or many readers, the September to June routine has once again started with kids heading back to school. School and playground zones are in full effect and we ask all drivers and riders to SLOW DOWN in these zones. So many times, I see drivers blow through playground zones – this is just a ticking time bomb. Summer is always a busy time for auto journalists as there are many new launches. DRK Magazine was invited to the Media Launch Event for the new Mitsubishi Outlander in beautiful Whistler, BC. With over 100 changes made, this vehicle may be just the right fit for you. In late September, our editor has been invited to the international launch of the new Infiniti QX50 in sunny San Diego, California – should be another fabulous event. In this issue, Chris Chase gives his opinions on the new Mercedes C400 and one of our new writers, Ron Dhaliwal, talks about the pocket-rocket Ford Focus ST. For the two-wheel enthusiasts, see if the new Suzuki GSX-S750 fits the bill. We also have our regular columnists who provide their expertise. Summer also saw the growth of our family as we welcomed baby girl Gurmehar to the world. And thanks to Fiat Chrysler Canada, we kept our family tradition alive by bringing her, just like her older sisters, home in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Send us your feedback and opinions of DRK Magazine. Also, please visit www.rackandopinion.ca for updated reviews. Remember to find us on Facebook at DRK Desi Road Kings Magazine.

August Still Strong Month for CDN Auto Sales

Floyd Mayweather Buys $4.8M Car
N
ew vehicle sales in Canada totalled 175,512 in August, up 2.2 per cent from 171,703 a year ago, extending a run of record sales fuelled mainly by light trucks. According to industry sales numbers compiled by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, light truck sales totalled 110,890 for August, up 10 per cent from 100,764 in August 2014. The gain in trucks wiped out the fall in car sales, which slipped to 64,622, down eight per cent from 70,939 a year ago. General Motors Co.’s Canadian sales jumped 12 per cent in August and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s edged up 0.4 per cent, while Ford sales slowed five per cent from the previous year. The mixed results from the biggest automakers reflected the usual slowdown in sales in the summer, when people are on vacation, albeit in a year when demand for new vehicles is strong. GM bounces back GM’s truck sales jumped 14.6 per cent and its car sales were up 3.2 per cent for a total of 24,653 vehicles sold in Canada, up from 22,111 a year earlier. GM appears to have thrown off the taint of its massive recall campaign and won over drivers with a new crop of trucks with the GMC’s pickup truck sales up 28 per cent for the month. Chevrolet sales for the month of August were up 12 per cent driven by sales of the Malibu, Equinox, Traverse and Suburban. Fiat Chrysler sold 26,928 cars and trucks in August, up slightly from 26,825 a year earlier. Jeep sales rose 9.2 per cent, while Dodge brand truck sales were up 10.1 per cent, reflecting the strength of the truck segment. FCA’s Chrysler’s total car sales dropped 19 per cent to 2,036 vehicles. Ford, Toyota sales drop Ford sold 26,581 cars and trucks in August, a 5 per cent decrease from 27,988 last year. But it was able to boost sales of the Canadian-built Edge by four per cent to 1,717 and the Ford Explorer by 59 per cent to 1,967. Its F-Series truck is also a winner, selling 11,206 vehicles. Toyota Canada Inc. sold 18,292 vehicles in August, a decrease of 1.1 per cent from the same period last year. However, it sold 12 per cent more TCI trucks, or 10,055 vehicles. The Lexus division set its 11th consecutive month of record sales, with 1,931 units sold, up 25.9 per cent over last year.
B
oxing Champion Floyd Mayweather has bought himself one of the rarest cars on the planet. Mayweather recently posted a picture on Instagram sitting on the hood of a $4.8M Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita supercar. The Koeninsegg CCXR Trevita supercar is one of only 2 of it’s kind on the planet accelerating from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 254 miles per hour. But don’t you dare call it a “super car” because Mayweather says it’s basically a “Hyper car”. Nicknamed “Money” and earning close to $450 Million a year, Mayweather is the world’s highest paid boxer. The Floyd Mayweather car collection includes three Bugatti Veyrons, three Ferraris, a Lamborghini and a Porsche 911. That boxing match with Manny Pacquiao, which was called “the biggest fight of the century” sure paid off.

Car Crash Traps Woman in Car
North American Market to Get New Yamaha ROV YXZ1000R

T
he driver of a grey sedan is in stable condition after a crash crushed the side of her vehicle, trapping her early Saturday morning in New Westminster, B.C. The collision happened just before 1 a.m. at the intersection of McBride Boulevard and 8th Avenue in the last week of August. Katrina Huberman says she was stopped at the intersection, waiting to make a left turn, when the crash happened right in front of her. She alleges the driver of a northbound car-hauling flat deck truck ran a red light, and struck the westbound car on the driver side. “It was shocking, definitely, mostly because I should have been turning, and I would have been turning, and I would have been the one to be hit if she hadn’t gone through,” said Huberman. “I’m still a little bit shaken up.” Huberman said she immediately pulled over and called 911. The operator told her to check on the driver, who Huberman estimates is in her mid-20s. “She was talking. She was obviously in pain and it was definitely hard to see,” said Huberman. “I just hope that she’s okay.” Captain Jeff Cartwright with New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services said crews arrived to find the driver trapped in the driver’s seat, with bent metal pinching her legs and torso. “We attempted to just pull a door off, but upon pulling the door off, we found there was quite a bit of impingement. So it was a very tricky extrication,” said Cartwright. Firefighters used several power tools to cut and remove other pieces from the car, including the entire roof. “B.C. Ambulance was very supportive of us, we worked together as a team,” said Cartwright. “We sort of allowed them to get into our extrication scene so they could start an IV and maintain life.” “I’m so proud of my crew, I’m so proud of [Emergency Health Services] and police. Everyone worked together as a team. This is a great example of all the different units working together,” Cartwright said. The driver of the truck was not injured. The intersection was closed for several hours while New Westminster police investigated the crash. 8

amaha Motor Co., Ltd. announced today the launch of a core product in the RV1 business, the fourth model in the ROV (Recreational Off-highway Vehicle) lineup. The twoseater YXZ1000R pure sports model will be launched from September 2015 in the North American market, where ROVs are highly popular. Manufacturing will be carried out by U.S. Group company Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America (YMMC). ROVs are used in a wide range of situations, from practical field applications to recreational and sports markets. Primarily popular in North America, the ROV market has been growing in recent years, with total demand in the U.S.A. reaching approximately 240,000 units in 2014. Yamaha Motor has been expanding its ROV sales by launching the multi-purpose VIKING and VIKING VI, along with the recreational Wolverine model. Designed to deliver sports driving in a variety of environments such as rough ground, deserts, etc., the YXZ1000R pure sports model therefore rounds out a product lineup that meets a wide variety of customer demands, from practical field applications to recreation and sports. The main features of the YXZ1000R are: 1) exciting driving performance thanks to the use of a newly-developed DOHC 12-valve 998cc liquid-cooled 3-cylinder engine and an industry-first sequential manual five-speed transmission, 2) newly-developed front and rear suspension that contribute to travel right across a variety of terrain, 3) special 27-inch tires and 14-inch aluminum wheels delivering superior ride comfort and controllability, 4) electric power steering (EPS) that assists steering operation under harsh environments, and 5) a design that achieves an overwhelming sense of presence and power. In addition to the standard specifications in the YXZ1000R, the lineup also features the YXZ1000R SE. This model utilizes Beadlock rims and a body highlighted with the speed block design on a yellow base color. This specification commemorates the 60th anniversary of the founding of Yamaha Motor. Yamaha Motor will continue to launch new ROV products to build a wide-ranging lineup that meets customer expectations, aiming for further sales expansion. This model is not able to be registered to obtain license plates, and thus cannot be driven on public roads.

Consumer Reports Gives Tesla Highest Score Ever
T
here’s never been a score like this and it’s insane. Tesla Motors Inc.’s all-wheel-drive version of the battery-powered Model S, the P85D, earned a 103 out of a possible 100 in an evaluation by Consumer Reports magazine. For the first time ever, the combination of power and efficiency was so off-the-charts that Consumer Reports had to recalibrate its ratings methods, “to account for the car’s exceptionally strong performance,” according to a statement. In the end, the vehicle was given a score of 100 that set a new standard for perfection. The Tesla sedan is the quickest Consumer Reports ever tested, accelerating to 60 miles per hour from a stop in 3.5 seconds using the car’s “insane mode.” (Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has since released an even-faster “ludicrous mode.”) The P85D is a high-performance, all-wheel- drive version of the all-electric Model S that achieved the equivalent of 87 miles per gallon of gasoline. “This is a glimpse into what we can expect down the line, where we have cars with the performance of supercars and the comfort, convenience and safety features of a luxury car while still being extremely energy efficient,” Jake Fisher, the magazine’s head of automotive testing, said in an interview. “We haven’t seen all those things before.” Based on the P85D’s scores, Consumer Reports had to reassess how much to weigh things like acceleration, where the Tesla is as much as twice as quick as other vehicles, Fisher said. “Once you start getting so ridiculously fast, so ridiculously energy efficient, it didn’t make sense to go linear on those terms anymore,” he said. Tesla reported 11,532 Model S sales in the second quarter, and the company, based in Palo Alto, California, delivered 21,577 units in the first half. Because of production risks as it begins volume assembly of the Model X sport
utility vehicle, Tesla said it now aims to deliver 50,000 to 55,000 autos this year, down from an original target of 55,000. Despite the record score, the magazine criticized the $127,820 test vehicle for the quality of its interior materials compared with other luxury models,
as well as a ride that is firmer and louder than the base Model S. The starting price for a P85D is $105,000. The Model S topped the magazine’s buyer survey last year for the second year in a row, scoring 98 out of a possible 100, after posting a 99 the previous year. The car was also the top overall pick for the second year in a row by the independent magazine testers.

SUMIT AHUJA

I
’m driving down the highway in my black 1980 corvette. I can feel the car underneath me, with its engine revving, slight vibrations, and roaring exhaust as it accelerates down the road at a speed that gives me just enough time to enjoy the blue ocean to my left, all while keeping me from dwelling too long on anything. I can feel the slight interruption between gears, like an indrawn breath, and that moment of rest just before the car leaps back into action, at once faster and quieter than before. As I reach top gear, I’m cruising. My name is Sumit Ahuja and I’m a family law lawyer with Lindsey Kenney LLP, a very well respected and trusted full-service law firm that has been in business for over 35 years. I like my practice and my past year at Lindsey Kenney has been exciting and rewarding — like a really good drive down the road, family law is fast and intense, but relaxing, all at the same time. Sometimes, you’re really in the thick of it, feeling events gather speed, but still, making sure to take those little pauses in between to catch your breath and change it up, do something different, adapt, and change. At the same time, as I’m part of the machine, experiencing that headlong rush, there’s also a part of me that’s looking at my surroundings and seeing what’s there—is there some place I want to stop? Some other place I want to go? I may be in a 1 ton piece of metal flying down the road at over 130 km/h, but I’m in control and balanced, and everything is happening at just the right speed. My fondest memories as a child were watching my father and his friends talk and look after their vehicles. I lost my father at the age of 12. I now share this passion with my two sons, Devan and Dilan, who I hope will fall in love with vehicles like I have. My 1980 Corvette is a machine that is dear to me. It’s classic, yet its style and looks still appeal to all today. Heads continuously turn to look when I’m at a stop light or making a turn. Sure, GM should 12

have put in the 350 vs the 305 that mine has, but it still has enough power for my needs. This 1980 Corvette is old school, and all-thewhile, appreciated by modern enthusiasts today. Having to be a litigant in a family law case is one of the toughest things most of my clients will have to endure in their lives. There are starts and stops, bumps in the road, flat tires, and mechanical problems, made all the more aggravating by the periods of smooth sailing. It’s really important for families, with their children, that they take some time out to see what’s all around them, and get some perspective so that they can make better, healthier long-term decisions for themselves and their children, and I try to make sure that I convey that. Rather than despairing or getting aggravated when there’s a road block, I like to encourage the client to think about re-routing—sometimes, it may actually turn out to be a better way of getting to the same destination, and you think of things you wouldn’t ordinarily think of. It’s a cliché to say it’s about the journey, not the destination, but it’s true. Yeah, I’m going somewhere, but the most important thing to me is the difference between where I start and where I will end up, is what I see on the way there and how I feel about it. I’ve had the privilege of meeting someone who shares my passion for cars and old school values in Ryan Sahota from Pacific Accounting. We believe that like an old car, you must treat life and business with a great deal of respect. And always always, we are here to make sure that our clients receive the best possible outcome. While managing a practice and a file can sometimes be hard, and there are a lot of distractions; ultimately, you have to remember that it’s just you, the road, and the horizon ahead of you. I’m just beginning to feel like I’ve hit my stride, and there’s a level patch up ahead I can see where I can just put it into drive and see where it takes me.

I
love Corvettes. Three words that are simple, straight and true, but are yet supercharged and embody passion. I have always loved being in a garage and remember from a young age working on cars with my Dad and cleaning them together. A moment that will always be etched in my mind as a child is seeing my first Corvette roll down our street past our driveway. I was 7 years old, but I remember two things: the deep rumbling sound with distinct crisp pings bouncing off the side pipes and the gorgeous deep ruby curves shaping the 1967 split-back window. From then on I was in love, and dreamt of the day I would own my own Corvette. I love old school Corvettes; there is just something about the craftsmanship in old school that you can’t get anymore. My favorite Vettes have to be the late C2’s and the early C3’s before emissions control came into effect in 1972. The power harnessed under those tantalizing curves were true beauty and the beast. So, it was as a surprise when I came across my own beauty, a numbers matching 1979 L82 4-speed. Normally, I would never have given a late C3 generation Vette a second glance, but when the garage doors lifted and shed light on those curvaceous show room yellow curves and black leather, well I was smitten. The gentleman who was selling the car at the time offered to take me on a test drive – naturally, I said yes. Stepping into the passenger seat I knew that the L82 was fast, but nothing like its predecessors. Boy, was I wrong. Pulling up to a four-way stop I had been so far un-impressed with the drive, until the seller turned to me and said, “You may want to hang on”. Next thing I knew the car was revving into the high 5k’s and was shot gunned out of a right hand turn in second gear, throwing the car into fourth within seconds we were flying at 130 km/h downhill coming to a residential red light. With not enough time to reach a full stop, a hard late handbrake was made, practically drifting the car around the corner. With the world’s biggest grin and the smell of exhaust fumes and excitement, I knew I had found my Vette. 14

It’s been said that the bond between man and machine is sacred; and I would agree, as all of the men in my family have always shown great pride in their vehicles and it has been passed down from my Grandfather to me. I often think that how a man treats his car is how he approaches life and is a reflection of his character. Growing up I was taught to have respect, honour, and integrity in all that I do and who I interacted with. It’s been those old school values that have defined me not only as a man, but as a driver and a professional. I thoroughly believe that in a corporate world that does not highly reward those for staying true, the trusted educated professional is a dying breed – but it shouldn’t and doesn’t have to be. Just like an old school Corvette, it is hard to find the right professional, but even harder to find one who maintains old school values, yet is still innovative. It is these attributes that have made me appreciate the work that I do and the interaction that I have with my clients. Appreciating individuals for who they are, respecting their businesses, and having the integrity to do what is right by them to bring success for their loved ones and themselves is what drives me. That’s probably why I Sumit and I have such a great working relationship. Yes, we have the same taste in cars, but our similarities in how we work mirror our old school ethics, the code which we live by. There is something to be said about finding an empty back road: tearing up asphalt, gripping the leather steering wheel, feeling the engine go through the gears while hearing that distinct “snick, snick” when you shift. The smell of that exhaust, having the wind through your hair, the roar of the Corvette in your ears as it responds to your commands – there is nothing else like it. While many purists overlook the 1979 Corvette, a disregard for the true professional, the one with old school values, has also taken place. Like my Corvette, you’ll never know when you stumble across that rare breed, the diamond in the rough.

urchasing and servicing a vehicle has changed dramatically over the last 5 years. Car dealers need to be continually putting their best foot forward. The average customer now visits a dealership once before purchasing their chosen vehicle, whereas before they could visit up to three times. So, what are we doing differently? What sets us apart from other stores? At OpenRoad Richmond Lexus, we believe in excellence in customer service. Our Lexus Covenant expresses explicitly that we are to “treat every guest as if they are a guest in our home”. We value that statement and strive to make true to it every day. From the moment that our customers (“Guests) arrive at our store we ensure they are greeted warmly and that they are assisted in the most efficient way possible. The purchasing experience has previously had a stigma of being a stressful one in most situations, but we believe at Lexus that Guests are to be treated fairly and that pricing is what keeps us competitive and relevant. Our Product Advisors are here to ensure that the Guests needs are met and that each and every time we exceed their expectations Our service department has one of the highest Customer Service Index rating in the country – and that’s truly because of our people. That really begins with believing in the product we represent. Some people will ask, “Why service at the dealership over a service centre”? Well, our staff, including Technicians, have the highest level of Lexus trainingWe are able to keep accurate records of your vehicle and ensure that all maintenance and warranty information is accurately maintained and having records of your service history is very important when and if you ever decide to sell or trade in your vehicle. We also keep you informed of any necessary maintenance that your vehicle may require in future. We update the Guest by a quick phone call reminder – to a simple text message. Striving to contact the Guest in the most efficient way that works for then.

August Windstorm Causes Severe Damage
W
as your vehicle damaged by a tree or wind during the shocking windstorm in late August? While BC Hydro was working around the clock, ICBC wasn’t too far behind in handling automotive claims. Unfortunately, if your vehicle was damaged, there’s a chance that your claim may not be eligible for coverage. It’s highly recommended you call ICBC and check how much coverage you have, as drivers who have not purchased “comprehensive coverage” may be out of luck. “It would depend on the insurance policy you purchased for your vehicle. Typically an object falling on your vehicle, in this situation a tree landing on your vehicle, would be a comprehensive claim,” said Adam Grossman, senior media relations adviser for ICBC. “We know that [this windstorm] is going to be an expensive weekend.” While all drivers register for “basic coverage” through ICBC, adding comprehensive coverage
is optional, and drivers have the choice of going through another provider other than ICBC for the service. Comprehensive coverage includes damages caused by natural disasters such as wind, hail, lightening, rising water, as well as falling/flying objects. “Around 80 per cent of our personal insurance customers get their full coverage through us and that would include collision and comprehensive coverage as well,” adds Grossman. Upon reporting your claim, ICBC looks into the extent of the damage. Say, for example, the damage is caused by tree branches hitting your windshield, you may just need the part(s) replaced. If a tree however comes crashing down on your vehicle, you might be looking at a total loss as the vehicle may be beyond repair. “In the cases where a tree in its entirety has come down on top of a vehicle, in many cases you’ll be looking at a total loss for that claim rather than a repair,” adds Grossman. If your car was damaged, it’s encouraged you report your claim as soon as possible.

Ford Focus ST W
ith the wide variety of deluxe supercars available in the North American market today, it might seem that the Ford Focus ST may be a bit of a humble alternative for the adrenaline-chasing car aficionado. Surprisingly easy to get accustomed to, the Ford Focus ST has been on the market for the last three years, having recently undergone some design modifications, and maintained the top spot for one of the most-wanted hatchbacks in today’s competitive automotive market. After witnessing the popularity of this ‘humble hatchback’, I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. Thanks to Ford Canada and BHG Media Fleet’s local office, I booked a 2015 Focus ST. Could this little ST deliver the exhilarating fun-to-drive experience despite its relatively affordable price and reliable efficiency? After just a few days on the test drive, I understood why this compact rocket is getting more and more popular on Greater Vancouver roads. And those I know who own one are beyond satisfied with its features, reliability, style, design, affordable price, and overall comfort level. When it comes to handling, I found the Focus ST to be quite the interesting/unique experience. The hatchback does encompass a torque steer, however, whilst driving it in a straight line, it didn’t seem to significantly pose as a strong issue to me. In my view, having a torque steer on a powerful front-wheel drive hatchback was just part of what made it what it a distinctive driving experience. The speed at which this hatchback can race around the streets cannot be underestimated by any means. After feeling the car out, it became obvious that an exhilarating experience is just what the car was designed for. That being said, it’s incredibly easy to break the rules with this car. Finally, as far as the overall look of the Ford Focus ST is concerned, the Tangerine Scream hue definitely is a showstopper and adds to its overall vibrant and glitzy appeal. The shocking yellow color has been imperative in the success of Ford Focus ST’s overall popularity and likeability, since it’s pretty rare to spot another automobile with the same unique hue. Ford’s larger ST undergoes certain minor alterations this year. However, none of these alterations are major and the overall look and feel of the hatchback will remain relatively the same, if not better. The front aspect has undergone a few design alterations, along with LEDs installed in the headlamps and brand new wheels. There has been some minor tweaking of the gauge cluster, as well as a brand new flatbottomed steering wheel that’s comparatively a way better alternative than the former four-spoke unit that existed beforehand. And finally, the most substantial change in the 2015 model are the new front springs, and improved shock absorber turning front and rear for more efficient and reliable handling. To be honest, not a lot of modifications were required in the first place as the 2012 model got pretty rave reviews to begin with. Don’t let the affordable price fool you! The Ford Focus ST can be as exhilarating and adrenaline boosting as many of the deluxe supercars out there. Overpowered cars have their benefits and perks, which are clearly undisputable, but the accessible nature combined with the funto-drive factor of the Ford Focus ST is something that can’t be easily overlooked.

want to share a conversation that I had with a customer of mine, who for the sake of this article we’ll call Sandy. Sandy is an ambitious entrepreneur who has founded and successfully runs her own company out of Vancouver. She has been looking for more ways to be effective with her cash flow and tax dollars. Sitting at a local bistro over coffee I shared with her a relatively simple way to be more efficient with her tax dollars through a vehicle called a Private Health Service Plan (PHSP) or Health Savings Account (HSA) as it is more commonly known. The PHSP/HSA program has been around since the mid 1980’s and is regulated by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), it was originally designed to provide a taxincentive solution to small and medium sized business in Canada. A PHSP/HSA is one of Canada’s best kept secrets for small and medium business owners - it converts out of pocket, after tax medical expenses, into a before tax business expense. Since a small business owner should be self-insuring their routine, planned, medical events, it makes sense for them to pay in the most cost effective way; as paying for medical bills with after-tax dollars can be onerous. To make it easier to understand let’s use the same example that I showed to Sandy. We’ll use the province of British Columbia’s tax rates for this example and assume that the entity in question is incorporated. Using a total cost of a $1,000 out of pocket medical expense for the business owner, assuming that the owner lives in British Columbia, and earns $152,000 per year, with a marginal 20

In Your Corner tax rate of 45.80%, the total cost to their business for a $1,000 medical bill is $1,843. In other words, Sandy would need to earn $1,843 to pay for a $1,000 medical bill because 45.80% ($843) additional is required to pay income tax. Compare that to using a PHSP/HSA account where the $1,000 is 100% deductible along with the PHSP/HSA admin fee (usually very nominal) as an expense in your company with no personal tax on the amount. Using our example the approximate savings to Sandy are $540 on $1,000. Showing this basic example to Sandy, she was very impressed with the tax dollar savings but wondered why she should bother with a PHSP/HSA setup. I explained to her that as a small to medium sized business owner most are not eligible for health insurance plans or the costs are too inhibitive to use. Of course, if you can afford these plans and using them makes sense, they normally still do not cover 100% of the expense, but you can “top up” with a PHSP/HSA plan to cover the shortfall. Second, if you do not have a health insurance plan in place as a business owner you are still paying for the expenses out of pocket and the tax on those amounts associated with taking the money out of your company. Even if the medical receipts are eligible for the Medical Tax Expense Credit on your personal return you are still not claiming them at 100% and the effect on your taxes is watered down after all of the percentages are taken into consideration. While the above example and discussion are simplified, there are tremendous benefits and advantages to business owners in Canada who run a small or medium sized business in using a PHSP/HSA plan that can save on their tax bill and cash flow needs.

2015 Suzuki GSX-S750
2015
SUZUKI
GSX-S750
W
hen Suzuki launched its first GSX-R750 in 1985, it turned the sportbike world on its head. Where had this idea been before and why had nobody thought of it earlier? A supersport bike for the road – what a novelty. The first Gixxers, as they turned out to be known, were purely road bikes taken directly from the track, well with some modifications to make them street legal. It was the notion of a reputed race-imitation, and with this single killer blow, Suzuki changed everybody’s reasoning from greater and all the more intense is best – to lighter and nimble is better. In reality, the Gixxers additionally created obscure levels of drive, so much so that the competition was racing to keep up. Luckily, and especially for those who have ridden them, Suzuki never stopped making the GSX-R750, and it is arguably the perfect Supersport motorcycle. It has much more power than a 600, which can feel a little lackluster unless it is revved to the moon, while the liter bikes are over-specified for the street, and can even be quite a handful on the track. But not everyone needs, or wants a supersport bike, and that’s where the S750 comes into play. For 2015, the Suzuki GSX-S750 gives an already titled bike even more road keen execution. Mixing only the right blend of present day sportbike execution with cutting edge street bike style, this S750 is reason fabricated for energy. Suzuki took the intense 749cc four-chamber fuel-infused sportbike motor from the GSX-R750, and tuned it to convey the ideal force bend for road riding. The motor’s cam profiles have been reexamined, and the admission and exhaust tracts have been reshaped to help low-end torque and mid-reach power. This gives the 750 unmatched throttle reaction and serious speeding up. Suzuki’s double throttle valve fuel infusion implies the execution is fresh and reliable. Also, the bike’s pulsed-secondary AIR-injection system pushes fresh air into the exhaust ports, which allows the Suzuki GSX-S750 to meet the latest emissions standards. Since this is not a supersport, the handlebars supplant the race bike’s clip-ons, conveying a more upright street bike style. A complete instrument panel is pretty simple and user friendly, complete with a tachometer, a computerized LCD speedometer, fuel-utilization meter, apparatus position pointer, fuel gauge, odometer/ excursion meter and a clock. It’s pretty much all you need. Most motorcycles are fun, but the Suzuki GSX- S750 is fun all the time, mainly because Suzuki got the balance just right between easyto-ride-manageability and high performance. If you’re used to a 600-class bike, you are losing out — it might be time to upgrade. The motor is redlined at a conservative 11,250 rpm, and the Gixxer motor simply rips to the rev limiter. If you want horsepower, it’s there — track day anyone? However, those happy to enjoy the performance without going nuts will be well rewarded with the decent mid-range and strong top-end pull from this engine. 22

“Humble Value... BRILLIANT ENGINE”

Clutch action is light, and the six-speed transmission is so easy and smooth to engage that, a lot of the time, I simply used clutchless upshifting. I wouldn’t call this bike a beginner machine, but it is so user-friendly that novice and intermediate riders will quickly feel at home. Of course, that feeling is also because of the comfortable ergonomics and lightweight, neutral-handling chassis and suspension. The handlebars of the GSX create a slightly leaned forward riding position, with sporty feeling (but pleasantly rubber-mounted) rear-set foot pegs and a 32-inch seat height. As I mentioned before, the S750 is quite easy to ride, but it still lacks the lighterfeeling and more agile Honda CBR650F. With the Honda, it all just works very well together. This is not to say that the GSX-S750 is a good bike; it’s quite good but just not as good as the Honda. With respect to city and highway riding, the Suzuki has lots of power, with that brilliant engine from the Gixxer. If I was doing more open road and highway riding, I may opt for the Yamaha FZ-09, simply for the additional power, torque, and size. Despite the humble value, taking a GSX-R and turning into a naked bike is quite an accomplishment. Other manufacturers have done the same with their supersports and many riders welcome the option of a naked alternative. The GSX-S750 is a great bike that just needs some more refinement, but for under $9000, it’s a great choice.

I
read about God’s Mountain years ago in a magazine, listing it as one of the most unique stays in Canada. It features a roofless room. This room books up very quickly and for years I had been trying to book it, and this year there was success! God’s Mountain is overlooking Skaha Lake in Penticton. There are numerous rooms that can be booked, but the star feature is the room without the roof. It is on a 115 acre estate with an organic vineyard, outdoor saltwater swimming pool, outdoor hot tub, outdoor kitchen, and walking and biking trails. My room minus the roof really was a shock. There really is no roof! It is open but the bed has cover. There is an outdoor tub to relax in and look up at the stars and the bathroom is tiny with a wet room where the shower is above the sink. I was laughing and excited, that is until the mosquitoes ate me alive through the night even through netting and heavy spray. The feature I want to mention is the food. After my rough night, breakfast was included and this breakfast is on par with any five star resort! Breakfast is prepared fresh daily by a chef who has been on staff for many years. It was a feast that can compete with the best of the brunches out there. Fresh juice, coffee and tea, cereals, assorted breads for toast, fresh baked muffins and croissant, herbed eggs,

scalloped potatoes, bacon, sausage, yogurt, fruit, cheese, assorted deli meats, cream of wheat, and my personal favourite; lemon souffles. I have NEVER seen a souffle at any brunch or breakfast anywhere in the world and it melted in your mouth! The breakfast on my first morning was so good, that I had to come up with a plan to make it through another mosquito filled night just so I could eat it again. The plan: set up a distraction on the other side of the room with candles to attract the little vampires, set up a citronella candle as another distraction, close all curtains on the bed and add the mosquito netting, a fan to blow them away, and of course lots of repellent spray! I made it through the second night without a bite but took many bites of the well earned breakfast the next morning! Alfresco dining in the vineyard is featured on Sunday nights during the summer and select Thursday nights. Chefs prepare four course meals featuring wine from local vineyards at a communal table. These dinners are extremely popular and must be booked months in advance if you would like to attend. God’s Mountain is great getaway escape. You hear birds and crickets chirping, and see more stars in the sky than you can imagine. I was even treated to a lightning storm over the lake and a triple rainbow. You will be fed well and will enjoy the peace and tranquility. As Pharell Williams sings, “Because I’m happy Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.”

2015 Subaru WRX STi
2015 Tesla Model S
F
irst launched in 2012, the Model S is the world’s first premium electric sedan. Built from the ground up to be 100% electric, Model S redefined the very concept of a four-door car that can accommodate up to seven people or have almost 64 cubic feet of storage. This premium electric vehicle has a range of up to 435 km; and don’t think the car is slow; it can accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in just under 5.4 seconds, even for the base model. What’s more, the Model S is quiet. If you’re cruising at highway speeds, the only thing you will hear (provided you’re not listening to music) is the sound of the wind or tires on the road. People will fall in love with the simple interior in which, well, there’s just the massive center screen that controls EVERYTHING. The car is beautiful to look at, drives amazingly well, and will surpass all expectations of an electric car. The 2015 Tesla Model S starts at $85, 300 (after incentives).
I
t’s been a few years since I’ve driven the WRX STi and even then, it was an incredibly exhilarating drive. For 2015, everything about the vehicle is even more extreme. The WRX STi is a purebred performance car that features some of the most advanced automotive technologies, including Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD for superior control. Add to that one of the best 2.5L four-cylinder turbocharged engines in the world and you’ve got a monster of a car. The engine doesn’t really come alive until higher rpm’s but when it kicks in, hold on your hats. The STi is more suited for the track, whether race or rally, but it’s a blast to drive anywhere. In the city, the STi is tame and not the most comfortable to drive, unless you like your head bobbing around in our not-to-smooth roads. It does get thumbs up from many Subaru lovers because unless you know what this machine can do, it’s really a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The WRX starts at $29, 995 while the STi starts at $37, 995.
2015 Cadillac Escalade
T
he Escalade has always made an impact whenever it pulled up to any venue. Seeing that few changes had been made in the past some years, the iconic American luxury vehicle maker’s followers were looking forward to the 2015 model and let me tell you, it doesn’t disappoint. The outside is still very much Cadillac with its angular look and beautiful LED lighting. On the inside, however, is where most of the changes can be appreciated. According to Cadillac, 11 artisans endeavoured to make an interior worthy of praise. There’s plenty of premium leather, handpicked woods, and other materials that all just come together. I wasn’t a huge Escalade fan, but stepping inside this one really took me aback. And get this, the new ESV adds an additional 20 inches, with 10 inches for third-row legroom. The CUE system is quite simple to use, although I found the haptic feedback a touch off at times. For power, there’s lots of it – the 6.2L V8, matched with an 8-speed transmission, provides 420hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. Well done, Cadillac! The 2015 Escalade starts at $72, 970. 26

Honda CTX1300T
S
tepping away from a typical bagger was Honda’s new species, the CTX1300. Honda said that the CTX1300 was moving into new territory that appealed to a new breed of rider. This motorcycle is a great mix of everything: part bagger, part commuter, part weekend tourer, and even part sport-tourer. The silky smooth 1261cc V4 won’t give you the same sound as a V-twin and personally, I don’t mind. The CTX’s whine is a different musical note than what you’d expect from a typical cruiser. Even though the bikes weighs 732 pounds, it honestly doesn’t feel heavy at all. I found the CTX1300T very nimble and easy to ride, no matter in the city or on the open roads. The bike has great ergonomics and a comfortable seating position. The engine provides lots of power and pulls quite easily from even 1600 rpm. What really impressed me was the smooth shifting; mind you, I’m comparing it to my regular ride, a Yamaha Warrior that I have at home. This bike features traction control, ABS, self-cancelling turn signals and Bluetooth audio. The 2015 CTX1300 is a great bike and starts at $18, 999.

MERCEDES-BENZ C400 A
ll-new vehicle designs are usually designed to catch the eye and attract attention, but the reasons for that attraction often depend on the numbers that appear on the price sheet. Since its arrival last year, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has garnered its share of positive attention: it was named Best New Luxury Car under $50,000 by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) and World Car of the Year by a jury of international auto reviewers. I’ll be the first to admit that automotive awards programs have their flaws, and I’ve cast many a vote in the Canadian Car of the Year awards myself, but there’s no doubt that these awards tend to go to vehicles that are among the best in their respective classes. How you define ‘best’ in the C-Class’s case depends on your perspective. If BMW’s cars offer the self-proclaimed ‘ultimate driving experience,’ then

Benz has traditionally played toward buyers looking for a more laid-back vehicle and a purer expression of German automotive luxury. This new C-Class, however, makes it clear that Mercedes is aiming to challenge BMW’s driving prowess. I hopped in to my C 400 tester, and my first hint of this car’s intentions was the driver’s seat, whose extra-firm cushions were a turn-off before I started the engine. My week in this car was limited to city driving stints of less than an hour at a shot, which I was actually glad for, as this seat discouraged thoughts of long highway hauls. On the upside, these chairs are supportive in the right places, including a power-adjustable under-thigh bolster. Like most of its direct competitors, the C-Class retains compact interior dimensions: a friend who stands a tall-in-thetorso five-foot-nine was disappointed in how little headroom there was under my test car’s standard panoramic sunroof. There was plenty of space for my shorter frame, and only a steering wheel whose
Chris Chase
2015 Mercedes-Benz C400
telescopic reach didn’t extend far enough for my liking took away from the driving position. Rear seat riders will find useful legroom, though headroom is again compromised, this time by the roofline as it slopes toward the rear window. Mercedes offers a range of interior colour combinations, but my test car came with basic black with aluminum trim. The metal bits felt like the real deal (including gorgeous grilles on the Burmeister stereo’s door-mounted speakers), but the all-black scheme made the car feel dark and close, and the piano black centre console looked a bit down-market next to the other materials. Mercedes-Benz is moving away from model names that directly reflect what’s under the hood: while the entry-level model with its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder is called the C 300, the C 400 label is reserved for cars using a turbo 3.0-litre V6. Never mind the name; pay attention to this engine, instead, because it’s a winner with its 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. It wasn’t so long ago that the high-performance AMG-tuned C 55 “only” boasted 362 hp/376 lb-ft, and while this C 400 is no AMG thunderbeast, the turbo six makes this a seriously quick car, especially from low speeds, where all that torque is available at just 1,600 rpm. Standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive is a good fit here, putting that torque down efficiently and without drama; there’s a reason so many powerful, upscale cars come with four-wheel traction as standard kit. The only transmission is a seven-speed automatic that works unobtrusively most of the time. It’s when you get an itchy right foot and engage the car’s ‘sport+’ mode that the gearbox lets the rest of the car down. While it holds gears longer and is more eager to downshift in that performanceoriented setting, it doesn’t snap off the crisp upshifts I expected, and manual downshifts commanded via the wheel-mounted paddles are sloppier and lessimmediate than they should be. That’s a shame, because the optional ‘agility select’ system (part of the C 400 sport package) that lets you toggle between ‘eco,’ ‘comfort,’ ‘sport,’ and ‘sport+’ modes works on the steering, throttle response, and air suspension to change the character of the car from comfy cruiser to the closest you’ll get to the V8-powered AMGtuned C 63 without spending the extra $23,000 it commands. No matter what the agility select setup was set to, I found the ride to be on the firm side. Notably, the C 400 gets big, cross-drilled front brake rotors that provide solid stopping performance and good pedal feel. Against fuel consumption ratings of 11.1/8.4 L/100 km (city/ highway), my test car averaged 11.2 L/100 km in real-world city driving, which included liberal use of ‘sport+’ mode, and all that torque.
Mercedes offers the expected high-tech features here: blind spot assist, lane keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, a rear-end collision mitigation system that aims to protect the driver of a stopped C 400 from injury when it senses a fast-moving car approaching from behind, and pedestrian recognition that activates the auto-brake system when it senses pedestrians in the road and the driver doesn’t react.
More novel available extras include a park-assist system that helps guide the car into a spot, intelligent cruise control that will keep the car in its lane in long curves, a console-mounted touchpad that recognizes “handwriting” gestures for entering navigation destinations, and that sweet-sounding Burmeister stereo with 13 speakers and 590 watts of amplification. Notable omissions from my C 400 tester were adaptive (steerable) headlights, which are a $1,200 stand-alone option (static LED headlights are standard at this trim level). I’d have liked to see them included in a car whose price came within spitting distance of $60,000. Overall, the new C-Class is a well-executed sport sedan that actually does challenge the BMW 3 Series’ driving feel, if only because the latest generation is less driver-focused than it used to be. The C 400 does have its flaws, but it’s a car well worth checking out to see if you think it deserves all the attention it’s been getting. September / October 2015

Acura NSX
I
n February of 1989, Acura introduced a new sports car at the Chicago Auto Show, the NSX. Its introduction was significant, being the first supercar from a Japanese automobile manufacturer. The name NSX represented ‘New Sportscar eXperimental’. In just two years, the mid-engined NSX appeared on the supercar market in 1991 and continued in production for over ten years. Honda had been dominating Formula One racing and decided to continue that domination in the showrooms. In over a decade, the NSX did not change much; its styling appeared to derive from the mid-engine Lotus Esprit of the 1970’s, with its flat but angular styling cues. The design and materials used on the NSX was revolutionary and introduced many industry ‘firsts’ for the production car market. It was the first production car to use titanium connecting rods, six in total. The body and chassis was comprised of aluminum, weighing just over 460 pounds, much less than steel, but with equal strength. The aluminum body housed many advanced technologies such as PGM-FI, Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC), and a direct ignition system. The 3-liter DOHC V-6 engine was mounted mid-ship and matted to a five-speed manual gearbox. With 270 horsepower and 210 foot-pounds of torque, zero-to-sixty was accomplished in under six seconds. Production of the NSX slow, but for good reason. Each vehicle was hand assembled by a team of technicians, with an average of about 20 vehicles being produced per day. During its introductory year, only 1,940 NSX’s were produced. Sales continued to be strong through the 1990’s and into the next millennium. By 2004, over 8,000 of these Japanese supercars were being produced each year. Since its inception, minor aesthetic styling changes occurred, most notably the iconic Honda pop-up halogen headlights that were replaced with fixed HID lights. The rear wing was changed and 34

various other body parts were modified to improve the drag coefficient. These small changes increased the top speed from 167 to 175 mph. Throughout the years, various mechanical components were updated, such as the suspension and the size of the tires. The larger-diameter wheels and tires did more for its appearance than it did for performance. In 1995, a Sequential Sportshift automatic transmission, inspired by Formula One racing, was offered as optional equipment. That was the same year that the NSX-T, the NSX but with a removable roof, was introduced. Other optional equipment offered through the years was a keyless entry system and a trunk-mounted CD changer, both introduced after the 2003 model year. 1997 was the big year for the NSX and one that many enthusiasts had been waiting for since its introduction. Although the NSX’s 270 horsepower engine was powerful and the excellent weightdistribution of the vehicle offered superb handling, people wanted more. In 1997, Acura offered the NSX with a 3.2-liter V6 capable of producing 290 horsepower. Power was sent to the rear wheels courtesy of a six-speed manual gearbox. The price tag and styling of the NSX were borderline ‘supercar’ while the horsepower was a little under-rated when compared with some of the other great supercars such as Lamborghini and Ferrari. However, the entire package stood for itself; though it did not produce high horsepower numbers, the NSX did have the highest per-litre output of any naturally aspirated V6 production road-going car in the world. Sadly, production of the NSX ended in 2005 and since then, NSX enthusiasts have been anticipating a reappearance of this Japanese supercar. Well, the wait is over! The new NSX will be available in 2016 for a price tag of around $150K. Welcome back, NSX.

Kia Motors to Open Car Factory in Mexico in 2016
S
outh Korea’s Kia Motors Corp. said Wednesday it will invest more than $1 billion to build a car factory in northern Mexico that is expected to begin production in 2016. The company said the new plant in Nuevo Leon state, across the border from Texas, will have the capacity to make 300,000 cars a year. Kia’s announcement follows several by other car companies planning to expand or build new factories in Mexico. Last month, Germany’s BMW said it will spend $1 billion to build a new luxury car factory in San Luis Potosi state that will start production in 2019 as part of an effort to expand the company’s presence in the United States. BMW’s announcement came a week after Daimler and Renault-Nissan said they would spend $1.6 billion on a factory in Mexico to make premium compact cars for the Infiniti and Mercedes brands. Kia vice chairman Lee Hyoung-Keun said this will be the company’s first car factory in Mexico. Kia has five others car factories outside South Korea. “Mexico has acquired unique experience during its integration into global value chains, especially in the automotive industry,” Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said. Mexico is a favourite spot for car makers, thanks in part to its relatively low wages, proximity to the United States and several free trade agreements with 45 countries.

Alternative Fuels for the Motor Industry
T
he steam engine was a marvel that helped catapult the factory system to new heights during the Industrial Revolution. This new power system allowed machines to work more efficiently, producing more goods than ever before. Shortly afterwards, the combustion engine began to power the automotive and motorcycle industries – since fossil fuels such as oil were available in huge quantities, no one ever thought this fuel source would run out. Fast forward to the current times and the development of alternative fuel sources has become a topic of great interest. With rising gas prices and the greater emphasis on sustainable and green energy, there has been a rising desire of moving away from fossil fuels and creating more environmentally friendly fuels. Electric cars have emerged as the leading form of alternative energy and multiple countries have even begun to develop hydrogen fuel cells. Electric cars are becoming more prominent, with the most prominent and promising of this movement being Tesla Motors. Electric cars were intended as a more environmentally friendly and efficient form of transportation over traditional petroleum-fueled vehicles. Using one or more electric motors, electric cars are able to produce instant torque, resulting in smoother acceleration than petroleum fueled vehicles; add with this a lessened environmental impact and electric cars make an attractive option. However, their cost and lack of recharging infrastructure has deterred consumers from purchasing an electric vehicle over a petroleum car. The environmental impact also depends heavily on the region. Most of the world, including China, most of Europe and many other countries rely on burning coal as their primary source of energy. This means, charging an electric vehicle requires the burning of fossil fuels much the same as a regular petroleum vehicle. Here in BC, however, we are lucky enough to have hydroelectric power supplying nearly all of our total energy. Thus, in our region, the electric car would have the largest positive environmental impact in comparison to many other regions in the world. Hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) cars are a form of the electric car. Unlike regular electric cars, hydrogen fuel cell cars convert chemical hydrogen and oxygen into water and electricity. Another difference is that HFC cars have emissions; steam is a by-product. In addition, HFC vehicles are unlikely to be available to customers for several years. Industries have evolved over time and with societal demands. With more and more countries being concerned with our fragile environment, it’s important for the motor industries to continue to develop more environmentally friendly and sustainable fuel sources. 36

current generation retains a masculine, brash look, and the new here’s something that has to be said about traditions updates really make it look refined and modern. At the front, there’s – they are important and keep one connected with bright LED marker lights and a narrower grill, and the inlay design the past, whether familial, societal, or religious. really looks nice, as compared to previous years. And But for one aspect of my life, it wasn’t now standard on all models is the rear deck lid “spoiler” any of these; and when I shared my – kind of gives a BMW X5 look from the side. My heartfelt “traditional” desire with my very pregnant EcoDiesel Overland tester was finished in Billet Metallic, wife, she could care less. In fact, she got irritated that complete with 20” satin carbon wheels. Completing the the neurons in my head were firing for such a frivolous vehicle were dual exhausts, which boldly state, “I mean thought. Why would it matter in which vehicle we were to bring our newborn home? Nope, she couldn’t, or business.” This vehicle looks and feels at home whether on the back country roads, mud trails, pulling up to a didn’t’ want to, understand. But I couldn’t really blame her, especially when she was in her last two weeks of cocktail party, or bringing home a newborn. On August 10th, we welcomed baby girl Gurmehar to pregnancy. You see, my first two daughters had the privilege the world. Our elder daughters, now aged 8 and 6 years, of being brought home, after birth, in our 1996 Jeep immediately became protective of her, making sure she Grand Cherokee, my pride and joy for over 18 years Jag Dhatt was warm, cuddled, and fed on time. We couldn’t wait to – that’s right, 18 years and 410, 000 km. My GC, jag@jgkmedia.ca get our youngest and newest addition, with mommy too of aka Basanti (pronounced ba-san-tee), was perfect for course, home. As a parent, I’m constantly concerned with the safety and protection of my children because after all, bringing home our precious bundles of joy – she was safe, strong, reliable, luxurious, and had true 4WD, just in case. But they are priceless. Thus, knowing that my wife and three princesses were coming home in a Grand Cherokee, gave me piece of mind. since I had sold Basanti last year, how could I keep the tradition The 2015 Grand Cherokee is equipped with standard advanced alive? Thanks to Fiat Chrysler Canada, I was able to secure a multi-stage driver and front passenger airbags and supplemental brand new Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel Overland Edition – yes, the side curtain airbags. There’s also standard crush zones in the tradition would continue! I was about to share the news with my front of the vehicle and side guard door beams, integrated into the wife, but one look at her preparing dinner suggested I keep my design, that help absorb excess energy and decrease its transfer to mouth shut. The new 2015 Grand Cherokee is, in my opinion, a great looking the occupants. There’s also a plethora of available safety features, like lane departure warning, front collision warning, adaptive cruise mid-sized SUV. I’m probably biased towards the brand and model because of my previous emotional attachment; never-the-less, the control, etc. What this all means is that passengers are kept safe – 38

period. Just as we protect our children within our arms’ embrace, this Jeep makes sure its occupants stay safe. A couple of days after her birth, we were ready to take Gurmehar home. The elder girls were giddy with excitement that they barely slept the night. The only other time my girls stay up this late is to wait for Santa. We bundled Gurmehar in her car seat, said good bye to the nurses and doctors, and made our way to the awaiting SUV. Getting the car seat into the Grand Cherokee was quite simple thanks to the rear doors that open almost 80 degrees. I realize that most newer vehicles have wide-opening doors, but it never hit me until I had to get a car seat in again. And thanks to Jeep’s available Quadra-Lift air suspension system, selecting Park Mode ensures easy entry & exit and cargo loading & unloading. While the system isn’t as smooth as the one found in the Range Rover Sport or Mercedes GL, it still works quite well. As we all nestled into our seats, my elder daughter got busy with what she does best – touching all the surfaces and playing with the gadgets in the vehicle. It’s amazing, or depressing, how an 8-year old can figure out new technology much faster than we could at that age. Some of you might disagree on my next comment but I’ll say it anyways – Chrysler’s UConnect system is definitely one of the best and easiest infotainment systems to use on the market. Within 10-15 minutes most everyone, including my wife (who hates many infotainment systems), is able to master this one. The large 8.4” screen is very good, providing crisp, clear readouts and images. Another great upgrade (done last year) is that most of the upper
dash and door paneling is leather with real stitching, making the interior feel luxurious, similar to some of the luxury brands. The open wood inserts just add to the level of elegance. Front seats are comfortable and provide good support. Back seating space is also quite good - personally, losing a couple of inches in the cargo area while gaining just that little extra legroom for rear passenger is a much better trade-off for a family like mine, who really won’t be take this premium SUV into the wilderness for camping. If you have children, driving comfort is important. The air suspension system gives the Grand Cherokee a soft ride. Yes, it does disconnect the driver from the road as compared to let’s say an X5, but the X5 can’t compare to the Grand Cherokee’s off-road capabilities. The Jeep is purpose-built to make it one of the best off-road vehicles and thus, there is some compromise in aggressive street driving. Of course, if you want to really burn the tires and blow away most SUV’s, then get the SRT8. The drive home was one full of emotions for all of us: my daughters we filled with excitement that they had a new baby sister; my wife was dreading the long restless nights; and me, well I was overcome with the fact that I have three healthy, beautiful daughters who are my pillars of strength. As we pulled into our driveway and I took Gurmehar out of the Grand Cherokee, I whispered in here ear, “Welcome home, baby. Welcome home.” I have a sticker about Jeeps that will need to be modified. It should now read, “God Drove a Jeep AND now, Angels travel in one as well”. September / October 2015

Q1: My son is going to university for the first time. Everyone says that larger vehicles are safer than smaller ones, but smaller ones are more fuel efficient. Are smaller, compact cars quite safe? A1: Some people feel safer in a larger vehicle; I do. I drive a 1/2 ton pickup as my daily driver and I do feel a little bit safer knowing I have a bit more steel on my vehicle than most newer vehicles. As well, being slightly higher up means I am able to see more of what is going on around me. That may just be my mindset though. I am not sure full size vehicles are actually any safer than a newer compact vehicle. Most newer compact vehicles come equipped with full front and knee airbags, multiple side airbags, and even airbags in the seatbelts. Smaller vehicles now have more technology into the reinforcement in the usual crash locations to absorb and take an impact better. These help increase personal and passenger safety if in an accident. Q2: I’m not sure if you can answer this, but are there any special precautions I should be taking when storing my motorcycle away for the winter? A2: There are a few things that I will never miss when I store my bike. 1) Hot oil change – this is not only for peace of mind that it is done and I will be ready to ride when spring comes, but also to ensure there are no contaminants and moisture in the oil sitting at the bottom of the crankcase. 2) Remove the battery or install a trickle charger – this helps to ensure the battery will not die and maintains a steady charge on it, extending battery life. 3) Fill the fuel tank and install a fuel stabilizer – the stabilizer helps absorb any moisture that builds up in the tank and prevents corrosion. 42

Q3: Sometime in October, I’ll be taking off my summer tires and rims and storing them for the winter. Is it better to lie them flat or stand them up on a tire rack? Also, is it better to store them in our garage or in the shed? A3: As long as the tires are on rims and you have the recommended or the maximum psi rating in the tires when you store them, it doesn’t matter how you store them (laying them down or standing them up). If the tires are not on rims, I recommend stacking the tires (lying down) just for good measure. I would store the tires where ever there is the least amount of weather differences and moisture in the air as this helps save the rubber from dry rotting. Q4: I’ve had my Honda Accord for almost 10 years and it has about 160,000 km on it. Recently I’ve noticed that there is some engine knock. I’ve heard engine knock is common – is that true? Should I be concerned? A4: Engine knock may be common but does not mean that it’s good. Engine knock is pre-detonation of the fuel inside the combustion chamber of the engine. If fuel pre-detonates (preignites), it is damaging related engine components, building up carbon in the engine, and clogging the catalytic convertors in the exhaust system. As well, power and fuel economy is being reduced. It may be something as simple as worn out spark plugs or bad gasoline. I would highly recommend getting it checked out and fixed by your mechanic before it turns into a costly repair.

Suzuki unveils new-ish GSX-R1000
G
ixxer fans, sit tight. Suzuki recently unveiled a new GSX-R1000, though it’s not the all-new GSX-R that’s most certainly in the works. This is a commemorative edition GSX-R1000 with special redand-black paint scheme based on the 1986 AMA Superbike livery of American race ace Kevin Schwantz. Otherwise, it’s no different than other currently available Gixxers – aside from a “30 Years of Performance” badge on the tank and red stripes on the rims. Canadian pricing and availability have not yet been announced.
2008 Honda Accords Investigated by NHTSA
U
.S. auto safety regulators are investigating reports that air bags on some older Honda Accords may not inflate in a crash. The probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration covers about 384,000 cars from the 2008 model year. The agency says in documents posted Friday that it received 19 consumer complaints that the air bag control computer failed in the Accord, which then was Honda’s top-selling model. A driver in Belleview, Florida, was injured when his car hit a concrete wall at 50 miles per hour and the air bags didn’t inflate, according to a complaint filed with the agency. Several others complained that the computer had to be replaced to fix the problem and they were charged around $500. “This also means that the safety of the vehicle passengers and operators are in jeopardy and potentially face serious injury or death,” another complainant wrote. People filing complaints are not identified in the agency’s database. The agency says the malfunction causes the air bag warning light to illuminate on the dashboard and disables the air bags until repairs are made. Investigators will look into how often the problem happens and decide if a recall is needed. Honda said it is co-operating with the investigation and will continue an internal review. The investigation is based on a small number of complaints, the company said in a statement.
