DRK Editorial

Editor’s Note

Life isn’t a matter of milestones, but of moments.

W

e all celebrate milestones because they represent important achievements for individuals. From our team at DRK Magazine, we wanted to share two milestones with you, our readers and supporters. First, we celebrate one successful year of DRK Magazine – this May/June 2015 issue marks the beginning of our second year in print and online content. Second, we wanted to celebrate the launch of our new www.rackandopinion.ca site, which features news, reviews, and interesting articles related to anything cars and motorcycles. If you haven’t done so yet, make sure you visit www.rackandopinion.ca today. The New Car Dealers Association of BC put on a spectacular 2015 Vancouver International Auto Show in March. With over 25% additional floor space, on two levels, the 98, 000+ attendees had lots to look at and take in. One of the highlights for me was the custom 1963 Jag Dhatt Lincoln Continental Roadster, valued at over $1 million. The team at 360 Fabrication, located in Abbotsford BC, took over a year and half Editor-in-Chief to complete the project, and let me tell you, photos do not do the car true justice. In this issue of DRK Magazine, we test drive the new Porsche Cayman GTS, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, Harley Street 750, and the built-for Canada only Nissan Micra. What can we say about the New Cayman GTS except that it’s utterly amazing. The Wrangler Unlimited is no longer limited to the outdoorsman as its four-doors and available options now make this a viable family vehicle. The Nissan Micra is truly small on budget but big on value. Finally, Harley is now looking to compete with the Japanese brands by launching its entry level Street 750. Read all of these featured articles in this issue. We are pleased to welcome Anthony Jarantilla as a free-lance writer to DRK Magazine. Anthony brings years of experience as a custom audio/video, electronics, security, etc. installer. Look forward to Anthony’s articles in future issues as well. As we look forward to warmer weather in May and June, we remind everyone to watch for motorcyclists. Remember to share the road and be a responsible driver; let’s remember the moments and be able to celebrate milestones. otosel Industrial Group, a 30-year old company is expanding in the Great Vancouver area. Having established itself as a worldwide flexible manufacturer of high quality industrial products, the company offers some great products for passenger cars, heavy-duty vehicles, and industry. According to independent testing, Motosel motor oils seem to compete well with other known worldwide brands, such as Pennzoil and Amsoil. Aeromobil’s Flying Car Will Go on Sale in 2017 Ever wanted to buy a flying car? You only have a couple more years to wait, says a company that has built prototypes that can both drive and fly.

The flying roadster, a sporty two seater that transforms into a light sports aircraft, aims to go on sale in just two years from Slovakia-based Aeromobil.

“We believe that 2017 we’ll be able to launch this to market,” said company cofounder and CEO Juraj Vaculik at a presentation at the South By Southwest Interactive conference in Austin Sunday. The limited edition vehicle targeted at “wealthy supercar buyers and flight enthusiasts” will have a flying range of almost 700 kilometres on regular gasoline, Vaculik said. It is equipped with partial autopilot and a parachute that will automatically deploy if the pilot falls ill. “Nobody has to jump out,” he said. He said pricing has not been set, but will be in the range of hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars. Next, the company is already planning a flying car for the masses — one that is fully autonomous, self-driving and self-flying.

He envisions it as being both for private and shared usage. “If something like a flying Uber and flying Lyft will be on the market, I think many users will find this a very efficient way to move,” he said. Vaculik says flying cars would be ideal for trips of up to about 640 kilometres where travel time to and from the airport, along with security checks, can currently double travel times by air. They might also be useful for getting to places that aren’t connected by road and could reduce the need for expensive roads in the future, he added. Finally, they could reduce traffic congestion, since cars could be spread out in different “layers” of airspace. Vaculik expects the flying cars to stay below an altitude of three kilometres. Motorcycle Chase Through Busy Surrey Mall Captured in Dramatic Police Video

A

dramatic video showing police chasing a motorcyclist through a Vancouver-area mall is going viral on YouTube. The video shot on Feb. 20 cuts between police footage taken by a helicopter and a cruiser, as well as surveillance video from inside Guildford Town Centre in Surrey, B.C. The motorcyclist can be seen speeding through the streets of Surrey before entering the mall, hurtling down an escalator and through a set of sliding doors, forcing people to dodge out of the way. Helicopter video shows the motorcyclist leaving the mall and riding across a pedestrian overpass, and the video ends with a close-up of the bike’s Hells Angels stickers. Surrey RCMP put out a news release at the time about a reckless motorcyclist who had reportedly driven through a mall, and they described him as a white male in his 40s. Mounties say they are looking into how the video was posted on Friday to video-sharing sites LiveLeak and YouTube, where it has been viewed tens of thousands of times. Sgt. Bill Parmar says the incident began on Feb. 20 at about 1:30 p.m. when RCMP received calls from a nearby detachment about a motorcyclist driving in a reckless manner and heading into Surrey. He says an officer followed the motorcyclist into the Guildford Town Centre parking lot and chased him on foot when he entered the mall. As the biker rode southeast toward Langley at a high speed, RCMP decided to call off the chase to avoid further danger to the public, Parmar says. “The vehicle was driving in such a dangerous manner that the duty officer of the day made a decision to back off the police units,” he says, adding that air units were still used. A motorcycle matching the description was later found abandoned in a wooded area near Langley. The motorcycle had earlier been reported stolen in Nanaimo, B.C., Parmar adds. RCMP have not found the suspect and the investigation is ongoing. Parmar adds he has been with the force for 19 years and has never seen anything like this. “It’s very unusual,” he says. “Part of the investigation is determining why the person on the motorcycle was driving in the dangerous manner that he was.” 8

Apple CarPlay: Soon To Be Installed In Every Car

A

pple fans, rejoice: soon, your next car could come with an infotainment system designed by your beloved brand. The company’s CEO Tim Cook says up to forty different models will introduce Apple’s new car infotainment system this year. Cook also says the technology will be available on every model in the near future. “Now every major car brand has committed to delivering CarPlay,” Cook said at an Apple event on Monday where he also announced the release of the Apple Watch and upgraded MacBook. Unfortunately he didn’t specify which manufacturers have committed but if indeed forty different 2016 models will be shipping with it by the end of the year, the details won’t be far behind. Currently only Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz offer Apple CarPlay. Volvo is putting it in the new XC-90 as well. The move will be a welcomed departure from the myriad of often frustrating car infotainment systems we have today.

Automotive Sales Professionals in Demand

T

he label of a “car salesperson” is on the way out, being now replaced by Automotive Sales Executive. According to Jeremy Schaab, General Manager of Lexus Richmond, there are some great opportunities for the right person to have a successful career in the automotive field, in a variety of positions. Schaab says that companies like the Open Road Auto Group are looking for career-oriented people who want to stay with the company for a long time: “We are willing to invest in people who see the Open Road Auto Group as a company they would work with for many years.” Like the Open Road Auto Group, other companies are now beginning to invest in the proper training of their employees, to increase retention numbers. “We at Open Road Lexus, and the Open Road Group overall, have a very high retention rate with respect to employees,” says Schaab. “Many of our Sales Executives have the opportunity to become Sales Managers,” continued Schaab, “and they make a pretty good salary.” So, if you are passionate about vehicles and like a dynamic atmosphere, an Automotive Sales Executive position may be right for you.

Volvo Cars celebrates 25th anniversary of the integrated booster cushion

V

olvo Cars is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the first ever integrated booster cushion in conjunction with the United Nations Global Road Safety Week (May 4-10). Back in 1978 Volvo Cars developed the very first cushion for children in cars. In 1990 the Swedish car maker took child safety to a new dimension with the development of the first integrated booster cushion. The first integrated booster cushion was actually a redesigned centre armrest that was developed to safely elevate the seating position of the child so that the existing central 3-point safety belt could be used to best effect. This removed the need for accessory child restraints for older children and also increased their comfort. The clear benefit of the integrated design also means that the cushion is always available and the potential for misuse is minimized. Few car makers offer integrated booster cushions for children to this day. “The introduction of the first integrated booster cushion for improved child safety in 1990 was a huge step forward for child safety. One of the key benefits of integrated booster cushions is that it is developed as a part of the seat and the safety belt is in more direct contact with the child’s body, removing the possibility of ‘slack’ in the belt that could be associated with accessory booster cushions/seats or child seats,” said Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Leader at Volvo Cars Safety Centre. Volvo Cars achieved yet another world first in child safety when they added the integrated two-stage booster cushion in 2007,

enabling adjustment between two settings for the safest and most comfortable seating position for children of varying height. Apart from the obvious benefit of increased safety and comfort, the integrated cushion also provides a better seating position for the child, allowing them to look out the windows. This has the effect of making children less prone to boredom and agitation, which can also negatively affect the driver’s experience and concentration abilities. In the lower of the two positions the seat is suitable for larger children. “The beauty of the integrated two-stage booster cushion is that it is always available and does not detract from normal adult usage of the seats. It means in effect that the rear seat is suitable for all but small children who should always be placed in a rearward facing child seat until the age of four. This increased safety and flexibility makes the integrated booster cushion a perfect solution. Unfortunately, not many car makers are offering such solutions at present. At Volvo Cars we believe that car makers should take the responsibility for developing child safety systems as a part of vehicle development to ensure the best performance. Children are our future – and we feel strongly that they should be given the best when it comes to safety. ” concluded Lotta Jakobsson. Since 2008 Volvo Cars has communicated the vision that by 2020 no one should be seriously injured or killed while driving a new Volvo car. The longer term goal is to design cars that will not crash.

May / June 2015

or most people, there are certain vehicles that just define the epitome of perfection: whether it’s a classic car or a new model, each of us has a vehicle that just makes us go “wow”! It doesn’t depend on how deep your pockets, but more-so the emotions that it invokes in us at a certain time. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you’ll know that the 1987 Buick Grand National GNX is one of my most favourite vehicles – domestic of course. But if not restricted to North American brands, then Porsche is one of my all-time favourites, regardless of price. I don’t know if it’s the purr of the engine, the perfection in balance, or just the emblem itself on the front of the car – Porsche oozes elegance and performance. Recently, when I was given the opportunity to drive the new 2015 Cayman GTS, let’s just say that Porsche didn’t have to twist my arm to get behind the wheel for a few days. The Porsche Cayman was first launched in 2006, and for most, it was pretty much a Boxster sans la roof. Porsche had hoped that the entry Cayman would be a nice fit between the Boxster and the 911 – well, I think the attempt was not all successful. The original Cayman wasn’t really appealing in its design, and I’m not the only one who shared this sentiment. Most people, well men, I spoke with thought the original Cayman was more of a “female” car: we’re not saying it was an ugly car, but just that it lacked the aggressive look of a Porsche. Now, enter the new Cayman GTS and be prepared to be blown away completely, literally and figuratively. In terms of sheer looks, the new 2015 Cayman GTS is absolutely gorgeous – the front end is similar to the 911, but has its own characteristic lines. A new fascia at the front and rear, larger body overall, and slight modifications to the curves, give the car a very svelte look. I really like the low nose and the crisp lines; this is no longer a “girly” car. In fact, while stopped at a red light on 152nd in Surrey, a fellow Porsche driver (he had an older 911), pulled up beside me, rolled down his windows and complimented the look of the new Cayman. His exact words were, “Man, they finally made the Cayman look nice. Nice car you have!” Who was I to tell him that it wasn’t really my car, right? Yep, the new Cayman is definitely eye candy.

2015 Porsche Cayman GTS

Step inside the vehicle and you’ll notice the exterior elegance carries forth. The instrument and dash, complete with a large tach, are clearly driver oriented. The digital portion of the cluster is beautifully interlaced with the analog portion. Drivers have the ability to toggle between various screens, from mileage and fuel economy to maximum G-forces. When you have a car the monitors G-forces, you know you have a serious driving machine. The seats are beautiful, comfortable, and provide exceptional support, especially when you’re pulling some serious G-forces! The heart of the Cayman GTS is its 3.4 liter flat-six engine. Naturally aspirated, this motor puts out 340 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, which is way above the Cayman S, and only slightly below its bigger brother, the 911 Carrera. The Cayman GTS manages runs to 60 in around 4.5 seconds, if equipped with the PDK. My tester came with the standard 6-speed manual – I’d be torn between the manual and PDK because both are just spectacular. Now, let’s get to the fun part, driving the new Cayman GTS. Last year I drove the 911 C4S and I found it to be an amazing car. But in all honesty, I like the Cayman GTS a lot better. This could be Porsche’s best car. The midengine design makes weight distribution perfect, and who knows this better than the engineers at Porsche. On some secluded roads in the Fraser Valley, I was able to throw the car into corners. With both hands on the steering wheel, I was tempted to push the Cayman even further,

but thought I’d save it for the track. Steering is crisp and refined; prior to driving the Jaguar F-Type Coupe and Cayman GTS, I was not completed sold on electric steering; thanks to Porsche, I’m now a believer and convert. Feedback from the car is so precise that as a driver, I was completed connected to the car – almost like Neo when he was plugged into the Matrix. The manual gearbox is effortless, with the gears just falling into place as soon as you depress the clutch. This car loves to be driven. Then there’s something about the sound of the midengine that’s’ music to the ears…it’s almost intoxicating. As it should be, the Porsche cabin is loud when in Sport Mode, so Bluetooth calls aren’t clear, but who would want to be making calls when driving this car? So the question will arise, why buy the Cayman GTS over the S? Well, it’s more than just the GTS badging itself. The performance upgrades, modifications in styling cues and accents, and upgraded wheels are alone worth more than the GTS package – yes, if you were to price out the upgrades, it’s about $5k more than the stock GTS package. And consider this, with only 10 less hp, you’re getting a vehicle that is very similar to the 911 Carrera, which costs $10K more. The 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS is an incredible vehicle. You can drive it on a daily basis, or to get your speed rush, strap on a helmet and head to the track, where it feels at home. I loved driving the Porsche, but hated the fact that I had to keep it under the limit. May / June 2015

MB - Langley Going Strong

‘‘

J

ust over a year ago, I was invited to perhaps one of the best automotive launch parties in the Fraser Valley area. There had been great buzz about the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Langley dealership, owned by the Dilawri Group of Companies. As VIP guests to this gala event, we were awed by the grandiosity of the event: all three Dilwari brothers were present, who mingled with the crowd. Emcee Zack Spencer gave his insights of the history and prestige of the Mercedes-Benz brand and Matt Dusk wowed the crowd with his Sinatra-like voice. Today, Mercedes-Benz Langley has proven itself to be the premier Mercedes-Benz dealership for Surrey and the Fraser Valley areas. At the helm of the dealership are Dean Rideout (General Manager), Rahim Jamal (Sales Manager), and Stuart Goodman (Sales Manager). I spoke with Rahim and asked him about the steps taken by the dealership to not only grow in sales, but gain a large following for their service center. “It’s simple, really. Our priority is to listen to our customers’ needs and then devote our energy to find the right product or service based on those needs,” says Rahim. “If we follow this simple principle, then not only have we made our customers happy, we’ve hopefully made them a customer of MercedesBenz Langley for life.” Rahim emphasized that although Mercedes-Benz is their main brand, they also have a great pre-owned division as well. “We have various brands in our pre-owned section in addition to Mercedes and we will find the perfect vehicle for our customer.” Mercedes-Benz Langley is also home to the Sprinter and Smart Automobile divisions, and thus, pretty much a one-stop location for all your vehicle needs. During my visit, the dealership was home to the first Sprinter 4x4 Van, which will be on display at various locations throughout Canada. Rahim joked, “In the Sprinter 4x4, if you’re a contractor, you’ll never be able to use the excuse that the weather is too bad because this Sprinter will go anywhere at any time.” As I walked around the dealership, I couldn’t help but admire the sheer size of the facility. What was more amazing is that on this Saturday, the dealership was buzzing with clients, which is a sure sign that the dealership has established itself as the premier Mercedes-Benz dealership in Surrey and the Fraser Valley.

Street 750 rounded off giving it a typical cruiser stance with a stretched rake-angle. The Street 750 surprised us in the handling department as well. We expected the stability but what came as a pleasant surprise was its ability around corners. The increased ride height and resulting increase in ground clearance allows for fairly spirited cornering. And the low centre of gravity brought about from the shorter engine and overall low slung chassis mean that it’s stable and neutral in feel. hat do you associate a Harley-Davidson with? Strong brand identity, potato-potato sound, heavyweight motorcycles that have the ability to cruise endlessly, and high sticker price. But now you have to get used to a Harley that is small, doesn’t sound like one, and is ‘affordable’. Is that good news? The Harley Street 750 is built to attract new owners, both at home and abroad, who were probably raised on Asian motorcycles, to the Harley family. The style and finish of the Street 750 is pure Harley-Davidson and is done right. The buyer in the market for a reasonably priced, middleweight cruiser is no longer limited to an imported copy of Harley style; they can have the real thing. It took Harley 13 years to introduce an all-new engine and this one is completely different from the ones that power the rest of the lineup. Its Revolution X is a completely new 749cc 60-degree V-twin, liquid-cooled engine that makes 60 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm and redlines at 8000 rpm. HarleyDavidson traditionally does not disclose power figures but some magazines have tested the twin at around 52 PS at the wheel which is quite impressive. It uses chain driven single over-head cams with 18

DISCRETIONARY SHARES

Ryan Sahota BBA, CPA, CA

W

hile many of my clients are shareholders in their own large private companies or are a part of complex corporate structures, I also deal with local entrepreneurs and new start-ups. Recently a client of mine who was a sole proprietor had decided to make the jump and fully incorporate her company. I mentioned to her that when consulting with her lawyer she should consider the usage of discretionary shares in separate share classes. Naturally, she questioned me as to why she would consider using this tool in her company as this would involve more work with her lawyer. I informed her that through the use of discretionary shares she could legally income split revenues earned within the company to her husband at varying amounts each year de-

pending on how each of their personal tax returns looked. Essentially, discretionary shares allow a corporation to pay varying amounts of dividends to the holders of one share class without having to pay dividends to holders of another share class. It is as the “discretion” or choice of the company to whom the dividends are paid to. This allows for income splitting in the following ways. For example, I explained to my client that if she owned discretionary shares in Class A shares and her husband owned discretionary Class B shares they could pay dividends to one class without paying to the other and vice versa. They could also pay dividends in different amounts to each class of shares through dividend sprinkling. The benefits from using this structure in your

corporation allows for efficient and effective tax savings through the usage of dividends to shareholders in varying personal tax brackets. This is opposed to a single shareholder taking all of the dividends or dividends being paid out evenly across multiple shareholders in separate classes based on their percentage holdings. While many think that this form of income splitting is for much larger companies or for newly incorporated entities, consider that even the “Mom and Pop” shop on your local street corner has the ability (if incorporated) to make use of discretionary shares even if they have been in business for some time. As long as your company is a legally incorporated entity it has the ability to issue and use discretionary shares. As always, make sure that you consult with your Chartered Professional Accountant and obtain the correct tax and legal advice before implementing.

What does your coffee say about you?

e’ve all heard the saying “tell me what you eat and I’ll tell you who you are.” But if you tell me what kind of coffee you drink, I’ll tell you who you really are. The days when the vast majority of Canadians thought of coffee only as a cup of filtered or instant coffee are long gone. Specialized coffee shops have become very popular and recently, single-serving systems like the Keurig systems, have taken up residence on Canadians’ kitchen counters. Customers are discovering a wide variety of coffee products and enjoying high-quality coffee in the comfort of their own home. According to survey results from the book The You Code and the website time.com, your type of coffee can say a lot of things about your personality. If you want to know something about someone you just met or are wondering what that handsome gentleman who just ordered a macchiato might be into, read these matching coffee-personalities:

• Latte drinker: These people like to please others, and are often indecisive. They tend to be neurotic. Sound like anyone you know? Perhaps your best friend who can never ever decide what to order at a restaurant? Take the lead: order her a latte. • Cappuccino drinker: Obsessive and controlling, they are also creative, honest, and motivated. They make excellent friends but get bored with unimaginative people. Sound like your boss? Or that nosy, control freak colleague of yours? Next time you buy them a coffee, make it a cappuccino, and they’ll be in seventh heaven. • Mocaccino drinker: These folks are ready to try anything. Considered to be trendsetters, they’re also adventurous and courageous, and like to indulge themselves when it comes to food. Let’s face it: We all dream of being this person. So bring on the mocaccinos. • Macchiato drinker: Cerebral and refined, they linger over life’s small pleasures. You can rely on them in any situation. So next time someone orders a macchiato, pay attention. These results might not be true for everyone but with all the varieties of coffee available today, you’re sure to find one you love. The new Van Houtte Specialty Collection offers these specialty coffees, designed for Keurig K-Cup systems. You can find them on Keurig.ca, in grocery stores and certain retailers. (News Canada)

Sound Upgrades are Worth It swaUNf ApgRyf dw Pwiedw hI huMdw hY

T

he 12-volt industry is beginning to change and we are at the forefront of the new generation of install. New cars are now heavily computer controlled (CANBUS network systems) and technicians have to have a deeper understanding of how they work and install products that will interface best with these systems. It’s an exciting time because now you’re starting to see more of an interaction between different kinds of technologies. You can now use your phone to remote start your car and even have GPS tracking and security features (i.e. Viper SmartStart®), and when you get in your vehicle, you can immediately connect your phone and play the music on it through the sound system and have the ability to do hands free calling. Some vehicles already come with these features from the factory, but many don’t have these options outfitted. Going to a reputable installation shop, you can retro fit virtually any vehicle to get the features you want and need. If you’re looking to upgrade your head unit to take advantage of some 22

of these features, now’s an exciting time. Many double din screens will give you the ability to integrate with your smartphone for hands free calling, enable screen mirroring and other integration features; but the new cool feature from brands like Alpine Electronics, Kenwood and Pioneer is the ability to have gauges visible on your double din screen. Companies like Idatalink Maestro® now allow your aftermarket head unit to safely integrate with the factory computer so you can maintain factory options like Microsoft Sync® and UConnect® and allow you to see vehicle information (available vehicle information will vary) that was not made available to

the consumer. This is great for pickup truck owners who tow and/or haul a lot because now they can see information like transmission temperature or exhaust

gas temperature (depending on the vehicle’s configuration). The last time I checked, EVERYONE likes music. Adding a sub-woofer is the best bang for your buck when it comes to increasing sound quality in your vehicle. What people don’t realize is a sub-woofer accounts for about 30% of your music. By not having one, there is a lot of music the artist intended you to hear that you won’t be able to because regular mid-range speakers are not designed to play these low bass tones. Also, adding a sub helps the other speakers last longer, because they no longer have to attempt to play the bass tones they were never really designed to replicate in the first place. Gone are the days of super large set ups that take up the whole rear of your vehicle (which you can still get it if you’d like). Customers are now leaning towards sound solutions which sound great but are more hidden or take up minimal space within the vehicle so that functionality can also be maximized. There are lot of great bass solutions where we can custom fit sub woofers so that they don’t take up much space. Also, companies like JL Audio with their Stealthbox® build a wide variety of high quality vehicle specific enclosures with sub woofers. DRK Quick Looks

Written by - Jag Dhatt

2015 Kia Sorento

I

f you’re looking for an affordable mid-sized SUV, then you should not rule out the new Sorento. First launched in 2002, the Kia Sorento has gone from an average looking vehicle to one that features contemporary design, 3 engine choices and options that rival luxury SUV’s. For 2015, there aren’t a lot of changes to the body work, as the vehicle was completely redesigned in 2014. The handsome design on the outside is matched by a very classy look on the inside – Kia has made huge strides, as compared to some competitors, in terms of design and looks. The base engine is a 2.4 liter GDI, but I’m guessing most people will choose the 3.3 liter GDI, which offers substantially more power while still providing good fuel economy. The ride is surprisingly smooth and quiet. Bluetooth is standard, as are the power options and even satellite radio. Definitely check out the new Sorento as this vehicle will surprise you. Starting price is roughly $29, 000.

2015 Volkswagen GTI

F

or over 32 years, the GTI has been a top choice of young buyers looking for performance, handling, practicality and German engineering. For 2015, the GTI retains almost the same look, with some ever-so-slight changes, to last year’s model (hmmm…save some money and buy a 2014). As with other manufacturers, Volkswagen has toned down its colour choices on its performance cars – personally, on this car, I would prefer a bright yellow, smoldering amber, or even a bright blue. Under the hood, the 2.0 turbo-charged 4-cylinder just screams when pushed at higher rpm’s; this is a very fun car to drive. Even though the manual is more fun, I would personally choose the DSG automatic because it offers pretty much the same performance. The interior of the GTI is surprisingly roomy for a small car; 4 adults have good room. This is a perfect car for someone who needs to move two kids, but still wants performance. The 2015 GTI starts at $27, 995.

2015 Mazda 6

Y

ou can’t go wrong with a car that just won AJAC’s Car of the Year Award. The Mazda6 has been an owner and journalist favourite for many years. What’s really not to like? It’s got great styling, especially the new generation, great technology, and amazing engineering. The 2015 Mazda6 looks great from almost any angle, with flowing lines that go from front to end. On the inside, the 6 has lots of room for 5 adults. The most impressive features of this car have to be the SkyActiv Technology and great handling. SkyActiv Technology is Mazda’s answer for increasing fuel economy and lowering emissions by using lighter weight materials, unique piston design, and other impressive innovations. The Mazda6 has great handling, as experienced by driving on city and highway roads. Even though some may find the new 6 lacking power when pushed, for most people it should be adequate. If you’re looking at the Mazda6, get the GT package for sure. Starting price for the 2015 is $24, 495. 26

2015 Honda Odyssey

F

or years, Honda has produced vehicles that are tops in build quality, engineering, reliability, and resale value, and the 2015 Honda Odyssey carries on that legacy. Introduced in 1994, the Odyssey has been a fan favourite since its inception because it’s just darn great. This fourth generation received a total redesign in 2011, and for 2015, there’s a new aluminum hood, aluminum front fenders, new front fascia with integrated fog lights, and darker finish projector headlight housings. Overall, the new Odyssey is wider, larger, and has a lower roofline, making it look much sleeker. The 3.5 liter V6, matched with an automatic 6-speed transmission, is silky smooth and probably one of the best in the class. On the inside, the Odyssey offers a comfortable lounge area for eight people. This is the vehicle you want to take for the next family vacation to Disneyland. In my opinion, this is the best minivan in the class and is highly recommended. Starting price for the 2015 Honda Odyssey is $30, 350.

Volkswagen Commits to Electric and Connected Cars

T

his week the world’s largest carmaker presented its annual financial results and with them, the trends that it sees shaping the future of the motor industry. And according to VW, the future will mean more SUVs and crossovers, greater and greater efficiency and use of propulsion methods other than fossil fuels plus internet connectivity as standard on all its cars by 2020. “As a Group, we already have the largest networked vehicle fleet on the road, worldwide,” said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft. And as a Group, VW counts not just its own cars, but those of Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat, Scania Commercial vehicles, and Skoda too; therefore, when Volkswagen talks about the future the industry pays attention. Automated technology rolling out This increased connectivity will also enable the group to usher in greater levels of autonomous driving technology. The first Audis with ‘piloted technology,’ i.e., the ability to take over during motorway driving or in traffic jam and parking situations, are expected to go on sale within the next 18 months, and during its presentation, VW demonstrated how the platform it uses for building all of its cars from Audis to Skodas, is designed to support next-generation selfdriving technology. So it will lead to mass-market self-driving features very soon. “We will be among the first to successfully market this technology with Audi and Volkswagen,” said Winterkorn. More electric choices If hybrids are thrown into the mix, the VW group offers the world’s largest choice of electrically powered cars, from the plug-in VW e-Up! City car to the Porsche Cayenne S E Hybrid and of course the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar. VW pledged to continue developing hybrids but also to put even more energy into full electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars. In fact, it plans to launch a fuel cell VW, Audi and a Porsche, as well as a full plug-in electric Porsche too for good measure. The battery-powered Porsche will be a new model -- possibly a small five-door car similar to the Panamera. Models moving with the times However, that’s for the future. For the present, it is increasing production rates for the Macan, the new small Porsche crossover, because it’s proving so popular. Matthias Müller, Chairman of Porsche’s Board, said: “Until the end of the year, we had delivered our new five-door sports car nearly 45,000 times.” So the company will be aiming to build 65,000 a year from now on. What is proving less popular is ‘quirky.’ VW was one of the first companies to explore retro brands and styling with the resurrection of the Beetle in 1997. It was a massive hit and was soon joined by a similarly retro Mini and Fiat 500. But while the latter two are growing into standalone brands, VW might axe the Beetle altogether to save costs, alongside getting rid of the three-door version of future Polos. Winterkorn said: “The market for three-door vehicles in the compact segment is shrinking fast. In light of this, we are intensively checking whether, for example, we will only build a five-door Polo in the future.” Winterkorn also outlined how reducing the number of trim levels across model ranges - i.e. offering more equipment or features as standard - costs could be cut further while benefiting customers more. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

Jag Dhatt jag@jgkmedia.ca

O

kay, I’ll be honest from the get go – I love Jeeps and I’ve owned three so far. There’s something about your first vehicle that always stays with you; my first, a two-door 1991 4.0 High Output Jeep YJ, painted in midnight blue, was probably the most fun vehicle I’ve ever owned. No, it didn’t have air-conditioning, power windows or door locks, and the seats were somewhat comfortable, although only for front passengers. But the YJ was versatile and had character, and that’s what made it special. I could take it to the beach, with no top and doors, or clean it up and step out of it in a suit for a formal function. Great memories for sure, but let’s move on with the review. 28

May / June 2015

s

2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

No longer is the Jeep Wrangler a two-door setup, and many owners are happy with the change. Since 2007, the Wrangler has been available with four-doors, hence labeled the Unlimited. The 2015 Unlimited Sahara still retains the look of the Wrangler, with its square body structure, tall ride height, and the signature 7-slot grill (to signify it’s availability in all 7 continents). Our test Jeep, including the hard top, was painted Firecracker Red; not my personal colour of choice, but it will make a statement, especially if you’re wanting to stay secluded in the back country. Integrated fog lights at the front and a full-sized spare mounted on the back complete the package. The Wrangler’s look is overall simplistic and utilitarian, which is exactly what this Jeep is built for. Getting into the Unlimited Sahara is a chore if you’re new to the vehicle – yes, it’s high so just get used to it. The extra ride height is there when, and if, you go off-roading. The cabin is where you’ll notice the most significant changes as compared to the older Wranglers. Now, the Unlimited Sahara comes complete with power windows and door locks, automatic climate control, heated seats, a 6.5” touchscreen with navigation, steering mounted controls, chrome/leather wrapped shift knob, a subwoofer, and bright interior accents. But under all this “luxury” there’s still the wash-out interior with removable carpet and drain plugs, in case you need to power wash the interior – aahh, good ‘ol Jeep. Rear passengers now enjoy good space and seating, although the smaller rear doors make entry and exit a little cumbersome. Jeep has made engine choice very simple: you can only get the 3.6 liter Pentastar V6, which puts out 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The Pentastar is a great motor and provides the same low-end torque and umph of the 4.0 HO straight-six engine that was in my 1991 YJ. Our test vehicle was equipped with the 5-speed automatic (6-speed manual is available), which is probably the transmission of choice for most families. Granted, you’re not going to win drag races, but for a Wrangler, it’s pretty quick, with 0-60 run times of about 8.4 seconds. So, you have to ask, how does the new 2015 Unlimited Sahara drive? This part of the review is going to be slightly lop-sided as most of my driving was within the city; however, I did have some hours to take it off-road. On the negative, the Wrangler Unlimited isn’t the most impressive on-road vehicle; steering is quick, but feels disconnected from the road and lacks feedback. Some of this can be attributed to the big 18” OWL tires, which are built more for off-road rather than asphalt. Combine the steering with a limited turning radius, and you’ll find parking, especially parallel, to be tedious in the initial stages. Once you get used to it, no problem. The ride is a little rough, yet definitely not harsh or punitive – it’s much better than my ’91 YJ, but doesn’t really compare to a modern, fully-enclosed SUV or crossover. My kids actually liked the minor jolts when going over speed bumps on the way to school: “Go over more bumps, Dada,” was all I heard, and of course, I obliged. On the highway, the four-door Wrangler’s body shape does affect its fuel economy. With a boxy design and lack of much aerodynamics, this isn’t a vehicle built to be driven as a regular

highway commuter. Fuel economy is rated at 14.8 L/100 km city and 11.7 L/100 km highway – not bad, but not great. During my time with the Wrangler Unlimited, there was continuous rain for most of the week. Although my kids couldn’t enjoy the Jeep in all its naked glory, it did allow me to re-live, er, rather test, its capabilities on some muddy off-road terrain, where the

Jeep feels right at home. A friend’s empty farm acreage was a great location to get the Jeep dirty. In 4WD mode, I was able to drive through mud, on flat and hilly terrain, with no problem; the Jeep just kept moving without a glitch. This year, Vancouver wasn’t blessed with much, if any, snow, but I bet that this Jeep would perform exceptionally well in winter conditions. After the muddy farm, I took the Jeep on some off-road trails in the Abbotsford area, where again, I had no trouble on terrain of any type. When a manufacturer puts a Trail-Rated emblem on the truck, you know it’s tried and tested and the Wrangler Unlimited doesn’t disappoint. Ever since Jeep introduced the Unlimited version in 2007, giving buyers more options, Wrangler sales have steadily increased over the years. Just look around and you’ll notice a lot of shiny, clean Jeep Wranglers on the road, whether two-door or four-door. Granted, most of these probably won’t see dirt trails or back country roads, but that’s not why people buy them. The Jeep Wrangler has poise, character, charm, strength, and of course, amazing offroad capability. How much do I like the Wranglers? Well, all my Jeeps had the same bumper stickers: “God Drove a Jeep” – enough said. May / June 2015

1995 Fast & Furious

ith the release of the new Fast and Furious movie, it’s only fitting to have a Toyota Supra as this issue’s classic car. Agreed, the 1995 Supra is not really a classic, but the image of Paul Walker’s character, Brian O’Conner, driving the candy orange Supra, with Vin Diesel at his side, has already become a classic image in many people’s minds, especially after it “smoked” the Ferrari. The 1995 Supra was the last generation of the car, and borrowed a lot from the Lexus SC300/400. The look was completed redesigned with more curves and rounded body styling. The front end of the ’95 Supra looked great, and the back end – well, either you liked it or you didn’t. There was a massive, high spoiler and a bulbous rear end. But, take the skin off the car, and you were left with a potent

beast that broke records all over the world. The stock Supra put out a healthy 320 hp, but the orange one in The Fast & Furious was pelting out 544 hp. Adding top tuner parts, nitrous oxide, and custom software allowed this car to scream to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. And to stop this car, this Supra was fitted with cross-drilled, slotted 14” Stillen rotors and AP Racing six-piston calipers. Production of the Toyota Supra ended in 2002, mostly likely due to emission standards. Nobody thought, or expected, the Toyota Supra to have such a trusted following. The earlier generations of the car were good machines, but The Fast & Furious franchise took the car to another level. With such an amazing platform, tuners now have the opportunity to build a screaming Supra, similar to the one Paul Walker drove.

How to Maintain Your Concrete Paver Driveway

n interlock driveway or walkway can add distinct curb appeal and elegance to an otherwise dull outside of your home. This is typically the first element that anyone sees when visiting or passing by your house; therefore, it’s important to maintain and keep it in top condition. If there is a valid argument against selecting properly installed interlocking concrete pavers, it is that the jointing sand used to stabilize the pavers creates ongoing and frustrating maintenance issues. It erodes with the onset of wind and rain. It is fertile ground for airborne weed seeds and an inviting home for nearby ant colonies. This is especially true with the popular high-end, tumbled pavers with irregular edges and rounded corners. Larger spaces between pavers mean a greater chance that sand will wash away. However, there are several simple solutions that maintain your interlock pavers and allow hardscape projects to withstand the test of time. Invented by Techniseal polymeric jointing sand is a high-tech mix of graded sand and binder. Activated by water at installation,

the polymer molecules form a strong yet flexible bond with the sand. Polymeric sand prevents erosion caused by sweeping, wind, rain, and even pressure washing. It also inhibits weed growth and resists insect infestation; leaving pavers clean at all times. Representing, on average, less than four percent of the overall cost of a paver installation, polymeric jointing sand is an effective solution when it comes to erosion control, weed inhibition, insect resistance and overall surface response to movement. For homeowners looking to do their own DIY maintenance updates, installation is easy. Just sweep the polymeric sand into the empty joints like regular sand, compact it and wet it. This results in years of enjoyment of your new or existing pavers without the hassle of spraying weeds, re-sweeping sand or cleaning it up where you wish it wasn’t. Effective maintenance also means no cracking or heaving in the spring. Available in both tan and grey, polymeric sand can even enhance the aesthetic appeal of your paver projects. With a quality polymeric sand, you can expect zero maintenance on your pavers as well as peaceful and relaxing summer days for several years. (News Canada)

2015 Nissan Micra

Nissan

Micra

hen Nissan announced the price of the all-new Micra, which was under $10K, I thought, “What could a sub $10K car really give?” I mean, I used to own a Nissan Micra while attending UBC back-in-the-day: a silver two-door hatch back that had no A/C, an impractical pop-up sunroof, and an automatic transmission – not an impressive car, but did serve its purpose for 4 years. Thus, when Nissan offered me the 2015 Nissan Micra base to test drive, I wasn’t expecting much to have changed – would the car that took a 15 year hiatus have something better to offer? In a nutshell, you bet! For a toonie less than $10, 000 here’s what you don’t get: air conditioning, power windows and door locks, power side-view mirrors, automatic transmission, LCD screen, Bluetooth, or USB port. But here’s what you DO get: ABS, traction and stability control, six airbags, tilt steering wheel, AM/FM CD with audio line-in, decent cloth seats front and back, and great styling! Walk around the Micra and there really isn’t a bad angle on this Europeaninspired, built-in Mexico, for-Canada, car. That’s right – this is for Canada only, so nada for the USA. As I nestled myself into the driver seat of this base model Micra, I couldn’t remember the last time I drove a car so simple and plain. The seats are surprisingly comfortable, more-so than let’s say a Yaris. They provide good support and are somewhat adjustable. Back legroom is adequate, and depending on length of commute, it should fair well for most people. All gadgets, dials, and buttons are perfectly placed and easily within reach, obviously. Sure, there’s a lot of plastic all around, but again, what else can you get for this price? What’s more, the plastic doesn’t give the impression of being cheap either. On the road, this little road bug is a blast to drive. It’s peppy, especially with the 5-speed manual transmission – I didn’t have the opportunity to drive the automatic, but my choice would still be the manual. The 1.6 liter engine produces a modest 109 horses and 107 lb-ft of torque. It’s not going to snap your neck, but gets the daily driving job done nicely. Nissan included front and rear stabilizer bars which make taking sharp corners with the Micra fun, even though there is body roll. Steering is very good and and sharp; at times, the car does feel twitchy, but it just makes urban driving that much more fun. And when was the last time you found parking a vehicle to be this easy? The short turning radius and small size of the car make it a breeze to maneuver and park in even the tightest of spaces. Since the lack of power windows and door locks frustrated me (my two young girls found the wind down windows to be a novelty), I would dish out the $3700 more for the SV package, which Nissan is expecting to be the best selling Micra model. If you want the top-of-the-line, it’s only $15,498, with all the bells and whistles. The 2015 Nissan Micra is a welcome surprise for what it offers, even at the base trim level. It’s cheap, fun, and a great car for first time buyers, students, and even those looking for a small urban commuter. Combine the fact that Nissan is offering some great incentive programs, you really can’t go wrong with the new Micra.

Leah Gillanders Automotive Technician at Brian Jessel BMW

Q1. We are debating whether to buy a gasoline powered vehicle or a diesel one? Is one better than the other? What would you choose? A1. When comparing gasoline to diesel engines based on size (liters), you will generally get more horsepower, torque and better fuel economy on the diesel motor. Since diesel motors are built “tougher” with respect to the higher compression ratios, they tend to outlive the gasoline motors, making for better resale on a higher mileage vehicle. The demand for diesel fuel is greater than gasoline, so with the lower gasoline prices, diesel fuel is now slightly more expensive; however, you will make up for the higher price in fuel by the extra km’s you will pack on from a tank. Personally, if given the choice between a diesel and gasoline motor in the vehicle of my choice, I would for sure go with the diesel. Q2. Why are many car makers choosing to go with electric steering? Is it just as effective as “regular old-fashioned” steering? A2. To be honest, at first, I was very skeptical of electric steering. Now that I drive and work on vehicles with electric steering more and more, I appreciate this great innovation in technology. Electric steering uses a motor instead of a hydraulic-operated power steering pump and rack. This means one less item that can leak, one less pulley for the motor to drive, thus using less engine power. Additionally, it’s nice having such responsive steering while using minimal effort to steer. Q3. My son wants to take our SUV off-road for a camping trip. Is there anything he should do or be aware of before going off-road? A3: There is no issue with going off road to explore our beautiful country, but make sure you check the following: 1. Make sure you have a spare tire and a kit to change it. Also, check the tire pressure on the spare before you go as you do not want to put a flat spare on. 2. Air down. When you hit a logging or gravel road, let some air out of your tires. If your tires are set to the specification on the door frame take out about 5psi on all wheels. This will help maintain traction and prevent premature wear on the tires. 40

Just Ask Leah 3. Bring extra fluids, especially coolant. There is nothing worse than springing a coolant leak and not being able to drive out just because you didn’t bring any coolant. Distilled water will work in a pinch as well, but it’s best to be prepared with the right fluids.

Q4: Is a rearwheel drive car really a better option if you want to have a sportier drive? I’ve seen that most sports cars are rear-wheel. A4: Rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicles, have a more balanced drive train, which aids in better power delivery and handling. When you press the gas, the drive wheels (rears) press down on the road, so they gain traction. When they lose traction, the car has a tendency to over steer, or cut a corner sharper than intended, which is what a lot of sports’ car drivers like. The loss of directional stability means it becomes more responsive. It also makes rear-wheel drive vehicles “easier” to drift.

Eating with Pash-ion

EATING WITH PASH-ION Pash Brar Mobile Leasing Rep. at Auto One Leasing LP

I

heard about Ban Chok Dee restaurant after a friend said they’d heard it had the best Thai food. Going to investigate revealed a pleasant surprise. Amazing Thai food! The interior boasts some comfy booths by the windows and features a dark wood and red wall Thai decor. To get a booth, you should definitely call ahead to make a reservation. In fact, you should always make a reservation for dinner. It’s very popular and you don’t want to be disappointed with a wait. Parking is free for 2 hours on the street, and when busy it is difficult to find, so leave extra time to park and walk. The staff is very friendly and very attentive. I hate places that ignore you or leave you waiting, but this is not the case. All of the staff offer assistance and are pleasant and courteous. My friend was a half hour late and there was a line up for tables in the waiting area, but I didn’t feel pressured by the staff at all. I drank my fragrant jasmine tea and enjoyed while waiting. I tried the chicken satay and prawn in crunch noodles as appetizers. Both were great with moist chicken and perfectly cooked prawn, as well as the sauces. The satay came with a fantastic peanut sauce for dipping. The prawn came with a plum sauce. The plum sauce

is homemade and not out of a little plastic packet you squeeze out. Homemade is always best! For dinner I had green curry chicken. This is my must have favorite Thai dish! The best part is they sell the green curry paste if you ask so you can make it again at home! Spicy and delicious, though the sauce was a bit watery, a bit of thickening would have made it perfect. While watery but the flavour didn’t lack. I also ordered Pad Thai. This was by far the best Pad Thai I have had at any Thai restaurant in BC. You are also allowed to choose how spicy you want the food, from mild to hot. The cashew chicken I also ordered had perfectly moist chicken and crisp fresh vegetables, and crunchy cashew nuts. They weren’t skimpy on cashews either. Now I could see why the place was packed. Not an empty table to be found and on a Sunday night! For dessert I ordered coconut ice cream. It was nicely decorated but I was not fooled by the cherry and chocolate sauce display. This ice cream was stale. I knew right away before taking a bite that the texture was too icy from trying to spoon it with difficulty, and with a bite I con-

firmed it was stale. I cannot stand ice cream scrapped from the sides of a container after it’s gone stale for weeks and iced over. Other than a poor dessert, the food and service was great. The restaurant offers special events and has cooking classes which take place in their patio and it was a lot of fun. I took class A and want to take class B next, which is currently sold out. Ban Chok Dee is open 7 days a week for lunch from 11am-3pm and 4:309:30pm for dinner, and take-out orders are 10% off. It’s definitely worth the drive for great Thai food.
