show is also one of the most highly anticipated auto events in the country. “Over the past two years the Vancouver show has developed a significant momentum, drawing international attention from media, exhibitors such as the NOS Energy DUB Show Tour (which selected the Vancouver Auto Show as the location of its Canadian debut) and the Chinese Auto Manufacturers Association, which sent a delegation to see the Vancouver show firsthand,” says Heard. “We are changing the definition of auto show to reflect British Columbia’s love affair of everything from classic cars to hyper-luxury vehicles to family commuter vehicles. We are once again planning to expand the show in 2017 with the debut of a global conference on all things auto, which we plan to unveil in the coming months.” The show, which ran from March 23-27 at the Vancouver Convention Centre, assembled top manufacturers from around the globe showcasing 400 new vehicles – from luxury and exotic showstoppers to the latest in family and eco friendly offerings.

My Personal Build - 2006 Nissan 350Z

2006 Nissan 350Z

T

his year I decided to build another car. I figured it was time to build something thorough again, but not take the approach I see a lot of other automotive enthusiasts do. What happens too often is that people undertake a project and try to “reinvent the wheel”. As a result, a lot of project vehicles become way too heavily modified and end up either going way over budget and time, out of commission at a shop waiting for completion, or become very obnoxious to drive-- all for the sake of having the bragging rights for a vehicle’s theoretical performance potential. How do I know this? I’m just as guilty of this with another vehicle (8 years and counting). So now I set out to build a car for $20,000 (including the cost of acquiring the vehicle) that I could take up the mountain pass, drive uphill swiftly, as well as handle corners with confidence; a car I can take to the auto cross to have some fun, drive 5 hours straight on the highway or be stuck in rush-hour traffic and have no reliability issues—at the same time looking good while doing it all! This time I went with something that is a great all-round vehicle. It’s quick, handles and brakes well, is entertaining to drive, has amenities like a sound system, and is still stylish by modern standards. Enter the 2006 Nissan 350Z 6-speed -- an amazing bargain for style and performance, not to mention parts that are reasonably priced. And it is reliable. My thinking behind the car was, Nissan engineers pretty much had it right from the beginning. So there’s no point in messing with the factory settings until I reach the car’s potential first. What I did focus on were typical shortcomings in the manufacturing process. Vehicles are manufactured to fit a wide range of public wants and the need to turn a profit. So I changed foundation parts in the suspension like rubber bushings to polyurethane. This is a cheap thing to do but allows the existing parts to be more effective. The car already has forged aluminum suspension parts and a carbon fiber driveshaft. It was just a matter of changing out some worn service parts to really wake up the chassis. Bracing was added for rigidity and chassis responsiveness. A more aggressive-sounding, 3-inch stainless steel exhaust system was installed to give it more of a sports car sound and a more stylish look. Other additions included basic bolt-ons under the hood for performance and added reliability like a K&N replacement air filter and oil filter, intake mods, and a larger oil pan. I upgraded all the electrical grounds and added a second battery. Further down the road, I’ll be adding Bilstein dampeners but won’t lower the car as I don’t want to mess with 32

My Personal Build - 2006 Nissan 350Z the factory geometry which will be expensive to re-establish (due to the addition of more parts) if the car is lowered. Another big thing for me is how I interact with the vehicle. As the owner, “driver feel” is the most important thing because this is the part of the car I experience and enjoy the most. Don’t get me wrong, I spend a lot of time figuring out the style of my car, but I can’t see it while I’m driving. From the factory, driving position is spot on and the pedals are situated nicely for heel/ toe down shifts. I had all the hydraulic flex lines replaced with stainless steel braided versions to make sure pedal feel is always firm. A short throw shifter with stainless bushings and built-in bearings resulted in smooth positive shifts. Here I’ll mention the exhaust again because listening to the exhaust while feeling the car adds to the experience. Over all, I would rather have this 300 hp car over the newer 400500 horsepower sports vehicles with automatics because they take less skill to drive properly and smoothly. I think that part is lost on a lot of consumers. Many “enthusiasts” are more concerned with how fast their ¼ mile time is (even though they never go to the drag strip) or how much power the car has (although one can’t use it on the street to its full potential) nor do they mind how “numb” some of these cars are becoming. Style and entertainment are considerations that can’t be overlooked. The late Body Coddington stated “Wheels are the focal point of the car,” and he’s right. The wheels you choose will set the tone for the theme of your vehicle and can make or break your presentation. I decided to go with Vossen CV7 19-inch wheels for a sophisticated sports car look. Other things like colour scheme (vinyl wrapping the roof black), adding a subtle spoiler to the back and a front lip all help make the car look lower and sleeker. LED lighting was also upgraded outside for style and safety. For entertainment,

I installed the latest Alpine Electronics navigation screen with an Alpine 5 channel PDX amplifier, Hertz Audio Speakers and a JL Audio subwoofer in a custom enclosure. The sub comes out with quick disconnects and reveals a fully functional spare underneath. The sound system with sound deadening probably weighs in at a grand total of 70 pounds – a small price to pay in weight for better sound. I also custom-fabricated a bezel that houses Greddy’s Infometer Touch in the storage pocket above the head unit, giving me additional valuable engine-operation information. For security I installed a Viper security and remote-start unit that allows me to control everything in the car, including the windows, using a remote or my cell phone. By choosing an older solid platform, updating a few parts, focusing on the entertainment aspect of driving and adding some style mods, I now have a vehicle that is a great performer, is reliable and can turn heads either on the street or when parked – all for about 20 grand! Note: You can watch progress updates of this vehicle on my Youtube channel: AnthonyJ350.

You are well prepared and equipped for that long journey, or at least you think you are. You are aware of the possibility that you may come across a few roadblocks along the way. It could be something big such as: an inspections officer, border patrol, engine blowout, a tire requiring attention, or maybe some unexpected delay on your commute. What about making sure your eyes and vision are ready for the long journey ahead? Above all else your visual system is most important in ensuring your safety and success in completing your trip. So making sure your eyes remain comfortable and healthy should also be part of the preparation checklist. Imagine you are sitting in your temperature-regulated cabin with your seat buckle strapped and your favorite music playing. As you are listening to the CB radio in the background, and gazing miles ahead on the straight and narrow highway to your destination, you begin to have some visual troubles. You recall that this isn’t your first encounter of gritty irritation in the eyes. You are trying to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles on the road, but that nagging burning sensation will not quit. Now the eyes have become very watery and the vision has started to fluctuate. You rub the eyes and wipe away the excess tears. This starts to concern you. You glance into the mirror for a moment and notice your eyes are also extremely red. What seems to be the matter? The scenario and symptoms that I’ve described here are common

ones for folks who are in a ventilated environment for many hours of the day. The air conditioning, heating, or a cracked window will cause the eyes and skin to become very dry. The symptoms of dry eye will usually be a combination of any of the following: gritty sensation, red eyes, reflexive tearing of the eyes, burning sensation, feeling of an eyelash in the eyes, or a sharp pain in the eye. It is also common for those who are focusing on a particular object for many hours a day (in this instance, gazing down the road) to have aggravated symptoms. The extended time of focus usually means that the eyelids are open and blinking less often, therefore, the tears in the eyes evaporate and cause a dry eye surface. UV exposure is a big component to these symptoms as UV light can cause inflammation, dry eye, and tissue damage from long hours in the sun (especially without sunglasses). Being sleep deprived, consuming excess amounts of caffeine, and lower water consumption on a longer haul will add to the physical dehydration of the body and the eyes. Fear not, this small speed bump on your journey can be tamed. Some advise I can offer is to always keep these factors controlled and on mind. Ensure you are drinking adequate amounts of water (5-8 cups of water a day). Try to limit the amount of tea or coffee you drink in the day to 1 or 2 cups a day. Not large mugs, but cups (250ml). Always protect your skin and your eyes from the sun. Have a good pair of UV protecting sunglasses with you in the truck at all times and try to wear some sunscreen. Limit the intensity of the ventilation. Try not to have the AC or heat blasted on high. I recommend reducing the fan speed a little, and having a moderate, yet comfortable temperature. Make sure to take frequent breaks from the extended journey. This will allow your natural blink rate to return to a higher speed and provide an even distribution of tears to the eyes. Have a bottle of artificial tear eye drops with you for those instances when the eyes require extra lubrication. Just like hinges and engine parts, the eyes do need to be greased up from time to time. There are many different kinds of eye drops on the market. Stay away from the Visine products. You may also see an optometrist that can offer a customized recommendation for your particular eye needs. On some occasions, those red eyes or painful eyes may also be a result of more serious infections of inflammatory conditions. Those will need attention from an eye doctor. They will prescribe medicated eye drops if needed to resolve the issue. If symptoms don’t resolve from the simple methods we have discussed, then make sure to get the eyes overhauled by an eye doctor sooner than later. Good luck on the journey!

n today’s vast new vehicle marketplace, most of the automotive superheroes are easy to pick out, wearing sleek and often impractical styling around impressive powertrains and capable chassis. But as anyone who reads comic books knows, superheroes come in a variety of forms, and you’ll find all the proof you need of that in the car you’re reading about here, the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R.

MAY / JUNE 2016

This is the second generation of the quickest version of VW’s Golf hatchback, which builds on the performance legacy of the venerable GTI. To that car’s proven hot-hatch formula the Golf R adds nearly 50 percent more horsepower and allwheel drive to create what we think is the most livable and daily driving-friendly sports car on sale today. From a 2.0L turbocharged fourcylinder engine, VW extracts 292 horsepower (that’s 72 more than in the most potent version of the GTI) and 280 lb-ft of torque. Numbers like those are

not uncommon in many family sedans but they still impress here -- even on paper -- because you can sense that these are friskier ponies than those under the hood of, say, a Chrysler 200 or Honda Accord. The engine’s generous torque (all of it is available at 2,000 rpm) makes this car impressively quick from a stop, but it also means that you get meaningful acceleration even at highway speeds without the need for a downshift. With this much power under your right foot, we’d argue that all-wheel drive is practically a necessity for putting it to the pavement efficiently. A spin around Ottawa’s Calobogie Motorsports Park’s racetrack at the Golf R press launch in September 2015 proved that this car’s four driven wheels allow a skilled driver (in this case, Canadian racer Patrick Carpentier) to pulls stunts like drifting the car through corners at speeds most of the rest of the drivers at that event were too timid to attempt. That event proved the Golf R is quite comfortable being flogged around a racetrack, but Volkswagen insists this is not a track car. Rather, it’s an allrounder designed to be capable on the track but also comfortable as a daily driver. Fast forward to our winter test drive, during which we were indeed comfortable with the Golf R’s four-wheel traction in the aftermath of a significant January snowfall. Any AWD vehicle can be a competent companion in foul weather, but there’s something particularly intoxicating about the way an all-wheel drive sports car handles the snow. Another of the Golf R’s more intoxicating characteristics is its availability with a six-speed manual transmission. It was the only gearbox available in the last-generation version of this car, so it’s a sign of the times that Volkswagen offers this new one with a dual-clutch six-speed automatic, which the automaker dubs DSG. Our tester had the stickshift, and it’s a lovely piece of machinery to use. The shifter moves effortlessly through its gates, and the fluid clutch is so easy to modulate that this would be a brilliant

2016 Volkswagen Golf R

car on which to learn to drive a manual transmission. Its six ratios are reasonably well-spaced, with a very tall sixth gear to keep engine speed and noise down in highway cruising. All that said, having had the chance to drive manual and automatic versions back-to-back at Calabogie, we’d strongly suggest against writing off the automatic version as unworthy of its performance car title. In fact, while we would probably choose the manual simply because we prefer driving that way, the DSG is a better performance partner with its lightning-quick gearchanges and the ability to perform flawless rev-matched downshifts every time when shifted manually, which can be done via the shift lever or steering wheel-mounted paddles. No matter which transmission you choose, Golf R comes with four drive modes -- comfort, normal, sport and race -- to alter throttle response and suspension firmness and, in DSG cars, transmission behaviour. The comfort setting proved just comfortable enough on Ottawa’s winter-ravaged pavement and normal was just tolerable, but sport and race modes are best reserved for smooth roads. Inside, the Golf R presents front sport seats with aggressive bolstering which, for some drivers, might be one of the car’s few compromises: they’re perfectly supportive for slim people who fit neatly between the bolsters, but those wider in the hips will find them uncomfortable. You also have to be willing to hump over the big bolsters every time you get in and out of the car, which may be a real demerit against this car’s daily driver potential. On the upside, the rest of the interior is more or less the same as that in any Golf or GTI model: there’s a roomy back seat and a big trunk that make this a quick way for four adults -- or two adults and a couple of kids -- to get around or get out of town. If you’ve driven a recent GTI, you’ll know that it too is a strong performer, and that fact raises the most pertinent questions about the Golf R’s value as a performance car. A GTI with the optional performance package has 220 horsepower, a locking differential and weighs more than 100 kg less than the Golf R while sharing the R’s excellent brakes and sticky tires. So, while the R is still quicker, at least some of its 72-hp advantage is lost to its heftier weight. On the upside, that weight is arguably better distributed considering the extra kilograms are owing to the AWD system and the hardware it adds to the car’s rear end. Then it comes time to consider the Golf R’s starting price of $39,995. That’s just $1,900 more than a GTI with that aforementioned performance package, which is a reasonable fee for a bunch of extra power and four-wheel traction. As superheroes go, the Golf R’s uniform may be less showy than most, but this hot hatch still has what it takes to save you from a boring daily drive. MAY / JUNE 2016

he number of women in the automotive industry is growing rapidly more so then ever before. Studies have shown that 40% of female car buyers prefer to deal with female dealers and stats will show that 45% of car buyers are now women compared to 10 years ago it was only 19.5%. In Canada 27% of the automotive labour force is women. Once only holding positions at the reception desk, assembly lines and administrative positions, we are now seeing many in sales, management and top positions such as General Managers and CEOs. This is my 5th year in this industry and in such a short period of time, I have had the opportunity to see so many roles changing. The industry was once looked at as a barrier for women, as at times the “work-life balance” can be a struggle; but those times are proving to be a thing of the past. I came into this industry (and ended up falling in love with it) simply by chance. I started in 2011 – I had, at the time, I had a 19-month old daughter and was simply looking to get out of the house. I wanted to find a simple part time job that would allow me to keep up my skills in the work force, but wouldn’t prevent me from being a mother. At last, a part time opportunity as a receptionist came up at a brand new OpenRoad dealership. With no dealership experience but an

Women In The Industry extensive administrative back ground, they took a chance on me – and I took a chance on them. My simple part time job was very short lived. Within a few months I went full time. I had absolutely fallen in love with the atmosphere and the ability to really create my own career. The OpenRoad Auto Group has a well-known reputation for promoting from within and thankfully, I was hired by a GM that not only spotted my potential, but also gave me the push I needed and embraced my eagerness to learn more. From learning the front end of the business, I then was able to learn the financial services side. I later began to sell cars. Learning how to listen to customers and find exactly what they were looking for was such a confidence booster. Yet, I wanted to learn more. Learning both sides of the automotive industry was very important to me, so when an opportunity came up to become a service advisor I jumped at the chance. This gave me much more stability at home, over selling, yet still gave me the opportunity to work with customers (which is my passion). In just a little over a year, I was promoted to Assistant Service Manager. Having a mentor to encourage and expect the best from you creates a drive and an expectation in yourself. Currently, I have been promoted to Business Development Manager, which allows me to work both sides of the business, sales and service, as a whole: creating new business and discovering new ways to retain the business we have worked so hard to attain. As a woman and mother, this industry has given me an absolute passion for what I do. There are so many growing opportunities for women that one can balance a work-life career. Nowadays, more than ever, there are opportunities to choose a career in the auto industry that weren’t possible, or probably, before.
