DRK Editorial

Editor’s Note

Jag Dhatt Editor-in-Chief

Publisher // JGK Media Inc.

Last year at this time, I was spending quite a bit of time riding my motorcycle. This year, with an unseasonably wetter spring, my motorcycle is still sitting in the garage. Hopefully that changes soon and warmer winds prevail. The last few months have been very busy for JGK Media Inc, especially with new vehicles launches. We were one of the first to drive the new Land Rover Discovery in beautiful Utah and honestly, what an amazing luxury SUV. Then there was the new C-HR, Toyota’s new subcompact SUV that is set to tackle the HR-V and Mazda CX3. Mercedes has added another coupe to its line-up: we drove the all-new GLC 300 and AMG GLC 43 in Alberta’s Badlands. Finally, we just got back from Toronto, where we drove the new Chevy Equinox in the Niagara area. This month, we’ll also be flying to Prince Edward Island to drive the new Honda Odyssey, a personal family favourite. The 2017 Vancouver International Auto Show was a huge success, with visitors getting the chance to get up close and personal with some of the latest vehicles. Some notables were definitely the Range Rover Velar and the Lexus LS500h. The 2017 Brian Jessel Cabrio Gala was another huge success, with proceeds will benefit Pancreatic Cancer Canada and Pancreas Centre BC. Make sure you come out and support the event next year. In this issue, read the complete story of the new Land Rover Discovery, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Infiniti QX30 and the Lamborghini Huracan. Until next time, safe driving and even safer riding. ipCly swl ienHW idnW ‘c mYN bhuqw smW motr sweIkl dI svwrI ‘c hI guzwr irhw sI[pr mOsm dI kmwl ik bhwr dw ieh mOsm slHwibAw hoieAw hox krky myrw motr sweIkl vI grwj ‘c KVHw Arwm PurmwA irhw hY[Aws hY ik AslI mOsm CyqI hI prq Awvygw Aqy grm hvwvW vgx l`g pYxgIAW[ ipCly ku`J mhIny jy jI ky mIfIAw ieMk nwL vDyry ru`Jy rhy[^ws krky nvIAW vhIklW ju lWc hoeIAW sn[AsIN pihly sW ijnHW ny nvIN Land Rover Discovery clweI[ auh vI XUtwA dy suMdr ielwky ‘c[ pr jy g`l is`DI swdI krIey qW ikMny kmwl dI ieh lgzrI AYs XU vI hY! ieh hI nhIN nvIN C-HR, jo toietw dI nvIN subcompact SUV hY ijhVI HR-V Aqy Mazda CX3 dw mukwblw krygI[mrsIfz vwiLAW ny AwpxI lweIn ‘c hor vwDw kr id`qw hY: AsIN Albrtw dy bYflYNfz ‘c pUrI nvIN nkor HR- V Aqy Mazda CX3. vI clweI[ hwl ‘c hI trWto qoN vwpsI hoeI hY ij`Qy inAwgrw ielwky ‘c Chevy Equinox vI clweI[ hux AglI Xojnw ipRMs AYfvwrf AweIlYNf jwx dI hY ij`Qy ik swfy pirvwr dI psMd Honda Odyssey ‘qy h`Q Azmwey jwxgy[ jy vyiKAw jwvy qW vYnkuvr dw ieMtrnYSnl Awto SoA bhuq hI kwmXwb ho inbiVAw[ ie`Qy phuMcx vwiLAW ny bhuq hI nvIAW vhIklW dy nyiVEN drSx kIqy[ienHW vDIAw ‘coN kU`J igxIAW jwx vwLIAW ‘c Velar Aqy Lexus LS500h Swml hn[ 2017 Brian Jessel Cabrio Gala ie`k hor kwmXwb SoA ho inbiVAw ijs dI kmweI Pancreatic Cancer Canada and Pancreas Centre BC nUM imlygI[ieh Xwd r`Kxw ik ieh eIvYNt jdoN Agly swl hovygI audoN zrUr phuMcxw[ ies AMk ‘c Land Rover Discovery, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Infiniti QX30 Aqy Lamborghini Huracan. dIAW pUrIAW khwxIAW zrUr pVHxIAW[ Agly AMk q`k Alivdw pr syP fRweIivMg hI nhIN syPr rweIifMg v`l zrUr iDAwn dyxw[

Motorcycle Crash Injuries Only Getting Worse

T

he 97th Vancouver International Auto Show proved to be the most successful year since moving to a 6-day show, with a double digit increase in attendance by 13.7%, resulting in 115,608 show attendees. “The significant attendance numbers this year is a positive perk for all of us involved with the show,” says Executive Director, Jason Heard. “The huge turnout and crowds of people over the weekend once again confirms that British Columbians love their cars, and this is the ultimate place to see, learn and discover new vehicles in a sales and pressure free environment.” Single day attendance reached record highs on both Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday seeing over 30,000 visitors to the event and Sunday with over 21,000. These numbers solidify that the Vancouver International Auto Show is the best attended consumer show in Western Canada. “Over the past three years the Vancouver show has developed a significant

momentum, drawing international attention from media, and showcasing worldrenowned exhibitors,” says Heard. “We have created a model that is crafted to people’s love affair of the automobile – from exotics and electrics to classics and customs, the show offers something for everyone. We are once again planning to expand the show in 2018, and are looking forward to continuing to evolve the most anticipate auto event in Western Canada.” The 2018 show is slotted to run March 28 – April 1, 2018 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

CBC says that the number of B.C. motorcyclists injured in crashes is on the rise. Last year, more than 1,600 motorcyclists were injured in 2,600 separate incidents, which is up from 1,500 in 2015. Thirty-two motorcyclists died in 2015 as a result of crashes. According to ICBC road safety manager Mark Milner, the recent trends are alarming. “In the last few years, we have seen an increasing number of crashes involving motorcycles, and we’ve seen the number of injuries going up as well,” he said. Milner says accidents generally surge in the spring and into the summer — a time of year when many riders decide to hit the road. In July and August, an average of six motorcyclists are injured each day in B.C.

DRK’s Latest Buzz

Open Road Auto Group Expands to Washington

B

.C.’s largest automotive dealership group has taken over the only supercar dealership in Washington state. The term “supercar” defies easy explanation but is usually applied to powerful elite sports cars or grand tourers, often from high-end makers such as Ferrari (Nasdaq:RACE) or McLaren, which appeal to vehicle enthusiasts and collectors with very deep pockets.

While Craig Stowe, founder of the Luxury and Supercar Weekend, dubbed Vancouver North America’s supercar capital in 2016 for having the highest number of supercars per capita, sales growth may have peaked. Scotiabank’s (TSX:BNS) Global Auto Report released last month said luxury car sales in B.C. have grown 25% this year. But it warned that growth would moderate as B.C. provincial activity softens. “I think certainly the growth trajectory has slowed,” said Dimitri

Surrey Cop Seriously Injured by Motorcycle

A

Surrey traffic cop was seriously injured two weeks ago after being struck by a motorcycle. Surrey RCMP say the 43-year-old officer was hit just before midnight at the south end of the Pattullo Bridge. They say the officer was struck while conducting a speed check and after he stepped into the centre lane to flag down an allegedly speeding motorcyclist. “The member [of the RCMP] suffered significant injuries and remains in hospital,” Cpl. Scotty Schumann said. “It doesn’t appear, for whatever reason, the motorcyclist saw him in time to stop or saw him at all.” Schumann says the officer’s injuries are not life threatening but he will be off work for some time. He says the motorcyclist was not injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution. Police are investigating the collision but Schumann says it could be months before any charges are recommended.

Kotsalis, area general manager for OpenRoad Auto Group. “We’re not going to see the kind of increases we’ve seen in that last eight or 10 years. I think we’ll continue to see steady, slower growth but there’s still room to push the needle a little bit further in Vancouver.” Expected slower growth in B.C.’s luxury and supercar market is causing OpenRoad Auto Group to look south. The group recently bought a Bentley, Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce (LON:RR) dealership in Bellevue, Washington. Washington provides a newer market for the supercar industry, which has only recently started to develop significantly in that state. OpenRoad saw Washington’s aging population with growing disposable incomes as a market it couldn’t pass up. Despite the threat of increased trade barriers from the new U.S. president, Kotsalis is optimistic about the stability of the market based on the early days of the new administration. “So far, what we’ve seen in early days is that the market continues to perform and seems like quite a stable market,” said Kotsalis. “Whether there will be any effect in the future remains to be seen, but for now we’re surely comfortable.” Supercar sales in B.C. grew at five times the pace of all new car sales in 2016. That has not eaten into new car sales from lowerend brands, Kotsalis said, because supercars are usually bought in addition to, rather than instead of, other vehicles. Blair Qualey, president and CEO of the New Car Dealers Association of BC, said low import taxes in Canada have contributed to Vancouver’s success in the supercar industry. Countries like Malyasia and Indonesia have high import taxes to promote sales of domestic car brands. China and Hong Kong have luxury sales taxes that apply to supercars. Canada has neither. “The supercar retail industry has been swinging way above [its] weight for some time now in the Lower Mainland.”

CHiPS Could Be This Generation’s Official Dumb Motorcycle Movie

I

n case you hadn’t heard (we hadn’t or maybe we did and we didn’t care), Hollywood is giving CHiPs a reboot, in the form of this movie, starring that mildly humorous actor from AntMan, and that guy who’s married to Kristen Bell. And hey, to give Michael Peña and Dax Shepard credit, they’re typically pretty funny guys. But this film looks like it could be the next great Dumb Motorcycle Movie. You know, like Biker Boyz was in 2003 (honourable mention to Torque). Every generation has one, and it seem’s we’re overdue. But we’ll reserve final judgment until some CMG staffer is forced to see the film. And just because we’re thorough, here’s a link to the KZ1000-powered opener from the original TV series, in all its beige polyester glory.

Audi Wins Automotive Innovations Award 2017

F

or the second consecutive time, Audi achieved overall victory in the Automotive Innovations Award in the premium manufacturer category. With this, the brand with the four rings once again demonstrated its versatility and

innovative strength in important future segments like aerodynamics, lightweight construction, connectivity and piloted driving. “With 84 new improvements in the reporting period, Audi showed the most innovation of all brands (volume and premium brands) and is therefore the most innovative brand overall,” the jury stated in its explanation for the decision. Four subject areas were incorporated into the evaluation: automotive drive systems, autonomous driving and safety, vehicle concepts and body, and interface and connection. In addition, Audi garnered awards as the most innovative brand in the two last-named individual categories. “These awards show that we bring our brand claim – ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ – to life, and are leading when it comes to many innovation issues,” said Prof. Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, at the award ceremony in Frankfurt am Main. “Especially in aerodynamics and lightweight construction, in connectivity, driver assistance systems and piloted driving, we are in a very comfortable position and are working hard to maintain our competitive edge.” The Center of Automotive Management and PricewaterhouseCoopers AG presented the Automotive Innovations Award for the fifth time this year. The award honors the most innovative car manufacturers and suppliers for the year. Over 1,162 innovations from 19 automobile manufacturers and 60 brands were considered for the award.

It’s All Abo

t. George, Utah: We all have them – those pesky expectations – about family, school, work, friends, and yes, even from the vehicles we drive. And when you hear the name Land Rover, your expectations just get a lot higher, elevated to the next level. For the past many years, the LR3 and LR4 have been synonymous with off-road grandeur, taking people through terrain that would put most other SUV’s to shame. Thus, when Land Rover revealed that the legendary LR4 was going to be replaced with a modern Discovery, I wondered if my expectations would still be met. To find out, Land Rover Canada flew a select few journalists to breathtaking Utah and Arizona to be the first to drive the new 2017 Land Rover Discovery. 10

Utah and Arizona provide an amazing playground for the new Discovery. Some of the most breathtaking scenery, often found on postcards or in Natural Geographic, was ours to discover. To make sure this was an overall experience, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) even had a

branded private plane to escort us lucky writers from LA to St. George, where the adventure was to begin. As we disembarked in St. George, Utah, awaiting us was a crisp sunny day and of course, our fleet of Land Rovers‌the good times were about to start.

With fuel economy now being important for most manufacturers, As most of my friends and family know, I’m one of those people Land Rover designers were successful in designing a luxury SUV who spends a lot of time in cars; from simply driving to the office that was not only 1000 pounds lighter than its predecessor, but more and/or business meetings to taking kids to their activities, I crave an aerodynamic, spacious, and longer. gasoline engine puts out 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, giving more consistent power delivery at higher speeds. Both engines are mated with an 8-speed ZF transmission and a very impressive four-wheel drive system, all of which we tested! As our armada of Land Rovers left St. George airport, we had a chance to marvel the scenery of Utah. The sky was a brilliant azure and only deepened the beauty of the landscape. Zion National Park gave us winding roads where the Discovery proved to be elegant, as expected. Our conversations were never overshadowed by any road or engine noise – everything was picture perfect, and of course, we took plenty a picture along the route. The truly fun stuff began when we took the Discovery away from the asphalt. Part one of the off-road course was through some deep

sand trails. The orange sands were tricky, but Discovery drove through them without breaking a sweat. The gasoline powered engine proved to be very capable in the deep sands, and for most owners, this would be considered extreme terrain because come on, how many will actually take their capable luxury SUV’s offroad? Answer not required. After a quick coffee stop, the drive continued through some great dry river beds, where once again, the Discovery demonstrated its agile nature. Seating position was great, providing great visibility all-around. Seating comfort was also impressive and not once did I have to fidget around to feel at ease. If you’ve ever seen modified SUV’s do rock climbing, you know it’s nothing short of impressive. There was an amazing drive route where we, not the instructors, were going to rock climb. Remember that the Discovery we drove was NOT modified at all – 100% stock. I was slightly concerned but JLR instructors reassured us that the Terrain Response 2 system will deliver. This time, I was driving the diesel V6. With drive mode set to Rock Crawl, air suspension all the way up, I edged the Discovery towards the rock path. Slowly but surely, the Rover crawled…up up up. I gained more confidence, especially what I saw the vehicle in front of me doing. Another twenty feet and I had the Discovery driving at almost a 30-degree incline; the highlight came next when the right front tire was off the ground, the vehicle perfectly balanced. To show the rigidity of the Discovery’s chassis and body, we opened the doors, got out (took pictures of course) and then got back in. While getting back into a vehicle that is at such an angle isn’t easy, it was impressive that the doors still closed with ease.

With the nose of the vehicle pointed at the sky, I felt like I was climbing Mount Olympus itself, all the while in complete comfort and safety. Again, hardly any owner will take their Discovery to rock crawling, but knowing that they can is security enough. The third and final off-road component was by far the most fun: the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, where the dunes were something out of the Prince of Persia movie. It was an open playground and the goal was simple – have a blast without getting stuck. Pretty simple, right. With Sand mode selected, air suspension again set to the highest, and the tire pressure set to only 15 psi, we were off. Let’s get one thing straight, the sand was deep and we navigated the Discovery up steep embankments and down some pretty harrowing drops. The key, as we were told, is to keep the momentum and you know what, it worked. Not once did I get stuck! I’m not saying that it as all me, but I’d like to think I had something to do with it. And in case something did go wrong, we had our lifeline. Atop the highest sand dune sat the Defender, watching over its younger siblings who were playing in the sand. (Expectations Exceeded) Conclusions: As we concluded two days of driving, one thing dawned on me – in total, we had spent almost 15 hours behind the wheel of this new Land Rover! JLR wanted to make sure we experienced everything that the Discovery had to offer and we did. The 2017 Discovery will be available mid-2017 and in three trim levels. Most people won’t buy the base SE, which starts at $61,

500. Nope, I suspect most Canadian roads will see either the HSE, starting at $68,500 or the very limited Discovery First Edition, which will run you $82,500. Is it a lot of money? Considering its luxury, heritage, and capabilities, definitely not. The Discovery has a lot going for it: great looks, fantastic engineering, impressive safety systems, updated technology, and off-road capabilities that put other luxury SUV’s to shame. This could be the perfect luxury SUV on the market. And as a parent, what more could I ask for? In the new Discovery, the “Road Not Taken” might be just the road to take. (Expectations Fully Exceeded)

LP580-2

ou’ve got to be a certain kind of person to own a Lamborghini. It’s not just the price factor – there are many cars with similar sticker shock. And there are plenty of others whose power and handling prowess far surpass the Italian luxury brand’s. But for sheer, ostentatious display of wealth and “look at me” factor, few come close to the raging bull. After a few days with the Huracan LP580-2, I realized that I wasn’t cut out to be a Lambo owner. Never mind that my bank account’s short a few triple digits and that this “entry level” supercar is worth more than what I paid for my house. It’s 18

the relentlessness of being the centre of attention everywhere, all the time, that gets overwhelming after the initial rush wears off. Of course, for the typical exotic car owner, that’s part of the allure. And frankly, the Huracan shows a bit more visual restraint than some of Lamborghini’s more overtly flamboyant, decahedron-styled offerings. This isn’t the Lambo you’d buy if you’re into cruising slowly through the café district, sport mode engaged, turning heads with exhaust blatt downshifts. The ostentatiously wealthy are unlikely to be impressed that this is the least expensive model in Lamborghini’s portfolio, that it’s less powerful – and that it lacks the brand’s signature four-wheel drive.

2016 Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2

No, the Huracan LP580-2 is being touted as the Lamborghini for “real drivers”. It’s less powerful than the AWD Huracan LP 610-4 that arrived in 2014, but lighter, better balanced and with the power directed solely through the rear wheels, the LP580-2 may just be best-handling Lambo of them all. Sure, the 5.2 litre V10 has been detuned – from 602 to 572 to make the rear-wheel-driven coupe a bit more manageable. That’s rather a moot point when you consider it’s the lightest Lamborghini you can buy. Getting rid of the differential, its related hardware shaves off 33 kg – lightness being a prime ingredient for any true sports car. It also rearranges the weight balance to 40/60 front/rear from 43/57. The steering software’s been tweaked, and the suspension retuned to deliver crisper turn-in and better handling. There are three drive modes: Strada (Italian for street), Sport, and Corsa (race), with increasing degrees of suspension adjustment and throttle response. Clearly, this Lambo’s been engineered for more than boulevard cruising. Surprisingly, the LP580-2 is fairly easy to live with, if not exactly practical. There’s not much room in the two-seater cockpit, and the forward “frunk” can accommodate little more than a small carryon. But the highly-bolstered sport seats offer plenty of adjustment, and when left in “Strada” mode, the LP580-2 behaves rather civilly. There’s only one available transmission; a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with paddle shifters. Purists will probably moan about the lack of manual gearbox, but the DCT rips off beautifully-executed shifts in Sports mode, the exhaust popping and crackling delightfully. The thick, flat-bottomed wheel feels nicely weighted when cruising, firming up depending on which drive modes selected. Particularly nice are the wheel-mounted roller buttons for the turn signals – they’re so easily accessed it’s a wonder they haven’t become industry standard. The cockpit is bisected by a bank of switchgear, with a fighter-jet inspired red start button, and Audi-style MMI controller. Upholstered in suede and leather with aluminum trim, it’s a purposeful environment if not overtly sumptuous. It comes with a fairly modest colour display with navigation, and while there is a decent audio system on board – you’d be crazy to opt for it over the mellifluous rumbling of the V10 right behind your shoulders. Flick the drive mode switch to “Corsa” and that rumble becomes a snarl, which escalates to a banshee scream at speed. Throttle and shift response are laser-quick, and the suspension becomes racetrack firm. It also removes the traction nannies – and with so much power and lively handling, it’s really easy to break the rear tires loose in the LP580-2. Only marginally slower than the more powerful LP 610-4, which blasts from 0-100km/hr in 2.8 seconds, the LP580-2 at 3.3 is one seriously fast car. Fortunately, the exclusively developed Pirelli rubber has terrific grip, and the test car came with optional carbon-composite brakes – a must for any track-day enthusiast. While the Huracan LP580-2’s base price of $219,500 makes it the most affordable Lamborghini available, slathering on options such as the transparent engine bonnet with carbon forged trim, magneto rheological suspension, red painted callipers and carbon-composite brakes quickly brings the price up around $260,000. But when you consider that’s roughly half the price of a base Aventador, the Huracan LP580-2 just might be the best Lamborghini money can buy.

Big News From the Richmond Auto Mall

I

t’s big and it’s about to get bigger. The Richmond Auto Mall, arguably the largest complex of its kind in Canada and the early innovator of the Auto Mall concept in this country, will be expanding even further in its 30th year thanks to the recent purchase of properties adjoining its prime location at Westminster Highway and Knight Street in Richmond, BC. Since it opened in October of 1985, the Richmond Auto Mall has been successfully positioning itself to stay ahead of the evolving transportation needs of the many communities it serves. “While there are additional features, renovations and a dealership still to be announced,” says Auto Mall Association General Manager Gail Terry, “we can tell you that BPL Auto Group’s Richmond Acura will be a key addition and that the Cowell Auto Group’s Audi of Richmond and Jaguar Land Rover of Richmond will be building amazing new facilities.” “Once that’s done,” adds Terry, “the next phase will demolish today’s current Audi and Jaguar Land Rover locations to build a new, contemporary Volkswagen store. This will allow yet another new franchise to be added on the current Volkswagen lot, bringing the total dealership count to 16, providing consumers the largest selection of new brands and used vehicles in one location in all of Canada. The expansion will definitely enrich the customer experience even further.” The development will allow the dealers to offer additional innovative, state-of-the-art stores in an efficient, relaxing and

22

engaging destination. Plans include enhancements well beyond the current norm in automotive customer service where clients and guests will be catered to and entertained. Completion of Richmond Acura and the new Audi of Richmond and Jaguar Land Rover of Richmond facilities is slated for Autumn 2016. “The projects on the table already have an estimated investment of $120 million in land and buildings,” says Ryan Cowell of the Cowell Group, the developer and a major stakeholder in the expansion. “With the other Auto Mall owners’ plans for the future taken into consideration, further investments of $60 million in construction and renovations are not unrealistic over the next three to five years.” The Richmond Auto Mall is already a city-within-a-city offering all manner of satellite businesses from a restaurant, convenience store and insurance to car detailing, a courtesy shuttle and rentals. “The growth is a commitment to our current and future customers that the Richmond Auto Mall will remain the premier place in Metro Vancouver to shop for vehicles and to service your vehicle,” says Sylvester Tai, the President of the Richmond Auto Mall Association. This is the second major expansion since the mall opened with nine dealerships soon followed by a tenth. Four more were added in 1990. “In spite of the massive amount of construction involved, it won’t interfere with the current shopping experience,” notes Terry. “The new development sits behind the original Auto Mall which means customers can enjoy business as usual at all of our dealerships during the construction phase”.

Dining with Pashion

Antonio’s Restaurant 33486 S Fraser Way, Abbotsford, BC V2S 2B5

I

was recently in Abbotsford, and one of my friends knew I wasn’t as delighted as I could be and texted to grab a bite. I was dealing with the toughest time of my life, so I said sure. I was hungry and tired of grabbing snacks. I wanted a real meal. He invited me to two different restaurants first and since he got there first, he didn’t like them. He changed his mind twice and left claiming they were too empty and not lively enough. The third time was the charm and I headed to Antonio’s Restaurant. It was a Saturday night and most of the tables were full. It is family run and the mother and daughter both served us. My friend had been coming for years and knew just what would cheer me up, my favorite strachietella soup. I looked on the menu and said I don’t see it on the menu. My friend said you ask for it. We asked the daughter and she said it was too busy and the cook wouldn’t have time to do a special order. I was disappointed and looked back to the menu. The Mom came next and my friend said, “Please can we get the strachietella soup. We know it’s busy but we can wait.” Mom agreed! We nibbled on bread as we waited and am always surprised when I get bread and butter in an Italian restaurant instead of bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I was hungry so I didn’t complain. We waited and soon came our piping hot soup. It is my favorite and after a long hard day it tasted delicious! I wish they offered freshly grated parmesan cheese and black pepper. That would have made it even better. I was not accustomed to using a pepper shaker at the table. My friend had already eaten before he came, so he said he wouldn’t eat anything more or just have a few bites of mine. I was excited to see my favorite gnocchi on the menu. As I tried to decide between meat sauce or cheese sauce, my friend spoke up and chose cheese sauce when the Mom came. In hind sight, this

was not a good sign for my hungry tummy and his supposedly full tummy. When the gnocchi came out piping hot from the kitchen I was excited. I love pillowy light as air gnocchi! Again a dusting of parmesan cheese and black pepper would have been appreciated, but I was starving, so I took it as is. My friend took a few off the plate, which I didn’t mind. But then that few started increasing, and increasing. Soon my gnocchi was gone and I was still hungry! “Hey! You ate MY dinner!” “It was so good!” was the response I got. Ok, it was good! But he ate my dinner! As I shook my head and laughed I announced,”I’m still hungry!” We looked at the dessert menu and i chose the Baccio Bianco. It’s a white chocolate gelato, covered with a thin coating of white chocolate and a surprise raspberry centre. The restaurant cut it in quarters and dusted it with a bit of unsweetened cocoa. These frozen treats are made by Mario’s Gelati in Vancouver. Mario’s supplies multiple restaurants with frozen desserts. I love this treat. So did my friend who again dug in. I was finally full! Even after sharing dessert! Antonio’s has been a well visited restaurant for many years in Abbotsford. They serve good authentic Italian food and welcome everyone with warmth and Italian hospitality. I have been going to Antonio’s for years, and I hope for many years to come. It’s worth the drive to Abbotsford and I will be back. Next time I will bring my boxing gloves to block wandering forks off my plate so I can enjoy my WHOLE meal to myself! But really you can’t help it. The food really is THAT good! Mangiamo! Toyota C-HR

I

Mercedes GLC Coupe

A

n the very tight sub-compact SUV market, there’s a new player in town. Introducing the all-new Toyota C-HR, (i.e. Compact High Rider), a vehicle aimed at young urban hipsters. However, for these hipsters, there is no navigation, Android Auto, or Apple CarPlay available…neither is AWD. If you can look past these minor quirks, then this is a great vehicle. We had the opportunity to drive the new C-HR during a cold, rain-soaked couple of days in Montreal. If the weather was miserable, the C-HR was anything but, proving to be very capable on roads, highways, and the track. You know that a manufacturer is confident in its vehicle when you’re allowed to drive it on an auto-cross route! The 2.0-liter VALEMATIC engine puts out 144 hp and is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). I can attest that this is a one of the best CVT’s on the market. Styling wise, the C-HR has a modern touch, reflecting what Toyota calls a “sexy diamond” theme, both inside and outside the vehicle. With certain colour choices, especially the two-tone variations, the new Toyota C-HR will definitely turn heads.

few weeks ago, we had the chance to drive MB’s newest coupes, the all-new GLC 300 and AMG GLC 43 in Calgary and surrounding Badlands of Alberta. Forget the argument whether this is a coupe or not – let’s just leave that for the full review. The GLC Coupe follows similar styling cues from its bigger sibling, the GLE Coupe and it is a handsome vehicle. Under the hood, the base 2.0-liter turbocharged motor provides plenty of power for a daily driver, putting out 241 hp and 273 lb.-ft of torque. What is really impressive is the built in-house 9G Tronic transmission, and boy, is it a gem! Shifting through the 9-speed gearbox is effortless, smooth, and quiet. When matched with the AMG 43, it’s also super quick. Driving the GLC Coupe on city streets and highways was what we expected from Mercedes. Once we left the blacktop and headed off-road, we were fully impressed with how sure footed the GLC Coupe was, especially on icy, muddy roads. Most owners of the GLC Coupe won’t do much off-roading, but knowing that you can, makes this vehicle a great choice. And did I mention a GLC 63 soon?

Honda Civic Type R

Ford GT

H

onda took the wraps off one of the most anticipated models with the unveiling of the 2017 Civic Type R at the Geneva Motor Show. The Type R will share the same body style as the 5-door hatchback variant of the 10th generation global Civic platform and will be powered by an Ohio built 2.0-liter DOHC, direct-injected and turbocharged i-VTEC inline 4-cylinder. This powerplant will put out 306hp and 295lb-ft of torque. To match this engine, the Type R has an upgraded body and chassis and other track-ready, Nurburgring-tuned and tested performance components. According to Honda Canada, the Civic Type R is designed to reward the driver in all driving conditions on the track and on the street, and features three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and +R. For Canada, there will only be a premium-coated trim that features a 7” display touchscreen that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heavily bolstered sport seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum shift knob and sport pedals. The Type R goes on sale in Canada this summer. 26

hat’s more special than having one of the iconic supercars be built in our very own Canada? Especially one that took the podium at the world famous 24 Hours of Le Mans last year. The 2017 Ford GT is easily one of the hottest and most anticipated supercars in history. Based on looks alone, it’s a piece of fine art, fit for display in any exclusive art gallery. Gone is the supercharged V8 from the previous GT – the 2017 Ford GT features a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that will push more than 600hp. The engine is linked to a sevenspeed dual clutch automatic gearbox. To keep the body weight down to a minimum, Ford will be using both carbon fibre and aluminum. Built by Multimatic Inc., who are masters in the autoparts and motorsports world, the Ford GT will feature technology systems that are ground breaking. For example, the active aerodynamic elements include a multi-position rear wing that mirrors the likes of the P1 and LaFerrari to make sure the rear end stays planted at top speeds. Also cool is that the doors hinge up and forward and don’t incorporate portions of the roof.

Nurburgring Lap Record for 2018 Porsche 911 GT3

N

ot changing a great deal over the years is an accusation often levelled at the Porsche 911 by its detractors, and it’s fair to say the way it looks doesn’t alter very much at all. However, what does change is the way this legendary sports car performs, and the latest 2018 version of the 911 GT3 really does appear to be a big step forward for the Porsche. Setting a new lap record for itself at the Nurburgring Nordschleife might be what we’d expect from a new version of such an iconic performance car, but knocking more than 12 seconds off its previous best is enough to make even the most seasoned observers sit up and take notice.

The latest 2018 911 GT3 celebrated making its debut on the legendary German track by clocking a lap time of 7 minutes 12.7 seconds, which is a stunning 12.3 seconds better than the best its predecessor managed. What perhaps makes this achievement even more impressive is the fact although this is undoubtedly a track-bred car, it’s not some hardcore race car with slick tires that’s not designed for a daily driver. The new GT3 does make use of more pure racing technology than the previous GT3, but its power ratings are relatively modest when compared to the output of some rivals offering similar levels of performance. The 2018 model has the same 4.0-liter 500 horsepower engine as its predecessor, which is the high-revving, non-turbo flat-six also seen in the 911 GT3 Cup race car. It’s the way the Porsche handles the power that makes all the difference here though. The GT3 that was used to set the new lap time employs rear-axle steering, a sevenspeed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission, and Michelin Sport Cup 2 N1 tires, so that means it took to the track in its production specifications. Andreas Preuninger, Porsche Director of the GT Product Line, said of the new car, “A few years ago, lap times like this could only ever be achieved by thoroughbred race cars with slick tires. The new GT3 achieves this with comparatively modest power, and is still fully suitable for everyday use.”

2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

2017

Chrysler

PACIFICA

HYBRID

M

ore than 35 years ago, Chrysler created the minivan segment with its Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager, spawning all of kinds of copycats and inventing a vehicle type that remains the most practical thing on four wheels. However, with crossovers and SUVs stealing the minivan’s thunder (and most of its market share), Chrysler hopes the addition of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its new Pacifica will breathe some life into the segment.

28

MAY / JUNE 2017

The PHEV label indicates that this Pacifica has a gasoline-electric powertrain like those in other hybrids (such as the Toyota Prius) but can also travel up to 50 km on electricity alone with a fully-charged battery, with the gas engine picking up the slack and providing a promised total driving range of more than 900 km. In its effort to revive flagging interest in minivans by piggybacking on the attention generated by electric vehicles, what Chrysler has done in the process is create the best-driving version of its latest people mover.

Chris Chase Accredited AJAC Journalist

2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

Electric motors are known for the generous torque they generate, and the Pacifica Hybrid’s pair of them team up with a 3.6-litre V6 (the same one used in regular Pacificas, specially tuned for hybrid duty) to lend this van smooth, strong acceleration. It doesn’t feel quicker than a gas-only model (partly because the hybrid is heavier, owing to its large battery pack) but acceleration comes with a lot less noise. At full throttle, both electric and gas power sources work together, but a decent charge in the battery lets electricity do most of the work. In hybrid mode, Chrysler estimates the Pacifica Hybrid’s fuel consumption at 7.3/7.2 L/100 km in city and highway driving

The Pacifica Hybrid’s biggest practicality compromise is that the battery pack takes up the space under the floor where the second-row stow-and-go seats normally fold away, so this van gets old-fashioned middle seats you need to remove if you want to turn your van into a cargo hauler. What the PHEV conversion doesn’t change is the Pacifica’s upscale feel. Where the standard model already makes a more legitimate claim as a luxury vehicle than the Town & Country it replaced, the Hybrid’s powertrain adds another level of refinement. There are a couple of odd touches, though: for one, you can’t get a panoramic sunroof in the Hybrid, a decision we suspect had to do with cutting weight. But the real head-scratcher is our tester’s lack of auto-dimming mirrors, which come in both the Touring-L Plus and Limited versions of the gasoline-powered Pacifica. That refinement doesn’t come cheap, though, as Chrysler lists the Pacifica PHEV Platinum’s price as $58,000 before any applicable government rebates. Buy one in Ontario and you’ll get $14,000 back, but other jurisdictions are less generous, making this van’s value hard to quantify.

respectively, though there’s obvious potential for the real-world average to be much lower in urban and suburban traffic. Our week of city driving in the Pacifica PHEV came in the dead of winter, when cold weather drove our fuel consumption up to 7.8 L/100 km, mostly because we weren’t willing to deny ourselves the luxury of heat in the name of using no fuel. And while electricity isn’t hard to come by, if all you have access to is a standard 120-volt outlet, charging up for that promised 50 km of electric driving takes about 12 hours. Plug in to a 240-volt charger, however, and the battery will be at full strength in less than three hours.

Ultimately, we don’t think the Pacific Hybrid will reinvigorate the minivan segment the way it might if a $60,000 fully-electric minivan that could go 500 km on a charge was already possible, and if charging infrastructure was widely enough available that such a vehicle would be feasible road-trip transport. What Chrysler has proven, however, is that existing, affordable EV technology is good for more than just small cars, and that it’s possible to build a well-executed vehicle that can move a large family around on very little gasoline. That’s a step in the right direction for electric vehicle technology, which has nowhere to go but up.

and restrictions regarding authorities among shareholder classifications can furthermore be outlined within agreements. Once signed, these agreements become a legal contract that holds weight if disputes arise. While there are no legal requirements to enter shareholder agreements there are however, aspects of the agreement that must follow cited governing laws within a company’s region. Utilized to define expectations among the position of shareholders responsibilities these agreements can serve as a bypass from the need for disputes to be mediated or requiring legal intervention based on governing laws. The benefit of this is meant to provide both parties a clear understanding of terms that uphold the interest of each side. Mandating shareholder agreements as policy provides the proof of ownership percentage when in question or in need of authorizing transfers, sale and valuation of shares, rights and provisions, exit clauses, life insurance and business succession. Dispute resolution is clearly a reason for wanting to maintain records regarding shareholder agreements as they can document fiscal arrangements and director employment conditions over time. Working with an experienced Chartered Professional Accountant and a corporate lawyer to establish the guidelines of a shareholder agreement is best advised from the beginning as there are numerous taxation and legal implications. These trusted advisors can clearly help provide the terms and condition applicable to the governing region of the business.

Volvo Cars Partners with Google to Build Android into New Cars

V

olvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced a close partnership with Google, one of the world’s largest technology companies, to develop the next generation of its award-winning in-car infotainment and connectivity solution based on Android, offering access to a wide array of apps and services. It will launch on new Volvo models within two years. The partnership promises to revolutionise how Volvo customers engage and interact with their cars. The large catalogue of popular Android apps – developed by Google, Volvo, or third party app developers – will offer connected and predictive services in and around the car. “We are making an important strategic step with the Google partnership. Google’s platform and services will enhance the user experience by enabling more personalisation possibilities, while Android will offer increased flexibility from a development perspective,” said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group. Volvo Cars’ partnership with Google reflects the ongoing convergence between the automotive and technology industries

as cars become increasingly connected. Volvo believes smart partnerships are the future for the car industry. Using Android as the base operating system will increase speed and flexibility in the development and offer its customers the ability to personalise the connected in-car experience. “We’re thrilled to partner with Volvo to bring Android into their next generation connected cars,” said Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android Engineering at Google. “This partnership gives us the opportunity to deliver a more seamless experience to Volvo drivers through a full-featured infotainment platform and rich ecosystem of Android applications and Google services.” “With the advent of Android we will embrace a rich ecosystem while keeping our iconic Volvo user interface. We will offer hundreds of popular apps and the best integrated experience in this broad, connected environment,” said Henrik Green. Volvo is also collaborating with Google on another initiative to update recent Volvo models by adding Google Local Search, a location based service application. This will be released through an update to customers with Sensus Navigation.

Are Gasoline Engines Really Cheaper Than Hybrids?

Y

ou’ve eyed the sleek designs, read the reviews and reports, picked out the colour in your mind’s eye, and hit every auto mall within Saturday striking distance. Now, the decision about which new car to buy just comes down to sticker price, right? Not so fast. The true cost of owning a vehicle is more than what you pay to drive it off the lot – especially when comparing gasoline and hybrid models. Price vs. value Once the popular choice solely for highmileage cab drivers and eco-conscious commuters, hybrids — vehicles powered by both an electric motor and a conventional engine (gasoline or diesel) — have gone mainstream. Their fuel-sipping ways and cleaner-air emissions are appealing. And they’re good-looking, to boot. But when shopping for a new car, many consumers still bump up against a common misconception about hybrids: they’re too expensive. In fact, when hybrids are compared to strictly gasoline-fueled models, the prices are similar. For example, the Toyota Camry Hybrid has an MSRP of $31,585, while a comparably equipped gas-engine Camry XSE is $31,040. Hybrids also typically come decked out with Bluetooth connectivity, quality sound systems, upgraded interior materials and

components, and larger tires and rims. At the compact price point, the Toyota Prius c is the lowest-cost hybrid in Canada, starting at $23,790 (including freight and PDI). In the showroom, it’s true hybrids usually have a higher price affixed to the windshield than their gas-only counterparts. Outside the dealership, however, where the rubber hits the road, it’s important to evaluate the whole car-owning experience. In addition to asking price, relevant factors include retention values, cost of maintenance and repairs, fuel savings and environmental impacts of your new ride. Goodbye gas stations, hello open road For those who find fueling up a necessary annoyance, the extended time between gas station visits a hybrid provides will be a boon. After all, when a hybrid is running on the electric motor’s power, it consumes no fuel. According to consumer reports, most hybrid vehicles have better fuel economy than their gas-only counterparts, usually logging almost twice the kilometres to the tank. With gas prices continuing to rise in B.C., more people are choosing hybrids for their exceptional fuel efficiency alone. Protecting the planet The benefits of hybrids go beyond your personal use. By choosing a hybrid, which depends less on fossil fuels, you’ll be helping to reduce the demand and price of

gas in the domestic market. Another checkmark in the healthier Earth column are hybrids’ quieter ride and lower greenhouse gas emissions. A typical hybrid produces 90 per cent fewer tailpipe emissions, such as CO2, than a traditional vehicle. When operating in full electric mode, hybrids emit zero greenhouse gases. Frugal fixes Because of the way hybrid vehicles work, in addition to fuel savings, maintenance costs are usually lower than gas-only cars. Since the fuel-powered portion of the car shuts down at different times during operation, there is less wear and tear on the engine. The regenerative braking system, which uses the electric motor to help stop the car, extends the life of brakes. And fewer oil changes are required, with most oil changes recommended every 8,000 kilometres (hybrid) rather than 5,000 kilometres (regular). Hybrids on the market now also have generous battery warranties that run for eight to 10 years (or 160,000– 240,000 kilometres). The bottom line In the end, there are myriad benefits to purchasing a hybrid – and that includes buying into a smart investment. With gas prices continuing to rise in B.C. and more people choosing hybrids as a way to help both their wallets and the environment, one of the results is these vehicles are now commanding higher resale values. This year, the Toyota Prius c won the 2017 Canadian Black Book award for “Highest Retained Value”, taking over the top spot in its category from last year’s winner, the gas-powered Honda Fit. In general, the average vehicle depreciates in value by 65 per cent over five years, so even a few percentage points of difference can add up to big savings in the long term. Auto-makers are taking note of the shift and now offer a larger selection of hybrid vehicles. Last year in Canada, more than 30 different models of hybrids were available. Maybe it’s time for you to choose yours. Source: Times Colonist

his week, we had the chance to drive around within 3 seconds, so when you are driving in stop and go traffic, the in Infiniti’s new crossover, the QX30. It’s a car feels rough because you can feel it starting and stopping. What 4-cylinder turbo-charged AWD machine that is I would do to correct this is either up the time to a minute or two matched with a 7-speed automatic, with a manual so you don’t feel the engine turning off and on so much, or Infiniti mode. The Infiniti actually has Mercedes Benz figures out a means of improving how the engine is mounted so you architecture, based off of their GLA platform, a don’t feel it transmit into the cab. Thus, for me, I just preferred to practice not too uncommon between auto manufacturers; borrowing have this feature off. designs from a pre-existing vehicle then putting their own spin on it Visibility is decent all the way around. The roof line does come to make the vehicle their own. The QX30 is an interesting crossover down low and the rear-view mirror does take up a lot of space, not because it tries to play several roles in one vehicle. It has an AWD giving a ton of vision forward, but it is sufficient. Also, in the rear, the system and decent ground clearance to go off in mild off-road center passenger has a headrest which is good for safety and comfort, situations, but it also has the seating position and roof but it does block a lot of your view from behind, with line like a sports sedan and the hatchback like design the driver not really able to see vehicles in the rearin the rear where it can accommodate a decent amount view mirror. The HVAC controls are relatively simple of luggage. This vehicle definitely blurs the line of car/ and the radio controls are up high, which I like, since wagon/SUV, thus re-enforcing the crossover category. those are the controls a driver manipulates the most on Driving Impressions (6) a regular basis. With 208HP, 258 lb.-feet of torque and having I wasn’t able to test the QX30 off-road, but forced induction, you figure the QX30 is a fun little tried some hard acceleration pulls in the wet, and it vehicle. And it is. When the turbo spools up and the had plenty of grip. The vehicle was equipped with vehicle hits its power-band, it does not disappoint in dedicated winter tires, which would also help on the the acceleration department. I don’t think it was their slick roads. What I did like about the drivetrain was its Anthony Jarantilla intention to build a fast, straight line vehicle, but smoothness and ability to seamlessly transfer power. Vehicle Installation Manager with that much torque and having 7 gears, it moves Whether in a straight line or accelerating out of a Visions Electronics, Surrey surprisingly well. Even though it’s small, it’s not that corner, it was well composed and smooth. Sometimes light, weighing in at 4,277 lbs.; but it feels light on its I worry about vehicles that have a good amount of feet. The suspension has aluminium parts and is fully torque, but the driver constantly has to fight with independent, allowing the vehicle to conform to the road and really torque steer. Don’t get me wrong. I like wrestling with the steering take corners well. Also, being a smaller vehicle makes it very easy to wheel in some cars because I find it fun; but I find torque steer park in the city, especially with the 360-degree camera system. But irritating, which thankfully, the QX30 does not suffer from. after getting past that and driving the vehicle at city speeds, it begins Steering is precise but very light and vague. I’d prefer to feel a to annoy you in little ways. For example, the vehicle has an auto shut little more resistance getting more of a feel for the road. Also, the off feature that will shut off the motor when you come to a stop once paddle shifters attached to the steering wheel are nice that they rotate it is warmed up. What I don’t like about this system is that it engages with the wheel. But what I don’t like is that when you use them, they

feel more like pushing a button on a video game system. It would be a nicer touch to give it something more like a quarter inch throw, making it feel like I have to put a little more effort when using them. The performance is fun and pretty impressive, but its little driving quirks outweigh its performance. Safety (8) Our test QX30 definitely had a lot of features in the safety department. First, it came equipped with winter tires for the season, which I thought was a great idea, considering the unseasonable weather we’ve been having. Also, being a smaller, more nimble vehicle, it should be able to help drivers avoid accidents when it comes to manoeuvring around them. As far as other passive safety items, there are good size brakes and forward emergency braking to help avoid rear ending another motorist. The 360 degree camera and sonar system work very well, making parking a breeze. I did, however, encounter a little snow and got a warning message telling me the sensors were dirty; thus, they can be affected by the weather, so you have to be mindful of that. I did feel that light output from the factory LED’s was a little on the low side. I’m not sure if it needed to be aimed better, or the height of the vehicle played a factor, because the week prior I had a 2017 Pathfinder, with factory LED lights, and they seemed more sufficient. Like most modern vehicles, it has airbags pretty much everywhere, so it’ll turn into a bouncy castle in case things go wrong. Interior (8) Inside the QX30, the materials are higher end when compared to entry level SUV’s and crossovers. You start to see why you spend a little more money for something like this. I do like all the displays, as they’re easy to read and as far as basic functions, easy to manipulate. If you get deep into all the features and settings, you can sit in the vehicle for a while initially trying to learn everything. The sound system is decent. I do like the clarity and the balance of the higher frequencies and feeling the mid-range bass. On lower tones, the factory sub doesn’t sound sufficient to me and could definitely

improve from and aftermarket add-on. I think the interior can also benefit from some sound deadening to tighten up the sound system and reduce some road noise. Space wise, the vehicle is limited in some ways, which is understandable. Being a compact vehicle, you forgo some leg room space if occupants are over 5’10”. Also, because of the sleek roof line, you do lose a little bit of headroom. Cargo space is ample in the back and if there’s only 2 of you, you can fold the rear seats down, really opening it up. Styling (6) Styling is definitely a subjective preference. There are some appearance features that are really nice, like the lighting treatment and the indentation of the rear glass into the rear hatch – all very nice touches. I also like the plastic molding that runs along the fenders and the rocker, protecting the paint. The overall shape I’m not a big fan of. It still has that futuristic/spaceship look going on that a lot of consumers seem to be fond of. Call me old fashioned, but I think a traditional looking station wagon, if done right, looks better and is more practical. I think I would be more okay with the looks and could appreciate the lines of the vehicle if they put nicer wheels on. The wheels really look similar to the Korean auto manufacturers and Nissan and Infiniti have designed some really nice wheels in the past; I think this crossover can benefit from a more traditional 5-spoke concave design. If they made the wheels from the concept version standard, I would probably like the exterior styling a lot more. Conclusion: The QX30 delivers on performance and capability, but comes with some driving quirks. It’s practical and has styling that will appeal to a lot of people. Its compact size and full list of technology features will definitely satisfy buyers who want something that is reasonably fuel efficient, easy to park, can go on adventures with, and has the ability to pull decent on the highway making, for an entertaining drive. In the tight sub-compact category, definitely give the Infiniti QX30 a look.
