Looking Ahead...

W

Jag Dhatt Editor-in-Chief

ith the coming winter season, and upcoming New Year, it’s the right time to reflect on 2015 and see where there were successes, and where improvements can be made. We, at DRK Magazine and JGK Media, have had great feedback from our readers on where improvements can be made, and we do our best to implement those suggestions. One of the most important feedbacks we received was in regards to our coverage of vehicles. Our readers inquired why there seemed to be a slight lack of North American brands, specifically GMC. Being South-Asian, I know too well that the Cadillac models are one of the most sought after vehicles. In order to keep our readers happy, we’ve included the new CTS on the cover and is one of our feature stories, written by Zack Spencer. We are confident that GMC will allow DRK Magazine more access to the brand’s press fleets to give equal coverage to all brands. In September, DRK Magazine was invited to beautiful San Diego, California to be one of the first to drive the all-new 2016 Infiniti QX50. Read about our initial thoughts of this new crossover. In addition, read our take on the new 2015 Land Rover LR4 and Chris Chase’s impressions of the all-new MB GLE Coupe. September and October also saw many vehicle launches and events. We’ve included lots of pictures of many of these events. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our readers a very joyous, fun-filled and safe holiday season. See you all in 2016 and remember, like our Facebook page and visit www.rackandopinion.ca for regular reviews, events, and more.

NSX Causes Big Buzz at Tokyo Motor Show

Family Gets a Great Gift

M

ost major international car events, like the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, are filled with debuts, but probably none caused more excitement than the all-new Acura NSX. Just like its predecessors, the 2017 model is powered by a V6; but unlike previous models, this one churns out 573 hp. With a top speed of 191 mph, and thanks to the new Sport Hybrid Super Handling AWD, this beauty will be a driver’s dream.

Body Found in Burned Car in New West

N

ew Westminster police are investigating after a body was found in a burned out car in the last week of October. Details are few, but police say at about 6:45 p.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Fourth Avenue to assist the New Westminster Fire Department with a vehicle fire. They say after the fire was extinguished, a body was located in the vehicle. Police haven’t yet released an age or gender of the victim. Nor have they said whether the incident is suspicious. The NWPD Major Crime Unit is investigating and say more information will be released as it becomes available.

A

Saanich single mother already grateful for a car donated to her family by sympathetic strangers got more good news on Thursday. Victoria Speedy Auto has offered to repair or replace the brakes on Andrea Deman’s 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera free of charge. Deman’s life was thrown into turmoil on Sept. 24 when a runaway truck drove down an embankment and crashed into the deck of her Nigel Avenue townhouse, totalling her low-mileage 1991 Buick Century and terrifying her and her kids in the middle of the night. Deman was tearful at the news of the brake offer. “Oh my God, that’s amazing,” she said. For three weeks, Deman was late every day for her fulltime job as a cook at CFB Esquimalt because no buses could get her there on time for her 6:45 a.m. start, nor could she afford a new car with her $1,600 ICBC settlement. Speedy co-owner Mike Salkus said he “totally understood” her tough situation and volunteered his staff to do the brake work when Deman needs it. “We would be honoured to help out,” he said in an email to the Times Colonist after reading of Deman’s situation. A full brake job could cost up to $850, but $350 at a minimum, said Salkus, who bought the franchise in 2007 with his wife. The truck driver who totalled Deman’s car fled the scene in the middle of the night, then lied to Saanich police who tracked him down, saying his vehicle had been stolen. He later came forward and said he had fallen asleep at the wheel and panicked. He was fined $368 under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Honda Canada Inc. Achieves Best September Sales Since 2006

Volvo Cars Unveils Global Electrification Strategy

H

onda Canada Inc. reported an increase of 16 percent in September 2015, on sales of 17,441 units by the Honda and Acura divisions combined, breaking a nine-year-old record and surpassing 17,000 units sold for the third consecutive month. Honda reported September sales of 15,201 units, up 14 percent over last year. The Acura Division reported September sales of 2,240 units, up 35 percent over last year. Both divisions set alltime records for the month, attaining September sales unseen since 2006. “We are working hard to keep up with strong demand for our light trucks, as the versatile and functional CR-V and Pilot SUVs continue to alter the monthly record books,” said Dave Gardner, Senior VP of Operations, Honda Canada Inc. “The Honda Civic, Canada’s best-selling passenger car, sustains its push for an eighteenth consecutive year at the top, with another strong month in September. The Civic story will only get better, as we prepare to launch the next generation later this year with great anticipation.” “The innovative and dynamic RDX continues to boost Acura sales with its fifth consecutive month of recordsetting numbers. Both Acura sedan and SUV products reached double digit sales growth, proving the Acura brand is resonating with the Canadian luxury buyer,” said Gardner.

F-PACE Powers Through Loop

I

n September, Jaguar’s first family sports car defied gravity by performing a record-breaking 360-degree loop, one day ahead of its global motor show debut in Frankfurt. The power loop went viral on social media. Ian Callum, Director of Design for Jaguar said, “The F-PACE is an SUV with the soul of a sports car. When we created this car we thought differently; we took a Jaguar sports car and made it family friendly.” The extraordinary feat showcased the powerful design of the lightweight F-PACE and its ability to combine agility with sports car speed and performance. Pro Driver Terry Grant underwent two months of intense physical and dietary training to ensure his body was prepared for the 6.5 G-Force, which is greater than the forces experienced by space shuttle pilots. Said Grant, “Driving the world’s largest loop was a proud moment in my career.” 8

olvo Cars has announced one of the automotive industry’s most comprehensive electrification strategies in which plug-in hybrids will be introduced across its entire range. It will develop an entirely new range of electrified smaller cars and build a fully electric car for sale by 2019. As part of this new strategy, the Swedish car company said it expects electrified vehicles to account for up to 10 per cent of total car sales in the medium term. The first element of the new electrification strategy involves the introduction of plug-in hybrid versions of its 90 series and 60 series larger cars, based on the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture. This process has already begun with the launch of the T8 Twin Engine All-Wheel Drive plug-in hybrid version of its new XC90 SUV and will continue with plug-in hybrid versions of the new S90 premium sedan and other forthcoming models. Volvo Cars will also broaden the range of plug-in hybrid cars it offers with the introduction of a new front-wheel drive Twin Engine variant. The Swedish car maker will further deepen its product offering with the introduction of an entirely new range of smaller 40 series cars based on its newly-developed Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which, like SPA, has been designed from the outset for electrification. This makes Volvo Car Group one of very few car makers in the world with two brand new vehicle architectures designed to support both plug-in and pure electric powertrain configurations. Lastly, Volvo Cars has confirmed that it will build an all-electric car for sale by 2019. Further details of this planned model will be released at a later date.

GMC Canyon Wins Midsize Pickup Challenge

T

he all-new GMC Canyon was the top pick by the editors of Cars.com in a midsize pickup comparison test. The editors praised the Canyon SLT – the segment’s only premium entry – for its road manners and performance with a full load in the bed, as well as its design and “high-end materials,” in a side-byside challenge with Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Nissan Frontier PRO-4X. “The GMC Canyon scored well throughout our tests, and offered a capable and luxurious ride and feel that clearly separated the GMC from the rest of the pack,” said Cars.com Pickup Truck Editor Mark Williams. The trucks were tested for a range of capabilities, including performance, seating and ergonomics, tech and entertainment, ride quality, visibility, value and off-road capability. The trucks were track-tested for braking and acceleration performance, subjected to a true off-road course, and took part in a 320-kilometre-mile fuel-consumption evaluation. Additionally, a pickup truck shopper unaffiliated with Cars.com tested each of the trucks for overall ride, comfort and features. “Establishing a benchmark for a premium mid-size pickup was our goal with the Canyon and pickupTruck.com’s insights affirm our instincts,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “The Canyon’s quiet cabin, premium design and materials make it a maneuverable solution for customers who want the capability of a pickup with the modern amenities customers expect from GMC.” In addition to Cars.com’s recognition, Canyon

was named Autoweek’s Best of the Best Truck for 2015. Canyon in Canada starts at $20,600, plus a $1,695 destination freight charge and is available in four-door extended- or crew-cab models. It offers the segment’s best horsepower and fuel consumption rating: 200

horsepower (149 kW) and 8.8 L/100km highway (2WD) from a standard 2.5L I-4; and 305 horsepower (227 kW) and 9.6 L/100km (2WD) from an available 3.6L V-6. Canyon V-6 models offer a segment-leading maximum trailering rating of 3,175 kilograms (7,000 lbs), as well as the G80 locking rear differential, for surefooted traction in slippery conditions and when trailering.

S

an Diego, CA: The information package from Infiniti said it all: the new QX50 has, “the body of a crossover, [but] the heart of a coupe.” That’s a pretty bold statement to make about this, or any, vehicle in this category, and one I was anxious to explore. So, when I was invited to beautiful San Diego to drive the newest iteration of Infiniti’s compact SUV family, how could I resist. November / December 2015

I did find and “QX” branding may not be popular strange the three vertical strips on the passenger side with people who were used to the “G” dashboard – no clear purpose and in my opinion, takes status, sales numbers tell a completely away from the look. Most buyers won’t mind though. different story. Over the past 3 years, The infotainment system is similar the one in other Infiniti sales numbers have been consistently increasing, Infiniti models and performs well. The best part is the so much so that you can see it on the roads. The new 360-degrees surround camera system – Infiniti was the QX50, which is pretty much a refreshed and updated EX37, is a welcome addition. For 2016, the front has first to offer this technology and I think it’s one of the best innovations for any vehicle. a lower fascia, new LED lights, and a great-looking new grille, which is similar to its older siblings. The So does this crossover actually drive like a coupe? The most apparent upgrade is open up the engine. Infiniti has kept the 3.7L V-6 that with its size: it’s now 113mm longer, which results in pumps out 325-hp and in my opinion, it’s the perfect powerplant a 109mm increase for rear legroom (100mm more knee room). for this vehicle. 2016 Infiniti QX50

After about 64 miles, we stopped at Julian Pie Company to enjoy the area’s best pie. One of my colleagues scraped his plate clean; he said the pie was that good. During the break, we explored the QX50 a little more. The cargo area is abundant and as a new-class first, power folding rear seats, a feature normally found in higher-end models. Flip a switch to fold or raise the 60/40 rear seats; I did find, however, that at times, the rear seat belts got stuck in the latch when the seats were fully raised, making me lower them again and then manually keep the belt away. Getting back to the cargo area, I guarantee that, with the rear seats in the upright position (i.e. not folded), the QX50 will hold a full-size stroller and some luggage as well. After the pit stop, my driving partner Neil Vorano took the pilot’s seat and I had a chance to explore the crossover/coupe some more. I found the seats, heated of course, to be quite comfortable, considering we spent close to 6 hours in them. For Canada, only AWD will be available whereas US buyers can choose from either AWD or rear-wheel. Since we were able to drive both, Neil and I both agreed that the AWD had slightly more body roll, but that being said, it doesn’t take away from the driving experience. For Canadian buyers, the AWD will provide the necessary traction that they have come to expect from Infiniti for our weather patterns. You have to hand it to Infiniti for providing great venues for vehicle launches. Journalists were treated to lunch at the uber-trendy and posh Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa, where only luxury vehicle owners need apply. After our meals, Neil and I headed back towards San Diego, passing lime orchards, a place where we just had to stop….to, you know, test the all-wheel drive functionality. Once we got the thumbs-up from the farmer tending the orchard, we made our way amidst the lime trees and took some great photos. And a few limes didn’t hurt either. The final leg of the test drive took us through some urban areas, the coastline, and finally back to our hotel in downtown San Diego. I can honestly say that the new QX50 will likely make a presence in the Canadian market; the vehicle has a great engine, a luxurious interior, and the build quality you would expect from Infiniti. So, in the end, does the 2016 QX50 have the body of a crossover and the heart of a coupe – you bet!

Editor’s Update: After spending a week with the new 2016 QX50 in Vancouver, my expectations of the vehicle have either been met or surpassed. The rear seat might be a little cozy for some, but my daughters and wife said they were pleased with the room. And yes, our full-size stroller easily fits in the cargo area!

t’s been 25 years since the Lexus LS 400 arrived in Canada in 1990. This vehicle truly redefined the expectations of the current luxury vehicle market. cost of 1 billion dollars, it was ready to be premiered with its V8 engine and far superior luxury features. By 1991 the Lexus LS had won “Canadian Car of the Year”. OpenRoad Richmond Lexus opened its doors in October of 1990 with humble beginnings, sharing a showroom with Richmond Toyota. Over the past 25 years, we have proudly grown from 5 employees to a staff of 65 associates working out of a stateof-the-art LEED certified facility which Lexus recognizes as the Canadian flagship. Art of Lexus, to celebrate our 25 years. We hosted just over 500 guests for an evening of the Arts. The design and preciseness that goes into each design of a new Lexus vehicle is nothing short of pure art. From the handstitched steering wheel and dash board to the perfected painting process, each vehicle is finished to perfection. Joining us in the celebration was local Artist Charlie Easton, who created breath taking pieces of artwork that was auctioned off for our charity, OpenRoad Cares. Our Guests were served signature “Lexus” cocktails and were treated to delicious canapes’ by one of our local favourites “Cocktails and Canapes”. It truly was an amazing night filled with celebration and gratitude for the last 25 years. Thank you to all of our loyal Lexus guests.

2015 Landrover LR4

2015

LAND ROVER

LR4

T

he Land Rover LR4 2015 is notably one of the most premium, efficient, and versatile SUVs out there today, and is best suited for consumers who are prone to take advantage of the great outdoors. If road trips and lengthy drives are your thing, look no further than the Land Rover LR4 2015. It can fit seven people comfortably with its stadium seating features, and ensures everybody gets picturesque and unobstructed views of whatever adventures you’ve set out on. The outward visibility from the front seats is particularly great. It is also equipped with a broad array of infotainment and technologies to keep guests comfortable and entertained. With exceptional trail capabilities and unsurpassed interior comfort, it’s the quintessential SUV for those who love the great outdoors as well as large families. It doesn’t matter if you’re going camping or taking the kids to hockey, the spaciousness of this SUV will enable a comfortable ride for all. Of course, keeping in consideration that the third row is suitable only for children. Equipped with a 340 HP, 30.0-liter V-6, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the vehicle is just as adaptable to city life just as it is to the great outdoors. The LR4 is exceptionally well suited to off-road driving, whilst maintaining high levels of comfort and driving positions. The LR4 combines all the quintessential off-road SUV elements without compromising on its fundamental British character. Needless to say, the LR4 is a proper representation of the values of the designers and engineers that have created them. Add to that a super charging, dualindependent variable cam timing along with a high compression ratio, the LR4 stands out from its competitors in the league. The new V6 motor is a gem, and provides exceptional and efficient power minus the V8. An additional incredible feature of the LR4 is the intelligent Stop/Start System designed to enhance fuel efficiency and decrease emissions. A warning signal lights up on the instrument panel to indicate the stoppage of the vehicle, making it super eco efficient and environmentally friendly. Moreover, due to the 8-speed electronic automatic transmission, the engine is always at the optimal system to decrease fuel consumption. The LR4’s cabin is also state-of-the-art and exceptionally comfortable for all passengers in the front and second rows, despite their height. The cabin filters out most external wind and road noise, adding to the comfort level and overall enjoyment. This is an unexpected feat, taking into consideration the truck-like appearance of the Land Rover LR4. An overall comfortable and efficient drive and interior with a great balance of design and practicality. The LR4, despite its magnificence, is not exempt from a few flaws and errors. For example, the cup holders for second row passengers are extremely stiff, and the infotainment system falls short of what should be expected of a luxury brand. But it does come with all the standard features such as Bluetooth, Rearview Camera, rear parking sensors and a USB port. 18

here is a saying that an ounce of pre-framing is worth a pound of reframing. I have seen too many companies fall apart from shareholder disputes affecting many innocent loved ones. When it comes to shareholders having a vested interest within any profit generating structure having a shareholder agreement in place should become a mandate for many companies. The majority of small and medium sized businesses do not take the time to put together a shareholder agreement that is legally binding. Often citing lack of time and saving on a few dollars the cost in the long run can come back to haunt them. I recently provided some advice to a local mid-size business here in the Lower Mainland and worked on some of the nuances of their shareholder agreement along with the lawyer. They were extremely grateful with the taxation considerations and legal implications that were mitigated by effectively wording their agreement. In the end it will save them headaches and cash. Not to be confused with a company’s Articles, shareholder agreements provide a clear and concise outline of agreed terms that individual shareholders abide too. Often well defined roles, responsibilities and functions of each shareholder position are laid out preventing disputes. Designated rights and restrictions regarding authorities among shareholder classifications can furthermore be outlined within agreements. Once signed, these agreements become a legal contract that holds weight if disputes arise. While there are no legal requirements to enter shareholder agreements there are however, aspects of the agreement that must follow cited governing laws within a 20

In Your Corner company’s region. Utilized to define expectations among the position of shareholders responsibilities these agreements can serve as a bypass from the need for disputes to be mediated or requiring legal intervention based on governing laws. The benefit of this is meant to provide both parties a clear understanding of terms that uphold the interest of each side. Mandating shareholder agreements as policy provides the proof of ownership percentage when in question or in need of authorizing transfers, sale and valuation of shares, rights and provisions, exit clauses, life insurance and business succession. Dispute resolution is clearly a reason for wanting to maintain records regarding shareholder agreements as they can document fiscal arrangements and director employment conditions over time. Working with an experienced Chartered Professional Accountant and a corporate lawyer to establish the guidelines of a shareholder agreement is best advised from the beginning as there are numerous taxation and legal implications. These trusted advisors can clearly help provide the terms and condition applicable to the governing region of the business.

haron Rupal, who was born and raised in Quesnel, BC, has been a part of the retail business world since she was 15 years old, beginning her career with the Hudson’s Bay Company. Nine years ago, when approached by the OpenRoad Auto Group, Sharon knew it was the right time to make the move. “It seemed like a wonderful opportunity as I had heard some really great things about the company,” recalls Rupal. After coming on board as Director of Human Resources, a position she held for 8 years, Rupal made the transition to General Manager of Infiniti Langley in 2014. As one of the few female general managers in the automotive industry, Rupal works tirelessly to ensure that her team provides the best customer service to anyone who walks through the boutique retail centre’s doors. “We want to ensure that we service our customers properly after they purchase their car,” says Rupal, who believes that customer retention is the key to success in the automotive industry. As a general manager, she talks and connects with her team on a daily basis to better understand the needs of their guests. Rupal admits she really likes her job, as does her 15-year old son, who can’t wait to get his driver’s licence.

s with many others in the industry, Rahim Jamal is the product of hard work and dedication. Realizing his love for automobiles at a young age, Jamal began as a lot attendant at a Toyota dealership in Calgary, Alberta. Within a short amount of time, he acquired a sales position with Mazda. His supervisors quickly saw that Jamal not only had a knack for selling cars, but also how to potentially be a manager. With solid sales numbers, Jamal became a manager at the same Toyota dealership at which he used to be a lot attendant. Beginning in 2012, the young professional ran the dealership and took sales numbers to new heights. “As a manager, I saw myself as a coach, motivating and providing the right training to our sales teams,” says Jamal. In 2014, came a tough decision – Jamal was offered the Sales Manager position at Mercedes-Benz Langley, a new state-of-the-art dealership. “Having worked with luxury brands, I decided it was the move to make and relocate to Vancouver,” he said. Now into his second year at MB Langley, Jamal’s goals are to provide the best customer experience to all customers. “It’s not important to just have a customer, but have a customer for life – that tells us we did a good job.”

HELPERS Pamela Alspach

Mehul Gandhi

M

amela’s journey in the automotive industry began 4 years ago. Eager to return to work after her maternity leave, Pamela wanted a change and a timely opportunity presented itself. “I’ve been a BMW driver for years and there was a new BMW/MINI Langley dealership that was being built very close to my house,” recalls Alspach. To get her foot in the door, she began as a part-time receptionist. Very quickly, however, she rose to Lead Receptionist; quickly after that, her role expanded to helping at the business office, selling cars, acting as a service advisor, and eventually, Assistant Service Manager. Alspach admits her love for the automotive business comes from dealing with people – including fellow employees and customers. But her true passion is creating the best guest experience within the dealership. With her alpha personality in top gear, Alspach made the move to OpenRoad Lexus in Richmond as the new Business Development Manager, where she works with both the service and sales departments in finding ways to improve the customer experience. “I love coming to work,” says Alspach, “and I am always looking at new and innovative ways to build a whole new customer experience because yesterday’s exception is now today’s expectation.”

ehul Gandhi was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and came to Canada when he was 4 years old. After living all across Canada, he settled in BC, which he now calls home. Mehul’s educational background is in science, more specifically, cognitive psychology. His real passion, though, is developing relationships with, mentoring, and motivating industry sales professionals. Mehul currently leads a team of dynamic professionals who provide top notch financial advice to members of our community. Along with his management team, he is committed to providing driven individuals with the support and training to create and maintain a successful financial practice. Always humble, Mehul credits the development of this mind set to his mentor, Rohini Kapoor, a 25 year plus veteran in the financial services industry, and the managing director of Mehul’s office. He utilizes that mentorship on a daily basis to develop his team into financial professionals who are making a positive impact in their communities. He is always excited to meet driven individuals who may want to find out more about the financial industry. Mehul’s vision for the future is to continue developing his team in both Victoria and the Mainland into professionals who strive to make a positive impact in their clients’ lives.

Eating with Pash-ion

I

f I can choose just two words to sum up my visit to Trattoria Burnaby, they would be “Never Again!” This was one of the worst experiences I have had at any restaurant anywhere in the world that I have visited. I had a reservation and had to wait for 15 minutes before I was finally seated. They don’t seem to understand the word “reservation”. It means a table is ready for you when you arrive, which was NOT the case. When they took my dinner companion and myself to the table, it was the most horrendous site I had ever seen! A tiny squashed table in between two large parties and only a few inches in between the tables. I could not even squeeze in between the table to get to the seat it was so cramped. I immediately refused the table and was told the only available table was outside in the dark and cold of October. I took the frigid table and was greeted by the side show of the police pulling a vehicle over in front of me. Nice ambience with the red and blue lights flashing in the freezing cold. No bread or anything was brought to the table and I sat for a full fifteen minutes with nothing to drink. When they finally came to take a drink order, the waiter again disappeared for 10 minutes and “claimed” he did bring drinks to an empty table and again disappeared. I was beyond angry.

EATING WITH PASH-ION

November / December 2015

Pash Brar Mobile Leasing Rep. at Auto One Leasing LP

We ordered a Caesar and a caprese salad to start even though i wanted to leave. My Caesar salad had an unwelcome addition added, basil! Who adds basil to Caesar salad??? I hated the flavour, but my friends caprese salad was the worst. There was no basil, which is an essential ingredient, and no balsamic vinegar. All he had was a bit of olive oil on the bottom of the plate. No salt, no pepper and the blandest mozzarella made of cow’s milk instead of buffalo. It was disgusting and inedible! No one even offered fresh cracked pepper ! For dinner we ordered spaghetti and meatballs and a meat lasagna. We were at least offered some fresh parmesan cheese. But the meat lasagna was watery and tasteless and very acidic. It needed sugar to neutralize the tomatoes. I’ve had better lasagna at Boston Pizza! My spaghetti was way over cooked and nowhere near al dente. The meatballs were greasy and gave me a headache. For dessert I ordered Torta al Cioccolato al Latte. which is a flourless chocolate torte. The best part was the tiny white chocolate garnish on top and the pieces of milk chocolate attached as decoration. The dessert furthered my already existing headache and added sugar sweats. With such horrible food and even worse service, I was determined to leave zero as a tip, but my friend went inside and paid for the bill behind my back and gave a small tip. Even that small tip was not deserved. I will never set foot inside this restaurant again, or the other locations in Kitsilano or Park Royal. i would rather go hungry than eat anything offered from their menu, even if it was for free.

2017 Jaguar F-PACE

W

hat can I say about the all-new F-PACE except that it’s a gorgeous SUV by Jaguar – yes, you read that correctly, Jaguar now has an SUV. The F-PACE takes the Jaguar DNA of legendary performance, handling and luxury, and adds practicality and space. From a design perspective, the F-PACE has beautiful lines that are borrowed from its sibling cars – things such as the hood bulge to the pronounced rear haunches just ooze speed. The technologically advanced F-PACE is a performance SUV with maximum driving exhilaration. With the choice of three engine options, there’s one for every driver. My personal choice would be the 380 hp supercharged V6, which is borrowed from the F-Type. The F-PACE also delivers state-of-the-art technology to make sure you stay entertained and connected at all times. There is ample space for the long road trips or weekend getaways. There’s even clever storage compartments for smart phones and tablets on the sides of the center console. F-PACE has the performance for every road and the capacity for every day. A Jaguar for the driver, a Jaguar for the active lifestyle.

F

orty years after the unveiling of Ferrari’s first ever mid-rearengined V8 berlinetta, the 308GTB, the Prancing Horse now opens a new chapter in its 8-cylinder history. We first saw the 488GTB at its official BC launch at Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver, and as a journalist, there something about Ferrari that just makes me grin from ear to ear. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the 488GTB features very sculptural flanks, which define its character, and it’s all about speed. At the front are dual grille openings which feed air into two radiators. There’s also a double front spoiler while at the centre are two pylons that are combined with a deflector to channel air towards the flat underbody. The tail is dominated by a blown spoiler to help with aerodynamics while the new tailpipes have been repositioned to accommodate the new diffuser. At the heart of the 488GTB is a 661hp V-8 turbo that sprints the car from 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds flat. We can go and on about the car, but there’s nothing like the feeling of actually driving one, which we hope to very soon.

2016 Suzuki DR650S

I

f you’ve ever been torn between paved roads and wilderness trails, then the new Suzuki DR650S might just be your poison. This dual-sport is designed to conquer less than ideal conditions while providing comfort on the street, control off the beaten path, and full command everywhere in between. This Suzuki is powered by a compact 644cc SOHC, four-stroke, air and oil cooled engine that is tuned with an emphasis on performance in the low-to-mid RPM range. The stainless steel exhaust is perfect for our BC weather as it won’t corrode and cause needless stress for owners. The height adjustable shock features adjustable spring preload and compression damping to personalize the suspension for rider, load and terrain. Now, while this bike may not win any enduros or cross-country races, nor be the lightest, it has a noticeably faster, torquier, and smoother engine when comparing to its competitors. According to those who have owned the bike, it’s pretty much bulletproof and will last years and take lots of abuse. 26

2016 Nissan Maxima

W

hen a car makes its debut during NFL game time, you know it’s a big deal. The all-new 2016 Nissan Maxima is a vehicle that has experienced a great deal of success since its debut in 1981, when it was labelled as the first four-door sports car. While many don’t call the 2016 model a real sports car, it does have some dramatic styling (Nissan is really getting good here), a very comfortable interior, and a motor that is spectacular. But, I do have a gripe – it’s not with the motor but with fact that it’s paired with a CVT. This 3.5 L V6 deserves to be matched with gears. That being said, this CVT is pretty darn good and gets the car moving quite quickly. Getting back to the cabin, it’s roomy, as is the trunk. The seats are very supportive and can be fitted with the cooled and heated package. The drive of the new Maxima is surprisingly good; it is a credible luxury vehicle, but opt for the sport setting and use manual shifting, and it also make a pretty good “sports” car.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

GLE MERCEDES-BENZ COUPE 2016

T

here aren’t many vehicles that can do it all for any driver, but a few automakers are taking a shot at creating crossovers that come close. The latest to join the quest for the all-in-one is MercedesBenz, whose GLE Coupe was conceived to compete with the likes of BMW’s X4 and X6 and Infiniti’s QX70 for crossover and SUV drivers unwilling to give up either standout looks or entertaining performance. Called a crossover coupe, the GLE Coupe is a fourdoor based on the GLE SUV (previously known as the M-Class), but with a tapered roofline that trades some interior space for styling that more closely resembles a tall sports car. While Benz isn’t blazing any new trails appearancewise, the GLE Coupe’s diesel engine (standard in the entry-level GLE 350d) sets it apart from its competitors, which run all-gasoline powertrains. The diesel makes this the most efficient vehicle in its class, but it feels out of place in a vehicle whose extroverted 28

look commands something more than the 3.0-litre turbodiesel’s 249 hp can deliver. Its 457 lb-ft of torque is certainly notable, and while it makes for impressive off-the-line punch, this motor loses its performance lustre at higher revs and road speeds. The 3.0-litre turbocharged gasoline V6 used in the GLE 450 AMG is a better match. This isn’t a true high-performance AMG model (we’ll get to that shortly), but the label fits with this engine’s 362 hp, 384 lb-ft of torque, and higher-revving nature. Much of that torque is available at low engine speeds, but there’s more power available closer to redline, making hard acceleration much more satisfying. The diesel is a fine fit in the more staid GLE, but the 450 AMG’s (so named for AMG-inspired styling elements and “performance-enhancing” technology) motor makes more sense. There is a real AMG model available in the GLE 63 S, powered by a turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 good for 577 hp and 561 lb-ft. Mercedes didn’t bring any

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

examples of it to the launch event in Newfoundland where we got our first taste of the GLE Coupe, but it’s no stretch to imagine it’s a potent machine.

Potency is what you need in a heavy luxury crossover: the diesel model weighs 2,220 kg — the GLE 450 carries around 30 kg more — and it feels that way. All of the cars we drove had Benz’s air suspension (optional in the 350d but standard in 450 and AMG 63 versions), and it was easy to appreciate the ability to adjust ride stiffness via the Agility Select system: ride quality is good in the ‘comfort’ setting, while the ‘sport’ and ‘sport+’ options are best reserved for smooth pavement. Those latter two do improve lazy throttle and transmission responses obviously tuned for economy in ‘comfort’ mode. Aiding performance is Mercedes’ new nine-speed automatic transmission. Nine speeds sounds like a lot, but with this gearbox Benz joins the ranks of Jeep, Chrysler, Land Rover, and Acura in offering this many ratios. It acquits itself well here: in diesel models, it does a good job of shifting frequently but smoothly to keep that engine in the middle of its relatively narrow torque band. Likewise, in the racier 450 AMG, the narrow gaps between ratios ensure the gas motor stays on the boil in hard acceleration.

The GLE Coupe’s fuel consumption ratings are 10.4/8.2 L/100 km (city/highway) in the 350d, and 13.6/10.2 in the 450 AMG. In our hands, after a few hours of mostly highway driving, the diesel averaged about 9.5 L/100 km, while the gas model managed around 11.0, both figures coming from the car’s trip computer. The GLE 63 AMG is the thirstiest of them all with ratings of 17.2/12.8 L/100 km (city/highway), but if you can afford a 577-hp, $116,500 SUV, we’d guess economy is not your top concern. Speaking of cost, the more attainable GLE Coupe models start at $72,300 for the 350d ($9,100 more than the equivalent GLE SUV), and $77,600 for the 450 AMG. Those figures, of course, don’t include options, of which there are many. Several of the boxes to be ticked on the order sheet are for safety features, like an Intelligent Drive package that includes active cruise control with steering assist, blind spot warning, and an active lanekeeping system that helps an inattentive driver stay in their lane. This last feature’s interventions are anything but subtle (we suppose that’s the point), which is disconcerting if, say, you crowd the left side of your lane to make room for a car stopped on a highway shoulder. In GLE 450 AMG trim, an Active Curve Assist option adds electronic sway bars that limit body roll in corners, and then can disconnect from the wheels to make the suspension more compliant on rough roads. A lower roofline relative to the regular GLE means less headroom, but that only affects rear seat passengers in any significant way; all five of the Coupe’s seats are usable by adults, if not particularly tall ones. Likewise, the cargo area is a lot shallower under that rakish tailgate, but the space is long; the Coupe’s high rear bumper has a greater effect on everyday practicality, as you have to lift stuff up and over it to get it inside. Stylistically, the GLE Coupe isn’t for everyone; this is a ‘lifestyle’ vehicle with a limited appeal that Mercedes-Benz hopes will expand its reach beyond buyers of traditional luxury sedans and SUVs. Success won’t be determined by sales numbers, but rather on the effect it has on its maker’s reputation. Performance-wise, there’s no question that effect will be positive (aside from the ho-hum diesel engine); the real question is how many shoppers out there will warm to the way this car’s controversial appearance stands out from the luxury-car crowd.

Gearing up for Winter

Gearing up for Winter

T

he cold months are upon us, and now is a good time to prepare your vehicle for the upcoming temperature drops. Besides winter tires, changing the fluids and wiper blades, your vehicle’s electrical system can use some love, too. For the average driver (travelling approx. 22,000KM a year), your car battery should be changed every 4 to 5 years. When batteries are on their way out, they don’t really give any warning signs. Usually what happens is, on a cold winter day or night you get in your vehicle and when you try to start it, it will either really struggle to start or, it just won’t start. This is because when a battery is on its last stage, it is most susceptible to damage in the summer months due to heat. Extreme heat conditions are a battery’s enemy; however, during those summer months, there isn’t a need of much cold cranking amps (CCA) to start your vehicle. It’s during the winter months where the CCA’s are needed and that’s when a worn battery shows its age, when you need it the most. So the rule of thumb is to change your vehicle’s battery every 4 to 5 years. Remote starters are another great item to have for colder months, if installed and used properly. The main thing about a remote starter is the convenience factor. You can safely start your vehicle from the comfort of being inside (provided the car is parked outside). The best way to use a remote starter is to let the car idle just long enough so the fluids can move in the engine and also, you’re not sitting in a cold car waiting or leaving the keys in the ignition while you wait inside. I do not recommend idling a car excessively with the remote starter though because excessive idling is bad for the motor and wastes fuel. Just use it long enough to get everything going, then drive the car nice and easy until it gets up to operating temperature. A remote starter unit is also great for 32

Gearing up for Winter turbo application vehicles, as it can double as a turbo timer. When a turbo vehicle is run hard, the oil that circulates in the turbo can get very hot, and it’s not advisable to just shut down the vehicle immediately. Most manufacturers recommend the vehicle idle for a short period of time to allow the oil to circulate and cool down. The remote starter can do this for you; that way, the vehicle can idle locked, and it will shut down after the amount of time you set it to, and you can go about your business. Finally, upgrading the ground wires under the hood might be worthwhile too. You can purchase “grounding kits” online or have them custom made in a shop like mine. This is a controversial upgrade as it is hard to measure its effects on the vehicle once it has been installed. Typically, the ground wires are added from motor to chassis, and battery to chassis on top of, or by replacing, the factory ground wires. This upgrade is more noticeable on older cars where the wiring is older and may have corrosions or is possibly fraying. I do this to all my vehicles as a measure of preventative maintenance. By making sure all the grounds are good, I know that all the electronics are receiving the correct amount of voltage for them to operate better. This could mean, easier starting, less head light dimming, smoother idle, etc. Make sure you don’t wait until it’s too late, and prepare yourself and your vehicle for the upcoming winter months.

Digestive Enzymes

T

hese little gems are a necessity for life and existence. Enzyme’s offer assistance in breaking down all the things that contribute to growth and energy from food. Simply putwe need them. When following such strict diet protocols, when one is allowed to indulge in a rich food meal, or perhaps unknown family prepared foods, and restaurant eating which usually consists of things that you have not been regularly eating, digestive enzymes help ease the discomfort of bloating, gas and the overall feeling of “yuck” and fullness which will likely occur. Many formulas are available to assist the breakdown of fats, protein, and carbohydrates (complex and simple). Antacids are a band-aid to stomach problems and can leach out other vitamins and minerals, rather than what is required, which is to assist the breakdown the foods and encourage nutrient uptake. The formulas I suggest are designed to work with the foods you most regularly eat, Vegetarians would suit the needs of a starch and vegetarian based formula. For meat eatersProtease and pancreatin based formulas. All things considered, pharmacy’s have an “old school” product that works wonders and, is very inexpensive, Beano works to help breakdown, beans (as its name implies) oatmeal, and other grains, lettuce, and broccoli. It’s great to have this handy at all times and works fast, and immediately goes to work. A closer look at supplemental enzymes and their actions. Nissan Conducts First On-Road Test of Prototype Vehicle Featuring Piloted Drive on Highway and City/Urban Roads

N

issan maintains two corporate visions of a sustainable mobile society: “Zero Emission” and “Zero Fatality.” For Zero Emission, the company’s goal is to eliminate the emission of CO2 gasses from Nissan vehicles; while Zero Fatality is an aspirational goal that aims to eliminate virtually all fatalities stemming from traffic accidents. “Vehicle Intelligence” will play a key role in realizing the concept of Zero Fatality; therefore, the company is developing an advanced form of vehicle intelligence called “Nissan Intelligent Driving,” which is comprised of various innovative features that will be introduced in stages. For Stage One, Nissan will offer “Piloted Drive 1.0” by the end of 2016 in Japan. Piloted Drive 1.0 allows for autonomous driving under heavy highway traffic conditions. By 2018, the company hopes to implement a multiple lane piloted drive that can conduct lane changes on highways. And by 2020, a new technology will be introduced that allows vehicles to successfully manage city/urban roads- including intersectionsautonomously. The prototype vehicle making its public debut today will be tested in actual traffic conditions on both the highway and city/urban roads to develop and further enhance Nissan Intelligent Driving for public use. The vehicle is based on the Nissan LEAF electric vehicle and it is equipped with features such as a millimeter wave radar, laser scanners, cameras, high-speed computer chips, and a specialized HMI (Human

Machine Interface), just to name a few. All of this helps allow the vehicle to operate in an autonomous manner on both highway and city/urban roads except for setting destination points into the navigation system. These tests are planned for Japan as well as overseas in the near future. Nissan has developed two innovative technologies that can make piloted drive possible on city/urban roads. The first is the miniature, high-spec laser scanner. Currently in its prototype stages, the laser scanner determines the distance between the vehicle and its surroundings through the use of precise three-dimensional measurement that enables the vehicle to navigate routes in tight spaces. The other new technology is an 8-way 360-degree view camera system that allows for accurate routing decisions when driving through intersections and sharp curving roads. The new prototype vehicle possesses both of these innovative features, facilitating smooth transportation through complex traffic environments, helping the occupants feel as though they are in the hands of a skilled driver. “We at Nissan are setting clear goals and preparing for the implementation of piloted drive. The prototype that we’re introducing here today is proof of how close we are towards the realization of this goal. Nissan aspires for a safe and trouble-free motoring future, and we plan on leading the industry in the implementation of piloted drive,” Senior Vice President of Nissan, Takao Asami, said.

good, but feel less than luxurious. Drive With a lighter car comes a better performing car, but the heart of any luxury, performance car is a solid engine. On this front, Cadillac offers three options and all three have more power than the closest competitors. The first is the same 2.0L turbocharged engine used the ATS. With 272hp it is well above the 240hp offered in the BMW 528i. The carryover engine is the direct injection 3.6L V6 with 321hp, again more then the 300hp in the 535i. The Vsport model, with a twin turbocharged version of the 3.6L engine, puts out 420hp. You guessed it, more power then the 400hp found in the V8 550i. The Vsport is only sold as a rear wheel drive car (RWD) where all the others are available with all wheel drive (AWD). The catch is that RWD models come with an 8-speed automatic transmission but the AWD versions are fitted with a 6-speed unit. (Lexus does this with its IS cars too.) The steering offers good feedback to the driver and the suspension is smooth, yet lively, and has a nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution. When a CTS is ordered with 18 or 19-inch wheels, it is equipped with the advanced magnetic ride control for improved ride and handling.

Verdict The price of the 2015 Cadillac CTS ranges from about $50,630 for the base model to $66,780 for the top premium trim level. The Vsport, high performance model is priced at almost $77,710. As you can see, a Cadillac CTS is not an inexpensive car, but it offers a lot of features like standard heated and vented leather seats, Bose stereo, and push button start, even on the base model. Compared to some of the other mid-sized luxury sedans, like the Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5-Series, this new CTS is less expensive, plus it is a worthy car for any driving enthusiast. Cadillac has a long and storied past. Sure, it has had bumps along the way, but the attention to detail and refinement is paying off.
